WELCOME

Haley Wood MSN, WHNP, CANS Nurse Practitioner

. W y e l a H From the Editor Over the past year, I have learned to remind myself, “Haley, it’s progress, not perfection!” Our second edition magazine, “Becoming Your Best,” is focused on becoming the best version of you, inside and out! Often during consultation with patients, I explain that I want them to look like the best version of them at the age they are in–not to look 10 years younger. Sure, I have some who wish for their face of yesteryear, but, in general, most want to look like the best version of themselves at their current age! Amen! Our life is a book with many chapters. As I move into the next chapter of my life, personally and professionally, I have learned that it’s okay to let those old chapters be just that...old chapters. Yes, they have molded you into the person you are today, they gave depth to your life but it doesn’t mean you have to keep writing that same story. So how do you start writing a new chapter? Self-awareness. I took a deep dive into the Enneagram about six months ago, reading Ian Cron’s book, The Road Back to You. The book was incredibly insightful and I learned a lot about myself. Being aware of my unhealthy behaviors allows me to not only know that about myself, but also change it. It’s the awareness and change that allow a new chapter to be written. For example, I am

an Enneagram Type 1, The Reformer. I am very hard on myself, so I am mindful to give myself grace when I fail my expectations. Like I said, it’s progress, not perfection! Don’t pass up Cara and Beth’s article on the Enneagram starting on page 16. If you need to start writing a new chapter, don’t miss this segment! And, let’s be real ... the best version of you might be wearing Buffy’s selection of Dior’s Lip Glow lipstick or Amanda’s choice of a super cute nude pump to the next girl’s night out! Lord knows I love a bold lip! Above all, learn to love and take care of yourself! It’s not easy in today’s world of carpool and parenting teenagers, rest assured, I get it! Remember, we are worth it! We only have one life so enjoy becoming your best version! Know where to find your joy and be mindful to do things in life that are in keeping with your passions and joy. Follow your arrow, keep your standards high, don’t compromise on the things in life that really matter and write a new chapter in your life! You are worth it!

I, Barbie Margot Robbie Set to Play Barbie in Doll’s First Live-Action Film Oscar nominee Margot Robbie has been chosen to portray arguably the world’s most famous doll in Barbie’s first live-action film. Previously, Amy Schumer and Anne Hathaway were both connected to the project. Much like Barbie, the star is no stranger to taking on a spectrum of roles herself, having played figure skater Tonya Harding and comic book character Harley Quinn. “I’m so honored to take on this role and produce a film that I believe will have a tremendously positive impact on children and audiences worldwide,” Robbie says.

Kate Winslet to Return to Television Kate Winslet, the de facto queen of the world, is set to return to TV with Mare of Easttown, a new limited series on HBO. The show will star Winslet as a small-town Pennsylvania police detective who investigates a murder as her life falls apart. The network has a great habit of featuring female leads in strong, surprising turns (see: Sharp Objects, Big Little Lies, etc.), and Winslet’s range of work should prove no different.

Amazon to Stream New Mindy Kaling Film Amazon recently bought the rights to stream Late Night, a film written by and starring Mindy Kaling. In a life-imitating-art moment, the film is about a young comedy writer (Kaling) who is hired to help diversify an all-male writers room for a late-night talk show. Late Night, also starring the always wonderful Emma Thompson and John Lithgow, will almost certainly be a super-streamable pick. Get ready to Amazon-Prime some popcorn and settle in for a female-powered movie night.

Book Recommendation: Where the Crawdads Sing — Delia Owens Where the Crawdads Sing is a coming-of-age story set in the 1950s and ‘60s with themes just as relevant in 2019 as they were half a century ago. The story centers on Kya, a sensitive and intelligent girl who was abandoned by her family as a child and forges a new life on her own in the swamplands of North Carolina. Get in touch with nature through Kya’s connection with the world around her, and marvel at Owens’ character development and ability to build tension.

Rihanna Possibly Launching New Fashion Line Following in the success of her wildly popular Fenty Beauty line, Rihanna is now in talks to potentially launch a fashion house with multinational luxury goods conglomerate Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton (LVMH), which is also Fenty’s parent company. The deal would make her the first woman designer of color at LVMH. Considering Fenty’s dedication to inclusivity, a fashion line headed up by the singer would surely be a smash.

Dolly Parton Becomes First Country Star Named MusiCares Person of the Year GOOD IDEAS

Dolly Parton recently received the MusiCares Person of the Year award, becoming the first country singer given the honor. The MusiCares Foundation was established by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences to raise awareness about issues affecting the music community, including addiction recovery and senior housing. Parton has always had a heart for others, and her Imagination Library has mailed more than 100 million books to children in the United States and other countries since its founding in 1995.

Music Recommendation: Assume Form — James Blake A slightly different version of James Blake than we’re used to hearing — both musically and lyrically — Assume Form is an intimate foray into the intricacies of love and connection. While he’s always been an emotionally vulnerable singer-songwriter, Blake’s new album has him opening up to love in new ways and toning down his former dubstep stylings. Assume Form ebbs and flows in pleasant, melodic ways that will make you fall in love all over again.

UNVEIL A BRIGHTER LOOK

Dermaplaning + Stimulator Peel Put your brightest face forward at all your upcoming events with a dermaplaning and stimulator peel treatment. Dermaplaning gently exfoliates your skin, removing dull skin cells and smoothing out your face to reveal a brighter look. It’s also the perfect smoothing solution for those with sensitive skin or rosacea, and those prone to redness, who try to avoid the harsher chemicals used for peels. Combine dermaplaning with a stimulator peel, which reduces the appearance of age spots and sun damage while also creating softer skin, to truly achieve a special event readylook. (Even better: There’s no downtime after a stimulator peel, as it doesn’t leave any signs of redness or peeling!)

ZO Stimulator Peel You don’t have to wait for a special occasion for the “Red Carpet Peel”—the ZO Stimulator peel, which is a favorite among celebrities. It exfoliates your skin, improving age spots and sun damage, and results in fewer wrinkles for younger-looking skin—without any redness or peeling. 02

BRIGHTEN UP

Illuminize Peel New to such treatments and hoping for something a little less invasive? We have the perfect option: an Illuminize peel is non-invasive while still rejuvenating and enhancing your skin’s natural radiance, helping restore a younger appearance to your skin while improving its clarity and texture.

Summer Shoe AMANDA SEARS

Wardrobe

Bring on the sunshine and pedicures, it’s time for summer shoes! One of my favorite things about warmer weather is the ease of summer footwear. From running kids to camp and vacationing by the beach, to attending BBQs and weddings, these five summer shoe staples (and a fun bonus!) will get you through the season in style. THE NUDE PUMP

THE FL AT S A NDA L

THE WEDGE

The little black dress of shoes! Hopefully, the nude pump is already front and center in your wardrobe. Great for year-round wear, nude pumps elongate the leg and play well with just about every color. Take note that nude hues can run from blush to caramel, and ideally you want to match your skin tone for the most versatile and flattering look. I prefer a patent leather because it offers a nice sheen and texture. Current fav: Sam Edelman Hazel, $119.95

My personal summer shoe of choice, a good flat sandal lets you run around in comfort and style! For this shoe, I love a muted gold, bronze or silver. Metallics make surprisingly great neutrals, but are still a little unexpected. Flat sandals are perfect for long and short dresses, shorts, skirts and your favorite skinny jeans. The rubber soles on my current favorite offer added comfort. Current fav: Franco Sarto Gia, $68.95

I love a good wedge–the salad and the shoe! A wedge elongates your legs and gives you height without losing stability. These go great with dresses and skirts, and I especially love them with those easy-breezy, palazzo pants! A cork wedge offers shock absorption and the same versatility of a nude color, but in a rich summer texture. You can substitute a raffia or jute material for this, too! Current fav: Jimmy Choo Alanah, $575

SNEAKER

FLIP FLOP

WILD CARD!

God bless the fashion industry, sneakers are a new norm! No longer just for working out, there’s a wide, chic selection of sneakers that pair perfectly with a pair of shorts, jeans or even a cute skirt. For versatility, I like a snake print or fresh white with a pop of color. Current fav: Dolce Vita Nino, $100

Every year I hear a story about how bad flip flops are for your feet, and yet I keep wearing them! Flip flops are the easiest of shoes to throw and go, and a necessity for summer days at the beach or pool. If you need more support, the Fitflop iQushion style offers arch support and a pillowy sole in a flattering, slim profile. Have fun with this summer style by choosing a wild color or print! Current fav: Fitflop iQushion, $32

For a little something whimsical and unexpected, throw in a floral printed shoe this season. Choose a floral print that highlights some of the main colors of your wardrobe and you’ll be surprised how versatile it can be by pulling a look together. These loafers by Gucci are absolutely dreamy! Current fav: Gucci flat canvas loafers, $695

Your Life

CONNIE HALEY

VOICES

Spring Clean

This is the perfect time to add your “life” to the spring cleaning list. Cleaning up areas that have gathered dust and dirt will produce the same results as washing your house windows – the sunshine sparkles more and the view will be clear and bright! To begin sprucing up your life, commit to the idea, carve out some time to think, and then apply the same principles you would to cleaning your living space: WHAT IS BROKEN OR NOT USEFUL ANYMORE? This could be a habit (the pint of salted caramel ice cream before bed every night), a situation (you always say yes to a co-worker’s request to socialize when you really don’t want to), a commitment (you raised your hand to be the Girl Scout leader only because no one else did), a thought (my kids are grown and I am not needed anymore), etc. If something isn’t supporting your overall happiness, can’t be fixed, or is coated with guilt, it is time to let it go. Do so lovingly and swiftly. WHAT NEEDS MORE OF MY TIME AND ATTENTION? Just like those cobwebs in the ceiling, that you promised to get to yesterday, you have places in your life that you know need some TLC. It could be a relationship, your health, a forgotten dream, a much needed vacation … Your heart knows. Listen carefully. The key to success in this area is to know why you’ve been putting it off. Common reasons include: not feeling worthy, too much effort, fearful of another person’s reaction, not sure where to start and not enough time. These are all excuses and none of them are valid enough to justify postponing your happiness. Choose the area, imagine how awesome life would be if you finally took action, map out a plan of action, and Do It! Life is too short for regrets and “what ifs.” WHAT DO I LOVE AND NEED TO APPRECIATE MORE OFTEN? This is a powerful, but often overlooked question. As humans we have a built-in negativity bias that keeps us on the lookout for potential threats or what is wrong in a situation. Identifying what is going well and expressing gratitude is a sure-fire way to override this biological programming. Make a list of all the good things (rewarding job, healthy children, loving friends/spouse, great hair), know why they bring you joy (this reinforces the feel good) and then focus on your list regularly. Cultivating this habit will help elevate a bad mood and actually retrain your brain to focus on the positive.

STICK TO IT

Don't Give Up on Your Wellness Goals These 10 tips can help you stay on a healthy diet for the long haul. MEL ANIE COOPER

01

tion plans that don’t factor in lifestyle needs tend to lead to lower adherence. Some of the best research suggests it takes 60 repetitions or more to turn a new habit into an actual habitual act. Keep this in mind: success is a journey that happens one day at time, and continues one day at a time.

Evaluate Your Readiness Are you ready to lose weight? Your attitude towards weight loss or your diet affects your ability to succeed, but even more telling is which stage of change you're in. There's a "transtheoretical model of behavioral change," which describes six stages of change: "precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance, and termination." You’re more likely to adhere to a nutrition change when you have moved to "action" stage, researchers say. However, keep in mind the only real mistake we make in changing is giving up on your ability to change.

02

Keep It Simple Trying to focus on too much to change may decrease your ability to adhere. Research has shown people who focus on one habit change have 80 percent success rate. When we focus on three or more habits to change that success rate plummets to less than 5 percent! Pick one area to focus on. Rigid nutri-

Use SMART Goal Setting SMART stands for: Specific, Measurable, Attainable. Relevant, and Time-bound. For example, a SMART goal may be to eat a vegetable at each meal next week or walk 10,000 steps each day next week.

05

Problem-Solve Look at your past attempts. Make a list of what worked and what didn’t work to help you identify what you will need to help you adhere.

Education When looking for the "right" nutrition program, it sometimes can be frustrating and confusing trying to figure out which one is for you. Should you try "keto," higher protein, or vegan diet? Working with a nutrition professional can help alleviate the confusion and guide you in the right direction.

03

04

06

Prepare For The Potential Obstacles Look ahead and identify scenarios that may pose a challenge to adhering, such as vacations, travel or lunch meetings/ parties. Create a realistic plan before they happen.

07

Prepare Environment Take a look at your home, work and favorite social settings. Identify your triggers. One of the first steps is to clean up your immediate environment. Give away or toss nutrient poor foods. Keep foods out of view in cupboards or containers. These preparations help reduce cues for eating when not hungry.

08

Build A Network of Support Positive social support enhances your ability to be successful with your lifestyle-modification efforts. For example, find a friend to join you, hire a nutrition coach or join a group support class. Think of ways friends and family can help you succeed in your efforts.

09

Self-Monitor Create weekly tracker to help monitor your wins and progress. Focus on positive reinforcement.

10

Improve Cooking Skills One of the biggest barriers for adherence may be lack of skills in meal prepping. Refer back to tip number three. Keep things simple. You don’t have to be chef to cook. In fact, it wasn’t until four years ago that I learned how to cook. It all started with just playing in the kitchen. Find one new healthy recipe to make week. Set aside one or two days a week to plan out what you will eat for breakfast, lunch, snacks and dinner. Choose easy recipes and batch cook meals for the week.

 1 large spaghetti squash  2 Tbsp. of coconut oil  2 tsp. of Himalayan salt  1 ½ lbs of ground Italian sausage  1 8oz. sliced mushrooms  1 red pepper, chopped  ½ white onion, chopped  3 tsp. Italian seasoning  1 tsp. dried oregano  3 cups organic marinara sauce  3 eggs, whisked  1 cup of nutritional yeast

1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Poke holes in the spaghetti squash. Cut the squash in half (lengthwise). Scrape out the seeds and rub oil in the inside of the squash. Place halves side down on baking sheet. 2. Bake for 50 min. until fork-tender but not over-cooked. 3. When spaghetti squash is done, remove from the oven. Run a fork along the fleshy side and remove the strand. Place in a 9 x 13 casserole dish. 4. While squash bakes, cook sausage, mushrooms, onion and pepper in a skillet until cooked through. 5. Add marinara sauce, Italian sausage, oregano, and spices and mix well. Stir the baking dish with spaghetti squash, 6. Add the whisked eggs to the dish and top with nutritional yeast. 7. Bake uncovered at 375 degrees for 60 min, or until eggs are cooked through.

Should Your Makeup Change as You Age?

BUFF Y HOLCOMB

matte formulas can sometimes be less forgiving. That being said, technology has come so far. If you aren’t someone who prefers a dewy look, there are now formulas that offer a “luminous matte” finish like YSL All Hours Foundation ($54).

PHOTO BY R APHAEL LOVA SKI ON UNSPL A SH

When it comes to foundation, texture on the skin can be your worst enemy. Hormones, seasons and environment can all be culprits. As I enter menopause, I have all this new texture on my skin that I’ve never had before, which is frustrating. Enter foundation primer. Foundation primers can smooth texture, blur imperfections and add longevity to your foundation. My current favorite is the Dior Airflash Radiance Mist Primer ($50). My favorite medium-full coverage foundation is Cle de Peau Radiant Cream Foundation ($128). Giorgio Armani Neo Nude ($38) is my holy grail of powders. It is my secret weapon no matter what foundation I’m using. This powder is the glow whisperer. Should your makeup change as you age? Absolutely. Are there hard and fast rules? Absolutely not. Your age does not put you in a box of “only” wearing anything! Let’s take a few topics and expand. SHIMMER AND SPARKLE

There is no magical age, like 40 or 50 or 60, where all of the sudden, something with shimmer puts a spotlight on every single wrinkle or perceived imperfection on your face. In fact, often I find that an eye shadow with a little shimmer/sheen can be more flattering on a mature eyelid than a flat, matte shade. I usually use matte and shimmer for a nice balance. The biggest help to any eye shadow application is using a primer. Its job is to smooth the eyelid and keep your shadow intact and the color true. Two of my favorites are MAC Paint Pot in Painterly ($22) and Trish McEvoy Eye Base Essential in Demure ($35). FOUNDATION COVERAGE

A foundation is only as good as the skin underneath it. A heavy, full coverage foundation can look like a mask even on a young girl if her skin is in bad shape. And on a mature woman with fantastic skin, a full coverage foundation can look flawless. The same holds true for a more sheer foundation. Try different coverages and see what works for your skin, not for your age. I personally like to keep it dewy as

LIPSTICK - BOLD VS NUDE

In the world of makeup, there is always a way to take most trends and make them your own. For example: Let’s say bold lips are in, but you think you’re too old, too young, or too whatever to try them. Well, grab a stain or a sheer version of a bright red or berry shade. One way to enjoy a fun, fresh lip color is with Dior Lip Glow ($34). It is a hydrating, bright, sheer stain of color in a variety of hues (and even most recently with sparkle). Chantecaille Lip Chic ($38) and Cle de Peau Refined Lip Luminizer ($58) are two of my favorites for a hydrated, shiny, sheer to medium coverage bold lip. The nude lip can require more work than you might think. A couple of my favorite options are Nars Audacious lipstick in Barbara ($34) and Tom Ford lipsticks in Indian Rose and Bad Lieutenant ($55). A big trend right now is the Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk lip liner ($22) and lipstick ($34)—a peachy pink nude duo that works on anyone. Age is not a deterrent to any beauty trend. Don’t ever buy the hype that you can’t do something because you are a certain age. That’s like saying you can’t do something because you are a girl. And we all know how ridiculous that is. Getting to Know You Using the Enneagram as a Tool to Become Your Best Self

C AR A DAVIS & BETH MCCORD

How well do you know yourself? Maybe not as well as you think. Self-knowledge is notoriously hard to develop. Even though we’re the ones we spend every waking hour and minute with of every day, there are several reasons we are categorically horrible at it. 1. So much of our daily behavior is unconscious. As a survival mechanism, we learn to operate on autopilot so we don’t over-tax our brains into having to be conscious of every single behavior. That would deplete us of energy and attention by the time we sat down for morning coffee. 2. We’re drawn toward the path of least resistance. We seek pleasure and comfort instead of actions and mindsets that set us on a course of personal development.

3. We identify with our feelings. We often think our feelings are reality. We tell ourselves a “story” about everything that happens to us. Those stories are often untrue. As a result, we often live with low grade anxiety, find it impossible to break our habits and addictions and never feel quite fulfilled or at peace in our relationships. This stops when we begin to value the journey of self-knowledge. The Enneagram is an ideal tool to help people jumpstart that experience. The Enneagram of Personality is a model of human personality illustrated by an enneagram figure, an ancient symbol that can be traced back as far as the works of Pythagoras. Oscar Ichazo developed this system of teachings in the 1960s, and it says that there are nine

The biggest thing is coming to terms with your “not so great” parts and naming them. Once you accept them, you can deal with them. If you’re willing to see your unhealthy parts, you can navigate yourself away from pitfalls. If you’re afraid of your shortcomings, you’re only going to experience more negativity. Knowing yourself leads to a richer and more dynamic life – and relationships. Knowing your stress points makes you less defensive. It can really open things up for better communication. The word itself comes from the ancient Greek words: ennéa, meaning "nine" and grámma, meaning something "written" or "drawn." Here's why it's so powerful: Enneagram is a framework that allows you to uncover, at your own pace, why you see the world the way you do. When people begin to learn more about why they do what they do, it allows them to unlearn all the things that hold them back from living out their potential. To unpack this a little more, we sat down with Williamson County resident Beth McCord, who is a speaker, coach, teacher and founder of YourEnneagramCoach.com. For over 15 years, Beth has been passionate about helping people move toward lasting change and meaningful relationships using the Enneagram as a framework. While she has spent hundreds of hours studying with some of the best Enneagram experts, her goal is to make the Enneagram accessible to all who want to know themselves better and transform their life stories.

The Enneagram deals with the frustration of pain points. Knowing your problem spots is where transformation begins. The Enneagram helps you see why you think, feel and behave in particular ways. I call it an internal G.P.S. You may know your location, but it’s going to show you the healthiest route to your destination – who you are at your best. It’s going to show what derails you, and why it happens time and again. WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND FOR BEGINNERS?

Ian Cron’s book [The Road Back to You] is a great place to start. It’s not heavy in Christian dialogue. For a Christian perspective, my “Discovering You” course breaks down the Enneagram into 14 short, easy-to-understand modules. (yourenneagramcoach.com) You learn about the nine different personality types, triads, wings and levels of alignment. You learn about core motivations and weaknesses and what drives or derails who you are. The “why” is the whole point of the Enneagram, and why two personalities that look so alike can behave so differently. It’s all about motivation. LET'S SAY, AS A LEADER OF A COMPANY, HOW CAN THE ENNEAGRAM HELP, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT'S SO PERSONAL?

It does a great job of showing how each type can benefit the company. For example, my Type 9 can see all perspectives, and can do a great job mediating and helping a company understand what customers want. At the same time, the 9 won’t thrive in a role where that requires conflict, because 9s really dislike upsetting people. Every type has strengths and weaknesses that a company can use to its benefit. They just need to be careful to not use the Enneagram like a sword.

ARE THERE ANY ENNEAGRAM ETHICS OR UNSPOKEN RULES OF WHAT TO DO OR WHAT WHAT NOT TO DO?

Don't type people! It’s easy to get a taste of the Enneagram and think we know what we’re talking about, but there are so many layers and nuances, and you can’t know what motivates someone else. Bosses, parents and spouses need to be especially careful. Each type has a wide range of personalities. It’s not uncommon for people to even mistype themselves in the beginning. So, it’s important not to pin someone with a type before they’ve had a chance to uncover it on their own. THE ENNEAGRAM ISN’T A DESTINATION, SO HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH MORE ACHIEVING TYPES WHO WANT A QUICK SOLUTION OR ANSWER?

The Enneagram is definitely a journey. In my “Discovering You” course I use a suitcase icon. Pack your bag and use it every day. It’s not that you have to be constantly exposed to your unhealthy aspects, but rather the more you travel, the more you find yourself growing. Some days we get derailed, but we recalculate and get back on the best path. The Enneagram gives you the tools to move you in the right direction. It’s not this magical thing that suddenly solves all your problems. But it helps you see what motivates your behavior and what is beautiful and wonderful about your type. While you may always struggle with your weakness, you’ll learn to navigate through it and be able to laugh. It is what it is. And that’s what I really love about the Enneagram. You can use it in a way that is healthy and respectful. You can own your weakness without letting it have power over you.

A satisfying primer on the Enneagram, Ian Cron's book serves as an introduction to the personality typing system and helps point the way toward reflection and growth. Organized into the nine types, you can read the book front to back or skip right to the chapter you feel may best match your personality. Take an assessment at exploreyourtype.com and see if your results resonate with what you read.

Happiness a Priority 20 ISSUE#2

We’ve all heard it: to be happy you need to love yourself. Mandy Hale, author of The Single Woman: Life, Love, and a Dash of Sass, puts it simply, “It’s not selfish to love yourself, take care of yourself, and make your happiness a priority. It’s a necessity.”

a want. (Unless you do and good for you!) But when you look in the mirror, your need is really that you want to feel good about how you look. This totally resets your expectations and gives you a clearer/more realistic idea of how you can accomplish that.

Yet, we struggle with this concept because we don’t want to become overly selfish or self-absorbed. But the true concept of loving yourself isn’t being “in love” with yourself, it’s self-care— caring for your inner and outer self.

After you differentiate between wants and needs, check your words. What words come out of your mouth; are they negative about yourself? Others? What is going on in the world? Words are powerful—think and speak words that uplift.

The true concept of loving yourself isn’t being “in love” with yourself, it’s self-care.

A 2017 Gallup-Sharecare Well-Being Index revealed a difficult season for Americans’ happiness. On a scale from 0-100 (100 being the most possible well-being), our well-being decreased by .6 points from the previous year to 61.5 points, due in large part to a decrease in personal and relational well-being. But Gallup found that those who look after themselves – especially among older adults – are 30 percent more likely to be happier.

But what does this really mean? How can I apply the concept of self-care to my everyday life? First of all, one of our missteps is mixing wants with needs. When everything in your life is a “want” rather than a need, and then you don’t receive those wants, you are never going to be happy. Establish a clear definition of what are wants in your life and what are needs. For example, when you look in the mirror and you want to look like a supermodel, that is clearly

In her book The Happiness Project, New York Times Bestseller Gretchen Rubin dove right into developing new habits of selfcare. “One of the most important things I learned as part of doing that project, and an idea that I put into practice in my own life all the time, is that I can influence my happiness,” says Rubin. “Yes of course, sometimes terrible circumstances make it impossible for me to be happy, but it’s almost always possible to be happier, and often with just a few small steps, I can give myself a big boost.” Ultimately, happiness comes from within and it’s something that we cannot give away. We can make someone happy, but we cannot fully give them happiness. Happiness comes through selfcare; caring for yourself entails knowing what you want/need, but it also entails listening to yourself. Take some time and listen, then practice self-care… happiness will always follow.

Ready to Move Botox? Beyond H E R E A R E 3 E N T R Y- L E V E L PROCEDURES TO TRY

It's no secret Botox is the most popular noninvasive medical aesthetic treatment. The RealSelf 2018 Aesthetics Trend Report, which analyzes user behavior trends from U.S. consumers researching on RealSelf, shows Botox retains the reigning spot on the top of the list. However, a number of minimally invasive cosmetic treatments are moving up the charts. If you’ve tried Botox and love your results, but are ready to take things a step further, here are three treatments that are great next steps that we recommend at The Look Facial Aesthetics. And as always, we take a custom approach to your skin and consider your goals as well as what will yield best results for you.

K YBELL A Hoping to sharpen your profile and slim your chin? Kybella could be perfect for you! To fully achieve the perfect results, it requires two to six sessions, but guess what? Once the fat is gone … it’s GONE. How’s that for something to love? As with all of The Look’s treatments, it’s fully tailored to each person to make sure you’re getting exactly what you need. BEFORE & AFTER KYBELLA

CH I N & L I P AU G M E N TAT I O N Did you know getting just the right chin injection can bring the perfect balance and symmetry to your face? If you’d like to lessen the appearance of a crease in your chin or are hoping to achieve a more balanced look, chin augmentation could be the key.

S CU L P T R A As we age, collagen production slows down and we don’t naturally produce as much as when we were younger. Enter Sculptra! Unlike any other injectable out there, Sculptra is more like a collagen “booster shot” than anything else. This is a great option for those who don’t like the thought of having a filler in their face (even though it’s naturally occurring hyaluronic acid), as it naturally stimulates collagen production, resulting in fuller, more youthful looking skin. Sculptra seems to fit a niche this way. It’s simply a collagen stimulator, and it lasts 25 months. And while it takes some time to notice the difference, Sculptra actually lasts longer than other dermal fillers. Bonus: Really want to fall in love with your results? Try combining Sculptra with microneedling to give your skin even more collagen-stimulating power.

“Many people don’t realize their chin can be injected, and it’s an area of the face that can add balance and symmetry,” Haley Wood, founder of The Look says. “If someone has always hated their chin, it’s often because they have a strong chin crease or because it’s recessed. Adding Voluma or Lyft dermal fillers to the chin can mimic a chin implant oftentimes.” Adding Voluma or Lyft dermal fillers to the chin can be a gentler way to mimic the results you’d get with an invasive surgery like an implant. As for your smile, yes, we all have seen the dreaded “duck lips” — but leave that to the non-professionals. Lips are Haley’s specialty, and she even has a strategy for how to make you more comfortable with the process and thrilled with the results. “We don’t have to put the entire syringe in the first session,” she says. “We can break the lip injection session up into two phases — two to four weeks apart. This way, you won’t have too much in their lips and it gives you control over how full you want your lips to appear.” You’ll notice an immediate differBEFORE & AFTER CHIN ence with both chin and lip augmentation, with the results lasting 12 to 18 months (respectively).
