. W y e l a H From the Editor Gratitude can be difficult to find on a daily basis. When the puppy soils my new rug, when dinner catches on fire in the oven because I was talking to my son and friends on the back patio, and when my friend’s husband is diagnosed with brain cancer, how in the world can gratitude be found? Rest assured, gratitude is there, but how do we find it? As C.S. Lewis writes, “Gratitude exclaims, very properly, ‘how good of God to give me this.’” I find this quote to be of great relief in times of small and big blips in life like poop on the carpet and knee-to-the-ground life moments like a cancer diagnosis. There is no way to explain why life happens, but there is only one way to respond, and that is to find gratitude. Ellen’s story of Brett (p. 16) is one of those sorrowful moments turned around by gratitude. Despite Brett’s short life, Ellen, Bo, Caroline and Luke found the silver lining by starting Brett’s Barn. As Ellen said, “Bo and I both said right after we lost Brett that each morning, let’s choose to be grateful.” Those are mighty and often lofty words to live by, but by God’s grace, they do. They touch lives every day through The Brett Boyer Foundation, and did you know, it’s in our very own backyard of Williamson County?

I see Ellen choosing joy. Choosing joy doesn’t mean we can’t hurt or grieve; however, it does mean that we must dig deep to understand where joy can be found. How good of God to give me a puppy that soiled my rug. How good of God to give me an oven and money for food. How good of God to give my friend the love of a lifetime from her husband. How good of God to give Ellen her sweet daughter, Brett, who now has helped millions. This issue's theme is “free to be me.” It’s about the freedom that comes when we embrace our story instead of longing for someone else’s. It’s about embracing what makes us unique (even the painful parts) and turning around and offering it as a gift to the world to make a difference. That freedom creates fertile ground for gratitude. Sometimes you have to dig deep to find gratitude, but God has it there waiting for you. If there is one thing I learned in the last two years of personal struggle: God doesn’t give you only what you can handle, rather, He promises to walk it with you. So, don’t go it alone in life, find a faithful Hand. Find gratitude. Choose joy. HALEY WOOD EDITOR + FOUNDER, THE LOOK

Hello Sunshine in a Box If there’s one thing you can say about Reese Witherspoon, it’s that you can’t box her into any one category—but there’s one box she is thinking about adding to her repertoire: a subscription box service. Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine media company recently surveyed its members with questions geared toward subscription boxes, as well as the kinds of products they might be interested in receiving in them. The subscription boxes would most likely center on items relevant to Reese’s Book Club, including seasonal reads and book-related items (e.g., bookmarks, lights, etc.). No word on if they’d also include whiskey in a teacup.

Katie Couric Wants Viewers to #SeeHer

Netflix Set For More Beyonce-licious

Katie Couric is set to debut a new weekly digital show—in partnership with People magazine and its parent company, Meredith—that’s focused on telling overlooked women’s stories. Called #SeeHer Story, the show is part of the Association of National Advertisers’ #SeeHer initiative, which works to promote and help portray more accurate representations of girls and women in media. "I'm excited to partner with Meredith and People to inspire the next generation of young female leaders by telling the real and impactful stories of so many amazing women," Couric says. "You know what they say: If you can see her, you can be her."

Much to the joy of the Bey hive (aka, Beyonce fans), Netflix has landed a three-project deal with the world-famous performer. By now, you may have seen or heard of Homecoming, the Netflix documentary chronicling the months leading up to “Beychella”— Beyonce’s epic two-hour performance at Coachella. Homecoming offers a behind-the-scenes look at how the star prepares, which is even more special considering how rarely she does interviews. Presumably, the next two projects will offer similar perspectives—and even more costume changes.

Serena Williams Ventures to Uplift Women Earlier this year, Serena Williams announced her capital investment firm, Serena Ventures, has been backing companies on the down-low since 2014 and has invested in over 30 companies total so far. Serena Ventures mainly focuses on companies founded by women and people of color, as well as helping to mentor young and upcoming entrepreneurs. Some of the companies they’ve invested in include Billie (a razor brand), MasterClass (an online course provider) and Daily Harvest (a meal-delivery service). Now that’s some love-love.

Sarah Finn: The Superhero Casting Director Behind Marvel

Music Recommendation: Amidst the Chaos — Sara Bareilles

We all know the faces of the superheroes in the massively popular Marvel Cinematic Universe film franchise—which is thanks to the real hero involved: Sarah Finn, the casting director who put those superheroes in place. Starting with Iron Man back in 2006, Finn cast every. single. actor. who appeared in pretty much every Marvel film (minus The Incredible Hulk). When casting, they had to consider not just the immediate films but also how characters could reappear and interact later on. Talk about an out-of-this-world gig.

Sara Bareilles has been out of the music scene for a few years, having taken a break from her own music to write the music for and star in the musical Waitress. But now she’s back with a slightly less polished album (produced by T Bone Burnett) than we’ve heard from her before—albeit still with all the emotion and powerhouse vocals she’s known for. “I just feel like embracing the messiness of who I am, it has to be a fundamental part about what I put out as an artist,” Bareilles says.

Depending on the severity of the acne, we can prescribe medicated acne wipes to kill the p. acnes bacteria causing it. When pores are clogged, bacteria has a tendency to take hold and thrive. Acne pads can help remove such buildup and prevent future breakouts.

CONTROL THE OIL

TR E ATMENT S

We can customize and prescribe an at-home regimen that will help clear the skin. In particular, to fight acne and its causes, we might recommend ZO Skin Health’s Dual Action Scrub, an exfoliator for use in the shower or ZO’s Aknetrol to help treat any specific spots that pop up.

Even the best at-home regimen can stand to be boosted with deeper treatments in the office, including exfoliation, extractions and hydration. HydraFacials in particular are excellent for controlling breakouts. Similar to microdermabrasion, but even gentler, HydraFacials help remove dead skin cells.

Much like almost anything in life, in order to achieve real results, consistency is key to clearing and controlling the bacteria, oil and breakouts. Getting into a daily routine of cleansing and using the right products, plus keeping up with in-office treatments, you’re sure to see clearer skin in no time.

Exercise regularly. Get 8 hours of sleep. Eat kale! Most of us have a pretty good idea of what we need to do to have a healthy body and where we fall short. We understand the correlation between good health and longevity. We know being physically fit will improve the quality of our lives. The importance of our mental health, however, is probably not on the top of our “to do” lists. We may have a working knowledge of the mind/body connection to our wellbeing, but we are too busy managing our weight to worry about managing our minds. We aren’t conscious that what we think about and focus on is driving our feelings and ultimately our physical health. Our emotions have a direct link to our immune system and overall health, supported by many studies including recent research by specialists from Pennsylvania State University. Tension headaches, digestive issues or constant insomnia are common physical symptoms of negative emotions. As humans, we can’t (nor should we) have a positive reaction to everything that happens in our lives, but we can start to cultivate an awareness around this topic and start reducing the negative impact our thinking creates. To start, we can stop doing the following: 1. Stop thinking our circumstances are the cause of our feelings. It’s our interpretation of what happened that is responsible for how we feel. We assign meaning to something based on our unique experiences, childhoods, insecurities, etc. It’s not what happens to us, it’s what we make it mean that causes discomfort, or not. A text doesn’t get answered right away. Your sister thinks it’s because the person is busy. You think it’s because they’re mad at you. Both assessments are opinions, but your sister’s outlook on the situation will create a less stressful reaction. Starting with awareness, we have the ability to alter

SECTION TITLE

CONNIE HALEY

Not Feeling Great? It Might Be What You’re Thinking how we view things. Changing or softening our thoughts is a learnable skill. Start practicing on the small things to prepare for life’s bigger challenges. 2. Stop negative self-talk. The way we talk to ourselves influences our self-esteem. Most of us aren’t aware of the negative mind chatter we bombard ourselves with on a daily basis. Start paying attention to the times you berate yourself and figure out why. Start to cultivate self-compassion. How would you talk to your child or a friend in the same situation? Be that nice to yourself. 3. Stop worrying what other people think. We are all hard-wired to care about other people’s opinions, but if we find ourselves stuck in this mindset, it needs to be addressed. It is our job to like ourselves. Outsourcing our happiness to others opinions (even those we care about) is a recipe for disappointment. This isn’t permission for us to do be self-absorbed, or behave badly. It is permission for us to show up honestly in our own lives and not be derailed by what other people might be gossiping about. Remember, you might be the biggest, juiciest peach, but there is somebody that doesn’t like peaches. And that’s OK! The end of summer and early fall are perfect times to take fresh family photos for upcoming holiday cards or to simply update your family portrait. I get multiple requests asking how to select looks for the family photo op, so I’ve put together some guidelines to keep your family looking fabulous!

01

Create a Color Story Choose 1-3 colors and have everyone wear them. You can add a variety of solids and patterns, but sticking with a few colors creates a strong, unified look. Jewel tones like coral, turquoise, raspberry, emerald etc., are flattering on almost everyone and look great on camera. Natural, earthy tones like charcoal, navy, and merlot are nice too. Wearing all black can be sophisticated, and all white can be refreshing, but keep in mind where you are shooting! You want your choices to complement your surroundings.

02

Layer Up! Layering pieces like jackets, sweaters, and scarves can add texture and visual interest, but beware of oversized, flowy fabrics or chunky knits that can make you look larger on camera. That might be fine for the kids, but I know you mamas out there aren’t going to like that!

Steer Clear of Strapless Sleeveless top styles are okay, but no strapless! If the photographer goes in for a close-up you don’t want to look like you’re topless. These are FAMILY photos people! Tops with scoop and v-necklines can elongate you and are very flattering.

05

Splurge on Hair & Makeup There’s nothing more disappointing than seeing your photos later and wishing you had made just a little more effort! Whenever taking any kind of professional photo, I recommend splurging to get your hair and makeup done. If you have time and are comfortable applying it, sunless tanner adds a nice glow to the skin, but I wouldn’t recommend getting a spray tan for the first time without testing the results prior to your shoot day.

Plan Additional Options Ask your photographer how many looks you’ll be shooting and plan to bring more than one option (this may mean a couple of different color stories). It’s ok to bring more tops than bottoms since that’s where the eye will travel. It may seem like a lot, but it’s always better to have too many options rather than not enough! Things photograph differently than when you normally wear them.

03

04

06

Loosen Up Lastly, don’t forget to loosen up and have fun! Bring some music, have a glass of prosecco, give the kids candy. A genuine smile and twinkle in your eye will always lead to the best results.

BUFF Y HOLCOMB

Photo-Ready Makeup Professional headshots or a professional family photo can be a source of stress for many of us. Many will reach out to a makeup artist, which obviously I think is fabulous. But many of us ladies don’t have time, know where to go, etc. So here are a few at-home tips for making the most of your makeup for a photo. HAVE A SLIGHTLY HEAVIER HAND THAN NORMAL.

Use a little more blush, a little more bronzer, a little more eyeliner. False lashes are your best friend. Definition is key in a photo. Use a more bold blush like Charlotte Tilbury Cheek to Chic Blush in Love is the Drug ($40). Create definition and fake a sunkissed glow by bronzing with Amorepacific Color Illuminating Compact ($50). If you usually use a lighter tone/color in your eyeliner, for photos use a black brown or a black like Charlotte Tilbury Rock n Kohl liner in Barbarella Brown or Bedroom Black ($27). Often our everyday makeup just might look washed out in a photo. And you are not washed out in person, remember that. You are a goddess. EYEBROWS.

Let me repeat, eyebrows. Nothing frames your eyes like a great brow. And trust me, as a blonde, we are not all gifted with great brows naturally. Luckily for us, we can fake it til we make it. Anastasia Beverly Hills makes some of my favorite products. They have full brow kits with stencils (which is how I learned), various sized pencils, powder, pomade, you name it. ($18-$65). She is the OG of brows.

PRIME AND SET.

This is such a key to makeup longevity. Both may seem like “just an extra step.” However, if you’ve gone with them and also gone without them, you know what I mean when I say they matter! Primers can help smooth out your skin, allowing makeup to glide on more beautifully. My current obsession is the Dior Airflash Radiance Mist Primer ($50). Setting sprays are your final step after all the makeup is applied. They help lock down your makeup, while melding together all of the products to create a seamless effect. Many these days are multitaskers by providing hydration and or antioxidants. I really love the YSL Makeup Setting Spray ($34). I always have a few bottles of MAC Prep & Prime Fix+ as well. I love when they do limited bottles and fun scents! ($27) Bottom line, enhance the right areas, create definition, relax and say cheese! Try and be comfortable with the fact that while you may be wearing a little more makeup than you do on an average day, it’s only so that all of your awesomeness can be captured. Don’t reinvent the wheel. Don’t try bright blue eyeshadow if you don’t normally wear bright blue eyeshadow. Think of the camera as someone needing glasses. Poor thing can’t see very well. You have to help a little. Show it who is the boss. Buffy is a Nashville native and a Beauty Stylist at Nordstrom Green Hills. Find her at Instagram.com/beauty _buff615.

From Grief to Gratefulness: The Story of Brett’s Barn

The Boyers were like any family – excited for their new addition – but before their daughter was even born, they were informed there would be some medical challenges in their future. This is their story – their story of joy and triumph – their story of how a promise turned into a mission that took their grief and turned it into gratefulness. That gratefulness lives on today, gratefulness for the time they had with their daughter and how her life continues to be celebrated by helping others. T E L L U S A B O U T B R E T T A N D YO U R S TO RY.

Our daughter Brett was our first born, a very prayed for, and a very long-awaited arrival. We found out prenatally that she had Down Syndrome (DS) as well as a congenital heart defect (CHD). Her heart defect was very common among people with DS and has a 97% success rate by surgical repair. Unfortunately, we fell in the 3%. During her seven months of life, we spent a total of 125 days inpatient at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt University. W H AT G AV E YOU THE IDE A OF BR E T T ’S B A R N A S A WAY TO MEMORIALIZE HER?

Actually, Brett’s Barn was all her Aunt Caroline Bryan’s idea. Caroline promised Brett a white pony right after she was born, and after we lost Brett, Caroline was presented with an opportunity to rescue a little white pony on their farm and the wheels started turning. We now have almost 20 rescue animals at Brett’s Barn and it has been the most wonderful place of comfort and respite for all of our family. It has made the saying “who rescued who here” very true in our family.

WHAT IS YOUR HOPE FOR THE FOUNDATION?

Our goal for the Brett Boyer Foundation is to improve the world of CHD – from diagnosis to treatment, from therapies to research. We want to improve the lives of the children and families fighting CHD. DS did not take Brett from us – CHD did. We hope to celebrate DS and all the joy and awareness it brought to our family, through helping to fund research. Our hope is that the foundation’s involvement will help improve the life of a family that receives a CHD diagnosis.

We have had some perfect situations where friends with DS, as well as, some with complex medical diagnoses came out and spent time at the barn. It has brought us so much joy! Since the animals are rescues, we have to make sure it’s not only safe for children to be around the animals, but also safe for our animals. We have to ensure they are acclimated to their new environment. On days where it all works out, we are able to see the JOY these animals bring to children and their families – it’s then that it confirms that we’re doing the right thing by putting ourselves out there in our vulnerable time of grief. This is where the healing has been for us. Brett’s Barn is on private property, so it is not open to the public now, but we have dreams for it to be one day.

They were ever present through Brett’s surgeries, and beyond supportive as we have mourned her. Caroline is on our board, and they both support the foundation and all it entails. I would say it’s okay to be scared of what you don’t know just yet. But I promise you that you have hit the lottery with a DS diagnosis. This kid will be the joy of your family and soon there will be a joy, love, and inspiration in your heart and home that has been missing your whole life. As far as a congenital heart disease diagnosis? I would encourage them to find a group of parents who have navigated these waters before. Tennessee is so fortunate to have Monroe Carell Jr. and their cardiology team. And Williamson County is so fortunate to have so many resources like High Hopes Development Center for all therapy needs. There is such great community support here! W H AT A R E THE BIGGE S T INSPIR ATIONS TO YOU TODAY ?

Brett has inspired me to make the most of every day I’m given. For every day I’m here, I know God has given me an opportunity to help someone. My Brett accomplished more in her 7 months of life than most do in 90 years. She taught me that the span of a life does not determine the impact. WHAT A R E YOU MOS T GR ATEFUL FOR?

I am so grateful for the opportunity to give back to the children fighting CHD and to support research that can improve their quality of life. I’m honored to now have so many friends who have DS and are brightening the world. Safety 101:

Best Practices for Botox and Dermal Fillers

Botox and dermal fillers are the most popular minimally invasive procedures year after year. A total of 7.23 million Botox procedures were performed in 2017 alone, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). While Botox and dermal fillers aren’t as invasive or intense as plastic surgery, if you’ve never had injectables before, you may wonder exactly how it works. Specifically, you may be curious about how safe it is and what precautions to take. We know how important it is to trust those providing you with aesthetic solutions, and we know you don’t want to trust your skin’s health to just anyone. Along with the rise of dermal fillers has come a surge in complications – to the point the U.K. government recently launched a campaign to educate the public about the risks of being injected by anyone but a trained medical professional. A seasoned injector can spot immediate problems to resolve them.

In the U.S., the FDA lists the potential side effects and has several recommendations for safely getting dermal fillers. The most common side effects include bruising, redness, swelling, pain and itching. But more serious but less common effects can occur: • infections • lumps and bumps • discoloration or change in pigmentation These are treatable but may result in scarring in some cases. However, with any alteration to the body, the FDA warns that rare but serious risks could include: •

Scarring, blurred vision, partial vision loss, and blindness if the dermal filler is inadvertently injected into a blood vessel. It is recommended that health care providers take care to avoid injection into blood vessels (especially around the forehead, nose and eye area) for these reasons.

educated, experienced and knowledgeable but don’t choose your injector based off of the number of followers they have. Do your homework! Remember, it doesn’t matter how many years an injector has been injecting, it matters how many procedures they do per day! An injector can have a 15 year history but only inject three patients a week! This is different from a nurse who injects 20 patients per day on injectables only. This is the type of homework you need to do on your provider. Just because a provider is a dermatologist, plastic surgeon, nurse practitioner or RN doesn’t mean that they inject all day every day or know what they are doing. One last tip, a long waiting period to get in to see an injector means this person has a large following and that happens for a reason; they are good,” says Haley.

“This knowledge isn’t meant to scare anyone who is considering dermal filler injection; however, it is to inform you of all possible, yet remote, issues. Choosing a seasoned injector who can identify problems is one of the safest ways to be injected,” says Haley Wood, an injection specialist, board certified nurse practitioner, and the founder of The Look Facial Aesthetics. “You need to know that you’re going to somebody who can identify a problem early – and not only that, knows exactly how to treat a complication quickly. There are blood vessels all over the face, therefore it’s imperative understand facial anatomy. If a filler is accidentally injected into a vessel, the skin around that vessel can be affected. There is a product called Hylenex that can be injected into the The bottom line is skin to dissolve the filler, which allows blood flow to return to the skin.” your health is one of Do your homework on your provider. “The rise in injectable procedures also means a rise in those who offer and inject these products. the most important investments you can make, and it shouldn’t be trusted to just anyone.

The bottom line is your health is one of the most important investments you can make, and it shouldn’t be trusted to just anyone. Not only has Haley treated over 15,000 patients, she’s also trained thousands of people on how to most effectively and safely administer injectables.

Haley is board certified by both the National Certification Corporation and the Plastic Surgery Nurses Certification Board. She’s a national trainer for Allergan, Galderma and P.A.L.E.T.T.E Resources. She’s on the Advisory Board for Allergan, Neurotoxins and Dermal Fillers and a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgery Nurses. Her main goal is your safety. The FDA admonishes to always see “a licensed health care provider who uses properly labeled, sealed vials for treatments. You also can ask to confirm that you are receiving an FDA-approved filler. And never get injectable fillers from unlicensed providers or in nonmedical settings like hotels or private homes.” Bottom line: don’t settle for anyone but the best.
