Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Chris Miller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Benfleet, Hadleigh, Thundersly and Canvey

Island areas and Chris is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Chris a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Can you help Re-Home a Dog from Acres Way Kennels? Adopting a Dog

I

f you think you can offer a dog a good home, the first thing you need to do is to go down to the kennels, select a suitable dog you like, take it for a walk and see how you get on. Some people and dogs just don’t get along, so before reserving a dog, the Acres Way staff would need to see if you suit each other. If you have children, or another dog, they recommend that you bring them with you, to make sure that everyone will get on. Once you have visited the dogs, and hopefully found one that matches your lifestyle and expectations, a member of staff will arrange a convenient time for a home check. These are usually carried out within 2

or 3 days of your visit and take about half an hour. Once the home check is complete, you’ll be able to collect your dog. You will need to bring with you some identification showing your current address, and the £130 adoption fee. Their staff will be on hand if you have any questions, and will be able to guide you through the adoption process. All the staff and dogs at Acres Way look forward to seeing you Re-Homing Update We are thrilled that all the dogs included in last months issue have been successfully re-homed. Amy the Lurcher / Staff Cross, Toby the cross breed, Honey the Rottweiler and Wobbles the Schitzu (below) have all found loving families.

Canvey Island Town Council Invitation to get involved in Christmas E

ven though there are still four months or 124 days to go to the festive season, Canvey Island Town Council’s preparations are well underway to hold their annual Christmas Event with Lights Switch On Saturday, 29th November in the town centre on Furtherwick Road. Because of the Christmas theme, the Town Council is looking for local businesses and individuals to get involved, for example by taking stalls selling Christmas gifts, crafts and food and drink as part of a Christmas market. Local businesses are also asked to contact the Town Council if they are willing to get involved in some other way in the lead up to the event and festive season. Cllr Peter May, Chairman of Canvey Island Town Council commented: “This is our seventh annual Christmas Event so it is well established and popular with the local community. The Town Council aims to make improvements to the Christmas Event each year. If you have crafts or Christmas goods that you may be

interested in selling, whether you are a business or individual, please get in touch with the Town Council’s office. If you can support the Town Council in any other way, we would be interested in hearing from them. The Town Council would recognise support given through our publicity. The more that businesses and community gets involved, the better it will be to continue to build on previous successful events.” Each year there is a variety of activities organised by the Town Council’s Christmas Event to get people into the spirit of the festive season and help local businesses in the town centre including an entertainment programme hosted by Heart Essex Radio, children’s games, fun fair, Christmas stalls, real reindeers and the Christmas lights switch on. Further details including the full programme will be announced nearer the time. For more information call 01268 683965 or visit www.canveyisland-tc.gov.uk.

Money Guidance H

MRC have announced the final rules following the momentous budget changes announced earlier in the year. These new rules will become effective from April 6th next year, so if you are planning on retiring soon you really need to be aware of them. They give new flexibilities not seen before, that counter many of the anti-pension arguments and in one fell swoop will have made saving for retirement via traditional pension policies rather than Buy to Let or ‘exotic’ schemes, truly interesting again. In fact I wonder whether the Government’s concern over the proliferation of ‘exotic’ (often offshore property) schemes and house price rises caused in part by Buy to Let investors alienating ‘real’ buyers and creating an economic bubble, was not a primary reason behind their thinking in trying to get conventional pension planning back on savers financial radars? The two main causes of concern for savers in pensions have been the low level of income available from annuities due to low interest rates and the idea that pension funds ‘die’ with you. Neither of these have been strictly true for a while, but by the Government making pensions more flexible more and more people are now thinking positively about saving for retirement again. With auto enrolment in the workplace now happening, we all need to have confidence that our pension funds will deliver a real benefit for us and our families. I believe this has been achieved with the new rules, which in a very concise summary are; Tax Free cash remains at 25% of your pension fund from age 55. No requirement for anyone to buy an annuity or conventional income product. Your pension can remain invested until needed, even after obtaining your Tax Free cash. There will be no limits on the amount you take from your pension. If you wish to enjoy it over the early years of retirement that will be your choice. If you would rather invest it to make a sustainable income, or even any combination of income and lump sum withdrawals then again, the choice is yours. If an annuity hasn’t been purchased by the time you die, you can transfer your entire remaining fund tax free to your spouse. Or you can leave the fund to your children subject to a tax charge which is currently

18

under review and expected to reduce. As long as professional advice is sought you can transfer from Defined Benefit or Final Salary schemes in order to benefit from these new flexibilities - this may be especially useful for high earners or those with a limited life expectancy. This option will be removed for Statutory Government schemes such as Local Government, Civil Service etc. Prior to the new rules being introduced in April 2015 small pension funds of less than £30,000 and up to three plans with values less than £10,000 can be accessed entirely with no need to buy any form of ‘income’ product. These can be accessed from age 60. As always there is some complex detail behind these rules, especially around taxation and on-going pension contribution allowances, so before making any steps you should always seek advice from a professional regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. The Government have promised to fund a scheme to provide everyone with ‘guidance’ around these new rules, but we have yet to see what this will look like and how comprehensive it will be. Whilst it is a good idea to make guidance more available, would you rather talk to someone with basic training - or trust your finances for the rest of your life to a qualified professional? I know which I would rather choose! At Joseph Lamb we have been dealing with pensions and retirement for nearly 45 years and have a number of fully qualified pension professionals ready to guide you through the new retirement maze. As always an initial consultation is free and we may be able to simply point you in the right direction, or formulate a plan for your finances for the rest of your retirement, including the most efficient way to provide legacies for your family.

Ghost Stories From Castle Point E

very town boasts its share of ghostly sightings and spooky stories scary enough to send a shiver up the bravest of spines. Unsurprisingly, Castle Point area is no exception and as October is the month of Halloween we bring you some of the spookiest.

Benfleet’s Conservative Club is rumoured to be haunted by Lady Hamilton, lover of Lord Horatio Nelson. The ancient building certainly has an eerie feel about it and stories of Lady Hamilton patrolling the rooms and corridors of the 16th-century building in search of her hero are well known to members. Legend has it that Nelson used the building as a secret meeting place for romantic liaisons whenever he was back from his tussles with Napoleon’s fleets. Nearly 200 years later, she’s still there or so tales and sightings of the ghostly lady who died in 1815 at the age of 50 would have us believe. Hadleigh castle has had a varied history and many ghost stories have been told about the place. During the 19th century, secret chambers in the ruins of the castle were supposed to have been used by smugglers to hide their ill-gotten gains. They would have got to the castle mostly from the river. They burned coloured lights and made strange noises to frighten away nosy locals. It was also during this time that the castle got a reputation for being haunted by a woman in white. A milkmaid called Sally, from Castle Farm, saw the ghostly woman early one morning. The ghost commanded Sally to meet her again at the castle at midnight. But the girl was too frightened to go. She was met the next morning by the ghostly woman, who was so annoyed that she had been disobeyed that she hit the milkmaid around the head, almost dislocating her neck. After this, the girl was known as “wry-neck Sal.” 20

Another “ghost” in the Hadleigh area is that of James “Cunning” Murrel, a local wise man who could break witches curses, cure disease and see into the future. His spirit is still seen on the Hadleigh Downs picking herbs for his potions, some times followed by dancing blue lights. In the 19th century, a farm labourer and boy were working in the fields of Thundersley. An argument flared up between the two and the man killed the boy. From then on, piercing screams would be heard from the wood near Kingsley Lane where he was buried. The screams were heard until the murderer confessed to his crime to drinkers in the White Hart pub.. It is believed that Canvey Island has it’s very own Viking ghost. On the occasional late night, a misty figure has been spotted walking along the mudflats at Canvey Point and it is believed that he was left behind by his fleet and waited for his ship to return only to drown in the rising tide. The Viking ghost has been reported to have been six feet tall, fierce looking, with a beard and long moustache.

ou might just pinch yourself if you spot a bright, white lobster on your next visit to Southend Sea- Life Adventure Aquarium. But don’t worry, your beady eyes aren’t deceiving you – it really is an incredibly rare albino specimen. The pearly-white crustacean has just arrived after being caught off the Dorset coast, and will play a leading role in Sea-Life Aquarium’s educational activities at the popular centre on Southend’s Eastern Esplanade, as Senior Aquarist Amelie Brackin explains: “Because he is a rarity – and therefore something of an oddity – his albinism allows us to demonstrate to our visitors the rich diversity and uniqueness of the great many creatures living in our seas. As an educational example, we’ll feature him in our talks about albinism occurs and the effect it can have on a species. Many people assume that lobsters are red as they only see them served on a plate. They’re intrigued when they see their true colour is actually dark blue but are even more fascinated to see a completely white one.” Amelie adds: “Although they are extremely rare, compared to normal lobsters, albinos are not impossible to find – albeit your chances are approximately a million to one. Scientifically speaking, there may be some environmental factor that has increased albinisms in lobsters, or a certain habitat condition that has allowed them to survive longer on the west coast.” Albinism is caused by a lack of melanin in the skin, which means there is a lack of colour pigment. Amelie’s

24

colleague Jennifer Vowles explains that this adds to Sea-Life’s latest acquisition’s relative uniqueness: “I believe that only one or two other albino lobsters have been found around the UK in the last 20 years or so. In the wild, it would be very hard for an albino animal to survive for very long as they are unable to hide and are therefore vulnerable to predators eating them. But other than that, they are the same as a normal lobster.” The lobster has settled well into his new home and staff report that he appears to be feeling all-white. Sea-Life Adventure is the South East’s premier aquatic attraction, featuring over 40 displays and an active conservation programme. Find out more at www.sealifeadventure.co.uk

History of Castle Point War Time Castle Point

D

uring the Second World War, Castle Point played a significant part in the country’s defensive strategy and the position of Canvey Island, overlooking the Thames estuary, made it a perfect place from which to defend against invasion. Canvey Island was part of what was known as the GHQ Line. (General Headquarters Line) This was one of over 50 defence lines built in the United Kingdom to contain an expected German invasion. Following the Dunkirk evacuation, when the British Army had abandoned most of its equipment in France, it was decided that a static system of defensive lines around England should be built of which the GHQ Line was the longest and most important as it was designed to protect London. On the section of the line in Essex that ran between Great Chesterford and Canvey Island, the defences were made up of around 400 concrete pillboxes. These were dug-in guard posts made from concrete with loopholes through which to fire weapons. They are in effect a trench firing step hardened to protect against smallarms fire and grenades and raised to improve the field of fire. South Benfleet, Hadleigh, Thundersley and Daws Heath were all on the route from Southend-on-Sea to London so it was particularly important that these areas provided the means by which to stop invaders getting through to the capital. To counter the sea-borne threat, two 6-inch naval guns which had first been installed during World War One were re-activated at Deadman’s Point on Canvey Island. At night, coastal artillery searchlights swept the 30

river from emplacements alongside the guns. Close by, at Scars Elbow Point, quick-firing 6-pounder guns which could fire at over 100 rounds per minute waited to stop any forays by torpedo boats. North of Benfleet Creek, the towns were fortified by road barriers of concrete and steel with pillboxes and infantry positions covering all the major access routes. Essex was home to around 40 heavy anti-aircraft gun sites, four of which were in Castle Point. Two were located on Canvey Island one in Hadleigh and another at Jotman’s Hall. From these, 3.7 inch and 4.5inch guns could launch their shells well over 20,000 feet into the sky. Later, Hadleigh was equipped with even larger 5.25-inch guns which were capable of reaching up to an astonishing 40,000 feet. The remains of the World War 2 Heavy Anti-Aircraft gun site based at Sandpit Hill, Hadleigh can still be seen today. 30 structures can still be identified on the site including a rare Operations Room / Generator Block. During and after World War Two, the site at Hadleigh was a complex site of gun emplacements, ancillary buildings and structures and accommodation huts.
