Welcome A very warm welcome to the latest edition of the Rochford/Hockley Local Business Guide. The Christmas holidays are now upon us and we have put together a topical feature on where you can take the kids to see Santa (page 4). We have our regular community feature on the Acres Way Kennels (pages 6-7) to try and help them re-home some lovely dogs that need a second chance. We also feature an article promoting the services offered by the Hockley and Hawkwell Over 55 Social Centre (page 12) and the Harbour Club, a specialist day centre for older adults with dementia (page 21). We also have features on the Rochford Lesney Factory, one of the towns biggest employers in the 1970’s and 1980’s (pages 10-11) and on the old Rayleigh Weir Stadium and the Rayleigh Rockets, Rayleigh’s very own historic speedway team (pages 18-19). We also feature a piece entitled ‘Food for Thought’ which provides an interesting analysis of the benefits that different foods give you (pages 22-23). There is also our regular financial feature from our financial expert Martin Lamb from Joseph R Lamb Independent Financial Advisors (see centre pages). If you have any interesting stories about Rochford/Hockley or if you are a local team, association or charity that would like to be featured in any future editions of the Local Business Guide then please drop us a line at: info@thelocalbusinessguide.co.uk We would like to thank all of our business advertisers for supporting our Rochford/Hockley Local Business Guide and would ask our readers to support their local businesses in order to help secure local jobs.

Can you help Re-Home a Dog from Acres Way Kennels? A
cres Way Kennels has been caring for dogs over 20 years. They take in strays for both Southend and Rochford councils, and from members of the public. If you’ve found a stray dog in Southend or the surrounding areas, you should, in the first instance, contact Southend Council on 01702 215836. If you found the dog in Basildon, you should contact Basildon Council on 01268 533333 Sometimes, due to no fault of their own, people find they need to rehome their dogs. Acres Way are sometimes able to take these dogs into their kennels, and find new homes for them. They are visited by a large number of people each week looking to adopt a dog, and are often able to match dogs to new owners within a short period of time. This is far less stressful on the dog in the long run. Their ability to take in dogs for rehoming is dependent on the number of kennels they have available at the time - space is limited, and they are required to keep a number of kennels free for any strays that may be found by the council. That said, they will always endeavour to do their best to help you, should you find yourself in this difficult situation. Please note, that due to limited kennel space and resources, a fee is charged for this service. If you feel you may need to rehome your dog, please call the kennels on 01268 770402 between 10am and 3pm and ask to speak to Tom. Adopting a Dog If you think you might be able to offer a dog a good home, the first thing you need to do is to go down to the kennels, select a suitable dog you like, take it for a walk and see how you get on. Some people and dogs just don’t get along, so before reserving a dog, the Acres Way staff would need to see if you suit each other. If you have children, or another dog, they
6
recommend that you bring them with you, to make sure that everyone will get on. Once you have visited the dogs, and hopefully found one that matches your lifestyle and expectations, a member of staff will arrange a convenient time for a home check. These are usually carried out within 2 or 3 days of your visit and take about half an hour. Once the home check is complete, you’ll be able to collect your dog. You will need to bring with you some identification showing your current address, and the £130 adoption fee. It may also benefit you to bring a lead and collar, but if you do not have one, they do have a number available for sale at the kennels. Their staff will be on hand if you have any questions, and will be able to guide you through the adoption process. All the staff and dogs at Acres Way look forward to seeing you! Re-Homing Update Brilliant news – Sebastian, the 4 to 5 year old Jack Russell Terrier that we featured in our last edition has now been successfully re-homed with a new loving family. Sebastian was collected by the dog warden as he was found wandering the streets. He was underweight and in need of a good wash. Sebastian was at Acres Way for a number of months and we’re thrilled that he has finally been placed with a great family. We hope he enjoys his new life! Toby – the 3 to 4 year old male Lurcher we also featured last time is also about to be re-homed as well. Subject to a successful home inspection, a great family has agreed to take Toby as their family pet. So great news all round!

Jess - American Bull Female / Age 1
Jess is an un-neutered female of about 1 year old. She is very friendly and very playful. We would recommend that she would go into an only dog family, although she is friendly with most dogs, and not with very small children as she is very strong.

The History of Lesney Cars in Rochford The Beginning John (Jack) Odell and Leslie Smith, the founding partners of Lesney, produced their first toys in the late 1940’s. The Cement Mixer, the Caterpillar/Crawler Bulldozer, and the Aveling Barford Diesel Road Roller were ‘economy toy models’, which were cheaper than their rival Dinky model toys. The Milk Cart was the first of the company’s early products that came out with its own box (until then, all the toys were issued without boxes).
In 1953 Jack Odell discovered that a matchbox from the Norvic Match Company in Czecholslovakia could hold his newly designed new ‘tiny toy’ perfectly and hence ‘Matchbox’ was born. From this point onwards, the larger scaled toys began to take a secondary position within Lesney’s plans and by 1955 there were no more made. In 1966, Lesney’s received the Queen’s Award to Industry employing some 3,600 workers at that time. They also achieved a special mention in 1967 in the Guiness Book of World Records, when output had reached almost 100 million models annually, and the company showed £28 million in sales and a £5 million profit. More awards followed, and in 1968, Smith and Odell received the OBE. By then, around 130 countries were involved on the Matchbox success trail. The Rochford Factory In 1969, E.K. Cole’s huge factory, the Ekco Electronics Works on the Sweynes Industrial Estate, off Ashingdon Road, Rochford, was closed down, causing much unemployment in the area. The old Ekco building was taken over by the Lesney’s toy factory. It became the largest employer in Rochford, and in the first year of production there business trebled.

Until the early 1980s, Rochford was the main production site for Matchbox cars and similar metal toys. At one time over 2,000 people were employed there working both day and night shifts, making model cars at the factory site where the Lesney Housing Estate now exists. Unfortunately most of the work was tedious and repetitive and many of the workers were working mothers who worked a system of flexible working hours. Lesney were a responsible employer who laid on special Lesney buses to bring workers in from Shoebury, Southend and Rayleigh. Many will remember the distinctive Lesney liveried London buses travelling through Rochford heading towards the factory. In 1978, Lesney bought AMT, the US maker of model kits, and the American firm Vogue Dolls. But instead of boosting the company’s turnover, the acqusitions triggered a downturn from which Lesney would not recover. This was the start of the recession.
In 1980, it was realised that Lesney could not support the US market because of high labour costs in the UK, and that the only way forward would be to switch to cheaper and more superior production techniques in Asia It wasn’t long before the the firm ran into difficulties and Lesney went into receivership in 1981/82. The company was forced to close down with hundreds of local people losing their jobs. . In Lesney’s place, a new company, Matchbox Toys, was created to serve as a holding company for all the former Lesney operations. However, after many troubled years, the factory finally closed, and the company relocated to Rugby, Warwickshire in 1990. Matchbox eventually moved to China and now only a road name reminds us of the glorious past and a huge housing estate now stands on the site.

The Hockley & Hawkwell 55+ Social Centre I
n the Car Park behind Hockley Library is Hockley & Hawkwell’s best kept secret - “The Hockley & Hawkwell 55+ Social Centre,” where a warm welcome awaits you between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on weekdays. Established in 1989 by Hockley & Hawkwell Old People’s Welfare Committee, it provides around sixty lunches, morning coffee and afternoon tea, daily for the older members of our community in modern comfortable surroundings. Lunch costs £4.50 and transport is available for those who are unable to get to the Centre under their own steam, in its wheelchair and zimmer frame friendly minibus, for a small donation. However, you don’t have to have lunch in order to attend the afternoon activities – Monday, Whist - Tuesday, Bingo – Wednesday, various pastimes, such as Cards -
Thursday, Entertainment or a Speaker and Friday, Scrabble but you don’t have to be over 55 to pop in at 10 am/noon, to sample freshly baked scones or cakes with tea or coffee for under £1. When I first visited the Centre, a recently widowed lady told me how kind and supportive everyone was and how, having somewhere to go regularly, with such a warm atmosphere had helped her come to terms with the loss of her husband. If you feel this facility might suit you, why not pop in for coffee one morning to check us out or ring 01702 206208 for more details. The main reason for the Centre’s success is a dedicated band of volunteers, who keep everything running smoothly. However, sometimes they are over-stretched so if you feel that you could give up a couple of hours to help, please ring Carol Warren on 01702 202582. Wendy Clover, Secretary

THE LOCAL BUSINESS GUIDE WORKING FOR THE COMMUNITY
Money Guidance
by Martin Lamb Dip. PFS Certs C11 (MP & ER)
T
here are two stories that have appeared widely in the media lately that you will continue to read and hear about. The first is that of ‘Workplace Pensions’ , the second is of changes to retail financial services legislation that will mean fees will replace commission as the method of payment for financial advice. There already seem to be misunderstandings about these, and much of what I have seen in the media is incorrect or misleading. It is true that Workplace Pensions that operate via ‘auto enrolment’ went live this month, however the Government are phasing in their introduction over a period of six years, starting with the very largest employers. For smaller employers the final phasing in date with contributions at the full level is not until October 2018, however many employers may choose to offer it ahead of the deadlines. Employees will be Automatically enrolled once the employer scheme goes live and will usually have their contributions matched by the employer, up to 4% of salary once the phasing in is complete. Whilst there are numerous points of detail to consider for both staff and employers, it is important that you are aware of your ‘staging dates’ to make employers comply with the new legislation. Should you not wish to join the scheme you will have to notify your scheme administrator in writing, and every three years your employer will re- enrol you for which you would have to opt out again if you did not wish to join. We believe the new Auto enrolment pensions will dramatically change the face of the Personal Pension market and offer opportunities to save for retirement that should not be ignored. At Joseph Lamb we have created a new business unit that will be assisting employers in the setting up and management of auto enrolment schemes, we have already provided well received seminars on the subject and can provide an e mail ‘news’ service and fact sheets that will keep you up to date with your specific responsibilities if you are an employer. Please email us at workplacepensions@josephlamb.co.uk to subscribe to the service.

I now turn to the changes within the rules that control how financial advisers operate. The new rules come into effect no later than January 1st next year and have four main objectives.
1 To improve the quality of advice by increasing the minimum qualification requirements for all advisers; 2 To finally remove product and provider bias by banning commission and replacing it with ‘adviser charging’ 3 To re-define the term ‘Independent Advice’ 4 To improve the financial stability of adviser firms by forcing them to have more capital in their business (not now effective until Jan 2015)
We think these changes will radically alter the current advice market place. Already most High Street banks have announced they are pulling out of selling investment products, and many experienced Independent Financial Advisers cannot meet the new requirements and may well close their businesses or merge with larger firms. We are delighted to announce that we have already launched our new business model that meets the new regulations. We have revamped our fee structure to meet the new competitive challenge of the review, and despite what the media say, in the majority of cases you will NOT need to pay just to walk through our door. Our first consultation will continue to be free, and normally our charges, which incidentally in most cases will be lower than before, can still be met by any products you buy, but on terms agreed by you, not set by a product provider. If you want to know more about the’ Retail Distribution Review’ please go to our website, if your existing adviser is leaving the industry we would love to welcome you as a new client. Martin Lamb, Managing Director of Joseph R Lamb Independent Financial Advisers Ltd. This article does not constitute investment advice, readers should seek an assessment of their needs and requirements before making any decisions based on the content of this article

Recipe Corner
Tomato soup METHOD 1. Firstly, prepare your vegetables. You need 1-1.25kg/2lb 4oz-2lb 12oz ripe tomatoes. Throw the vines and green bits away and wash the tomatoes. Now cut each tomato into quarters and slice off any hard cores. Peel 1 medium onion and 1 small carrot and chop them into small pieces. Chop 1 celery stick roughly the same size. 2. Spoon the into a large heavy-based pan and heat it over a low heat, then tip in the onion, carrot and celery and mix them together with a wooden spoon. Still with the heat low, cook the vegetables until they're soft and faintly coloured. This should take about 10 minutes. Stir throughout.
INGREDIENTS 1-1.25kg/2lb 4oz-2lb 12oz ripe tomatoes 1 medium onion 1 small carrot 1 celery stick 2 tbsp olive oil 2 squirts of tomato purée (about 2 tsp) a good pinch of sugar 2 bay leaves 1.2 litres/ 2 pints hot vegetable stock (made with
boiling water and 4 rounded tsp bouillon powder or 2 stock cubes)
20
3. Squirt in about 2 tsp of tomato purée, then stir it around so it turns the vegetables red. Add the tomatoes, sprinkle in a good pinch of sugar and grind in a little black pepper. Tear 2 bay leaves into a few pieces and throw them into the pan. Stir to mix everything together, put the lid on the pan and let the tomatoes stew over a low heat for 10 minutes until they shrink down in the pan and their juices flow nicely. From time to time, give the pan a good shake - this will keep everything well mixed. 4. Slowly pour in the 1.2 litres/ 2 pints of hot stock (made with boiling water and 4 rounded tsp bouillon powder or 2 stock cubes), stirring at the same time to mix it with the vegetables. Turn up the heat as high as it will go and wait until everything is bubbling, then turn the heat down to low again and put the lid back on the pan. Cook gently for 25 minutes, stirring a couple of times. 5. Remove the pan from the heat, take the lid off and fish out the pieces of bay leaf and throw them away. Ladle the soup into your blender until it's about three-quarters full. Blitz until the soup's smooth, then pour the puréed soup into a large bowl. Repeat with the soup that's left in the pan. (The soup may now be frozen for up to 3 months. Defrost before reheating.) 6. Pour the puréed soup back into the pan and reheat it over a medium heat for a few minutes, stirring occasionally until you can see bubbles breaking gently on the surface. Taste a spoonful and add a pinch or two of salt if you think the soup needs it, plus more pepper and sugar if you like. Ladle into bowls and serve.
