Welcome A very warm welcome to the February 2015 edition of the Southend & Westcliff Local Business Guide. The Essex Book Festival will be running throughout March and our article on page 4 gives you some ideas of where to meet some of our talented local authors. We also have our regular ‘What’s on in Southend & Westcliff’ on pages 22 and 23 where we feature the SX Spectacular concert, a nearly new sale, a Folk & Ale Festival, a nautical night of sea shanties, a wedding fayre and a local year round Car Boot Sale. In our regular community feature on the Acres Way Kennels, based in Castle Point (pages 10-11), we are pleased that Theo the Boxer, Misty the Blue Staff and Billy the Lurcher that we featured in our last issue have been successfully re-homed. We have 3 new dogs that are all looking for new loving homes. We also have local community articles about the history of The Kursaal (page 16), local charity ‘Harp’ that provides valuable services to the homeless in the Southend area (page 24) and Southend Hospital Radio (page 26). We also have our regular column from our financial expert Martin Lamb from Joseph R Lamb Financial Advisers (centre pages). If you have any interesting stories about Southend or Westcliff or if you are a local team, association or charity that would like to be featured in any future editions of the Local Business Guide then please drop us a line at: info@thelocalbusinessguide.co.uk

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Chris Miller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Benfleet, Hadleigh, Thundersly and Canvey
Island areas and Chris is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family
of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Chris a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Essex Book Festival This year’s Essex Book Festival in March has some great opportunities to meet local authors. 2nd March at The Forum, Elmer Square, Southend 7pm - 9pm: Professor Pamela Cox will be discussing her book ‘Shopgirls: The True Story of Life Behind The Counter.’ The book shares true stories of some of the unsung heroines behind the counters of Britain’s stores - from the world of Mr Selfridge to the world of Mr Sainsbury.
15th March at The Royal Pavilion, Southend Pier - 10.30am - 11.30am: Meet author Jane Dolby from Leigh On Sea whose book ‘Song of the Sea’ is the story of her journey through love and loss to find her voice with The Fishwives Choir, uniting fishing communities across the UK. Jane founded the Choir, which is made up of women involved in the fishing community, after the tragic loss of her husband Colin at sea. 26th March at Rayleigh Library, 4 High St, Rayleigh 7.00pm - 9.00pm: Derek Wilson is an historian and expert on the Tudor period, who has published acclaimed non-fiction books on Tudor England and Henry VIII. He will be discussing ‘The Traitor’s Mark’ the second book in his compelling new fiction series based on real unsolved Tudor crimes, investigated by the fictional protagonist Thomas Treviot.
There is a rich diversity of literary talent in our area and a Local Authors Day will be held on 28th March at The Forum, Elmer Square, Southend between 10.00am and 4.00pm. Ann Duggans-Robson will introduce local authors to the public and signal the start of the children’s book and museum trail around Southend. The Forum will be the host venue for the day, and authors will be available for a chat and to sign books personally. 4

Can you help Re-Home a Dog from Acres Way Kennels? Adopting a Dog
I
f you think you can offer a dog a good home, the first thing you need to do is to go down to the kennels, select a suitable dog you like, take it for a walk and see how you get on. Some people and dogs just don’t get along, so before reserving a dog, the Acres Way staff would need to see if you suit each other. If you have children, or another dog, they recommend that you bring them with you, to make sure that everyone will get on. Once you have visited the dogs, and hopefully found one that matches your lifestyle and expectations, a member of staff will arrange a convenient time for a home check. These are usually carried out within 2 or 3 days of your visit and take about half an hour. Once the
home check is complete, you’ll be able to collect your dog. You will need to bring with you some identification showing your current address, and the £130 adoption fee. Their staff will be on hand if you have any questions, and will be able to guide you through the adoption process. All the staff and dogs at Acres Way look forward to seeing you Re-Homing Update We are pleased that Theo the Boxer, Misty the Blue Staff and Billy the Lurcher that we featured in our last issue have been successfully re-homed. They are settling well into their new families.

Money Guidance New Pension Rules T
he incredible new rules have now been confirmed and have turned pensions into the most flexible & tax efficient savings plans, given that your contributions to a pension receive tax relief and then grow virtually tax free over the years. There is now no limit on the amount you can take from your pension (currently from age 55). If you wish to enjoy it over the early years of retirement that will be your choice. If you would rather invest it to make a sustainable income, or any combination of income and lump sum withdrawals then again, the choice is yours. There are two new ways to facilitate this:
Flexi Access Drawdown This allows you to take up to 25% tax free lump sum, the balance of your pension fund is then invested in a Flexi Access Drawdown. From the invested fund you are free to take withdrawals of any amount at any time. This could be as regular monthly payments to meet your living expenses or one off withdrawals to fund things like holidays or new cars, but beware anything above the 25% will be taxed as income, so any ideas you have about ‘spending’ your pension fund should be very carefully considered. The media have been talking about withdrawing your fund to buy rental property. This makes little sense to us - why would you move a now highly ‘liquid’ tax exempt fund into a very ‘illiquid’ taxable asset?
Uncrystallised Funds Pension Lump Sum (UFPLS) This options allows a lump sum of any amount to be taken from uncrystallised funds (funds from which benefits have not yet been taken) , and leaves the remaining funds invested and in the pension. 14
These lump sums are paid as 25% tax free/75% taxed as income. For those not requiring their tax free lump sum upfront, this is likely to be the most tax efficient method of receiving retirement income – 25% less income tax than would otherwise be the case.
Death Benefits The new rules provide unparalleled opportunity to pass on wealth, free of tax. Previously once ‘crystallised’ the only way your fund could pass to someone other than your spouse was after a 55% tax charge. It is now possible to pass your pension fund on death without tax. If you die before 75 your beneficiaries will pay no tax at all, after 75 the fund is tax free but any withdrawals your beneficiaries make are taxed as income at their rate of tax. All the old objections to pensions have been swept away. You must consider maximising contributions to pensions during your working life. The tax efficiencies are enormous. Equally you must get advice on the best way to withdraw your pension or it will be too easy to run out of money or pay far too much tax in retirement. As experienced and qualified pension and retirement advisers we would of course be happy to help.

Southend History - The Kursaal T
he Kursaal was the largest amusement park in the south throughout much of the twentieth century. The venue was opened in 1894 by father and son Alfred and Bernard Wiltshire Tollhurst, on four acres of land purchased the previous year, as the ‘Marine Park and Gardens’. In 1901, they opened a grand entrance pavilion with a great silver dome over the entrance called the Kursaal. It was designed by Campbell Sherrin and contained a circus, ballroom, arcade, dining hall and billiard room. The word Kursaal is German, meaning a “Cure Hall” or spa, and it seems to have been adapted to mean a place of healthy amusement. The First Ever...
wall. The first riders were husband and wife Billy and Marjorie Ward.
The Kursaal was the world’s first ever theme park, pre-dating Coney Island in America. There were also other firsts at the Kursaal including the world’s first Lady Lion Tamer and the world’s first Lady Wall of death Rider performed here. It was also the first venue in England for the display of Al Capone’s personal car from Chicago, and Eric the sixty ton stuffed whale!
With Southend being the nearest seaside resort to London, The Kursaal remained a major destination, especially for day-trippers and works outings from the East End of London until the 1960s. There were several annual events for which the Kursaal was famous, including the New Year’s Eve Ball, the Charity Dinner for Deprived Children and the Old People’s Dinner.
From the world’s heaviest man Dick Harrow to the Sacco the fasting man, the Kursaal’s variety of entertainments was renowned. This was complemented by rides including The Cyclone, Water chute, Caterpillar ride and the Wall of Death.
The Kursaal declined in the early 1970s, with the outdoor amusements closing in 1973 and the main building finally succumbing to closure in 1986. Although the outdoor amusements were redeveloped for housing, the main Kursaal building reopened in 1998, after a multimillion pound redevelopment, containing a bowling alley and other amusements. It is now a listed building. forming part of the Kursaal conservation area.
Wall of Death The Kursaal featured Britain’s first Wall of Death in June 1929. It featured motorcycles on a 20 foot wooden 16

Local Charity - Harp H
ARP is an independent Southend based charity that reduces homelessness by providing essential services, emergency housing and long term solutions. This enables people to rebuild their lives and live independently in the community. HARP exists because they received 12,000 visits across their services in 2013 from people who needed assistance with homeless issues. 22% of this number were young people aged between 16 and 25. 25% were female. HARP helped all of them. Many needed to find a safe place for the night to avoid sleeping rough on the streets. HARP currently has the capacity to house up to 100 people at any one time - this is either in the emergency night shelter, one of their three hostels, a bedsit or flat. The Bradbury Centre is the first point of contact for anyone who finds themselves homeless or at risk of being homeless in Southend. Staff at The Bradbury
24
Centre offer advice and support, provide a hot meal and help find emergency accommodation HARP’s volunteers are crucial to keeping the charity afloat. They have approximately 60 volunteers across their sites including their charity retail shops in London Road and Hamlet Court Road (both in Westcliff), and their kitchens. All food donated to HARP is used in food parcels, night packs and for meals at The Bradbury Centre and their other specialist hostels. If you would like to become a volunteer contact Tony Dunn by email at tony.dunn@harpsouthend.org.uk If you are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless please call 01702 430696. For general enquiries including fundraising please call 01702 615000. For more information on the services provided please visit www.harpsouthend.org

Local Community Southend Hospital Radio Wonder, a request from the then Sister of Balmoral Ward at Rochford Hospital. May 1977 saw the first of many outside broadcasts covering the Milk Race along Southend seafront. Other events covered in the first year included Southend Carnival, Leigh Regatta, It’s A Knockout and Princess Margaret’s visit in June 1977.
S
outhend Hospital Radio is the radio service for Southend University Hospital and has been broadcasting for over 35 years. It aims to relieve the effects of sickness, infirmity and old age by providing a local broadcasting service to patients. The radio station was launched in February 1977, after the then Mayor, Councillor Neville Moss, made fundraising for a radio service at the hospital, the mayoral charity appeal during his term of office in 1976. The idea of a Hospital Radio service came from a former patient and founder hospital radio member, Betti Thompson. Betti’s husband Mike went on to broadcast the first programme on the station. The first record played was ‘Isn’t She Lovely’ by Stevie
26
Today, the station broadcasts every evening from 6pm with the main show being the two-hour Request Show which starts at 8pm. Patients can listen free from the bedside Premiere system. Shows cover a range of different types and style of music, interviews and chat. They also provide a 24 hour “easy listening” music channel and a Saturday Sports Show includes live commentary of Southend United F.C home matches. Southend Hospital Radio Service is funded totally by donations from the general public, private companies and the dedicated fundraising activities of its members.
