CHOOSING A MAJOR By Samira Awad
Choosing a major can be stress-inducing and difficult since it is an important decision that could mark your life path. Many students end up changing their majors and, according to some polls, 61% of college graduates would change their majors if they could go back – usually because they realize at mid-career that they don’t like what they chose. So, before choosing a major, consider the things you like and if you can see yourself doing them in the future. It also helps to take into consideration the following things:
E CIENC S R E UT COMP
CROP SCIENCE
Y GEOLOG CRIMINOL OGY E CIENC S Y R T POUL WILDLIFE ECOLOGY
FORESTR Y
BRO ADC AST ING
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.
Strengths and weaknesses Salary expectations Employment rates Your major is not necessarily your career If you see yourself working in that field What alumni say about the major Don’t overthink earnings
APPAREL DESIGN OGY L O P HRO T N A
ART DIGITAL
SCRE EN A RTS
The most important thing to consider are your hobbies and abilities. Some of us, from a very young age, can identify whether we like to do certain activities. For example, some students with degrees in studio art have been painting or drawing since a very young age. Other students, with degrees in business, liked having small business since they were in high school. These are just examples and not everybody can identify their interests this early. But if you can, then you should use it in your favor. FRESHMAN GUIDE 2021

Now let’s expand a bit more as we try to help you find the right career path for you. As we know, there is a popular “myth” about having left brain/right brain personality. It states that the left and right hemispheres of your brain rule polarizing functions within your personality. If you have a stronger left side, you’re more analytical. If you have a stronger right side, on the other hand, you are more likely to be creative. Many people are predominantly left-brained or right-brained, and we have recommendations below for them. But what if you’re both creative and analytical? We’ve got you covered as well. Read on for our recommendations.
ANALY T ICAL
CREAT IV E
It is believed that the analytical side of the brain performs tasks that have to do with logic such as science and mathematics. If you did well in highschool courses that required critical thinking, this might apply to you. The important thing is if you actually enjoyed these classes and if you see yourself working in something related to that field in the future. Consider whether these characteristics match your personality:
If you’re more visual and intuitive and constantly have creative ideas and thoughts, you might have a creative personality. Being creative not only includes knowing how to draw and paint, but also includes activities that require you to think outside of the box. The right hemisphere of the brain is responsible for cognitive functions such as processing visual shapes, patterns and emotions. Consider whether these characteristics match your personality:
• • • •
8
Linear thinking Sequencing Reading and writing Thinking in words
• • • • •
Intuition Rhythm Emotions Imagination Holistic thinking

ANALYTICAL And here are some interesting and perhaps lesser-known majors that may appeal to people with analytical minds:

•Information Technology •Materials Chemistry •Natural Resource Ecology •Philosophy •Polymers •Poultry Science •Soil Science •Wildlife Ecology

CREATIVE If you are more attracted to an artistic or performance-based career, consider these options at LSU:
INTERESTING MAJORS •Art History •Apparel Design •Arts Administration •Brass Instruments •Broadcasting •Ceramics •Creative Writing •Digital Advertising
FRESHMAN GUIDE 2021
•Digital Art •Film and Television •Graphic Design •Interior Design •Landscape Architecture •Liberal Arts •Literature •Organ (Music)
11
BOTH SIDES For these students, the question is: How can I choose a career path if I like being creative and analytical at the same time?
The answer is simple. You have two options: Find a major that involves both so you can have the best of both worlds. Or start looking for minors. There is no correct answer on what is right and wrong while choosing a major. There is only what you want to do in the future and what your ambitions are.

Easy Dorm Meals
By Emily Poole
Living in a dorm on campus is an exciting experience that will give you a chance to meet new people and get out of your comfort zone. Dorm life is different from living with your parents, and it can take some time to adjust. Eating and cooking in a dorm takes a little creativity, since LSU’s dorms don’t allow appliances with open heating elements. When you’re sick of eating cafeteria food and takeout, here are a few easy recipes you can make in your dorm with LSU-approved kitchen appliances.

Air Fryer Avocado Toast I know avocado toast has a bad reputation, but it’s one of my favorite quick breakfasts. Since LSU’s dorms don’t allow toasters, you can use an air fryer to toast your bread.
Ingredients • • • •
Bread Avocado Tomato Seasonings of your choice (I use salt, red pepper flakes, sesame seeds, minced onion, fresh cilantro, and a little lemon juice)
Directions • Set air fryer to 400° and put your bread in for 2-3 minutes. • While your bread is toasting, mash up the avocado with a fork and slice the tomato. • When the bread reaches your preferred level of toastiness, spread the avocado on, then add the tomato slices and seasonings.

A collection of helpful advice to the class of 2025 from the graduating class of 2021
Starting college is an exciting time, but it can also be pretty intimidating as it is a huge transition from high school. Campus is big, there are more people than you could possibly count, and some are on their own for the very first time. Because college life can be so hard to navigate, we reached out to this year’s graduating class to share their words of wisdom with you.
“
Don’t wait until you’re a senior to start doing what you want! I thought I had to wait until I was older to get involved, but that is not the case! Do what you want! Everyone is happy to have you there:)

Don’t put anything before your mental health. Your grades will suffer way more if you’re mentally exhausted and unwell. Make sure to give yourself free time to do what you enjoy, your gpa is not more important than you.
“
“
Do not be afraid to reach out for help concerning your mental health. You are not alone. There are professors and other people who care about you and are willing to help. Also, don’t waste your time with relationships that aren’t going anywhere: both romantic and platonic.

- Keep extra snacks in your bag, there will be days you’re running around and won’t have time for a break to run and get something. Always have something to eat on you. - Utilize the resources LSU has to offer: genesis tutoring, the mental health center, etc. There are a bunch of amazing on campus resources. - Find the balance between work and socializing: this is one of the hardest things I’ve struggled with in college. Make sure not to become a workaholic and not see your friends, but also make sure not to slack off too much and procrastinate till the last minute. - Keep in check with your mental health. Take time to vent to friends / do things you enjoy
“

Never be afraid to change your mind. In what you’re studying, in love, in work, whatever it is. I think people get stuck in what they thought they were going to end up doing or they think it’s too late to change it up. I don’t think it’s ever too late. Yes, it can be scary to take a step in a different direction. But it’s way easier to get used to a little, initial change than to regret staying with something you hate or are uncomfortable with later down the road.

Don’t forget to slow down and enjoy this time in your life. You learn so much about yourself in college and you’re constantly evolving as a person. It’s important to pause sometimes and just appreciate the journey.
Enjoy your time in college while it lasts and do what you want to do. Don’t bother trying to appease other people, especially those who don’t have your best interest in mind.
