| Editors Letter | Dear Morgan Knights, This has been an amazing year. It was filled with laughs and plenty of tears. We moved forward and backwards, but in the end I can honestly say we have surpassed our goals as to where we would stand today. Since I was a kid, I knew I wanted to lead, but man I promise I never thought it would be in this sense. I have worked with some of the most amazing artist, from a dynamic photographer to the most amazing contributors and everything in between. I have worked with endless publications. I never planned to have my own ever, I never planned to develop a brand known as the Ave I grew up passing my entire life. It took someone to push me to my lowest moment and cry the worst cry to begin the thing I think I am most proud of in my career. The Morgan, wow, the love I have for this magazine is endless. This is only year one, year two I am so ready for you. Thank you so much for taking this wild ride with my team and I, I love you all for that. Buckle up because you are in for the sickest ride yet! with hugs and kisses,

Fatiah Rebbekkah Muhammad Co-Editor in Chief / Creative Director Fatiah Rebbekkah Muhammad

WAYS TO HAVE

A

CHIC

HALLOWEEN

1. Implementing the iconic “pumpkin” to your Halloween decor, brings in the festiveness of the holiday without overwhelming the room.

2. Giving a bit of “danger” to your bookcase, countertop or window seal, with this Beware sign, gives an element of spook.

3. Tap into your dark side, by creating the Halloween vibe with a black curtain. Not only is it perfect for October but you can use it year round. Yes, I said year round, a black curtain is perfect for the summer to absorb the heat from those sun rays.

4. This bedazzled skull is so tre chic, not only does it show how fab you are but it also lends into the scare factor of Halloween!

5.

PILLOWS !!

Think of this little fuzzy guy as a fuzzy monster inspiring your inner goon!

This graphic pillow is a bit forward but shows your fun, festive side!

What is chicer than leather! It also plays perfectly into your Halloween decor to vamp it up Whats a holiday without shimmer, plus this can mellow out any darker shades utilized within your decor during Halloween, shining a light on your chic-a-tude I know, what is more cliche than orange for Halloween but that is just it, it works so use it

Not only is the pillow cool, but it also plays into the vibe you want to create, so plug it in with the fuzzy monster pillow or any of these amazing examples it will compliment them all. 6. A Throw, a fuzzy black one or a fun halloween patterned one to snuggle with while you watch those scary movies. And during the day amps that boring couch up.

There your have 6 cool ways to make your space Halloween ready, without getting to carried away. Unless of course you want to.

WTF!

Do You Know Your Rights? By Charlie O.

The news has been bombarded with stories lately of police brutality, and unexplained deaths of individuals while in police custody. All though the obvious question that needs to be asked and investigated and answered is, why? Why is this happening? Why are those who have chosen the profession to protect and serve, doing so much harm? Some may say this is not new; this is not something that is now happening. Some may say it has been happening for a long time, what is happening is social media is allowing the public to see more, people are catching everything on their iphones. What is the disconnect? Is it cultural? Is it simply someone who is not familiar with the people they have to work with so a

loathing is developed due to misinformation, prejudices, and plain old supremacy? Bottom line, do you know your rights and does it matter? According to Pixweb.com, “Governor Cuomo signed an executive order appointing a special prosecutor at the Attorney General office to handle cases involving unarmed civilians killed by police. Led by Alvin Bragg an experienced prosecutor and former assistant U.S. Attorney.â€? Police in New York were also given a memo that stated they couldnĘźt legally stop someone from filming police actions. Attempts to obstruct cameras, or ordering a citizen to cease constitute censorship and also violate the First Amendment. So film away citizens.

Jason Williams, an American Civil Liberties Union Lawyer, in a recent interview (www.independent.com) stated that, depending on which state you are in you may need to identify yourself. But you are legally permitted to deny making any further statement. You can simply say, “I choose not to answer that question.” That may work for some but may be the beginning of the end for others. Eric Broyles, attorney and author of “Encounter with Police: A Blackmanʼs guide to Survival”, stated that “Until we work through some of the cultural issues and training issues in police departments, my objective is to get people home safely. Thatʼs why the theme is comply now, contest later. Therefore: When you first see a police car pull over. Letting them know you are complying. Use your signal. Let them know they are in control by being polite and complying.

something in plain sight they can then search your vehicle. Such as an open beer can, wine bottle or drug paraphernalia. If you or your passenger is arrested your vehicle can be towed and an inventory search of the vehicles contents can be done without reasonable suspicion. Remember only get out of your car if the police ask you to. Let the officer do most of the talking do not interrupt. Do not be argumentative and donʼt say anything that the officer can record and use against you. The reality is you have the right to refuse consent to search. Police need probable cause to search a vehicle, which means an officer needs to see, smell or hear something that may be criminal to perform a search. Now if they have probable cause to search your vehicle, or if you have been placed under arrest, they can search you or your vehicle whether you give your consent or not. If you are stopped keep your hands visible on the steering wheel. Donʼt start looking through your pockets or pocketbook for your license does not take that time to look through your glove compartment. For all the officer knows you are looking for a gun. All of us are not law-abiding citizens and the job of law enforcement is a dangerous one. Answer questions asked, with yes or no. Officers are trained to let you incriminate yourself. Okay and I see are good noncommittal responses. Silence is often best it is not an admission of guilt and cannot be used against you. It is his or her job to prove your guilt. On the other hand some attorneys say silence only if you are guilty as sin. Staying silent may guarantee you a ticket, while a simple response may only get you a warning. Nonetheless, you are within your rights to remain silent. Visit knowmyrights.org to learn more about your rights in different situations.

• -Always be polite even if the officer is aggressive. • -Place your hands on steering wheel. • -Roll down window. • -Turn off engine. • -If it is nighttime turn on indicator light. Do not reach for documentation if an unmarked vehicle pulls you over politely asks for identification and badge. You can ask for a supervisor to come to the scene, or follow officer to police station. Do not give an officer an excuse to search your car. Donʼt through anything out the window. Donʼt slouch; you may look like you are hiding something. Keep calm. If an officer believes that you are armed or dangerous they can search you. If they have probable cause they can search your vehicle. If the officer views

I was given the pleasure of meeting and getting to know this amazing woman. A new-millennium woman to say the least. Here is look at what she shared.

DWAN ABRAMS

By: Denise Abrams

What prompted you to write your first novel? I wrote my first novel because I felt I had something to say. I was an avid reader and thought I had a story to tell. There was a fire burning inside of me that refused to go out. I had a job in corporate America, and I found myself growing more and more restless and unfulfilled. No matter how much money I earned, I didn’t feel satisfied. The feeling that something was missing wouldn’t go away. When I finally decided that I wanted to write a book, the stars aligned for me. Someone close to me purchased me my first laptop. You couldn’t tell me anything after that. I was a writing fanatic. I ate, slept, and drank my first manuscript. I would finish my work early so that I could use the rest of my day writing. I wrote at night, in the wee hours of the morning, and on the weekends. I wasn’t getting paid to write, but that didn’t matter to me. I just loved it. That’s how I knew I was destined to become a writer. ! It is often said that, it is easier to write from a place of knowledge. Was your first novel, The Scream Within, based on

some of your own experiences? I do agree that it’s easier to write from a place of knowledge. My first novel, The Scream Within, had a lot of “real life” elements. Some of the events in the book were inspired by my life and the lives of people I know. I believe that writing about subjects that are familiar to you not only makes the writing process easier, but the story itself is more organic. I have found that when I write about topics that are unfamiliar to me, it takes longer to write and doesn’t flow as easily. I usually take a break and start on a story that I know more about. I tend to finish those and they end up getting published. One thing I will say is that I do like to stretch myself. I don’t mind going into unfamiliar territory. I subscribe to the mantra, “No risk, no reward.” I have never been afraid to take chances. I have had readers get into heated debates about some of my characters and story lines. Human behavior fascinates me. I like creating

27

memorable characters that stick with the readers long after they close the book. That’s one of the reasons why I like to take familiar characters into new stories. For example, my books Divorcing the Devil and My Mother’s Child have an overlapping character. Married Strangers focused on three couples at different stages of their relationships, and When the Fairytale Ends showcases life after the engaged couple in Married Strangers gets married. My latest book, For the Sake of Love, deals with a love triangle regarding a couple in an earlier novella, Only True Love Waits. You have been awarded or nominated for a few Literary Awards. Which one meant the most to you? To me, being nominated for anything is an honor. Any literary recognition means a lot to me. I’m humbled by the fact that people read and enjoy my work. That means the world to me.

Tell us about, "Just Write!" and "SILK". Many times new writers feel like they are on the outside of the literary bubble looking in. They have so many questions about the writing industry as a whole and don’t know where to begin or who to ask. I have been both self-published and traditionally published, so I’m able to give insight into both. I created the Just Write! Workshop to give aspiring writers an outlet to get their questions about writing and publishing answered. The purpose of the workshop is to provide tips on writing and insight into the business of publishing. SILK stands for Sisters in Literary Kinship. I am the founding member of SILK. I, along with two of my literary sisters, went on a book tour where we would do book signings and make appearances together. When the group was founded, the members lived in close proximity to one another. Since then the members have become more spread out, making travel more difficult. I would definitely love to restart the group with new members. As a mentor is there a reoccurring issue that you come across?! What advice do you give? I remember being a tween and going through physical and emotional changes. I didn’t know whether I was a child or a woman. That can be a very confusing time for a young girl. That’s the reason I decided to become a mentor. I mentored my first student when I was only 18 years old, and I have been mentoring ever since. Most young girls grapple with their identity and finding their place in the world. Finding out who you are and wanting the acceptance of others can be emotionally draining. I encourage the girls that I mentor to respect themselves and their individuality. As for mentoring other writers, I tell them the truth. I don’t sugarcoat anything. A common issue that I have found for new writers is they want to know when they can quit their day job. The truth is maybe never. Writing is hard and should not be done for fame and riches. Many writers never become rich or famous, but they do it for the love of the craft. Just keep writing and never give up. If you write that great American novel, fantastic! Even if you don’t, that’s still fantastic. Why? Because you took a chance and finished what you started. When was the moment you realized you were living your dream? I have always had a separate world inside of my head. No matter what’s going on in the “real world” I keep my thoughts positive and light. In my mind, all is well, and if it’s not, it will be. I have never liked waking up early, and that’s one of the main things I disliked about going to work every day. I

also didn’t like having to be somewhere when I felt like being elsewhere. For me, I began living my dream the moment I left corporate America. The fact that I didn’t have to wake up to an alarm clock, sit in Atlanta traffic, and go somewhere I didn’t feel like going. Freedom was and is my dream. That’s what I strive for every day. I’m extremely grateful to spend time with my family. I can adjust my schedule to my life events rather than adjusting my life around a pre-set schedule. What is the most important thing a first time writer should know? There are so many important things a new writer should know. It’s hard to narrow it down to just one. If I had to pick something, the most important thing a first time writer should know is to respect the craft. Writers are readers. Read different genres and various authors. Take a writing class. Attend writing workshops and literary events. Join a writers group and network with other authors. Set aside time to write. Write something. The goal is to get what’s inside of your head onto paper. Are any of your novels going to the small or wide screen? "Lifetime" maybe? I would love to turn my books into movies. I’m working on it. If you could go anywhere in the world, no money required where would you go and why? I would go to Bali. Bali is known for having mind blowing beaches. As a Florida native, I love a good beach. What's next for Dwan Abrams? I look at life as an adventure. Every day is an opportunity to discover something new or different. I haven’t been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), but I wouldn’t be surprised if I have it. I’m currently working on a new novel. I recently co-authored a celebrity bio. I want to get into television and film and do more ghostwriting gigs. I’m always looking for new opportunities. I’m even working on my PhD. I stay busy, and that’s how I like it. LEARNING THROUGH PLAY

FIRST TIME IN SCHOOL OR RETURNING PARENTS REMEMBER CHILDREN LEARN AS THEY PLAY By: Charlie O. A story book is being read to a class of preschoolers, it appeared that the children being read to enjoyed the story and liked it even more when the reader used voices to create a more vivid picture for each character. The book is called Tingo Tango Mango Tree and it is written by Yvonne Vaughn. The moral of the story is the importance of sharing, and caring for those around us. The third time that the story is read the reader decided to choose one child in the group to begin the story as one of the characters. The story centers on a mango tree. The child asked the reader to wait so that he could get a block from the block area to be the mango seed. He proceeded to get other props as the story went on and then used the colored blocks to build the tree. He used brown blocks for the trunk of the tree, and green blocks for the leaves and branches. He then used one yellow block to be the mango. Play is a great way for an educator to observe the growth and development of children in their care. Children are free to express themselves, they are not inhibited and there are no rules on how to play

or who or what or where they can be. According to the Brainy Quote website, Play is defined as “To engage in sport or lively recreation: to exercise for the sake of amusement; to frolic; to sport.” Some parents when entering the classroom some parents complained that the children played too much. The teacher explains to them that this is the Childs time to express themselves with no boundaries, in a safe way to themselves and others. It is also a time for the teacher to observe and to talk with them about what it is they are doing. Children who normally do not express themselves in large group activities and come across a bit shy, are sometimes very expressive when they are playing. The children during play classify objects by color, shape, or size. The informality of the experience allows them to show what they know and allows the teacher to make note of what a particular child many need to work on. “Play assessment is gaining attention as a measure of developing skills of young children.” L. Kelly, B. Ryalk London: October 2005 p. 398.

29

As the story continued the first child invited classmates one by one to be the other characters in the story and they acted out the behavior of the characters. While they were doing this the other children joined in and called out the repeat part of the story. Making this story time into a play time experience the children enjoyed the story much more than they did with me just reading. The children were eager to participate and looked forward to story time. From center to center with each story that is read different children take turns being characters. When they had free play, there are times when they act out the stories among themselves. It appears that they are not only retaining the information, but some of them are able to recall the information in the order that it is happening in the story. This is right on target for the age group which is 3.5 to 4 years-ofage.Play is defined by noted psychologist Bruno Bettelheim as “any activity characterized by freedom from all but personally imposed rules (which changes at will), freewheeling fantasy involvement and by the absence of any goals outside of the activity itself.

In the Dramatic Play center, there is one child who appears to be the one setting the stage for the activity. She is telling the other children what characters they will be and who she is. She decides what

props they play with and who gets what. When another child attempts to make a decision, she talks him out of his choice and convinces him that what she wants to do is best for everyone. The other listens.

The way a child plays changes as they grow. These changes are defined in stages. As a child develops the way they play changes. There is a child in the class room; she has just been transferred to this class from a younger class. She is sitting at a table in the manipulative activities center. She has a wooden puzzle and she is taking the pieces apart and replacing them. She appears to be happy and content. There are other children in this center; nevertheless, she is playing by herself. This is the first stage of play it is “solitary play” or independent play. This is a self-centered time, according to Stages of play, by Viola Ramserver. In the art center, there are four children ranging in age 3 to 4 years old. They are all using various art supplies from crayons to paint to oil pastels and clay. They sit at the table with their smocks on and are fully engaged in their individual activities. This is the second stage of play called” Parallel Play” This kind of play involves two or more children in the same room they play with similar toys, but not together this is called “associative play” This type of play happens at age three and four where children play together.”

Children become leaders or organizers in this sage of play. As a child matures, cooperative play occurs. Between four and five, children exchange ideas about games or toys. Communication is critical in cooperative play. This stage of development is the most interesting to me. The child personality shows so much more than before. The leaders show themselves. The social development of a child becomes more vivid, when children are at play it is easier to see who they are and sometimes who their parents are and what the social structure is at home.Play is also the way a child learns about the world. In her book, Children at play, Heidi Britz-Crecelius describes how, through play, children learn about all aspects of the world, and finally themselves.

DEARLISA J

@DearLisaJ

Dear Lisa J Im going to keep it simple. Is it okay for exes to be friends? My ex-boyfriend and I broke up last year and didnʼt speak for a long time. He recently reached out to me on social media. I donʼt mind being his friend because he is a cool dude he is just a horrible boyfriend. Now I have a boyfriend and we have been together for a few months and I havenʼt told him that I have been communicating with my ex-boyfriend lately. Does not telling my boyfriend about my ex make it wrong? ###CaliChick ###CaliChick, Check this out, how would you feel if you found out that your man was friends with his ex-girlfriend and didnʼt tell you. I understand if he is a “cool” dude and all, but there is a reason why you didnʼt say anything to your current boyfriend about your communication with your ex-boyfriend. What do you have to hide? Not to mention, you and your ex just broke up a year are there is feelings there? Look, I would let my boyfriend know if I was in contact in anyway with any of my exes to avoid unnecessary problems. But if you are the kind of girl that likes drama continue your journey down lovers lane. "
