The 4-hour class will be held at Ingman Marine Showroom15001 Gasparilla Rd, Placida, FL 33946starting at 8:30 am and finishing at approximately 12:30 pm. The in-person class is limited in size.The course is taught by members who patrol and are very familiar with south Charlotte Harbor, Gasparilla Sound, Pine Island Sound, South Gulf Cove and Boca Grande areas. The course is designed for those not generally at the helm. It will help participants to be prepared with the basics of boating and boating safety in case of an emergency or a situation that places you in command of your boat. Regular Captain encouraged to attend so they can learn what the “Admiral” needs to learn and practice!Participants learn about: Boating vocabulary and operating principles; starting and stopping an engine; basic boat handling and how to get help; familiarization with your on-board equipment; descriptions of what causes boating mishaps and hot to minimize them.

UNITED STATES COAST GUARD FLOTILLA 7-16 OFFERS SAFE BOATING CLASSES IN GULFPORT, FL, MEETS THE THIRD WEDNESDAY OF EACH MONTH. These classes qualify the attendee for the FWC Safe Boating Card. This card is required for most people born after January 1, 1988 to legally operate a power boat with greater than 10hp motor in Florida. The one-day class includes instruction on safety equipment, boat handling, rules of the road, navigation aids, communications, trailering, legal requirements and others. Power and sailboats are covered, as well as personal watercraft. Of course, besides making a boater in compliance, the main goal of the class is to create a safer boater. Classes are offered on the second Saturday of each month. To sign up, contact Marty Richardson at (630)6745352. Flotilla 7-16 also performs free courtesy vessel safety inspections for power and sail boats, personal watercraft, and paddle craft. The inspector will come to your location, inspect the required safety features of your vessel, and if you pass will provide a safety sticker to mount on your vessel. The inspection is a courtesy, so no action is taken if problems are found. But the vessel owner then knows of any deficiencies to correct before having an accident or being sanctioned by the Coast Guard. A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUART - Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate athome boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out
boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2022 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. These trained VSC examiners from the local squadron will point out safety features such as minimum requirements required by the U.S. Coast Guard, examine fundamental mechanical aspects of your vessel, and answer questions how you can have more fun safely on the water. These are just a few of the many discussion points covered in this voluntary examination. As an added plus, Vessel Safety Checks are free to boat owners. And if you don’t “pass muster” with the thorough examination, the summary report is yours and yours alone. COAST GUARD AUXILIARY OFFERS VESSEL SAFETY CHECKS AND SAFE BOATING CLASSES - A Vessel Safety Check is a complimentary check of your boat conducted by members of the Auxiliary, confirming that it meets both federal and state requirements for safety. No citations are issued, and the results of the safety check are not reported to any enforcement agency, but a decal is awarded to display when the vessel has passed the examination. The Vessel Safety Check (VSC) is performed at your boat, whether in a slip, at the launch ramp, or in your driveway, by a certified Vessel Examiner, at a mutually-convenient time. It usually takes 20-45 minutes, depending on the size of your boat. FLORIDA BOATER’S ID CARD - Don’t forget that “Anyone born on or after January 1, 1988 is required to either have successfully completed a National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) approved boating education course or have passed a course equivalency or temporary certificate examination and have in their possession a boating education ID card and a photo identification card before operating a vessel with a motor of 10 HP or more in Florida.” Identification cards for persons completing the course or the equivalency exam are good for a lifetime. Temporary Certificate exams are made available to the public through contractors. The temporary certificate is valid for 12 months from the issue date. Vessel Safety Checks (VSC):
Vessel Safety Checks are a crucial component of the Clearwater Flotilla’s mission to enhance boating safety. Trained and certified examiners will be available throughout the year to conduct complimentary VSCs for local boaters. These checks cover a variety of safety aspects, including life jackets, navigation lights, fire extinguishers, and other essential equipment. Boat America Classes:
The Clearwater Flotilla is also pleased to announce the schedule for Boat America classes in 2024. These classes provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of boating safety, navigation rules, and emergency procedures. SARASOTA FLOTILLA 82 OF THE USCG AUXILIARY Florida law requires that any person born on or after Jan. 1, 1988, may not operate a vessel powered by a motor of 10 horsepower or greater unless such person has in his or her possession, aboard the vessel, photographic identification, a Florida boater safety identification card (or any other state’s boating card), and the registration for their vessel. Regarding the above law, which has been in effect for over a year, Flotilla 82 of the USCG Auxiliary, based in Sarasota, Florida (at Mote Marine) offers a 1-day course held on the last Saturday of each month. It starts at 9:00 am and completes at 5:00 pm. The course includes the USCG exam which, if passed, results in a Florida lifetime boating card/ license. Weather or Knot February can go two ways depending on the weather, so based on the last few months let’s start with an above average temperature scenario. The snook will be along mangroves that have easy access to deep water in case the water temperature starts to drop. Big Island flats at the northwest end of Howard Frankland bridge have a deep-water channel between Big Island and the shoreline. Although the charts show it as a 1 to 2 feet of depth, in truth the channel is over 10 feet deep with an old barge lying on its side, an absolute favorite of redfish, snook, trout and mangrove snapper.
The old barge sitting along the shore line can only be seen during the winter months with the extra low tides. It’s a great hang out for sheepshead, mangrove snapper and redfish with a falling tide.
The radio towers on the northwest side of Gandy Bridge is another hot spot with plenty of rocks and a deep water canal with easy reach in case of a quick cold front. This is a great area for shore bound anglers from the end of the bridge west to where the mangroves start and has plenty of deep water which is a favorite of snook, trout, jacks, and redfish.
Weedon Island will hold redfish and snook around the oyster bar at the entrance to Christmas Pass. Just
outside in the deeper water flats in 3 to 4 feet you can find some above average trout and flounder.
If the weather is cold, everything changes and you need to look for the fish around deep water canals, hot water runoff around the power plants and rivers.
Silver trout will more than keep the average angler active, so look for them in the main channel going into the St. Petersburg power plant or the south side of Port Tampa channel in about 30 to 40 feet. The big female sheepshead will have moved in from the gulf to spawn in the deeper waters. I have the best results when water temperature hits below 65 degrees, which may not be good for snook but great for the big sheepshead.
Little Manatee river is a gold mine when the temperature drops below 65 degrees. Large schools of jacks will roam the river from the entrance all the way to the railroad bridge. Snook and redfish will hang around the points waiting for the bait getting pushed by the tides. Look for pot holes, an area where the tide has made a trench. I found some areas that drop as much as 8 feet and guess where the fish are staging at the bottom the pot holes.
Don’t worry about trying to catch the white bait (greenback sardines), as artificial baits and shrimpare the best winter bait. Artificial baits will out fish live
sardines during the cold month’s period. Look for deep holes or cuts along the flats let the negative tides work in your favor the fish have to find somewhere to go and if you take some time you can find the right spots that hold fish, Fort DeSoto area is a great spot to start they are still many old bomb holes left over from the early 50’s when the area was used as a bombing range.
Low winter tides and wind make a perfect combination to fish the many canals in the Apollo Beach area. As the sun hits the docks and seawalls it radiates the heat into the water acting as a radiant heater drawing bait fish to it acting like a food court for the hungry redfish, sheepshead, snook and mangrove snapper.
So, after all has been said its weather or knot where to fish depends on the wind, weather and water temperature.

Recently, Tania and I set out on a memorable fishing trip with the legendary Captain Bo Samuel of Pullin Drag Charters. Although I’ve known Captain Bo for years and admired his snook and sheepshead fishing expertise, Tania’s preference for higher gunnel boats has always kept us from fishing together. But today, with sheepshead on our minds, we finally made it happen!
We met Captain Bo at Little Jim’s dock at 8 AM (a slight adjustment from the original 7 AM due to the chilly morning) and quickly set off. We headed north of the Fort Pierce Inlet, where the bite began a bit slow, with a few early catches followed by lulls.
However, around 10:30 AM, the action exploded! We began consistently catching fish, filling the cooler with a diverse haul that included black margate, sheepshead (including Tania’s impressive 18-inch stud!), weakfish, croaker, mangrove snapper,
chocolate porgies, lane snapper, and several other species like porkfish, mother-in-law fish, and even a massive 3.5-foot bonnethead shark.
Captain Bo was an outstanding guide. He put us on fish and offered great company the whole day. He truly deserves high praise for his expertise and professionalism.
Back at Little Jim’s, we took photos of our catch and appreciated Captain Bo for cleaning our fish. While there, we encountered another skilled captain, Billy Briggs of Old Florida Guide Service. Captain Billy, recognized for his outstanding fishing skills and entertaining personality, playfully teased me for not going out with him, but it was all in good fun.

As we roll through January, the cool fronts and wind still prevail. Fishing conditions have been stable, but the winds have changed direction every day throughout the week, affecting water quality and conditions. The key is finding the clean water, where fish are located, leading anglers to successful hook ups.
Bays and channels still continue to hold migratory fish. Bluefish, mackerel, pompano , croaker , drum, snapper and many other species are striking, jigs and shrimp worked along the bottom. The big schools of bluefish are a blast, as one angler hooks up the whole school tends to follow. Top water bite is excellent when conditions allow.
Mangrove shorelines and muddy bottom areas are holding snook on both sides of the tides. Live bait and Rapala X raps in pearl color, great baits to get the strike. Fishing the mangrove areas, anglers have the opportunity to catch all four species of snook, this makes it fun for those that did not know that many species of snook exist.
February fishing provides anglers with cool days and moderate winds, targeting their
favorite species or bucket list species. Snook anglers should target deeper holes, bridges, channels, and sea walls. The snook will be holding near the bottom and tight on structure, high noon sunny days look for snook laying up on sand bars basking in the sun. The snook will strike live bait or DOA C.A.L. 3” shad tail in Arkansas Glow.
The tarpon fishing in the back canals and bays offer great action with the fly rod and artificial lures. Keep an eye out for rolling fish on the surface and work the area thoroughly. Deeper passes hold bigger fish up to 60 pounds. Anglers using live baits will have plenty of action but artificial lures like a DOA terror eyz and DOA BaitBuster in Pearl / green back provoke strikes from the silver king.
The ICW will be teaming with life as anglers can target jacks, snook, tarpon, sharks, drum, sheepshead, and pompano. Seawalls and docks are great areas for jacks and snook during the day and at night. Live shrimp, mullet and DOA C.A.L. 3” shad tail will produce many strikes. Top water
