We’ve been going through a sort of abstinence with the cancellation of this year’s Salone del Mobile, due to return in 2021, and the absence of events and presentations that hardly can be replaced with webinars and virtual interviews with designers and entrepreneurs. We’ve heard many words, perhaps too many, but seen so little. We’ve been missing new, surprising, and daring things. We haven’t filled our minds with sights and nurtured our memories with unexplored sites. If our lives are a tapestry, as psychoanalyst Raffaele Morelli has put it (Pronto Soccorso per le emozioni, Mondadori, 2020), then we weave the coloured threads of new, iconic design into them day by day. I’ve researched and curated a collection of images of those projects that didn’t make their debut; these are the most surprising, to remind us that we can still be amazed and amused.
