BIG STARS On The Small Screen By: Charlie O.
! Remember the days when the appearance of a movie star on a weekly television show was used for ratings. It was a treat to see someone you usually saw on the widescreen on television. As far back as when Van Johnson danced with Lucille Ball on “I Love Lucy”, major stars graced the television with their presence to help shows with ratings. However, in the past few years there has been a flood of movie stars to the small screen with their own shows. ! The rise in price of movie tickets, is one reason why some of us are not going to the movies. Not to mention the concession stand. There has to be a real wide screen must to the movies, think about it. There are some movies that must be experienced in the movie theater. Planet of the Apes, all of them. Star Wars, all of them. Fast and Furious, all of them. Gravity. See what Iʼm getting at. This is a small list of examples of those films whoʼs cinematography would be lost on the small screen. Not to mention sound, music camera movement and so on. You know what Iʼm talking about, when we see the trailer we say to ourselves of out loud, depending on where we are. Yeah! I have to see that or I can wait on that to come to Direct TV or On Demand. ! Nonetheless, there is a movement of big stars, that we love to see on the wide screen making there way to some of our favorite weekly television shows. We all love Kerry Washington, in Scandal. Ms. Viola Davis in, How to get away with Murder. i must say I have been a fan and admirer for years seeing her in various roles on television. i knew she was gonna be something big. Anyway, I digress. Mr. Terrance Howard is doing his thing along with Taraji P. Henson
on Empire. Watch out Power, Iʼm just saying. Kevin Bacon, in “The Following” is one of the best action dramas I have seen in a long time, well written, great story. Keanu Reeves and Jennifer Lopez are both scheduled to be in different shows coming to television. ! It is so much easier to just turn on the television and see a good drama or a really funny show. I think most of us are tired of some of the reality shows that have taken over. We long for a good story with good actors that does not insult our intelligence. For the stars coming to television, it is a good way I would imagine to stay working to keep their craft on point and to stay relevant. ! Whatever the reason I am glad itʼs happening. There are food shows back on television and we the viewers are the winners, as the cable channels and premium channels battle it out for the best and most watched shows on television. Thank you all.

$$$$$$$$$$$$ By: Charlie O.
! When was the last time you overheard teenagers having a conversation on the train or bus, or just hanging out anywhere in the city? The next time you ate on the train, listen in. Do not be obvious! But listen in. The reason I ask is because the last time I overhead young people converse I could not understand a word they were talking about. The words they use, the grammar was hard on the ears. I wonder to myself what was the last book any of them read? It seems to me, there is an encouragement to be ignorant. That is where bliss is found. Are our young people afraid to come across intelligent or are they really that dumb? ! Working with preschoolers, I have seen first hand the effort made to prepare children for the years ahead. The emphasis placed on math and literacy is paramount. In a good daycare center or preschool program literacy begins quite early. Children are exposed to verbal and written communication early in the program. Almost everything in the classroom is labeled so not only does the child learn what an object is but how it is spelled and how to recognize it. Stories are red and reread. Children are encouraged to retell stories. They are taught about the storybook and itʼs parts. What is an author, who is the characters, what happens first what do they think, will happen next? Beginning reading, starts and children are exposed to family words and so on. So what happens, what goes wrong, why do children loose interest in reading? ! The other day I heard on the local news that 80% of New York City school graduates are unable to read. Why did they graduate? I personally, by observation of some of the children I have seen grownup; schools are teaching how to take test and not much of anything else. Where did we lose Johnny, where has that want to learn gone. 80% of high school graduates cannot read? Two million New Yorkers can be described as functionally illiterate. Which is 25% of the population. I have heard teenagers talk about teachers saying, “Iʼm gonna get paid if you learn or not.” Why? Iʼll tell you why, we have to stop putting all the blame teachers, and they are carrying all the responsibility. What about the parents. Parents have to take responsibility for some of this. So many parents are not talking to their children, finding out whatʼs going on. What the children did in school. They have left their children on the doorsteps of the schools and forfeited their responsibility. They are not their childrenʼs advocates. Iʼll tell you whom, Johnny need to care. ! Literacy plays an essential role in the development of teenagers. With that said, if our teenagers re literate, is it then safe to say they are underdeveloped? Could that be the reason for the amount of fights and brawls being posted on social media? Are we unleashing a bunch of underdeveloped, illiterate hooligans upon society, thereby contributing to the destruction of society? Socializing has become the end all and be all in the life of a teenager. Facebook how many non-friend friends do they have. Instagram, how many people like their pictures? Who like them whoʼs texting them. To the point where laws have to be made to stop texting and driving. Now we need sidewalks for texters and non-texters. This has led to the break down of the written word, so I can see why Johnny cannot read actual words. ! Illiteracy is the steppingstone to poverty. The highest level of poverty is in the Bronx at 35% and the highest percentage of non-grads. Staten Island has the lowest percentage of 30%. Living in poverty and the lowest percentage of non-graduates, 12% of non-grads. Brooklyn is somewhere in the middle, Queens is close behind (www.literacypartners.org) ! Let us not give up on our children, build schools so that classrooms are not so full. Try to make learning fun and interesting. Allow our children to read what the enjoy reading. Start teaching again. Maybe we need to make parental participation mandatory up to the twelfth grade. The reality is if Johnnyʼs parents cannot read what are the chances they would be caring enough if she could not read. If Johnny has to bring money home because her parents cannot afford to simply live. Reading I the last thing on her mind. Money and survival is all thats on her mind. The psychological make up of a generation is not going to change. The work has to begin with the younger children the preschoolers and the kindergardeners.
DATING LISA J @DearLisaJ
Lisa J Dictionary Friendship: You do not have to see this person everyday, or even every year, but when you guys get together itʼs like you never missed a beat. You can tell each other when the other is wrong and itʼs okay. No matter what you do, how different you are or any mistakes you make, friends will never judge you or throw it in your face later. When you are having a baby or getting married, you make sure to reach out to them because itʼs important that they know and share that moment with you. When you need someone to talk to they make the time to be there for you whether by phone or face to face, thatʼs a true friend.
FRIENDS Nadia this the reserved (late bloomer) friend. Well dressed, intelligent, witty and straight forward. That friend that makes you want to put your best foot forward because you know she will. That friend you can talk to about anything, but be prepared to hear the truth about how she feels towards the matter at hand. She doesnʼt move how I move but she doesnʼt judge me either.
Andrea is the turn up friend. Funny, smart, carefree, and slightly immature because she acts first and thinks later, but slowly coming into her womanhood. That friend that you can hangout with because she is down for whatever. The friend that you can talk to about the stupid things you did and she will not judge you because she was there with you doing the same thing. She moves how I move and then we laugh about it later.
Jessica is the loud friend. Hard w o r k i n g , g o g e t t e r, l o y a l a n d aggressive. That friend that is always the loud one. The friend that is gonna tell you what she really feels and doesn't pay mind to her the delivery. That friend that you may not be able to have around everyone, because you donʼt know how others may take to them. That friend, that is there when you need the real with no chaser.
As you get older you start to realize different things, like who your real friends are. Think about it when you are young, you have so many friends. You have the friends you grew up with, they live in your neighborhood. Your school friends, you are most likely in the same grade and class and if you are in any activities outside of school then you have those friends as well. Besides all of that, it was so easy to make friends as a child. What happens between childhood and adulthood that makes it so hard to make friends and even keep those friends?
