Can you help Re-Home a Dog from Acres Way Kennels? Adopting a Dog
I
f you think you can offer a dog a good home, the first thing you need to do is to go down to the kennels, select a suitable dog you like, take it for a walk and see how you get on. Some people and dogs just don’t get along, so before reserving a dog, the Acres Way staff would need to see if you suit each other. If you have children, or another dog, they recommend that you bring them with you, to make sure that everyone will get on.
weeks in the kennels having continuous treatment for her skin, regular scrub ups including cutting her nails and eating plenty to regain a safe weight. Below is a picture of her on arrival to the kennels and below that picture is a picture of her now in her loving new home.
Once you have visited the dogs, and hopefully found one that matches your lifestyle and expectations, a member of staff will arrange a convenient time for a home check. These are usually carried out within 2 or 3 days of your visit and take about half an hour. Once the home check is complete, you’ll be able to collect your dog. You will need to bring with you some identification showing your current address, and the £130 adoption fee. Their staff will be on hand if you have any questions, and will be able to guide you through the adoption process. All the staff and dogs at Acres Way look forward to seeing you Twiggy – a great example of the difference Acres Way can make to a dog’s life ! Twiggy was a female staff that was brought into the kennels via the local council. She was truly emaciated, claws almost so long that they curled back round to her pads and a horrendous skin condition. She spent many 10

THE LOCAL BUSINESS GUIDE WORKING FOR THE COMMUNITY
Money Guidance
by Martin Lamb Dip. PFS Certs C11 (MP & ER)
A
recent survey showed that only a third of the population trusted Financial Advisers. This is disappointing as our incredibly complex financial services market means that the layman has virtually no chance of making the correct decisions without some professional guidance. The point at which you chose to retire and draw your pensions may well be the most important financial decision you make in your life. Your pension fund is likely to be your second largest asset after your home, and the decisions you make with at retirement may well be irreversible and can affect the rest of your life. We may moan about the NHS but we should all be thankful that as a result of medical advances and ‘free’ treatment for all, that life expectancy has risen incredibly since the war, so much so that many of us will be retired for more years than we earned a decent living. Just think about that for a second, you may well have started earning ‘proper’ money in your early thirties, be retiring thirty years later, and live into your early nineties…………….. That is scary. Just think what prices were thirty years ago. How much did you pay for your first house? What were you earning then? Inflation may well be higher going forwards than over the last twenty years, so just how will your pension fund cope? Most of us retiring will accept the first ‘quote’ presented to us by our pension providers. Once this is done it probably can’t be reversed and you could be locked in to a static, uncompetitive annuity. It may not provide any benefit for your spouse or partner in the event of your death, and almost certainly won’t have any element of inflation proofing. Even if you shop around using annuity comparison sites, many of these do not find the best deal
18 10
and will they walk you through all of your choices? Have you heard of Temporary Annuities, Investment Backed Annuities, Income Drawdown or Enhanced Annuities? These products all have features that differ from ‘conventional’ annuities, and if you don’t consider them, you may well be making the wrong choice. Remember this may be the biggest choice you ever make! much of the material sent out at the point of retirement is confusing and unclear. Before you accept any pension quote and draw your pension you need to ask yourself; How much Tax Free Cash should I take? Why should I take Tax Free Cash if I don’t need it ? Do my existing pension plans have any valuable guarantees that are not obvious? How much spouse or partner’s pension should I allow for? Do I buy an inflation linked annuity? What happens to the funds on my or my spouse or partner’s death? Can I pass my pension fund on to my children? Annuity rates are at an all time low, should I retire later? How can I get an income but not lock into low annuity rates? I want to keep working and need some cash but not my pension, how can I do this? If you don’t know the answers to these questions, then you need advice! At Joseph Lamb’s we have been providing point of retirement advice for over 40 years. We can help you to plan your retirement from a few years out if needed or even help you to retire earlier than you may have expected. Contact us for a free initial consultation and a copy of our retirement guide. Martin Lamb, Dip.pFS Certs CII (mp & ER) Investments may go down as well as up, Past performance is no guarantee of future performance. Hawkwell - A Short History H
awkwell is mentioned in the Domesday Book, but not as ‘Hawkwell’, it is Hacuuella or Hechuuella. In ancient records it has been spelt in various ways, such as Hacwell, Hachewell, Heckwell, Hawkeswell. As recently as 1858 Hackwell was used on a Deed in connection with the Manor of Clements. It could be derived from Hawk and Well although Philip Benton, in late 19th century, suggested that it could be from the German ‘Hochwell’, or High Well. There were many wells in the parish, but the High Well was the one near the White Hart, there was also one at the top of Victor Gardens, and one in Ironwell Lane was called the Iron Well because the water was hard, as compared with the soft water of the High Well. Also Hacuuella or Hechuuella, could be from the Saxon words for ‘bend in the stream’. The Hawkwell entry in the Domesday Book lists 8 villagers, 5 smallholders, 3 slaves, 7 ploughs, 4 acres of meadow & woodland, 10 pigs, 2 cobs (sturdy horses), 16 cattle, 106 sheep, 20 pigs and 2 beehives. There were 2 Manors in Hawkwell - Clements Hall Manor took its name from Philip Clement who owned it in 1440. The present house, a timber framed, weather boarded building, is 16th century and had a restored fireplace with a carved wooden over mantel and some 17th century panelling. The jurisdiction of the Manor of Hawkwell became extinct, but in the reign of Edward the Confessor (1005-66), Ulmar, a free man, owned the parish and at the time of the Domesday Book survey Eudo and his under tenant Pirot, together with Suene (Sweyne) had lands here. Pirot’s successors continued at Hawkwell Hall until 1340. Hawkwell Hall is now a farm and can be seen from St. Mary’s Church. The present house was built in 1833.
12
The Parish Church of St. Mary the Virgin is estimated to date from about 1400 but others think it could be older, perhaps 1300. William de Bayeuse is the name of the first Rector but it is not dated. The second, Alexander de Bayeuse, has the date of 1323. There are several other old houses in the parish including Mount Bovers Farmhouse, built approximately 1448, was at one time owned by Christ’s College, Cambridge and Sweynes (Swaines) Farm a timber framed weather boarded house built in the 16th century. Benton’s Cottages just past the White Hart were three clap boarded cottages with rope staircases and peg tiles on the roof. They were pulled down in 1936 and the present house called “Bentons” was built using materials from the old cottages, some of the bricks were said to be 400 years old. It is recorded that James Benton was the Innholder of The White Hart in 1792. In the mid 18th century a stage coach went three times a week through Ironwell Lane, which was then the main road, and on to London. So perhaps the date of 1792 was right for the White Hart to appear, to take advantage of the new influx of travellers.
