Welcome A very warm welcome to the April 2013 edition of the Castle Point Local Business Guide. As we head into Spring, why not spend a day at one of the many glorious historic buildings and gardens in Essex. We feature 4 great potential days out in Essex for you to enjoy (page 6). We also have our regular ‘What’s on in Castle Point’ feature on page 18 to get you out and about in the local area. We also have our regular local community feature on the Acres Way Kennels, based in Castle Point. Both of the dogs we featured recently, Archie the Jack Russell Cross and Buddy the Rottweiler have now both been re-homed successfully. Let’s hope we can find more homes for the dogs we feature in this month’s edition (pages 12-13). In our other Community features this month we feature the St Mary’s 10k Challenge, a challenge to keep fit by walking the parish and enjoy Benfleet’s beautiful Country Park and outstanding views (page 34), and in our article on the History of Castle Point we feature the Canvey Island Coastguard Cottages (page 26). It’s St Georges Day on 23rd April and we provide some detail around history of St George, who he was and what became of him (page 28). In our regular recipe corner (page 38) we feature a traditional recipe for Chocolate Brownies and there is also our regular financial column from our financial expert Martin Lamb from Joseph R Lamb Independent Financial Advisors (see centre pages). If you have any interesting stories about Castle Point or if you are a local team, association or charity that would like to be featured in any future editions of the Local Business Guide then please drop us a line at: info@ thelocalbusinessguide.co.uk Have a great April!

Can you help Re-Home a Dog from Acres Way Kennels? f you think you can offer a dog a good home, the first thing you need to do is to go down to the kennels, select a suitable dog you like, take it for a walk and see how you get on. Some people and dogs just don’t get along, so before reserving a dog, the Acres Way staff would need to see if you suit each other. If you have children, or another dog, they recommend that you bring them with you, to make sure that everyone will get on.

THE LOCAL BUSINESS GUIDE WORKING FOR THE COMMUNITY

Money Guidance

by Martin Lamb Dip. PFS Certs C11 (MP & ER) , Pensions, Unit Trusts, ‘OEICS’, I SAs Bonds………… The world of investments can

be very confusing, and even intimidating. Each ‘vehicle’ has it’s own taxation rules, which may be more or less beneficial to you dependent on your own circumstances. It is vital that you seek advice to make sure that your savings and investments are in the most tax efficient vehicles for you, and equally important to ensure that the investments within each vehicle are suitable. An ISA for example can be a ‘cash’ ISA which simply puts your money on deposit, or a ‘stocks and shares’ ISA. The term ‘stocks and shares’ ISA is misleading, as there are many investments that you can place in one these that are not stocks and shares such as Property funds, Government and Corporate Bond funds, Overseas bonds funds and Commodity funds. You can, with advice, build a balanced portfolio of investments inside a Stocks and Shares ISA, or indeed a personal pension. Whist it feels sensible to take little or no risk with the underlying investments, it is very important to understand how the world is changing and that taking little ‘risk’ with your savings could end up costing you dearly. At Joseph Lamb’s we believe that inflation will continue to increase, and don’t forget that the governments new ‘CPI’ inflation measure misleads. Have you filled your car up or a shopping trolley lately? We are all experiencing inflation running much higher than the official figure. In the meantime interest rates are now almost certain to remain at or around these alltime lows for years to come as the Government has to keep borrowing costs down, or we are all doomed! So whilst it may appear that leaving money in 22

‘safe havens’ such as cash or Government Bonds is the right thing to do, inflation will almost certainly erode it’s value very significantly. We have lost track of how many clients we have who retired ten or more years ago and are now feeling the pinch. If you want your money to deliver an income, then inflation is an even bigger problem as if you spend your interest the remaining capital balance becomes worth less and less very quickly. Only by investing some of your money in ‘real assets’ do you stand any chance of beating inflation going forwards. It may appear that ‘Investments’ are not delivering, but that is simply not the case, the returns since 2004 in our Medium risk portfolios are up to 8.13% pa, including the impact of the 2008 crisis, and have been performing more strongly than that recently. The world is changing, and still growing, but the relative importance of ‘The West’ is declining and any investment portfolio should reflect this. You can only invest in this growth by using a diverse portfolio not by leaving your money on deposit or in Cash ISAs, which can be transferred to Stocks and Shares ISAs. Inflation doesn’t stop when you retire! It must be allowed for in your retirement planning and you must look further down the road than age 65. Many of us will live longer in retirement than we earned a good living for……….this means we will all need more savings behind us than we imagine. Start now, tomorrow will be too late! And seek proper advice from acknowledge advisers with a long term track record! Martin Lamb, Managing Director of Joseph R Lamb Independent Financial Advisers Ltd. Investments may go down as well as up, Past performance is no guarantee of future performance. This article does not constitute investment advice, readers should seek an assessment of their needs and requirements before making any decisions based on the content of this article

History of Castle Point

Coastguard Cottages - Canvey Island n the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Canvey Island was a favourite haunt of smugglers which led to a coastguard station being built close to the Lobstersmack Public House.

I

In 1822, the Watch became the Coastguard Service and was run by the Admiralty. The admiralty bought 3 acres of land at what was known as “Drunken Marsh” on which to build the new coastguard station.

“Preventive Men”

New Coastguard Station

Before the Coastguard Cottages were built, what were known as “Preventive Men” were based in an old wooden vessel at Hole Haven called “Emulous.” According to the Canvey Cyclopdia by D.M McDowd, (unpublished) this watch vessel was moored in 1813 and “manned by Cornish, Devonian and Ulster men against smuggling which was rife then on Canvey.”

The new station consisted of seven weatherboarded cottages and an officer’s house opposite the Lobstersmack in an ideal position for keeping a watch on the river. There was also a selection of outbuildings and an observation tower. Stationed there an officer of the Preventive Service, a chief boatman, two commissioned boatmen, four boatmen, and three other men.

The “Emulous” also had a sister ship, the “Pembcote” which was based at Leigh-on-Sea but apparently neither of them had much success in thwarting the local smuggling industry.

The Admiralty also constructed a jetty and slipway on the sea wall in 1902. It is not known whether they ever caught any smugglers in the 97 years that the station was in use but, more than likely, simply the fact that they were there would have limited the smuggling activity. Sold For Scrap The Admiralty ceased to man the station in 1910 and the cottages were let to private tenants for about 3 shillings a per week. In 1924, the jetty and slipway were sold for scrap. The grounds where the coastguards worked is now a caravan park although the seven cottages remain as listed buildings.

St George’s Day - 23rd April A

lthough St George has been England’s patron Saint since the 14th Century, over a quarter of English people don’t know who our patron Saint is and only 1 in 5 people know that St George’s Day falls on the 23rd April! Every country in the UK has it’s own patron Saint and since the 14th Century, the patron Saint of England has been St George. His emblem is a red cross on a white background. Very little is known about the real St George although, oddly enough, he wasn’t actually English but was born in Cappadocia in what is now Turkey in approximately 280AD. At the age of seventeen, George joined the Roman army and soon became renowned for his bravery. He was a Christian and although he served under a pagan Emperor, he never forgot his faith. The Emperor, Diocletian, gave him many important missions, and it

is thought that on one of these he came to England. Whilst in England, he heard that the Emperor was putting all Christians to death and so he returned to Rome to help his fellow Christians. He pleaded with the Emperor to spare their lives. Diocletian did all he could to persuade St. George to give up his faith, but he refused and was finally beheaded on 23 April 303. There is no doubt that St George was indeed very brave and did much to help the early Christians. However, much of his story is shrouded in mystery and legend, the most famous of which being the story of St George slaying a dragon. There are many different versions of the story but the most common is that of a town being terrorised by a dragon. A young princess was offered to the dragon and when St George heard of this, he rode into the village, slayed the dragon and rescued the princess. The slaying of the dragon was first credited to St George in the twelfth century - long after his death and may have come about due to the portrayal of the devil as a dragon in the Middle Ages. Although it is very unlikely that this story of St George is true, he is always depicted as a knight carrying a shield with a red cross, generally sitting on horse killing a dragon. Truth or legend, St George represents the victory of good over evil. Traditionally a red rose is worn on St George’s Day but, unlike other countries, England does not really celebrate it’s national day. Unlike the fireworks for America’s Independence Day and the parties and parades for Ireland’s St Patrick’s Day, St George’s Day tends to be just another ordinary day!

Recipe Corner Chocolate Brownies There is nothing quite like a fudgy, dense chocolate brownie. There are so many variations on the classic chocolate brownie recipe and this one comes from Cadbury’s.

Ingredients 175g Dark Chocoate such as Bournvillekikk, broken up 175g unsalted butter, diced 3 medium eggs 250g caster sugar 75g plain flour 40g Cocoa Powder 50g chopped walnuts (optional)

Method

Whisk the eggs and sugar until thick and creamy, pour over the chocolate mixture and fold in. Sift in the flour and cocoa and fold in the nuts. Pour into the prepared tin, making sure it goes right into the corners and bake for 25-30 minutes. The top should be crusty with a slight wobble underneath. 5. Cool completely in the tin (can refrigerate overnight which aids cutting) and then cut into squares or triangles.

Preheat oven to 180C, gas mark 4. Grease and line the base and sides of a 20cm square cake tin with baking parchment. Melt the chocolate and butter in a bowl over a pan of simmering water. Cool slightly.

Vacant Vacationers Escape from the dreary winter weather with a giggle at our amusing selection of genuine complaints from holidaymakers

“We went on holiday to Spain and had a problem with the taxi drivers as they were all Spanish.” “I compared the size of our one bedroom apartment with our friends three bedroom apartment and ours was significantly smaller.” “The brochure stated: ‘No Hairdressers at the Accomodation.’ We are trainee hairdressers - will we be ok to stay there?”

“I think it should be explained in the brochure that the local store does not sell proper biscuits like Custard Creams or Ginger Nuts” “It’s lazy of the local shopkeepers to close in the afternoons. I often needed to buy things during ‘Siesta’ time - this should be banned” “On my holiday to Goa in India, I was disgusted to find that almost every restaurant served Curry. I don’t like spicy food at all.” “We booked our excursion to a water park but no-one told us we had to bring ou swimming costumes and towels.” “The beach was too sandy.” “We found that the sand was not like the sand in the brochure. Your brochure shows the sand as yellow but it was white.” “Topless sunbathing on the beach should be banned. The holiday was ruined as my husband spent all day looking at other women.” 18

“We had to queue outside with no air conditioning.” “My fiance and I booked a twin bedded room but we were placed in a double bedded room. We now hold you responsible that I find myself pregnant. This would not have happened if you had put us in the room we had booked.” “It took us nine hours to fly home from Jamaica to England. It took the Americans only three hours to get home.” “The roads were uneven.” “I was bitten by a mosquito. No-one said they could bite.” “It is your duty as a tour operator to advise us of noisy or unruly guests before we travel.” “No-one told us there would be fish in the sea. The children were startled.” “There are too many Spanish people. The reception speaks Spanish. The food is Spanish. Too many foreigners now abroad.”
