Can you help Re-Home a Dog from Acres Way Kennels? Adopting a Dog
I
f you think you can offer a dog a good home, the first thing you need to do is to go down to the kennels, select a suitable dog you like, take it for a walk and see how you get on. Some people and dogs just don’t get along, so before reserving a dog, the Acres Way staff would need to see if you suit each other. If you have children, or another dog, they recommend that you bring them with you, to make sure that everyone will get on. Once you have visited the dogs, and hopefully found one that matches your lifestyle and expectations, a member of staff will arrange a convenient time for a home check. These are usually carried out within 2
or 3 days of your visit and take about half an hour. Once the home check is complete, you’ll be able to collect your dog. You will need to bring with you some identification showing your current address, and the £130 adoption fee. Their staff will be on hand if you have any questions, and will be able to guide you through the adoption process. All the staff and dogs at Acres Way look forward to seeing you Re-Homing Update Dizzy and Roxy who we featured last month are unfortunately still at Acres Way. Blaze the Husky who we also featured last month has been taken into a Husky rescue centre to help him better his chances of getting a home and get the specific care that the breed requires.

Money Guidance
A
nti Pension? I am sure many people are as the media have had very little of any good to say about the subject for a decade or more. Well times have changed- the Budget has dramatically shaken up the world of pensions- and for the better. Although the new rules are not finalised and will not be effective until April 2015, they will deal with the most common objections relating to pensions. The most frequent objection I hear is ‘my pension will die with me’, the second is ‘ At current annuity rates I will have to live for 20 years just to get my own money back’. Traditionally most people have accessed their pension funds by buying an Annuity at retirement. In doing so you effectively swap your fund for the promise of a guaranteed lifetime income. This income is loosely linked to interest rates and life expectancy, and as rates are at historical lows, and life expectancy has increased, the pension will need to be paid for longer. As such Annuity rates have been at all-time lows, and indeed it would take twenty years or more for many of us to see the value of our pension returned as income. Whilst there have always been annuity options available to pass your Annuity onto your wife , and in some limited cases, other beneficiaries, these are not always selected as they reduce the Annuity rate even further. It goes without saying that Annuities have therefore become very poor value over recent years – but it has always been an HMRC requirement that you HAD to use your pension fund to buy an Annuity or alternative form of income plan at retirement. The budget has effectively thrown this requirement away- from April 2015 you will be able to draw as little or as much money from your pension plan, as and when you need it from the age of 55. If you want to draw down higher amounts over fewer years to enjoy it whilst you are still fit and young enough to then that will be your choice. You can also limit the amount of interest accruing by setting your Lifetime Mortgage up as a facility, drawing down portions of the agreed loan only as you need them. An example may be that you could borrow £50,000 but only draw down £15,000 to improve your home, you will only be charged interest on the £15,000 with a further £35,000 in reserve to draw down at some point in the future. You retain the right to live in your property and the products we recommend mean that you can never owe more than the property value. Any fund left on your death can be transferred to your spouse, and any left on their death can be transferred to your family, albeit it is then subject to a tax charge which is currently under review. Irrespective of the charge it is better to leave your family a taxed fund than no fund at all!
14
I have seen many newspaper articles encouraging people to draw down their entire pension fund, or to take it out and move it to a ‘cheaper’ investment plan. Beware- very few of these articles mentioned that income tax will be payable on withdrawals. If you were to access your whole fund, on top of any other income, you could be paying 45% income tax! It makes no sense to move it out of the pension, pay tax , and then go and put the capital in a taxable investment- please consider any such ideas very carefully- and seek advice before doing anything! So if you have control over the level of income in retirement, and your fund can be left for others – why wouldn’t we all put our money into pensions? This still needs consideration for Basic Rate tax payers as investing in ISAs may not give you the benefit of tax relief on the contributions, but income can be taken from ISAs in the future without income tax and you can access it whenever you like. Pensions cannot be accessed until 55. If your employer is paying in as well as yourself ten that clearly tips the balance towards pensions, and non-tax payers (housewives and children) can have £3600 pa paid into pensions and still get the tax relief! If you are paying higher rate tax then pension funding is now a ‘must do’. The tax reliefs granted boost your pension fund from outset at levels that simply cannot be obtained from any other form of investment, other than high risk specialist investment tax shelter schemes. Joseph Lamb are the area’s leading point of retirement specialists. We help hundreds of people plan and manage their retirement every year and have been successfully managing ‘ Income Drawdown’ accounts for nearly two decades. Advice will be needed to determine the most suitable plans and underlying investments , and to help manage a sustainable income from your pension plans. If you are retiring soon we would be happy to assist you, and if you are still years away from retiring- start saving now! There has never been a more favourable environment to encourage you to save for retirement- and believe me- 55 will be upon you before you know it! Martin Lamb, Dip.PFS Certs CII (MP & ER) This article is not intended to provide advice, nor does it imply that ant Equity Release service or product is suitable for you. Always seek independent legal and financial advice and check carefully the terms and conditions of any product if you want your family or others to inherit the full value of your home. Lifetime Mortgages are secured against the value of your home, Home Reversions involve an actual sale of part of the value of your home.

History of Rossi’s Icecream P
ietro and Luisa Rossi moved from Consett, County Durham to Southend in 1932 to start an Ice Cream Business with a local family, also called Rossi. They started trading at 1 Marine Parade, 37 High Street and Western Esplanade. The partnership was dissolved in 1937 and Pietro Rossi kept Marine Parade and Western Esplanade together with a small kiosk along Westcliff Seafront. Their eldest daughters, Gemma and Maria, helped in the business whilst their youngest daughter, Lolanda, and only son, Tony, attended the Sacred Heart School, Southchurch. Lolanda then attended St. Bernards School until the outbreak of war and Tony was sent to a boarding school in Italy. The War Years The family manufactured ice cream from Marine Parade until 1939 at which time they had to vacate their premises as the seafront area was closed for military purposes. Luisa and her two youngest children spent the war years in Italy, whilst Pietro and Maria remained in England, Gemma having married in 1937 to an ice cream businessman in Portsmouth. Pietro Rossi was interned as an alien on the Isle of Wight and Maria worked as a waitress to support her father. The end of the war saw the family re-united in 1946
and they resumed their business interests in Southend, selling ice cream from Marine Parade and their two sites along Western Esplanade. The 1950s and 1960s saw the business flourish and to cope with demand, built an ice cream factory in Lucy Road, Southend in 1967. Luisa died in 1957 and Pietro died in 1968, their children having taken over the reins some years earlier. Rossi Ice Cream had now become a favourite with locals and visitors. Their Western Esplanade premises was a local landmark and attracted thousands of visitors every year. In 1969 they aquired a kiosk at the top end of Southend High Street, which proved to be a very busy site in the Summer months and demand was always high for their traditional vanilla ice cream served from stainless steel barrels using the ‘spoon’ to serve on the cone. Maria Rossi, by then Maria Fantauzzi was invited onto The Generation Game in 1983 to demonstrate this method of serving ice cream. Following the deaths of Maria, Lolanda and Tony, Lolanda’s widower Reg Dimascio sold the factory and kiosk and leased out the Marine Parade shop in January 2006. Source: www.rossiicecream.com
