MANIFESTO The Moodboarders is a glance into the design world, capable of capturing, in all of its many facets, what is extraordinary in the everyday. It is a measure of the times. It is an antenna sensitive enough to pick up on budding trends, emerging talents, and overlooked aesthetics. It is an adventure towards discovering the most original creativity. It is a savoury mix of contemporary news acquired through persistent involvement in even in the farthest corners of the design world, as well as an occasional dive into fashion, seeing as the two go hand in hand.

The Moodboarders Magazine è un occhio spalancato sul mondo del progetto, in tutte le sue multiformi declinazioni, capace di cogliere, anche nel quotidiano, lo straordinario. È la misura della temperatura epocale. È l’antenna sensibile capace di captare le tendenze sul nascere, i talenti che sbocciano, le estetiche trascurate. È un viaggio avventuroso alla scoperta delle creatività più originali. POLYCHROMATIC Albanian prime minister, painter and ex-basketball player Edi Rama accompanied 30 doctors and nurses to Italy at the height of the pandemic as a move of solidarity. He was interviewed by the Triennale di Milano’s president Stefano Boeri, and explained that he has asked citizens in Albanian towns to paint their homes in bright shades to make the cities more beautiful, taking into consideration that the country doesn’t have the same artistic patrimony as Italy. Gillo Dorfles reminded us that the pale Grecian ruins we often admire were once brilliantly colored. Color is essential to aesthetics and has a positive influence on health and attitude, and it is no surprise that when times are tough, vibrant shades take center stage. This issue of the Moodboarders is dedicated to color, and a glint of hope that better times are on their way.

Edi Rama, primo ministro dell’Albania, pittore ed ex cestista, quando ha accompagnato i trenta medici e infermieri in Italia, offerti per dare una mano, durante il picco della pandemia da Coronavirus, intervistato da Stefano Boeri, presidente della Triennale di Milano, ha raccontato di aver sollecitato i cittadini a colorare gli intonaci delle case per rendere più belle le città albanesi, che non possiedono capolavori al pari di quelle italiane. Gillo Dorfles era solito rammentare che gli antichi templi greci, dei quali ammiriamo le vestigia, erano colorati. Il colore è una componente essenziale dell’estetica e ha influssi positivi anche sulla salute e sull’umore. Non è un caso se, in periodi difficili, torna di prepotenza alla ribalta. La scelta di dedicare al colore questo numero di The Moodboarders vuole essere anche l’auspicio per una rinascita “felice”.

Nathalie du Pasquier EXHIBITS AT MACRO Rome’s Macro is hosting the first Italian personal exhibition dedicated to the work Nathalie du Pasquier. Born in Bordeaux in 1957, the artist and designer moved to Milan in 1979, joining the Memphis Group as a textile designer. She has been painting with oil and tempera since 1986, beginning with everyday objects on canvas, treating them as if they were portraits. She has since moved on to creating imaginative shapes far from anything that we would recognize in our daily lives; they are geometric subjects that resemble details of a still life with plays of light and shadow. Her figurative paintings have taken on an abstract quality despite the fact that the technique has always remained the same. Nathalie unveils an exceptionally personal approach to contemporary art, as well as an evolution of form and identity that doesn’t abandon the original surprise exhibited in primitive art.

Il Macro di Roma ospita la prima retrospettiva italiana di Nathalie du Pasquier, nata a Bordeaux nel 1957, arrivata a Milano nel 1979, artista e designer, che ha fatto parte del gruppo Memphis, sin dalla sua fondazione nel 1981, occupandosi soprattutto di disegni tessili. Dal 1986 ha iniziato a dipingere, oli e tempere. I soggetti delle sue opere policrome, all’inizio erano banali cose quotidiane, ritratte sulla tela, quasi fossero persone. In seguito Nathalie ha iniziato a costruire degli oggetti geometrici di fantasia, non più riconoscibili, estranei al nostro quotidiano, rappresentandoli come delle nature morte, molto in dettaglio, con le ombre e i riflessi. I suoi quadri figurativi hanno assunto un’aria astratta, sebbene la tecnica esecutiva sia rimasta la stessa. Nel panorama artistico contemporaneo Nathalie rivela un approccio molto personale, evoluto nella modalità di rappresentazione, ma in grado di conservare quello stupore che appartiene alle opere dei primitivi.

VILLAGE When Taiwanese artist Huang Yung Fu was informed that the village where he has dwelled for decades, recently as the only resident, was destined for demolition in the name of state reconstruction policy, he decided to paint every single surface with polychrome figures. The village has become a sort of rainbow comic strip, an artistic attraction, now a popular tourist destination. Quando l’artista taiwanese Huang Yung Fu, venne a sapere che il villaggio, dove aveva vissuto per vari anni, sarebbe stato demolito, in nome di una politica di ricostruzione statale, ormai rimasto unico residente, decise di dipingere ogni superfice disponibile con composizioni figurative policrome. Il villaggio, divenuto una sorta di fumetto nei colori dell’arcobaleno, divenne un caso e un’attrazione artistica. Preservato così dalla distruzione è meta di un flusso continuo di turisti.

Architectural

Textiles Montana born and Brooklyn based textile artist Amanda Browder has a Masters in sculpture and artistic installations, and travels to shape her site-specific, chromatically brilliant architectural installations. Meters and meters of colorful, patterned fabrics are draped over buildings, churches, and bell towers by the artist and her assistants, creating unusual structural patchwork. These abstract, fluid sculptures use a strong pop influence and a rainbow of colors to change the perception of a place.

L’artista tessile Amanda Browder, originaria del Montana, con al suo attivo due master, uno in scultura e l’altro in installazioni artistiche, attualmente residente a Brooklyn, ma sempre in viaggio per realizzare le sue creazioni variopinte, si dedica a interventi architettonici site-specific, utilizzando metri e metri di tessuti fantasia in colori brillanti. Assieme ai suo assistenti, avvolge e drappeggia case, chiese, campanili...creando inusuali patchwork architettonici. Considera le sue originali opere delle sculture soffici, di tipo astratto, in grado di modificare la percezione dei luoghi, grazie anche alla forte influenza pop del suo mix cromatico.

Polychromatic INTERIORS Studio ReutovDesign’s chef designer Dmitry Reutov thinks that the abundant colors used recently to decorate an apartment in Manhattan are an ode to joy, the same visual pleasure that an intense bouquet of flowers evokes. The 600 sq. M apartment was transformed with a selection of tropical inspired tones taken straight from a Mexican getaway. The terracotta shaded walls are adorned with green accents that extend to the flooring, joined by live flora and cacti. The marble-topped tables are paired with pink sofas, and terracotta-colored and sage curtains compliment the bathrooms painted in various green tones.

Dmitry Reutov, chief designer dello studio ReutovDesign, ritiene che l’abbondanza di colori del recente appartamento di Manhattan sia una sorta di inno alla gioia, perché procura un piacere visivo, simile a quello offerto da un intenso profumo di fiori. Nella ristrutturazione dell’appartamento di circa 600 mq ha introdotto, mediante la scelta cromatica, i sapori dei tropici, in particolare del Messico. Ai muri in terracotta rosa si abbinano le varie sfumature di verde, rubate alla natura, dei pavimenti e una profusione di piante e cactus. I tavoli hanno il piano in marmo venato; il rivestimento dei divani è in tessuto tramato di rosa; le tende sono color terracotta, oppure in verde germoglio e anche le pareti dei bagni sono dipinte di verde.

COLOR WILL SAVE US ALL Designer Yinka Ilori, English with Nigerian origins, uses color as a form of redemption. He grew up in Islington, just outside of London, and at 18, began searching for antiques to reinvent with colorful textiles. He opened his studio in 2011, and presented his first exhibition two years later, showing designs that narrated his personal narrative. He struck big in 2019 with an animated playground of colorful geometric shapes, and in 2021, he designed the Brit Awards trophy. He’s brought positive energy to denigrated areas with his chromatic murals. He’s noted that his public work isn’t for an elite niche, but for people of every color and provenance. He can’t wait to open the Yinka Ilori boutique hotel, where Nigerian food will certainly be served.

Le scelte cromatiche del designer inglese di origine nigeriana, 34 anni, Yinka Ilori, rappresentano il suo strumento di riscatto. Cresciuto a Islington, quartiere periferico di Londra, a 18 anni ricerca vecchi pezzi e li reinventa, rivestendoli di tessuto, o dipingendoli con colori vivaci. Nel 2011 apre il suo studio e due anni dopo presenta la sua prima mostra. Con il design racconta la sua storia. Il successo arriva nel 2019 con un parco giochi animato da motivi geometrici in colori brillanti. Nel 2021 ha ideato il trofeo per i Brit Awards. I suoi murales multicolori e i suoi messaggi di positività riqualificano gli spazi degradati. “Le mie opere pubbliche – dichiara - non sono destinate ai collezionisti che frequentano le gallerie di design artistico, ma sono per tutti, senza distinzione di censo, o di colore della pelle”. Il suo sogno nel cassetto è di realizzare il boutique hotel Yinka Ilori, dove servire cucina nigeriana.

BLUE Portland’s Yellena James paints organic marine shapes, coral, and jellyfish, all on her preferred Prussian blue background. The imaginative ecosystems invite onlookers to consider conservation or marine flora and fauna. The artist recently discovered that her favorite color is also used to remedy toxic metal poisoning, and has chosen to aptly name her work Antidoti. They are indeed antidotes that come alive with her vivid imagination and minute calligraphy. . Yellena James di Portland dipinge forme organiche, perlopiù marine, come coralli, meduse…su uno sfondo Blu di Prussia, il suo preferito, creando degli ecosistemi immaginari, pensati come invito a preservare la ricchezza della flora e della fauna marina. Appassionata da sempre del blu di Prussia, ha scoperto recentemente che questo colore può servire come rimedio per l’avvelenamento da metalli tossici. Da questa proprietà deriva anche il nome delle sue rappresentazioni, denominate Antidoti. E antidoti lo sono, anche grazie alla sua libera fantasia e al tocco lieve della sua minuziosa calligrafia.

P O S TC A R D S FROM UNSEEN places Vicente José de Oliveira Muniz, known as Vic Muniz, is a true traveler, both in real life, and within his own imagination. The artist hailing from San Paolo, Brazil paints postcards, each a freestyle collage of images collected throughout the world in photographic, imaginary, or cinematic form. Vic invents these unseen places from home, freely combining realistic caricatures of cities’ identities into fantastical locations. The images are crowded with both actual and created details and pervaded by a sort of horror vacui, yet they always have at least one recognizable detail that defines the overall design. Some of these include the Taj Mahal, the Eiffel Tower, and London’s iconic double decker buses.

Ciascuna è un libero assemblaggio d’ immagini rubate in giro per il mondo, viste dal vero o in fotografia e al cinema. Vic, stando a casa, mescola in libertà, gli stilemi di varie parti del mondo, ricostruendo a suo modo città immaginarie, nelle quali i vari elementi sono realistici, ma resi fantasiosi da un sottile gioco combinatorio.
