. W y e l a H From the Editor Finally – Fall! After the year we've had, nothing is more comforting than cooler temperatures, the leaves turning gorgeous shades of red, yellow and brown, and the promise of cozy sweaters and warm hands around mugs of hot apple cider.

SkinTyte is also part of the Laser and Light specialties and targets the dermis layer with heat. If you are experiencing sagging, loss of elasticity, or overall wrinkling of the skin, SkinTyte may be right for you!

In this issue of The Look magazine, we take you on a tour of 10 bucket list items you can do safely with your family this fall. With Covid still lingering, safety remains a priority, not only in our personal lives, but at our practice as well.

MOXI is the laser side of our laser and light treatments. It deposits gentle pulses of laser energy into the skin to have controlled damage. This allows the body to do what it does naturally: remove the damaged skin cells where the pigment and signs of aging are held. Most patients see fresher, rejuvenated skin after their first treatment!

When you visit The Look for a consultation or procedure, you can be assured that your comfort is our priority. We have so many new options for our patients that we are excited about, including our brand new laser and light treatments. The Sciton mJOULE platform is revolutionizing skin care. It offers a non-invasive and effective anti-aging treatment for all skin types from head to toe. Since there are no cuts or other invasive procedures performed during treatment, downtime is minimal. The powerful pulsed light-based technology also won’t irritate your skin. Come in on your lunch break and go back to work with skin that looks healthier and younger.

And finally, ThermaScan works to target the sebaceous glands that cause oil production resulting in acne. By targeting these glands with a non invasive laser technique, the oil reproduction is lessened, therefore preventing new acne. Our patients are already seeing tremendous results from this and all our laser and light treatments. Call today to schedule a consultation to see which treatment is right for you. We are so looking forward to seeing you. Please enjoy this issue with our compliments. It's packed with articles to help you look and feel your best. You are so amazing! Potentially the Most Epic Version of “Something Borrowed” The royals don’t just wear any old wedding dress or jewelry, and Princess Beatrice’s wedding earlier this year — during an unprecedented pandemic, no less — was no exception. For the wedding (which took place at Windsor Castle), Princess Beatrice wore a tiara she dating back to the 19th century, as it was originally a necklace given to Queen Mary by Queen Victoria. Queen Mary turned it into a tiara — and Queen Elizabeth II even wore it at her own wedding ceremony. Plus, Princess Beatrice’s dress was also a re-creation of a dress her grandmother had worn in the past. Now that’s a hand-medown any princess (official or not) would be proud to wear.

Send a Smile from Dolly Parton Who’s more inspiring than America’s smiley, blonde songbird sweetheart, Dolly Parton? The star’s newest venture is yet another way to bring smiles to people’s faces (and mailboxes): greeting cards. American Greetings recently signed a deal with Dolly for greeting cards that will sell exclusively at Walmart. So whether you need to encourage a coworker who’s workin’ “9 to 5” or tell your darling how you can’t wait to visit “Islands in the Stream” with them, chances are Dolly will have the perfect card for you. “These days everything is all social media — but don't you just love going to the mailbox, getting a card that has your name on it, opening it up and it says something special?” Dolly says. “It touches your heart, and hopefully my cards will always touch your heart.”

Forget Bending It Like Beckham — Nail It Like Natalie

When you want something done right, you have to do it yourself — and that’s just what a group of women are doing now in the world of soccer. The National Women’s Soccer League recently announced an investment group led by actress Natalie Portman has been awarded the rights to a professional women’s soccer team in Los Angeles set to begin play in 2022. Joining Portman is technology venture capitalist Kara Nortman, media and gaming entrepreneur Julie Uhrman, and tech entrepreneur and venture capitalist Alexis Ohanian (Serena Williams’ husband) — not to mention a host of other powerful women and allies, including soccer star Abby Wambach, actor America Ferrera, and many more.

‘Clueless’ Almost Wasn’t Made? As If! (No, But Really) The one-liners, the music, the CLOTHES — it’s hard to imagine a world without ‘Clueless.’ But, alas, it’s true! In a recent interview, director Amy Heckerling details how they had to shop the script around for a long time before anyone agreed to make the movie. “It was pretty much, ‘No no no no,’” she says. “It’s kind of like when you read it, I don’t think people understood the humor.” Eventually, Paramount agreed to take it on, and the rest if ‘90s history.

Miss Benson’s Beetle by Rachel Joyce Who doesn’t love an adventure with her girlfriends? In Miss Benson’s Beetle, that’s what Margery Benson gets when she least expects it. Set in 1950 London, the story follows Margery, a spinster schoolteacher, as she sets out on an expedition in search of her childhood obsession: an insect that may or may not exist—the golden beetle of New Caledonia. She hires the fun-loving Enid Pretty, and off they go on the journey of a lifetime. This exciting adventure explores something we can all relate to: the extraordinary power of female friendships.

Cameron Diaz Opens Up about Life as a New Mom

IMAGE DAVID SHANKBONE | WIKIPEDIA

At the beginning of the year, Cameron Diaz and her rocker husband, Benji Madden, announced they had a new daughter, Raddix. Since then, they’ve slipped into the usual new-parent life of early bedtimes, “Baby Shark” and a nighttime glass of wine (for mommy and daddy, of course). But Diaz wouldn’t have any of it any other way. “In the last seven months, I’ve entered the best phase of my life: motherhood!” she said in a recent interview. “So it’s been all about my home and family.”

Bigger Love by John Legend John Legend has done it again, with yet another album of love songs that are like a balm for the ears and heart. The singer’s trademark butter-smooth vocals and bopping backing tracks make for a great album to throw on while driving around town or as the background music for a dinner party. Legend combines the spirit of doo-wop with a modern funk twist — just when we can use that sort of uplifting audio bear hug the most.

Have You Been Eating Your Feelings?

Chickpea, Beet and Citrus Salad:

Life in lockdown has disrupted many of us on multiple levels. What was once known as the ‘The Freshman 15’ has now become the ‘Quarantine 15’. Based on 2020 Food & Health Survey, more than 8 in 10 Americans have altered their food habits as a result, of the COVID-19 pandemic. Can you relate? High levels of stress, feelings of uncertainty and helpless can lead to using food to feed our emotions. Here are some simple tips to help you create a better environment for a healthier you: • Take a break outside for some fresh air and sunshine, natural source of vitamin D. When vitamin D levels are low, the hormone that helps regulate your appetite becomes imbalanced, and people may feel hungry all the time, no matter how much you eat. • With many working from home. Adjust your surroundings! The proximity of your office to your kitchen can lead to more snacking. Every time you walk by your kitchen, what do you see? Out-of-sight, out-of-mind. Try swapping out that candy or cookie jar with a bowl of fruit. • Keep easy ready-to- go salads on hand to make your weekday lunches easier. • Finally, starting your day with an attitude of gratitude can make a BIG difference!

Style Swaps

I believe that versatility and flexibility are the golden keys to owning the perfect wardrobe. Now, more than ever, we need clothes that work for and not against us. You may go from teaching your kids at the dining table, to a video call with the CEO, to having distanced cocktails with girlfriends. We need flexible fashion that can adapt to our constantly changing life demands. There are certain pieces in a wardrobe that I call “style swaps.” They’re items that can effortlessly swap out for one another in order to elevate or relax your look. Check out these four swaps to level up or down when you need them. SWAP 1: LEGGINGS TO JOGGERS

Sweatshirt : Madeworn / Sweater: Alexa Chung

Working from home, I know it’s tempting to wear AMANDA SEARS leggings all the time. They’re stretchy and comfy, but also deceptive. Their snuggly lies whisper that we will be just as productive as when wearing “real” pants, but I’m suspect of their intentions! To level up, how about trying a jogger? These days they’re made in everything from soft denim to leather and are equally as comfortable. Sporty and casual, when paired back with a cashmere sweater and city sneakers, joggers feel elevated yet extremely practical. Or take a look at the next swap to dress them down. S WA P 2: S WE AT SHIRT TO S WE ATER

Many of our favorite athleisure pieces have gotten upgrades over the past few years and this includes sweatshirts! Look for details like subtle ruffles, chic graphics or interesting fabric dye techniques, this isn’t your Dad’s Hanes sweatshirt! To take it a step further, swap up for a sweater. A cashmere or wool blend is just as cozy as fleece and feels more polished. SWAP 3: TEE TO BLOUSE

Tee: Paige / Blouse: Alice and Olivia

This style swap isn’t really so much about the item itself, but fabrication. A solid or graphic cotton tee feels casual and relaxed, while a silky tee, blouse or shell raises the bar simply from the formal nuances of the fabric. You can get a variety of combos when pairing this swap with the layering pieces in swap #4 too! SWAP 4: CARDIGAN TO BL A ZER

You already know this one right? These layering pieces offer practically infinite possibilities! Need to bring your professional A-game? Wear a polished blazer and silk tee or blouse. Casual cool? Blazer and graphic tee. Swapping out a cardigan for a blazer feels even more relaxed because a cardigan lacks the more rigid structure of the jacket. Regardless of dressing up or down, a layering piece always feels thoughtful. Cardigan: Vince / Blazer: Veronica Beard

GOOD IDEAS

With the cooler, crisp weather coming, I can’t help but think of more neutral tones. Don’t confuse neutral with boring! Neutrals can actually be quite exciting.

Complexion:

A fresh-faced glowy, dewy look is alway going to be in style. Highlighters for fall can take on a more fleshy tone instead of an icy tone. Try Hourglass Ambient Lighting Palette ($64) or Chanel Baume Essentiel ($45).

Eyes:

Liner is big and back, and it seems anything goes. From white to black and in between, you can’t go wrong. My favorite liquid liner is Lancome Grandiose liner ($32), which comes in a variety of colors. Try Matte Saphir for a great blue. Another winner from Lancome is the Crayon Khol liner in Blanc ($26) in your waterline for an eye opening effect. I think the most exciting eye trend for fall is blue. The Cle De Peau Eye Color Quad in #312 Blue Lagoon ($80 with case) not only has multiple shades of blue, but also a great brown.

Lips:

Gloss is back baby! Not that it ever left me, and I’m not sure how this correlates with a mask, but nonetheless....it’s back! Lancome has brought back their beloved Juicy Tubes ($20). Lip color usually trades in bright colors for deeper autumnal shades for fall. A classic red and the perfect nude are always in there as well. Fall 2020 tells you to put away your matte lips, no matter the shade. Try Hourglass Lip Oil ($49) in At Night (brick red) or Icon (classic red). For a perfect nude lip, there will never be anything better than Tom Ford Lip Colors ($55). It’s pricey but worth it. A couple of shades to consider are Pink Dusk, Spanish Pink and Indian Rose. The shift in the weather also can warrant a shift in your fragrance. Give Tom Ford Lost Cherry ($72-$450) a try. It’s sweet and warm all at the same time. It’s not if you will receive compliments, it’s when. And bonus, there is a “matching” lipstick of the very same name, Lost Cherry, that is one of my favorites. Embrace and enjoy the change of season!

Confessions of an Injector: 5 Misconceptions We Hear Almost Daily Aesthetic injectors inject Botox and FDA-approved fillers into problem areas on the face and neck. Even though the injections produce little to no side effects and are relatively pain-free, this doesn’t stop patients from being nervous because an “injection” means exactly that. Explaining that tiny needles are involved in injection treatment is only one of the misconceptions certified aesthetics injectors face daily. We thought it would be good to share some of the common misconceptions and ideas we commonly hear in our profession. If you have thought or said one of these, know you’re not alone! We are here to put your mind at ease and educate you on the safest ways to look your best and achieve your goals. Here are a few of our “confessions.” Enjoy!

Botox and Fillers are Not the Same Thing Dermal fillers are different than Botox/Dysport injections. Both help improve the appearance of wrinkles and give your face a more youthful, relaxed look, but fillers are designed to plump and smooth — not prevent the muscles from contracting — and are used around the nose to the mouth, lips, cheeks, temples, chin and even hands. You may need both types of injections to achieve your goals as well as other complementary treatments. Each of these works together for better results.

No, You Won't Get a Marshmallow Face Most patients are convinced when they book an appointment for treatment that it’ll only take one tiny needle to erase crow’s feet and wrinkles on their face and neck. When they see the small tray with 3-5 needles, panic typically sets in. What clients are most worried about is not a fear of needles but they’re scared their face will be noticeably puffy. They don’t believe the puffiness will be a result of the needles but that too much filler is being injected. However, it does take 5 syringes of filler to equal a teaspoon of volume! We usually start with 1-2 syringes of filler in the beginning because we take a slow, conservative approach. So no, the result won’t be a “marshmallow” face. Instead, clients will notice their lines and wrinkles are dramatically less visible.

Fillers Can't Make Flat Lips Look Like Kim K’s Clients might want lips like Kim K’s, but it’s not possible for everyone. Genetics plays a role in what can be accomplished with fillers. For example, if your lips are thin, flat or both, it may rquire a surgical lip lift with a plastic surgeon to give you that specific look. Even then, there’s no guarantee the results will be what you want. Fillers can temporarily plump up thin and flat lips, but they will not be as full as Kim K’s. It’s also important to listen to the advice of the certified cosmetic nurse, instead of shopping around for one willing try. Not only is this dangerous health-wise, it can also leave you temporarily or even permanently disfigured.

“Clients that are afraid they’ll look 'unnatural' will be amazed and thrilled with the results.”

FE ATUR E S

A Natural Look is Not ‘Overdone’ Botox and fillers will not leave you looking fake or “plastic.” Botox and Dysport typicallhy last 3-4 months versus fillers which can last up to a year an half. The injected fillers help to plump up the skin, erasing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. One injection will only take a few years off your appearance, giving you a more youthful look. Clients that are afraid they’ll look “unnatural” will be amazed and thrilled with the results.

Fillers Aren't Necessary for Every Wrinkle You are never too young to start a skincare and Botox regimen. We call this "prejuvenation." Fillers can be used to plump lips and give a boost to cheeks and chin even at an early age. The new Moxi laser treatment is perfect for the 20-30 year old who wants to prejuvenation to prevent early aging all the way up to the 60 year old who wants to retexturize, boost collagen and reverse the signs of sun damage. At The Look, our certified and experienced professionals are here to answer any of your questions about fillers. We would LOVE to chat with you. Making Time for You: Self-Care in the Time of Covid Covid-19 has affected everyone’s life. Suddenly, people find themselves working from their couch while simultaneously trying to keep up with their children’s homeschooling. Since it’s impossible to add hours to the day, something usually gets left out. For most women, and even guys, this means that there’s rarely time for any type of self-care. You might be stuck at the house and feeling overwhelmed with all of the new responsibilities but this doesn’t mean that you can’t carve out some time for yourself. Here are a few ways you can practice self-care during a pandemic.

5 Ways to Practice Self-Care During Covid-19

You don’t have to leave the house to practice self-care. It can be done in the safety and privacy of your home.

01

GET PLENTY OF SLEEP

03

You don’t have to leave the house to start or indulge in a hobby. Gardening, crafting, quilting, etc. are all great ways to indulge your creative instincts. Making time for a hobby not only allows you to do something you enjoy, but it’s also a great way to relieve stress.

If you’re only used to grabbing a few hours a night, here are a few tips to get you started.

Stress not only wreaks havoc on your complexion, but it can also be detrimental to your physical health. Taking a few minutes every day to spend on a hobby is one of the best ways to relieve stress.

Have a set bedtime and stick to it. Don’t lie in bed waiting to fall asleep with the t.v. on. It should be off when you get into bed.

04

Wearing a sleep mask can help you relax and drift off. S TAY H Y D R AT ED

Drinking plenty of water is essential for reasons other than quenching your thirst. It regulates body temperature, lubricates joints, improves organ function and replenishes skin cells. Hydrated skin looks younger, has more elasticity and fewer visible wrinkles.

DON’T FORGET ABOUT SKINCARE

Just because you’re at home and the only people you see are close family doesn’t mean you should forego skincare. First of all, you will be going out in public again. Another reason is that it always feels good to spend a little time taking care of yourself. Even if it’s just 5 minutes with an exfoliator.

Leave smartphones and other mobile devices turned off. If you can’t leave your phone in another room, make sure that the screen is black. Blue light disrupts sleep.

02

INDULGE IN A HOBBY

Adults, on average, require 7 – 9 hours of sleep at night to wake up feeling alert and refreshed. There are also health benefits associated with sleep that include reduced facial and eye puffiness. Getting a good night’s rest also relieves stress that can cause worry and frown lines.

05

ENJOY N AT UR E , E V EN IN YOUR B ACK YA R D

Spending time outside is associated with wellbeing and health. If you can’t get to a park, enjoy your yard. If you’re a gardener, spend more time with your plants or consider picking up the hobby. You can also just relax outdoors in a chair or swinging hammock.

COVID is disrupting lives but you can still practice self-care. Taking time for yourself is just as important for your health as it is for skin and complexion.

First Aid Skin Care: How to Fix Your Most Persistent Problems Healthy skin is naturally beautiful, even if there are a few lines and wrinkles. When it’s dewy and even-toned, wrinkles are less visible, but it’s not easy to keep your skin healthy and glowing.

Skin will be visibly healthier and brighter, even if you’ve spent years "worshipping" the sun. Some of the potent ingredients include Vitamin C, Kojic and salicylic acid, along with arbutin and green tea.

Dry patches and rosacea can leave skin red and irritated, long-term sun exposure can leave you with freckles and dark spots on your nose, cheeks and forehead. Then there’s also the pollutants that cause your skin to look dull.

GLOSS COMPLETE

Thankfully, you can find products that can safely fix your most persistent problems leaving you with smooth, bright skin that is healthy and beautiful.

Nicotinyl trichloroacetamide is one of the primary ingredients. The retinoid is gentle on your skin while helping to improve cell turnover to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Vitamins C and E brighten skin tone, along with ferulic acid ester.

Fix Persistent Problems with These Skin Care Products

You can minimize wrinkles and get a healthy glow with this powerful cream.Gloss Complete not only retextures your skin but also brightens it.

The fragrance-free cream is formulated to be gentle on all skin types while being effective at restoring healthy, beautiful skin. TINTED BB CREAM

Whether you have dry skin, dark spots or a dull complexion, there’s a product that will help. E XFOLI ATING P OLISH

Brighten up dull skin and smooth out uneven skin tone with this exfoliating polish. Named one of the top six exfoliators by Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab, it contains magnesium crystals that remove dead skins while also “polishing” your complexion. Uneven skin tone looks smoother. Even redness caused by rosacea can be calmed and smoothed away. Dark spots are minimized and your complexion will look brighter. Your skin will have a healthier glow after one use. KOJI PADS

It’s not always possible to stay out of the sun, even when you know how damaging it can be for your complexion. These Koji pads will minimize the effects the sun can have on your skin. Each pad contains a blend of ingredients designed to brighten skin tone, along with several natural antioxidants that help with cell rejuvenation.

Dry skin can be difficult to take care of. Some moisturizers are too heavy to wear during the day. Instead of healthy, dewy skin, your complexion looks and feels oily. The Look’s Tinted BB cream can be the first-aid skincare your complexion needs. The light tint evens out skin tone and minimizes other imperfections, while also moisturizing your skin. Since the cream contains zinc oxides and micronized titanium it also works as a sunscreen. For best results, it is recommended that you apply the crème every few hours when you’re out in the sun.

Beautiful skin is healthy skin and you can get it at any age. If you have questions about skin care or want help creating a skincare routine, the experts at The Look are here to help.

GENTRY ’S FA R M FOR K IDS

Located in Middle Tennessee, Gentry’s Farm has become a tradition for families both in and out of the area. The wide-open space ensures that social distancing will never be a problem, while still providing activities everyone will enjoy. Spend time working your way out of the corn maze or stop by to pick a pumpkin and enjoy a picnic at one of the tables located close by. The farm is budget-friendly, though hours do vary. It’s recommended that you check first before planning a visit. 02

Not too far outside of Nashville is Radnor Lake State Park. Along with fishing and boating on the lake, the park also boasts one of the state’s best fall leaves displays. When the native trees start to turn colors, it’s a spectacular sight. One that is only made better by taking a family picture surrounded by the yellow, red and gold fall leaves.

Drive-in movie theaters were quickly becoming a "thing of the past" but now these iconic places are coming back. One example is the Bourbon Drive-In located in Paris, Kentucky. If this is too far of a drive, chances are there’s one closer to you. 07

04

PICK AND CARVE A PUMPKIN

There isn’t a shortage of places to pick up a pumpkin. You can visit a local fall farm or garden center if picking it off the vine isn’t important. Carving one or several pumpkins together as a family is a great tradition to start if you haven’t already. Best of all, pumpkins are relatively inexpensive. When you’re finished carving the jack-o-lanterns use them to decorate your porch. You can add baskets of colored leaves and ornamental squash to complete the fall theme. 05

While it might not be a good idea to get a large group together in the fall, you can still invite your family or a few close friends to a backyard bonfire. You can make smores, listen to music, and just enjoy being together outside.

Not far from Paris, KY is the Land Between The Lakes. The large park boasts plenty of outdoor activities that include wildlife watching. From the safety and comfort of your vehicle, you can drive a 3.5-mile loop through the Elk & Bison Prairie. If you want to see the herds active, plan on going in the morning or around sunset. While you’re visiting Land Between the Lakes, don’t forget to watch for the native bald eagles. You can make the drive yourself or book a personal tour. 09

GO GEOCACHING

With 170,000 acres, the Land Between The Lakes is the perfect place for geocaching. You don’t even need to bring and hide caches, there are already over one hundred waiting to be found. If you’re not familiar with geocaching, you’re going on a treasure hunt. Using a GPS-enabled device you’ll follow the clues until you locate the hidden cache. Once you find it, sign the log, remove a small trinket and replace it with one of your own. Your token can be anything from a smooth pebble to a glass bead or bird feather, etc.

GO APPLE PICKING

Along with pumpkins and colored leaves, nothing signals the start of fall like picking ripe apples. Between Cynthiana and Paris, KY, you’ll find Reed Valley Orchid. There is plenty of space to avoid bumping into others. You can enjoy strolling down the nature trails and picking apples in the orchard. There are also seasonal berries you can add to your basket. Bring a picnic or purchase one at the on-site country store. This is a great way to spend time with family outdoors.

Even though many of the activities you used to look forward to in the fall are canceled this doesn’t mean you still can’t have fun. There are plenty of activities to enjoy that will get you outside.
