MANIFESTO The Moodboarders is a glance into the design world, capable of capturing, in all of its many facets, what is extraordinary in the everyday. It is a measure of the times. It is an antenna sensitive enough to pick up on budding trends, emerging talents, and overlooked aesthetics. It is an adventure towards discovering the most original creativity. It is a savoury mix of contemporary news acquired through persistent involvement in even in the farthest corners of the design world, as well as an occasional dive into fashion, seeing as the two go hand in hand.

The Moodboarders Magazine è un occhio spalancato sul mondo del progetto, in tutte le sue multiformi declinazioni, capace di cogliere, anche nel quotidiano, lo straordinario. È la misura della temperatura epocale. È l’antenna sensibile capace di captare le tendenze sul nascere, i talenti che sbocciano, le estetiche trascurate. È un viaggio avventuroso alla scoperta delle creatività più originali. È una miscela sapida di notizie contemporanee, recuperate grazie alla frequentazione assidua del mondo del design, conosciuto nelle sue più segrete pieghe e, saltuariamente, in quello della moda, poiché le due discipline si tengono per mano.

COEXISTENCE From recent fashion exhibitions and presentations and special locations found during holiday getaways, to noteworthy designers’ expressions of an intimate and sometimes obscure artistic language, a collage of images and sensations that recount a season filled with unlikely coexistences.

New York’s MOMA hosted the “Are Clothes Modern” exhibition in 1944. Curated by Bernard Rudofsky, the collection reflected on the postwar opposition between pants and skirts and the superfluous and practical, using fashion as lens reflecting on recent social changes.

Seventy years later, Paola Antonelli, MOMA’s curator of the architectural and design department, has reopened Rudolsky’s concept with her exhibit, “Items: Is Fashion Modern?”.

Running from October 1, 2017, to January 28, 2018, the exhibition features 111 iconic pieces from the twentieth-century, confronting various themes, including changing silhouettes, the mixture of fashion and sportswear, new fabrics, ethnic garments and stylistic innovations, to name a few. This century’s fashion is represented by unforgettable items that went beyond trends to become iconic pieces. The exhibition’s title poses the question of which other pieces could be part of the garments and accessories present in the gallery, all surpassing the wear of time, remaining transversal during seasonal and epochal “revolutions”.

Nel 1944 il Moma di New York con la curatela di Bernard Rudofsky ospitò una mostra sulla moda dal titolo “Are Clothes Modern?” per riflettere in piena seconda guerra mondiale sull’opposizione tra gonna e pantaloni, tra superfluo e indispensabile, utilizzando la moda come lente per riflettere sui cambianti sociali.

A settant’anni di distanza Paola Antonelli, curatrice del dipartimento architettura e design del Moma, riprende il concetto di Rudofsky con la mostra intitolata “Items: Is Fashion Modern?”, (dal 1 ottobre 2017 al 28 gennaio 2018) che espone 111 pezzi iconici del guardaroba del XX secolo affrontando temi chiave, quali i mutamenti della silhouette, le contaminazioni tra moda e sport, i nuovi materiali, gli abiti etnici, le innovazioni stilistiche… La moda del nostro secolo è raccontata attraverso pezzi indimenticabili che hanno saputo superare le tendenze per affermarsi come icone. Il punto interrogativo nel titolo è un invito a riflettere su quali altri pezzi potrebbero rientrare in questa galleria di abiti e accessori che non patiscono l’usura del tempo, capaci di traversare indenni “le rivoluzioni” stagionali ed epocali.

LARA LANDI’S OLIVE OIL MILL On one of Maremmana’s parched stretches of land, strewn over rough, white stone, hiding behind a collapsed facade, is a building resembling that constructed by Gustave Eiffel, responsible for the eponymous tower. It is Lara Landi’s olive oil mill, built by her husband, who has proven to be an inventive and skilled carpenter. The central, open courtyard hosts an Etruscan-inspired, metal pony, another expertly crafted work by her husband. The burnished metal archways, reminiscent of the Eiffel tower, illuminated by candlelit lanterns seemingly stolen from one of King Arthur’s tales, accompany an olive oil tasting that leads deep into a white, metal tunnel lined with Lara’s selected furnishings and massive, cylindric aluminum oil wells. The unforgiving landscape and crumbling facade lie in contrast to the industrial interior, the complete opposite of Tuscan and agricultural tradition. The result is a sure sign of daring contamination that exhibits the harmonious possibilities of design dissonance.

Nella riarsa pianura Maremmana, su una bianca pietraia di sassi aguzzi, dietro una diroccata facciata in pietra, sorge un’architettura che pare una opera della ditta Gustave Eiffel, il famoso autore della omonima torre. E’ il frantoio di Lara Landi, costruito dal marito, rivelatosi provetto e inventivo carpentiere. Nel cortile centrale a cielo aperto scalpita un cavallino in metallo ripreso da un disegno etrusco, anch’esso opera virtuosa del marito di Lara. Lo spazio adibito alla degustazione degli oli, poiché di un frantoio si tratta, percorso da archi in metallo brunito che rimandano nel loro intreccio alla torre Eiffel, illuminato da lampadari a candele che paiono rubati alla saga dei cavalieri di Re Artù, arredato con pezzi di recupero scelti da Lara Landi, è percorso sui lati lunghi da tunnel in metallo verniciati all’interno di bianco dove riposa l’olio in grandi contenitori cilindrici in acciaio. E’ dirompente il contrasto tra il paesaggio riarso, la facciata diroccata in pietra e l’architettura in stile industriale dell’interno, estranea alla tradizione toscana e all’immaginario legato all’attività agricola. L’originale progetto si rivela un valido esempio di coraggiose contaminazioni, dimostrando le possibili armoniose convergenze delle discordanze

FERNANDO

Fernando and Humberto, the Campana brothers, are a design duo hailing from Brazil and known throughout the world.

They work as a team, despite having two very different personalities, which at the beginning of their partnership, proved to be a happy medium, and today, they are progressively exploring through individual artistic creations. Architect and younger of the two, Fernando, has included painting and small-scale sculptures in his latest creations. Rome’s Galleria O, who claims Fernando and Humberto amongst its list of artists, hosted the “Notturno 1” exhibit during October, 2017, highlighting Fernando’s “Macacos” paintings. They depict monkeys enclosed in gilded frames, seemingly assembled with random fragments representing pieces of antiquity. “Notturno 1” includes pen drawings from the Bateria e Morbido series, as well as several design pieces derived from it. The point is to exhibit Fernando’s work not only as a precursor to the development of furnishing, but as a corpus of autonomous work, an expression of his intimate, obscure language. Fernando’s current work also revolves around collages of small-scale sculptures, including one created just for me. surprise to be admired in the splendor of their original state.

I fratelli Campana, Fernando e Humberto, designer paulisti noti in tutto il mondo, pur lavorando in coppia sono due personalità molto diverse, che hanno trovato, agli esordi del loro sodalizio, una felice convergenza delle loro poetiche e che, progressivamente, stanno esprimendosi anche con creazioni artistiche personali.

Tra le ultime realizzazioni di Fernando, il più giovane dei due fratelli, laureato in architettura, ci sono anche opere pittoriche e minisculture. La galleria O di Roma, che annovera tra i suoi artisti di punta Fernando e Humberto Campana, ha proposto nel mese di ottobre 2017 la mostra Notturno 1, destinata a evidenziare il contributo di Fernando Campana, con l’esposizione di una serie di suoi dipinti “Macacos”, raffiguranti delle scimmie, caratterizzati da artistiche cornici dorate, create assemblando in maniera apparentemente casuale dei frammenti di esemplari antichi.

Notturno 1 comprende anche dei disegni inediti a penna della serie Bacteria e Morbido e alcuni primi pezzi di design da essi derivati. L’obiettivo della rassegna è di esporre i disegni di Fernando, non solo come materiale complementare per lo sviluppo degli arredi, ma come corpus di lavori autonomi, espressione di un suo linguaggio intimo e oscuro.

Appartiene all’attuale fase artistica di Fernando anche la miniscultura collage, creata per farne dono alla sottoscritta.

M A R TA F E R R I Marta Ferri, the daughter of famous photographer Fabrizio, presented her latest collection of romantic garments in her apartment cum atelier in Piazza Borromeo during this past Milan fashion week. Marta has always created timeless looks using interior design fabrics; the choice certainly sets her apart from anything currently trending. Floral, pale damascene prints hug the silhouette closely around the waist, with rouching around the collar, and long skirts with soft folds, at times, with a slight train.

Warm colours, including vintage rose and gold, dominate, along with floral patterns. The small apartment, decorated with heirloom furnishing and vivacious touches of colour, served as the perfect frame for her timeless fashion. Marta’s creations are noteworthy without being showy, and communicate a noble, rare elegance thanks to the discretion of their designer.

Marta Ferri, figlia del famoso fotografo di moda Fabrizio, durante la settimana della moda milanese ha presentato la sua nuova collezione di abiti romantici nel suo appartamento/atelier affacciato su Piazza Borromeo. Marta propone da sempre una moda senza tempo, realizzata solo con tessuti utilizzati per l’arredamento, una scelta che affranca i suoi abiti dalla girandola delle tendenze. Fiorati, damascati, in pallide tinte unite, scivolano con eleganza sulla silhouette, slanciata da un punto vita alto e arricchita da rouches attorno alla scollatura e da pieghe morbide nelle gonne lunghe che, talvolta, accennano anche uno strascico.

Dominano i colori caldi, il rosa antico e l’oro, molte sono le fantasie fiorate, tutte piuttosto importanti. Il piccolo appartamento, arredato con mobili di famiglia e ravvivato da sprazzi di colore acceso, si è rivelato la cornice ideale per la sua moda senza tempo. Importanti, senza essere vistose, le creazioni di Marta trasmettono, con loro fogge nobili, la rara eleganza della discrezione che appartiene alla loro creatrice.

With his exhibition-experiment, Dermapoliesis, Matteo Cibic (pictured), offers up his version of the future; a sustainable ecosystem that lives, grows, dresses us and nourishes us .

Young Matteo Cibic has a passion for design in his DNA (his uncle Aldo helped found Memphis), and exhibits an ever-productive creativity nurtured by his curiosity for every angle of human knowledge. During London’s “100% Design”, Cibic presented Dermapoliesis at the Seeds gallery. The organically shaped ceramic pieces are enclosed in glass cases, resembling bacteria cultures. The tabletop sculptures represent a future world where flora and fauna self-reproduce without technological assistance, providing daily sustenance. Matteo’s boundless imagination brings a utopian world to life, created to inspire scientists in producing new organic materials in the lab. Matteo presented his “new creatures” in a theatrical set, with red velvet curtains, thin tables with “bumpy” legs, and multi-level shelving, all in white ceramic, which hosted the glass cases containing his imaginative embryos.

Il giovane Matteo Cibic con la passione per il design nel DNA (è nipote di Aldo, uno dei fondatori di Memphis) è dotato di una creatività bulimica, nutrita dalla curiosità per tutti i possibili campi dello scibile. Alla galleria Seeds di Londra, nell’ambito del recente festival “100% Design”, ha presentato Dermapoliesis, una serie di ceramiche di forme organiche racchiuse, come le colture batteriche, all’interno di campane di vetro. Queste nuove sculture da tavolo rappresentano un mondo futuro, abitato da una flora e fauna che si autoriproducono, senza supporti tecnologici, per fornire il fabbisogno vitale quotidiano. Con la sua fantasia, che non conosce confini, Matteo ci introduce in un nuovo mondo utopico, creato per ispirare gli scienziati a riprodurre in laboratorio nuovi materiali organici. Per presentare le sue “nuove creature” Matteo ha creato una scenografia teatrale, con tende di velluto rosso, esili tavoli di ceramica con gambe punteggiate da semi rotondi e scaffali a più ripiani, sempre in candida ceramica, per ospitare le campane in vetro che racchiudono gli immaginifici embrioni.

During Milan’s recent fashion week, an encounter between JJ Martin and Dimore Studio resulted in an unusual fashion presentation. Martin is founder of LaDoubleJ, a collection of vintage fashion and home accessories, and Dimore studio belongs to an interior design duo known for their daring hybrids mixing contemporary and vintage aesthetics. The Galleria Manzoni provided a space facing the street, that, having been decorated by Dimore Studio, hosted a temporary, refined yet theatrical bazar of sorts, featuring several new pieces by the studio, as well as a selection of LaDoubleJ’s vintage-inspired clothing. Dimore Studio designed a unique setting to frame JJ Martin’s collection; the contemporary backdrop makes reference to historical details, a perfect companion to Martin’s minimal garments printed with a flurry of retro patterns, created thanks to Mantero fabrics.

Durante la recente settimana della moda milanese, dall’incontro tra JJ Martin, designer della collezione di moda e piccola oggettistica vintage LaDoubleJ, e Dimore studio, il duo di interior designer sulla cresta dell’onda e promotori di coraggiose ibridazioni tra design vintage e contemporaneo, è nata una inusuale presentazione moda. Uno spazio della Galleria Manzoni, con vetrina su strada, arredato da Dimore studio, è diventato il teatro di un temporaneo, raffinato bazar, dove erano esposti e in vendita alcuni oggetti inediti di Dimore studio e una selezione delle proposte-moda, di sapore vintage, del marchio LaDoubleJ. L’originale cornice, ideata da Dimore studio, noto per la personale interpretazione del design contemporaneo, venata di colti riferimenti storici, si sposava alla perfezione con la temperatura della collezione di JJ Martin, giocata su capi basici realizzati, in una girandola di fantasie di gusto retrò, appositamente dalla tessitura Mantero.

For Sottsass’ 100 birthday, the Alpi company, in collaboration with Martino Gamper, re-edited a collection of his selected wood, “Il legno di Sottsass”.

Vittorio Alpi wrote in the project’s catalogue, “Ettore Sottsass asked us to create unique flooring in striped white and pink wood, resembling that of a collared shirt. And with that, a long, fruitful collaboration began. A year later, while visiting our company, Ettore noticed a strange cut of wood, and drew inspiration for another product from it…. ‘Il legno di Sottsass” was applied to various pieces of the Memphis furnishing collection. From that point on, Ettore constantly used that wood…I tried to give it new life, and a renewed sense of continuity. Encountering Martino Gamper made this possible; he exceeded every expectation! He immediately made his way to the workshop, and without speaking, picked up a saw, planer and glue, and began reinterpreting one of the pieces in an innovative way, without betraying its original identity.” The Re-Connection collection was designed following Gamper’s visit to the Alpi workshops. Gamper sawed off diverse angles of Sottsass’ wood, then cutting them into sheets: the resulting grain is distorted in three different ways. With the added mastery of a carpenter, Gamper created three pieces while on vacation in the mountains: a bookshelf, a credenza, and a screen, that together, “design” their own space. “Il legno Sottsass”, reinterpreted by Martino Gamper, brings new life once more to unique furnishings.

Nell’anno del centenario della nascita di Sottsass, l’azienda Alpi riedita “Il legno Sottsass”, grazie alla collaborazione con Martino Gamper. Nel catalogo che accompagna il progetto Vittorio Alpi scrive: “Ettore Sottsass mi chiese se potevamo realizzargli un pavimento particolarissimo, in legno bianco e rosa, tutto a righe come una camicia. Fu così che iniziò una collaborazione lunga e felice.

L’anno dopo, in visita allo stabilimento, Ettore notò un pezzo di legno un po’ strano; da quella ispirazione nacque un nuovo prodotto, “Il legno Sottsass” (…), che vide la luce applicato a diversi mobili della collezione Memphis del 1985. Da allora Ettore continuò sempre a usarlo (…) Ho tentato di dare a quel materiale un nuovo soffio di vita, un senso di rinnovamento e continuità. L’incontro con Martino Gamper ha reso possibile questa idea (…) Martino ha superato ogni speranza! Ha voluto andare subito in falegnameria. Senza parlare ha preso sega, pialla e colla e lo ha reinterpretato in maniera innovativa, mantenendone l’identità”. La collezione Re-Connection è nata a seguito della visita di Martino Gamper alla Alpi. Martino ha segato un grande blocco di legno Sottsass lungo angoli diversi. Tagliato in fogli di legno, la venatura risulta distorta in tre modi diversi. Con l’aiuto di un falegname altoatesino, durante la vacanza in montagna, Gamper ha creato tre pezzi: una libreria a parete, una credenza e un paravento, che insieme disegnano uno spazio. “Il legno Sottsass”, reinterpretato da Martino Gamper, rinasce per dare vita, di nuovo, a mobili speciali.
