10 Best Marine Weather Apps for Boaters

There are helpful marine navigation apps that make it easier to get from point A to point B, and there are fishing apps that will boost your catch rate, but another variety of app that all boaters need to know about are marine weather apps. Check out these 10 top contenders.

1. Buoyweather: Buoyweather is a longtime favorite of boaters for its easy navigation, solid accuracy, and map location-based forecasts. Detailed wind and wave forecasting, not available from many apps, is a big plus. It worked just fine for us when we tried it on a Samsung Galaxy S10, but customer reviews do indicate that the current 1.2.3 version works best on Apple products and may crash at times on some older Androids. Price: You can get two-day forecasts for free but advanced features and long-range forecasting requires a $14.99 premium upgrade.

2. Fishweather: Anglers may love Fishweather for its onsite fishing reports, but all mariners will love its detailed wind maps showing both wind strength and direction on color-coded wind charts with detailed forecasting out to a week. Plus, we’ve used Fishweather for years and over time have found that its wind forecasts one to three days out are about as accurate as any get. Price: Free, but some of the more advanced features (like sea surface current charts and real-time Nowcast observations) require paid upgrades (starting at $3.99); however, even the basic

version has a wealth of data.

3. NOAA Marine Weather Forecast: If you want an app that covers all of the marine weather bases, NOAA Marine Weather Forecast does the trick. Its comprehensive list of features includes buoy data, six-hour historical wave height trends, tide and current forecasts, National Weather Service marine forecasts, NOAA severe weather reports, NEXRAD radar imagery, and real-time wind, wave and temperature data. Price: A data download like this doesn’t come free, however, and you’ll have to spend $1.99 to get NOAA Marine Weather Forecast on your phone.

4. NOAA Weather Radar & Live Alerts: We find this free app (with ads and in-app purchases) a top pick for its high reliability. Unlike many apps it doesn’t crash, lock up, or fail to deliver the data you want, when you want it. It includes real-time animated weather radar on a background map that’s easy to zoom in and out on, and also includes short and long-term forecasting. The Live Alerts feature can become annoying at times (who needs their phone to beep a marine weather alarm, when they’re in their car or at the desk?) but is obviously quite valuable when you’re out on the water the forecast you saw earlier in the day turns out to be wrong. Price: Free, with in-app purchases.

5. Predictwind: A favorite of serious sailors, Predictwind incorporates live weather observations from over 20,000 live stations,

has high-resolution forecast maps, and forecast alerts. It also garners a rather impressive 4.8 out of five stars on the Apple App Store. That matches up with the uber-accurate forecasts we observed while using the app, which nailed wind direction and speed exactly. Price: Free accounts get lower resolution mapping, and in-app purchases starting at $3.99 let you access better data.

6. Sailflow: Sailflow is a global service that taps into 50,000-plus weather stations to develop free wind forecasting. Radar precipitation maps, forecast maps, tide and current data, and nautical charts are also in the mix. This is another app that impressed us with its accuracy, predicting wind speed and direction to a tee. Price: For sailors it’s another top pick, but getting the detailed data takes a $3.99 (and up) in-app purchase.

7. Storm Shield: Another app developed for land-based activities but quite useful for those of us enjoying the boating lifestyle, Storm Shield is one you may want to load up and forget about—until it sets off an alert. Unlike many of the county-based weather alerts generated by apps, Storm Shield narrows down to your exact location. Price: It’s a free service but if you want additional functionality like radar and wind speed forecasts, you’ll have to spring for the $0.99 in-app purchase.

8. United States Coast Guard: Yes, the United States Coast Guard has its own app, and while strictly speaking it isn’t 100-percent

about marine weather, it has some valuable weather data boaters along any coast will want: free access to the latest weather info coming from the NOAA weather buoy nearest to your location. Price: Free!

9. Weather Channel: Much of the information you’ll find on the Weather Channel app is relevant to land and it’ll take a bit of time to figure out how to navigate to the data we boaters care about, but still, this is a great weather app to have at your fingertips thanks to its extremely high reliability (on both Apple and Android platforms), live radar, severe weather alerts, and accurate forecasting. In fact, according to a study compiling seven years of forecasts performed by ForecastWatch, Weather Channel had the best overall accuracy around. Price: Free, with in-app purchases.

10. Weatherbug: Weatherbug has been around for a long time and is packed with data that’s not relevant to boaters (like pollen levels and traffic alerts), but this is another freebie with in-app purchases which places a tremendous amount of weather data at your fingertips. Maps for radar, lightning, wind—18 of them in all—and hourly to 10-day forecasting account for Weatherbug being picked the Best Weather App in 2016 and again in 2019 in the Mediapost Appy Awards. Price: Free, with inapp purchases.

The maritime industry stands at the cusp of a transformative era. With global carbon emission targets intensifying, technological innovations like Hefring Marine’s Intelligent Marine Assistance System (IMAS) are proving to be crucial game changers. These tools are not just reducing emissions but also paving the way for safer, more efficient operations.

The maritime industry’s carbon challenge: The shipping industry accounts for nearly three percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, a figure expected to rise if left unchecked. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set ambitious goals: a 40 percent reduction in carbon intensity by 2030 and Net Zero emissions by 2050. Coupled with rising fuel costs and stricter environmental regulations, shipping companies face mounting pressure to adopt sustainable practices. Yet, challenges persist. Economic pressures and the need for reliable operations often clash with sustainability initiatives. Additionally, underwater radiated noise poses a growing threat to marine ecosystems. These factors underscore the urgency for scalable solutions that align operational efficiency with environmental stewardship.

How technology is transforming operations: Technological advancements are reshaping the maritime landscape. Real time data analytics and AI driven platforms are enabling vessels to adapt dynamically, optimizing routes, speeds, and fuel usage. Hefring Marine’s IMAS platform exemplifies this shift, combining machine learning and adaptive decision making to enhance efficiency and reduce environmental impact. The Dutch Pilots’ Organisation (het Loodswezen), a key player in global maritime traffic management, which first became aware of Hefring Marine’s technology whilst visiting the Dutch Search and Rescue, highlights this potential. “The opportunity to enlarge situational awareness

in all weather conditions triggered us. Making informed decisions on the water and the possibilities to ensure the well-being of the crew and pilots made us start a Proof of Concept,” says Jan Bregman, Head of Shipping Service in the Amsterdam-IJmond region. With a fleet facilitating over 90,000 annual pilotage operations, it adopted Hefring Marine’s platform to tackle its dual challenge of operational safety and emissions reduction. “This is an important responsibility, especially given the prominent position that the Netherlands holds in the global transport and shipping industry. For this, we are available 24 hours a day, in all weather conditions,” Stefan van der Stap, Manager Shipping Service at the Dutch Pilots’ Organisation, commented.

Spotlight on Hefring Marine’s innovation: Hefring Marine’s vessel optimization system integrates cutting edge analytics, enabling just in time planning and reducing unnecessary fuel consumption. For the Dutch Pilots’ Organisation, this meant implementing the eco-speed feature, potentially leading to fuel savings of up to ten percent. Additionally, their collaboration introduced the “comfort speed” concept, ensuring smoother operations and enhanced crew well-being. Key features of the platform, like its accessible data studio, empower crews to analyse historical data without extensive IT or data science support. This democratization of technology fosters a culture of continuous improvement, seamlessly blending operational efficiency with sustainability goals.

A broader impact: The benefits extend beyond just emissions reduction. The Dutch Pilots’ Organisations experience shows that real time situational awareness improves crew safety, even in adverse conditions. As the maritime industry integrates alternative fuels and hybrid systems, technologies like IMAS become pivotal, enabling compatibility and maximizing efficiency across diverse energy solutions. The proof of

concept stage at the Dutch Pilots’ Organisation exemplifies the industry wide potential. Their trials demonstrated the feasibility of using AI-driven tools for predictive planning and operational efficiency, a roadmap for other companies navigating similar challenges. “During the PoC the potential of the eco speed concept surfaced as well. A great opportunity to reduce environmental impact as well. After a successful PoC we decided to adopt the platform and further invest in IMAS for the remaining M2 class vessels,” commented Twan Horrevoets, Maintenance Management Engineer at the Dutch Pilots’ Organisation.

Future outlook: The next decade will likely see broader adoption of AI-driven marine technologies. With global shipping demand set to grow, integrating these solutions will be critical for achieving sustainability targets. Hefring Marine’s platform offers a scalable solution, bridging the gap between ambitious environmental goals and practical implementation. Call to action: For maritime executives, the takeaway is clear: the path to sustainability lies in leveraging smart technology. Tools like Hefring Marine’s IMAS not only optimize performance but also align with industry wide decarbonization efforts. It’s time for stakeholders to evaluate their current operations and explore how advanced solutions can support their transition to more efficient, sustainable practices.

By adopting forward thinking technologies, the maritime industry can chart a course toward a cleaner, greener future, one voyage at a time. When asked if they recommend Hefring Marine’s solutions to other shipping companies, Captain and Instructor Marco Kruijt and Peter Siepel, program manager at the Dutch Pilots’ Organisation said: “The Hefring platform is a perfect way to step into the world of big data and AI and start learning ways to enable situational awareness, the well-being of the crew and reduce environmental impact.” www.hefringmarine.com

Pan Seared Florida Grouper with Smoked Gouda Grits and Tomato-Bacon Gravy

Ingredients:

4 (5-7 ounce) portions Florida

2 ½ cups vegetable stock

1 cup milk

1 cup grits, coarse ground

1 tablespoon butter

1/2 cup smoked Gouda cheese,

1 teaspoon olive oil

1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped

1 cup thick-cut bacon, chopped

2 large Florida tomatoes, diced

1 tablespoon fresh garlic,

3/4 cup heavy whipping cream

1/2 lemon, juiced

4 scallions, sliced thin for garnish

Sea salt and fresh ground pepper to taste

Directions:

Gouda Grits

In a medium-sized saucepot, add 2 cups vegetable stock and 1 cup of milk. Bring ingredients to a simmer over medium heat. Add grits and butter and let cook according to the directions on the package of grits. When the grits are cooked, add the smoked Gouda cheese and stir to combine. Taste grits and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper. If the grits seem too thick, add a small amount of vegetable stock or milk until the desired consistency is reached. Turn the temperature to low until the dish is ready to be plated.

Florida Grouper

Preheat a large sauté pan over medium-high heat. Add 1 teaspoon of olive oil to the preheated pan. Lightly season the grouper fillets with salt, pepper and fresh parsley. Carefully place the seasoned fillets top side down in the sauté pan. Cook each fillet for around 3 minutes on each side or until golden brown and completely cooked throughout the thickest part of the fillet. Remove the cooked fillets from the pan and add the chopped bacon. Cook the bacon until crispy, and add the tomatoes and garlic. Cook the tomato mixture until the tomatoes start to wilt and release their juices. Add the heavy cream, lemon juice and 1/2 cup vegetable stock. Quickly bring ingredients to a boil and reduce heat. Taste tomato gravy and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper. Serve the grouper over a bed of grits and top with the tomato gravy. Garnish with the thin sliced scallions.

Spotted Seatrout Fever

Every year about this time, I get the “itch” and a burning desire to go catch big gator trout that move into Suncoast waters. Just how they got the nickname “gator trout”, I’m not sure, but whatever you want to call them, they are a completely different animal when they start to nudge the 30-inch range. While those fish may be few and far between right now with the amount of fishing pressure we have and issues with red tide from time to time, I look at our fishery as one that continues to rebound from several years of red tide and a freeze going back to 2010. Our habit is suffering the loss of much-needed seagrass that had been increasing for the past few decades in the Tampa Bay area but has seen a decline in recent years. Runoff, pollutants, and sewage spills continue to plague the state, no matter where you are.

Expanding construction and habitat loss of mangroves continue daily with more new residents moving to Florida. There are currently over 4 million fishing license holders in the state of Florida, with more added by the day, and the Coastal Conservation Association has been at the forefront of helping restore these losses by creating 48 artificial

reefs in the last 10 years, as well as spearheading over 100 habitat projects throughout the state. Oyster bed and clam restoration projects have been completed, and nearly $1,000,000 have been awarded in Florida youth scholarships since 2015. CCA, in conjunction with Duke Mariculture in Crystal River, have restocked 5,000 snook, more than 305,000 redfish, and 210,000 sea trout into Florida’s bays and estuaries.

Membership in the organization is ideal, but you don’t have to be a CCA member to help our fisheries. When renewing your auto and trailer license plates, you can opt to spend an additional $25.00 for the plate that CCA Florida worked with the Florida Legislature on to create the “Conserve Florida’s Fisheries” Florida license plate. 100% of the $25.00 spent for the plate goes directly to CCA to enhance and help rebuild our fisheries.

As a result of the efforts of CCA in improving our fishery’s habitat, for the first year in the past 5+ years, we are once again seeing larger numbers of gator seatrout. After being nearly wiped out by red tide and habitat loss, this species has been making a steady

West Central Fly Fishing and Light Tackle Report

This fishing report provides key insights for fly anglers and artificial lure fishermen targeting snook, redfish, and speckled trout along the Gulf Coast, from Tampa Bay to the Chassahowitzka River. With fluctuating water temperatures affecting fish behavior, understanding their seasonal movements is essential for success.

Snook Fishing Report – Tampa Bay & Gulf Coast

Snook had initially moved to their summertime zones as water temperatures rose to 80 degrees. However, the passing cold fronts dropped temperatures to around 65 degrees, drawing them back into transitional areas. As temperatures warm again, snook should return in greater numbers. Anglers should focus on mangrove edges, deeper cuts, and creek mouths, particularly on warmer afternoons when the sun heats the shallows. Deceivers and EP Baitfish patterns have been effective fly choices.

Redfish

Activity – Patterns & Behavior

Redfish continue to be a reliable target through the winter months due to their ability to tolerate a wide range of temperatures. They have been most active during the last part of

the outgoing tide and throughout the incoming tide, particularly when the “running out of environment” phase has passed. Many have been found in sand holes and along grass edges in areas with strong tidal flow. Effective patterns include shrimp and crab flies, as well as paddle tails on a light jig head.

Speckled Trout – Seasonal Movements & Tactics

Speckled trout have been holding near drop-offs adjacent to the flats or in deeper holes where they can adjust to temperature shifts. Some trout remain shallow, particularly following a recent cold front. On sunny days, a steady retrieve with a fly or artificial lure has been highly productive. Unlike other months, twitching the bait has not been as effective; instead, soft and subtle presentations have yielded better results. Weighted flies and slow-sinking lures have been the best options.

Best Fly Patterns & Artificial Lures

Snook: White or chartreuse EP Baitfish or small Deceivers

Redfish: Crab and shrimp patterns, paddle tails on a light jig head

Speckled Trout: Small baitfish imitations, weighted flies, and slowsinking lures

With water temperatures fluctuating, adjusting techniques based on conditions is key. While in March, fish activity

West Central Florida

comeback. For the past few years, numbers of fish and multiple year classes are beginning to show up.

Big gator trout are loners and do not seek to hang with schooling smaller trout. These larger trout can be found in the shallows and potholes early in the morning. They can be found around the mouths of mosquito ditches and creeks and will eat big needlefish, finger mullet, scaled sardines, pinfish, and jumbo shrimp. For those in pursuit of these big gator trout that range in the upper 20-inch class and over, lures that walk-thedog, like the MirrOlure 94MR18 Top Dog, the Rapala Skitterwalk, and Heddon Zara Spook can be deadly. Soft plastics like the DOA Shallow Running Baitbuster and the DOA Shrimp are excellent choices when fishing moving water areas around sand or oyster bars. Working these lures with slow presentations or drifting with the current will get the attention of big specks.

After months of being buried in work, I finally had a chance to wet a line again. The past ten months have been a whirlwind as I transitioned into a completely new career field, dedicating everything to a major project. The hard work paid off when my team’s efforts exceeded expectations—what was supposed to be a 30-day review process for 75 documents was essentially wrapped up in just two and a half days. The client was so impressed after reviewing only three of them that they pivoted to other matters and signed off on our contractual obligations. Hearing that feedback lifted a massive weight off my shoulders, making all the long hours and dedication worthwhile. Though I had barely fished in the past three months due to my workload, I decided to celebrate by hitting the local canals and reconnecting with the water.

I loaded up my bike and set off, eager to see what was biting. My first spot, where I had high expectations, unfortunately, didn’t yield even a single bite. Disappointed but not discouraged, I moved to the second spot, where I managed to catch one

bass. As I biked toward my next destination, I hit a pothole, and my back tire popped—an unexpected setback. With no other option, I pressed on, walking along the canal and casting into promising spots.

When I arrived at my third spot, I was greeted by an unexpected sight—a 5 1/2-foot iguana basking in the sun atop the spillway. It was so relaxed that it had its eyes closed, completely unbothered by my presence. As I made my way down to the water, it gave me a cautious glance but soon realized I was only there to fish. It relaxed again, and I got to work. Within ten minutes, I had landed around seven fish, mostly bass, with a few bigmouth sleeper fish mixed in. It was a great reminder of why I love this hobby so much.

Feeling a little adventurous, I decided to see how close I could get to the iguana. I slowly crept up and managed

Spring has started showing in our local area. Plenty of sunshine and weak fronts, pushing through the area. Anglers are enjoying fantastic days, wrangling a wide variety of species.

Water temperatures have been hanging in the low seventies the past week due to some rain runoff, with that schooling fish like mackerel, bluefish, jacks, croaker and sharks have been prevalent. DOA 3” shad tail, Rapala, skitter walks and live bait have been best baits.

Linesider action has been great along structured areas day and night. Anglers have been using live bait DOA 4” jerk baits and Rapala x raps to get hooked up with snook. Both sides of the tides produce great bites, key is finding clean water. The four different species of snook have been caught the past week.

Tarpon fishing during the new moon produced bites. Higher high tides and negative tides flushed baits into holes and passes where tarpon roamed. Rolling fish witnessed by anglers set pinpoints to present baits in there vicinity. Tarpon ranged in size from 5 to 60 pounds.

March has brought typical spring weather, moderate winds plenty of sunshine and spectacular fishing. Anglers are enjoying their holiday

break and vacation’s wrangling a plethora of species.

Snook a fan favorite, abundant along docks and sea walls on both side of the tides. Mangrove shore lines also holding snook willing to take Rapala x raps and live bait. Fat snook and common snook have been the dominant species the past week, a few tarpon snook, have been caught as well.

Tarpon fishing continues to thrive along deep channels and holes. Live bait and Doa terror eyz best baits to use for the silver King. Anglers are enjoying catching tarpon ranging from 5 to 60 pounds. Anglers are always amazed at the acrobatic jumps and leaves these fish. Sure do you like to put on a show.

Anglers looking for a steady plethora of species they catch. The flats and channels are still teaming with a wide variety of species like jacks, bluefish, ladyfish, mackerel, snapper, sharks and a few Pompano. Doa curl tail shrimp worked near the bottom, great tactics to get the strike.

Well that is the fishing report for the past week, hope you all enjoyed. Remember you can’t catch them

bike tire, called a buddy to pick me up so I wouldn’t have to push my bike three miles home.

Despite the hiccups, I took the day as a blessing—a chance to spend time in prayer, reflect on recent successes, and enjoy the outdoors. And with a bountiful catch, I couldn’t have asked for a better way to celebrate the end of such an intense work period.

Tania and I send our best wishes to all fellow anglers. May your fishing adventures be safe, blessed, and filled with tight lines and good times! Until next time, keep casting and chasing those dreams on the water.

UNITED STATES COAST GUARD FLOTILLA 7-16 OFFERS SAFE BOATING CLASSES IN GULFPORT, FL, MEETS THE THIRD WEDNESDAY OF EACH MONTH. These classes qualify the attendee for the FWC Safe Boating Card. This card is required for most people born after January 1, 1988 to legally operate a power boat with greater than 10hp motor in Florida. The one-day class includes instruction on safety equipment, boat handling, rules of the road, navigation aids, communications, trailering, legal requirements and others. Power and sailboats are covered, as well as personal watercraft. Of course, besides making a boater in compliance, the main goal of the class is to create a safer boater. Classes are offered on the second Saturday of each month. To sign up, contact Marty Richardson at (630)674-5352. Flotilla 7-16 also performs free courtesy vessel safety inspections for power and sail boats, personal watercraft, and paddle craft. The inspector will come to your location, inspect the required safety features of your vessel, and if you pass will provide a safety sticker to mount on your vessel. The inspection is a courtesy, so no action is taken if problems are found. But the vessel owner then knows of any deficiencies to correct before having an accident or being sanctioned by the Coast Guard. To get more information or to schedule an inspection, contact Howard Bush at (305)731-3580. Anyone interested is invited to attend. Contact Flotilla Commander Howard Bush for more information at (305)731-3580.

A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUART

Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating.

But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par?

To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2022 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. These trained VSC examiners from the local squadron will point out safety features such as minimum requirements required by the U.S. Coast Guard, examine fundamental mechanical aspects of your vessel, and answer questions how you can have more fun safely on the water. These are just a few of the many discussion points covered in this voluntary examination. As an added plus, Vessel Safety Checks are free to boat owners. And if you don’t “pass muster” with the thorough examination, the summary report is yours and yours alone. No record of any possible deficiencies will be reported to the USCG, state agency or any other authority. Want to know more about this complimentary Vessel Safety Check program? Contact Peter

Burns at (772) 486-2684 or burnspet@aol. com. St. Lucie River Power Squadron, one of more than 300 squadrons nationwide, also offers safe boating classes to the public. Check on their website, www.slrps.org, when classes will resume. Information about the parent organization is available at www.usps. org.

Twiggy, the Waterskiing squirrel

In 1978, a baby squirrel was rescued after being blown from her nest during a hurricane. Lou Ann and Chuck Best chose to take her in and make her a part of their family. Twiggy the world-famous water-skiing squirrel has been entertaining adults and children alike with her water ski show since 1979. Due to her husband’s passing in 1997, Lou Ann decided to make water safety an important part of Twiggy’s act. She created a squirrel-sized life jacket for Twiggy to wear in her performances. Thereafter, all of Twiggy’s shows are focused on teaching her fans about water safety. Today, Twiggy starts a new chapter in her legacy. Lou Ann’s son, Chuck Best Jr. has decided to take on the family business and continue Twiggy’s story. Chuck and his fiancé, Toni, have reimagined his parents’ show and together they have embarked on an all-new,

revamped, interactive and exciting show for Twiggy. Twiggy is now the spokes animal for The National Safe Boating Council’s “Wear It” Campaign promoting water safety all over the world.
