LIBRA

SCORPIO

SAGITTARIUS

Your love of balance and entertaining comes into full swing over the next few months, Libra. Are you ready? We know, we know. It’s easy to procrastinate, hoping all that work will somehow magically get done by itself, but you can do this. Start now. Pull out your linens and favorite party pieces. Get cracking on your to-do list. Check off your hostess- and holiday-gift lists so that when the party invitations start to roll in, you’ll be ready to roll too.

You sly romantic Scorpio, you. You know no one can resist your charms especially around the cozy holidays. Why not make sure your home reflects your passion? Install dimmers on light switches, put your window treatments on remote, and install a new sound system. And, for good measure, make sure to check your heating system and water heater. No sense wasting all your “hotness” on heating the whole house. And, while you’re at it, hottie, how’s your smoke alarm?

Your love of nature doesn’t stop when summer ends, does it, Sag? Plant bulbs and winter vegetables right now for your own farm-to-table experience, and throw in a few new roses like “Doris Day”, Apricots N’ Cream” or “Best Kept Secret” just for the fun of it.

Don’t forget to bring the outdoors in with you this season. Dress your dining table with a beautiful centerpiece of cut flowers, stack pretty birch logs on the fireplace hearth, put a bold potted plant on the entry porch, and hang a fresh evergreen wreath on your front door. Don’t forget to dangle some mistletoe just inside or you’ll miss out on the best part.

HE SAID SHE SAID

DEAR HE + SHE, We just bought a home in Greenbrae, and as much as we love the home unfortunately the kitchen is a bit drab. What can we do in the short-term, without breaking the bank, to make it a more festive space for the upcoming holidays? HE SAID Hi Cindy, Congratulations on your new home! Making some smart, inexpensive improvements right now can carry you through the holidays and beyond. You didn’t mention the color of the paint in your kitchen, but painting is a fast and easy fix. Often, neutral colors are used to sell a home but now that it’s yours, express your own preferences. Or you can stick with neutral walls, if you want, but add some color to the backs of open shelves or inside a small kitchen office niche. While you’re paint shopping, pick up a brand new doormat and a cheery floor cloth or area rug for the sink area to keep your kitchen floors clean from wet and muddy shoes. Pick holiday colors, celestial blues, or metallic silver or gold for the rug. Almost everyone can expect holiday guests this season, especially those with new homes, so you may need some extra seating. You can get creative here: Keep an eye out for sturdy, but stylish backless stools that can be tucked under your kitchen island or some stacking stools that you can stash in a closet. Or consider a bench that can be repurposed as a coffee or side table. You might even grab some floor cushions for your younger guests.

SHE SAID Hi Cindy, I second that…congratulations on your new home! First of all, I believe in deep cleaning a home from top to bottom once each season. If your new place was sitting on the market for a while, or had a lot of furniture and viewers come in and out, it may benefit from a good scrubbing. Do the job yourself or hire a cleaning service to hit the main hospitality rooms for the holidays, like the kitchen, family room, and powder room. When it comes to decorating, consider your five senses—sight, smell, taste, touch, and hearing—as a starting point. Switch out your regular china and cups for festive holiday ones. They’ll remind you of the upcoming special occasions whenever you reach for a plate for that slice of pumpkin pie or a mug for that steaming hot chocolate or cider. Make your own clove-studded oranges and put them on display them in a pretty jar or bowl. It’s easy—just push in the cloves until the orange is completely covered or simply studded in a sleek pattern. Pin on striped ribbons for an added flounce. They’ll smell wonderful and you can tuck them into drawers after the holidays. Find some wonderful soy candles in cinnamon or pine scents, and let them flicker and lend subtle fragrance to the space. How about your cabinets? They take up valuable real estate in the kitchen. Are they dressed up? Check out local hardware stores for drawer pulls and handles with some bling on them. They will make you happy and earn second glances from guests. Stop in at a nursery and pick up some fragrant bulbs—hyacinths or narcissus, for example—to add beauty to a windowsill. Decorate the cabinet tops with cut branches of backyard trees such as holly, evergreens, or magnolia and weave in miniature lights, French ribbon, and pinecones. If you have extra counter space on your island, assemble an edible still life on a silver tray. Pair candlesticks, some ornaments, a trio of pomegranates or maybe some unshelled nuts and a hand nutcracker nestled on top. And don’t forget to put festive carols on in the background. Whether sentimental or jazz, holiday music will always set a festive tone.

PATTY  GARBARINO  Marin Sanitary Service story and interview by Kathryn Loosli Pritchett photography by Trevor Henley

P

atty Garbarino never thought she’d end up talking trash for a living. But when her father needed help running Marin Sanitary Service, she decided to pitch in.

14  FA L L 2 0 1 4   MARIN HOME

Garbarino remembers as a child watching her grandfather lace up his garbage boots and thinking he must have an important job “because those were really big boots.” She grew up doing odd jobs including working in a veterinary clinic and eventually earned degrees in special education and worked as a guidance counselor helping severely handicapped students find employment. In 1987 when grant money dried up, she found herself looking for other employment while visiting family in Italy and feeling sorry for herself. “I quickly realized that was silly — I knew I’d find something else and soon got an offer to work for a PBS station in Milan,” says Garbarino. Before starting her new job, however, she returned to the Bay Area to wrap things up, and while there her dad offered her a part-time job dealing with the “tsunami” of paperwork that came along with increased regulation of waste hauling.

“NEVER IN MY WILDEST DREAMS DID I THINK ABOUT GOING INTO THE GARBAGE BUSINESS, BUT THAT’S PARTLY BECAUSE I DIDN’T KNOW IT COULD BE SO MUCH FUN.”

“It took me six years to get through the piles of paper lining the walls of his office. There were so many regulations requiring documentation of waste hauling that he couldn’t keep up,” says Garbarino. “Never in my wildest dreams did I think about going into the garbage business, but that’s partly because I didn’t know it would be so much fun.” Garbarino enjoys working in the business because it helps her connect with the local community and because she appreciates her work team. “Yes, I’ve ridden in the trucks and I love my drivers — they’re fabulous, dedicated people,” she says. She also sees beyond the boundaries of her drivers’ routes as she works to reverse the effects of global warming. “Fifteen percent of global warming is attributed to waste,” says Garbarino. “I’ve become a committed advocate for reducing waste.” Garbarino travels to Sacramento several times a month — along with a dozen guys she calls her waste industry “apostles”— to advocate for bills that enable further

composting or encourage new markets for separating waste. They also monitor bills that increase diversion of waste into the landfill. “I like representing the industry even though testifying can be nerve-wracking,” says Garbarino. “I’ve been doing public speaking since high school, but I’ve come to realize that with legislative bodies things aren’t always logical and the outcome is certainly not predictable.” Garbarino is one of the few women working in the industry. She feels comfortable working in a mostly male environment but says “ultimately you have to prove yourself on your own merit and not get too bent out of shape about small slights.” As an example she recalls a time in a corporate meeting when she made a suggestion, which was ignored until later on— when a man suggested the same thing. “I figure if you get the result you’re looking for, that’s ok.” Garbarino owes a great deal to her grandparents and parents for showing how to make a difference in the way>>

ICONS & INNOVATORS you run a business and make a difference in the world. Her father, Joe Garbarino, was recently inducted into the National Recycling Hall of Fame. An early pioneer of recycling, he started the first curbside recycling program as well as the first indoor dump where you could sort efficiently. Today Marin County boasts the highest rate of recycling in the state and the highest per capita in the country. “My grandparents and parents set up such a great legacy,” says Garbarino. “I say I’m just the maintenance generation.” Any regrets that she didn’t stay in Italy all those years ago? “Not at all, especially since I recently realized a 25-yearold dream to buy a house there,” says Garbarino. “I spend several weeks on the sea near Genova sitting on the beach during the day, solving the problems of the world with the old fishermen and working in my cousin’s restaurant at night. It’s a great reprieve every few months but I’m happiest working here. I like our sense of accountability.”

As the holidays approach, Garbarino reminds people to “live as simply as you can — live like your grandparents,” noting that the average person produces 7 pounds of garbage per day today verses 1.48 pounds in 1948. She also suggests recycling your Christmas tree, reusing wrapping paper, and avoiding foil or other treated papers that can’t be recycled.

RECYCLING FACT SHEET METALS • Americans throw away enough aluminum to rebuild our entire commercial fleet of airplanes every three months. • Recycling just one aluminum can saves enough energy to operate a TV for three hours. • You can make 20 recycled aluminum cans with the energy it takes to make one new aluminum can from bauxite ore. • The energy saved each year by steel recycling is equal to the electrical power used by 18 million homes each year. • Every ton of recycled steel saves 2,500 pounds of iron ore, 1,400 pounds of coal, and 120 pounds of limestone.

Marin Sanitary Service (415) 456-2601 • www.marinsanitary.com PAPER • Recycling 1 ton of paper saves 17 trees, 2 barrels of oil, 4,100 kilowatts of energy, 3.2 cubic yards of landfill space, and 60 pounds of air pollution. • If we recycled all of the newspapers printed in the U.S. on a typical Sunday, we would save 550,000 trees—or about 26 million trees per year. • One-third of all trees logged are used for paper production. • Producing 1 ton of paper requires 2-3 times its weight in trees. • Recycling 1 ton of cardboard saves 46 gallons of oil.

GLASS ORGANICS • When food is disposed of in a landfill, it rots and becomes a significant source of methane. • Composting improves soil health and structures; increases drought resistance; and reduces the need for supplemental water, fertilizers, and pesticides. • Food waste is the largest sector of material sent to the landfill. • Recovered wood can be remanufactured into building materials, used in landscaping, or converted into energy.

• Recycling glass instead of making it from silica sand reduces mining waste by 70 percent, water use by 50 percent, and air pollution by 20 percent. • Glass takes more than 1 million years to decompose in our landfills. • Recycling one glass bottle can power a computer for 30 minutes. • Glass can be recycled and remanufactured an infinite amount of times and never wears out.

$

ECONOMY PLASTICS • Each American throws away an average of 100 polystyrene cups each year, and the expected lifetime of each cup is over 500 years. • Americans use some 14 billion plastic shopping bags, an average of 425 bags per person. • Recycling 1 ton of plastic bottles saves the equivalent energy usage of a two-person household for one year.

16  FA L L 2 0 1 4   MARIN HOME

• The recycling and reuse industry employs over 1.1 million people nationwide. • The recycling and reuse industry also generated roughly $12.9 billion in federal, state, and local tax revenue. • Recycling creates six times as many jobs as landfilling. • Americans represent only 4 percent of the world’s population, but generate 30 percent of the world’s garbage.

AT HOME

Holiday Style at Home Two local designers share their decorating traditions and tips text by PJ Bremier / photography by Trevor Henley

H

olidays signal a change. Collectively, we tend to slow down more, stay inside longer, and focus on matters that mean the most to us— traditions, family, friends, and home.

A home that is thoughtfully decorated for the season makes these special occasions even more special. Here, two Marin designers share their family decorating traditions for the holidays and offer tips for yours.

Ann Lo wengar t

Keeping it natural Growing up in a family with a military father who moved frequently and a mother who knew how to set up home quickly, Annie Bowman, owner of Sunrise Home in San Rafael, learned early how to create a pleasant home under a deadline and on a budget. She also learned how to make the holidays special. “My mom always brought out my grandmother’s china and silverware. They weren’t used everyday so we knew they were temporary and celebratory.” Wherever they were living, the family mantel was covered in seasonal greenery, a tradition Bowman upholds in her own Greenbrae home, stringing lights through branches of evergreen or magnolia and tucking in dried fruit and gilt or silvered pinecones. On her front door, she hangs an evergreen wreath enhanced with glued-on pomegranates and sprays of holly and, on a foyer table and mirror, she suspends an angel and twin potted evergreen topiaries or boxwood balls. Bowman creates a round centerpiece for her dining table filled with fragrant greenery, potted blooms, votive candles and mercury glass objects. Instead of color, she brings in “tons and tons of white— white lilies, white tulips, white roses!” she says. And she brings on the shine, too. “This is the season, more than any other time, to use metallic and glistening surfaces, whether it’s a candlestick or a bowl of gleaming orbs,” she says. >>

AT HOME

Here are Annie’s top three tips:

1

“Holiday memories involve all the senses, not just the visual. People forget to think of holiday smells like cinnamon and cider when they are creating a space for the holidays.”

2

“I think less is more. I’d rather see a few well-chosen pieces than lots of kitschy things. If you can only manage two decorating surfaces, choose the mantel and the dining table, and match the shape of the centerpiece to the shape of the table for best effect.”

3

“Decorating for Thanksgiving is basically the same. I switch out objects, plants, and seasonal flowers in favor pumpkins and gourds. The bling level just goes up higher for Christmas.”

Holidays at home, away from home

Ann Lowengart, principal of Ann Lowengart Interiors of San Anselmo fuses her childhood and new traditions into her holiday home. “I have so many good memories of Thanksgiving as a child,” she says, recalling funfilled days spent at a rustic Mexican resort where she and her sister and cousins played tennis and swam in the surf. Christmas dinner was spent at her grandmother’s home where months of polishing silver, ironing linens, housecleaning, and cooking paid off. “Everything was so sparkly clean and beautiful, and there was so much love presented in every single place setting,” Lowengart remembers. “She set the bar so high that she’s a hard act to follow.” These days, Lowengart spends Christmas away with her husband and children, and her sister’s family, at a Southern California resort where they surf nearby. Here, holiday preparations are much simpler. Inside the villa, she decorates their mantel with favorite pieces, hangs stockings over the hearth, and brings out a cherished childhood gift given to her by a friend of her grandmother’s—a handmade, lighted Christmas tree. A quilted skirt, which was a wedding gift, covers the base of the fresh-cut tree. It’s strung with lights and decorated with ornaments, some from her grandmother and others “replacements” purchased for her by her husband when she thought she had lost her heirlooms. “I was so upset,” she says. “Now, I think the ones I love the most are the ones my husband picked out for me.”

Here are Ann’s top three tips:

1

“Use fresh greens in at least one place. The fragrance gets you into the Christmas spirit immediately.”

2 3

“Put out at least one thing that’s old. It gives gravitas to the space and keeps the decorations from looking contrived.” “Use high-quality ribbon, either in bows or elsewhere. A little bit of wired French ribbon elevates all the decor.”

One couple hired architect Ken Linsteadt to transform a traditional Italian villa north of Sonoma into a modern cabin primed for relaxed weekend living — and easy entertaining. story and interview by Paige Porter Fischer photography by Matthew Millman

T

HE ALLURE OF THE OPEN FLOOR PLAN remains strong across all genres of design. As homeowners live more casual and relaxed lives, they seem to covet floor plans that make the most of communal spaces—without sacrificing the serenity of the private ones. Such is the case with a San Francisco couple who found a beautiful piece of property north of Sonoma where they intended to retreat on the weekends. The land was everything they’d ever wanted, but the house—an Italian villa modeled at least in part after the Villa Rotunda—was less than their ideal. The Tuscan-style home was begging to be opened up, scaled down, and reoriented to enjoy the pool, the view, and the lifestyle the couple wanted to create at their home away from home. So they hired architect Ken Linsteadt to reimagine it as a modern villa. We caught up with Linsteadt and asked him how he created a space where the homeowners could escape the city, enjoy the landscape, and entertain with ease.

MHM: Tell me a little bit about this project—and your clients. KL: My clients, Jim and Stephanie Stafford, live full-time in San Francisco, and they purchased this house as their weekend home. They wanted a place that was fairly close to the city, and also had plenty of space for the kids to run around and enjoy the outdoors. This property ended up being the perfect fit. I have worked with Jim on various projects for many years, and first met him in the late ’90s when he was just contemplating a new business venture called Restoration Timber. He had just finished building a house in Aspen and was frustrated by the process of sourcing recycled wood products. He decided he would start his own recycled wood company. So it is no accident that we ended up incorporating a fair amount of reclaimed wood products in the design of the house. MHM: What was the scope of the project? KL: The house they bought was new, but the layout of the floor plan did not fit their lifestyle. The existing house was approximately 5,000 square feet and was designed as a nouveau-Tuscan-style home. The house sits on a large property in the foothills overlooking the Sonoma valley to the south, surrounded by mature oaks. There is a large pool to the north, which, in the prior plan, did not integrate well with everyday living or entertaining. The prior plan consisted of a large two-story volume in the center— with four massive columns in the four corners—that served as the living room, with a series of rooms surrounding the central core. The layout was fairly compartmentalized, and our primary goal was to open up the spaces to the outdoors and to one another, in addition to relocating the kitchen area to the north, adjacent to the pool. We also wanted to move the master bedroom to the south—the quiet side of the property—that also happens to have the best valley views. MHM: So you had a big remodel in mind. What style were the clients going for? KL: In addition to plan changes, we really wanted the vibe of the house to take on more of a modern villa feel, which meant that we essentially gutted the entire house, and removed all of the decorative moldings and small window openings in favor of

The kitchen is made for indoor-outdoor entertaining. A large limestone island anchors the room and provides seating for guests. steel windows and doors and expansive openings. The four large columns in the living room were removed and a catwalk added to help with the scale of the room and also to access a new upper roof terrace that looks over the pool. We also added recycled timbers to the ceiling for added warmth. The great thing about this room is that you can see the treetops of the surrounding oaks through the clerestory windows on all four walls. This enhances the indoor-outdoor effect even though the room is in the center of the house. The massive light fixture in the center of the room, designed by Erin Martin, also helps to ground the space and give it more intimacy. The new spiral stair that accesses the catwalk also drills down to a new basement level where we added a gym and guest suite. MHM: As an architect, you’ve become quite known for your staircases. This spiral staircase is so exquisite. Tell me a little about its design. I haven’t seen a modern interpretation of a spiral staircase as gorgeous as this one in awhile. KL: It is sometimes difficult to integrate a spiral stair into a space without it feeling like a foreign object in the room. We wanted this stair to be sculptural and light at the same time. We decided to make the base of the stair out of the same white oak planks as the floor, but turned vertical with crisp detailing to receive the steel railing pickets. We inserted a steel drum inside the stair at the floor level to help make the transition to the lower level. The overall effect of combining steel and oak planks is quite seamless in the room. MHM: How did you achieve a modern vibe and keep it warm and welcoming at the same time? KL: Jim and Stephanie were very consistent with their desire to have the house feel like a home in the country, while still maintaining the modern lines that they are drawn to, and as such, we introduced a fair amount of recycled woods in the form of beamed ceilings, plank doors, and cabinetry, and also beautiful wide-plank, white-oak flooring. I think the combination of the natural plaster walls, recycled oak, steel windows, and the casual furniture vibe, all help the house feel very warm and inviting. MHM: Weekend houses are often used a good bit for entertaining. What makes this a good house for entertaining?  KL: I think the multitude of outdoor terraces and spaces opening up to one another and ease of accessing the terraces all make it a great entertainment home. MHM: Were there any spaces that were actually specifically designed to make entertaining both possible and successful? KL: One of the more successful elements of the house is the screened porch that we added adjacent to the kitchen. This porch opens to the kitchen by way of a large pocketed steel door, so when it is open, the porch becomes at one with the kitchen.

living room: Clerestory windows, interior terraces, exposed beams, and an oversize light fixture by Erin Martin all lift the eye upward in the home’s great room, which sits in the center of the house. Casual furniture in a neutral color palette keeps the room’s vibe relaxed.

MARIN HOME  FA L L 2 0 1 4  37

The kitchen also has a large lift-up window that opens out to the pool terrace. The kitchen counter extends out as well, and serves as a belly-up-to-the-bar moment, which is a big hit for both the kitchen and the pool. MHM: The screened-in porch feels at once rustic and contemporary. Tell me about the materials here. KL: I liked the idea of this room feeling like it was outdoors, so we brought in the recycled barn wood here. However, we detailed it in a very crisp way so that it still had a modern sensibility. The fireplace is constructed of the same steel that is found elsewhere in the house. I think the recycled wood juxtaposed with modern elements helps the house not feel cabin-y. MHM: This kitchen gives new meaning to indoor-outdoor living. What went into this design? KL: We just thought it would be a great way to extend the kitchen to the outdoors. The lift-up door is operated by an electronic switch. The countertop is made of concrete, and the floors are concrete as well. The concrete floors meet the limestone pavers at the pool terrace in a way that feels as though the floors are flowing to the outdoors. The center island top is limestone, which helps connect it to the pool terrace.

MHM: What about the range wall? I love how clean it feels. KL: I liked the idea of one big hood over the range so it felt less kitchen-y, and I also like the contrast of another material behind the range itself. Erin Martin worked her magic on the tile selection. MHM: This dining room: there’s ample seating for a crowd, yet it doesn’t feel overburdened with furniture. KL: The dining room is meant to have a formal sensibility about it, but also to casually open to the kitchen and the pool terrace as well. It is larger than a typical dining room but not dramatically so. Erin was a proponent of having multiple dining tables in the room for flexibility, and I think it worked out great. MHM: What floors did you use throughout? KL: Recycled white oak, sourced through Restoration Timber, naturally. MHM: Tell me about the wall treatments. They look clean, yet rustic. KL: This is integral color plaster with a slightly rusticated finish. It is the perfect complement to the steel and oak.

screened porch:

exterior:

Linsteadt added a screened-in porch to the house, just off the kitchen. When the steel pocket door is open, the porch, which has its own wet bar, becomes part of the kitchen.

Flanked by sculptural oaks, the house was redesigned to take better advantage of the landscape. Limestone steps lead to the house. Linsteadt juxtaposed industrial and rustic elements such as steel, glass, stucco, and reclaimed wood to give the home the look and feel of a modern villa.

38  FA L L 2 0 1 4   MARIN HOME

MHM: Are the beams in the ceilings all reclaimed trestles? KL: Yes, recycled beams from old barn structures. MHM: The exterior is quite striking—it’s part Italian with the tile and part rustic farmhouse with the reclaimed timber. How did you go about designing the exterior, and how does the stairwell up to the house play into that? KL: The roof tiles are one element that remained. We put new stucco on the house with a wonderful steel troweled finish and “paper bag” color. We introduced the barn wood to help bring the outdoors in (and vice versa), and also to make reference to the more modern touches happening on the interior. The patina of the barn wood also happens to blend perfectly with the bark of the oak trees, which helps the house blend in with the natural setting. MHM: The front door is so dramatic and yet understated and simple. What made you choose the steel windows that you used throughout this house? The front door introduces them so beautifully. KL: I love the contrast of the lightness of the front door with the very textured recycled wood wall surrounding it. This

entry hall is fairly long, and we really wanted to bring light in as much as possible. We rebuilt the front entry façade to reflect the modern qualities of the house, as it is your first introduction to the home. MHM: What are your favorite design elements in this house? KL: Most of my homes are designed in a way to create courtyards and to maximize the perimeter of the house so that the outdoors is always present as you move throughout. This home was a bit challenging in that it is a central hall house, with the main living space occupying the exact center of the home. I think we were very successful in creating a sense of openness, and also allowing for intimate getaway spaces as well. I think we managed also to hit the right chord with the balance of modern/Mediterranean and formal/casual. It really was a great collaboration between architect, owner, designer, and builder. Glenn Goodman’s team was fantastic at all levels of execution in building this home.

dining:

outdoor bar:

The dining room enjoys access to the patio and pool, and doors open to create a seamless transition between inside and out. Salvaged beams, simple wooden tables, and woven chairs add a rustic element, while steel windows and iron lanterns give an industrial flair to the space.

Linsteadt designed a second eating area which extends from inside to outside via the large window, which opens—garage-door-style—to unite the kitchen with the pool terrace. Food and beverages can be easily passed through the open window.

SPECIAL EDITION: THE SHOP

BUT WHAT ABOUT THAT UGLY TILE BACKSPLASH AND COUNTERTOPS?

3

HOW ABOUT THOSE CABINETS? If your cabinetry is in good condition, painting is a great option. You can opt to paint them yourself or bring in a pro. Either way, the cost will be way less than replacing all your cabinets. What color should you use? White is a safe and popular color that can instantly brighten any dull, dated space. However, if you’re looking for a bit more excitement, why not go for a bolder hue? Or try a two-tone effect, painting the upper cabinets one color and the lower ones something different. Or maybe you pop in a surprisingly bright hue in the cabinet interiors. There are lots of different approaches you can take. Start by checking out photos on Pinterest and Houzz if you’re having trouble visualizing color combos. While you’re at it...Unless you’re preciously attached to your existing hardware, get yourself something new. No sense in going through all that work of painting your cabinets if you aren’t going to adorn them with some new jewels! You can also consider swapping out a solid door or two for glass doors. Or maybe you remove a few doors entirely and create open shelving. It’s certainly not for everyone, but it gives you an excellent opportunity to display colorful dishes or a collection of quirky vintage salt and pepper shakers.

2

If you’re feeling ambitious, perhaps you can replace both your counters and backsplash. If that isn’t your idea of a DIY-friendly project, you’ve still got options. Try to determine what the real problem is before you make any hasty decisions. Is it the heavy-grained oak cabinetry that’s got your goat? Once that’s painted and gone, will the counter and backsplash look better? Probably. But maybe not. That backsplash might just have to go. You could replace it entirely, or you could paint it. Chalk paint is a good option because it doesn’t require any special priming. It may not last forever, but it’s the perfect DIY solution for a backsplash that needs to be settled down.

HAVE YOU LOOKED AT  YOUR APPLIANCES LATELY? How are they? Be honest. Are those fingerprints on your stainless steel fridge getting you down? Do you find yourself apologizing for the dilapidated state of your toaster oven? If so, it’s time to replace an appliance or two. If you’ve got a decent chunk of cash, you could invest in one of Big Chill’s colorful beauties. The refrigerators are to die for! But a smaller budget will get you a new dishwasher panel or a retro-cool microwave for your countertop. Still out of your budget? Get yourself a can of paint. Yes, you can paint your fridge. You can even give it a coat of chalkboard paint—perfect for writing up shopping lists or notes to the kids.

5 Ways to Give Your Kitchen a DIY-Friendly Facelift 40  FA L L 2 0 1 4   MARIN HOME

AND FINALLY, DON’T UNDERESTIMATE  A LITTLE STYLING How do you think those home decor magazines produce such great images? It doesn’t just happen. Yes, the space is usually pretty well designed. And, yes, there is probably a really talented photographer behind the lens. But those great photos also come about with some strategic styling. And, guess what? You can do the same thing in your own space.

5

If you have open shelving or glass doors, take some time to make it pretty. Arrange dishes and glasses by color, and try not to overcrowd the space. Save the messy piles of dishes for another less visible storage area. If you’re lucky enough to have a table in your space, get yourself a few new tablecloths. It’s a great way to inexpensively add softness, character, and color. Etsy has lots of great vintage options if retro is your thing. You might need to change up your light fixtures. You don’t need anything too crazy expensive. A couple hundred bucks is enough to get something cool and stylish. You can’t go wrong with fresh plants and flowers. A wall-hung vase is the perfect way to introduce art and plants at the same time!

WHILE YOU’VE GOT THAT  PAINTBRUSH IN YOUR HAND...

Don’t forget about styling your walls. Just because the kitchen is a utilitarian space doesn’t mean it won’t benefit from some art. Even a few strategically hung hand-painted tiles can bump up your kitchen’s style factor a few notches.

Of course, you’ve already thought about painting your walls. However, sometimes you need to tackle your wall color after you’ve painted your cabinetry and tamed down your tile and countertops. Getting rid of all that busyness will open you up to many more wall color possibilities.

4

So, what else can you paint? Your trim, doors, and ceiling. Bring in some high contrast drama by painting your trim in high-gloss black or cherry red. Or punch up that door to the garage with a sunshine yellow. Maybe your ceiling gets an ethereal coat of sky blue! And…what else? Glad you asked. Your floor. Bad tile, damaged wood or icky linoleum? Paint. Again. You can use chalk paint in a solid color, or maybe you want to have a little more fun. In that case, why not explore a cool stencil from Royal Design Studio? Or come up with your own design. If you don’t like it, you can always paint over it and start again.

In over your head? Find experts and licensed MBA members at marinba.org/ directory

And…what else? Maybe you’ve got a kitchen table and chairs that you think need replacing. Are you sure? Try a fresh new hue first. Paint really is a miracle worker.

When your kitchen has seen better days, but a full-blown remodel isn’t in the cards—or the budget—don’t fear. There are plenty of ways to take your kitchen from “blah” to “wow” without breaking the bank. story by Kelly Berg

Lighting the Way to Energy Savings LEDs are cheaper and more versatile than ever before. If you’ve been stalling on upgrading to energy-efficient lighting, now is the time. story and interview by Liz Savage

S

ometimes, making the eco-friendly choice means sacrificing style or convenience. When LEDs, or light-emitting diodes, first found their way into our homes, their stark, almost clinical, bright-white color seemed too harsh compared with the soft, comforting glow of an incandescent bulb. And they were expensive to boot. But thanks to huge energy savings they gained popularity anyway, and over the last few years, the technology has greatly improved.

Today, a walk down the lighting aisle at your local hardware store presents you with LEDs in a dizzying array of hues, sizes, and price points. “You can get an LED replacement for almost any light that’s out there. The options have dramatically increased,” says Peter Mazzoni, owner and president of Redwood Electric. LEDs are more than 75 percent more efficient than traditional incandescent bulbs and can last 25 times longer. The average U.S. home has 50 light bulbs. Replacing just half of those inefficient bulbs with LEDs would save over $150 a year, according to Energy Star estimates. LEDs also generate much less heat than incandescents, so there are additional savings on cooling costs in the warmer months. LEDs used to be very expensive, says Mazzoni, but the cost per bulb has come down significantly in recent years, down to less than $20. Compared to the dollar you’ll spend on an incandescent bulb, this may still seem exorbitant. But LEDs are supposed to last up to 22 years versus less than one year for incandescent bulbs. “An incandescent bulb is cheaper, but consumes a lot more energy,” Mazzoni explains. “You pay less for it initially, but you’re paying more for it on your power bill.” (He notes that LEDs have not been available for household use for 22 years, so it remains to be seen whether the manufacturers’ claims are accurate.) Upgrading your lighting with LEDs couldn’t be simpler. “Everyone has the ability to change out a light bulb,” Mazzoni says. But if you are ready for more advanced energy-efficiency projects, he recommends installing occupancy sensors that know when you have left the room and can turn off the lights for you, as well as timers for nighttime outdoor lights. And don’t forget: the most efficient lighting is the sun. Maximize natural light—through windows, skylights, and pale walls—to help you keep the lights off during the day. >> Light bulb images courtesy of GE image library. 44  FA L L 2 0 1 4   MARIN HOME

How to Read a Lighting Facts Label More efficient lighting options are great for consumers who want to take an easy step toward reducing their energy use. But the multitude of options can be overwhelming. Fortunately, light bulbs are now required to have a Lighting Facts label, much like the nutrition labels you see at the grocery store. Here’s a quick guide to reading these labels.

2

LUMENS: The number of lumens tells you how much light a bulb will put out—the more lumens, the brighter the light. Mazzoni recommends picking a bulb that is a little brighter than you need. If you are replacing a 60-watt incandescent bulb, you should look for a bulb with at least 800 lumens. LIFE: Keep in mind that these estimates assume the light bulb is on for three hours per day. The actual life of your bulb will depend on how much you use it. LIGHT APPEARANCE: White lights are not actually all the same color, and the hue that you want will depend on where the bulb will be used. A warm, amber light sets the mood for a cozy dinner party, while a bright and bluer light is better for paying the bills. Light color is measure in Kelvin (K). Sunlight, for instance, is about 5000K, while a traditional incandescent bulb is closer to 3000K. Mazzoni recommends a “happy medium” of 3500K for most overhead lighting. MBA BUILT

MBA BUILT MBA members come together to form a dream team for your next home improvement project Marin Builders Association (MBA) members are known for their craftsmanship, attention to detail, and stylish and innovative designs. So when MBA members team up on a project, the results are nothing short of stunning. PROJECT SUMMARY The air is fresh outside this hilltop Tiburon home, where bay breezes blow like a cleansing breath. The homeowners wanted their indoor air to be just as pure. To ensure healthy indoor air quality, they opted for lowemissions products and materials throughout the 3,500-squarefoot home, which was completed gutted and remodeled by Jamba Construction. Custom cabinetry by RC Cabinets & Closets, for instance, was constructed with formaldehyde-free hardwood plywood and then coated with a very low VOC paint. (VOCs, or volatile organic compounds, are chemicals that get released into the air as the paint dries.) From the sleek, white kitchen cabinets to the recessed shelves set in the basalt-tile fireplace wall, the eco-friendly custom built-ins complement the contemporary yet warm design of the home.

FINANCIAL WELLNESS sale

Richard De Ramon Novato Branch Manager, Redwood Credit Union

Feeling gifty? Think thrifty.  Spend less and celebrate more this holiday season.

I

t’s easy to get caught up in the holiday spirit, and it can be just as easy to find yourself over budget. Here are a few simple tips to help keep your spending on track and your season full of cheer. Holiday Dinner: Shop with a list. Food stores make extra sales during the holidays by strategically placing displays and merchandise in your way as you navigate the aisles looking for the essentials. You don’t need afterdinner mints or snowflake napkins, but you’re more likely to buy them from an attractive display at the register. Stick to your list to keep your food budget intact.

Gift Shop Early: You may be able to get a slightly better price on the newest gadget closer to the holiday, but cutting it close also increases the chances you’ll spend more on impulse. By waiting until the last minute to shop, you run the risk of an item not being available, leaving you to make substitutions and possibly overextend your budget. Plan ahead and shop early.

Defer Celebrations: If you have family or friends you won’t be seeing until after the holidays, consider shopping later. Most stores have great sales from the day after Christmas through the first week of January as merchants try to clear out their holiday inventories. Your savings can be substantial. Travel Off Peak: Holiday travel can mean crowds, traffic and added expense. Plan and prepare to travel “off peak” by adjusting the time of day you arrive and depart and even the actual day of the week. The extra dollars you save can be used for a little more celebrating, and you’re likely to face smaller crowds as well.

By taking some time to plan ahead, you can save money and have peace of mind during the busy holiday season. Happy holidays from all of us at RCU!

Richard De Ramon is Manager of Redwood Credit Union’s Novato branch. His writing appears regularly in Marin Home Magazine.

Track Your Spending: It’s easy to forget to record your purchases amid the excitement of the holidays. Stay committed to keeping a log—it’s an opportunity to pause and consider your spending, and a way to prevent overspending and make wiser choices with your money.

Seas the Day: Jeff Kerr of Kerr Construction

This outdoor enthusiast and president of Kerr Construction shares a few of his favorite spots to explore this fall. interview by Liz Savage / photography by Trevor Henley

We hear you’re a surfer. Where is your favorite spot to catch some waves? Actually I used to be a surfer. My favorite place to go locally was Ocean Beach in San Francisco. Now I kayak as much as possible, which is still not enough. My favorite place to kayak is Tomales Bay. My other hobby is hiking throughout Marin. Where is the best place in Marin to take out-of-town guests? Point Reyes National Seashore and the Marin Headlands. What do you like best about autumn in Marin? The weather! Fall is great in Marin. What do you like to do – either at home or elsewhere – to enjoy the fall season? In the fall, I always try to go fly-fishing on either the Upper Sacramento or the McCloud rivers. I’ve been a fly fisherman since college, and it’s always a great way to get outdoors, find some time with the nature, and take a break from the pressures of work.

If you’re relaxing at home instead, what is your favorite room in your house? Obviously the kitchen, but since our living room with views of Mt. Tam is adjacent to the kitchen, I’d have to include that as well. It’s where we cook, entertain, and basically live our lives. What’s your next home improvement project? There is always a project at the house. The next project will be to install bluestone pavers in our main patio area to match up with the stone already in place. What would people be surprised to learn about you? I’m more of a gardener these days. I’ve been planting all of the landscape plants and vegetables since I moved to Fairfax. What would you be doing if you weren’t president of Kerr Construction? I’d probably be a marine biologist. I love the ocean and its creatures. They never cease to amaze me.
