Editors Note

Hey Midwood Key Clubbers! I'm Trey, your new bulletin editor for the '23- '24 service year! This is the April-May '23 Issue. Though it was AP and finals season keyclubbers were still dedicated in service! This newsletter and more to come are to spotlight you guys. Keyclubbers are the ones who make up the club and submit articles to interpret the hard work you've done. Newsletter submissions are posted shortly after events happen on the Google Classroom. Just a reminder that Key club events do continue in the summer and carry into September when school starts back. Some of our past summer events included tote bag and phone charm making, Garden revamp, and one we hope to bring back with other nyc clubs: Coney Island fundraiser. Key Club is a all year round act of service!

Letter From Our LTG Hello, NYKDC and Sharks! Hope you all are well!! If you don't know me, I am the Lieutenant Governor for the 2023-2024 service year! I am so excited to be working with all of you! I am overjoyed to have started my term with such determined and creative individuals. I hope that you give me the opportunity to listen to all of you and carry through with some of the ideas that you may have. I'm here to serve and help you, and with some work and motivation, in the near future, we will all see this division grow and flourish! We have great challenges and a lot of obstacles to overcome, so let's make the best of it Division 9! I love you all and if you have any questions or concerns please reach out! Yours in care and service, Anastasia Ababiy Lieutenant Governor of Division 9 division9@nydkc.org

Meet the 23-24 Board!

President

23-24 Board! Hi guys! In case you don’t know me, my name is Dana, and I’m your Midwood HS Key Club Pres! I LOVE playing the guitar, played chess for over almost a decade now, and listen to Laufey religiously. I can’t wait to see we can do as a club together <3

Dana Hey Key Clubbers! My name is Juliette Gitina, I’m a sophomore, and your Vice President!!! During this service year, I hope to accomplish more member retention. What this essentially means is that I want to recruit more students, especially those that are eager to assist their community through service projects, fundraisers, and volunteering events, into becoming official members. However, what I’m most looking forward to during my service year is not only increasing attendance in volunteering events but also connecting with fellow Key Club members!

10 SUZUME MOVIE FUNDRAISER

x Midwood x Millennium x Francis Lewis

"During the Marine Park Cleanup, the alliance leaders were all really kind. They offered us gloves and free merchandise. We even got snacks. I enjoyed decorating the old historic house with easter decorations! - Joanna Lin"

"The event was incredibly fun and I think the movie choice was great. I wasn’t expecting Suzume to be sad but it made me cry at some points and was a nice experience. Everybody there was kind and things went smoothly. I went with my younger sister and it was fun. The area of the theatre was cool too because we got to tour union park after." - Mehr Chowdhury

Marine Park Clean Up APRIL 1

"At the Marine Park event, each volunteer was assigned to do a different task, like collecting trash, breaking branches, or weeding their sidewalks. Despite the rain we had to face on the day of the event, the rain made it much easier for us to weed the gardens and extract the plants from their roots. The faculty there were very kind and checked up on us consistently, offering us tools to make our tasks easier. I also really appreciated the snacks and water we all received at the end of the event as a reward." - Jocelyn Yee

Marine Park Clean Up Contd. "We were given tasks such a taking out the weeds across the perimeter of the building, using gloves and a shovel. At one point it started to rain and worms were crawling out of the dirt, which wasn’t the best experience. However, clearing out the weeds on the entire block was a rewarding experience, since we were able to help ourselves to free snacks and t-shirts afterwards."Faiza Soha

"During the Marine Park Cleanup, the alliance leaders were all really kind. They offered us gloves and free merchandise. We even got snacks. I enjoyed decorating the old historic house with easter decorations! -Joanna Lin"

"When I arrived it was raining. We were given gloves and tools and assigned where to clean. I was assigned to cleaning the path of weeds with one other person and we worked together down the path. Once the event was over it stopped raining and we got snacks then took a group photo. - Ivy Quan"

Japan Fest

13

3/26 TO 4/30

"As soon as I got to the event for my shift, I immediately realized there was tons of people lining up for the delicious food stalls that were put out. It was one of my few times volunteering and I thought it was tedious, however, there was many people that were asking questions about the food stall I was helping at, I believe it improved my public speaking skills. It was not bad if there were friends that came along. I had fun overall."-Ya Xian

"We were all given large poles with signs, and managed the lines of vendors. We stood for about 4 hours until our shift was over. At the end, we were given free ramen tickets which was really nice."-Annie Tran

"We set up japan flags that depicted which vendors were selling Japanese food and drinks. We then stood with “end of line” signs that showed the vendor we were standing for. We also answered questions that attendees had about the event. It was also really fun looking at what the cultures offered at the event."Juliette Gitina

"The event was really fun. There was a huge variety of stores in which you could purchase delicious food. I really enjoyed it although it was really crowded." Helen Lu

CPR Certification

15

APRIL 22 "Today was the CPR certification event for key club it was so exciting and now i feel ready than ever to help anyone in need"Anastasia Ababiy (LTG)

"We learned how to perform CPR and prevent choking on adults and infants. We practiced on dummies, learned the Heimlich maneuver and mouth to mouth resuscitation. We also used the device that provides a shock to get the person breathing and out of cardiac arrest. I enjoyed learning how to do it because it was entertaining with friends and also very insightful. We got sandwiches in the end too, and we got an email with official certification on CPR."-Cayla Alba

5 Boro Bike Tour MAY 7

"At the 5 Boro bike event, bike riders gathered for a marathon across all 5 boroughs. Key club volunteers helped at the rest stations with whatever was needed to make the event a success. What I like most about the event was the fact the hosts rewarded us afterwards for our hard work with food. It made my time feel worth it"-Erica Xu

"During this event, I helped bikers who were participating in the 5 Boro Bike Tour to pick up their registration. We scanned their QR codes, matched them up to the name that came up on the computer with their ID, gave them their bike stickers, and a bag that contained supplies they may need during the Bike Tour. I also enjoyed meeting and conversing with all the bikers who were signing in." -Juliette Gitina

CB 10 Park Clean Up

17

MAY 20

"During this event, key clubbers were split into two groups who either painted park benches or pulled weeds out. I chose to be part of the weed pulling group. I really enjoyed talking to key clubbers from the other key clubs in division 9. I was able to make new friends all while pulling weeds out in order to beautify the park."-Juliette Gitina
