What is Your Favorite Spot for Patio Season? Spring has sprung – one of the most favorite seasons of the year! Many of us enjoy spending time outdoors when the weather is nice. A patio is the perfect place to relax in an outdoor setting. There are some cool patio hangouts in our area where you can gather with family or friends or just unwind alone. We asked several students on campus to share their favorite patio hangouts with us. You might want to check them out during this nice weather!

Lafayette There’s something about Lafayette that just screams culture. From all the boudin places to the “Courir de Mardi Gras” every year, Lafayette is smack in the middle of Cajun Country and – and makes it known. Lafayette has so much to offer, including The Zoo of Acadiana, Champagne’s Swamp Tours and Downtown Alive, an event that includes music groups, art and many other things for a weekly occurrence.

Clark’s Creek &Tunica Hills Feeling outdoorsy? You’re in luck. Just one hour and seven minutes away from campus is a fan-favorite hiking hub. These two hiking spots are located no more than 30 minutes from each other, which makes them both doable in one day. Tunica Hills is a rugged terrain with gorgeous views and cliffs. Clark’s Creek is equally as beautiful, but also has over 50 waterfalls. The best times to go on these hikes are a day or two after heavy rainfall, when the waterfalls are flowing nicely and feel great after hiking in the sun. There is no better bonding experience than heping your friends navigate nature, so take a trip anytime you would like. The parks are open 24/7, and it only takes a few dollars of donation! There is plenty of blue skies and trees to look at while jamming out with your friends on the drive.

Easiest Pets to Take Care Of

Featuring LSU Hilltop Arboretum Nicholas Frewin Looking to decorate your dorm with plant life but don’t have a green thumb? No worries. To help, The Mag worked with LSU’s Hilltop Arboretum to find plants for students who have no idea where to start. Colin Nelson, the meadow coordinator at Hilltop, recommended four plants that students should be able to grow in their dorm rooms with ease.

28

These plants will help filter the air in your room and produce oxygen, which can help in making your dorm room feel fresher. Growing indoors plants also has another benefit, Nelson said. “It’s good for your mental health” he said. “It gives you a sense of duty and responsibility. It’s not as time consuming as a pet but it still relies on you for its life. Having plants gives you something to take care of.”

FOCUS |

Epipremnum Epipremnum, known more commonly as golden pothos or devil’s ivy, is one of the most common household plants in the world, mostly because of the ease at which it can be grown. Golden pothos is native to the island of Moorea, and it can bring that tropical feeling right into your dorm room. This plant is a vine that can grow up to 30 feet long and can be allowed to hang from baskets or trail along your walls and window frames.

Snake Plant Dracaena trifasciata, or the snake plant. It sports stiff leaves from a few inches to six feet tall and is the perfect interior decoration for students looking to add foliage to dorm rooms. Snake plants are one of the most common houseplants because they are simple to take care of. They can survive, and thrive, in almost any level of light, but will see more growth if allowed more sunlight. Recommended to beginner gardeners because of their difficulty to kill, snake plants only need to be watered when the soil is dry, which can differ depending on the season. You’ll have to water the plant roughly every two weeks in summer and roughly every two months during winter.

SPRING LIVING GUIDE 2022

29

| FOCUS

Spathiphyllum Spathiphyllum, also known as the peace lily. It requires low light and is usually sized between three and six feet tall. It features dark green leaves that juxtapose nicely with its iconic white leaf bracts that drape around the enveloped flower.

One thing to keep in mind when growing the peace lily is to not to overwater. Don’t simply water the plant on a schedule. Instead, water the plant only if the soil feels dry. How much light you allow your peace lily to receive depends entirely on how you want your plant to look. Peace lilies placed in low light won’t bloom as often as peace lilies that receive moderate sunlight.

Peperomia Peperomia plants come in various colors and textures, allowing you to add color to your foliage collection even without any blooming. These plants don’t grow more than 12 inches tall, making them ideal for students living in dorm rooms with limited space.

30

Natively a tropical plant, peperomia are great indoor plants due to the ease with which they can be grown. Like the other plants featured on this list, peperomia can survive in low sunlight, but if the plant isn’t getting enough light it’ll lose leaves and remaining leaves will lose color.
