Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Chris Miller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Benfleet, Hadleigh, Thundersly and Canvey
Island areas and Chris is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family
of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Chris a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Can you help Re-Home a Dog from Acres Way Kennels? Adopting a Dog
I
f you think you can offer a dog a good home, the first thing you need to do is to go down to the kennels, select a suitable dog you like, take it for a walk and see how you get on. Some people and dogs just don’t get along, so before reserving a dog, the Acres Way staff would need to see if you suit each other. If you have children, or another dog, they recommend that you bring them with you, to make sure that everyone will get on. Once you have visited the dogs, and hopefully found one that matches your lifestyle and expectations, a member of staff will arrange a convenient time for a home check. These are usually carried out within 2
or 3 days of your visit and take about half an hour. Once the home check is complete, you’ll be able to collect your dog. You will need to bring with you some identification showing your current address, and the £130 adoption fee. Their staff will be on hand if you have any questions, and will be able to guide you through the adoption process. All the staff and dogs at Acres Way look forward to seeing you Re-Homing Update We are thrilled that Wobbles the Schitzu (below) that we featured in our June issue has found a loving family. Unfortunately none of the dogs we featured last month has been re-homed. We are therefore re-featuring these dogs in order to give them the best chance of finding a new home. Fingers crossed !!

Money Guidance H
MRC have announced the final rules following the momentous budget changes announced earlier in the year. These new rules will become effective from April 6th next year, so if you are planning on retiring soon you really need to be aware of them. They give new flexibilities not seen before, that counter many of the anti-pension arguments and in one fell swoop will have made saving for retirement via traditional pension policies rather than Buy to Let or ‘exotic’ schemes, truly interesting again. In fact I wonder whether the Government’s concern over the proliferation of ‘exotic’ (often offshore property) schemes and house price rises caused in part by Buy to Let investors alienating ‘real’ buyers and creating an economic bubble, was not a primary reason behind their thinking in trying to get conventional pension planning back on savers financial radars? The two main causes of concern for savers in pensions have been the low level of income available from annuities due to low interest rates and the idea that pension funds ‘die’ with you. Neither of these have been strictly true for a while, but by the Government making pensions more flexible more and more people are now thinking positively about saving for retirement again. With auto enrolment in the workplace now happening, we all need to have confidence that our pension funds will deliver a real benefit for us and our families. I believe this has been achieved with the new rules, which in a very concise summary are; Tax Free cash remains at 25% of your pension fund from age 55. No requirement for anyone to buy an annuity or conventional income product. Your pension can remain invested until needed, even after obtaining your Tax Free cash. There will be no limits on the amount you take from your pension. If you wish to enjoy it over the early years of retirement that will be your choice. If you would rather invest it to make a sustainable income, or even any combination of income and lump sum withdrawals then again, the choice is yours. If an annuity hasn’t been purchased by the time you die, you can transfer your entire remaining fund tax free to your spouse. Or you can leave the fund to your children subject to a tax charge which is currently
14
under review and expected to reduce. As long as professional advice is sought you can transfer from Defined Benefit or Final Salary schemes in order to benefit from these new flexibilities - this may be especially useful for high earners or those with a limited life expectancy. This option will be removed for Statutory Government schemes such as Local Government, Civil Service etc. Prior to the new rules being introduced in April 2015 small pension funds of less than £30,000 and up to three plans with values less than £10,000 can be accessed entirely with no need to buy any form of ‘income’ product. These can be accessed from age 60. As always there is some complex detail behind these rules, especially around taxation and on-going pension contribution allowances, so before making any steps you should always seek advice from a professional regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. The Government have promised to fund a scheme to provide everyone with ‘guidance’ around these new rules, but we have yet to see what this will look like and how comprehensive it will be. Whilst it is a good idea to make guidance more available, would you rather talk to someone with basic training - or trust your finances for the rest of your life to a qualified professional? I know which I would rather choose! At Joseph Lamb we have been dealing with pensions and retirement for nearly 45 years and have a number of fully qualified pension professionals ready to guide you through the new retirement maze. As always an initial consultation is free and we may be able to simply point you in the right direction, or formulate a plan for your finances for the rest of your retirement, including the most efficient way to provide legacies for your family.

The History of Southend Pier S
outhend Pier is the town’s historical icon as well as being the longest pleasure Pier in the world. It stretches for 1.34 miles, putting Southend on the map as well as into the record books. Since it was built in 1830 the Pier has seen both good and troubled times. With its many changes it has evolved to meet the trends of the passing decades of the 20th and 21st centuries. The present iron Pier was first opened in 1889 but only extended as far as what is now known as the Old Pier Head. The first extension was built in 1898 and is known as the New Pier Head. An upper deck was added and opened in 1908 and further extensions to this area were completed in 1927. The final addition to the length was opened in 1929. The Prince George Extension brought the length to 2158 metres or 1.34 miles, making Southend Pier the longest pleasure Pier in the world.

The Pier Railway The electric tramway was opened in 1890. It had one car of the toast rack type which operated on 0.75 miles of single track. By the following year the track had been extended to the full 1.25 miles and two further cars were added. More cars were added until four trains were operated with seven cars in each. In 1949 the rolling stock was replaced with four new trains similar in design to the London Underground stock. In 1978 the electric railway stopped operating due to the wear and tear of the track and the high cost of repairs. Between 1984 and 1986 the Pier was repaired and a new track laid. Two new trains began running again in 1986 on a single track with a passing

The Southend Pier Museum was opened in 1989. It is located in the the Old Pier Workshops underneath the train station at the shore end of the Pier. To locate the Museum, visitors should go to the Pier Reception and then walk to the right of the railway entrance where the Museum entrance is signposted. Exhibits include many items of memorabilia such as an original restored working pier signal box, a restored ex-pier toastrack tram c.1890 and train carriages c.1949 together with extensive informative pictorial displays featuring the pier from 1830 and period costumes For further information on this iconic landmark please see the Southend-on-Sea Pier museum website at www.southendpiermuseum.co.uk

The Orpheus Singers T
he Orpheus Singers were founded in 2008 and under David Clark’s professional musical direction, the ladies choir continues to develop an impressive repertoire and entertain both locally and nationally. The choir was started by local resident Lynne Ewins. As an active member of several local choirs, Lynne felt there was a real need for a ladies only choir in the area. She approached David Clark, the Musical Director for the Leigh Orpheus male Voice Choir with her idea. David eventually agreed that if Lynne could get together 40 ladies who wanted to sing, he would give her the choir she wanted. So, Lynne and her friend Pauline Sear set about trying to find 40 enthusiastic ladies. Nobody could have predicted the level of interest throughout the area and just 14 weeks after launching the choir had 120 members! The choir performs concerts to suit all occasions with songs from spiritual to folk; pop to classic; rock
20
to ballad; jazz to songs from stage and screen. Through the many concerts held, the choir has been able to support a wide range of local, national and international charities. At the end of May 2014, 45 ladies formed the Choir’s Tour Group to the Isle of Wight. Over the weekend, concerts were performed in the beautiful All Saints’ Church Ryde, the Medina Theatre in Newport and Sunday’s finale was some unaccompanied singing on the terrace at Osborne House in brilliant sunshine. If you would like further details of The Orpheus Singers or to arrange a concert for your charity, or maybe even join in the singing yourself, please contact Choir Secretary, Sue Latchford on telephone 01702 467052. You can find details of their next concert - a remembrance concert on our What’s On page and a full list of concerts on their website at www.theorpheussingers.co.uk

But don’t worry, your beady eyes aren’t deceiving you – it really is an incredibly rare albino specimen. The pearly-white crustacean has just arrived after being caught off the Dorset coast, and will play a leading role in Sea-Life Aquarium’s educational activities at the popular centre on Southend’s Eastern Esplanade, as Senior Aquarist Amelie Brackin explains: “Because he is a rarity – and therefore something of an oddity – his albinism allows us to demonstrate to our visitors the rich diversity and uniqueness of the great many creatures living in our seas. As an educational example, we’ll feature him in our talks about albinism occurs and the effect it can have on a species. Many people assume that lobsters are red as they only see them served on a plate. They’re intrigued when they see their true colour is actually dark blue but are even more fascinated to see a completely white one.” Amelie adds: “Although they are extremely rare, compared to normal lobsters, albinos are not impossible to find – albeit your chances are approximately a million to one. Scientifically speaking, there may be some environmental factor that has increased albinisms in lobsters, or a certain habitat condition that has allowed them to survive longer on the west coast.” Albinism is caused by a lack of melanin in the skin, which means there is a lack of colour pigment. Amelie’s
24
colleague Jennifer Vowles explains that this adds to Sea-Life’s latest acquisition’s relative uniqueness: “I believe that only one or two other albino lobsters have been found around the UK in the last 20 years or so. In the wild, it would be very hard for an albino animal to survive for very long as they are unable to hide and are therefore vulnerable to predators eating them. But other than that, they are the same as a normal lobster.” The lobster has settled well into his new home and staff report that he appears to be feeling all-white. Sea-Life Adventure is the South East’s premier aquatic attraction, featuring over 40 displays and an active conservation programme. Find out more at www.sealifeadventure.co.uk
