Welcome A very warm welcome to the June quarterly edition of the Rochford/ Hockley Local Business Guide. As we enter the Summer season, I am always reminded of holidays in Cornwall with delicious Cornish Cream Teas. However, you do not have to travel out of Essex to find the perfect Cream Tea. We feature 4 great Cream Teas in Essex for you to enjoy (page 2). We also have our regular ‘What’s on in Rochford/Hockley’ feature on page 14 to get you out and about in the local area. We also have our regular local community feature on the Acres Way Kennels, based in Castle Point. The dogs we featured last time, Dexter the Doberman and Archie the Jack Russell Cross have both been re-homed successfully! This month we are featuring 2 new dogs, Cleo the Lurcher and Max the Staffy in the hope that we can find more loving homes (pages 6-7). We also have our regular financial column from our financial expert Martin Lamb from Joseph R Lamb Financial Advisors (see centre pages). This month also sees the formal launch of our brand new innovative website www.businesscard-directory.co.uk . Our readers can now find the contact details and location of all your local businesses in a straight forward and easy format with direct links into the business’s own website. Have look a good look at the new website the details of which can be found on the inside back cover of this Guide. We’re sure that you will find the site clear and easy to use!

Can you help Re-Home a Dog from Acres Way Kennels?
Adopting a Dog
I
f you think you can offer a dog a good home, the first thing you need to do is to go down to the kennels, select a suitable dog you like, take it for a walk and see how you get on. Some people and dogs just don’t get along, so before reserving a dog, the Acres Way staff would need to see if you suit each other. If you have children, or another dog, they recommend that you bring them with you, to make sure that everyone will get on.
Dexter -
Successfully Rehomed
Once you have visited the dogs, and hopefully found one that matches your lifestyle and expectations, a member of staff will arrange a convenient time for a home check. These are usually carried out within 2 or 3 days of your visit and take about half an hour. Once the home check is complete, you’ll be able to collect your Breed: Doberman Age: 3-5 Successfully Rehomed dog. You will need to bringName: with youDexter some identification Good with children: Unknown but would be best suited with older children showing your current address, and the £130 adoption fee. Good with dogs: Yes but would be need to meet and greet other dog.
Archie -
Additional information: Please call or visit for addition information
Their staff will be on hand if you have any questions, and will be able to guide you through the adoption process. All the staff and dogs at Acres Way look forward to seeing you Re-Homing Update Brilliant news – Dexter, the 3 - 5 year old Doberman that we featured in our last issue has been successfully re-homed with a new loving family. We are thrilled that Archie has also been placed with a great family.

THE LOCAL BUSINESS GUIDE WORKING FOR THE COMMUNITY
Money Guidance
by Martin Lamb Dip. PFS Certs C11 (MP & ER)
I
SAs , Pensions, Unit Trusts, ‘OEICS’, Bonds………… The world of investments can be very confusing, and even intimidating. Each ‘vehicle’ has it’s own taxation rules, which may be more or less beneficial to you dependent on your own circumstances. It is vital that you seek advice to make sure that your savings and investments are in the most tax efficient vehicles for you, and equally important to ensure that the investments within each vehicle are suitable. An ISA for example can be a ‘cash’ ISA which simply puts your money on deposit, or a ‘stocks and shares’ ISA. The term ‘stocks and shares’ ISA is misleading, as there are many investments that you can place in one these that are not stocks and shares such as Property funds, Government and Corporate Bond funds, Overseas bonds funds and Commodity funds. You can, with advice, build a balanced portfolio of investments inside a Stocks and Shares ISA, or indeed a personal pension. Whist it feels sensible to take little or no risk with the underlying investments, it is very important to understand how the world is changing and that taking little ‘risk’ with your savings could end up costing you dearly. At Joseph Lamb’s we believe that inflation will continue to increase, and don’t forget that the governments new ‘CPI’ inflation measure misleads. Have you filled your car up or a shopping trolley lately? We are all experiencing inflation running much higher than the official figure. In the meantime interest rates are now almost certain to remain at or around these alltime lows for years to come as the Government has to keep borrowing costs down, or we are all doomed! So whilst it may appear that leaving money in 10
‘safe havens’ such as cash or Government Bonds is the right thing to do, inflation will almost certainly erode it’s value very significantly. We have lost track of how many clients we have who retired ten or more years ago and are now feeling the pinch. If you want your money to deliver an income, then inflation is an even bigger problem as if you spend your interest the remaining capital balance becomes worth less and less very quickly. Only by investing some of your money in ‘real assets’ do you stand any chance of beating inflation going forwards. It may appear that ‘Investments’ are not delivering, but that is simply not the case, the returns since 2004 in our Medium risk portfolios are up to 8.13% pa, including the impact of the 2008 crisis, and have been performing more strongly than that recently. The world is changing, and still growing, but the relative importance of ‘The West’ is declining and any investment portfolio should reflect this. You can only invest in this growth by using a diverse portfolio not by leaving your money on deposit or in Cash ISAs, which can be transferred to Stocks and Shares ISAs. Inflation doesn’t stop when you retire! It must be allowed for in your retirement planning and you must look further down the road than age 65. Many of us will live longer in retirement than we earned a good living for……….this means we will all need more savings behind us than we imagine. Start now, tomorrow will be too late! And seek proper advice from acknowledge advisers with a long term track record! Martin Lamb, Managing Director of Joseph R Lamb Independent Financial Advisers Ltd. Investments may go down as well as up, Past performance is no guarantee of future performance. This article does not constitute investment advice, readers should seek an assessment of their needs and requirements before making any decisions based on the content of this article

1st Stop Cars 1st Stop Cars Ltd formed in 1990 at its present location at 72 West Street cornering Union Lane – comprising of 2 ramps and 1 MOT testing bay. An opportunity arose when the retail showroom cornering West Street and Union Lane became available, the company moved its reception area into it and expanded into the sale of second-hand quality small hatchbacks. The company continued to grow, and in 2005 expanded its operation in repairs and diagnostic fault finding on most makes and models of cars and vans into an adjoining workshop. The ‘scrapage’ scheme in 2009 encouraged consumers to buy new cars, and this had quite an impact on the company so they had to make some changes. They closed the showroom to fully concentrate on vehicle repairs,
servicing and MOT testing in the workshops situated behind the showroom, and also relocated the reception area. The company continued to grow, and in 2005 expanded its operation in repairs and diagnostic fault finding on most makes and models of cars and vans into an adjoining workshop. In 2012 the company started MOT testing and maintenance of motor cycles and scooters. The company continues to thrive with a workshop capacity of 9 ramps and 2 MOT bays and is one of the largest independent repair garages in the area. It’s success is quite simple - “to give honest advice to all customers, only recommend parts that are absolutely necessary for any repairs, inform customers of total costs before work commences and return vehicles promptly.” 1st Stop Cars, 68 - 72 West Street, Rochford, SS4 1AS 01702 544284 / 548431 - www.1ststopcars.co.uk
