The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Southend, Westcliff on Sea, prittlewell, Southchurch

I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Chris a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Educational Visits In Essex Now the children have returned to school, why not remind them that learning can be fun by visiting one of these educational places in Essex. The Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear Bunker in Brentwood was designed for up to 600 military and civilian personnel, possibly even the Prime Minister! Their collective task was to organise the survival of the population in the awful aftermath of a nuclear war. A great day out - there’s so much to learn, see and do. For opening times visit www.secretnuclearbunker.co.uk Southend Planetarium presents a range of talks about astronomy and the night sky. All presentations are given live, giving plenty of opportunity for any questions you may wish to ask the knowledgeable lecturers. There are public performances every Saturday at 11am, 2pm amd 3pm. Booking is essential. For more information and opening times visit www.southendmuseums.co.uk or to book call 01702 434449 Mountfitchet Castle and Norman Village of 1066 near Stansted is the only motte and bailey castle in the world that has been faithfully reconstructed on its original site. Tilbury Fort has protected London’s seaward approach from the 16th century through to the Second World War. Working for the Community

Can you help Re-Home a Dog from Acres Way Kennels? Adopting a Dog

I

f you think you can offer a dog a good home, the first thing you need to do is to go down to the kennels, select a suitable dog you like, take it for a walk and see how you get on. Some people and dogs just don’t get along, so before reserving a dog, the Acres Way staff would need to see if you suit each other. If you have children, or another dog, they recommend that you bring them with you, to make sure that everyone will get on. Once you have visited the dogs, and hopefully found one that matches your lifestyle and expectations, a member of staff will arrange a convenient time for a home check. These are usually carried out within 2

or 3 days of your visit and take about half an hour. Once the home check is complete, you’ll be able to collect your dog. You will need to bring with you some identification showing your current address, and the £130 adoption fee. Their staff will be on hand if you have any questions, and will be able to guide you through the adoption process. All the staff and dogs at Acres Way look forward to seeing you Re-Homing Update Ellie the Terrier and Cara the Staff who we featured in our last issue have both been successfully rehomed. Ted the Crossbreed is currently on home trial with a family. This month we feature 4 new dogs looking for their “Forever Homes”.

Health and Wellbeing Live Life Feet First

Feet can be plagued with many fungal and bacterial problems as well as symptoms of more serious conditions such as diabetes but I want to draw your attention to importance of properly functioning feet. The most obvious symptoms of foot trouble are pain and dysfunction (limping, favouring one foot or the other, inability to put weight on the heel and/or the toes). Pain and dysfunction caused by illness or injury can force you change your gait (the way you walk) and create significant stresses on the joints of your legs, hips and lower spine. Your feet are the foundation for your entire body. When they suffer, your whole body is placed in jeopardy. Even without pain, foot dysfunction can cause your whole body to overcompensate, which can lead to back pain and even headache, not to mention the emotional stress of discomfort and limitations on movement that can spread from the feet upward.

T

he health and function of your feet have a direct impact on the rest of your body. A quarter of the bones in your body are in your feet. Simply walking can produce more pressure than the sum of your body weight. The average person walks more than four times the circumference of the globe in their lifetime. Many patients at the Spinal and Natural Healthcare Centre think that foot discomfort and pain is a normal. It isn’t! Your feet are finely-tuned marvels of natural engineering. They deserve to be treated with care and respect so if you don’t already love your feet, start now. 12

Wearing appropriate and properly fitting footwear will go a long way to keeping your feet working properly (see the tips below). Women have four times as many foot problems as men because they are more likely to wear high heels and pointy toed shoes. I advise all female patients to limit wearing high heels and to wear flatter shoes, such as pumps, for the majority of the day. Everyone should avoid wearing the same pair of shoes every day by alternating between two or more pairs. Chiropractic adjustments of your feet - and elsewhere in your body as required - can restore function and relieve pain. As a result, other painful disorders elsewhere in your body, but stemming from or causing your foot problems, will also be relieved. In addition, at my clinic we examine patients to determine whether prescription shoe inserts (orthotics) will offer relief.

to advertise in the next issue of The Local Business Guide call: 01375 402 546

Generic one-size-fits-all orthotics are good for all but 15% of cases. If however you have tried off the shelf orthotics then prescription orthotics may be the way to go. They should fit more comfortably into your shoes and they are designed to support and improve the functioning of your individual feet. They work rather like the way braces work on your teeth: by exerting gentle and consistent pressure to bring foot muscles and bones back into proper alignment. If you suffer from heel spurs (plantar fasciitis) then orthotics are an ideal solution in 80 to 90 per cent of cases.

• Shop for shoes later in the day; feet tend to swell during the day and it’s best to be fitted while they are in that state. • Select a shoe with a leather upper, stiff heel counter, appropriate cushioning, and flexibility at the ball of the foot. • If you wear prescription orthotics, you should take them along to shoe fittings.. This article was provided by Spinal and Natural Healthcare Centre.

• Have your feet measured while you’re standing. For more information or visit www.spinalandnatural.co.uk • Always try on both shoes and walk around the shop. • Always buy for the larger foot; feet are seldom precisely the same size. • Don’t buy shoes that need a break-in period - shoes should be comfortable immediately.

112 Rushbottom Lane, Benfleet, SS7 4DW Tel: 01268 752123

• Don’t rely on the size of your last pair of shoes. Your feet do get larger.

Money Guidance

How much is enough to live on in retirement? D

eciding how much money you need to live on in retirement can be tricky. Actually stating what is ‘enough’ is difficult as circumstances change over time. Starting with the least amount is where to begin, which usually constitutes all necessary bills to be paid for i.e. housing, food, utilities and clothes. Thereafter there will be expenses for socialising, travel, goods and services. A recent study showed that for a single person, a weekly income of £270 is needed and for a pensioner couple it is £348. This equates to an annual range of approximately £14,000 to £18,000. To provide £14,000 from a fund with an assumed return of 5% per annum would mean a pension pot of roughly £280,000 is required. Most people don’t have that as the UK average is nearer £50,000 to £60,000. This means that the required income will need to come from other sources such as State Pension (£151.25 a week for retirees from April 2016) and other assets such as savings. If we again assume that the State Pension will provide £7,000, the rest of the £14,000 will need to come from other assets. Let’s say that the £50,000 pension provides £2,500 per annum (5% return) we still need £4,500. If this were to be taken from the pension pot as further drawdown, it would mean that the pot would need to grow at 14% per year just to stand still! Other things also need to be considered such as ensuring that the income doesn’t dry up. This may lead to a decision to purchase an annuity. Is the growth / return rate sustainable? What if the fund is invested in the wrong sector or product? If you have an investment property, what happens if there is an extended void period for the rental? Also what if you

14

need to sell the property for other reasons? This would create a shortfall in the rental and therefore income. The tax treatment of other personal assets may affect the net income you will receive. Budgeting is therefore an important aspect to retirement. When someone first retires they are more likely to do more as opposed to when they reach their 80’s. This will have an impact on how much income you need throughout retirement. A lot of people will need more than the £14,000 per year in retirement and if you rely on the State to make up the shortfall, then you are in for a rude awakening. The recent pension reforms that came into effect in April 2015 were a clear message from the Government that people need to start taking ownership of their pension and retirement provision. What income is needed during retirement will be forever fluid due to changing circumstances and health of the retiree. Perhaps it would be prudent to start thinking about how to budget for the desired retirement income way, way, way before you hang up your boots!! As always, a little bit of advice from a qualified, experienced professional can improve your finances and help you avoid the pitfalls. At Joseph Lamb we have over 45 years experience and a team of highly qualified advisers who would be happy to help you. Martin Lamb, Dip.PFS Certs CII (MP & ER)

Rayleigh Community Local Charities Benefit from Former Chairman’s Year in Office

T

he former Chairman of Rochford District Council, Mrs Heather Glynn, has donated a total of £9,624.87 to guide dog charities supporting Blind, Deaf and Disabled people. Each year, the Chairman of Rochford District Council nominates one or more charities which they will promote and raise money for during their time as Chairman. The 2015/16 Chairman, Mrs Heather Glynn, chose to support three charities: Guide Dogs for the Blind Association, Hearing Dogs for Deaf People and Dog A.I.D. Whilst she was Chairman Heather organised a number of charity events, raffles and collections, and by the time she retired in May 2016 an amazing total of £9,624.87 had been raised. This has been split equally between the three charities so that they each receive £3,208.29.

20

Heather Glynn said: “I am honoured to have raised so much money for guide dog charities during my time as Chairman. Guide dogs make a huge difference to the lives of blind, deaf and disabled people, but this would not be possible without the work of these charities”. Nigel Sim, representing the Southend branch of Guide Dogs for the Blind Association, said: “On behalf of Guide Dogs for the Blind, I would like to thank Heather for raising such a wonderful sum of money for our charity. This will go towards the funding of our puppies and guide dogs within our group”. More information about the charities is available at: www.GuideDogs.org.uk www.HearingDogs.org.uk www.DogAID.org.uk

Rayleigh & Rochford Association of Voluntary Services Latest Volunteering Opportunities

I

f you are looking to do some voluntary work in the local area this year, the Castle Point Association of Voluntary Services has a whole host of opportunities available. Here are just a few: Volunteer Group Support The Rayleigh Peer Support group for the Alzheimers Society gives carers an opportunity to get together in an informal setting to discuss their issues. The group is facilitated by a member of staff who guides the carers to ensure that their discussions are centred on living well with dementia. Volunteers help to provide a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere, to encourage people to join in with the activities and to socialise. No formal qualifications are needed for this role. However, it is important that volunteers are able to talk to people and listen, empathise and reassure people, join in with activities and encourage others to take part in the activities and socialise.

A Very Good Back Seat Driver The Multiple Sclerosis Society are looking for volunteers to assist the driver getting members from their homes to attend their clubs in Rochford, either by car or by bus. The main activities are providing the members with events to socialise and interact, raffles, bingo, quizzes, zumbability, sailing and short mat bowls. Other activities are to be added in time. Volunteers must have a sense of humour and most importantly patience and understanding. Good communication skills and common sense are all required. For more information of these volunteering opportunities and many others in the local area, contact the Rayleigh, Rochford and District Association of Voluntary Services at: 105a High Street, Rayleigh, SS6 7QA or call 01268 772796. Email: rravs@rravs.org.uk. Further details are also available at www.rravs.org.uk

Museum Steward Rayleigh Town Museum are looking for stewards to meet & greet visitors, show them around the museum, answer any questions and general supervision of those visiting. The Museum will be open Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays 10am - 4pm and the the stewards will be required to volunteer for at least 1 shift per week (10am - 1pm or 1pm - 4pm). There may also be special evening events running that may require Stewards. In house training is provided. An interest in local history would be beneficial, but not essential. 24

This Month in History 2nd September 1666 The Great Fire of London raged for four days - destroying more than 13,000 houses and almost 100 churches - including St Paul’s Cathedral. A total of 6 people are killed. The great fire started at the bakery of Thomas Farriner (or Farynor) on Pudding Lane, shortly after midnight on Sunday, 2nd September and it spread rapidly west across the City of London.

September 1735 Sir Robert Walpole became the first Prime Minister to move into 10 Downing Street. Number 10 was originally three houses and in 1732, King George II offered them to Sir Robert Walpole who accepted on the condition that they be a gift to the office of First Lord of the Treasury rather than to him personally. Walpole commissioned William Kent to join the three houses together. . 19th September 1839 Today saw the birth of George Cadbury, the third son of quaker John Cadbury who founded Cadbury’s Cocoa and Chocolate Company. Together with his brother Richard, George took over the family business in 1861 at the age of 22. George Cadbury strongly believed that if you looked after your employees, they would look after your business so he built his workers houses grouped around cul-de-sacs and gardens to create a community. The village, located four miles outside of Birmingham became known as Bourneville. 30th September 1955 American actor James Dean was killed in a car crash today in California. He was a racing enthusiast and was killed as he made his way to a race in his Porsche 550 Spider. Throughout his career, he only made three major films, the most famous being Rebel Without A Cause. His tragic death at the age of 24 led to him gaining legendary status. Dean was the first actor to receive a posthumous Academy Award for Best Actor. 26
