Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Chris Miller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Benfleet, Hadleigh, Thundersly and Canvey

Island areas and Chris is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Chris a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Can you help Re-Home a Dog from Acres Way Kennels? Adopting a Dog

I

f you think you can offer a dog a good home, the first thing you need to do is to go down to the kennels, select a suitable dog you like, take it for a walk and see how you get on. Some people and dogs just don’t get along, so before reserving a dog, the Acres Way staff would need to see if you suit each other. If you have children, or another dog, they recommend that you bring them with you, to make sure that everyone will get on. Once you have visited the dogs, and hopefully found one that matches your lifestyle and expectations, a member of staff will arrange a convenient time for a home check. These are usually carried out within 2

or 3 days of your visit and take about half an hour. Once the home check is complete, you’ll be able to collect your dog. You will need to bring with you some identification showing your current address, and the £130 adoption fee. Their staff will be on hand if you have any questions, and will be able to guide you through the adoption process. All the staff and dogs at Acres Way look forward to seeing you Re-Homing Update Dizzy and Roxy who we featured last month are unfortunately still at Acres Way. Blaze the Husky who we also featured last month has been taken into a Husky rescue centre to help him better his chances of getting a home and get the specific care that the breed requires.

Money Guidance

W

hat do we actually do at Joseph Lamb’s....? It is very easy for us to forget but what we think ‘Financial Advice’ is not always not what you may think it is! The Financial Advice industry has grown out of what used to be the life assurance and insurance broking industry, but is now a very different animal indeed. Whilst everyone in it moans about the level of regulation and complying with regulation, there is no doubt at all that higher and higher levels of regulation have led to higher and higher levels of professionalism. At Lamb’s we recognised the impact this regulation would have on us right from the earliest days, so we stopped doing ‘general insurance’ as long ago as 1987, and subsequently have simplified our business model to focus on our core specialist activities. These are now very different from the past, our business has developed into an Investment and much as I hate the phrase ‘Wealth Management’ business. We run our own investment portfolios under our Discretionary Premier Investment Monitoring Service (D-PIMS) which can apply to all aspects of your personal wealth as it can operate for your investment ISAs, pensions, unit trust portfolios and even via Life Assurance Bonds where their special tax treatment may be advantageous for some clients. We are now in the very proud position of being entrusted with looking after about £250,000,000 of investments on behalf of clients and are the most longstanding and largest firm in our sector in the area. The D-PIMS service operates at 6 levels of ‘risk’ from ‘low’ through to ‘very high’ so we can find a suitable level for just about everybody, and has been operating for nearly 10 years. The performance of the portfolios can be seen on our website where you will see that we have consistently outperformed our peers and competition, often with much lower ‘volatility’, the values don’t jump around as much as our competitors. D-PIMS keeps you up to date with your investments, we can provide on-line valuations, formal 6 monthly reports and market commentaries via e mail from our investment team as and when we make changes to our portfolios. We think that this makes our clients feel much more ‘engaged’ with their money than any other service previously experienced and we find clients become much more interested in and aware of the world’s investment markets.

14

In running the portfolios we look forward over the coming months and try to position our investments in line with what we feel are the most likely outcomes of economic and political events. We reduce risk in our portfolios if we foresee potential risk events, and this is what helps control the volatility of the service. We are always looking for areas that may provide better returns, and have an excellent track record of introducing or increasing investments in sectors just ahead of their performance increasing, a good example of this is bringing Commercial Property funds into the portfolios a full year ahead of our competitors, at the start of what appears to be a strong run for the sector. As well as running your investments for you we can provide full advice around the financial planning issues relating to your retirement, accessing your pensions, funding pensions, (which the ‘New Rules’ have made infinitely more attractive),saving, protecting your family and your business, cash flow planning, Trustee Investment services, and from our experience in running our own business, we can often help out with business planning and corporate decision making. Our adviser team has hundreds of years experience across all market and economic cycles, why not contact one of them to pick their brains and get some financial planning ideas? The first consultation is always free and we are confident that we can add value and improve your current situation - our existing clients certainly think so as can be seen from the testimonials on our website. So, why not find out what we do - free of charge and contact us with any financial planning query you may have. We will do all we can to help, free of charge until we commence chargeable work for you.

Martin Lamb, Dip.PFS Certs CII (MP & ER) We will notify you before we begin any chargeable work and provide an estimate fo costs. History of Rossi’s Icecream P

ietro and Luisa Rossi moved from Consett, County Durham to Southend in 1932 to start an Ice Cream Business with a local family, also called Rossi. They started trading at 1 Marine Parade, 37 High Street and Western Esplanade. The partnership was dissolved in 1937 and Pietro Rossi kept Marine Parade and Western Esplanade together with a small kiosk along Westcliff Seafront. Their eldest daughters, Gemma and Maria, helped in the business whilst their youngest daughter, Lolanda, and only son, Tony, attended the Sacred Heart School, Southchurch. Lolanda then attended St. Bernards School until the outbreak of war and Tony was sent to a boarding school in Italy. The War Years The family manufactured ice cream from Marine Parade until 1939 at which time they had to vacate their premises as the seafront area was closed for military purposes. Luisa and her two youngest children spent the war years in Italy, whilst Pietro and Maria remained in England, Gemma having married in 1937 to an ice cream businessman in Portsmouth. Pietro Rossi was interned as an alien on the Isle of Wight and Maria worked as a waitress to support her father. The end of the war saw the family re-united in 1946

and they resumed their business interests in Southend, selling ice cream from Marine Parade and their two sites along Western Esplanade. The 1950s and 1960s saw the business flourish and to cope with demand, built an ice cream factory in Lucy Road, Southend in 1967. Luisa died in 1957 and Pietro died in 1968, their children having taken over the reins some years earlier. Rossi Ice Cream had now become a favourite with locals and visitors. Their Western Esplanade premises was a local landmark and attracted thousands of visitors every year. In 1969 they aquired a kiosk at the top end of Southend High Street, which proved to be a very busy site in the Summer months and demand was always high for their traditional vanilla ice cream served from stainless steel barrels using the ‘spoon’ to serve on the cone. Maria Rossi, by then Maria Fantauzzi was invited onto The Generation Game in 1983 to demonstrate this method of serving ice cream. Following the deaths of Maria, Lolanda and Tony, Lolanda’s widower Reg Dimascio sold the factory and kiosk and leased out the Marine Parade shop in January 2006. Source: www.rossiicecream.com
