1. Life Jacket for Dogs: Even if your dog is an excellent doggy paddler, a well-fitting canine life jacket is necessary. Strong currents, fatigue, or unexpected falls pose serious threats to any pup! Beneteau has selected Dream Yacht Worldwide (DYW), a leader in sea tourism and vacations aboard sailboats and catamarans, to introduce the brand new electric hybrid monohull “Island Cruising Concept” to its fleet in the British Virgin Islands (BVI) beginning this month.
When modernity and sustainability meet the joy of cruising: To make cruising more environmentally friendly without compromising optimal onboard comfort, Beneteau has designed and developed a new boat, the Island Cruising Concept, capable of operating on 100% electric mode for extended periods without any emissions. Dream Yacht customers will be the first to test this innovation in the Caribbean.
Approximately 30 to 50% of the boat’s energy needs are covered by solar power, thanks to large solar panels mounted on the roof, providing autonomy of more than 2.5 hours at 7 knots, with a software system ensuring efficient energy management. Backup propulsion is provided by the generator, offering autonomy of nearly 250 nautical miles at 7 knots.

Pompano with Blue Crab in Citrus Cream
Ingredients
1/2 cup dry white wine
1/4 cup shallots, minced
3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1 cup heavy cream
1/4 cup unsalted butter, cut into 1/2-inch cubes
1 ½ teaspoons grated lemon peel
8 ounces fresh blue crabmeat salt and pepper to taste
3 tablespoons olive oil
1 tablespoon shrimp boil or seafood seasoning
4 (6-8 ounce) pompano fillets, skinless
1 bunch fresh parsley, chopped
Directions:
Combine wine, shallots and lemon juice in small saucepan.
Boil over medium-high heat until mixture is reduced to 1/3 cup.
Add cream; simmer 5 minutes until thickened.
Add butter cubes a few at a time and whisk until melted.
Stir in lemon peel.
Add crab meat to sauce and heat through.
Add salt and pepper to taste; set aside and keep warm.
In a large skillet, heat oil over medium-high heat.
Season fillets and add to pan; cook 4 minutes per side until opaque in center.
Place fillet in center of serving plate and top with crabmeat.
Spoon additional sauce over all; sprinkle with parsley and serve.

UNITED STATES COAST GUARD FLOTILLA 7-16 OFFERS SAFE BOATING CLASSES IN GULFPORT, FL, MEETS THE THIRD WEDNESDAY OF EACH MONTH. These classes qualify the attendee for the FWC Safe Boating Card. This card is required for most people born after January 1, 1988 to legally operate a power boat with greater than 10hp motor in Florida. The one-day class includes instruction on safety equipment, boat handling, rules of the road, navigation aids, communications, trailering, legal requirements and others. Power and sailboats are covered, as well as personal watercraft. Of course, besides making a boater in compliance, the main goal of the class is to create a safer boater. Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? These trained VSC examiners from the local squadron will point out safety features such as minimum requirements required by the U.S. Coast Guard, examine fundamental mechanical aspects of your vessel, and answer questions how you can have more fun safely on the water. These are just a few of the many discussion points covered in this voluntary examination. As an added plus, Vessel Safety Checks are free to boat owners. SARASOTA FLOTILLA 82 OF THE USCG AUXILIARY Florida law requires that any person born on or after Jan. 1, 1988, may not operate a vessel powered by a motor of 10 horsepower or greater unless such person has in his or her possession, aboard the vessel, photographic identification, a Florida boater safety identification card (or any other state’s boating card), and the registration for their vessel. Regarding the above law, which has been in effect for over a year, Flotilla 82 of the USCG Auxiliary, based in Sarasota, Florida (at Mote Marine) offers a 1-day course held on the last Saturday of each month. It starts at 9:00 am and completes at 5:00 pm. The course includes the USCG exam which, if passed, results in a Florida lifetime boating card/license. There should be good action with reds, trout and snook in skinny water in March as the water warms and baitfish become more plentiful. Look for Spanish and king mackerel, cobia, tripletail and false albacore (little tunny) in the coastal gulf. Night snook fishing in the ICW should also be a good this month.
Spotted Seatrout regulations have changed in southwest Florida to a 3 fish per person, bag limit and a 6 fish boat limit. Trout must be from 15”-19” with one allowed per vessel over 19”. In my opinion it’s important to protect larger trout, which are usually female breeders. Full regulations and details for all species can be viewed at https:// myfwc.com/
This should be a good month for snook fishing at night around lighted docks and bridge fenders in the ICW. Small white flies, like my Grassett Snook Minnow, usually work well at night since glass minnows are the predominate baitfish. Focus on shadow lines where light meets dark and fish strong tides for the best action. Although snook may also be found in rivers, creeks or canals in March, they will also start to move onto shallow flats, particularly on sunny afternoons when it’s warm. I like wider profile flies, like my Grassett Flats Minnow, Deceivers and EP flies, for snook on the flats.
Look for early season tarpon that may start to show in backcountry areas. These are usually adult resident fish that are making their way out of rivers and creeks. They may be “laid up” or rolling on deep grass flats, on edges of shallow flats or along bars when it is calm. An accurate cast may result in an explosive strike! Look for them in areas of lower Tampa Bay or in Gasparilla Sound on some of the same deep grass flats where you find trout.
Reds should be more active as the water warms and baitfish become more plentiful. Higher tides, as we head into spring, will allow them to spend more time feeding in shallow water. Look for them over shallow grass, along mangrove shorelines and around oyster bars when the tide is high. You should find them in potholes and along sand bars when the tide is low. Fly anglers should score with my Grassett
Flats Minnow fly, fished on a 12’ or longer leader. When using a long leader be sure you are able turn it over, otherwise you’ll need to shorten it until you can. The butt section should be at least 50% of the total length of the leader and stiff enough to transfer energy from your fly line to the leader.
You might also find reds around docks when the tide is low. Look for deep water under docks with a good tidal flow for the best action. A clear intermediate sink tip fly line with a weighted fly and a 6’ leader should work well for dock fishing. In addition to reds, you might find snook, flounder, sheepshead, jacks and more around docks.
You may find big trout in skinny water in many of the same places that you find reds. Blind cast seams where grass meets sand or focus on light colored bottom, in potholes on top of sand bars, where you may be able to sight fish them. I release all big trout (over 19”), since they are usually females that are often filled with roe. These big fish are important to the health of our fishery.
You should also find trout plentiful on deep grass flats along with Spanish mackerel, blues, flounder or pompano. I like to make a series of drifts, casting ahead of the drift with an Ultra Hair Clouser fly tied on a long shank hook and fished on a clear intermediate sink tip fly line to locate fish. Also look for birds, bait showering out of the water or boils on the surface that will indicate fish feeding below. When mackerel and blues are around, you may need to add 6” of 40# to 60# fluorocarbon or wire to your leader. Fly poppers also work well when blues and mackerel are around and may help locate them by attracting them from further away. Flounder may be found on sand or mud bottom areas on both shallow and deep grass flats or around docks. Pompano may skip on the surface when you drift or run past them, giving their location away. Fish deep grass flats with a mixture of grass and sand and a strong tidal flow for the best action.
You may also find Spanish or king mackerel, false albacore (little tunny), cobia or tripletail in the coastal gulf this month. Look for diving or hovering terns to find Spanish mackerel or false albacore

feeding on the surface. Small white flies, like my Grassett Snook Minnow or Ultra Hair Clousers fished on an intermediate sink tip fly line, will work well for them.
Run crab trap lines at various depths to find tripletail or cobia around crab trap floats. Fly anglers should score on tripletail with lightly weighted flies with weed guards. I like a shrimp pattern for tripletail. Cobia may also be swimming on the surface as they migrate from south to north following warmer water and baitfish. Large, wide profile flies, like Deceivers or EP flies would be good fly choices for cobia. In the absence of any fish on the surface, check out one of the many artificial reefs or natural hard bottom areas that may hold baitfish and predators. Drift over structure and cast weighted flies on fast sinking fly lines to get deeper in the water column to catch them.
Conditions are usually good during March and fishing heats up. Flats and night snook fishing are usually good options this month. I like to check the coastal gulf when conditions are good, since you could find something really good happening there. Our natural resources are under constant pressure from red tides fueled by industrial, agricultural and residential runoff, toxic spills, discharges, freezes, increasing fishing pressure and habitat loss and degradation, please limit your kill, don’t kill your limit!

March into spring! Warm weather and warm water temps will create fantastic fishing conditions. March is also the start of the spring mullet run, which triggers spectacular snook and tarpon fishing, as well as jacks, sharks and many other species.
The snook fishing will be fantastic as snook begin to trickle from back bays and begin to settle on flats, docks, sea walls, and local inlets. Moving water is the key for successful snook fishing. Live bait, Rapala x raps and Doa 3 inch shad tails excellent baits to get the strike. Nighttime snook fishing another option for those looking to sight cast to an abundance of snook under dock lights and shadow lines. Flyfishing is the preferred method for night fishing, but artificial baits work as well.
Tarpon, a.k.a. Silver King can be found roaming deep channels, mangrove shorelines, and sea walls. The juvenile tarpon are
more prevalent in the back waters, the big tarpon 40 to 90 pounds will be in the deep channels near inlets and beaches. Live bait free lined with the current, great way to get hooked up. Artificial baits, like the Doa terrorize and the 5 inch Rapala x rap also works great. Remember always bow to the king!
Anglers looking for a plethora of species to tango with, channels, deep holes, and flats will be teaming with fish. Jacks, bluefish, pompano, ladyfish, black drum, snapper, sharks and many other species that will get the drag screaming. DOA curl tail jigs mad live shrimp are the baits of choice.

The past couple of trips have been amazing but also disappointing. A week or so ago while kite fishing, we had two big yellowfin tunas explode on the kite baits. The first one missed the short bait, but the second one got hooked on the middle bait. The big yellowfin ran on the surface as well reeled everything in to chase it down. Once we got everything in, we stayed with the fish on the surface as we watched her large sickle fins, cutting the surface and racing on top. We got close to her before she dove down and headed offshore. We got the angler in a harness and started our battle. Everything was going as it should but after 1 hour and 53 minutes the leader got chafed off by the hook. Yellowfins have very small teeth and unless the hook is in her jaw and not down the hatch, this is usually what happens. We lost that fish, but it was a memory no one will forget.
The drama continues into swordfishing. A couple of days ago, we hooked a swordfish on the buoy rod. This fish raced to the surface, and we had complete slack in the line as this swordfish had no problem carrying the 10-pound lead to the surface. This is indicative of a large fish. As
we were within 300 feet of her and she felt the sunlight, she dove back down, and the hook pulled. The very next day, we hooked another big swordfish on the buoy rod. She also raced up to the top, a sign of a big fish. This time we got to the leader, but she screamed back to the bottom. We coaxed her up and got a great look at her and put her at 350 – 400 pounds. We got her close enough to get a dart shot but we missed, which is no surprise as this fish was still very green and racing all over the place. We inched her up only to have her dive down again. This happened again a few times and then the hook just pulled. Upon looking at the leader it was apparent that she was only bill wrapped and never had the hook in her. Another disappointment but another great memory.
Southeast Coast
Besides these lost fish, we have had some terrific sailfishing. I went briefly on vacation to Jackson Hole, but before that we caught 20 sailfish in three days. While I was gone there was a sailfish tournament that was phenomenal. In two days of fishing, 70

That is phenomenal. Although the sailfishing can’t be like that every day, it shows you what the potential is on any given trip. I predict that March and April will be epic sailfishing. As we enter March, it is quite alarming on the lack of trips in the books. It is not just me, but every charter boat I have spoken to. For us, we usually have 25 or more days booked this month. So far, we only have 10 days booked. Not sure what is going on, but I call on all my customers to give us a call and let’s sample some of the best fishing of the year. I know that the sailfishing is going to explode in March and really want to get in on the action. It’s amazing that after 30 years, I still get fired up to go sailfishing!
