'TIS THE SEASON Ah, the holiday season is upon us! That festive time for gathering with family and friends for bountiful feasts, cozy get-togethers, and glittering soirees. The center of all this joyous celebrating will likely be your home—more specifically, your kitchen. The heart and soul of any house, your kitchen feeds more than just hungry stomachs—it prepares the most essential nourishments: zesty banter, hearty laughter, and sweet memories. (But if you need some inspiration for feeding those hungry stomachs, check out the cookbooks I have chosen from some local chefs and, of course, the tried-and-true books we all grew up with.) This special time of year can be full of joy and magic, but—let’s face it—it can add its fair share of stress and chaos too. So this issue of Marin Home celebrates the season with expert tips for holiday entertaining with ease and practical advice for preparing your house for guests.

CALL MARIN ROTO-ROOTER TO FIND OUT If you are planning to purchase a home, having Marin Roto-Rooter do a VIDEO INSPECTION of the underground sewer pipe may be a good idea. The inspection will reveal any flaws with the sewer before you buy and inherit a problem. The cost of repairing or replacing an underground sewer may add up to thousands of dollars making a relatively inexpensive camera inspection a good investment. NEED A SEWER LINE REPLACEMENT? GO TRENCHLESS! Our trenchless pipe replacement virtually eliminates the disruption and mess that digging causes. And it can cost less overall!

HOROSCOPES
LIBRA
SCORPIO
SAGITTARIUS
CAPRICORN
As ever, Libra, balance and harmony are the keys to your happiness. And that goes for your surroundings. You love elegance and glamour, and what better season than fall to bring out the lush bling? Think warm, inviting colors and shiny metal accents when you take on that living room revamp. (Yes, it’s time.) Consider furry pillows, velvet accents, and exotic, fragrant candles. Surround yourself with the bounty of fall luxury!
Okay, Scorpio, we get it. You’re a control freak. (But in a good way!) This fall, ease up on the control, and get your house in relaxation mode for the holidays. No way, you say? Au contraire! We love easy, simple fall decor that goes from one holiday to the next. Think beautiful strands of shells adorned with pinecones, shimmery silver balls, rustic greens, and some twinkly white lights. Hang that swag in your dining room, and move effortlessly through the holiday months without lifting a perfectly manicured finger.
Sag, your vibrant personality, natural curiosity, and love of all things new are the perfect storm for an exotic home freshen-up this season. Why not take that love of travel and rock out your guest bedroom with a bright beaded bedspread, a gorgeous Indian-inspired lamp, and some bamboo side tables? Frame those train tickets you saved from your college trip to Marrakesh; add some amazing brass accents, and some yummy throw pillows; and your houseguests this holiday season will be drifting off to a tryptophan-induced sleep in international style.
Oh sweet, Cap, how you love to see things in black and white. Well guess what? It’s time to step out of the boring part of the color wheel and play! Baby steps, baby! Instead of painting an entire room that amazing peacock blue (which you totally should, duh) start with just one wall. Then, play with lighting. This season calls for low lights— candles, hurricanes, and table lamps in jewel tones can really cozy up your space.

DEAR HE + SHE, We just bought an amazing older house and can’t wait to get started turning it into our dream home. But in terms of timing and budget, that won’t be happening overnight. In the meantime, we have lots of family and friends coming to stay with us for the holidays, and our bathrooms are dated, dark, and depressing. What can we do to update them in the short term so they’re company-ready? Christopher and Jim, Mill Valley, CA
HE SAID Congratulations on the house and an even bigger congratulations on not attempting a bathroom remodel during the holidays! Even though it’s not the biggest room in the house, a bathroom remodel is by far one of the most challenging a homeowner can sign up for. From plumbing to tile to grout, it’s no small undertaking even though it’s a relatively small space. But have no fear. There are lots of upgrades that can be made relatively painlessly and can change the look of your bathrooms dramatically without a dramatic hit to your budget. Hardware—drawer pulls, cabinet knobs, and towel racks— instantly changes the look and feel of any space. And so do mirrors—a fast, affordable fix and an instant, easy upgrade. Lighting fixtures can be relatively easy to switch out too. With so many great options available online, you can turn a mid-century mess into a modern masterpiece with just a click of your mouse. -He

Hey, don’t forget my favorite fix: paint! It’s important to have fun with color especially in small spaces. Lighten things up with a soft white, or make it pop with a bold, vibrant navy. Remember, bathroom paint should be a semi-gloss or satin. Oh, and don’t forget the primer—a tinted primer to be exact. Tinted primers are super important if you’ve chosen a bright, eye-popping color. Not only will your paint go on more evenly, you’ll use less and (even better during the busy holiday months) it’ll take less time! Then, upgrade those baseboards with a crisp white semi-gloss. Add a new rug, throw a clean, crisp white shower curtain and some inexpensive nickel rings onto your existing shower rod, and you’ve gone from dark and depressing to bright and cheerful. -She
DEAR HE + SHE, My bathroom is really small, and I’m considering making some changes to open it up. But I’m stuck with a large, dated vanity. Any ideas? Jayne, San Rafael Solar Energy Since 1984
HE SAID I don’t blame you. Small bathrooms with large cabinets or vanities tend to feel cramped and suffocating. Consider removing the vanity, and replacing it with a sleek, updated pedestal sink. A pedestal sink is a bath fixture that blends the base and the sink together. They’re cute, original, and uniquely stylish, but they require a little more thought in the storage department. (You also might need the help of your favorite plumber to hide the plumbing lines discreetly.) Once you open up the floor, the space will feel less crowded, but now you need to address the storage issue. A wall-mounted medicine cabinet with a mirrored door is a classic way to create storage. Utilize that newly found floor space with a small bookcase or baskets for fresh towels.

SHE SAID Hello? A medicine cabinet isn’t going to solve all your bathroom storage needs! While I love the pedestal sink idea, think beyond baskets for storage. Consider floating shelves or over-the-toilet solutions that leave that precious floor space alone. I mean, isn’t that why you got rid of the vanity in the first place?

Think about mobile storage too: cute metal carts on wheels can be moved in and out of the bathroom and are perfect for hair dryers and cosmetics. And the best part is that they can be easily stored elsewhere when you’re not using them. Also, when solving small-space design challenges, stay away from small, repeating patterns, like on shower curtains or towels. Make the room look bigger by using a simple color palette and one accent color— for instance, a soft gray paint on the walls and towels with a pop of burnt orange in a lamp or small vase. -She

ICONS & INNOVATORS
MARIN JOE’S & THE DELLA SANTINA FAMILY Three generations of the Della Santina family have made Marin Joe’s the go-to gathering place for generations of other Marin County families. text by Kathryn Loosli Pritchett/ photography by Trevor Henley
W
hen Adolph Della Santina opened Marin Joe’s in Corte Madera in 1954, most people thought he was crazy to leave San Francisco. A partner in Original Joe’s in the Marina District, Adolph had decided to branch out by building his own restaurant next to a four-lane highway in the North Bay.
“He built it in this location because the property was available,” says his great-nephew Paul Della Santina, who now owns the restaurant with his brother Ralph. “People thought he was crazy, but he knew something they didn’t. He truly believed that if you put good food on the table, they would come.” And for 61 years that’s just what the Della Santina family has done. Loyal customers come for traditional food like the signature “Joe’s Special” (a ground beef, egg, and spinach hash) inspired by family recipes from Lucca, Italy, made with quality ingredients. “This whole farm-to-table movement is nothing new to us,” says Ralph. The Della Santina brothers began working in the business as kids under the direction of their father, Romano, who had gone into business with his uncle Adolph shortly after Marin
14 FA L L 2 0 1 5 MARIN HOME
Joe’s opened. “Dad just recently passed away, but he was still minding the shop right up until he died,” says Paul. “He’d come in and make sure he couldn’t find a stray spoon or fork in the trash—though sometimes we wondered if he planted them—because he wanted to make sure we weren’t wasting anything and losing profits,” says Ralph. “He kept us on our toes.” Both men credit their father and uncle with instilling a strong work ethic and teaching them how to run a successful business through hands-on experience. “We both started as dishwashers and worked our way up through parking cars and doing prep work in the kitchen,” says Paul. “I worked the line for years.”
Ralph left the family business for 20 years to work at IBM, but when the company wanted him to relocate he decided it was time to come back home. “I was tired of the corporate ‘bull’ and decided to take on the family ‘bull’ instead.”
“THERE’S A FAMILY– NOT A CORPORATE– FEELING HERE”
O
ne of the ways they’ve been able to maintain their place in a much more competitive field of restaurants— “there were only four restaurants between here and San Rafael when Uncle Adolph first opened the place,” says Paul—is by continuing to take an active role in the management of the restaurant. “We make sure that one or the other of us works every shift,” says Ralph. “If someone doesn’t show up, we can plug in anywhere—we know how to do every job in the restaurant. More importantly, people see that we care about what goes on here.” Loyal employees recognize that as well. Many of the servers and staff have been there for decades. “They’re not employees to us; they’re family,” says Paul. “Our dad always told us that if you treat people right, they’ll treat you the same way. We really believe that.” With changing times, the menu at Marin Joe’s has changed slightly—there are more chicken and fish offerings, for example, and when asked whether a recipe is ever altered to appeal to a
lighter, modern palate, Ralph says, “it’s been known to happen.” But most people come to Marin Joe’s because they want something familiar and dependable. It’s a place where you bring your family for special celebrations—birthdays, graduations, weddings, and even memorial services. “For many families we’ve been their living room, dining room, even their mortuary chapel,” says Ralph. “The older generation makes up a good portion of our regulars, but when their kids come to visit they return here because this is where their folks took them when they were growing up.” The brothers talk about chefs from more upscale restaurants coming to Marin Joe’s at the end of the night for a good bowl of minestrone. They talk about it being the kind of place where the bartender has your drink ready when you come in the door, and you can tell the chef to cook the chicken just the way you like it and he’ll know what that means. “There’s a family—not a corporate—feeling here,” says Ralph. “Our grandfather’s generation brought us up in this business—not many people can say that.”

Laurel & Wolf: 10 Ways to Update Your Bathroom over the Weekend
Y
our bathroom serves a variety of functions. It’s the place where you spend hours preparing for a highly anticipated event. It’s the place where you run a hot bath after a long, stressful workday. It might even be the place you retreat to for a minute of silence from the rest of the world. Whether or not you have the time and budget to devote to a floorto-ceiling remodel, your bathroom should be your sanctuary. In just one weekend, easily elevate your bathroom to five-star hotel status with these simple updates.

Replace old light fixtures. Nothing is more important than good lighting when getting ready. With a multitude of options on the market in a wide range of prices, you will be able to find an updated light fixture to match any style. Create a focal point in your bathroom with wall sconces or a luxurious chandelier. Update the faucet. Do you find yourself constantly scrubbing your sink faucet, only to find that it still appears dirty after the next use? This may be a good indicator that it’s time for an upgrade. Why not nix your classic silver faucet and go with a polished brass one? Not only will your bathroom look instantly chic, this finish will also protect against water spots and fingerprints.

Replace old shower curtains. A simple way to revamp your bath is to buy a new shower curtain. Better yet, buy two! Achieve an ultraluxurious look by hanging both shower curtains as if you are styling a window with drapery.
Make a statement with wallpaper. We all know that paint works wonders, but you can give your walls an even bolder facelift with wallpaper. For small spaces such as powder rooms, wallpaper can make a huge impact.

Add some entertainment. While a built-in television may sound pricey, it doesn’t have to be. Mount a small screen to enjoy your favorite shows from the bathtub, or catch the morning news as you prep for the day. It’s the perfect use for those sky-high top shelves.

Replace outdated hardware. This old trick isn’t only for kitchens! Replacing outdated knobs and handles is a simple, yet impactful way to style your space without making permanent changes.
7|
Install storage bins. Does your counter always appear cluttered? If you are lacking in space, add a couple baskets to hold miscellaneous items like extra toilet paper, cleaning supplies, and beauty products. This organizational trick will keep unsightly objects hidden.
8|
Buy a new rug. As with any space, sometimes all you need is a colorful pick-me-up. With the affordability of many bathroom rugs, you can evolve your look whenever you want. Highly absorbent fabrics such as cotton, olefin, and chenille withstand constant use and last longer than other alternatives.
9|
Display decorative towels. Sure, it may sound like a no-brainer, but your bathroom will instantly appear more inviting and puttogether with the inclusion of decorative towels. Lean a vintage ladder against your bathroom wall to achieve a slightly bohemian look.
10|
Give your vanity a facelift. Sometimes a fresh coat of paint is all you need to make a big statement. Opt for calming neutrals or bright, bold colors to add an effortlessly chic feeling to your space. Seventy-two hours may not sound like a lot of time, but you can easily take on a few of these projects during a quiet weekend in. xoxo, Laurel & Wolf

MBA BUILT
MBA BUILT Crescent Builders brings together a dream team and transforms a home from shabby to chic. text by Marin Home Staff
Marin Builders Association (MBA) members are known for their craftsmanship, attention to detail, and stylish and innovative designs. So when MBA members team up on a project, the results are nothing short of stunning. PROJECT SUMMARY All home improvements share a common goal: to transform a house into a home and turn what was once awkward into a place of comfort. Marin Builders Association member Crescent Builders along with architect Mercedes de la Garza led this transformation from what was once a shabby little house with moldy walls into an elevated streamlined modern space with nearly 700 additional square feet. The homeowner wanted a space that was open and airy in the living room and kitchen. All the other spaces they wanted to be cozy but modern. To ensure a more open floor plan yet preserve the bulk of the existing home, they eliminated the unused fireplace at the front entry and lifted the area to bring natural light into the center of the structure. From the kitchen to the bedrooms, this home was completely rejuvenated into a clean, open space with rooms that blend seamlessly into each other.

CHEF’S SPECIAL
HOW TO START PLANNING YOUR DREAM KITCHEN LIKE A PRO The heart of the home has always been the kitchen. It’s where we do life together—where families meet in the morning and reconvene at night; where friends gather and linger over food and cocktails; where memories are made over meals. Two Marin County chefs share their tips and tricks for designing the kind of kitchen that works for feeding a family—or entertaining a crowd.

t’s the kitchen that either sells a house or screams for a gut and remodel. It’s the room most people don’t want to simply live with—they want to love. We talked to two of Marin County’s most beloved chefs, Heidi Krahling of Insalata’s and David Haydon of Il Davide, to find out what makes a welldesigned kitchen. Here, they share their expertise—and their must-haves.
MH: Tell us a little bit about how you like to cook at home, and what makes that different than cooking in a restaurant. HK: I don’t do a lot of cooking at home, but every Monday, my husband enjoys a kick-ass tuna sandwich for lunch. It’s a standing joke about how I am going to make a super new lunch for him to try, and it’s always the same thing. Cooking at home tends to be less elaborate, not a multi-course dramatic event. At the restaurant, we all are cooking for guests for a variety of their family celebrations, milestones, and get-togethers. It’s nice to then bring it home and do the same for your own family. DH: Well, I am a European shopper; I shop for the meal that day. So when I am off, I go to the farmer’s market. In fact, I sometimes go to three stores. I’m in more grocery stores in a day than some people are in a week. I usually cook Italian cuisine without the cream and butter we use in the restaurant. At home, I like good clean food. I don’t have a lot of gadgets in the commercial kitchen at the restaurant, but I do at home. And I’m not plating twenty meals at once at home, so I have some time to play with all my kitchen gadgets. MH: What do you think makes a kitchen a really great cook’s kitchen? HK: For me, it would not be about bells and whistles—not so much about the latest cooking equipment either. It’s about simple but sometimes not-too-obvious things like a stovetop with enough BTUs. Two ovens are nice; uncluttered work surfaces; good design to support the least amount of energy output for maximized production. Good-sized pantry and big drawers with glides to keep things organized. But really, what makes a really great cook’s kitchen is if the cook is happy making luscious food for family and friends in his or her kitchen. DH: First of all, you’ve got to have good space in terms of functionality. I like to go from the range to the counter without hiking across the kitchen. I like refrigeration close to me. And the ingredients have to be close to your cooking area. I really need to have counter space, and a great sink or two. I would like a

“FLOW IS SO INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT IN A KITCHEN. WHEN I CAME INTO MY RESTAURANT HERE TWENTY YEARS AGO, I DESIGNED THE KITCHEN MYSELF, AND IT WAS ALL ABOUT FLOW. EVERYTHING FROM HOW YOU ENTER AND EXIT THE KITCHEN, TO THE FLOW BETWEEN WHERE YOU COOK AND WHERE YOU PLATE, IS KEY TO GOOD FUNCTIONALITY.

sink in the island, where you’re washing your vegetables and doing more prep work, and a sink for washing pots and pans. Sinks are very important to me. MH: You both mentioned functionality in the kitchen. How do you best achieve proper functionality, design-wise? HK: With 40 years of cooking behind me, I talk a lot to the cooks in the kitchen about their time and motion efficiency. Why take twenty steps when you can take ten? Organize the layout of equipment and your small wares so they are easy to access and in arm’s reach. DH: Flow is so incredibly important in a kitchen. When I came into my restaurant here twenty years ago, I designed the kitchen myself, and it was all about flow. Everything from how you enter and exit the kitchen, to the flow between where you cook and where you plate, is key to good functionality. I always pay attention to the height of things, too. You don’t want to hit your hip on the corner of the counter or your head on a giant hood. MH: If you could design your own dream kitchen, what would the materials be, from counters and floors to colors? HK: I am on a concrete floor all day, so a floor with a little give would be nice. I love wood floors, and I have a wood
countertop at home. I like the warmth of wood. I have a FSC [Forest Stewardship Council] mahogany counter, which is beautiful and easy to maintain. As for colors: monochromatic, but with depth qualities like Venetian plaster. Then, I’d have a single crazy-ass pop of color like a persimmon-colored back door. DH: I’d love to keep it as natural as possible: oak plank flooring is really cool—I’m partial to that. As far as granite, I love deep, earth-tone granite. I was cooking in this house in Berkeley, and the owner had brushed granite, which was absolutely gorgeous, and I fell in love with that. I’d have dark wood cabinets. I like cabinets above me and drawers below me. The automatic push closure and opener thing that they have now are ridiculous; I would never get those in my kitchen. But I’d love a good roll-out drawer for pots and pans under the range. MH: Do you have an opinion on the best range for a true cook? HK: Call me crazy, but again, I’d want a gas stove with enough BTUs and an oven that is calibrated and cooks evenly. I think restaurant stoves are 25,000 BTUs, so a stove you can buy that has the highest BTUs would make me happy. I do like the option of convection cooking, too. DH: I cook with Montague big industrial ranges at work, but there’s a Viking Pro 7 series 8-burner that I want. And gas, always gas. A good range is one with a lot of BTUs, 15,00025,000 per burner. MH: What do you think the best ‘extras’ are—not the musthaves, but the nice-to-haves? HK: Lots of sunlight; a great sound system to play music; a big ole walk-in pantry. Ample storage; the ability to have an herb garden or even pots close by the kitchen; a plumbed,

We asked these pros what gadgets they couldn’t live without. Here are a few “kitchen toys” Heidi and David rely on at home.
1
Heidi Krahling 1. Salad spinner.
You gotta keep the greens dry. No wet lettuces.
2. Oven thermometer and meat thermometer. You can check small cuts of meat with the finger test, but I rely on thermometers for whole roasts. Also, ovens can be notoriously out of calibration, so leave a thermometer in the oven and
4
adjust the temperature as needed.
3. Benriner or mandoline. Japanese Benriners are inexpensive and easy to clean. Mandolines are bulkier, but I do love them for julienning and slicing.
4. Sided box grater with small eyelet side. I like the small eyelet for zesting citrus. I use zest in everything from vinaigrettes to relishes and desserts.
5. Kuhn Rikon Swedish peeler.
5
6. Good restaurant-quality aluminum rimmed baking sheets by Lincoln Wear-Ever.
A 13x18-inch fits easily in most home ovens.
7. Dedicated coffee grinder for spices. You gotta toast and grind your
7
spices—kind of a deal-breaker.
8. And a mortar and pestle for blending herbs and spices. 9. Good quality pepper mill. 10. A Vitamix blender if you can afford it.
9
11. The three knives that I reach for are a 4-inch paring, my Japanese Zanmai 8-inch chef’s knife, and a serrated one. Keep them sharp…always, always, always…did you hear me?…always!
12. Microwave (yes, I said it) for simple things like warming a cup of water. I like them for a quick, very short change of temperature. Let’s say if a dish of grains or veggies have been out on the counter too long, a 30-second warm-up keeps the integrity of the food. I really don’t use it for cooking, except maybe my oatmeal in the morning.
13. Water filtration system. It could be as simple as a Brita.
11
14. A big cutting board. I just received a José Regueiro black walnut cutting
14
board. So darn beautiful.
15. Pots and pans. I encourage anyone who spends a fair amount of time cooking to invest in a couple of good pots and pans. I still have my Le Creuset pans from the ’80s and use them all the time. A 10-quart stockpot is good for soups, stocks, and stews. A stainless shell 10-inch skillet with the sloping sides is also one of the most useful pans to have in your kitchen. If you have the room and do some big-batch cooking, an extralarge 14-inch skillet is handy too. For roasting and baking, you’ll need a heavy-duty roasting pan.

DAVID HAYDON 1. My All-Clad D5 brushed stainless steel sauté pans. They’re my workhorses: great quality and low maintenance. Unlike copper-coated pans, they can take a beating and keep heating evenly.
2. Global knives. Lightweight and one piece, they maintain an edge and feel very
3
comfortable in my hands.
3. Vitamix 5200. This is a beast! I have never loved something so much. I use it every day for shakes, purees, and sauces.
4. John Boos cutting board, 30"x24". Got to have a good cutting board. I take
7
this with me when I cook private dinners. Other brands warp and split, but not this one.
5. Hamilton Beach two-speed immersion blender. No need to go expensive; this does the job. It’s great for soups, dressings, aioli, and sauces.
6. KitchenAid 3.5-Cup Food Processor. I use this smaller one most of the time chopping herbs, nuts, and blending pesto, and it’s really easy to clean.
8
7. Surgical forceps. For pulling pin bones from fish, they lock and are narrower than needle-nose pliers.
8. Lello Musso Pola 5030 dessert & gelato maker. Gelato in 20 minutes, are you kidding?
9. Waring Panini Supremo panini grill. I have one of these in my residential kitchen—super heavy duty, maintains a high temp with a swiveling, heavy grooved top that can cook four sandwiches at once. I have three stepchildren; need I say more?
10. Rösle. Anything Rösle! Especially my 9.8-inch cheese wire slicer that adjusts when tightened.
10
1 1. Chiba Turning Slicer. This is a great little gadget, slices paper thin long sheets of vegetables such as daikon, apples, carrots, and potatoes.
13
12. Kuhn Rikon 8-Liter Family-Style Stockpot Pressure Cooker. Short ribs in 20 minutes. This can also hold a 4-pound roast or a whole chicken.
13. Himalayan Square Salt Block. (8”x8”x1.5”) Is this a gadget? Sure it is! I use these all the time for grilling half chickens “Pollo al Mattone” style. If you heat up this large salt block, it is fantastic for searing scallops, tuna, and thin slices of Kobe beef.
14
Freeze it, and use it to serve gelato—when the gelato begins to melt, the salt exudes into the flavors.
14. Microplane Classic Series Zester. Zest lemons, oranges, and limes.
15
15. Inox truffle slicer. November through January is truffle season. We love to slice truffles over eggs, carpaccio, pastas, meats, and scallops. This Inox truffle slicer allows you to control the thinness of this expensive delicacy.

“I THINK A SMALL KITCHEN IS A MORE FUNCTIONAL KITCHEN...
I JUST WANT TO BE EFFICIENT. SO A SMALL KITCHEN, WHERE EVERYTHING IS AT ARM’S LENGTH, IS MY PREFERENCE.
”
- David Haydon

high-end espresso machine; a big farm sink; temperaturecontrolled wine fridge…Heck, now you’ve got me going. DH: I’ll tell you, it’s all about the little things like the countertops, where I’d have little divots to hold your eggs or lemons, so they don’t roll off the counter while you’re cooking. I think pot fillers are great. I’m so used to having one at the restaurant that I’d definitely love to have one at home. What would be really fun would be to have a recessed monitor built into the counter, so you could be looking at recipes while you cook. Outlets are very important—I’d do as many underneath the counter as I could. Having access to knives and fresh towels; that’s what you need everywhere you go in the kitchen. So in the home kitchen, I’d have a magnetic strip and a knife block, too.
MH: Some really big kitchens don’t feel as functional as small kitchens that have a great work triangle, so it’s not necessarily about size, is it? Yet so many renovations are about blowing out walls and expanding kitchens to be the biggest room in the house. Do you think size really matters? HK: It’s not the size; it’s how you personally like to live and entertain. I have a small kitchen, and there really is very little ability to “hang out” while I cook. It seems weirdly dated to have guests in the living room. When it’s warmer outside, that works great for me, since the kitchen opens up so nicely to the garden. I would personally have a big kitchen, but I would keep the footprint where I actually work and prep fairly tight. After working in kitchens for forty years, I want efficiency in movement and not to take a lot of extra steps unnecessarily. That doesn’t mean that it couldn’t be a big kitchen with family and guests around, but there needs to be a separation where there is a bar or counter for sitting and chatting so that they are not crossing over into the cooking space—unless of course they are helping! I think the heart of the home is the kitchen, and the cook is the soul of the house. So family and guests are naturally drawn to the heartbeat of the home. DH: I think a small kitchen is a more functional kitchen. I’m looking now for a new place, and I totally believe whatever space I find, I’m going to keep everything close at hand anyway. If I wound up with a big kitchen, my production area would remain small, from range to refrigeration to prep and plate area—that space would be small. The rest would be
storage. In some houses, the silverware drawer is ten steps from the counter, so in order to get a glass you have to walk away from the sink for it. I just want to be efficient. So a small kitchen, where everything is at arm’s length, is my preference. MH: How important is lighting in a kitchen? What kind of lights would you choose if you were designing your own kitchen? HK: I would like as much natural light as I could have, plus I’d have all dimmers to control the light and increase energy efficiency. DH: Overhead lighting is the way to go—you don’t want shadows on food. I really believe that you eat with your eyes, too, and you want to see and appreciate the food you taste. MH: Do you have an opinion about refrigerators and freezers—big, small, drawers, doors? What would be on your wish list if you could have any one you pleased? HK: I don’t know enough about high-end fridges. But I do like a fridge with the double doors on top and the freezer on the bottom. Seems like I can get into the fridge and organize, clean, and find things better with that kind of configuration. Big ole fridges mean lots more dumb jars and condiments to store. DH: I like a little bit of both—the Sub Zero 48-inch Pro 648 is my dream refrigerator. It’s got a little bit of everything: drawers on the bottom for the freezer, and it come with a glass door on the right. I like that because then I can see everything. Sometimes Sub Zeros reseal and become kind of heavy and hard to open, which can be a problem if you’re in a hurry, which I always am. MH: What advice would you give to people who are starting with a blank slate, or redesigning their own kitchens? What would you tell them not to do, or do, to get the most out of their space? HK: Think about how they like to cook and entertain. Take your budget and square footage and then maximize every bit of space for efficiency of your movement. A kitchen is such a highly personal room in the house. There are some good websites to peruse, so start bookmarking what styles and looks resonate. Numero uno is hiring a contractor and designer you trust. DH: I think function first, then good counter space, and overhead lighting, and no low hoods or automatic soft-close drawers. And a couple of really great sinks.

s your home’s entryway a welcoming space? Does it greet your arrival with a smile and give you a warm, fuzzy hug you as you leave? Although it often gets overlooked in the design process, the energy of this space is not to be taken lightly. 1 MOOD
How does your entry make you feel when you come and go? Is it relaxing and inviting? Or does it stress you out? Your home’s entry sets a mood that affects how you feel each and every day. It’s extremely important to have an entry that buzzes with good vibes. It should be an enjoyable space for you and your guests to pass through. If the mood feels anything less than warm and embracing, then it’s time for a change. Maybe the space is already functional and organized but lacking in personality. In that case, some fresh flowers or a new, colorful rug might do the trick. But maybe it needs more…
2 SPACE Is there enough space for you to come and go? Or does it feel cluttered and crowded? Your entryway may be large, like a true foyer. Or you might have an entry spot of about six square feet. Or, if you’re really lucky, you have been granted a single tiny wall next to your front door. Regardless of the size, this is a space to keep clean and uncluttered. There should always be room for you to comfortably come and go, without having to squish past boxes, tables, and backpacks. Keep it tidy, and only store things in the area that actually fit—so that you can fit, too! A cramped, cluttered entryway is no way to invite yourself into your home.

ORGANIZATION Is there a place for you to put your things? Is there a place for your guests’ things? Your entryway has an organizational job. When you come and go, you need a place to put your “stuff”. You may want a spot to set your shoes or to check your hair and makeup. Your guests need somewhere to put their coats or bags. Skillful organization can make even the smallest entry function beautifully. If you don’t have room for everything in the entry, try to fit in as much as you can (without overcrowding, of course) and move some of the other functions to another space in the home. Black & Brass Numbered Row of Hooks, Pottery Barn
44 FA L L 2 0 1 5 MARIN HOME
4 LIGHTING
Does your entryway have adequate lighting? Do you feel safe when you enter? Can you even see? There’s nothing worse than fumbling for a light to turn on when you come home to a dark house. A properly lit entryway is inviting and safe, so make sure you give your lighting some attention. If you have a large foyer, this is a perfect place for a striking chandelier. If you’re small on space a simple table lamp is perfect. If you’re really small on space, just make sure you have a light switch right near the front door so you get some sort of immediate illumination. Other light options could include recessed lighting and sconces. Add dimmers so that you can control the level of brightness, which also contributes to the mood. Alberto Orb Chandelier & Upbeat Yellow Table Lamp, Currey & Company
5 “ONCE YOU’VE IDENTIFIED THE PROBLEM AREAS, YOU CAN MAKE CHANGES SO THAT YOUR ENTRY WORKS BETTER FOR YOU.”
AUTHENTICITY
Does your entryway feel like you? Is it a good introduction of what’s to come in the rest of the house? Does it make you feel “at home”? This is probably the most important component of your entry. This space needs to welcome your soul. You should be friends with it and feel comfortable in it. Every time you step into your house you should truly feel like you’ve “come home”. You want it to relax you, and invite you and your guests in with an open heart. Be true to yourself in this space and really make it yours.

Heritage Salvage Where Every Sliver Tells a Story text by PJ Bremier / photography by Trevor Henley
I
n Michael “Bug” Deakin’s world, every sliver tells a story. There’s even a story behind his nickname, but he’s not telling that one. Deakin is the owner of Petaluma’s riverside treasure trove known as Heritage Salvage, now in its 15th year, where reclaimed metals, lumber, wood slabs, building and landscape materials, and architectural objects are neatly organized throughout several showrooms and a three-acre working yard as they await their second lives.
What is it about salvage that still keeps Deakin enthused? “Heritage Salvage, the name, says it all,” he says. “I love to hear the stories about when ‘Grandpa built the barn’ or about the home where great pieces came from.” It all started when Deakin, a former movie and special event set builder turned contractor, was building a home designed to look like a centuries-old Tuscan farmhouse. An ad he placed in the local newspaper promising to take down an old barn in exchange for its wood instantly garnered 36 responses. The barn he chose was located on the Sonoma ranch of the late actor Fred MacMurray. Soon, Deakin was tearing down old barns on weekends and storing the wood on his Occidental property, determined to reclaim and re-source the object of his newfound passion. In his 2014 book, Heritage Salvage: Reclaimed Stories (Cameron + Company, $25), Deakin views old growth redwood trees poetically. “These magnificent creatures… the tallest living things on earth…built most of Northern California,” he states. “We used 96 percent of the redwood forest in a mere 150 years.” Deakin thinks society can do better.

And so he is constantly seeking out salvaged wood and lumber and hunts for pieces with great stories. One of the most compelling for him surrounds the wood that once housed the famed Budweiser Clydesdale horses. “It was from old-growth redwood that grew in Sonoma County, got made into water tanks, shipped to St. Louis, then repurposed as framing for the original Clydesdale barn,” he recounts. “After the original Grant's Farm was sold, I brought the wood back home.” He also appreciates the story of elegant alignment when wine tanks, after their use in the winery, find their way back into the wine business. Those from the Rodney Strong Vineyards, for example, were repurposed as a custom table for a Rodney Strong winemaker, numerous bar tabletops for Bistro Aix in San Francisco, and shelves for a Palo Alto wine store. Deakin has materials—collected from his frequent travels and through his favorite suppliers across the country— stashed in warehouses in Ohio and Wisconsin. But it is the Petaluma location where ardent artists, architects, designers, and homeowners seek out authentic, eco-friendly pieces for their work, pieces with a patina and a sense of history.
"THE BIGGEST IMPACT OF HERITAGE SALVAGE IS ON BOTH ENDS OF THE SPECTRUM FROM HOW MANY TREES WE LEAVE STANDING IN THE WOODS TO HOW MUCH MATERIAL WE ARE NOT SENDING TO THE LANDFILL,” HE SAYS. “AND, WE’VE CHANGED THE WAY PEOPLE THINK ABOUT RE-SOURCING"
Some of those pieces currently on hand include fir beams saved from the former barracks of Oakland Army Base; large decorative plaster medallions from the original AAA building in San Francisco, circa 1928; and a set of dramatic interior doorframes from Linden Towers, a former palatial Flood family mansion in Atherton. Deakin figures he moves between 500,000 to 600,000 board feet a year but insists that it doesn’t tell the whole story. “The biggest impact of Heritage Salvage is on both ends of the spectrum from how many trees we leave standing in the woods to how much material we are not sending to the landfill,” he says. “And, we’ve changed the way people think about re-sourcing.” Many of them come to Heritage Salvage for its design/ build services, much of which takes place in the on-site wood and metal workshops.
“A huge part of our business is custom building; we’ve done more than 130 restaurants, bars, taverns, breweries and wineries in the Bay Area,” he says. Most of them are recognizable, too, such as Lagunitas Brewing Company in Petaluma (and Chicago), Wild Goat Bistro in Petaluma, Boca Pizzeria in Novato, The Girl and the Fig in Sonoma, and Hopmonk Taverns in Sebastopol, Sonoma, and Novato. “We say if you can send us a picture or draw it on a bar napkin, we can build it,” he quips. “And we prefer the bar napkin.”
Heritage Salvage is located at 1473 Petaluma Blvd. South in Petaluma. 707-762-6277. Visit them online at heritagesalvage.com and be sure to check out Michael Deakin’s Reclamation Road radio show, which airs Tuesdays from 5:20 to 6 p.m. on KSRO 1350 AM and 103.5 FM.

SPROOS SALON Sproos Salon has been a fixture on San Anselmo Avenue for almost 30 years. Stylists here are ready with stylish haircuts, highlights and color, extensions, and special event and bridal hair. Cyndi Harvard, an expert in color, highlighting, and balayage, co-owns Sproos with master stylist Billy Ewing. Harvard is so phenomenal with color that product giants, Shu Uemura and Kerastase, ask her to teach styling classes across the country or them.
SEASONAL TREAT? Sproos Salon offers several treatments: Brazilian Silk Keratin Smoothing, Keratin Complex Smoothing, and Japanese Straightening. Why not try the Keratin Express Blowout Treatment? It only takes an hour, gives your hair a softer, smoother texture for up to six weeks and you can wash your hair after just 8 hours. Gorgeous on the go! 552 San Anselmo Avenue | San Anselmo, CA 94960 415.457.4900 | sproossalon.com
COOPER ALLEY SALON Clients rave about the cuts and color they get at Cooper Alley. First-timers will too, especially when they find out that their fabulous first cut or color comes at 25 percent off the regular price. Owner Rick Cooper, a stylist for 30 years seamlessly blends the techniques of Vidal Sassoon, where he was trained, with his own take on design for a unique look. Clients also benefit from the highly skilled talents of co-owner Ali Cooper, a color specialist trained at diPietro Todd in San Francisco, who now oversees Cooper Alley’s color department.
SEASONAL TREAT? Be racy—go red! Cooper Alley offers INOA by L’Oreal, an ammonia-free permanent hair color that completely covers gray hair, preserves the hair’s natural protective layer and saves its shine. What’s hot this year? Intense reds and garnet accents. Marin Country Mart 2215 Larkspur Landing Circle | Larkspur, CA 94939 415.461.1146 | cooperalleysalon.com
ATELIER SALON When clients use the words "amazing," "brilliant," and "talented," you know the stylists are the bomb. Praise such as that is the norm for the designers at Atelier Salon where great cuts and color – even balayage - are the norm. They also work their wonders on wigs. Owners Oksana Kosmynina and Dianna Saypahrath are both passionate about design. Kosmynina is a bold designer who likes to push the boundaries of shapes and style, and Saypahrath, an expert in hair and makeup, specializes in color.
SEASONAL TREAT? Try a cut from a junior stylist for $25 or color starting at $35 during “model calls” Tuesdays through Saturdays. You’ll get an affordable look and may find your new favorite stylist. 800 Redwood Highway, Suite 220 | Mill Valley, CA 94941 415.389.8000 | ateliersalon220.com

EDWARD’S SALON Edward’s Salon offers the de rigeur cut, color, and treatment menu of any high-end salon, but insiders know it’s the place to go for elegant updos and sleek blowouts. The pampering doesn’t stop with the beauty services, either. Clients are treated to beverages, fresh fruit, and freshly-baked Otis Spunkmeyer cookies. Edward Goldstein, owner of this eponymous salon, wows his clients by creating soft, natural looking color and cuts while co-owner Jason Murray is known for his high-fashion, but easycare, looks perfectly tailored to his clients’ hair type and texture.
SEASONAL TREAT? The Mommy & Me package allows your daughter, 10 years or younger, to join you in the salon experience. For $20, she can get her hair curled or braided while your hair is blow-dried. It’s a treat she’ll remember. 655 Redwood Highway, Suite 150 | Mill Valley, CA 94941 415.381.1950 | edwardssalon.com
BARBER LANE From fades and buzz cuts to neck trims, straight-razor head shaves and gray blending, Barber Lane does it all seven days a week. Owned by Rick Cooper and Ali Cooper, who also own Cooper Alley, the design duo were trained by two of San Francisco’s top shops, Vidal Sassoon and diPietro Todd.
SEASONAL TREAT? How can you resist Barber Lane’s classic hot-towel shave? Sit back and let the magic happen with a facial razor cut followed by a facial cleanser, massage, and hot-towel wrap. Marin Country Mart 2001 Larkspur Landing Circle | Larkspur, CA 94939 415.419.5260 | barberlane.com
ELEVATIONS MOBILE SALON Recognizing the busy lives of her clients, designer Kelli Reno’s idea of bringing the beauty salon to her clients may be a gamechanger. Everything you want from a salon including highlights, smoothers, and extensions but without the travel time. That’s what sets Elevations Mobile Salon apart.
SEASONAL TREAT? We’d give a gift certificate for the works – cut, shampoo, nails, and makeup – to the busiest person on our list who insists she can’t get away. Who wouldn’t be thrilled to have a salon roll up their driveway? San Rafael | 415.272.0838 | elevationsmobilesalon.com

Perfectly Prepared Local land-use planning expert Diane Henderson of DMH Land Use Planning, regularly shares her expertise with city governments, sits on the Board of Directors of the Marin Builders Association, and was even named San Rafael’s “Citizen of the Year” earlier in 2015. Somehow in the midst of all this she also managed a major kitchen remodel just in time for the holiday season. Here, Diane dishes on her dream-come-true kitchen and her simple recipe for holiday entertaining. interview by Marin Home Staff / photography by Trevor Henley
We know you’re a pro when it comes to planning. What was your strategy in approaching your own kitchen remodel? My home was built in 1930, and I had lived in it nearly 20 years before I remodeled the kitchen. The kitchen was in dire need of replacement, and because I had lived there so long, I had a very good idea about what I wanted the future kitchen to be. I actually completely gutted the old kitchen, removed interior walls, and relocated stairs—it is a completely different kitchen. I think that it really paid to take the time to think about what I wanted and plan accordingly. When you look around your new kitchen, what do you love most, and what would you have done differently? I love the openness of the kitchen and the fact that people can I love the openness of the kitchen and the fact that people can sit at the island and visit with me while I cook. In my old kitchen, there was only one way in and out. Once someone came into the kitchen they were trapped—and usually in my way! I wouldn’t have done anything differently; I absolutely love my kitchen! What’s your most treasured recipe? Cocktails count too! Probably Kahlua cake—I have had the recipe for years, and it’s a delicious chocolate cake. It is very simple to make and a real crowd-pleaser.
Yum! You’re making us hungry! What’s in your refrigerator right now? I keep a well-stocked refrigerator—always chilled wine, cheese, yogurt, and lots of vegetables and fruit. Sounds like you’re always ready to play the hostess. What are your top three must-haves when it comes to entertaining guests during the holiday season? A festively decorated house, and plenty of food and drink. With those three things, all I have to do is open the door and let guests in; the rest is simple. I love the holidays, and I love entertaining; it is the perfect combination for me.
