1. January - March: Boat Show Season: Boat show season is right around the corner! Numerous Discover Boating boat shows — in partnership with Progressive® Insurance — are happening in January, February, and March. Visit a show near you to browse a large selection of boats, experience exciting attractions, and learn from boating experts!
2. March 20: First Day of Spring: The first day of spring — aka the Spring Equinox — will be on March 20, 2025. And if you didn’t already know, that means the night and day will be approximately the same length. Therefore, March 19 will be an excellent time to start your boat’s spring commissioning. With about three months to go before the start of summer, it’s the perfect time to clean and prepare your boat for the upcoming season.
3. May 17-23: National Safe Boating Week: National Safe Boating Week is happening from May 17-23, 2025. Essentially, it’s a National Safe Boating Council program that encourages everyone on the water to wear a life jacket. Therefore, this week is a great time to check your boat’s stash of life jackets and ensure there are enough jackets — in the correct sizes — on board. It’s also a great time to take a boating safety course to rest assured that you’re prepared to boat safely.
4. May 24: World Boating Day: World Boating Day is an international open day where companies, organizations, and institutes within the leisure boating and yachting industries open their doors to the public. Many will organize local, inperson, and online events to increase awareness, build engagement, and foster positive connections. 9. June 21: Summer Solstice: While Memorial Day is the unofficial start to summer, June 21 is officially the summer solstice. On this day, the sun is at its most northerly point in the Earth’s sky, making it the longest day of the year (daylightwise). Therefore, it’s a fantastic day to spend on the water.
10. July 4: Independence Day: Impressive firework shows light up America’s waterways on July 4th, otherwise known as Independence Day. While these colorful celebrations typically happen after the sun goes down, the waterways will be packed all weekend with celebrating boaters.
11. September 1: Labor Day: Labor Day Weekend is the last big hurrah of the summer boating season. It’s known for raft-ups, onboard barbecues, and quality time spent with family and friends on the water. In the northern parts of the United States, Labor Day is often when people pull their boats out of the water and winterize them for the following boat season. Consider scheduling routine maintenance after your Labor Day celebrations to close out the 2024 boating season.
12. September 18-21: Discover Boating Norwalk Boat Show: There’s no better way to finish the 2025 boating season than to visit the Discover Boating Norwalk Boat Show — in partnership with Progressive® Insurance — on September 1821, 2025. On January 1, 1986, Peter Baumann’s success story began. Hired as an assistant to the management, he took on the development of the marketing department for the medium-sized Swabian company, which today sells its products in around 150 countries with great success. He was greatly encouraged by the then Managing Director Ernst Prost. He began his equally successful career in 1990 as Marketing Director, before passing on this position to Peter Baumann in 1993. A few years later, he became an authorized signatory. LIQUI MOLY became a global player for engine oils, additives and car care.
It was a permanent process that made LIQUI MOLY a global company. Unmistakable trademark: the enormous presence as a sponsor and supporter of global elite sport. Be it in Formula 1 with Sauber Motorsport in 1993, in the Bundesliga for the first time in 2000 with the TSV 1860 Munich, or for more than 10 years in MotoGP, the highest class of motorcycle racing. Peter Baumann was the leading man behind the scenes and once again crowned his life’s work with his commitment as an “Official Partner” in Formula 1.

The NMMA Hall of Fame was established in 1988 and recognizes individuals who have made, or continue to generate, substantial and lasting contributions toward the advancement of the marine industry.

About 2024 NMMA Hall of Fame Inductee, Steve Potts: Steve Potts has had a passion for boatbuilding his entire life. During his high school years, he built a 14foot boat called a Scout for a Charleston, S.C.,-based dealer, The Outboard Shop. In 1971, Potts began work for American Fiberglass, where he quickly became manager of the finishing department, and was eventually promoted to plant manager. In 1980, Potts returned to South Carolina to serve as plant manager for American Sail.
After negotiating with The Outboard Shop to secure the rights to the Scout name, and with $50,000 saved up, Potts rented a small brick barn in Summerville, S.C., where he began constructing his newly redesigned 14- and 15-foot Scout boats. In 1989, Hurricane Hugo leveled his operations and he had to rebuild.
Potts used the last of his funds to purchase booth space at the Atlanta Boat Show in 1990, where his designs won Scout a list of 31 prospective dealers across the east coast. The Scout Boats brand continued to move from a locally known boat model to a soughtafter brand around the world. Potts’ leadership and foresight enabled Scout Boats to weather the economic downturn in the late 2000’s.
Potts serves on many marine industry committees and boards and is committed to giving back to his community through donations and outreach. He resides in Daniel Island, S.C. with his wife, Dianne. They have three adult children - Stevie, Sherrie, and Stephaniewho each hold vital positions at Scout. Lemon and Herb Baked Florida Mullet
Ingredients
4 (6 ounce) Florida Mullet fillets
½ cup Florida bell pepper, diced small
½ cup Florida dry white wine
1 lemon, thinly sliced
3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped fine
½ teaspoon fresh basil, chopped fine
1 teaspoon fresh rosemary, chopped fine
1 teaspoon fresh thyme, chopped fine
½ onion, thinly sliced
Sea salt & fresh ground pepper, to taste
Directions:
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Chop all of the fresh herbs and combine into a small bowl (reserve one tablespoon for garnish). Season both sides of the fillets with salt and pepper.

Place the fillets in a single layer into a buttered or greased baking dish, and drizzle with olive oil and lemon juice. Add the fresh herbs, thinly sliced onion, diced red pepper, and lemon slices on top of each fillet. Drizzle with the white wine, and bake for 25-30 minutes or until the fish flakes easily with a fork. Sprinkle with the reserved fresh herbs and serve warm.

UNITED STATES COAST GUARD FLOTILLA 7-16 OFFERS SAFE BOATING CLASSES IN GULFPORT, FL, MEETS THE THIRD WEDNESDAY OF EACH MONTH. These classes qualify the attendee for the FWC Safe Boating Card. This card is required for most people born after January 1, 1988 to legally operate a power boat with greater than 10hp motor in Florida. The one-day class includes instruction on safety equipment, boat handling, rules of the road, navigation aids, communications, trailering, legal requirements and others. Power and sailboats are covered, as well as personal watercraft. Of course, besides making a boater in compliance, the main goal of the class is to create a safer boater. Classes are offered on the second Saturday of each month. To sign up, contact Marty Richardson at (630)674-5352. Flotilla 7-16 also performs free courtesy vessel safety inspections for power and sail boats, personal watercraft, and paddle craft. The inspector will come to your location, inspect the required safety features of your vessel, and if you pass will provide a safety sticker to mount on your vessel. The inspection is a courtesy, so no action is taken if problems are found. But the vessel owner then knows of any deficiencies to correct before having an accident or being sanctioned by the Coast Guard. A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUART
Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2022 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. These trained VSC examiners from the local squadron will point out safety features such as minimum requirements required by the U.S. Coast Guard, examine fundamental mechanical aspects of your vessel, and answer questions how you can have more fun safely on the water. These are just a few of the many discussion points covered in this voluntary examination. As an added plus, Vessel Safety Checks are free to boat owners. And if you don’t “pass muster” with the thorough examination, the summary report is yours and yours alone. Boat America Classes:
The Clearwater Flotilla is also pleased to announce the schedule for Boat America classes in 2024. These classes provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of boating safety, navigation rules, and emergency procedures. SARASOTA FLOTILLA 82 OF THE USCG AUXILIARY Florida law requires that any person born on or after Jan. 1, 1988, may not operate a vessel powered by a motor of 10 horsepower or greater unless such person has in his or her possession, aboard the vessel, photographic identification, a Florida boater safety identification card (or any other state’s boating card), and the registration for their vessel. Regarding the above law, which has been in effect for over a year, Flotilla 82 of the USCG Auxiliary, based in Sarasota, Florida (at Mote Marine) offers a 1-day course held on the last Saturday of each month. It starts at 9:00 am and completes at 5:00 pm. The course includes the USCG exam which, if passed, results in a Florida lifetime boating card/license. With water temperatures averaging around 60 degrees, the cooler conditions have brought significant changes to the ecosystem, making this a prime time to hit the water. Here’s a detailed breakdown of what to expect and how to make the most of your fishing trips this month.
Water Clarity and Tidal Patterns
The drop in water temperature has effectively killed off algae blooms, resulting in crystal-clear water conditions. This clarity provides anglers with excellent sight-fishing opportunities. The winter solstice brings negative low tides during the morning hours around the full and new moon phases. These tides concentrate fish into small, deeper zones where they await the incoming tide. The best action typically occurs after the water temperature rises a few degrees, stimulating fish appetites.
Redfish Patterns and Techniques

Anglers can find them spread out along shallow flats, creek mouths, and mangrove edges. For fly anglers, crab and shrimp patterns remain the top choice, especially when fished slowly near the bottom. For light tackle enthusiasts, wintertime techniques like paddle tails and jerkbaits can be effective for a variety of species, including Redfish, when retrieved with a steady or erratic motion depending on conditions. Focus on presenting your bait or fly naturally to entice these opportunistic feeders.

Redfish have been thick throughout the area, offering reliable action for anglers. These fish are active in a variety of locations, including the beaches, jetty, bridges, dock lines, flats, oyster bars, and mangrove shorelines. Look for mullet schools, diving birds, or bait activity to locate redfish. Live shrimp is a top bait choice to entice these aggressive feeders.
Sheepshead Picking Up
While recent warmer weather has slowed sheepshead action, the upcoming cold fronts should bring them back in force. Look for them around docks, piers, bridges, jetties, and rock piles—any structure with barnacles or oysters. They’re best targeted with small pieces of shrimp, cut oysters, clams, or fiddler crabs. Lighter tackle and minimal weight are key for success close to these structures.
Trout on the Move
Trout fishing has been excellent, with fish spread throughout the back bay waters, mangroves, flats, oyster bars, and even around docks and bridges. Nighttime fishing under dock

Happy New Year! January offers a plethora of species to target throughout Jupiter and Palm Beach. Typically cool fronts bring cool water temperatures and seasonal weather. The cooler north east winds bring in migratory schooling fish for anglers to battle.
The inter coastal waters will be teaming with jacks, tarpon, snook, drum, sharks and many other species. Live baits work great, as well as artificial baits like DOA C.A.L 3” shad tail in glow / gold belly rush and DOA Shrimp. Remember work your baits slow and work the area thoroughly. Look for any signs of bait and birds signifying fish are in the area.
Snook can be found cruising shallow flats, docks and seawalls. Artificial baits like Doa 3” shrimp and DOA curl tail awesome baits to get linesiders to chew. The bigger snook can be found around bridges and deep holes ranging from 5 to 20 feet. DOA terror eyz and C.A.L. 3” shad tail excellent baits to jig the bottom for rod bending action
Channels, mangrove shorelines and sea walls will offer great fishing for, jacks, bluefish, mackerel, drum, pompano and snook. Clean water and moving water the key
for successful fishing.
The Palm beaches have had pleasant weather to start off the new year, along with drag screaming action.
The cool fronts have driven migratory fish into our local waters. Bluefish, pompano, jacks and mackerel are schooled up in deep channels. These fish strike DOA curl tail jigs, spoons and top water plugs. Anglers enjoy casting out and not knowing what is going to strike on the other end of the line.
The snook bite is decent along sea walls, docks and mangrove shorelines. DOA shad tail and Rapala 3” jerk baits great baits to entice the linesiders. Mid day and outgoing tide as water temperatures warm up, the snook get really active.
Night fishing targeting docks lights angler can sight fish snook and tarpon on light tackle or fly rod. The snook and tarpon hang near the docks striking baits and shrimp that get swept bye wit the tides. Great fishing for anglers looking to witness the strike.

I would like to wish a Happy New Year to everyone. As most people in the fishing business will tell you 2024 was a tough year, we are hoping for 2025 to improve. It was a shame because fishing was spectacular from May thru our first cold front. It was nothing to catch a 100 Snook every day, then throw in some Tarpon, Redfish and other species. I fished allot of friends and family trips because it was so good. The trips I did had my customers leaving with smiles and that’s what it’s all about!
The fishing has been good since Thanksgiving along with the business, hoping this carries on into 2025.
If you notice I haven’t complained about the strong winds that we had from August thru November. They have settled down which gives us more opportunity to fish Fla. Bay, when the wind blows, I fish the backcountry which really produced during those windy months. Fla. Bay has produced some pretty good catches lately. Snook, Redfish, Black Drum, and tons of keeper Trout have been a daily catch.
There are plenty of lures out there, I choose the NLBN ‘s because they get eaten by everything! I have
tried every combination of colors and they all work. One of the tricks to lure fishing is confidence, once you have it you will catch plenty of fish.
If you have teenage kids, they are probably using NLBN lures. They are popular, get some!

Mike Burns brought 2 sons and 2 nephews to Flamingo, last time we fish we got terrible weather. I had my work cut out to make up for last time. It was cold and windy. Luckily, we always have somewhere out of the wind. These guys are from New Jersey and the weather is great for them.
Today we had 3 or 4 spots and there were fish on all of them. These guys were happy when they hooked Jacks, Ladyfish and other species. This is always the goal when you have kids on the boat, keep the rods bent! Once

we got around 50 of above species, we went looking for Snook and Redfish. They did really good, I had them using assorted baits. Live Shrimp, Gulp shrimp, and NLBN 3-inch paddle tails.
The young kids now days all know about NLBN lures. As soon as they see them rigged up, they get excited and let me know they use the at home. Its so cool, right off the bat we connect!
The Snook would bite and then a Redfish, It wasn’t non- stop but kept us busy. This was a short day and we had time for 1 more stop. There were a few fish on this spot, 3 Redfish a couple more Snook and a nurse Shark. Things were getting ugly, and the rain was coming. We made the 20-minute ride in and beat the rain. all in all, the weather wasn’t great, but the day was. 10 species today not bad! Hopefully cold fronts will slow down and let the weather get stable for a few days. Once that happens fishing will get interesting although its pretty good right now

There are still mahis in the Gulfstream and if conditions are right September can be an excellent month for that. In September we also start kite fishing again targeting sailfish, mahis, kingfish tunas etc.
