Welcome A very warm welcome to the December 2015 edition of the Southend & Westcliff Local Business Guide. As we head into 2016, our article on page 4 gives you some great ideas of how to keep your New Year’s Resolutions. We also have our regular ‘What’s on in Southend & Westcliff’ on pages 22 and 23 where we feature the Horror on Sea Film Festival, a Classical concert, an Entrepreneurs Extravaganza, a charity race night, a children’s fun day at Southchurch Museum and a wedding fayre. In our regular community feature on the Acres Way Kennels, based in Castle Point (pages 10-11), we are pleased that Hank the Spaniel that we featured in our last issue has been successfully rehomed. The 2 other dogs we featured last month are still looking for their Forever Homes so we have featured them again. We also feature a special appeal to raise money and find a home for Preston the Mastiff who recently had to have a leg removed. In our Community section this month we bring you details of an exciting new project from the Orpheus Singers (page 16) and the latest volunteering opportunities in Southend (page 20). In the 1950s, one of Southend’s most popular attractions was Never Never land and our article on pages 24 and 25 shares a brief history of the magical place. As money is often tight after Christmas, we give you some top money saving tips (page26). We also have our regular column from our financial expert Martin Lamb from Joseph R Lamb Financial Advisers (centre pages). IIf you would like to advertise in any of our Guides please contact Ricky on 01375 402546 and with prices starting from as little as £50 it is a really cost effective way of promoting and generating business from your local community.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Chris Miller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Benfleet, Hadleigh, Thundersly and Canvey
Island areas and Chris is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family
of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Chris a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

New Year’s Resolutions If you struggle every year to keep your New Year’s resolutions, here are some ways to make it easier. If you’re planning to give up alcohol why not do it for charity? Give up alcohol and raise money by pledging to stay “dry” for the month of January with Cancer Research’s Dryathlon. Raise funds, clear your head, feel fitter and save money, all whilst helping to save lives. To register visit www.cancerresearchuk.org If 2016 is the year you are finally going to give up smoking, there is lots of help and advice available from the NHS. Studies show that you’re four times more likely to quit with the help of your Local NHS Stop Smoking Service. For the Southend Stop Smoking Service call 01702 212000. For full details of the help provided by the NHS visit www.nhs.uk/smokefree
There’s more help available from the NHS if you are determined to lose weight in 2016. To find all kinds of support visit www.nhs.uk/livewell/loseweight. The site includes articles, videos and tools from the NHS on more than 100 topics. There is a downloadable 12 week weight loss plan packed full of diet, healthy eating and physical activity advice, including weekly challenges.
New Year’s resolutions need not be health based! Why not commit to giving some of your time to charity by volunteering at a local organisation. There are plenty of opportunities in the local area and the Southend Association of Voluntary Services provides a service matching indivuals to volunteering opportunities. For more details visit www.savs-southend.org or call 01702 356000.

Can you help Re-Home a Dog from Acres Way Kennels? Adopting a Dog
I
f you think you can offer a dog a good home, the first thing you need to do is to go down to the kennels, select a suitable dog you like, take it for a walk and see how you get on. Some people and dogs just don’t get along, so before reserving a dog, the Acres Way staff would need to see if you suit each other. If you have children, or another dog, they recommend that you bring them with you, to make sure that everyone will get on. Once you have visited the dogs, and hopefully found one that matches your lifestyle and expectations, a member of staff will arrange a convenient time for a home check. These are usually carried out within 2
Little Mo - Terrier Female / Age 6
or 3 days of your visit and take about half an hour. Once the home check is complete, you’ll be able to collect your dog. You will need to bring with you some identification showing your current address, and the £130 adoption fee. Their staff will be on hand if you have any questions, and will be able to guide you through the adoption process. All the staff and dogs at Acres Way look forward to seeing you Re-Homing Update We are pleased that Hank the 8 year old Spaniel that we featured in our last issue has been successfully re-homed. Unfortunately Little Mo the terrier and Abbie the Staff are still yet to find loving homes.
Little Mo is a great character! She has plenty of life and loves her walks. She is good with most other dogs but she likes to them to know she’s in charge!
q
Abbie - Staff
Female / Age 18 months Abbie is young, lively and will need some training but she is quick to learn. Needs a home with older children and someone willing to put the training in. 10

Special Appeal Preston the Mastiff Acres Way Kennels is currently running a special appeal to raise funds for a very special dog that they currently have in their care. Preston is a 3 year old Mastiff who unfortunately broke one of his legs. He had numerous oprations but sadly had to have the leg removed. This has cost the kennels over £1000 so a special appeal has been launched to raise money to recover the cost of the operation and to help further in Preston’s rehabilitation. Acres Way are also looking to find Preston a loving home. He loves lots of attention and cuddles and is looking for a relaxed home with lots of people but preferably no other dogs. Donations towards Preston’s operation and continuing care can be via cheque, cash or card at the kennels, or by PayPal at contact@acresway.co.uk. How else can you help? It takes thousands of pounds every week to keep the kennels running, without counting in unexpected veterinary fees such as Preston’s operation. Acres Way have set up a “Wish List” at www.amazon.co.uk of things they need to help continue caring for the dogs. If you feel you can donate, please take a look at their wish list and you can help by buying food, treats and bedding for the amazing rescue dogs.
How to contact Acres Way Acres Way Kennels, Great Burches Road Thundersley, Essex SS7 3NE They are open 10am-3pm 7 days a week. Visitors are welcome at any time during these hours - no appointment is necessary.

Money Guidance W
here can you invest for a decent return?
Whilst it is impossible to give specific advice to someone without setting out their objectives and their appetite for investment risk, we are seeing that most people are now aware that they need to take some risk to get any return at all. We do not believe that rates will rise substantially for many years so cash deposits, Cash ISAs and government savings vehicles are going to carry on delivering next to nothing for a while to come, so a huge number of people have turned to direct investment in property. This has driven up property prices too high and the Government is keen on reining in this price growth, to make the property market more sustainable and accessible for those needing to buy an affordable house to live in. The changes include the removal of higher rate tax relief on mortgage interest, stamp duty for investment properties will be rising significantly from April, Capital Gains Tax on property sales will have to be reported within 30 days from 2019, and worryingly, there is a huge increase in supply of investible property coming through at the same time - just look at the thousands of flats being built in the area. The long term issues associated with investing in property are still there of course, potential of unpaid rents, property management issues, repairs and maintenance. These could have more of an impact if returns do become lower and all need careful consideration. It is likely that the returns from residential property will therefore slow dramatically over the next few years. So, to go back to the burning question at the top, if it’s not ‘cash’ or residential property, what should you invest in? We are concerned that too many people place too much reliance on property and prices will not keep rising for ever. Property has it’s place, but it should form part of a diversified portfolio. At Joseph Lamb we have been running an investment service for 11 years that has delivered consistent returns by diversifying across a range of investment types. We invest in stocks and shares when we feel risk levels are not too high in the UK or in overseas markets when appropriate. We blend this investment with traditional cash, commercial property ( which appears to be a good couple of years behind residential and still showing strong potential), and government or corporate bonds.
14
Our portfolios come in 6 risk levels, from Low to very High, so most people can be catered for, and have delivered excellent returns, ranging from 3.93% to 8.07% per annum after all costs and charges, since launch in October 2004. This is without any of the hassle of being a landlord. Furthermore these are liquid investments, if you need to dip in to them at any time, you can. With property it is not possible to sell part of it and selling a whole property can take many months and cost thousands of pounds. Despite all the recent doom and gloom and uncertainty, we have still delivered 5.32% for our Medium Risk Portfolio after ongoing charges over the last year, and with low energy prices, low commodity prices, low wages (as they haven’t really risen since the crisis), and very cheap borrowing becoming more widely available, we believe the prospects for investing in a diversified portfolio look as good as ever. We can even save you some tax by using tax wrappers such as ISAS and pensions. Whilst investment ISAs are not deposits and like all investments will go up and down in value, just compare the long term returns with your cash ISAs! As well as excellent management of your portfolio we provide a full service that involves regular updates, investment alerts, news and views, unlimited access to our advice team and tax planning within the investments, for a very competitive all-inclusive price that is less than many other investment services that do not provide the communications and on-going advice that we provide. So if you have any concerns about where to find that potential investment return, drop the advice team an email at info@josephlamb.co.uk or call us on 01268 749880.
Martin Lamb, Dip.PFS Certs CII (MP & ER) This information does not constitute an offer or advice and the service described may not be suitable for everyone. Alternative services may be offered if more suitable. Investments can go down as well as up and you could get back less than you paid in. Past Performance is not a guide to future returns. The “from launch” performance figures are from 29th October 2004 to 16th December 2015, and assume a £100,000 investment subject to our initial and ongoing charges for this level of investment. The performance figure for the last year is taken from 16th December 2014 to 16th December 2015. Assuming investment in our unit trust/OEIC portfolios, the returns from our ISAs and pension portfolios are higher.

Southend Community News Sing Together - 50 Women Wanted! H
ave you ever wondered what it would be like to sing in a choir?
The Orpheus Singers are on the verge of an exciting new project entitled Sing Together. The Sing Together Project is about getting 50 or so women together from scratch in January to sing at a charity concert at Westcliff High School for Boys in April 2016. The concert will be raising money for Southend Hospital’s Keyhole Cancer Appeal.
director, David, is very experienced at leading singers who have never sung before and/or who can’t read music. For more a full information pack phone: 07518 382390 or 07519 751282. For more information visit: www.theorpheussingers.co.uk
Who is it for? Put quite simply - Women who: • have always wondered what it’s like to sing • think they can’t sing and are willing to get a nice surprise • are looking for a new way to unwind from the stresses of daily life (music is good for that, and singers don’t have to buy an instrument!) • want a group activity • have not sung for a long time and want to see if they still enjoy it • already sing elsewhere and want to broaden their experience • want to get out of the house more But I have never sung – can I come? A resounding “Yes”. The Orpheus Singers are geared up to helping people “discover their voice”. Their musical

I
f you are looking to do some volutary work in the local area this year, the Southend Association of Voluntary Services has a whole host of opportunities available. Here are just a few of their current opportunities. Would you like a cuppa? If you’re a compassionate person who likes meeting people, could you spare a couple of hours a month on a Tuesday afternoon to help out a local dementia café. It’s a welcoming place giving people with dementia and their carers a chance to relax, enjoy a cuppa and a chat. If you can help with the refreshments, tidying up, join in the activities and, most importantly, just talk, it would make a big difference to the people who come along.

From showing people how to contact family and friends to online applications and CV writing, you’ll open a world of opportunities. You’ll need to be very patient but it’s hugely rewarding and will look great on your CV. For more information of these volunteering opportunties and many others in the local area, contact the Southend Assoctiation of Voluntary Services at: SAVS Centre, 29-31 Alexandra Street, Southend-onSea, Essex, SS1 1BW or call 01702 356000. Southend & Westcliff History Never Never Land
In the 1950s, in the Shrubbery beside the pier, there was a magical exciting place called Never Never Land. It was full of castles and giants and fairylights and a wonderful model railway with stations and mountains and bridges. For most of the year, the area known as “The Shrubbery” was a peaceful park with a stream, waterfalls and seats for people to sit and relax but every summer season things would change and the rest and relaxation would be replaced by shrieks of fun and laughter as a little bit of magic would turn the park in to a whole new attraction. Never Never Land opened in 1935 and soon became popular. By the 1950s people queued along the seafront for hours to get in. The
magical world was owned and operated by Southend Council and would open for just a short part of the summer season. The park was transformed in just a few short weeks to include model cartoon characters, goblins, smoke breathing dragons, fairies with magical castles, thousands of multicoloured lights and a model railways running throughout the park. One of the trains pulled three carriages a First Class, a Second Class and No Class! But, as tastes changed and more ‘exciting’ attractions became available the crowds disappeared and in 1972 the gardens closed. Most of the exhibits were ripped out and the gardens returned to ordinary use with just a few almost indestructible miniature ruins left in the bushes. In 1976, a rival attraction picked up on the same theme and just down the road Peter Pan’s Playground opened complete with a boating lake and fairground attractions. Second Chance The site at The Shrubbery remained as an open public space for 15 years until in 1987. With visitor numbers to Southend rising the council looked at re-opening the site as a world of enchantment and so Never Never Land was

re-born. The new look Never Never Land cost £250,000 to install. The new attraction saw a number of castles built, an enchanted forest introduced and model figures including Carlton Cat, Bruce Bear, Cyril Squirrel & Moxy Mouse placed around the park. The castles could hold around 20 people at a time and behind a glass panel were models depicting well known nursery rhymes whilst a holographic face was beamed onto a white bust telling the story of the scenes to spectators. On the opening day queues formed for almost a mile along the sea front to see the re-launched park. The initial visitor numbers were high for the first three years but they began to tail off in 1990 prompting the council to lease the park out to a private operator whilst retaining ownership of the land. However, Never Never Land never really re-gained the same popularity as it had in the 1950s and, due to increasing costs and vandalism to the displays, it closed its doors in January 2001.
This model castle was at the entrance and it had lights in the windows and a little rowing boat crossing the lake at the bottom.
Meanwhile the rival Peter Pan park changed into Peter Pan’s Adventure Island, and then recognising the diminishing allure of pirates and fairies to the current generation of young people, simply Adventure Island. It now claims to be the country’s No.1 free admission amusement park and is full of rollercoasters as well as more sedate rides and attractions. Boating Lake at Peter Pan’s Playgound

Top Money Saving Tips Stop buying big brands! Most shops own brand items are made by the same people, just packaged differently and priced better. So why pay for the privilege of eating well known branded foods when an own brand tastes the same!
Watch the pennies! If you keep a record of every single penny you spend for at least one month; you’ll learn a lot and then later save the money you realized you wasted!
Haggling! You’d be surprised at the number of places you can haggle prices. From furniture stores to car dealerships to your local electrical store, by being friendly and just by asking you can get the price down on almost anything. If you don’t ask – you don’t get!
Switch off the plugs! A standard CRT television set still uses 2 watts of power on standby, with LCD and plasma screens using even more. According to the Energy Saving Trust, switching stuff off instead of leaving it on standby saves the average household at least £37 a year; it’s also helping out the environment!
Shop at cheaper places! Instead of buying higher priced products in premium supermarkets, make a visit to the less fashionable supermarkets. Your shopping experience might be a little lacklustre but it’ll be worth it when you see how much less you’re paying at the checkout. Stay organized! Computers are used by companies to save money. If you have a computer or laptop at home, use it in the same way. Use a spreadsheet to help with your budgeting. Keep your bank balance on it this will help you to stay organized and you can also use it so that you do not forget important dates. Interest! There is no such thing as 0% interest. When you see that advertised, it simply means that the cost of the interest is in the purchase price. If you are in a position to pay cash, then ask for this money back. The salesman may give you some trouble, but ask to speak to the manager, who may well cut the price to you for cash.
26
Walk! One of the biggest money saving tips: walk don’t drive. If you need to get a paper at the shops, go on foot. It might not be practical if you’re off to do the weekly shop but by not driving your helping the environment by cutting carbon emissions, saving money and losing weight by walking everywhere! Layers in the winter! When it gets cold put on an extra layer instead of turning up the thermostat. There’s no point having the house heated and wasting money on electricity bills when putting on a cosy knitted sweater will do the job just as well! Online comparison sites! It might be annoying and feel like a waste of time, but checking the price of your household services, credit cards and loans with comparison sites like moneysupermarket.com could save you a lot of money; just take some time out to get organised!
