Welcome A warm welcome to the April 2018 edition of the Rayleigh Local Business Guide. Over Easter the weather was very poor, rain, rain and more rain! However, better Spring weather is on it’s way and we feature some lovely walks for you and your family to get out and enjoy the local environment in our article on Spring Walks (page 6). In our regular ‘What’s On in Rayleigh’ on page 16 we feature a Titanic exhibition at the Rayleigh Town Museum, a Tea Dance and a Cockney Night! In our regular Acres Way feature (pages 10 and 11), we are really pleased that Hattie the Terrier, Max the Lurcher and Macey the Jack Russell cross that we featured last time have all found loving homes. That is really great news! We feature 3 lovely new dogs that require new homes this month. Within our Community section this month we feature an article on the History of Rayleigh Mount (page 21) which is one of 48 castles mentioned in the Domesday Survey of 1086 and the only one in Essex! We also have our regular column from our financial expert Martin Lamb from Joseph R Lamb Financial Advisers (centre pages). If you want to feature any local charities or community based scheme, local sports clubs or other local activities in our Castle Point or Rayleigh guides then please get in touch at: info@thelocalbusinessguide.co.uk If you are a local business and would like to advertise in the Guide, then please contact our salesperson Ricky on 01375 402546 who will give you a no obligation quote. It really is a cost effective way of promoting your business and generating business from your local community.

Working for the Community

Can you help Re-Home a Dog from Acres Way Kennels? Adopting a Dog If you think you can offer a dog a good home, the firs thing you need to do is to go down to the kennels, select a suitable dog you like, take it for a walk and see how you get on. Some people and dogs just don’t get along, so before reserving a dog, the Acres Way staff would need to see if you suit each other. If you have children, or another dog, they recommend that you bring them with you, to make sure that everyone will get on. Once you have visited the dogs, and hopefully found one that matches your lifestyle and expectations, a member of staff will arrange a convenient time for a home check. These are usually carried out within 2 or 3 days of your visit and take about half an hour. Once the home check is complete, you’ll be

able to collect your dog. You will need to bring with you some identifiction showing your current address, and the £130 adoption fee. Their staff will be on hand if you have any questions, and will be able to guide you through the adoption process. All the staff and dogs at Acres Way look forward to seeing you.

Re-Homing Update We are really pleased that Hattie the Terrier, Max the Lurcher and Macey the Jack Russell cross that we featured last time have all found loving homes. That is really great news!

Money Guidance What do we actually do at Joseph Lamb’s....? It is very easy for us to forget but what we think ‘Financial Advice’ is not always not what you may think it is! The Financial Advice industry has grown out of what used to be the life assurance and insurance broking industry, but is now a very different animal indeed. Whilst everyone in it moans about the level of regulation and complying with regulation, there is no doubt at all that higher and higher levels of regulation have led to higher and higher levels of professionalism. At Lamb’s we recognised the impact this regulation would have on us right from the earliest days, so we stopped doing ‘general insurance’ as long ago as 1987, and subsequently have simplified our business model to focus on our corespecialist activities. These are now very different from the past, our business has developed into an Investment and much as I hate the phrase ‘Wealth Management’ business. We run our own investment portfolios under our Discretionary Premier Investment Monitoring Service (D-PIMS) which can apply to all aspects of your personal wealth as it can operate for your investment ISAs, pensions, unit trust portfolios and even via Life Assurance Bonds where their special tax treatment may be advantageous for some clients. We are now in the very proud position of being entrusted with looking after approaching £350,000,000 of investments on behalf of clients and are the most longstanding and largest firm in our sector in the area. The D-PIMS service operates at 6 levels of ‘risk’ from ‘low’ through to ‘very high’ so we can find a suitablelevel for just about everybody, and has been operating for nearly 14 years. The performance of the portfolios can be seen on our website where you will see that we have consistently outperformed our peers and competition, often with much lower ‘volatility’, the values don’t jump around as much as our competitors. D-PIMS keeps you up to date with your investments, we can provide on-line valuations, formal 6 monthly reports and market commentaries via e mail from our investment team as and when we make changes to our portfolios. We think that this makes our clients feel much more ‘engaged’ with their money than any other service previously experienced and we find clients become much more interested in and aware of the world’s investment markets. 14

In running the portfolios we look forward over the coming months and try to position our investments in line with what we feel are the most likely outcomes of economic and political events. We reduce risk in our portfolios if we foresee potential risk events, and this is what helps control the volatility of the service. We are always looking for areas that may provide better returns, and have an excellent track record of introducing or increasing investments in sectors just ahead of their performance increasing. As well as running your investments for you we can provide full advice around the financial planning issuesrelating to your retirement, accessing your pensions, funding pensions, (which the ‘New Rules’ have made infinitely more ttractive),saving, protecting your family and your business, cash flw planning, Trustee Investment services, and from our experience in running our own business, we can often help out with business planning and corporate decision making. Our adviser team has hundreds of years experience across all market and economic cycles, why not contact one of them to pick their brains and get some financialplanning ideas? The first consulttion is always free and we are confident tht we can add value and improve your current situation - our existing clients certainly think so as can be seen from the testimonials on our website. So, why not find out wht we do - free of charge and contact us with any financial planning quey you may have. We will do all we can to help, free of charge until we commence chargeable work for you. We will notify you before we begin any chargeable work and provide an estimate of the costs involved.

Rayleigh Castle (Rayleigh Mount)

R

ayleigh Castle (also known as Rayleigh Mount) was a masonry and timber castle built in the 11th century shortly after the Norman conquest. All that exists today are the earthwork remains of its large motte-and-bailey. Rayleigh is one of 48 castles mentioned in the Domesday Survey of 1086 and the only one in Essex. The Survey shows that the castle was built by Swein - the son of Robert FitzWimarc (other spellings are Sweyn, Sweyne, and Suen.) FitzWimarc was a Norman lord and favourite of Edward the Confessor and Swein was one of the wealthiest landowners in post-Conquest Essex. Most land owners with significant holdings at the time of the Domesday Survey had disjointed, scattered properties however Swein was one of the exceptions and most of his land was within the hundreds of Rochford and Barstable with Rayleigh Castle as the administrative centre. When Swein died the castle passed to his son Robert de Essex and thento his grandson Henry d’Essex. Henry was accused of cowardice in battle in 1163

and subject to a trial by combat which he lost. The castle and it’s estates were confiscated to become the property of the king, Henry II. The property was then given by King John to Hubert de Burgh in around 1200 who probably used it as a source of building materials for the castle which he started building in 1230 at Hadleigh. On the death of Hubert’s son in the latter half of the 13th century, ownership of the castle reverted to the Crown. In 1394 King Richard II gave permission for the townspeople of Rayleigh to use the foundations of the castle as a source of stone. Since the foundations are explicitly mentioned in the document giving permission, it is unlikely that any other masonry structures remained by then. The site of the castle was used for grazing sheep after it fell into disuse. www.thelocalbusinessguide.co.uk
