Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Chris Miller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Benfleet, Hadleigh, Thundersly and Canvey
Island areas and Chris is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family
of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Chris a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Can you help Re-Home a Dog from Acres Way Kennels? Adopting a Dog
I
f you think you can offer a dog a good home, the first thing you need to do is to go down to the kennels, select a suitable dog you like, take it for a walk and see how you get on. Some people and dogs just don’t get along, so before reserving a dog, the Acres Way staff would need to see if you suit each other. If you have children, or another dog, they recommend that you bring them with you, to make sure that everyone will get on. Once you have visited the dogs, and hopefully found one that matches your lifestyle and expectations, a member of staff will arrange a convenient time for a home check. These are usually carried out within 2 or 3 days of your visit and take about half an hour. Once the
home check is complete, you’ll be able to collect your dog. You will need to bring with you some identification showing your current address, and the £130 adoption fee. Their staff will be on hand if you have any questions, and will be able to guide you through the adoption process. All the staff and dogs at Acres Way look forward to seeing you Re-Homing Update We are pleased that Barney the Labradoodle and Stitch the Lurcher that we featured in our last issue have both been successfully re-homed. Stitch is now living in Wales! Boycie the Staff however is still looking for a loving home.

Money Guidance New Pension Rules T
he incredible new rules have now been confirmed and have turned pensions into the most flexible & tax efficient savings plans, given that your contributions to a pension receive tax relief and then grow virtually tax free over the years. There is now no limit on the amount you can take from your pension (currently from age 55). If you wish to enjoy it over the early years of retirement that will be your choice. If you would rather invest it to make a sustainable income, or any combination of income and lump sum withdrawals then again, the choice is yours. There are two new ways to facilitate this:
Flexi Access Drawdown This allows you to take up to 25% tax free lump sum, the balance of your pension fund is then invested in a Flexi Access Drawdown. From the invested fund you are free to take withdrawals of any amount at any time. This could be as regular monthly payments to meet your living expenses or one off withdrawals to fund things like holidays or new cars, but beware anything above the 25% will be taxed as income, so any ideas you have about ‘spending’ your pension fund should be very carefully considered. The media have been talking about withdrawing your fund to buy rental property. This makes little sense to us - why would you move a now highly ‘liquid’ tax exempt fund into a very ‘illiquid’ taxable asset?
Uncrystallised Funds Pension Lump Sum (UFPLS) This options allows a lump sum of any amount to be taken from uncrystallised funds (funds from which benefits have not yet been taken) , and leaves the remaining funds invested and in the pension. 14
These lump sums are paid as 25% tax free/75% taxed as income. For those not requiring their tax free lump sum upfront, this is likely to be the most tax efficient method of receiving retirement income – 25% less income tax than would otherwise be the case.
Death Benefits The new rules provide unparalleled opportunity to pass on wealth, free of tax. Previously once ‘crystallised’ the only way your fund could pass to someone other than your spouse was after a 55% tax charge. It is now possible to pass your pension fund on death without tax. If you die before 75 your beneficiaries will pay no tax at all, after 75 the fund is tax free but any withdrawals your beneficiaries make are taxed as income at their rate of tax. All the old objections to pensions have been swept away. You must consider maximising contributions to pensions during your working life. The tax efficiencies are enormous. Equally you must get advice on the best way to withdraw your pension or it will be too easy to run out of money or pay far too much tax in retirement. As experienced and qualified pension and retirement advisers we would of course be happy to help.

Southend Community Southend Citizen of the Year 2015
D
o you know an individual or group who has made an outstanding contribution to the community? An unsung hero who has performed an act of kindness? Or, someone who just needs to be recognised for being noble? The Citizen of Southend Award is back for its eighth year giving you the chance to nominate a local hero. The award is designed to celebrate an outstanding contribution within the community by an individual or group of people, aged between 8 and 80 years old. Winner of the ‘Silver’ award will also receive a trophy and a £300 cash prize. The ‘Bronze’ winner will receive a trophy and £100. The awards will be presented at a special ceremony in the autumn. 16

Southend History The Palace Hotel
T
he Palace Hotel was opened in 1904 and was originally called “The Metropole”. It was once the only 5 star hotel on the southeast coast and had 200 bedrooms, a billiard room and a magnificent ballroom. During during World War One, several buildings in Southend-on-Sea were converted into hospitals including The Palace Hotel. It became the Queen Mary Royal Naval Hospital and treated over 4,000 soldiers during the war. As they recovered from their injuries, the soldiers would gather on the balconies of the hotel to look out over the pier and seafront. They became something of an attraction, with dozens of people gathering underneath to pass tobacco, sweets, flowers and even buttons up to the soldiers. Funds were raised through a series of “Gift Days” when a VIP guest would attend to receive gifts which were then auctioned off. The VIPs were often royalty – and in June 1915, Queen Mary herself was the guest of honour.
20
In 1952, Laurel and Hardy stayed at The Palace with their wives whilst performing at the Odeon Cinema in the High Street. During the 1950s & 1960s the Palace fell behind with the times and eventually came into financial difficulties. It was then bought by Polish refugee Motel Burstin who turned the building into an old people’s home. In the early 1970s the Palace provided cut price bed and breakfast but by now the building was beginning to fall into disrepair. During the 90s and the early 2000s eastern European asylum seekers and local homeless people took up residence in the rooms, until the building was finally closed and gutted in 2005. The Palace has now been transformed into a plush modern hotel with wonderful refurbishment to the interior and retaining the distinct character externally. It has been renamed the Park Inn Palace. In memory of it’s famous guests in 1952, the hotel have named 2 adjoining function rooms, the Stan Laurel and The Oliver Hardy Rooms.

The first ever Southend-on-Sea Maritime Festival (6th -7th June 2015) promises to be a weekend of free nautical but nice activities, promotions and events for all the family. Southend-on-Sea will surely be on the crest of a wave as it celebrates its fascinating maritime history, heritage and visitor appeal during two lively days of fun on the seafront. Southend-on-Sea Borough Council is organising the event to celebrate the maritime heritage of the borough. Funding for the festival has been provided by the Coastal Communities Fund, to which the Council made a successful bid in 2013 to improve the Southend Seafront Economy and raise the profile of the history and culture of the area. The all-new festival will include live music, celebrity chefs’ cookery demonstrations, wine tastings, opportunities to try your hand at rowing, sand castlemaking and sculptures through to history talks and

re-enactments. Whether you’re a salty old sea dog, or confirmed landlubber, there’s plenty to see and do for everyone. Graham Longley, Executive Councillor for Enterprise, Tourism and Economic Development, says “I am delighted that we have secured external funding to run this event and I am looking forward to being involved and part of it. We have a Film Festival, Folk Festival, and a Jazz Festival so I am very pleased that this year we will also have a Maritime Festival that will explore our important relationship with the water and our wonderful seafront. This will be a wonderful event for all the family with a host of activities that will boost the seafront economy and be a great weekend for residents, businesses and visitors alike. I hope that it is well supported and could lead to it becoming a fixture in the Southend-on-Sea events calendar.”.
