Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Southend, Westcliff on Sea, prittlewell, Southchurch

Can you help Re-Home a Dog from Acres Way Kennels? Adopting a Dog
I
f you think you can offer a dog a good home, the first thing you need to do is to go down to the kennels, select a suitable dog you like, take it for a walk and see how you get on. Some people and dogs just don’t get along, so before reserving a dog, the Acres Way staff would need to see if you suit each other. If you have children, or another dog, they recommend that you bring them with you, to make sure that everyone will get on. Once you have visited the dogs, and hopefully found one that matches your lifestyle and expectations, a member of staff will arrange a convenient time for a home check. These are usually carried out within 2
or 3 days of your visit and take about half an hour. Once the home check is complete, you’ll be able to collect your dog. You will need to bring with you some identification showing your current address, and the £130 adoption fee. Their staff will be on hand if you have any questions, and will be able to guide you through the adoption process. All the staff and dogs at Acres Way look forward to seeing you Re-Homing Update We are pleased that Libby the 4 year old Jack Russell that we featured in our last issue has been successfully re-homed. Buster our male 4 year old Mastiff is still looking for a good home, and we have re-featured Jack the Lurcher this month. We also feature 2 new dogs this month.

This month’s featured dogs Jack - Lurcher
Male / Age 4
Loves: A cuddle. Looking For: Jack is an amazing all rounder. He has such a calm and gentle manner and is great with kids and other dogs. Jack does not like to be left for long periods alone so would benefit from a home that can accommodate his needs.
Luna - Lurcher cross staff Female / Age 1
q
Loves: To Play. Looking For: Luna is a big bundle of loveliness. She is young and quite a bouncy girl. She needs to learn some manners but she’s great with other dogs. Due to her over exuberance she would be better suited to a home with older children and someone who is willing to put in the time training her.
Rosco - Staff Male / Age 2
How to contact them Acres Way Kennels, Great Burches Road Thundersley, Essex SS7 3NE They are open 10am-3pm 7 days a week. Visitors are welcome at any time during these hours - no appointment is necessary.
By email: contact@acresway.co.uk By phone: 01268 770402
Loves: A toy. Looking For: Rosco comes over as a timid fellow when you first meet him and was extremely hand shy when he first came to the kennels. Once he has gained your trust he is an amazingly loyal and affectionate dog. He walks and interacts well with other dogs but due to his initial nervousness we will be looking for a home with older children.

The Indee Rose Trust Coast to Coast Walk
O
n 1st July 2016, the “Ladies Team Indee 2016” took part in a coast to coast walk from Greatstone in Kent to Canvey Island. This is the second year that a team of ladies has carried out the 70 mile walk which started on Friday 1st July and finished on Sunday 3rd July. The walk was extra special this year as it was completed over the weekend of what would have been Indee’s 11th birthday. The Indee Rose Trust is a charitable trust founded in July 2009. It was set up by the family of Indee Rose Dopson who passed away in June 2009, five months after being diagnosed with a brain tumour. Their aim is to help children and their families who have been diagnosed with a brain or spinal tumour. They do this in three main ways: 1. Providing Treasure Boxes to children who have been
12
hospitalised whilst receiving treatment for a brain or spinal tumour. These consist of a wonderful box of treats created especially for the child. They also provide a one off grant to help the family at this difficult time. 2. They offer holiday accommodation for a family break when the child has completed their treatment as this allows the child and their close family some precious time alone. 3. Support when it is needed - there is always someone available to listen and offer our support. To make a donation, visit www.justgiving.com/ indeerosetrust. For more information about the aims and achievements of charity, visit the website at www.indeerosetrust.org or email info@indeerosetrust.org.

Health and Wellbeing Brain Exercises
So whilst these brain games and puzzles are fun and can improve specific skills, there are not a quick fix for mental decline associated with the aging process. A different sort of training, physical exercise, however, has been show to maintain and improve your part of the brain that controls your ‘higher level’ thinking. Numerous animal and human studies have shown that regular exercise improves what is called our ‘executive functioning’. This is controlled by an area of the brain just behind your forehead and it is what allows us to choose appropriate behaviour, inhibit inappropriate behaviour and concentrate in the face of distractions. Executive function also influences basic cognitive functions such as processing speed, response speed and working memory.
A
re you worried about holding on to your mental dexterity and memory as you age? Do you think Sudoko, cleverlymarketed computer games and ‘brain exercises’ are the answer? Think again, regular exercise, such as a brisk walk three times a week, is the key to keeping, even growing, your cognitive powers as you age! Despite what the advertisers would like you to believe, there is scant evidence that directly links computer or paper brain exercises with an overall improvement in mental faculties. Instead, these games tend to produce an improvement in the specific task the game trains you in. That is, you get better at the game, puzzle or at remembering lists accurately but unless the exercise spans a broad spectrum of abilities, there seems to be no benefit to general mental fitness.
14
Executive function starts to decline when people reach their 70s. But elderly people who have been athletic all their lives have much better executive function than sedentary people of the same age. Studies have indicated that when inactive people get more exercise, even starting in their 70s, their executive function improves. So do you need to start training for the Olympics in order to remember your shopping list? No! Even just a regular programme of fast walking for 30 to 60 minutes three or more times a week will make a difference to your brain functioning. Plus you get the added benefits of improvements to your muscle tone, circulation and general health! A big worry for us all as we age is the risk of dementia but again, we should consider an active life as part of our
to advertise in the next issue of The Local Business Guide call: 01375 402 546
protection against mental decline. People who exercise regularly in middle age are one-third as likely to get Alzheimer’s disease in their 70s as those who did not exercise. Even people who begin exercising in their 60s have their risk reduced by half. We’re not really sure exactly how exercise helps brain function: theories being investigated are the increased production of the feel-good hormone serotonin, improved blood circulation to the brain and the increased production of a growth protein that may stimulate the generation of brain cells and the connections between them. What is known is that regular exercise slows the age related shrinkage of the part of the brain responsible for executive function. So put down that pencil, don’t bother investing in expensive computer games (which encourage you do spend more time on the sofa) and pull on some trainers. If it’s a while since you exercised regularly or you have some problems with backache, foot or knee pain then I’d recommend seeing your local chiropractically trained practitioner before you begin a new
exercise programme. It’s better to start with a properly aligned and functioning body than to worsen niggling problems by ignoring them. Remember, it’s never too late or too early to begin an active life. This article was provided by Spinal and Natural Healthcare Centre. For more information or visit www.spinalandnatural.co.uk

Money Guidance T
his years’ Budget genuinely appears to underpin the Governments rhetoric on ‘saving’. The much talked about reduction in tax reliefs on pension contributions did not materialize, in fact it was positively rebuked before the budget by Mr Osborne. Instead he has introduced higher income tax allowances enabling more people to save by increasing net income, raising the ISA limit next year and extending the Help to Buy ISA ideas with another new acronym, a ‘LISA’. The Government have also recognised that Financial Services regulation, the rules under which firms such as ours operate, are too restrictive and have driven up the cost of advice. They are consulting on some regulatory changes and to allow advice fees to be paid out of your pension fund. They recognize that the Money Advice Service and the Pensions Advisory Service have been inadequate in providing advice to those who can’t afford it and need to make Financial Advice more available again. Needless to say, within the industry, we were not surprised to hear this, although it is pleasing that they now recognize our role and that a weeks’ training on pensions is no substitute for our years of experience and qualifications! The Nation has a long term savings problem and this budget can only help that. In particular it reinforces Help to Buy ISAs, whereby the Government will add 25% of your contributions each year as long as the plan is used to buy a genuine first main residence or to secure a retirement income. They are not available to all and do have some restrictions and caveats, but this is a genuine commitment to encourage people to save. This will be helped by the annual ISA allowance, including the “LISA” element) to £20,000 per annum from 2017. The Chancellor does seem to have an eye on making Buy to Let investment less attractive. As well as the Stamp Duty increases and restrictions on claiming relief on interest payments announced last year, he has now made them relatively less attractive by lowering the Capital Gains Tax on stocks and shares investments, but NOT for Buy to Let. This makes the relative return from residential property investment much less attractive than from other sources and is a genuine tightening of policy to make Buy to Let less attractive in attempt to slow house price inflation. This combined with the saving inducements detailed above may mean that more genuine home
18
owners are able to buy, rather than just investors, if prices do actually begin to slow. An interesting point of detail concerns investing in Commercial Property. The rates of Stamp Duty did not benefit from the tiered system introduced a couple of years ago, so by applying a tiered system most smaller purchases will benefit from much lower stamp duty. This will be of particular interest to those buying through their pension funds, and may encourage more investment in this sector, again relative to house building. The Budget reconfirmed and extended some of last years’ pension freedoms, especially around some conflicting treatment of death benefits and ill health early retirement benefits. This only reinforces our view that pensions are still the most efficient medium for long term investment for Higher Rate tax payers. Whilst Mr Osborne did not reduce tax relief this year for higher earners, it may simply be because pension providers and payroll departments do not have the technology to limit the reliefs without sometime implementing system and software changes. The Treasury would have wanted any reduction in tax relief to be implemented immediately to prevent surge of large pension contributions, so by letting it go for now they may be able to give providers and pay roll time to make the necessary adjustments for future reductions? Watch this space! If this is the case then it will be prudent to maximise any pensions for higher rate relief in the short term, as there is still the political will behind the scenes to reduce higher rate tax relief. A point of warning, there are two important changes to pensions rules this April. Firstly, The Lifetime Allowance (LTA) for pensions reduces to £1 million from £1.25 million on 6th April and those affected should consider applying for one of the two types of “protection” available. Secondly, those earning over £150,000 will see a reduction in the amount they can contribute to a pension each year. Martin Lamb, Dip.PFS Certs CII (MP & ER) This information does not constitute an offer or advice and the service described may not be suitable for everyone. Alternative services may be offered if more suitable. Investments can go down as well as up and you could get back less than you paid in. Past Performance is not a guide to future returns. The “from launch” performance figures are from 29th October 2004 to 16th December 2015, and assume a £100,000 investment subject to our initial and ongoing charges for this level of investment. The performance figure for the last year is taken from 16th December 2014 to 16th December 2015. Assuming investment in our unit trust/OEIC portfolios, the returns from our ISAs and pension portfolios are higher.

The Danny Green Fund Kayak Team n 27th May 2016, a team of 16 kayaked 150 miles along the River Thames in aid of local charity The Danny Green Fund. They have so far raised over £50,000 for the charity.
O
Danny’s father, Chris Green, said that the money raised will pay for seven months of physiotherapy for 16 children across the country who are fighting the condition.
The kayak challenge began at the source of the Thames at Thameshead, in Gloucestershire and ended after 4 days at Teddington Lock, in south west London. Many of the team that took part had no previous kayaking experience and kayaked for 12 hours a day, through 6 counties doing an average of 38 miles a day and camping over night on the bank of the River Thames.
He added: “Training was very tough and the team was really dedicated. It was a big ask because we kayaked the equivalent of one and a half marathons a day. It was really punishing on our arms, shoulders and chests.”
The fund was launched in July 2012 in memory of 11 year-old Danny Green, who died after losing his battle with brain and spinal cancer. The charity, set up by his family, aims to support youngsters battling posterior fossa syndrome, a neurological condition which can occur after brain tumour surgery.

History of Castle Point Hadleigh Castle
H
adleigh Castle was built in the 1230s during the reign of King Henry III and is the most important late-medieval castle in Essex. It is now preserved by English Heritage as a Grade 1 listed building. The castle was originally built for Hubert de Burgh, the 1st Earl of Kent. Hubert was, at the time, one of the countries most powerful men being chief justiciar to King Henry. The castle was returned to the crown in 1232 by Henry after Hubert fell out of favour and was imprisoned. The castle was built of Kentish ragstone and cemented by mortar made up of a large proportion of seashells, mainly cockleshells from the cockle beds of Canvey Island. In around 1365 it was rebuilt and heavily extended by Edward III to guard London against possible attacks by the French and it is mainly these extensions that remain for us to see today. It became the custom that the castle and its adjoining 500 acre park was given to a tenant for life, reverting to the King on their death, Traditionally, the tenant would usually be the King’s consort and so belonged to several English queens in the 15th and 16th centuries. These included Elizabeth Woodville (wife of Edward IV) and three wives of Henry VIII - Catherine of Aragon, Anne of Cleves and Catherine Parr. In 1551, it was sold by Edward VI for £700 to Lord Rich of Leez Priory who used the castle as a source of stone for other buildings such as churches. The castle later passed from the possession of Lord Rich to the Barnard family.
28
After years of neglect and the effects of land subsidence, the castle was in ruins by the 17th Century and just two towers that were constructed during the time of Edward III still remain. One of the three-storey towers at the Eastern side (which you can see on the picture above) stands almost to its full original height. The second tower, however, has not fared so well and only approximately two-thirds of it remain standing. The foundation of the great hall, two solars and the kitchen still remain and there is also a barbican which once stood adjacent to a swing-bridge. (A barbican is a fortified gateway or tower that would have been used for defensive purposes.) The English painter John Constable visited Hadleigh in 1814 and made a small drawing of the castle which he then used to create ten oil sketches and a single painting in 1829.

Castle Point Association of Voluntary Services Latest Volunteering Opportunities f you are looking to do some volutary work in the local area this year, the Castle Point Association of Voluntary Services has a whole host of opportunities available. Here are just a few of their current opportunities.
I
to ensure the safety of children. No special skills are required, but most important must be your passion to make a difference, your non-judgmental attitude and ability to maintain confidentiality..
Retail Therapy
Come Dine with Me...
If you have a friendly personality and enjoy being part of a team, could you help out for ½ day a week at a central Southend charity shop. You’ll meet lots of new people and it’s a great way to gain experience of retail or customer service. Not only that but your time will be helping the charity to get the vital funds they need to carry on their good work. It’s a great way to support a good cause and make new friends at the same time.
If you are good at cooking and can spare a few hours a week to support local homeless people, this is the ideal role. Confident and happy volunteers are needed to help prepare breakfasts and lunches and generally help out at this Southend home from home for the homeless. If you can rustle up a good fry-up and a roast dinner and would value having a chat with the guests, please contact SAVS to find out more.
There’s No Place Like Home
For more information of these volunteering opportunties and many others in the local area, contact the Castle Point Association of Voluntary Services at: The Tyrells Centre, 39 Seamore Avenue, SSS7 4EX or call 01268 638416. Email: office@castlepointavs.org.uk. Further details are also available at www.castlepointavs.org.uk
Many older people can have their confidence dashed after a fall or illness, leaving them lonely and anxious. It shouldn’t have to be like this. If you’re able to travel and are a good communicator you can make a big difference. You begin by meeting them to find out what they need to make their lives better. You’ll then identify what practical help they also might need and, with support start looking for ways to get that help. Help a STAR! A local charity run an excellent service supporting adults affected by drugs and alcohol. As a volunteer, you would support a keyworker to create a relationship of trust with the family, helping to make sure that everything is done 30
