Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Chris Miller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Benfleet, Hadleigh, Thundersly and Canvey
Island areas and Chris is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family
of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Chris a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Can you help Re-Home a Dog from Acres Way Kennels? Adopting a Dog
I
f you think you can offer a dog a good home, the first thing you need to do is to go down to the kennels, select a suitable dog you like, take it for a walk and see how you get on. Some people and dogs just don’t get along, so before reserving a dog, the Acres Way staff would need to see if you suit each other. If you have children, or another dog, they recommend that you bring them with you, to make sure that everyone will get on. Once you have visited the dogs, and hopefully found one that matches your lifestyle and expectations, a member of staff will arrange a convenient time for a home check. These are usually carried out within 2 or 3 days of your visit and take about half an hour. Once the
home check is complete, you’ll be able to collect your dog. You will need to bring with you some identification showing your current address, and the £130 adoption fee. Their staff will be on hand if you have any questions, and will be able to guide you through the adoption process. All the staff and dogs at Acres Way look forward to seeing you Re-Homing Update We are pleased that Tonka the French Bulldog/Staff cross that we featured in our last issue has been successfully re-homed. Unfortunately Boycie the Staff and Harry the Chihuahua are still yet to find loving homes.

Money Guidance I
f you do own your own Limited Company and have been paying yourself through dividends the chances are that you are going to be much worse off once next year’s Dividend Tax changes come into effect. At the moment you will pay Corporation Tax on your profits, currently at 20% of your profit. Any profit left after the Corporation tax charge can be paid as a dividend and as you own all or part of the company this tax charge is currently treated as if it is paying your basic rate tax on the dividend, so if your dividend, added to any salary( plus a nominal grossing up of 10%) falls under the Higher Rate tax threshold there is no extra personal tax to pay. If your total gross dividend and exceeds the Higher rate there is a 22.5% tax charge due personally, and if your earnings exceed £150,000 then 27.5 % is due. This is very effective and is a true dividend due to business owners to help offset the stresses and strains of running a business. Unfortunately this is about to change. With effect from April 6th 2016 there is effectively no credit for the Corporation Tax paid, instead only the first £5,000 of dividends are treated specially and are tax free. Any dividend over this up to the Higher rate is now taxed at 7.5%, and over the Higher rate at 32.5% and additional rate at 38.1%! This will result in much higher personal tax bills for the majority of business owners and action is needed to now minimise its impact for next year. You should of course discuss this with your accountant as soon as possible as leaving it until April will simply be too late. What can you do about it? Well first of all you should consider drawing more dividends now if the business has the cash to support the payment. We have seen that many well run firms have actually been building cash following the crisis of 2008, but that it is languishing in a bank account earning next to nothing and once accumulated business owners are fearful of drawing due to the personal tax charge. This is going to go up significantly so it may well be worth drawing it now! An alternative would be to fund pensions for shareholding employees. The new pension flexibilities mean that if you are over 55 you can fund your pension from the business and still access the pension if you needed the money. If you are under 55 you need to be sure that you will not need it until you are 55, but in both cases the tax benefits are significant. A Company can pay up to £40,000 per 18
person in pension contributions in the current year plus the balance of any used allowance from the previous three tax years. The pension contribution is deducted from your profit when you file your accounts so will not attract any corporation tax. It will attract no National Insurance charge and no personal tax charge. It is the only legitimate way of drawing money from your business without incurring any tax on the payment and if over 55 and you needed the money the tax saving means you will be better off if you paid yourself ‘through’ the pension than if you took a dividend! Any investment returns from the pension are tax free in the majority of cases, you can access all or part of the fund from 55, 25% of the fund is tax free and if held to retirement you will almost certainly be a lower rate tax payer when you draw the taxable part of the fund than when you were contributing. The pension fund can also be passed on without any capital tax on death and there is no need to ever buy an annuity, you can hold the fund until you die and pass it on very tax efficiently. Under these new rules Pensions are not really pensions at all any more, they are simply very tax efficient investments accounts that can only be accessed after 55. Now consider that if you are still working, in middle age, and you are saving for the rainy day, why would you not put as much as you can into pensions? You can access it if needed after the age of 55, you get tax relief at your marginal rates on contributions up to £40,000 pa if you have enough earnings, and the growth is free from tax, the fund is exempt from IHT and 25 % of the future value can be paid to you tax free! BUT! You must act now as the Chancellor has seen that many would use pensions to avoid the higher Divided tax and from next April the ability to fund pensions from your own business will be severely limited. Here at Joseph Lamb we will be only too happy to work with you and your accountant to effect a plan to beat the taxman before April. Call us or email us now to arrange a free initial consultation. Castle Point Transport Museum E
very year, Castle Point Transport Museum opens its doors to welcome visitors to view the extensive range of period vehicles it houses. The grounds of Leigh Beck School next door are transformed into one of the largest transport shows in the area. Housed in the historic former Canvey & District bus Depot built in 1934 and vacated by Eastern National in 1978, the Castle Point Transport Museum is home to over thirty old and rare buses and coaches alongside vintage commercials, military and emergency vehicles. The display boasts a heritage ranging from the 1940s to the 1990s and in addition to the classic vehicles has a wide range of transport memorabilia and costumes on display. On the departure of Eastern National, the premises were acquired by the Eastern National Preservation Group as a home for their expanding collection and led to the formation of the Museum in1979. Whilst the locally based theme of the ENPG still predominates, the collection now includes examples from across the country.
In addition to the collection of vehicles, the Museum boasts a wide selection of ticket machines, tickets, posters, photographs and uniforms providing plenty for the visitors to enjoy. Also on display is a large scale model railway layout, donated to the Museum by Shoeburyness Model Railway Club. The original canteen is still used today by the volunteers at the museum. The working pits and service tools are still used today for maintaining the vehicles in the Museum. The Museum, one of the oldest commercial buildings on the island, is run entirely by volunteers. Open Day The annual Open Day and Transport Show is a great family day out. Not only will you have the opportunity to see all the museum exhibits but there will also be a huge variety of classic cars on display as well as military and commercial vehicles, Emergency Services vehicles and Motor Cycles. Full details the Open Day can be found on our What’s On page (page 16).

Castle Point Community News Canvey Island History Trail C
anvey Island’s first ever History Trail held on the 27th September was a hige success. The trail was hosted by the Canvey Community Archive and included events at the Dutch Cottage Museum, the Transport Museum, the Bay Museum and other historical sites across the Island. Volunteers at the Archive had spent months producing a map which pinpointed the places of interest - some long gone - and the many farms which once covered the island. Buses from the transport museum were provided to take visitors around the various venues such as the Lobster Smack, frequented by Charles Dickens and featured in his novel Great Expectations, and the King Canute pub whose name was changed from the Red Cow in recognition of the part it played in the 1953 flood. Janet Penn of the Canvey Community Archive said:
“What a great day it was. The sun was shining all day. Canvey Islanders came out in their hundreds. They were queuing up to get into the museums. A café ran out of food. There was standing room only on some of the buses. We are waiting for the figures but the last we heard there had been well over 600 travelling on the buses and that was early afternoon. We had people come from all over the country. One couple had come all the way from Birmingham.” The main event of the day was an exhibition at the Paddocks Community Centre where the Archive showed an array of mementos and photos. Other local community organisations also had displays of interesting local information including “Beyond The Point” - a local organisation dedicated to researching the history of South Essex.

Spooky Stories From Castle Point E
very town boasts its share of ghostly sightings and spooky stories scary enough to send a shiver up the bravest of spines. Unsurprisingly, Castle Point area is no exception and as October is the month of Halloween we bring you some of the spookiest. The Ghost in Hobnail Boots In the 1940s, it is said that a mother and her daughter were driven from their home in Thundersley by a poltergeist in hobnail boots! At first, they heard the ghostly sounds of the hobnail boots trampling around the house and as months passed they got louder and louder. As time went on they began to hear banging on the walls and eerie screaming which terrified them so much they fled their home. Some say it was the ghost of her dead husband who had come back from the war in spirit form. The Phantom Bugler There is a house in Thundersley that dates back to the 1700s. Apparently, it belonged to a lady with a large family who lost two of her sons in the Crimean War. Local legend says that she tried to summon the spirits of her dead sons by blowing a bugle in the early hours of the morning. In the late 1900s, a family living in the house were repeatedly woken by the eerie sounds of someone blowing a bugle.
supposed to have been used by smugglers to hide their ill-gotten gains. They would have got to the castle mostly from the river. They burned coloured lights and made strange noises to frighten away nosy locals. It was also during this time that the castle got a reputation for being haunted by a woman in white. A milkmaid called Sally, from Castle Farm, saw the ghostly woman early one morning. The ghost commanded Sally to meet her again at the castle at midnight. But the girl was too frightened to go. She was met the next morning by the ghostly woman, who was so annoyed that she had been disobeyed that she hit the milkmaid around the head, almost dislocating her neck. After this, the girl was known as “wry-neck Sal.” Canvey’s Viking Ghost It is believed that Canvey Island has it’s very own Viking ghost. On the occasional late night, a misty figure has been spotted walking along the mudflats at Canvey Point and it is believed that he was left behind by his fleet and waited for his ship to return only to drown in the rising tide. The Viking ghost has been reported to have been six feet tall, fierce looking, with a beard and long moustache.
“Wry-Neck Sal” Hadleigh castle has had a varied history and many ghost stories have been told about the place. During the 19th century, secret chambers in the ruins of the castle were
