Welcome A warm welcome to the January 2018 edition of the Castle Point Local Business Guide and we would like to wish all of our readers and advertisers a very Happy New Year! Why not get out and try doing something new? In January’s regular ‘What’s On in Castle Point’ on pages 16 and 17 we feature local society talks on the ‘History of Underwear’ and ‘Ten Pound Poms’, a Snow White pantomime, an Evening of Music by the Yardarm Folk Orchestra and a Quiz Night. We are really pleased to report that Monty the Giant Schnauzer is currently doing well. He had to revisit the Animal Health Trust as he was still a little lame on his right hand side. He’s had some additional scans which look okay thankfully and he appears to be making good progress. We’ll keep you updated on his progress. Both Lexi the Staff and Sasha the Siberian Husky that we featured last time have both found loving new homes. Unfortunately Jerry the Labrador / Husky is still at Acres Way looking for a new home and we feature him again this month. We also feature 2 more deserving dogs this month who are looking for loving homes (pages 10 & 11).

Castle Point Astronomy Club D
o you live in South-East Essex? Have you ever wanted to see the Rings of Saturn with your own eyes? You will get a chance to observe many objects at the regular observing nights hosted by the Castle Point astronomy club. Originally formed in 1969 as the Rayleigh Astronomical Society, the Castle Point Astronomy Club is a small and friendly group of people meeting near Rayleigh in Essex with a common interest in astronomy and the sky at night. Members are of all levels of knowledge and expertise - from absolute beginners to experienced amateur astronomers, and from armchair astronomers to those out under the stars with a telescope on every clear night!
to join, just pop along and see for yourself. They occasionally hold Open Nights to introduce astronomy to members of the public. They also meet regularly at a dark site in the Dengie Peninsula for serious observing away from the polluting lights of Southendon-Sea. They also have a range of Club telescopes, binoculars and other equipment available for loan to members. Meetings are held at St Michael and All Angels’ Church, St Michael’s Rd, Benfleet SS7 2UW. Usually the club will ask for a small donation of £2 for visitors. For more details contact the Club Secretary by email at secretary@cpac.org.uk or contact chairman Mike Culley on 01702 434449. To read more about the club and see a list of meetings and events you can also visit www.cpac.org.uk.
Club meetings are open to all and are accessible, informative and above all fun! There is no obligation

Can you help Re-Home a Dog from Acres Way Kennels? Adopting a Dog If you think you can offer a dog a good home, the firs thing you need to do is to go down to the kennels, select a suitable dog you like, take it for a walk and see how you get on. Some people and dogs just don’t get along, so before reserving a dog, the Acres Way staff would need to see if you suit each other. If you have children, or another dog, they recommend that you bring them with you, to make sure that everyone will get on. Once you have visited the dogs, and hopefully found one that matches your lifestyle and expectations, a member of staff will arrange a convenient time for a home check. These are usually carried out within 2 or 3 days of your visit and take about half an hour.
Once the home check is complete, you’ll be able to collect your dog. You will need to bring with you some identifiction showing your current address, and the £130 adoption fee.Their staff will be on hand if you have any questions, and will be able to guide you through the adoption process. All the staff and dogs at Acres Way look forward to seeing you.
Re-Homing Update We are pleased to say that Lexi the Staff and Sasha the Siberian Husky are now settled and happy in their new homes. Unfortunately Jerry the Labrador/Husky is still with Acres Way and we are re-featuring him in the hope that we find him a new home.
Monty Update Monty is doing well. He has had to go back to the Animal Health Trust as he was still a little lame on his right side. He’s had some additional scans which all look ok thankfully and appears to be making good progress.

Money Guidance Autumn Budget
In the latest budget, very little has changed for most people, which is a good thing because the position for investors is generally very good in the UK. Individuals are able to build up significant wealth in tax efficient ways to secure their future. The main changes in this Budget concern some small increases to allowances from April 2018, starting with an increase in the personal allowance to £11,850. This is the amount that can be earned before tax is paid. In addition, the threshold for higher rate tax is being increased to £46,350. Those receiving a State Pension will gain a 3% rise in April 2018 – a cash increase of £3.65 per week for the full Basic State Pension.
Investments The current ISA subscription limit is being maintained at £20,000 per person. This means a couple can invest up to £40,000 per year in these tax privileged investments. Remember, the growth within an ISA is tax free, they can be accessed at any time and the money saved in an ISA can be used to generate tax free income. For those making investments that are subject to Capital Gains Tax, the annual exemption is rising to £11,700. Gains within this amount are tax free, and if investing jointly this means a couple can generate gains of £23,400 per year without paying tax. There are a range of investments available that benefit from this taxation treatment and we typically advise their use once you have used up your ISA subscription for the year. Last year the Government announced that the Dividend Tax Allowance, currently £5,000, would reduce to £2,000. Dividends above this are then chargeable at 7.5%, 32.5% or 38.1% for basic, higher or additional rate tax payers respectively. If this is a concern, you may wish to consider taking advice on restructuring your portfolio 14
to reduce the level of dividends or using other investment products that are not subject to this tax. If you are a business owner, take care over your Dividend extraction!
Pensions Pensions remain largely untouched by the Budget, meaning they remain an extremely tax efficient way to save for the future, especially remembering how flexible they now are. Those with adjusted income below £150,000 can contribute up to £40,000 per annum, and utilise any unused allowance from the previous 3 years. Contributions made to Pensions receive tax relief. For example, a personal contribution of £10,000 would only cost £8,000 as tax relief makes up the difference. If you are a higher or additional rate tax payer further relief is available at either 20% or 25%, so for a higher rate tax payer a £10,000 Pension contribution would cost just £6,000. Contributions made from a business are equally tax efficient as they do not attract any tax lability for the individual and the company receives corporation tax relief on the contribution. In retirement Pensions can be accessed in full at any time, with 25% of this tax free and they can be passed on in the event of your death, very tax efficiently. If this makes Pensions sound good, it is because they are. Like for like they are the best place for your savings and they should form a key part of everyone’s financial planning. The value of investments can go down as well as up and past performance is not a guide to future returns.

History of Castle Point Hotel Monico - Canvey Island
T
he Hotel Monico was opened on the 6th April 1938 as a luxury hotel for British holiday-makers. It was the brainchild of local entrepreneur, Mr A.H Beaumont. Alexander Harold Beaumont was an enterprising gasworks painter and contractor who recognised potential on the rapidly developing Island for better catering and entertainment facilities. He acquired the land on the Seafront in 1932 and erected The Casino. The Casino featured ballroom space for about 700 people and an amusement fair. In 1938, the Hotel Monico opened on the adjoining land and was claimed, at the time, to be one of the finest hotels in Essex. The building was described by Mr Beaumont as “The Luxurious Hotel Monico.” The building itself took only ten months to build and as far as was possible, Mr Beaumont used local labour and locally sourced materials. Interestingly, a total of 25,000 bricks were used along with almost 230 tons of steel and thousands of oak blocks for the flooring. Local press described the building as “an outstanding architectural achievement with an air of continental smartness.” The original hotel had 25 bedrooms and featured large public rooms, a sun balcony overlooking the estuary, a 125ft by 85ft roof garden, a special children’s room and a forecourt serving refreshments in the summer.
sea level. The excavation of this was an extremely complicated affair due to the nature of the soil on Canvey. Seven hundred cubic yards of soil were removed during the excavation. The luxurious building was fitted throughout in light oak and all the latest, modern fittings and furnishings were used throughout to give a first class finish. The building was centrally heated by a gas-fired plant and a gas boiler giving hot running water to all the guest rooms and facilities. All the radiators were finished in gold. The Hotel Monico was eventually sold for £68,000 (not including the Casino) to well known brewers, Mssrs Charrington.
The building also features a cellar some 16ft below 20
