“ What is the best
thing about LSU? ” Malorie Nguyen
The Mag reached out to students on campus with the question, “What is the best thing about LSU?” We got the inside scoop on their favorite things about LSU and here is what they had to say about the campus, student life, and so much more.
“The best thing about LSU is Patrick F. Taylor Hall. It has some of the best study spots. The coolest labs, Panera Bread, and it’s home to the engineering departments.” -Hamood Qureshi
“The best part about LSU is our live tiger on campus. Visiting Mike is especially therapeutic when I have had a stressful week and just need to decompress.” -Amelia Lambert
“The best part about LSU is the greek life on campus. Greek life has helped LSU feel like a second home. It has really given me a chance to make new friends and step outside of my comfort zone.” -Quinn Farnet
BEST OF CAMPUS 2022
“Being a native of Baton Rouge, my favorite part about LSU is how they embrace Louisiana’s culture by giving it to their students. I especially liked the Jambalaya Festival this year!” -Marcus Heinse
“The best part about LSU is the campus. LSU’s architecture is so unique because each building is very distinct, inside and out. It’s also cool to be walking throughout parts of campus and know that almost a century ago, there was students just like us walking the very same places. ” -Madaleine Alessi 7

Visiting Mike LSU is Mike the Tiger’s neighborhood, and we’re just living in it. Mike VII was donated to LSU in 2017 from a sanctuary in Florida. He’s the latest live mascot to grace campus since the tradition began with Mike I in 1936. Stop by Mike’s 15,000-square-foot habitat to say hi and Geaux Tigers. BEST OF CAMPUS 2022
Swinging in the Sculpture Garden If you’re walking through campus, swing by the Sculpture Garden, tucked behind the College of Art and Design near the Quad. Check out the artwork and embrace your inner kid on the swingset. Bring a friend to swing side-by-side or take a few minutes to yourself to close your eyes and let the stress of the day slip away as you feel the breeze on your face. 9
| AROUND CAMPUS
Sitting in the Quad
Walking Around the LSU Lakes Today, you can jog, bike or walk your dog around the six lakes surrounding campus. But did you know the “Great Lakes” of Baton Rouge have an origin story from the Great Depression? With Baton Rouge facing some of the worst unemployment in the state, President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s WPA hired 900 men to transform the Old Perkins Swamp into the lakes the LSU community knows and loves.
10
There’s no better place to sit and people watch than the heart of campus. You never know who you’ll find in the Quad — from friends passing through to the ocarina guy playing a tune. Rebel Wilson, Charles Melton and ESPN College Gameday have all graced the concrete walkways of the Quad. We can’t guarantee you’ll find a celebrity or exciting event, but on any given day, you can find a shady bench to study on or just sit and relax near Dodson Fountain.

Picnicking on the Parade Grounds Enjoy the sunshine and green grass out on the Parade Ground. Bring some beach towels and have a picnic lunch. Watch the clouds. Toss around a football or volleyball. Lose track of time and let the Memorial Tower chimes remind you of the hour.
Going to the UREC It’s no secret that exercising is good for your health and well-being. It reduces stress and stimulates endorphins. Opportunities to get active are near limitless at the UREC. Try your hand at rock climbing on the 35-foot climbing wall. Run on the indoor track or kick back and float around the lazy river outside. You can even play Pac-Man and pinball in the new arcade area.
Watching the Sunset on the Levee When the sun sinks down into the water of the Mississippi River, it can look like a storybook scene. The levee offers the perfect vantage point to watch the sun set on campus. You can bike, walk, run or sit in the grass with the cows as the sky paints itself orange, pink, and maybe even purple and gold.

Trends on the Rise . . .
The Greatest Fashion of 2021 Brianna Wesselhoff
Want to be more stylish and upgrade your everyday look? No problem! Here are your top 2021 trends on the rise, courtesy of Blu Spero clothing – the hottest trends to make your look go from basic to chic. Keep reading to learn more!
Chain Necklaces
From chunky to thin, chain necklaces are an easy way to spice up your look. Make a statement with a single, detailed chain necklace, or layer several chains of different lengths. No matter who you are, chain necklaces are a classic accent for your look.
Crop Tops For all shapes and sizes, crop tops are the way to go. Crop tops are as popular as ever, coming in a variety of necklines and materials that you can dress up or down depending on your mood. No matter where you look, you’ll be able to find a style that feels both comfy and empowering.
High Waisted Pants
Wide-Brimmed Hats For a chic addition of spice in your outfit, a wide brim hat is essential. Whether it’s when you’re in the cooler months of the year and want a warmer option, or you’re in the summer wanting to block the sun from your eyes, these hats provide protection for all – and add a stable, eye attracting, piece in your look!
Chunky Boots Tired of wearing your sneakers everywhere? Want a more classy, but comfortable look? Chunky boots are for you. They’re not so high you can’t walk, but they definitely add a little height to your everyday stance. Just by using basic colors, they can pull your whole look together.
For a comfier look that’s also form-flattering, slip into some high-waisted pants. From skinny to straight-leg or even flare, highwaisted jeans draw attention to your waistline and give a leg-lengthening effect. Plus, high-waisted pants pair perfectly with crop tops.

You Spoke and We Listened . . .
Here are your Campus Favorites Ava Borskey Everybody’s got an opinion. And we listened to yours. From academics and athletics to media and entertainment, we asked the LSU community to name the bests of campus life. We began taking nominations in September through an online form posted on The Mag’s Instagram and at www.lsureveille.com/themag. We gathered the submissions and narrowed the list to the top five nominees in each of the 91 categories. To determine the winners, we posted an online poll where students, faculty and staff could pick their favorite from the five choices in each category’s. By the end of November, the votes were in. We tallied them up and got to work on this issue. Whether you’re wondering what to eat for lunch, where to find good study spots or which LSU meme account to follow, we’ve got you covered. It’s the best issue of the year — you told us so yourselves. Flip the page to find out the rest of the bests and see how your votes stacked up with the most popular opinions on campus.

Meet Doug Draper Ava Borskey
Doug Draper has traveled to 32 countries and lived in 13 states. His career has taken him across the world, and he’s finishing it out as a public relations instructor at LSU’s Manship School of Mass Communication. Interestingly enough, he never planned any of it. “All the best things that have happened to me have been these accidental Doug Draper at Big Bend things,” Draper said. A Utah native, Draper studied journalism at Brigham Young University. He was passionate about student media, but he had an Air Force scholarship and planned to become a pilot — until some trouble with ear pain made flying an unlikely reality. In a five-minute phone call, Draper’s career in the Air Force shifted to public affairs. Through his career in the Air Force and beyond, Draper put his writing skills to good use in public relations. He spent Christmas in Thule, Greenland, with journalist David
Hartman and represented Mike Ditka and the Chicago Bears during “The Super Bowl Shuffle” craze. One of his favorite accomplishments was starting recycling programs at national parks while working for Dow Chemical.
“To me, that’s the real joy and benefit of teaching is seeing students take things that I’ve given them, things I’ve taught them, apply it in the real world and succeed,” Draper said. “If they’re not succeeding, I’m not succeeding.”
Draper said he goes into every “That’s what I like about PR,” Draper semester learning as much as he said. “I never imagined it would be can about teaching and reaching that much fun, where you can see that students. you’ve made a difference in the world.” “Happy and confident students Today, Draper makes a difference by outperform sad and discouraged passing on his years of knowledge students, so every class I try to make to the next generation of PR it fun and interesting,” Draper said. professionals.

When he’s not in the classroom, you might find Draper playing pickleball or searching for a 5K to run. Draper has won a 5K in every age group in which he’s participated. He wrote a book, “Mad Dad, Fun Dad.”
Doug’s Dad Jokes A tradition started in his MC 2010 “Media Writing” class, Draper shares a “dad joke of the day.” Here’s some of his favorites:
He loves traveling and taking photographs of the places he visits. Draper and his wife, Linda, run a travel blog entitled Ms. Arla. The name of the blog references the states the couple focuses their travels on — Mississippi, Arkansas and Louisiana — and their traveling companion, a puppet named Ms. Arla Boudreaux.
Did you know that dogs can’t operate an MRI machine? Only cats can. A woman in labor shouted, “Shouldn’t! Wouldn’t! Couldn’t! Didn’t! Can’t!” “Don’t worry,” the doctor said. “Those are only contractions.”
When he looks to the future, Draper hopes to keep teaching at LSU. Beyond that he said, who knows?
I told my doctor that I broke my arm in two places. He warned me to stop going to those places.
“Sometimes the surprises in life are the best things,” Draper said. “I’m looking for the next surprise.” Doug Draper at Poverty Point
