HE SAID Dear Sassy: The space I most cherish in my house is my personalized reading room. I’ve loaded the walls with floor to ceiling bookshelves, and I’ve collected all sorts of books and magazines to create my personal library. Michael Crichton sits side-by-side with Kurt Vonnegut and anything by George R.R. Martin is making its way onto the shelves these days too. When the world is getting me down, I head to my nook, (where I also keep a Nook and a Kindle) and my super-sized leather chair with a George Kovacs brushednickel reading lamp overhead, and “One Hundred Years of Solitude” on the ottoman. (And of course, a Jeroboam of Primativo at the ready.) No TV, no Internet, no phone. It’s really made my house a home: quiet, private, and introspective. Maybe this would be a special space for you? And it needed to include a comfortable media viewing area that didn’t dominate the entire room.” Mahoney and contractor Sean Kelly of San Rafael’s Lamperti Contracting & Design faced significant challenges designing and constructing the space. The room would be built on a steep hillside; it needed to match the design of the original house; it had to have enough space to house two grand pianos at one end and a state-of-the-art home theater at the opposite end; and, above all, it needed excellent acoustics. Working with acoustical engineer David Walsh, Mahoney determined the height, width, and length of the space for optimal acoustics and then brought in Scott
Sullivan of Novato’s SoundVision to create a high-performance media system. Sullivan was asked to install a high-definition video projector with a custom long throw lens that could cast images 29 feet across the room on to a 103"″roll-down screen at the other end of the room. “Our goal was to create this amazing video experience while keeping the equipment out of sight,” says Sullivan. To that end, the design team hid the projector in the wood soffit at the room’s entrance and the screen in the wooden bridge across the cabinets at the opposite end of the room. Beautiful white oak cabinets on either end display Dell’s audio equipment as well as a collection of glass art. But the ultimate

ho doesn’t yearn for a room of his or her own? Be it a man cave or an artist’s loft, spaces dedicated to personal pursuits are the stuff dreams are made of. Witness attorney Robert Dell’s spectacular music/media room—an award-winning addition that hits all the right notes. Dell is an accomplished pianist who loves nothing more than sharing music with friends— whether they are guests listening to rare recordings on state-of-the-art equipment or fellow musicians performing an impromptu concert. Accordingly, he wanted an addition to his Kentfield home that would allow him to noodle away on the piano without disturbing the main household as well as create an intimate concert hall and home theater to share with friends and family. “Bob wanted a place where he could play both live and recorded music, so the acoustics needed to be superb,” says Mill Valley architect Colleen Mahoney, who designed the room. “The space also needed to be flexible enough that it could become a concert venue when he invited musician

Custom lighting facilitates different tasks—overhead lighting is supplemented with LED lighting for display shelving; reading and piano lights allow Dell to explore books and music; and down lighting illuminates a large painting of performing musicians by Los Angeles artist Clifford Bailey.
The quiet material palette allows the music and media to take center stage. Neutral colors create an elegant backdrop for the Steinway and Bösendorfer grand pianos. Ivory curtains frame the beautiful exterior views when open and block light for optimal video watching when closed. Plush seating provides a comfortable viewing and listening experience in this extraordinary music and media room.

ccording to Heather Nelson, business development manager for Encore Events in Petaluma and Healdsburg, party themes are trending toward more casual fetes—gone are the days of black-tie affairs. In Northern California, where the sunshine is burnished gold and vineyards run rampant and old barns populate the horizon, rustic elegance prevails. At the heart of this look is the farm table, made of reclaimed wood that’s been naturally weathered over decades, and in some cases, centuries. (Encore’s tables are handcrafted by Petaluma artisans.) Such timeworn beauty provides a charming counterpoint to fresh flowers and such sparkling elements as candles

and glass chandeliers, all of which are practically requirements for unrefined glamour. Another important aspect of the rustic trend involves some creative elbow grease. “The recent popularity of do-it-yourself projects is a really big influence,” says Nelson. Since the familiar adage, “What’s old is new again,” has proven true since time immemorial—fashion cycles are the best proof of this phenomenon—it’s hardly a surprise that Rob Roberts, owner of Corte Madera-based Big 4 Party Rental, has seen an uptick in Mad Men-style events that bring back the glamour of midcentury America. “It’s an easy theme to work with,” says Roberts. For a recent retro to-do, he sourced old-school barware such as chrome and glass cocktail shakers and brandy decanters. In lieu of tobacco, nifty ashtrays can be filled with smoked almonds. Of course, the dress code is what makes such an event come to life. “People just dress up in clothing that their parents wore,” says Roberts. Women don vintage fur stoles and sleek pencil skirts, for example, while men sport three-piece suits embellished with pocket squares and fedoras.

Roberts also forecasts that events catered by local food trucks will continue to be a rising trend. “They’re a cost-effective way to entertain guests,” he says. (Hosts pre-pay for a block of time and a set number of people to feed.) In the Bay Area, food trucks have become an integral part of the local culture, inspiring their own weekly community events. (Off the Grid is one such gathering of food trucks in San Francisco.) As such, they’re easy to come by when planning a party. The Chairman Truck, which dishes out succulent pork belly steam buns, is a popular pick with event planners. Curry Up Now, which brings fusion fare curbside in the form of Indian burritos, is also a tasty choice. Hapa Ramen, which prepares the Japanese minute meal Slow Food-style, is a slurp-worthy contender. “Food trucks are just great conversation pieces,” says Roberts.

Even though there is much to love about Novato’s Rush Creek neighborhood, homeowners Dave and Shawna Mullarkey had mixed feelings about the Cape Cod-style tract home they purchased there in 2003 for their growing family. “We really liked the area because of its generous lots, close proximity to Highway 101, and immediate connection to an open-space preserve,” says Shawna. “And we liked the home’s traditional floor plan and its great light, but we were sad about its cookie-cutter finishes. We knew it was going to take a lot of work to love it.” Despite their reservations, the Mullarkeys had taken a leap of faith based on something that most house

hunters fail to envision: potential. From the start, the renovation was something of a character-building process— not just because most metamorphoses of this scale are learning experiences for those brave enough to take them on, but also because Shawna yearned to transform the generic dwelling into something more unique. “I love old homes, and I wanted to give this one that kind of character.” The Mullarkeys hit the ground running, starting the year-and-a-half renovation with an exterior makeover that included a total repaint, new shutters, and structured landscaping with boxwoods, white iceberg roses, and Espalier
trees. Inside, the previous homeowners’ misguided stylistic pursuits emerged as one terribly executed Spanish theme. (Fake terra cotta tiles, anyone?) Needless to say, the Mullarkeys obliterated every last remnant of the bad Spanish accent in the name of tasteful individuality—an M.O. that was accomplished in several ways, with the help of a team of local craftspeople. First, new oak floors and moldings were installed, creating continuity throughout the home. To help distinguish separate spaces within the new-and-improved open floor plan, the artisans also installed 700-year-old reclaimed barn ceiling beams and transom windows. “The finishes are a big
part of making a home feel like, well, home,” says Shawna. Second, custom built-ins were added to almost every room in the house. In the kids’ quarters, Shawna designed beds integrated with drawers or trundles to help keep the floor space clear of bulky furniture (translation: more room to play!). The den’s new, ceilingheight bookshelves are accessed via vintage rolling library ladder, a score unearthed at the Alameda Point Antiques Faire. A monumental storage unit built into the master bath makes a dramatic statement in black. While creating caches for everything from towels to teddy bears seems to be an extremely rewarding

the fireplace to the mirror, every architectural detail of this sitting room was a Mullarkey add-on; Shawna designed a sizeable black cabinet in the master bath to store towels and linens and act as a dramatic foil to neutral finishes.
White prevails in the new kitchen, from the marble countertops to the painted cabinetry. A single, centuries-old reclaimed wood beam is a grounding element in the space—it echoes the dark-stained oak floors.
endeavor for Shawna, the amateur designer actually gets more satisfaction from achieving a soulful undercurrent with the custom woodwork. “Built-ins and storage just happen to go hand in hand,” she says. “But I love the depth of character that built-ins provide.” The most personal stamps on the interior arose from mind-bending architectural puzzles that couldn’t immediately be solved with mere beams and windows. For instance, it took time to figure out that a seemingly useless wall niche under the stairs could be combined with the coat closet on its opposite side to form a unique walk-in pantry, complete with a mini refrigerator and a custom cart to shuttle baking provisions to and from the kitchen.
Speaking of the kitchen, only after the last Calcutta marble countertop was set into place, and the last custom cabinet face was successfully hinged, and the last Lucite barstool was pulled up to the new peninsula, did Shawna realize that a pesky wall blocked the view to the pool—a potentially hazardous barrier considering the couple’s three kids spend entire summer days swimming in the drink. So what happened? “We tore down the wall and redid everything again,” says Shawna. “I actually enjoyed redoing it. When all was said and done, we got to experience the excitement of a new house all over again.”

color: The Essential Element of a Great Space
There’s no denying the role color plays in design. Color is what gives a space personality and energy. Color lifts the spirit. Through color we can support who we are and how we want to feel. And isn’t that what great spaces are all about? But where to start? Read on for tips on how to use color to create your own great space. The color of your walls is the most critical component of your room’s color scheme. Wall color will almost single-handedly determine the mood of a space. Therefore, a good place to start when selecting color is to ask yourself what mood you want to create. How do you want your space to feel? Masculine and intellectual? Lean towards smoky blues and grays. Flirty and feminine? Pinks and pale turquoise might do the trick. It may take a little practice matching moods with colors, but if you get stuck you can always enlist the services of a color consultant. >>

Flooring is the next biggest component of a room. Deeper colors on the floor will make a space feel grounded. Lighter colors will feel airier. Wood, tile, carpet—all of these materials have a color, and that color will become a major part of your room’s palette. When selecting colors for furniture and fabric, try to avoid being overly matchy-matchy. Contrast is a beautiful thing. A room with too many items of the same hue can feel contrived and monotonous. Layering colors is what makes a room inviting and interesting. Colorful accessories such as throws, vases, pillows, and trays will help you achieve a multi-layered effect. Don’t underestimate the power of the perfect pillow! It’s important to think about the colors of metal when
designing a space. For example, brass is a warm color, while nickel is cool. When selecting finishes for hardware and fixtures, stick with the options that best support your color scheme and your room’s mood. Ceilings need not be white. They can be any color you want. A soft, silvery blue can emulate the sky. A pale, rosy pink can cast a warm glow overhead. For an ultimate sense of envelopment, try painting the ceiling the same hue as the wall. The same goes for doors, trim, and windows. Deep colors like charcoal gray and black can add instant sophistication. And a bold color like cherry red can make a ho-hum space sing. The options are endless. Why let white have all the fun?
A few final things to keep in mind... Think of color as a tool. You can solve many design problems with color. Is your space a little dull? Add some hot pink or bright orange. Need a little cheer? Yellow will do the trick. Color is your friend and is here to help you. Don’t forget about adjacent spaces. The color transition from one room to the next should feel comfortable. Think about how these relationships work. When creating your color palette, move around and view the room from all angles, through all doorways. When your color palette looks good from every angle, you’ve got a winner!

Organize with color Whether you’re working to organize the family room or striving to get your home office under control, use color to enhance your efforts. Assign each child a different colored container to keep his or her belongings in and keep them responsible for cleaning up after themselves. Organize projects, bills, and other important papers by function and color in your home office.

The three rules to organization are visibility, accessibility, and flexibility. Choose containers that are either transparent of that you can easily label to help immediately identify the contents and save valuable time.

By dividing the space, you eliminate the possibility of stacking tall piles of clothing, papers or other items that are destined to topple over.

hen talking about air pollution, you quickly think of the smoggy streets of Los Angeles. Did you know that the air inside your house can be just as dangerous as outdoor air pollutants? In fact, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, indoor levels of pollutants may be two to five times higher than outdoor levels. Sure, some types of indoor air pollution, like cigarette smoke, are obvious, but others are not. Common sources of indoor pollutants include: • Building materials (flooring, paint, etc.) • Carpeting • Cabinetry or furniture made of pressed-wood products • Household cleaning products • Central heating and cooling systems • Air fresheners • Combustion sources (oil, gas, kerosene, coal, and wood) • Personal care products (hair spray, nail polish, fragrance, etc.) • Materials used for hobbies (glues, epoxy, paint strippers, etc.)

inancial well-being is important to a balanced life. Learning how to manage your money, instead of letting it control you, may take a little discipline, but the payoff can be significant.
1. Obtain and review your credit report. You can obtain a free copy of your credit report annually at www.annualcreditreport.com. Review your report to make sure all the information is accurate, and if you find anything incorrect, work with the reporting institution to have inaccurate information corrected. Having an accurate credit report will help you if and when you need to apply for a loan.

2. Track your spending. Keep a simple spreadsheet of how much money you make, how much you spend, and where you spend it. This helps you understand where your money goes. People are often surprised at the expenses they incur, and this is a good start to identifying areas where you may be able to cut back and save. Visit www.redwoodcu.org and type “spending plan” in the Ask RCU box for a free worksheet. 3. Review and refinance. Review all your loans and credit cards to see what your interest rates are and whether you’re paying fees. Then compare with other institutions. There’s a good chance you can refinance for a lower interest rate and lower monthly payments—which means more money in your pocket! 4. Automate savings. Set up direct deposit for your paychecks and other income, and designate a portion of your income to be deposited directly into a savings or retirement account. This will not only save you from having to make regular trips to a branch, but it also ensures you will start building savings. 5. Automate payments. Set up recurring electronic payments so your loans, credit cards, and
other regular payments are made automatically each month. This helps ensure your payments are always made on time, saving you from unnecessary fees. It will also help to build or preserve your good credit score.

Simplifying Your Financial Life

1. Use direct deposit. Ask to have your pay, pension, or Social Security benefits automatically deposited into your bank account. Direct deposit is safer and more convenient than getting a paper check in the mail. It may even help you avoid bank fees. Direct deposit also gives you access to your money sooner than with a paper check. 2. Automate recurring bills. Many merchants, such as insurance companies or utilities, will allow you to pay recurring bills with an automatic withdrawal from your checking account or through a charge to your credit card. Utilize your bank’s online bill-pay service so you can receive and pay bills quickly and easily.

4. Put some savings on autopilot. Arrange with your bank or employer to automatically transfer a certain amount into savings accounts or investments on a regular schedule. You’ll be happy in the long run. 5. Consider consolidating accounts. Think about how many different financial institutions you use and how many accounts (savings, checking, and investments) and credit cards you have. You may be able to simplify your finances, reduce mail and paperwork, and avoid certain fees by consolidating multiple accounts. It can also make it easier to monitor your entire portfolio and ensure that your money is properly diversified. Pay attention to FDIC insurance limitations if you do consolidate. Consider canceling the credit cards you never use, and review your credit reports to make sure you know which accounts are listed as open and active.
6. Look into automated moneymanagement tools. Moneymanagement software can give you detailed, real-time account information from multiple institutions in one place. You can also use the software to help you organize your finances, understand how you spend your money, and spot a potential fraud or theft. 7. Update your will and other legal documents, and make sure your family knows where to find them in an emergency. These additional documents can range from bank statements and pension records to directives that govern what happens to your bank accounts, property, and other assets if you become incapacitated. 8. Get your paperwork under control. Even if you rely on technology, it’s difficult to go completely paperless. Start with a secure central filing system at home for your bank, tax, insurance, and other financial records. Shred any confidential papers you’re sure you don’t need. >>

THINKING OF REMODELING? Top 5 Tips to Reduce Stress and Ensure Your Project Comes in on Time and on Budget

A home remodel project can be wonderfully rewarding, but getting there can be immensely stressful and financially ruinous if not planned and executed effectively. Tip 1: Plan, Plan, Plan The only way to ensure that the project can be completed for a given amount of money during a given amount of time is to ensure that all parts of the project are properly accounted for, priced, and scheduled. Pulling together the design and construction team from the beginning is critical. The design and construction professionals should work together to address design, constructability, cost, schedule, and potential problems from different perspectives. Anticipate that issues will arise during construction, and plan on the project costing 20% more money and taking 20% more time than estimated.

Tip 2: Choose the Construction Team Wisely The best investment a homeowner can make is taking the time to identify and hire a highly qualified architect and contractor experienced with the particular type and style of project the owner envisions. The designer and contractor also should be good at dealing with the permitting entity and your neighbors. To find good contractor prospects, ask friends or contact contractor associations such as the Marin chapter of the National Association for the Remodeling Industry. Interview references to check whether budgets and schedules were actually met. Tip 3: Ensure the Construction Contract Favors You, and Not the Contractor The typical construction contract offered by a contractor favors him and not the homeowner. Ensure that the contract sets a fixed price for all the work, sets start and end dates, requires continued work even if a dispute arises, and obligates the contractor to protect you against claims through indemnity and insurance. Consider incorporating incentive bonuses for reaching milestones or completion early and liquidated damages if the work finishes late.
Tip 4: Hire a Construction Manager to Oversee Quality and Contractor Progress An experienced construction manager can serve as the owner’s trained eyes, ears, and mouthpiece on the project site. The CM can identify problems with construction quality, and he can schedule and require the contractor to fix them before they become big problems. He can also advocate for the owner and help determine whether contractor claims for extra work should be allowed or should be denied as the contractor’s responsibility. The CM may also review payment applications for accuracy and ensure that required backup is provided. Tip 5: Remain Patient and Flexible—and Enjoy the Process Because you know that problems will arise despite the best planning and intentions of all involved, because you have reserved additional funds for contingencies, and because you anticipate that the project will take longer than originally planned, you can relax and enjoy watching as your project evolves into the home you envisioned.

Before Hiring A Contractor

Don’t pay in cash.

Stick to your schedule of payments and don’t let the payments get ahead of the completed work.

Contractors cannot ask for a deposit of more than 10% of the total cost of the job or $1,000, whichever is less.* (This goes for any home improvement project, including swimming pools.)

A free telephone call to CSLB or a few clicks on its website can help you verify that your contractor’s license is in good standing and that he or she has the skills to complete your project.
Check Out the License By law, anyone in California who contracts for or bids on a construction project valued at $500 or more (total labor and materials) must be licensed by the Contractors State License Board (CSLB). To qualify for a license, a contractor must verify four years of journey-level experience in the trade, pass both a trade and license law examination, and post a license bond. Since 2005, all new contractors are required to pass a background investigation that includes a criminal background check. Contractors are required, by law, to put their CSLB license number in all advertisements. Unlicensed operators are required to say they are not state-licensed in their advertisements.

Ask to see the contractor’s plastic pocket license and photo identification. Verify the license and make sure it is in good standing by visiting the CSLB website: www.cslb.ca.gov or by calling CSLB’s toll-free automated line: 800.321.CSLB (2752). Get at least three bids and ask for references on work the contractor has completed in the local area. View the contractor’s past projects in person.
Get It in Writing •
Make sure you have a written contract and don’t sign it until you fully understand the terms.

All changes to the contract, or “change orders,” need to be in writing and signed by both parties.
•
Keep a job file of all project papers and payments, and don’t make the final payment until you’re satisfied with the job.
•
Homeowners waive their three-day right to cancel if they sign a “service and repair contract,” which is different from a standard “home improvement contract.” (Service and repair contracts are usually for emergency repairs where the consumer initiated the contact and cannot wait.)

Complaint Forms If you have a complaint against a contractor, free forms are available at www.cslb.ca.gov or call 800.321.CSLB (2752) and ask for a copy of A Consumer Guide to Filing Construction Complaints and a complaint form.
* There is an exception to this rule for about two dozen contractors who have filed a blanket performance and payment bond with the Registrar. This information is noted on the contractor’s license detail page on CSLB’s website.

Construction Project Check-List 1.
Check the contractor license number at www.cslb.ca.gov to make sure it is current and in good standing.

Ask for a current list of contact information (telephone number and business address) for the contractor, sub contractors and suppliers.

Find out from your local building department whether your project needs a building permit and confirm that your contractor 5 will obtain all necessary permits. Get at least 3 contractor bids and references, and check out, in person, recent projects by the prospective contractors that had similar specifications.

Ask whether your contractor carries general liability insurance and workers’ compensation insurance for employees.

Make sure all project materials and expectations are spelled out and signed in a written contract, including clean- up, debris removal, and site security. Ask your contractor if he or she understands exactly what you want.
