Can you help Re-Home a Dog from Acres Way Kennels? Adopting a Dog

f you think you can offer a dog a good home, the first thing you need to do is to go down to the kennels, select a suitable dog you like, take it for a walk and see how you get on. Some people and dogs just don’t get along, so before reserving a dog, the Acres Way staff would need to see if you suit each other. If you have children, or another dog, they recommend that you bring them with you, to make sure that everyone will get on. Once you have visited the dogs, and hopefully found one that matches your lifestyle and expectations, a member of staff will arrange a convenient time for a home check. These are usually carried out within 2

or 3 days of your visit and take about half an hour. Once the home check is complete, you’ll be able to collect your dog. You will need to bring with you some identification showing your current address, and the £130 adoption fee. Special Appeal Preston the Mastiff Acres Way Kennels is currently running a special appeal to raise funds for a very special dog that they currently have in their care. Preston is a 3 year old Mastiff who unfortunately broke one of his legs. He had numerous oprations but sadly had to have the leg removed. This has cost the kennels over £1000 so a special appeal has been launched to raise money to recover the cost of the operation and to help further in Preston’s rehabilitation. Acres Way are also looking to find Preston a loving home. He loves lots of attention and cuddles and is looking for a relaxed home with lots of people but preferably no other dogs. f you do own your own Limited Company and have been paying yourself through dividends the chances are that you are going to be much worse off once next year’s Dividend Tax changes come into effect. At the moment you will pay Corporation Tax on your profits, currently at 20% of your profit. Any profit left after the Corporation tax charge can be paid as a dividend and as you own all or part of the company this tax charge is currently treated as if it is paying your basic rate tax on the dividend, so if your dividend, added to any salary( plus a nominal grossing up of 10%) falls under the Higher Rate tax threshold there is no extra personal tax to pay. If your total gross dividend and exceeds the Higher rate there is a 22.5% tax charge due personally, and if your earnings exceed £150,000 then 27.5 % is due. This is very effective and is a true dividend due to business owners to help offset the stresses and strains of running a business. Unfortunately this is about to change. With effect from April 6th 2016 there is effectively no credit for the Corporation Tax paid, instead only the first £5,000 of dividends are treated specially and are tax free. Any dividend over this up to the Higher rate is now taxed at 7.5%, and over the Higher rate at 32.5% and additional rate at 38.1%! This will result in much higher personal tax bills for the majority of business owners and action is needed to now minimise its impact for next year. You should of course discuss this with your accountant as soon as possible as leaving it until April will simply be too late. What can you do about it? Well first of all you should consider drawing more dividends now if the business has the cash to support the payment. We have seen that many well run firms have actually been building cash following the crisis of 2008, but that it is languishing in a bank account earning next to nothing and once accumulated business owners are fearful of drawing due to the personal tax charge. This is going to go up significantly so it may well be worth drawing it now! An alternative would be to fund pensions for shareholding employees. The new pension flexibilities mean that if you are over 55 you can fund your pension from the business and still access the pension if you needed the money. If you are under 55 you need to be sure that you will not need it until you are 55, but in both cases the tax benefits are significant. A Company can pay up to £40,000 per 18

person in pension contributions in the current year plus the balance of any used allowance from the previous three tax years. The pension contribution is deducted from your profit when you file your accounts so will not attract any corporation tax. It will attract no National Insurance charge and no personal tax charge. It is the only legitimate way of drawing money from your business without incurring any tax on the payment and if over 55 and you needed the money the tax saving means you will be better off if you paid yourself ‘through’ the pension than if you took a dividend! Any investment returns from the pension are tax free in the majority of cases, you can access all or part of the fund from 55, 25% of the fund is tax free and if held to retirement you will almost certainly be a lower rate tax payer when you draw the taxable part of the fund than when you were contributing. The pension fund can also be passed on without any capital tax on death and there is no need to ever buy an annuity, you can hold the fund until you die and pass it on very tax efficiently. Under these new rules Pensions are not really pensions at all any more, they are simply very tax efficient investments accounts that can only be accessed after 55. Now consider that if you are still working, in middle age, and you are saving for the rainy day, why would you not put as much as you can into pensions? You can access it if needed after the age of 55, you get tax relief at your marginal rates on contributions up to £40,000 pa if you have enough earnings, and the growth is free from tax, the fund is exempt from IHT and 25 % of the future value can be paid to you tax free! BUT! History of Castle Point

The Hotel Kynoch - Canvey Island

he Hotel Kynoch (right) was located approximately 800 yards east of the Lobster Smack on Haven Road. As the sign on the side of the building in the photograph above shows, the Hotel Kynoch was built in 1900. It was built by the Kynoch Dynamite Company which was based on the other side of Hole Haven Creek in Kynoch Town - now known as Coryton. Hole Haven Creek was an important place for the Kynoch Dynamite Company. Although the shipping of explosives bound for London had been banned beyond a certain point by the Thames Conservators, the Dynamite Company had been licensed to moor storage hulks in the creek - against the wishes of the Commissioners of Canvey. More than a dozen hulks were moored between Hole Haven Point and Pitsea, gunpowder being transferred from them to barges and then caves in Benfleet Creek.* Kynoch’s bought approximately 240 acres of land at Brickhouse Farm on the south west side of Canvey Island in order to build the hotel to accommodate their directors and business associates. The hotel proved to be an expensive investment and whilst the initial building estimate had been £2,500, a total of £7,000 was spent by the end of 1900 and opening was delayed until 1903. The Hotel, although a very pleasant residence, was quite isolated and it’s only access was via a track running below Brickhouse Farm along the Seawall. A roof terrace

was provided giving a fabulous panoramic view across the Thames Estuary and enabling guests to view passing shipping An elevated walkway led to the sea wall. The first recorded manageress of the Hotel Kynoch was Mrs Annie L. Bee. She was replaced in 1909 by a Mr James Went who later went on to become the landlord of the Lobster Smack. Subsequent hotel managers were Douglas Hemus and Edward Hibbert Smith. The hotel continued to run until the mid 1930s. During the war, it served as an army billet and then became the offices for the London and Coastal Oil Wharves. Sadly, this magnificent building was eventually left to fall into disrepair and was demolished around about 1960.

Bubbly and enthusiastic volunteers are needed to help marshal the course on this five mile run directing and cheering the runners. A fun day out and a great gift to disadvantaged youngsters.. Give the gift of Christmas Christmas is a time to be around family and friends, but hundreds of international students could spend the festivities alone. Why not host a student in your home for a few days so they can experience the ‘real’ Britain. All you need do is make the student feel part of your family. So, if you’d like to enjoy an unusual and rewarding activity, meet new people and travel the world on your sofa, please get in touch.

During the coldest months, the churches winter night shelters offer food, friendship and shelter from the harshest of weather to local homeless people. They need lots of help to make this possible so, give the gift of time this Christmas and help supervise the guests overnight.
