Welcome A very warm welcome to the December edition of the Castle Point Local Business Guide, the new innovative magazine for the Castle Point community. Our aim is to provide readers with an interesting and stimulating reference magazine that also helps put them in touch with their local business community. With Christmas only a few weeks away we have a feature on ‘Where to find Santa In Essex’ (page 6) and an article on What’s On in Castle Point (page 38.) We have our regular local community feature on the Acres Way Kennels, based in Castle Point, (page 12) where we try and help re-home some lovely dogs that need a second chance. We also feature the Art Ministry, a local Hadleigh based charity providing subsidised arts and crafts sessions to all (page 8) and the Mickey Payne Memorial Foundation, a charity based in Castle Point with the purpose of raising more awareness of Dementia (page 28.)

The Art Ministry 20 Years of Making a Difference T
he Art Ministry, a Hadleigh based charity providing subsidised arts and crafts sessions to all, brought their 20th anniversary celebrations to a conclusion on Saturday, 27th October, by taking part in national “Make a Difference Day”. They ran free arts and crafts sessions for anyone and everyone and highlighted the many different skills that can be used in the wide variety of volunteering roles on offer at the charity. The event was a great success attracting new volunteers and students. The Art Ministry also made contact with a representative of the Castle Point Local Action Group, who speak up for young people and adults with learning disabilities in the area. It has been a busy 20th year for The Art Ministry. In March they held a fund-raising meal at Affinity 1777 and raised nearly £1000. The summer saw two trustees cycling a 52 mile route from London to Southend, raising over £1500 between them. This was followed by The Art Ministry’s Olympic themed Summer Fun Day, which over 100 people attended, and raised nearly £500.
There was no let up in September as the celebrations peaked when The Art Ministry held an exhibition at Hadleigh Old Fire Station to showcase some of the work produced by their students over the 20 years the charity has been operating. The event aimed to increase self esteem and social interaction of the charity’s students by sharing their works with a wider audience from across their local community, including the Castle Point Mayor, local residents, and supporters from the last 20 years. It was supported by a grant from the Big Lottery Fund. The event was attended by around 70 people including past and present students, volunteers and donors, and those who have supported the charity’s growth and assisted in achieving its charitable aims. In October The Art Ministry was Venue 1 on the Hadleigh Art Trail, with an exhibition of their students’ work and free workshops to “Create your own Matisse” and to “Decoupage a Bike”.

Can you help Re-Home a Dog from Acres Way Kennels? Adopting a Dog
I
This month’s featured dogs
f you think you might be able to offer a dog a good home, the first thing you need to do is to go down to the kennels, select a suitable dog you like, take it for a walk and see how you get on. Some people and dogs just don’t get along, so before reserving a dog, the Acres Way staff would need to see if you suit each other. If you have children, or another dog, they recommend that you bring them with you, to make sure that everyone will get on. Once you have visited the dogs, and hopefully found one that matches your lifestyle and expectations, a member of staff will arrange a convenient time for a home check. These are usually carried out within 2 or 3 days of your visit and take about half an hour. Once the home check is complete, you’ll be able to collect your dog. You will need to bring with you some identification showing your current address, and the £130 adoption fee.
p
Jess - American Bull Female / Age 1
Jess is an un-neutered female of about 1 year old. She is very friendly and very playful. We would recommend that she would go into an only dog family, although she is friendly with most dogs, and not with very small children as she is very strong.
Their staff will be on hand if you have any questions, and will be able to guide you through the adoption process.
Bruce - Staffordshire Bull Terrior q
All the staff and dogs at Acres Way look forward to seeing you.
Bruce has a lovely temperment. Ideally he would go with an experienced dog owner who enjoyed exercise

THE LOCAL BUSINESS GUIDE WORKING FOR THE COMMUNITY
Money Guidance
by Martin Lamb Dip. PFS Certs C11 (MP & ER)
T
here are two stories that have appeared widely in the media lately that you will continue to read and hear about. The first is that of ‘Workplace Pensions’ , the second is of changes to retail financial services legislation that will mean fees will replace commission as the method of payment for financial advice. There already seem to be misunderstandings about these, and much of what I have seen in the media is incorrect or misleading. It is true that Workplace Pensions that operate via ‘auto enrolment’ went live this month, however the Government are phasing in their introduction over a period of six years, starting with the very largest employers. For smaller employers the final phasing in date with contributions at the full level is not until October 2018, however many employers may choose to offer it ahead of the deadlines. Employees will be Automatically enrolled once the employer scheme goes live and will usually have their contributions matched by the employer, up to 4% of salary once the phasing in is complete. Whilst there are numerous points of detail to consider for both staff and employers, it is important that you are aware of your ‘staging dates’ to make employers comply with the new legislation. Should you not wish to join the scheme you will have to notify your scheme administrator in writing, and every three years your employer will re- enrol you for which you would have to opt out again if you did not wish to join. We believe the new Auto enrolment pensions will dramatically change the face of the Personal Pension market and offer opportunities to save for retirement that should not be ignored. At Joseph Lamb we have created a new business unit that will be assisting employers in the setting up and management of auto enrolment schemes, we have already provided well received seminars on the subject and can provide an e mail ‘news’ service and fact sheets that will keep you up to date with your specific responsibilities if you are an employer. Please email us at workplacepensions@josephlamb.co.uk to subscribe to the service.

I now turn to the changes within the rules that control how financial advisers operate. The new rules come into effect no later than January 1st next year and have four main objectives.
1 To improve the quality of advice by increasing the minimum qualification requirements for all advisers;
2 To finally remove product and provider bias by banning commission and replacing it with ‘adviser charging’ 3 To re-define the term ‘Independent Advice’ 4 To improve the financial stability of adviser firms by forcing them to have more capital in their business (not now effective until Jan 2015) We think these changes will radically alter the current advice market place. Already most High Street banks have announced they are pulling out of selling investment products, and many experienced Independent Financial Advisers cannot meet the new requirements and may well close their businesses or merge with larger firms. We are delighted to announce that we have already launched our new business model that meets the new regulations. We have revamped our fee structure to meet the new competitive challenge of the review, and despite what the media say, in the majority of cases you will NOT need to pay just to walk through our door. Our first consultation will continue to be free, and normally our charges, which incidentally in most cases will be lower than before, can still be met by any products you buy, but on terms agreed by you, not set by a product provider. If you want to know more about the’ Retail Distribution Review’ please go to our website, if your existing adviser is leaving the industry we would love to welcome you as a new client. Martin Lamb, Managing Director of Joseph R Lamb Independent Financial Advisers Ltd. This article does not constitute investment advice, readers should seek an assessment of their needs and requirements before making any decisions based on the content of this article

History of Castle Point The Battle of Benfleet D
uring the 9th century, much of Anglo-Saxon Britain fell under the control of Norse warriors from Denmark, Norway and Sweden. There was a constant threat of invasion until 880 when Alfred, King of Wessex, signed the “Peace of Wedmore” with the King of Denmark - Guthrum. They drew boundaries between Saxon and Norse England, ensuring a fragile peace. King of the Vikings After Guthrum’s death in 890 the Danes resumed their assault on Wessex. The Thames and the other creeks and estuaries gave easy access to Viking invaders and made the area vulnerable to attack and the Vikings used both Shoebury and Benfleet as bases. By Viking standards Benfleet was the perfect place to settle - it
had water and timber in abundance and it was also hidden from the main stream. The tidal marsh area also offered a degree of protection from attack by water. Vikings preferred to have easy access to their ships and this was always there preferred method of retreat should they need to withdraw. They also liked whenever possible to have a fortification surrounded by water. The King of the Vikings at this time was Haestein. He built a fort in the village, then known as “Beamflote” where left his wife and children and went off on his travels. Two Armies In 892, two armies arrived by sea in Kent and Essex. King Alfred and his son Edward, with the help of King Athelred of Mercia (who was Alfred’s son-inlaw.) They eventually pinned down the invaders and Edward led a surprise attack on the fort capturing Haestein’s wife and two children. Eventually Alfred returned them to Haestein and it is said that he vowed never to attack England again. The victory at Benfleet helped Edward to reclaim Essex, though the Norse invaders eventually took the English crown. Saxon Church A church was built by the Saxons in thanksgiving for the victory over the Vikings and St Mary’s church is the most recent church building occupying this site. The true ferocity of the battle didn’t really come to light until 1,000 years later when workmen building the South Benfleet railway station uncovered a large amount of charred bodies.

Working for the Community
The Mickey Payne Memorial Foundation T
he Mickey Payne Memorial Foundation is a charity based in Castle Point with the purpose of raising more awareness of Dementia. Their main concerns are the support of families with relatives suffering from Dementia and prolonging the dignity of the sufferers themselves. The foundation was created by Caroline Dearson and her family in memory of her father who died in August last year after suffering from Dementia for 18 months. “We decided to set up this foundation in memory of our dad as a tribute to him for all the things he had to go through whilst suffering with vascular dementia. He was a very dignified, smart, gentle man who had to go through a very undignified, aggressive illness..” Caroline Dearson Caroline decided to set up the foundation after having serious concerns about the way in which her father was cared for in 2 different care homes and now offers support to other families experiencing similar issues to her own. The charity now strives not only to support the families of those suffering from Dementia but also to explain the shortcomings in care to the Health Authorities. A host of organisations have already shown an interest in receiving advice from the foundation including South East Essex Primary Trust who have been working closely with Caroline with the piloting of a scheme known as “Dementia Buddies.” This is one of the ideas that was initially thought of by the family when they were launching the
28
foundation and will involve trained volunteers working as “Buddies” to support and help both patients and families. If you would like any advice and support on how Dementia is affecting your family, you can use the contact details below. Working for the Community
Adult Community Learning at K.E.S T
he King Edmund School in Rochford offers a comprehensive and varied Adult Education Programme. Our classes are open to family/friends of children attending the school as well as anyone else living locally. Our adult learners come from Thundersley, Benfleet, Hadleigh, Rayleigh, Hockley, Thorpe Bay, Leigh, Westcliff and afar and range from 18yrs to 100yrs! The Community Education program is a big part of our school ethos, and it has been steadily growing in recent years. First Steps Using the Computer is our most popular course. This is ideal for those completely new to computers, covers the basics in a simple and fun manner, taking away the fear-factor along with giving the learner confidence. Most of our ‘FirstSteppers’ progress to our follow-on course, Stepping Up, mainly because they enjoy the learning process and the social benefit of being part of the wider community. For those looking to acquire a nationally recognised IT qualification, we also offer day and evening classes for ECDL, (European Computer Driving License), and ECDL Advanced (4 Modules.) Our SurfSmart course will teach you how to surf the web, send emails, download photos and learn what social media sites such as Facebook & Twitter are all about. Why not come along and learn how to use Ebay? A popular choice is our FREE Online Banking workshop, which enables the learner to experiment with a ‘pretend’ online bank account, without the
risk to your own finances! Our LoveyourLaptop course might suit you if you have your own Laptop, or are looking to purchase one. The course aims to help you get the best out of your own Laptop, with topics such as showing you how to view your photographs, listen to music, watch a DVD and customise your own laptop. In recent years we have been fortunate enough to secure the services of excellent tutors running courses in Yoga, Art, Designa-web, Sage, Manual Book Keeping and Sign Language. These courses run each term and are well supported. We are planning on introducing Patchwork and Soft Furnishings courses next term. The majority of our classes are held during the day, making them ideal for those who work part time, are retired, or are looking to re-join the workforce. We have a dedicated classroom, fully equipped with computers and a smart board, which allows for professional and visual teaching. This ensures the lessons are active and the learning enjoyable. Our Monthly Book Club and Special evening meal/lunch events are also well supported and offer the chance for our adult learners to meet up, away from the classroom. Free refreshments are served during each lesson!
Community Open Morning on Wednesday 12th December at 10.00am for a cup of tea/coffee and an informal chat and find out about the best kept secret in town! For more details contact:

Recipe Corner Christmas Whoopie Pie Ingredients 125g butter or margarine, softened 200g caster sugar 1 large egg, beaten 350g plain flour 50g cocoa powder 1 1/4 tsp bicarbonate of soda 1 Teaspoon Baking Powder 250ml low-fat buttermilk For Buttercream Filling & Icing 150g unsalted butter, softened 225g icing sugar 25g cocoa powder A little icing sugar for dusting White, red and green ready-made royal icing
Method
Using an ice cream scoop, drop 6 scoops of the mixture on to each baking tray. Bake in the oven for 12-14 minutes until risen, lightly golden and firm to the touch. For the filling, put the butter in a mixing bowl and beat until soft. Gradually sieve in the icing sugar and cocoa, beating well after each addition, to make a smooth, spreadable icing. Spread thickly over the flat sides of the pie halves using a knife and sandwich them together. For the topping roll out the green icing thinly. Using a small holly leaf cutter, stamp out 32 leaves and set aside to firm up. Break off tiny pieces of red icing and roll to make small holly berries. Set aside. Spread the white icing over the peaked side of half the cold pies, smoothing the icing with the back of a knife to resemble custard, and decorate each with a couple of holly leaves and berries.
Preheat oven to 180째C/350째F/Gas Mark 4. Line 3 large baking trays with baking parchment. First make the pies. In a mixing bowl, cream the butter or margarine and sugar together until pale and creamy then beat in the egg. Sift the flour, cocoa and bicarbonate of soda into another bowl. Gradually add spoonfuls of the flour mixture to the creamed mixture, stirring well after each addition, along with sufficient buttermilk to make a smooth, thick cake mixture. Note: you may not 40
