Can you help Re-Home a Dog from Acres Way Kennels? 

Adopting a Dog

Archie -

Successfully Rehomed

I

f you think you can offer a dog a good home, the first thing you need to do is to go down to the kennels, select a suitable dog you like, take it for a walk and see how you get on. Some people and dogs just don’t get along, so before reserving a dog, the Acres Way staff would need to see if you suit each other. If you have children, or another dog, they recommend that you bring them with you, to make sure that everyone will get on. Once you have visited the dogs, and hopefully found one that matches your lifestyle and expectations, a member of staff will arrange a convenient time for a home check. These are usually carried out within 2 or 3 Name:Once Archie Breed: Jack Russell cross Age: 2 days of your visit and take about half an hour. the home check is complete, you’ll be able toGood collect your with children: Unknown dog. You will need to bring with you someGood identification Re-Homing Update with dogs: No showing your current address, and the £130 adoption Additional information: Can be nervous on initial meet fee. Rayleigh History Parish Church of Holy Trinity. R

esidents of the Rayleigh Parish have been worshipping at the site of the Holy Trinity Church since long before the current church was built. The present building was built between 1380 and 1420 but was preceded by a Norman church and it is believed by local historians that there was an even earlier small wooden church on the site. The main feature of the church is its splendid tower reaching up 70ft high. The tower dates from the 15th Century and carries eight bells, the last two of which were hung in 1897. It is built from Kentish rag-stone - a material that has been used extensively throughout the building. The tower incorporates stones that were taken from the castle when it fell into disuse. The top of the tower affords

a splendid view in all directions over the surrounding countryside. It is often open to visitors on Bank Holidays. Entrance to the church is though a sturdy, red brick porch which was added in Tudor times and has been used in the past as both a schoolroom for the village children and a refuge for vagrants. Over the years, several major restoration programmes have been undertaken as the church became dilapidated. The main periods of restoration were between 1795, 1842-43 and 1912-13. In 1976, a new church hall was built to replace the old parish room (which is now the restaurant that you can see in front of the church) and in 1995, the new hall was connected to the church with the opening of the Parish Centre by way of the Link Corridor which holds a splendid suite of rooms and offices.

THE LOCAL BUSINESS GUIDE WORKING FOR THE COMMUNITY

Money Guidance

by Martin Lamb Dip. PFS Certs C11 (MP & ER) , Pensions, Unit Trusts, ‘OEICS’, I SAs Bonds………… The world of investments can

be very confusing, and even intimidating. Each ‘vehicle’ has it’s own taxation rules, which may be more or less beneficial to you dependent on your own circumstances. It is vital that you seek advice to make sure that your savings and investments are in the most tax efficient vehicles for you, and equally important to ensure that the investments within each vehicle are suitable. An ISA for example can be a ‘cash’ ISA which simply puts your money on deposit, or a ‘stocks and shares’ ISA. The term ‘stocks and shares’ ISA is misleading, as there are many investments that you can place in one these that are not stocks and shares such as Property funds, Government and Corporate Bond funds, Overseas bonds funds and Commodity funds. You can, with advice, build a balanced portfolio of investments inside a Stocks and Shares ISA, or indeed a personal pension. Whist it feels sensible to take little or no risk with the underlying investments, it is very important to understand how the world is changing and that taking little ‘risk’ with your savings could end up costing you dearly. At Joseph Lamb’s we believe that inflation will continue to increase, and don’t forget that the governments new ‘CPI’ inflation measure misleads. Have you filled your car up or a shopping trolley lately? We are all experiencing inflation running much higher than the official figure. In the meantime interest rates are now almost certain to remain at or around these alltime lows for years to come as the Government has to keep borrowing costs down, or we are all doomed! So whilst it may appear that leaving money in 16

‘safe havens’ such as cash or Government Bonds is the right thing to do, inflation will almost certainly erode it’s value very significantly. We have lost track of how many clients we have who retired ten or more years ago and are now feeling the pinch. If you want your money to deliver an income, then inflation is an even bigger problem as if you spend your interest the remaining capital balance becomes worth less and less very quickly. Only by investing some of your money in ‘real assets’ do you stand any chance of beating inflation going forwards. It may appear that ‘Investments’ are not delivering, but that is simply not the case, the returns since 2004 in our Medium risk portfolios are up to 8.13% pa, including the impact of the 2008 crisis, and have been performing more strongly than that recently. The world is changing, and still growing, but the relative importance of ‘The West’ is declining and any investment portfolio should reflect this. You can only invest in this growth by using a diverse portfolio not by leaving your money on deposit or in Cash ISAs, which can be transferred to Stocks and Shares ISAs. Inflation doesn’t stop when you retire! It must be allowed for in your retirement planning and you must look further down the road than age 65. Many of us will live longer in retirement than we earned a good living for……….this means we will all need more savings behind us than we imagine. Start now, tomorrow will be too late! And seek proper advice from acknowledge advisers with a long term track record! Martin Lamb, Managing Director of Joseph R Lamb Independent Financial Advisers Ltd. Investments may go down as well as up, Past performance is no guarantee of future performance. This article does not constitute investment advice, readers should seek an assessment of their needs and requirements before making any decisions based on the content of this article

The Admirable Crichton - A Play Thursday 16th - Saturday 18th May 2013 Starts: 7.30pm. Saturday Matinee Performance: 2pm The Mill Arts & Events Centre, Mill Hall, Bellingham Lane, Rayleigh, SS6 7ED Rayleigh Operatic & Dramatic Society present J.M. Barrie’s witty social commentary. Aristocrat Lord Loam has radical views on equality which he promotes at monthly tea parties at which the family are expected to wait upon the servants. However, quintessentially English butler Crichton highly disapproves of these gatherings which turn the upstairs-downstairs order of the household on its head. When the family and most trusted servants embark on a yachting voyage and become shipwrecked, it is Crichton who has the resourcefulness to save them all. Away from England and society constraints, roles and opinions begin to change on the island. With everyone’s true colours on show, will life ever be the same again? Tickets cost £10 adults & £8 concessions and are available from the Box Office on 01268 771751 18

the art of accountancy

Is your accountant right for you? It is the start of a new tax year and one that sees many changes with Real Time information (RTI) for payrolls, universal credits and cash accounting for the self employed. It is a time when many consider their business structure, tax efficiency and planning for the year ahead. As part of this review they may change accountants having been disappointed with the previous years tax return and a lack of advice regarding changes to legislation, and the effect on them. The question though is how do you know that you are not just going to end up in the same position or worse? Choosing an accountant is an important decision and you need to find one that matches your needs, you feel comfortable with, can trust and whose fee levels are fair. We've produced the following checklist to help you choose and get the most from your accountant.  Understanding. Get an accountant you can speak to openly and honestly that you understand and who understands you.  Will Visit You. Ask them if they will visit you for an initial consultation free of charge. Why do you have to spend time travelling, find parking and wait around for them when they are trying to get your business?  Gives Tax Ideas. Ask them what tax ideas they have for you. You want an accountant who will pro-actively come up with regular new ideas. 20

Recipe Corner Chocolate Brownies There is nothing quite like a fudgy, dense chocolate brownie. There are so many variations on the classic chocolate brownie recipe and this one comes from Cadbury’s.

Ingredients 175g Dark Chocoate such as Bournvillekikk, broken up 175g unsalted butter, diced 3 medium eggs 250g caster sugar 75g plain flour 40g Cocoa Powder 50g chopped walnuts (optional)

Method

Whisk the eggs and sugar until thick and creamy, pour over the chocolate mixture and fold in. Sift in the flour and cocoa and fold in the nuts. Pour into the prepared tin, making sure it goes right into the corners and bake for 25-30 minutes. The top should be crusty with a slight wobble underneath. 5. Cool completely in the tin (can refrigerate overnight which aids cutting) and then cut into squares or triangles.

Preheat oven to 180C, gas mark 4. Grease and line the base and sides of a 20cm square cake tin with baking parchment. Melt the chocolate and butter in a bowl over a pan of simmering water. Cool slightly.

Don’t fill the house with ‘junk’ for the kids, it’s no good for them and will encourage you to eat them too. Move the whole family into healthier eating, to help prevent obesity, heart disease and diabetes in your kids when they are your age. 9. Fill your cupboards with healthy things you’ve forgotten you love: cherry tomatoes, kiwis, mangoes, berries…… Vicky Hitchens - Owner of Fun and Fit Exercise Classes & Guaranteed Results Bootcamp in Basildon, Benfleet, Billericay, Chalkwell, Chelmsford,

A Motoring Icon The legendary Camaro is a true motoring icon. The car’s hunched shoulders and bulging wheel arches give the impression that it’s ready to pounce. And with its massively powerful 6.2 litre V8 engine it probably is. The Camaro is a real driver’s car, the kind that needs to be driven hard to experience all it has to offer - and there’s plenty of that! But don’t just take our word for it... book yourself a test drive today.
