Student Spotlight

Pierce Hull LSU STUDENT • MAJOR: Sports Administration

Pierce Hull had been managing a basketball team since his freshman year of high school. “I couldn’t see myself not doing it,” Hull said. So, he took the initiative to continue working as a basketball manager at LSU. The summer before his freshman year as a Tiger, Hull googled the LSU athletic

department and sent some emails. He introduced himself and talked about his experience managing a team. He had some of the high school coaches he worked with send over letters of recommendation. “I was kind of nervous,” Hull said. “Just because, I do want to do this.” After a series of Zoom interviews and one in-person meeting, he got the job. Hull, a rising sophomore studying sports administration, knew working as a student manager for the LSU men’s

basketball team would look great on his resume. It would also help him meet a lot of people within LSU, including some of the SEC’s biggest basketball stars, like Darius Days and Xavier Pinson. “Getting used to being around, like, star athletes all day and kind of having to normalize it a little bit,” Hull said. “That was a little hard at the beginning.” For a normal day of practice, Hull got to the gym an hour early to set up. As the team arrived and warmed up, Hull assisted wherever he was needed. He LSUREVEILLE.COM/THEMAG | FALL 2022 |

held the blocking pad for players to practice rebounding and boxing out. He fed the team basketballs during drills. Practice officially ended after every player made 20 free throws, but Hull stayed afterward to work individually with some of the players. On an average day he’d leave the gym around 8 p.m., after cleaning and locking up the facility.

“I loved the group of managers,” Hull said. “We were a super tight knit group. I still talk to all of them, like, every day.”

“That locker room probably has 200 pairs of shoes in it for like 15 people,” Hull said. “I’d say that’s probably the craziest thing I’ve ever seen.”

As an out-of-state student originally from Houston, Texas, Hull said finding a good core group of people is one of his biggest pieces of advice for incoming freshmen — that and staying on top of your schoolwork. Depending on the day, Hull found himself at the PMAC as early as 4 a.m. or as late as 2 a.m.

But now, Hull said, all those crazy details are just “stuff.” “It’s hard to explain,” he said. “Being around it kind of helps you be more familiar with it and take out the ‘Oh, this is bigger than me’ type of thing.”

Hull’s view from the student manager’s box at the top of the PMAC.

To get it all done, Hull completed his homework immediately after each class ended. Hull said the system worked for him, but if he had to do it all over again, he’d do a little more mental planning in advance. Other than that, there isn’t much he’d change. “If there’s something that you see you’re interested in, like, worst thing that can happen is you don’t end up liking it,” Hull

said. “Might as well go out and try to see how it is.” Hull said his time managing the men’s basketball team was a highlight of his year, and he feels his experience has prepared him for his future in sports admin. “It makes the dream seem a little more attainable,” Hull said.

The student managers of LSU’s men’s basketball team gather on the Dale Brown Court in the PMAC after the Tigers beat Alabama 80-77 in overtime in the last home game of the 2021-2022 season.

| LSUREVEILLE.COM/THEMAG | FALL 2022

That last question was a big one for Mallory Luckett, an incoming LSU freshman from Jonesboro, Arkansas. “Being out of state, I’m not going with any of my friends,” Luckett said. “None of my friends are going to LSU, so I have to make brand new ones.”

Rather than wait until she arrived on campus, Luckett started her search for new friends online. She’d heard about college groups on social media and decided to look for one that fit her needs. That’s when she came across the LSU Class of 2026 group on Facebook. The LSU Class of 2026 Facebook group is a private group with nearly

Cover Story 2,000 members. Although the page says, “LSU Class of 2026 (Official),” it is not affiliated with LSU. The group is run by Humans of University, a website that features university life themed content. Humans of University said they start the groups based on requests by students. “Many schools actually don’t create these Class of XXXX groups, so it’s hard for students to get to know each other, especially incoming high school students,”

24

| LSUREVEILLE.COM/THEMAG | FALL 2022

a senior editor from Humans of University wrote in an email. “That is the main reason we created the groups.” Despite the message at the top of the Facebook page, students do not have to subscribe or pay to join the LSU Class of 2026 group. Humans of University said the enter by request nature of the group is a way to deter spam accounts and others with no relationship to the university. Once inside the group, members can connect with incoming students,

current students and parents of students. Members can make their own posts to the Facebook page and like and comment on others’ posts. Luckett said posting to the page felt a little strange at first. “I didn’t know if I was putting the right thing or if people were going to reach out to me,” Luckett said. “It was very nerve wracking.” In the end, Luckett decided to type up an introduction post.

She scrolled through others’ posts and reached out to them through the contact information they provided. “I was just basically adding everybody and trying to be friends with everybody,” Luckett said. “I think it’s just trial and error because a lot of people that I reached out to didn’t respond

back to me, but I kept trying. And I’m glad I did because that’s where I found my roommate,” she added.

The about page of the LSU Class of 2026 Humans of University group says it is “the hub for firstyear life at the university.”

Luckett and her roommate began talking on Snapchat. They’ve gotten to know each other by messaging back and forth. Luckett said sharing Snapchat and Instagram handles are a good way to connect with others in the group. Luckett said about 15 people added her on Snapchat or followed her on Instagram after her post.

And like the central part of a wheel, this Facebook group has several spokes radiating from it. While students direct others to their personal Snapchats and Instagrams, some share links to other messaging apps, like GroupMe and Patio. These virtual communities are not limited to Facebook, either. A quick search on any social media platform will turn up several options. Kaleijah Ross, an incoming freshman originally from Vacherie, Louisiana, utilizes LSU pages on Instagram, like

@blacklsu26, a page that connects minority students from the class of ’25 and ’26. Even though Ross graduated from East Ascension High School, 26 miles away from Baton Rouge, she only knew two other students attending LSU. Online communities helped her connect to other incoming freshmen and ultimately find a roommate. “I feel like I got a chance to know my new roommate a little bit

She said many members find roommates while still seniors in high school. Many of the numbered online class groups form years in advance. In addition to finding other people, the groups are also a convenient way to find things. Individuals sell textbooks and

dorm-friendly goods, like mini fridges and headboards equipped with phone chargers. “They were selling it for way cheaper than you can find online, so I suggest people hop on that as well,” Ross said. Ross said she feels activity in the groups has died down a little since most people are already paired with roommates, but the groups are still a convenient way to get last minute questions answered and receive updates

for the fall, as freshmen wait for their first day on campus. “I’m looking forward to meeting a lot of new people,” Ross said. “I’m looking forward to experiencing my time in Death Valley. I’m really excited about everything, ways to become involved at LSU, I’m very excited.”

Tips for Using Online Groups REACH OUT TO OTHERS

Don’t be afraid to message others in the group. Like, comment or react to others’ posts.

FIND A GROUP THAT FITS YOUR NEEDS

Are you an LSU parent looking to connect with other LSU families? There’s a Facebook group especially for you. Are you a minority student? There’s an Instagram page that will help connect you with others. With the right keywords next to LSU in the search bar, you can find an online community tailored to your wants and needs.

32

| LSUREVEILLE.COM/THEMAG | FALL 2022

MAKE A POST

Read the instructions in the bio or about page of the group. Many Facebook groups allow members to post on their own. Instagram pages usually require followers submit posts via direct message. When curating your post, scroll back a few days to get a feel for the norms of the group, see what others are posting and how they’re formatting it.

Provide additional contact information, if you’re comfortable. If your preferred form of communication is Snapchat, leave your username at the bottom of your post. If you’re in a Facebook group but never post there, share your Instagram handle.

KEEP TRYING

Not everyone will respond to your messages. Don’t get discouraged. Join other groups and communities through shared links, like Patio and GroupMe.

JOIN THE GROUP AS SOON AS YOU FIND IT

Don’t be afraid to request to join a private page. Many class groups form years in advance, and many freshmen start their roommate search as soon as they declare their college.

Matthew Perschall LSU STUDENT • JUNIOR • MAJOR: General Business

INSPIRATION FOR THE POSTER I shoot for the LSU Reveille, so I have a ton of random campus images. I saw the call for poster submissions and thought I could make good use of these many photos. I threw all the locations into the shape of a tiger paw because of course. I chose “LSU has a place for you” because of the rhyme and since there are a wide variety of great places on campus. All the pictures are from random article assignments with the Reveille or just from my walks around campus. (There’s also a mixture of film and digital images in the poster).

HOW TO SUBMIT FUTURE SUBMISSIONS?

Preparation STEP 1 Mix the macaroni, water, and salt in a microwaveable mug. STEP 2 Microwave for 2-3 minutes, then stir. STEP 3 Add the milk, cheese, salt, and pepper, then stir. STEP 4 Microwave for another 30 seconds, stir, and garnish with a sprinkle of chives. STEP 5 Enjoy!

TRY THESE OTHER YUMMY MEALS! PEPPERONI PIZZADILLAS

BREAKFAST BURRITO

Prep time: 2 minutes.

Prep time: 2-5 minutes.

Gather Ingredients: 10 flour tortillas (one per pizzadilla), mozzarella cheese, pizza sauce, pepperonis, and olive oil spray (or butter).

Gather Ingredients: 2 large eggs, 2 flour tortillas, 2 slices of cheese or shredded cheese, and pre-made salsa if preferred.

First, place your chosen toppings on half of a flour tortilla, making sure the sauce goes on first and the cheese goes on last. As the cheese melts, it will hold the pizzadilla together. Fold the other half of the tortilla over the fillings and spray the top of the tortilla with a light spray of olive oil. Second, place the pizzadilla onto a microwave safe plate and place into microwave for 30 seconds (or until cheese melted.) Third, take out and enjoy!

38

| LSUREVEILLE.COM/THEMAG | FALL 2022

First, spray a microwave-safe bowl with cooking spray. Second, beat the eggs in a bowl and put into the microwave for 90 seconds until eggs are done. For the best result, stir eggs after every 30 seconds. Third, cut the cooked egg patty in half. Place your egg and a slice of cheese on each tortilla. Roll the tortilla to make burritos. Put in microwave to melt cheese. Fourth, enjoy with salsa!
