MIDWOOD HIGHSCHOOL KEY CLUB NEW YORK DISTRICT DIVISION 9 VOLUME 3 ISSUE 5Â

WHAT IS KEY CLUB? KEY CLUB INTERNATIONAL IS A SERVICE LEADERSHIP PROGRAM OF KIWANIS INTERNATIONAL. ITS THE OLDEST AND LARGEST SERVICE ORGANIZATION FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AND GIVES ITS MEMBERS OPPORTUNITIES TO PROVIDE SERVICE, BUILD CHARACTER AND DEVELOP LEADERSHIP SKILLS. STARTED IN CALIFORNIA IN 1925, KEY CLUB TODAY THRIVES ON MORE THAN 5,000 HIGH SCHOOLS WITH A MEMBERSHIP OF 270,000 IN 38 COUNTRIES, INCLUDING NORTH AMERICA, CARIBBEAN NATIONS, CENTRAL AND SOUTH AMERICA, ASIA AND AUSTRALIA. KEY CLUB ATTRIBUTES ITS SUCCESS TO THE FACT THAT IT IS A STUDENT-LED ORGANIZATION THAT TEACHES LEADERSHIP THROUGH SERVING OTHERS. AS MEMBERS OF THE KIWANIS INTERNATIONAL FAMILY, KEY CLUB MEMBERS BUILD THEMSELVES AS THEY BUILD THEIR SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITIES. AMONG THE OPPORTUNITIES PROVIDED TO MEMBERS ARE: ● LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT ● VOCATIONAL GUIDANCE ● COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS ● SERVICE-LEARNING ● PERSONAL ENRICHMENT ● VALUE-ADDED MEMBER BENEFIT PROGRAMS ● LIABILITY INSURANCE COVERAGE ORIGINALLY, KEY CLUB ADOPTED AS ITS MOTTO, “WE BUILD,” THE SAME MOTTO AS KIWANIS INTERNATIONAL. IN 1976, THE PROGRAM CHANGED ITS MOTTO TO, “CARING—OURWAY OF LIFE,” TO MORE CLEARLY CONVEY MEMBERS’ REASONS FOR HELPING OTHERS. DUES PAID BY EVERY MEMBER FUND KEY CLUB. ITS OFFICERS ARE HIGH SCHOOL LEADERS ELECTED BY THE MEMBERS AT DISTRICT AND INTERNATIONAL CONVENTIONS.

ABOUT KEY CLUB Leadership » Leadership is grounded in humility and service to others. A true leader listens, recognizes, and empowers.

Character Building » Character is built by everyday acts of kindness, integrity and teamwork to grow stronger relationships and communities.

Caring » Compassion for others is a cornerstone of the Key Club experience, inspiring action and service to one’s community.

Inclusiveness » We welcome people of all backgrounds and ethnicities to join in serving and making a positive difference in our world.

KEY CLUB MISSON STATEMENT: KEY CLUB IS AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT-LED ORGANIZATION WHICH PROVIDES ITS MEMBERS WITH OPPORTUNITIES TO PROVIDE SERVICE, BUILD CHARACTER AND DEVELOP LEADERSHIP.

KEY CLUB PLEDGE: I PLEDGE, ON MY HONOR, TO UPHOLD THE OBJECTS OF KEY CLUB INTERNATIONAL; TO BUILD MY HOME, SCHOOL, AND COMMUNITY; TO SERVE MY NATION AND GOD, AND COMBAT ALL FORCES WHICH TEND TO UNDERMINE THESE INSTITUTIONS.

OBJECTIVE OF KEY CLUB KEY CLUB AIMS TO COOPERATE WITH SCHOOL PRINCIPALS AND TEACHERS TO PROVIDE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WITH INVALUABLE EXPERIENCE IN LIVING AND WORKING TOGETHER AND TO PREPARE THEM FOR USEFUL CITIZENSHIP. OUR MEMBERS DEVELOP INITIATIVE AND LEADERSHIP SKILLS BY SERVING THEIR SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITIES. IN DOING SO, WE HOPE TO PROMOTE AND ACCEPT: ● TO GIVE PRIMACY TO THE HUMAN AND SPIRITUAL, RATHER THAN TO THE MATERIAL VALUES OF LIFE. ● TO ENCOURAGE THE DAILY LIVING OF THE GOLDEN RULE IN ALL HUMAN RELATIONSHIPS. ● TO PROMOTE THE ADOPTION AND APPLICATION OF HIGHER STANDARDS IN SCHOLARSHIP, SPORTSMANSHIP AND SOCIAL CONTACTS. ● TO DEVELOP, BY PRECEPT AND EXAMPLE, A MORE INTELLIGENT, AGGRESSIVE AND SERVICEABLE CITIZENSHIP. ● TO PROVIDE A PRACTICAL MEANS TO FORM ENDURING FRIENDSHIPS, TO RENDER UNSELFISH SERVICE AND TO BUILD BETTER COMMUNITIES. CARINGKIND'S ALZHEIMER'S WALK I VOLUNTEERED AT THE CARINGKIND 2018 ALZHEIMER'S WALK AT CONEY ISLAND BOARDWALK. WHEN I ARRIVED, I WAS GROUPED WITH OTHER KEY CLUB MEMBERS. WE WERE ASSIGNED WITH OUR FIRST TASK, WHICH WAS TO DIRECT THE WALKERS FROM THE TRAIN STATION TO THE STARTING LINE OF THE WALK. AFTERWARD, WE WENT BACK TO THE BOARDWALK AND DECIDED TO WALK AROUND AND SEE THE DIFFERENT SPONSORS, SOME INCLUDED COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER AND EMPIRE BLUE CROSS BLUE SHIELD. WHEN THE WALK BEGAN, ALL THE VOLUNTEERS LINED UP ON THE SIDE OF THE STARTING LINE TO CHEER FOR THE PARTICIPANTS TILL THEY REACHED THE FINISH LINE. THERE WERE MANY PEOPLE THAT DEVOTED THEIR TIME TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS CHARITABLE EVENT. BEFORE THIS EVENT, I WASN’T AWARE ABOUT ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE. HOWEVER, AFTER PARTAKING IN THIS EVENT, IT GAVE ME MORE INSIGHTS ON HOW ALZHEIMER’S EFFECT PEOPLE IN THEIR DAILY LIVES. - STEPHANIE WEI MEMBER

MY EXPERIENCE WITH THE MIDWOOD KEY CLUB AT THE ALZHEIMER'S WALK EVENT SERVED AS A NEW LEARNING EXPERIENCE. WE CHEERED ON THE PARTICIPANTS AS THEY WENT ON THE WALK. SEEING THE PARTICIPANTS EXPRESSIONS WAS EXTREMELY ENCOURAGING AND REALLY GOT ME EVEN MORE EXCITED ABOUT CHEERING THEM ON. EVERYONE WAS CHEERING, EITHER WITH BELLS OR EVEN FLAGS. THOSE FROM OTHER SCHOOLS WERE VERY EXCITED ABOUT JOINING THE EVENT, CAUSING THE ATMOSPHERE OF VOLUNTEER STUDENTS TO BECOME HIGHER. ALSO, I MET ANOTHER STUDENT FROM MADISON HIGHSCHOOL WHO WAS VOLUNTEERING. OVERALL, THE ALZHEIMER WALK WAS A GOOD EXPERIENCE MEET NEW PEOPLE AND HELP SUPPORT A GOOD CAUSE! - GARRETT LEE MEMBER

SEPTEMBER DIVISIONAL THE SEPTEMBER DIVISIONAL WAS JUST LIKE ANY OTHER DIVISIONAL: AMAZING AND INFORMATIONAL. THIS MONTHS DIVISIONAL WAS HELD AT JOHN DEWEY HIGHSCHOOL AND WE DISCUSSED PAST AND FUTURE EVENTS WITH ALL THE OTHER CLUBS IN DIVISION 9. MANY CLUBS PARTICIPATED IN THIS EVENT INCLUDING MADISON , BTECH, JOHN DEWEY, AND OF COURSE MIDWOOD. DURING THIS DIVISIONAL, THE MEMBERS AND OFFICERS SAT ATTENTIVELY LISTENING TO ALL THE EVENTS ALL THE DIVISION 9 CLUBS PREVIOUSLY HAD AND WILL HAVE. ATTENDING THIS DIVISIONAL, AS WELL AS FUTURE ONES, ARE VERY IMPORTANT IN ALLOWING US TO MEET PEOPLE IN DIFFERENT HIGH SCHOOL CLUBS, AS WELL THOSE ON THE DIVISION 9 BOARD.

COMING TO THESE DIVISIONS ALSO MAKE US FEEL VERY PROUD AS WE GET TO HEAR ALL THE EVENTS WE ATTENDED AND WHAT A DIFFERENCE WE MADE IN OUR COMMUNITY. THIS DIVISIONAL WAS PRETTY EXCITING AS WE GOT TO PLAY ICEBREAKERS TO GET TO KNOW ONE ANOTHER BETTER. THIS MONTH, THE ICEBREAKER WAS CALLED EVOLUTION WHERE WE ALL STARTED OUT AS CHICKENS AND EVOLVED TO HIGHER LEVELS SUCH AS CHICKEN, PTERODACTYL, AND MORE, ALLOWING US TO HAVE FUN AT THE SAME TIME

Key Clubber Of The Month!

YESENIA PEREGRINA

"Yesenia Peregrina deserves the September Key Member of the month award because of her demonstration of leadership, inclusiveness and diligence throughout the organization. Yessenia has recently attended the CareKind Alzheimer’s walk in Coney Island. At this walk, Yesenia took charge by guiding walkers from the train station to the walk itself. She made sure all walkers received the correct directions and even offered to walk them there. Yesenia urges new key club members attending events to say hello and approach walkers. Yesenia decades hours to volunteering with our club. She is a wonderful example of a “key” key clubber." Daniel Clarke President
