Boat Tubing 101: Why It’s a Blast and How to Stay Safe

Boat tubing is a fun and accessible water sport for people of all ages and skill levels. Whether you’re out on a calm lake or the open ocean, tubing behind a boat offers a perfect blend of thrill and relaxation. For many boaters, it’s an annual tradition that turns any outing into a memorable adventure. If you haven’t yet tried boat tubing or are looking for ways to enhance your experience, you’re in the right place. In this post, we’ll explore five reasons to love boat tubing and provide essential tips for tubing to keep you safe.

Why Is Boat Tubing Is So Much Fun?

5 Reasons to Love It

Boat tubing is easy to get into and provides endless fun and excitement. To add some adventure to your boating trips, here are five reasons to try boat tubing!

1. Accessible and Beginner-Friendly: One of the best things about boat tubing is that it’s easy to pick up and enjoy, even for firsttimers. Unlike some other water sports like wakeboarding or waterskiing, tubing doesn’t require special skills or experience. Jump on the towable tube, hold on to the handles, and enjoy the ride as the boat tows you.

2. The Ultimate Thrill Ride: If you love speed and excitement, boat tubing is the perfect activity. Once the boat accelerates, you’ll experience the thrill of being pulled across the water.

Depending on the boat speed and water conditions, you can experience everything from a smooth ride to a high-speed adventure. While tubing offers the potential for highspeed thrills, it’s good to remember to choose the pace that works for you.

3. Great for Socializing and Making Memories: Boating and tubing are inherently social activities that bring people together. It’s one of the best ways to bond with friends while enjoying the great outdoors.

As one person takes their turn, the rest of the group can get involved by offering tips, taking pictures, or simply enjoying the excitement. Because tubing is easy for anyone to join in on, everyone gets to have fun and experience the thrill of being on the water together.

4. Works with Almost Any Type of Boat:

Another fantastic reason to love boat tubing is how versatile the sport is. Whether you own a small pontoon boat, a speedboat, or a larger cruiser, you can easily tow a boating tube behind just about any watercraft. All you need is the proper tow rope and a sturdy towing point, and you’re ready to hit the water.

5. Get Exercise: Most people forget how good of a workout you can get from tubing! Whether you’re holding on to the tube or swimming back to the tube, it’s a great way to get a workout in under the sun. After a full day out, you are bound to feel the effect on your abs and arms.

Essential Tips for Water Tubing from a Boat

While boat tubing is fun, it’s essential to follow safety guidelines to ensure everyone has an enjoyable and safe experience. Here are some must-know boat tubing tips that every boater should follow.

1. Wear a USCG-Approved Life Jacket: The most crucial safety tip for boat tubing is always to wear a USCG-approved life jacket. Whether you’re an experienced tuber or a beginner, wearing a life jacket is crucial for staying safe on the water. Life jackets help keep you afloat if you fall off the tube and ensure you stay visible to the boat driver in an emergency.

2. Designate a Spotter: When you’re tubing, having a designated spotter on board is crucial. The spotter is responsible for keeping an eye on the person tubing in the water. The spotter’s job is to make sure the tuber is safe and can communicate with the boat driver if there’s a problem or if the tuber falls off.

3. Drive the Boat at Safe Speeds: The speed of the boat is another critical factor when tubing. Speeding too fast can cause accidents, while driving too slowly can cause the tube to drag or create instability. When tubing, the general speed range is between 15-25 mph, but the exact speed will depend on factors like the shape or size of the tube, water conditions, and the skill level of the person on the tube.

4. Be Aware of Other Boats and Water Traffic:

Awareness of other boats is vital for safety. Maintaining a safe distance from other boats is crucial, especially when tubing at high speeds. Additionally, when towing a tube, avoid areas with high boat traffic or crowded marinas. Always check for other boats in your path and give them enough space to avoid collisions.

5. Inspect Your Equipment Before Tubing: Before you hit the water, take a few moments to inspect your boating tube and towing equipment. Look for any visible damage or signs of wear, such as frayed ropes or punctures in the tube. A torn or damaged tube could lead to an accident, while an unreliable tow rope could cause the rider to be unsafe in the water.

Ready to Get Out on the Water?

Boat tubing is a fantastic water activity that brings excitement, fun, and great memories to any boating trip. Whether you’re new to boating or a seasoned water sports enthusiast, tubing offers something for everyone.

From the thrill of speed to the sport’s simplicity, tubing behind a boat is an experience like no other. So, the next time you’re out on the water, grab your friends and family, hop on a tube, and experience an ultimate thrill!

WinGD On-Engine NOx Abatement Solution To Make Commercial Debut

The only on-engine NOx reduction solution for marine twostroke engines, designed by Swiss marine power company WinGD, will be deployed for the first time on commercial engines after securing type approval. The integrated Selective Catalytic Reduction (iSCR) solution was tested at Mitsui E&S DU (MESDU) Co’s factory in Aioi, Japan, where three WinGD 5X52-S2.0 engines are being built for bulk carriers under construction at a Japanese shipyard.

The type approval follows more than two years of service experience with a prototype version. The latest iteration features reduced material and production costs, a heating unit to enable operation with heavy fuel oil and design changes to deliver further reductions in ammonia slip.

WinGD Vice President Product Centre, Peter Krähenbühl, said: “WinGD’s unique on-engine NOx abatement solution secures IMO Tier III compliance while giving operators greater flexibility in engine room configuration and ship design. This new iteration further reduces the cost impact of NOx abatement and improves the efficiency of treatment with both existing and emerging fuels.”

As well as reducing the footprint of off-engine equipment, iSCR

also simplifies piping requirements compared to either low- or highpressure SCR off-engine units. Testing and commissioning are simplified as the engine and NOx abatement system can be tested together prior to installation. Optimised exhaust flow management and waste heat from the engine contribute to favourable conditions for treatment.

The test was held on January 16th and was witnessed by representatives from eight leading classification societies: ABS, BV, CCS, DNV, KR, LR, ClassNK and RINA.

The iSCR technology is available as an option for WinGD’s 52- and 62-bore engines, including short-stroke variants, using fuel oil, ammonia or methanol. Extension to further engines will be evaluated based on market demand.

WinGD in brief WinGD advances the decarbonisation of marine transportation through sustainable energy systems using the most advanced technologies in emissions reduction, fuel efficiency, hybridisation and digital optimisation. With their twostroke low-speed engines at the heart of the power equation, WinGD sets the industry standard for reliability, safety, efficiency and environmental design, backed by a global network of service and support. Headquartered in Winterthur, Switzerland since its origin as the Sulzer Diesel Engine business in 1893, today it is powering the transformation to a sustainable future. For

AMERICA CLASS - April 19: May 31: June 28. Certified Instructor-led Course for FWC Safe Boating Card. Held 9am-5pm. $25; household and group discounts available. Contact: Frank Samperisi fsamperisi1@gmail. com, 203-605-9700. Register by Monday for preceding Saturday course. Bring your lunch and drinks; refrigerator and microwave available. Ft. Caroline Community Center, 4131 Ferber Road, Jacksonville, FL 32277.

UNITED STATES COAST GUARD FLOTILLA 7-16 OFFERS SAFE BOATING CLASSES IN GULFPORT, FL, MEETS THE THIRD WEDNESDAY OF EACH MONTH. These classes qualify the attendee for the FWC Safe Boating Card. This card is required for most people born after January 1, 1988 to legally operate a power boat with greater than 10hp motor in Florida. The one-day class includes instruction on safety equipment, boat handling, rules of the road, navigation aids, communications, trailering, legal requirements and others. Power and sailboats are covered, as well as personal watercraft. Of course, besides making a boater in compliance, the main goal of the class is to create a safer boater. Classes are offered on the second Saturday of each month. To sign up, contact Marty Richardson at (630)674-5352. Flotilla 7-16 also performs free courtesy vessel safety inspections for power and sail boats, personal watercraft, and paddle craft. The inspector will come to your location, inspect the required safety features of your vessel, and if you pass will provide a safety sticker to mount on your vessel. The inspection is a courtesy, so no action is taken if problems are found. But the vessel owner then knows of any deficiencies to correct before having an accident or being sanctioned by the Coast Guard. To get more information or to schedule an inspection, contact Howard Bush at (305)731-3580. Anyone interested is invited to attend. Contact Flotilla Commander Howard Bush for more information at (305)731-3580.

A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUART

Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2022 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. These trained VSC examiners from the local squadron will point out safety features such as minimum requirements required by the U.S. Coast Guard, examine fundamental mechanical aspects of your vessel, and answer questions how you can have more fun safely on the water. These are just a few of the many discussion points covered in this voluntary examination. As an added plus, Vessel Safety Checks are free to boat owners. And if you don’t “pass muster” with the thorough examination, the summary report is yours and yours alone. No record of any possible deficiencies will be reported to

the USCG, state agency or any other authority. Want to know more about this complimentary Vessel Safety Check program? Contact Peter Burns at (772) 486-2684 or burnspet@aol.com. St. Lucie River Power Squadron, one of more than 300 squadrons nationwide, also offers safe boating classes to the public. Check on their website, www.slrps.org, when classes will resume. Information about the parent organization is available at www.usps.org.

BUSY, CLASSES DON’T FIT YOUR TIMETABLE? THEN ADJUST OUR SCHEDULE We understand BUSY. The Banana River Sail and Power Squadron teaches a large number of classes. COAST GUARD AUXILIARY OFFERS VESSEL SAFETY CHECKS AND SAFE BOATING CLASSES - A Vessel Safety Check is a complimentary check of your boat conducted by members of the Auxiliary, confirming that it meets both federal and state requirements for safety. No citations are issued, and the results of the safety check are not reported to any enforcement agency, but a decal is awarded to display when the vessel has passed the examination. The Vessel Safety Check (VSC) is performed at your boat, whether in a slip, at the launch ramp, or in your driveway, by a certified Vessel Examiner, at a mutuallyconvenient time. It usually takes 20-45 minutes, depending on the size of your boat. TIDES FOR FLORIDA’S GULF COAST: APRIL 2025

TIDES FOR FLORIDA’S ATLANTIC COAST: APRIL 2025

Captain’sCorner

with Captain Sergio Atanes West Central Florida

A Chance to meet The King (King Mackerel)

If all goes well the water temperature is slowing working its way into the mid 70’s and you know it is Kingfish and Spanish Mackerel time. The longer days of spring and warmer waters bring the schools of baitfish to the shallow Gulf waters. When water temperatures start to increase to 72-degrees, king mackerel start their northern migration, stopping to feed on the schools of sardines and cigar minnows along the coastline of Florida. Kings are caught each year from many Gulf piers and extend to twenty miles from shore, which puts them within the range of the average angler.

Although the quantity of Kings is a thing of the past and yes for newbies there seems to be plenty take from us who grew up fishing the Gulf of America, its nowhere what it used to be you could go out for a couple of hours hook 20 to 30 Kings and be home for lunch.

Many anglers prefer trolling for kingfish. I am one of those who love to watch the fish strike and make that long first run, especially early calm morning when the water looks like a calm peaceful lake. Trolling allows you to cover more areas, but I would rather sit and chum, on one note I have caught many a permit while anchored waiting for the kingfish to arrive.

There are many ledges, and artificial reefs can be found on

Florida’s west coast, especially between Tarpon Springs and Boca Grande. If you decide to drop anchor, make sure you are up current from any ledges or reefs to prevent getting snagged. Getting too close to these areas can cause you to lose not only your rigging, but also your fish. By cutting some bait into small pieces and allowing it to drift with the current, king mackerel will quickly pick up the scent and zero in on the bait. When drifting, first find a school of baitfish and start your drift up-tide from the school while free lining your bait on the outer edges of the school. Repeat the process when the school is out of casting range. Using live bait, whether drifting or anchoring, will increase your chances of boating a King Mackerel.

Live bait can be easily caught on the grass flats, along the edges of the channels, or around channel markers. A 10-foot bait net is best for shallow waters and a 12-foot larger mesh net is recommended for deeper waters.

Baitwells are a necessity; sardines require a large volume of moving water and oxygen to stay healthy. I recommend adding an aeration system to ensure lively baits. Several add-on systems are available for either bridge anglers or boats without baitwells.

King Mackerel are fast swimmers that need a constant supply of oxygen to stay alive. Even a short period out of water can be fatal. It is important to be ready with gloves and pliers

Fishing Florida’s Backcountry: A Variety of Species in Rookery Bay and Southwest Florida

Fishing in Florida is a year-round adventure, but this time of year offers some of the best opportunities to target a variety of species in the backcountry waters of Rookery Bay and Southwest Florida. Whether you’re an experienced angler or new to the sport, the rich estuaries and mangrove-lined waters surrounding Naples provide a world-class fishing experience. From snook and redfish to sea trout and snapper, the action is heating up as we transition into spring. And for those eager to chase the silver king, tarpon fishing in Naples is just around the corner, with the first waves of migratory fish expected to arrive within the next month.

Redfish and Trout Providing Steady Action

Another staple of the Naples fishing scene is redfish. These bronzecolored bruisers can be found tailing on the flats or tucked deep into mangrove shorelines. The best way to hook into a redfish is by using cut bait, live shrimp, or soft plastics rigged weedless to navigate their preferred habitat. With the tides playing a crucial role, focusing on moving water will help anglers connect with more fish.

Sea trout are also making their presence known in Rookery Bay and surrounding areas. These aggressive feeders are commonly found on grass flats, feeding on baitfish and shrimp. For anglers looking to catch numbers, using a popping cork rigged with live shrimp or soft plastics is an effective method. As we move further into spring, larger trout will start showing up, providing an excellent opportunity for anglers to land a true gator trout.

Snapper and Sheepshead for a Tasty Catch

While many anglers chase game fish, the backwaters of Southwest Florida also provide excellent opportunities for filling the cooler. Mangrove snapper and sheepshead are readily available, offering a delicious reward at the end of a day on the water. Fishing structure like docks, rock piles, and mangrove roots with live shrimp or small cut bait will result in steady action. These species are not only fun to catch but also make for some of the best table fare in the region.

The Anticipation of Tarpon Season in Naples

For those eager to test their skills against one of the most sought-after game fish in the world, tarpon fishing in Naples is about to get exciting. As we move into late

for a quick release. King mackerel have a 24” fork size minimum and a 3-bag limit per day in Gulf waters. Keep only what you can eat and release the rest for another day.

So, anglers prefer to use tackle that insures more boated fish; 40-pound coffee colored wire, black swivel, double hook or stinger reg tied to 40-pound 4-foot-long fluorocarbon leader with 40-pound braided line on a conventional reel, and a 7-foot medium heavy rod. My personal preference is a medium spinning outfit, with a 20-pound braided line and a number 10-barrel black swivel tied to 40-pound fluorocarbon leader with a stinger rig.

Some of my best baits for big King Fish are blue runners and cigar minnows. Catch extra bait for chum or just buy several boxes of chum well worth the investment in the long run.

Just a final note don’t try to be the first anglers on the water looking for Kings catch your bait make your chum get the gear ready and here is my advice then going looking for what I call the parking lot (bunch of boats gathering in a area) they are telling you where to start your day the rest is up to you.

God Bless and tight lines.

March and early April, the first waves of migrating tarpon will begin showing up along the beaches, passes, and in the backcountry. These silver kings provide some of the most exhilarating fishing experiences, leaping high into the air and making drag-screaming runs. Live bait such as mullet and crabs, as well as well-presented artificial lures, will be key to hooking into these giants.

Spring Lake Toho Fishing Report

Spring has sprung and so have the bass! With the fish mainly into the post spawn season now and the weather becoming consistent, the bite on Orlando’s Lake Toho has become very consistent. We’re averaging 15-20 bass on our 4 hour charters with our captains getting over 30 some days. The size has been good also, 3 pounders have been the average size with 4 pounders being very common, along with 7+ pounders being reeled in by a few of our charters everyday!

All in all the lake is setting up for a killer summer of fishing with areas of the lake being opened that haven’t been fishable in years because of all the topped out grass, since they sprayed much of the grass back in February.

With the bass being in the post spawn, the bulk of the bass have moved out of the shallower spawning flats. While there are still fish to be caught

with

up on the outside edges of the Kissimmee grass and lily pads, most of the bass have moved offshore into the hydrilla, peppergrass, and eelgrass. You want to look for submerged hydrilla and eelgrass, not matted out to the top, and for the peppergrass you want to fish the outside edges of the topped out grass.

Once you’re on one of these offshore grass patches a number of lures have been working. Flukes, jerkbaits, speedworms, chatterbaits, and rattletraps have all been producing fish daily. But if you’re looking to book a charter, than wild shiners is what I would recommend using. You’ll get the most out of your day with them catching both bigger numbers and bigger fish.

April is a wild month it can be hot, rainy or cool. Fishing is great, no matter what the weather brings. The spring mullet run can creates eating frenzy, along beaches and inshore waters.

Hope you guys get a chance to experience the epic fishing we have here on Orlando’s Lake Toho this spring and if you would like to book a bass fishing charter with us, you can do so on our website, OrlandoBass.com

back get the silver kings excited. Live bait for tarpon will get the drag screaming, free line or slow troll baits along mangrove shorelines and drop offs for consistent action.

Snook fishing along docks, sea walls and mangrove shorelines great areas for anglers to target the linesiders. Sunrise provides great action with top water Rapala skitter walks entice explosive strikes. Mid day switch to a DOA C.A.L. 3 inch shad in glow / gold rush belly. Seawalls and grass flats are great areas to find snook laid up ambushing bait schools, be sure to stay quit and look for bait schools or snook crashing baits as signs of life.

Tarpon fanatics! April tarpon action gets the drag screaming. Tarpon can seen rolling on the surface, both sides of the tides produce great results. DOA bait busters in pearl / black

Anglers looking for drag screaming on light tackle, target jacks along seawalls and grass flats. The jacks school together ambushing schools of live bait in there vicinity. Rapala skitter walks and DOA PT-7 weedless top water work great for the jacks. If artificial lures are not your choice, live mullet and greenies will also produce action. Freeline baits with tide or near any structure for best results.

Well that is the fishing report for April, I hope you all enjoyed. Get out there and get hooked up. Tight Lines & Happy Easter!

Grille - 3105 Beach Boulevard - Capt. Russell is happy to be a sponsor of the Florida Lure Anglers Club in Jacksonville, Fla. The FLA is not just a club for professional anglers, they are promoting saltwater lure fishing at all levels, especially among beginners. Guests are welcome to come and join our monthly meetings and listen to our guest speakers who discuss a wide variety of fishing techniques and helpful tips for all anglers. Meetings are held the last Monday of every month at the Mudville Grille located at 3105 Beach Blvd. Doors are open at 6:00 p.m. and the meeting begins at 7:00 p.m.

2025 National Women’s Sailing Association Conference Presented by American Sailing to be held June 6 -

8, St. Petersburg, Florida

“Knowledge – Skills – Fun” while Celebrating NWSA’s 35th Anniversary

The National Women’s Sailing Association (NWSA) is expanding their 2025 National Women’s Sailing Association Conference Presented by American Sailing to three days June 6 - 8 at the University of South Florida, St. Petersburg. The event welcomes women sailors of all skill levels, ages and backgrounds to workshops including the popular Take the Helm® track — an introduction to sailing for women, plus a view into the marine industry and opportunities to meet accomplished cruisers and racers. The Saturday Morning keynote speaker will be Tracy Edwards, MBE, world racer and Project Manager of The Maiden Factor, where she skippers Maiden, a Global Ambassador for the Empowerment of Girls through Education. The Saturday evening keynote speaker will be National Women’s Sailing Association Founder and National Sailing Hall of Famer Doris Colgate.

Friday welcomes the first morning classes followed by lunch and tours of two prominent industry leader facilities: Mastry Engine Center and Island Packet Yachts Factory. Women Who Sail Tampa Bay are hosting their 10th anniversary party and welcoming NWSA attendees who are also celebrating their 35th anniversary this weekend for a happy hour.

Saturday programming includes a full day of classroom, dockside and on-the-water workshops taught by experienced female instructors and Captains from across the nation. Women can fine tune their spinnaker setting, sail trim, navigation, boat systems knowledge, learn how to recover a crew overboard and more. There will be more than 30 different classes at different levels to choose from with up to 15 going on concurrently. Breakfast and lunch will be provided as well as a postevent fundraising raffle and silent auction for girls scholarships & NWSA AdventureSail® Program with a cocktail social hour.

During the luncheon, NWSA will announce and introduce the 2025 BoatUS/NWSA Leadership in Women’s Sailing Award recipient, co-sponsored by NWSA and BoatUS since 1999. This award recognizes an individual with a record of achievement in inspiring, educating and enriching the lives of women through sailing.

Conference classes continue Sunday morning at St. Petersburg Yacht Club followed by an optional brunch with “Gaining Speed on Racing” speakers and Mustang sailing gear fashion show.

NWSA is thankful to sponsors that make the conference possible. We are proud to announce our 2025 Conference sponsors: Title: American Sailing, Captain: BoatUS, Skipper: Aqua Map, Mustang Survival, Sail Technologies, Crew: GirlsSailing.com, and Deck: Flying Scot, Live The Sail Life and The Yacht Rigger.

Early bird Saturday and Sunday package registrations start March 1 to 15 for NWSA Members at $225; Nonmembers $275 March 16 - April 14; late registration members $250 and nonmembers $325 through June 4. Friday and Sunday brunch events are available separately. Sign up for the NWSA eNewsletter or to
