RESETTING FOR THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR By: Samira Awad For the past year, school has been very difficult for everyone since most students have presented emotional distress due to COVID 19. It is back to school time now and we need to get ready for this upcoming year. It is very important to take care of yourself and your mental health, the more you plan ahead. The more it will alleviate any worries you may have so you can feel ready to transition from online school to in-person classes. In this article we are going to give you some tips on how to get ready for the new school year and make the most of it with 8 steps you need to follow to start your journey.

12 BACK TO SCHOOL GUIDE 2021

MAGNOLIA PUBLICATIONS

I ISSUE 1313

1. MENTALLY PREPARE This year you are going to have a big transition from online school to in-person classes so it is very important to get mentally prepared for this. Mental health is always important and we should always take care of it. It will take a while to reintegrate back to in-person school and the way of life that surrounds it. You have to understand that everyone struggled this past year and if you didn’t do great, you can put your grades back up with dedication. Don’t be harsh on yourself and set realistic expectations to anticipate the fact that getting into a new and stable groove will take some time. Your whole schedule might shift so you have to take that into consideration and take care of your health by not forgetting to rest and by having full meals. You have to be mentally flexible and ready to adapt to a new dynamic before you settle down into a routine or a something more consistent. Don’t forget to exercise, drink water, go on a walk to feel fresh air, meditate and relax before you start the new school year. You can also get involved in different activities for a serotonin boost.

Finally, don’t forget you need stability during times of change. Try to be present and consistent.

2. SET SPECIFIC GOALS If you want a successful school year, you need to set goals. It is very important to have a list of things you are trying to achieve this year, in that way, it would be much easier to follow the steps to reach that goal. If you know you will most likely struggle with a class, you should plan and study for this class ahead so you can be prepared and ready to take it without knowing what to expect. Don’t get me wrong, it is very difficult to plan ahead for a class especially if you don’t know the format your professor would use for the semester, however, doing a quick research on that class would help tons! It is also very important to have a social life while in college and balance is a key. For example, you should set a goal every time you want to go out by planning your schedule and doing all the assignments you need to do before you leave.

14

Finding time to relax will help you to stay focused and motivated as well as practicing self-care can help with balance in your life. When you take a break, you can usually return to your task with a renewed focus and a fresh perspective. Doing the 50/10 rule will help you tons. This rule consists on doing 50 minutes of school work followed by a 10-minute break. An important goal you need to set is having good study habits. Developing and maintaining good study habits can increase your competence, confidence and self-esteem.

MAGNOLIA PUBLICATIONS

I ISSUE 13

3. PICK YOUR STUDY SPACE Picking a study space is very important to keep you focused and motivated to complete all your school work. Numerous studies have found that the place in which you study affects how you will remember the information. This might work differently for people that enjoy studying in areas like cafes or libraries. However, it’s been proven that studying in public areas distract you way more than doing it from the comfort of your house. Now, this doesn’t mean you should pick your bed as your studying space since you would get sleepy or distracted. If you pick one area to study, your brain will get used to it and it will be much easier to process information. It is usually helpful when this space is in your room, house or somewhere quiet where you know you will not get distracted. You can also decorate your working space so you can feel more motivated. Studying can be very stressful so it’s better if your space is decorated, full of colors or anything that you like so it can keep you motivated. Being comfortable in your working space is a key, which is why regulating the temperature, smells and noises is very important. Looking for natural light is very important since fluorescent light can be very tiring. Working in the dark is not a good choice because it will get you sleepy and you can even damage your sight.

4. SCHOOL SUPPLIES

Having your school supplies ready for the new school year is important. Buying the stuff you need in advance will help you stayed organized and ready to start learning. Most of the time college students think that school supplies are not a must. However, it is very important to have a notebook and pens/pencils to take notes. School supplies tend to sell out pretty quickly so it would be better if you plan on getting them before school starts. Having colorful and decorated school supplies can also help you to stay motivated so you should definitely take that into consideration.

5. balance is key As said before in this article, balance is key for everything, not only for school but for life in general. If you want to have a social life and have fun, you should also be sure to stay focused in school and have good grades. That’s why it is important to have an organized schedule and set goals. This also means that should not be into school 24/7. You need a time to socialize and do things you enjoy doing, Balance in your sleep and meals is also very important. It is understandable that sometimes sleep is not a priority for students since the main goal is completing all of the assignments and passing all the exams. However, if we don’t sleep, our body starts getting tired and won’t function in our favor. This also applies to our meals too, if we don’t eat, we don’t fuel our body properly resulting in an exhausted and sick student.

6. ESTABLISH A ROUTINE Having a routine is essential to have a successful day. Due to COVID and online school your daily routine is probably not the best and now that school is going to be in-person, it is important to have an established routine to stick to. Creating a morning schedule can be very helpful, especially If you have morning classes. Don’t forget that breakfast is a very important meal and you shouldn’t skip it, waking up early to have time to do all your activities on time will help you stay motivated too. Taking time for meal prep is a must in college. As said before, a lot of college students tend to miss meals due to tight schedules, that’s why it is very important to know your times and save a couple of minutes to meal prep or lunch time.

Establishing a bed time and sticking to it is very important. Nothing makes for a productive day like a good night’s sleep. Experts say that a regular adult/student should sleep for 7 to 9 hours to be fully rested so it is crucial for you as an student to get some rest if you want to do good in school. You should also plan ahead the night before to make your day go smoother. It gets easier when you have a list of things to do by the end of the day like laying out your clothes for the next day, having your backpack ready, the assignments you need to finish, etc.

7. MANAGE YOUR DISTRACTIONS

As students, we are always using our phones and laptops for school and even though they are very helpful, they can be a huge distraction for us. That is why it is very important to learn how to manage our time with them. It will help a lot if you put your phone on silent mode and place it at the other end of the room. This way, you won’t be interrupted by phone calls or text messages while you’re studying. You can always check your phone every 30-45 minutes or whenever you take a break. We always get the urge to look at our phones, watch TV or get distracted in general, this can often be overwhelming. This is why taking a deep breath and closing your eyes before you get distracted is very important. If you are able to resist for a couple of times, it would become like a routine for you. Asking your friends and family to not text/call you during study time (unless is an emergency) can be very helpful too.

8. prep courses If you know who your teachers are and you can easily contact them, consider sending an email asking for the class syllabus. Most teachers generally stick to the same schedule each year, so they can give you an idea of what books you might be reading or what concepts you might be working on in the first few weeks of school. If you’re feeling ambitious, you can begin to read ahead or study some of those concepts on your own. This will help lighten your workload later in the semester when you have less time!

Layering clothes gives off the illusion of an outfit that you tried harder on than you really did. Picking A Planner by Shellie Milliron

Your Most Important School Supply The beginning of a school year brings all kinds of opportunities for a fresh start to set yourself up for success. Whether it’s your first semester on campus or you’re beginning your final year before graduation, picking a planner to organize your life is one of the best choices you can make. For some, picking a planner can overwhelm. If you’re anything like me, it’s a tedious task that leaves you spending an hour at Target trying to find the one that’s just. I hope the options I share here will equip you to begin this school year knowing you’re fully prepared to keep track of every assignment, football game, and social gathering in your life.

Standard Planners The first thing that probably comes to mind is a traditional planner, divided by week and month. This type is great for those who value simple structure. Although traditional, they don’t have to be boring! You’ll find this type in various sizes, with different kinds of bindings, in hardcover or soft-cover, and with all kinds of decorations to make the cover unique to you. Another similar type is the goal-oriented planner, also sold under the brand name “Passion Planner”. This planner is undated so you can fill in the dates as needed; while still being incredibly structured. Blanks begin at 6 a.m. and end at 10:30 p.m., so you can plan out your entire day by the hour, helping you to stay on task to complete your entire to-do list by bedtime. Along with the hour-by-hour planning, this type lets you identify both daily and weekly goals in the margins to help you recognize all the tasks you’re completing!

On-The-Go Planners

Creative Planners

Some students struggle with traditional planners due to their active, sporadic lifestyles where having something as large as a notebook would not be ideal. If that’s you, then a pocket planner may be more suitable to your needs. Pocket planners are still typically set in a weekly and monthly orientation, though the space is much smaller. This type fits well in a purse or pocket and can help those who need to track dates from day to day.

Bullet journaling has become one of the most popular methods of planning. Although it can be a little overwhelming for some, others enjoy the creative freedom it unleashes to help them fully realize their schedule and responsibilities. Many people who create bullet journal planners find traditional planners too restricting, so the little dotted pages, along with the Micron pens, Zebra Midliners; and endless amounts of Washi Tape, become an open opportunity to design a calendar view conducive to the inner workings of their own minds.

Another style of on-the-go planners that has gained traction in the last few years is the undated tear-away planner. This type comes in both daily and weekly options, and it’s been found to be especially useful for people with ADHD. Given its nature as an undated piece of paper with structured divisions to fill out, it helps you to identify your schedule and priorities for the day. It even has a place to insert meals so you remember to eat! And, because each day’s schedule is a singular sheet of paper that can be ripped away and taken with you, your plans will never get closed into a notebook and forgotten.

Big + Bold Planners

Sometimes the need for a monthly calendar view is more important than a daily schedule, which is when a large wall or desk calendar comes in handy. With its simple monthly view, wall and desk calendars are great for remembering important events, as well as helping to plan with an entire 30 – or 31 – days in mind. As an added plus, this kind of planner becomes an element of decor in your dorm room or apartment space. It’s a great way to let everyone who lives around you know all the most important details of your life.
