Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is nearly ready to roll out the orange and black carpet for thousands of guests who will be attending Harley-Davidson’s anniversary festivities to celebrate 115 years of the open road. And while the legendary motorcycle company has become known for its bigtime parties since the 85th anniversary — and each celebration has been special in its own way — this major event is the first of its kind, with H-D returning to its roots with a focus on what has made the brand so iconic: the motorcycle. “We have heard from many of our customers who visited Milwaukee for previous anniversaries, and nearly everyone told us that they wanted to get out, ride and explore more of what Wisconsin has to offer. That’s why you’ll see a variety of venues hosting tons of events and parties,” said Chris Urban, marketing manager for Harley-Davidson Motor Company. “Throughout our 115-year history, HarleyDavidson has always put the customer at the forefront of every decision we make. And while tastes and fashions have come and gone — and come again — the foundation of the Motor Company has always been our customers. Our founders stood on Juneau Avenue 115 years ago putting an engine in a frame, not just to build a motorcycle, but to find freedom. And freedom is the same reason people continue to jump in the saddle of a Harley-Davidson motorcycle 115 years later.” No matter how long you’ve been riding (if at all), there’s a bike-themed event for you at the 115th anniversary weekend. If you’re hoping to show off your machine and your quick reflexes, you can join the “Run What You Brung” races at the Great Lakes Dragaway to watch, or participate in, some drag racing competitions against your buddies on the “biggest little track in the world.” Instructions and pro tips will be provided to participants of all experience levels who want to go fast in a controlled environment. For the first time in more than 100 years, you can also watch bikes kick up sand at the Bradford Beach Brawl on the shores of Lake Michigan. Vintage and new bikes will meet up and battle it out, paying tribute to the early days of racing continued on PG. 07

Indian Motorcycle, America’s first motorcycle company founded in 1901, today announced its 2019 Scout lineup with new paint options on Scout Sixty, Scout and Scout Bobber. Key feature upgrades for 2019 include an expanded ABS offering and a new USB charging port on Scout and Scout Bobber models. New for 2019, an ABS (anti-lock braking system) is now standard on every non-black Scout Sixty, Scout and Scout Bobber model. For the Thunder Black color option, riders can choose between a model that’s equipped or unequipped with ABS. The Scout and Scout Bobber will also receive a USB charging port in 2019, a convenient feature that allows

riders to charge a personal device while riding. The charging port is located near the speedometer for easy access. “The iconic Indian Scout family is a favorite amongst riders across the globe,” said Reid Wilson, Senior Director for Indian Motorcycle. “Since the addition of the Scout Bobber in July 2017, we’ve continued to evolve our Scout offering to meet the tastes of various riders, whether they prefer the classic, heritageinspired look of Scout Sixty and Scout or the stripped-down, blacked-out attitude of Scout Bobber. The refinements we’ve made for 2019 and the new paint options accentuate the wide appeal of the Scout line.”

Color options for the Scout Sixty, which packs a 60-cubic-inch, liquid-cooled and blacked-out engine, include Thunder Black, White Smoke, Ruby Metallic and Star Silver over Thunder Black. The longer I ride the more I find myself wondering what it is that has driven others to take to two wheels. Fortunately, I do ride and when I stop for a refreshment, there seems to be an abundance of people who like to chat about motorcycles. I find that the people most forthcoming, at least to me, are people in my relative age bracket. There seems to be a mix of those who used to ride and those who have dreamed of riding but they all seem to a have the same quality; enthusiasm is in their eyes even before they start talking about motorcycles. One of the fellows who has stood out in my mind was an older gent, easily in his mid to late 70’s who happened to see my bike parked while I was enjoying a much anticipated coffee. He walked around my bike which at the time was basically stock and I could see the wheels turning in his head, after about his third time circling the bike he stopped and commented how beautiful he thought the bike was. He then proceeded to tell me about his long love affair with motorcycles. As a boy, he would get excited to occasionally see one of these 2-wheeled machines roaring past him along the gravel side roads where he lived, the riders scarves waving like banners in the wind and hearing the putt putt putt of its motor. What he would have given to have one, but in his words, he

was just a lad, too young for such machinery. As he got older, he met his future wife and had a family. Again he recollected about all the beautiful machines he would see from time to time and how he wished he would someday have one of his own but at the time, his children were young and his wife would never have approved. We continued chatting for some time about todays motorcycles and his questions to me were endless. I quickly realized that his questions were not so much about the bike, his interest was how it made me feel? What I had experienced, what I had seen and where I had travelled. I told him that growing up, cars were the fascination for me, but somewhere along the way the motorcycling bug finally caught up to me and hard. I went on to explain that I started late in life getting my motorcycle license and buying a bike to fullfill my dream. It was clear that he too had been bitten and I assumed that he finally did get his ride, but it was a dream he was never able to achieve. By now, my coffee was finished and our conversation was came to an end. I put on my helmet, shook his hand and wished him well. As I rode away I caught a glimpse of him in my mirror standing where we talked watching me ride away. It’s interesting to know what the catalyst

was for each fellow rider I meet while riding. Some time ago, while working for another motorcycle publication, I met a woman who was at the time very new to riding. She was not only an inspiration to me but also to most of the people she met while riding. At the time, married with two grown children, she found herself with time on her hands and not knowing what to do with it. Aside from those chores we all seem to be chained to, her free time became unsatisfying. Inspired by other females she saw riding, she decided to give it a go. She ended up getting her license, passing the safety course, then packed her bags, threw her leg over her new ride and with little to no plans she headed west on what would become an adventure of a lifetime, all by herself. Crossing the Rockies and ending up in Vancouver. She had fulfilled a dream she never thought was even possible for her. I think of them often when I ride, especially when I ride alone and all I hear is the putt putt putt of my engine and the wind whistling past my ears. The time spent chatting to people I have met while out on rides makes me realize how short life really is and just how important it is to allow ourselves to at the very least, try new experiences or things we think we have some passion for. You know the bucket list you have, pick one thing today, and JUST DO IT!

chatterbox Kawasaki Z400 Coming for 2019 Natty naked Ninja 400 makes sense, really KAWASAKI will be whipping the covers off a new naked Z400 model later this year when it unveils its 2019 model range. It’s not a huge leap of logic to see that it’s coming. Kawasaki already has a Z250 and Ninja 250, a Z650 and Ninja 650, a Z1000 and Ninja 1000 (well, that’s what the Z1000SX is called in some markets, anyway). And last autumn announced that in 2019 it would also have a Z125 and Ninja 125. When it launched the new Ninja 400 last year, Kawasaki ditched both its direct predecessor – the Ninja 300 twin – and the naked Z300 that was spun off from that bike. So where’s the Z400? The answer is “in Kawasaki’s 2019 model range.” But this is more than just specula-

tion and deduction. Kawasaki has betrayed its plans by filing new emissions documents with the California Air Resources Board (CARB) that confirm the Z400’s existence. The documents show that the firm will have two 400cc bikes sharing the same engine. One is listed as the Ninja 400, the other as the ‘ER400DK’. In Kawasaki-speak, ‘ER’ inevitably means ‘naked bike’ – the faired Ninja 400 is an ‘EX’ model – and the ‘K’ is simply a reference to 2019 model year. The last version of the Z300 to be offered in the UK was the 2016 version and its internal code was ‘ER300BG’. Spec-wise, the new Z400 will be identical to the Ninja 400 when it comes to the engine and chassis. So we can look forward to around 45hp from the 399cc twin, and a weight of about 168kg. Too early to speculate what the cost will be but should be less the the faired version.

Curtiss introduces the ‘World’s First V-8 Battery’ in new electric motorcycle

The golden age of American-made motorcycles used to be defined by large engines and loud pipes. But that is quickly changing, as major brands like Harley Davidson announce multiple new electric models. The latest classic American motorcycle brand to go electric in a big way is Curtiss Motorcycles, who has just announced their second electric motorcycle, the Hera. Back in May, Curtiss Motorcycles unveiled Zeus, their first electric motorcycle developed in a partnership with Zero Motorcycles. Now Curtiss is completing the family as it introduces their newest electric motorcycle Hera, the wife of Zeus in Greek mythology. The 2020 Hera electric motorcycle is being marketed as a new class of motorcycle, as explained by Curtiss Motorcycles CEO Matt Chambers:

“With Hera, we set out to create the world’s most luxurious motorcycle. Featuring the world’s first V8 battery architecture, an ultra-powerful, yet refined, E-Twin motor, and a 66-inch wheelbase, Hera will occupy a class all her own.” The E-Twin motor design developed by Curtiss and first seen in the Zeus electric motorcycle consists of two Zero electric motors with a single shaft. In the Hera electric motorcycle, the E-Twin motor sits under the seat and appears to use a belt drive and a low mounted coil-over shock absorber. According to Curtiss Design Director Jordan Cornille, Hera was inspired by Glenn Curtiss’ 1907 V8 motorcycle used to set the land speed record, earning Glenn Curtiss the title “Fastest Man on Earth” when he reached 136.3 mph (219.4 km/h) on January 23, 1907.

Just over a century later, the company has now reimagined that iconic 1907 Curtiss V8 in an all-electric form, creating eight “cylinders” out of high density Li-ion batteries to mimic the original motorcycle’s form. A proprietary electronics architecture completes the package. While Curtiss hasn’t released an official top speed for Hera yet, they are claiming that it should surpass that of the bike which inspired its design. “Hera promises to deliver even greater speed than its record-setting predecessor, but in a far more luxurious package. Hera’s long wheelbase and low stance give her a classic and sensual proportion, a deliberate nod to the proportion of the original golden age of American motorcycling.” Just our take: As the Hera hasn’t yet reached produc-

tion, specs are still scarce. But if it’s anything like its predecessor Zeus though, this should be a motorcycle to be reckoned with. The Zeus featured two electric motors working in tandem to generate 290 ft-lbs (393 Nm) of torque and 170 hp (127 kW) and was described by famous motorcycle enthusiast and writer Paul d’Orléans as “Probably one of the most powerful motorcycles ever built, besides a Boss Hoss.” Considering that Hera is being pitched as Curtiss’ “all-electric flagship model”, I’d expect it to have some pretty impressive specs. With Harley Davidson releasing its own line of what will likely be very expensive electric motorcycles next year, Curtiss could prove to be major competition for the barand-shield American motorcycle icon.

Seca and I had this thing we did. We were both young, in love and desperate to show the world, so every night we would cruise the circuit. You know the circuit because every village and city has one and my home town has two main streets, both one way’s. Seca and I cruised down George to the lake at the center of downtown and back up Water street, over and over. This particular day we had been out in the country side daydreaming. Her modest parallel twin had become a roaring superbike and I was a roadracing star, brushing my shoulders against hedgerows and jumping over Ballaugh Bridge risking it all, in pursuit of Joey Dunlop. From just ahead the odd bark of his Honda V4 lured us to the edge. After placing second over that famous mountain course, because one can’t be too greedy when it comes to fantasies you know, I pointed my cherry red Yamaha 400 towards town proper and a few victory laps. I was dressed to compliment Seca with a red leather jacket, white Kiwi helmet and being the early ‘80’s, the obligatory Converse high top sneakers, which would prove to be my undoing. On about our tenth go’round a light turned red and we were first in line at the crosswalk. As I demonstrated my balancing expertise for the throng of crossing pedestrians, a slight lean to the left in preparation of placing my foot down committed me and then, well then stupid came and ruined everything. Seca leaned and I took my foot off her peg. I took my foot (!) off the peg! I took my foot off… Have you ever wondered what the perspective of an ant was like? Or how about those towering humans as they inspected it with a mixture of disgust and amazement…go ahead with the magnifying glass then why don’t you, you cruel amazon freaks. Remember those righteous Converse? The left lace had come undone and wrapped around the foot peg and as Seca and I toppled in cartoon like slow motion, I understood what had happened. I felt the pedestrians stare as they stepped over and around me and with my leg trapped under a still idling bike, I was the ant. Motorcycling is unique in how the rider is on display and that is a big part of why we enjoy it but it can turn ugly, real quick. Take a control freak, add a complete showoff and perch them on the perfect vehicle that is in full on “look at me” mode. The result is a center stage melt your face off solo, even if some of us hide in ambiguity behind dark visors and suits of armour. Trust me, us behind those dark shields are total rock stars too but just in an extra cool, teasing kind of way. It’s a strange thing motorcycling, with control and abandoned

somehow made into one and a complete manifestation of our personalities. Obnoxious and dangerous(?), on a whim because it’s easy. Want quiet and unobtrusive as you putt-putt down main street(?), no problem and it gives the spectators extra time to be impressed with the show. Out of the way precision and warp speeds at the tires edge(?), if you’ve got the jam, sometimes impressing just ourselves is all the adoration we need. Balancing on two wheels out in the publics scrutiny is a tricky proposition. Hell, equilibrium in the predawn privacy of my bedroom can be dicey and I’m using two legs and an arm! Look, lean and believe may be my mantra for riding but the clickity click of my brain’s start relay stuck in an infinite loop needs its own. Coffee first and then I do the things, that works. Motorcycles are heavy and even the most svelte race bikes have enough heft that if gravity is given the chance, parts not meant to be in contact with the ground will be. If it hasn’t happened to you yet, it will. You’ll be pushing your bike around and let it lean just that little bit too far and all of a sudden a few pounds ramps into a few hundred. Maybe you are lucky and manage to dead lift your machine (and your pride) up out of the danger zone and maybe you won’t throw your back out during the save. The more likely scenario finds you sheepishly standing beside your fallen bike with arms out and palms up as you curse the infallibility of gravity and hope no damage was done. No traffic at the end of my street, so a quick stop with my feet up to look again, all clear and my right hand fed enough fuel to stay ahead of the clutch. As the RC51 started to roll again I began turning and at a walking pace, stupid showed up and ruined everything, again. Without even a hiccup the big V-twin stopped and I got caught looking far ahead when suddenly the bike began a spiralling death circle 10 feet in diameter. No power and a lean angle far into the danger zone forced desperation, so I jammed my left foot down and for a second it was ok. Then the pirouette of shame went 360 degrees of repeated leg jams until I had to let go and literally set my beauty down in the center of the intersection. But stupid wasn’t finished with me yet because standing in the road wearing what was now a one piece “look at the duffus” leather suit wasn’t enough for that cruel bastard. He had to jack up my lower back during my display, making it impossible to lift my bike. Ya, so that was right up there with the shoelace thing and to the lady who helped me get the rubber side down again, whoever you are, thank you and know that I was only gimping around for a few days.

Bonds were formed with machines, families were closer, passions were rewarded, friends were made, hearts were broken, knee’s were skinned and we enjoyed every second of it.

Disappearing Playgrounds By Jeff Cowey Some 40 plus years ago growing up in the small city of Guelph, dozens on kids rode dirt bikes. Back in that time kids were encouraged to get outside and have fun in any way and when the street lights came on it was time to go home. All around the city were pockets of kids who would gather and ride together after school or on the weekend. Being a small and growing city, we all knew each other. The kids in the North cut trails along the Speed River leading to Guelph Lake. East enders had trails in fields going from North to South just past Grange Road. Living in the South end our group developed trails along the Eramosa River that started at Gordon Street through Cooks Mill and went all the way to Arkell. The kids in the west rode the Paisley Pits. Our trail system encompassed the perimeter of the city and we would often meet up with our friends and the race was on! As kids we made the trails and worked them often taking time to do

maintenance like trimming branches or borrowing Dads shovel to build jumps. Getting to the trail was an impatient task as we would push our bikes down the side walks collecting friends along the way. Often riding side saddle in first gear until we spotted a patrol cruiser approaching, then jumping off and hitting the kill switch. The officer would cruise by giving us the smarten up waving finger. One crafty Officer stopped us, pulled out a plug wrench and took all our spark plugs. Teaching us a lesson to carry a spare plug! Eventually sub divisions appeared cutting off access from North to South, East to West. Our riding grounds were limited and friends lost touch. The biggest blow was the dog walking tree huggers turned our trails into well groomed gravel paths along the rivers. Bikes were banned, the yuppies and their mutts took over. As kids we cut those trails creating a place where we could all play and have fun together, not necessarily staying out of trouble. Getting creative on the weekend, a group of fathers would load up as many bikes and kids as possible and take us to Crown Land in Morriston. With a caravan of six vehicles and 20 kids, they would make a day of fun for us. The fa-

thers would tail gate and bbq all day as us kids would ride the network of trails our fathers cut in in their youth. This was a great time for our parents to get away from the daily grind and have some fun as well. Us kids would ride all day often returning to base camp for a burger, first aid or repairs. We would often split up into small groups and cross paths giving each other a kick in passing. At the end of the day we would all return to base camp and assemble for one final ride. This was the race along a planned route to see who would make it back first. No holds barred this was an all out battle that ended with a few bumps and brusies and whole lot of laughter and hand shakes. Eventually we all started high school and team sports took the place of dirt bikes. We were on our way to the next stage of life that sadly didn’t include our dirt bike days. Some went on to race as professionals and others started a career in sports. None the less, we all had memories of our youth as a bunch of kids and their bikes. When my daughter started riding her first trail bike at the age of nine, we would go to a friends farm and ride the many acres of grass inside the crop circle. This was easy grounds to learn on. When the

crop was taken off in the fall, the fields opened up to get some speed and develop some skills in the dirt. At the end of her first season it was time for some exposure to trail riding. The 400 acres of crown land in Morriston is a series of tough technical trails. Coming to a steep “S” shaped decent covered in loose rock she lost it and landed hard. My heart was broken as she sat beside her bike crying and stating “I don’t want to do it!” We made our way out and called it a day, however we did return. Into her 5th season of riding the trails in Morriston, she has mastered that treacherous section of trail standing on the pegs, riding the rear brake and feathering the clutch. Once at the bottom on the short straight she gracefully sits and gives the throttle a twist spitting gravel all the way to the next challenging corner! This being the last local place to ride free, we have shared many great memories and good times. It has been a learning ground for us both a generation apart. Often we will take a break and sit beside our bikes looking out over the trails and talk. Sharing this connection will last a lifetime. Sadly this section of land bordering the West side of Morriston is slated for

a new 401/Hwy 6 bypass. This much needed bypass is essential to relieve the most congested section of 2 lane hi-way in Canada. The community of Morriston has suffered dearly for years as this hub is a gateway for the South to meet the East and West. Understanding that progress and development is necessary for our ever growing world, its a shame that we have to sacrifice farm land and places that as youth we created only to feed the machine of progress. Knowing our time is limited to ride these local trails on Crown Land, we in-

tend to take full advantage and visit as often as possible. Until the day the sign goes up, we will be there grooming, trimming low hanging helmet smacking branches and digging a relief for the water to run off the massive puddle. All great thing’s come to a end…we are down but not out! There are many net works of trails throughout Ontario. The majority of which have beed sanctioned by ATV clubs and two wheeled machines are not welcome. Visiting Sauble Beach recently my Daughter and I were denied trail passes as we were on bikes. Opening up the trails to two wheelers would

easily double the memberships annual income. Their narrow minded way of thinking that dirt bikes tear up the trails is a disappointment. Bikes have one drive wheel…quads have four! Little do they know their trails are littered with quads and bikes that have no permits… post all the signs you want but get with the times and accommodate all! Being pro-active the search is on to find trails to continue riding. Many tracks around South Central Ontario offer trails. Now a minimum of a two hour drive is required to get out and have some fun. To a teenager this drive takes

all the fun out of a day of riding. Recently Durham Moto Park closed their trails to bikes and quads and converted them to mountain bike paths. Trying to capture the mountain bike market is a move to inspire new business…once again the dirt bikers loose, which in turn the children loose. The V9 Bobber is getting a sporty new variant, with the new model to debut Sept. 7-9 at Moto Guzzi‘s open house event in Mandello del Lario, Italy. Moto Guzzi has released just a single photo of the V9 Bobber Sport, but that’s enough to give us a pretty good idea what to expect. Based on the photo, we know the 2019 Moto Guzzi V9 Bobber Sport is getting twin Öhlins rear shocks. Up front, the telescopic fork looks to be unchanged except for the addition of fork gaiters. Above the single round headlight rests a small black screen which is already offered in Moto Guzzi’s accessories catalog. The fuel tank and front fender are in a reddish copper color, while the side panels with the V9 Bobber Sport logo come in the same color with a swath of

Beyond that, we expect the Sport model to similar to the regular V9 Bobber, including its 853cc 90-degree VTwin engine. Only a bit of the header pipe is visible in the supplied photo, but it wouldn’t be unexpected if the exhausts end in with upgraded silencers. We’ll have more information when the 2019 Moto Guzzi V9 Bobber Sport debuts in Mandello del Lario. What do these lyrics have in common? - I’m standin’ on a corner in Winslow, Arizona - I was only twenty-four hours from Tulsa - Travel my way, take the highway that is best.

By Nevaeh Tnes Those songs all have to do with places in the U.S.; specifically places along The Main Street of America, more commonly known as Route 66. So many people have stood on the corner of Old Highway 66 and North Kinsley Avenue (made famous by Jackson Browne and Glenn Frey) some of the bronze has been worn off the shoulders of the statue. Few have not heard Gene Pitney’s rendition of 24 Hours From Tulsa. The song Route 66 was so popular, Nat King Cole’s original was covered by Chuck Berry, The Rolling Stones, Asleep at the Wheel, Depeche Mode and John Mayer. From October 1960 to March 1964, CBS ran a television show named Route 66 starring Martin Milner, George Maharis and Glenn Corbett. When asked why he chose Route 66 as the basis for this trip, Peter Campbell of

Smiths Falls, ON gave the classic adventurer response. “Because it was there.” Campbell and several of his Raider¹ buddies (Dale Eineder from Zanesville OH; Dancin’ Dave Cwi of Indianapolis IN; Joe Trilone from High Bridge NJ; and Rob Garneau of Paducah KY) spent the second full week of June hitting some of the highlights of the iconic Will Rogers Memorial Highway. Although the original Route 66 stretched 2448 miles between Chicago and Los Angeles, the Raiders followed The Mother Road out as far as the Grand Canyon and then turned right. But along the way, they discovered some “interesting stuff”, like the octagonal library in Atlanta, IL. It was “pretty cool”, said Campbell. Unlike many communities in North America, this library was funded by public support rather than through a Carnegie Library grant³. And this eyecatching building has been in service since it opened in 1908. Still in Illinois, the Raiders came upon the historic Soulsby’s Shell Service Station in Mount Olive. Although it closed in 1993, it was the oldest usable service station in the state of Illinois. Campbell was delighted to hear that there are plans to re-open the service station as a museum. Even in its present state, Peter ranked Soulsby’s as a “very

exceptional location”. Across state lines in Missouri, sits the still operational Munger-Moss Motel. The business started out as the MungerMoss Sandwich Shop at Devil’s Elbow in 1936, but a four lane highway by-pass caused the owners to relocate to Lebanon. Still in operation, the restoration of the large neon sign was funded in part by a grant from the National Park Service. The motel still operates with 44 rooms and 16 efficiency units. When I asked about weather, Peter replied that it had been very cooperative. Their rain gear barely saw the light of day. But not everything was so agreeable. There was a road. A toll road. And there should have been a law. Because common sense is not that common and it did not prevail in this case. At the beginning of the toll road the Raiders found several options to move forward. One lane was exact change only; one lane was dedicated to transponders and the third lane had an actual person who would accept money and give change. It didn’t take the guys very long to get through that toll. Further down that road, out in the middle of nowhere, a second toll appeared. This one, however, was far less accommodating. It would only accept exact change for a piddly $1.30 toll or the state’s unique transponder. No human

being at this toll; no option for making change. And you know it’s almost impossible to dig around in your pockets for $1.30 or pass a few coins to a buddy without dropping some on the asphalt . . . and having to get off your bike . . . and take off your gloves . . . and find you’re still a nickle short. And that’s why there’s usually beer at the end of the day’s ride. Staying on Route 66 through Texas, the Raiders landed in Vega, home of the Magnolia Petroleum gas station. Although it had been closed for decades, the municipality opted to restore the building in 2004 and re-open it as a visitors’ centre using many original artifacts. When I asked which state Peter thought had the most bang for its buck, he responded, “Arizona”. Who could ride or drive through Winslow, Arizona without a quintessential photograph “standin’ on the corner”? Look closely and you will see that the statue has shouldered a lot of tourists. Being a pilot, Peter was in his element when the group reached the “Planes of Fame” Air Museum in Valle. (Its sister museum is located in Chino, California.) Wikipedia reports: The museum’s collection of Japanese aircraft is the largest of its type in the world. This collection includes the only authentic airworthy example of the Japanese Mitsubishi A6M

Zero fighter in the world with its original Sakae engine and an Aichi D3A featured in the movie Tora! Tora! Tora! Many other rare aircraft are maintained in flyable condition such as a North American P51A Mustang, the only Northrop N9MB Flying Wing, a Boeing P-26A Peashooter, a Lockheed P-38J Lightning and a Republic P-47G Thunderbolt. No matter how many times you’ve seen it, the Grand Canyon, carved out by the Colorado River, never fails to strike awe in visitors. The canyon is 277 miles long and 6093 feet deep. At its widest, the open maw is 18 miles across. Even when you know you’re moving toward it, the sight will take you by surprise. Imagine the astonishment of the Spanish in 1540. Needing to keep to a schedule, Peter and the rest of the Raiders peeled themselves away from the south rim and rode on through Utah, Colorado and Kansas. Although the group rode primarily on “modern” roads, they occasionally had an opportunity to ride the original Route 66. “What a difference,” said Campbell. “Travelling on it was very different than today on the ‘superslab’. The historic route is very narrow.” One of the final highlights of the trip for Peter was the Champ Clark Bridge that crosses the Mississippi River to connect Louisiana, Missouri with Pike County, Illinois. Opened in June 1928, this five-span truss bridge is 2,286 feet long. It is one of the lesser-known and lesserused crossings, carrying only about 5500 vehicles per day. That seems like a fair amount of traffic until you realize that the Poplar Street Bridge crossing the Mississippi in St Louis supports 100,000 vehicles per day. The Champ Clark Bridge is so narrow, many drivers report losing their side mirrors while crossing. † This was Peter’s first stab at plotting the route and leading the Raiders on an extended ride. The feedback was posi† tive, so he would do it again. He also said he enjoyed the trip and most of the long days he and his buddies put in. After all, a week is not a long time to ride from Sarnia, ON to the Grand Canyon, Arizona and back again. Unless you’re a Raider, of course. Less formally, they ride like hell to meet in one spot, ride together for a day or a week and then ride like hell to get home again. How I conquered insanity and became a better rider By John Lewis I have learned that motorcycling and insanity are a poor mix, maybe not as bad as drinking and riding, but potentially just as deadly. No, I’m not bona fide crackers. When I say insane I’m thinking more along the lines of Einstein’s oft quoted definition: “… insanity is when you continue to do the same things over and over again and expect different results.” While riding I had a close call with a car turning left in front of me, (but it could have been any of the many close calls we experience on a daily basis). What was my first reaction? Anger followed by a loudly vented “Son of a b$%¢h”, blame, and finally a recounting of the event to whoever would listen. The next day I climbed back on my bike and rode with nary a thought about what had happened the day before, that is to say, I continued to ride the same way I always did and hoped for different results. If that is the definition of insanity, call me insane. As I got more kilometres under my tires I thought I was becoming a better rider. I wasn’t. How could I have been? I didn’t give any thought to the close calls I had experienced. I didn’t think about whether I might have played a role causing them. I didn’t plan alternative riding strategies that would prevent similar incidents in the future. In fact, although I was feeling more comfortable on my bike skills-wise, I wasn’t working on any of the actual street riding strategies and thinking skills that would keep me out of harms way. And, I was oblivious to this and kept riding in ignorant bliss. Occasionally I watch motorcycle crashes posted on YouTube so I can analyze what the rider did or didn’t do and think about what I could do differently to avoid a similar crash. In one such video a motorcycle is hit by a left-turning vehicle. I read the comments and every single one of them blamed the driver and no one suggested that the rider was even partially at fault—maybe not legally, but by doing or not doing something that would have prevented the crash. I thought the crash looked preventable. This is when I realized two things. From the comments I thought it unlikely that neither the rider in the accident, nor possibly any of the commenters to boot, would learn a damn thing from this crash. The car driver, that ignorant cager, was at fault and that was that. Secondly, I realized that I was doing exactly the same thing. Although I was doing a post mortem on the video I wasn’t actually analyzing and learning from my own close calls. This is when the idea of keeping a moto-journal came to me—a place I could record close-call incidents and techniques and riding strategies I thought I needed to work on. But, before even starting such an endeavour I knew that I would have to change my mindset. If I continued to play the blame game I wasn’t going to learn anything. I had to open myself up to the idea

that I was partially responsible for the incident too. By changing my mindset I would let myself move beyond anger and blame to analysis, reflection, understanding, responsibility, and a positive change in riding behaviour. To my surprise, it worked. It helped me identify techniques and strategies I needed to apply to my riding. If the YouTube video crash was an incident that happened to me, here is a sample journal entry/incident report I might write. I wrote it in the third person to gain an objective perspective but how it’s done doesn’t matter. The key is to learn from the incident. Incident: Left-turning driver turns in front of motorcyclist causing a crash What happened? As the bike went through the intersection the car turned in front of it. The bike was not able to stop in time or take corrective action and crashed into the car. When I watched the video I was immediately alerted to the danger of the car. It was rolling slowly as if it was just about ready to make the turn. Yet, the rider proceeded without taking any action. Did he miss the signs completely? Was he distracted? Was he unaware that left-turning vehicles posed a threat? Why did the crash happen? There were two parties involved so there is what the car driver did or didn’t do and there is what the rider did or didn’t do. I decided to look at both. 1. The driver turned left in front of the oncoming biker, not giving him the right of way, and caused the crash. The driver apparently did not see the motorcycle or did not perceive its actual speed. Why? The rider was not wearing high visibility gear and got lost in the visual clutter. The rider may have been speeding. The small motorcycle profile didn’t give the driver enough information to make an accurate assessment. 2. The biker didn’t anticipate a potential crash, missed the potential hazard so did nothing to prepare for it, or saw it and misread what was happening—possibly due to lack of experience. 3. The biker wasn’t able to stop in time. Why? The rider wasn’t ready. The rider wasn’t covering his brakes. The rider was going too fast. The rider panicked. The rider didn’t have the riding skills. What I can learn from this incident? 1. The rider could have been more alert to the danger. Upon seeing the hazard, he could have reduced his speed to be able to stop in a shorter distance or take evasive action. If the rider was aware that left-turning vehicles are a hazard but just missed it he may have been riding with his mind elsewhere. 2. The rider needs to commit to himself to keep his head in the game and be present whenever he is riding. 3. The rider should cover his controls to reduce reaction time and stop quicker. Once the driver turned and noticed the bike he stopped in the middle of the intersection leaving ample room for the bike to swerve around it. Why did the bike not do this? It could be that the biker didn’t have the skills to do so. Or, it could be that the biker was taken by surprise and panicked.

The fact that the biker deployed his ABS while panic braking is a clue. 4. The rider could practice identifying potential hazards while riding. 5. The rider could practice emergency braking and brake and evade exercises to better be able to avoid a panicking. Another way to look at the crash is to look at it from the eyes of the driver. Drivers don’t go out to crash into motorcyclists. So, why did the driver turn? I can think of only two reasons: the driver didn’t see the motorcycle (it was blocked by another ve-

hicle or it was lost in the visual clutter), or they saw it but thought they had enough time to turn. 5. The rider could have worn high visibility clothing to give the driver a better chance to see him. 6. The rider could have swerved the bike back and forth before the intersection to create a visual cue for the car driver that he was there and set himself apart from the visual clutter. 7. The rider could have moved further away from the left-turning driver

Sunday! Sunday! Sunday! By Dawn Edmonds That phrase used to be part of the “Mega Monster Truck Rally” TV commercial. I don’t know if it is still being aired, but I thought about it last weekend while I was attending Grand Bend Motorplex’s “MOPAR Canadian National Superbike Series”. It was, after all, Sunday and I was at a rally. My first ‘live’ bike racing event was different than I had imagined. For one thing, the first vehicle that caught my eye was a quietly stunning blue and white Cobra. Yes – there were some magnificent bikes to be seen but you could almost hear them snorting while being groomed for their races. The Cobra, on the other hand was just sitting there; minding its own business; secure in its (replicated) sublimity.

As I wandered through the vendor area, I found it surprisingly quiet. I took hearing protection with me, but was shocked at the low level of noise even after the races began. The larger bikes, mostly 4-cylinders, were quieter than the smaller bikes; but even the noise from those was not deafening. The one easily identifiable outlier was a Ducati with a bark that popped out amid a group of mostly BMWs. The weather was agreeable. The sun flirted with us most of the afternoon making the ambient temperature warm but not unbearable. Everyone appreciated that as fairgrounds, racetracks and grandstands are not known for their shade. While I was impressed at the number of parents that provided hearing protection for their young children, I wondered why the dog owners did not afford their pets the same protection. A website called, Puppy Playground, maintains that “by the time their sense of hearing has developed, they (dogs)

can already hear 4 times the distance a human with normal hearing. Dogs can hear higher pitched sounds and can detect a frequency range of 67 – 45,000 Hz compared to a human range of 64 – 23,000 Hz.” No less intriguing was the peoplewatching. Of particular note were two very attractive, young blonde women decked out in black, body-hugging riding gear. I chuckled to myself as I watched the heads of the seven men sitting in front of me on the bleachers turn in unison and watch those two women strut by. And I laughed out loud as those same two women wrapped their arms around each others’ waists and the heads and shoulders of those seven men slumped in disappointment. I ran into the two women later that afternoon and relayed to them what I had seen. They howled with laughter. “Silly boys.” And cameras. Big, big cameras with big, big lenses and tripods. These guys weren’t fooling around. In fact, this set

of races can be viewed on TSN in the next couple of weeks. Although my next observation may sound like a down ‘n’ out criticism of the announcer, it is not. As much as I like to talk, I imagine it is challenging to maintain a patter in between races – particularly when last minute snafus occur and the MC must fill time. But he said something I found shocking. “We’d like to thank one of our sponsors, the makers of the Dodge Ram pick-up; the best selling truck in North America.” Nonsense, I thought! The best-selling pick-up truck in the world has always been the Ford F-series. So outrageous was his statement I had to pull out my cell phone and Google the stats. Phew! The numbers from the Global Auto Database (GAD) showed that the Ford F-series is the best selling pick-up in the U.S., in North America, and in the world. As the bikes were being rolled out onto the track, I was intrigued by the amount of equipment and support

staff that accompanied the racers out to the field. “Umbrella Girls”, strategists, and two-wheeled carts with compressors and the ubiquitous tire warmers. Even 20-lap races do not last long, so everything about the bikes and riders has to be hot right off the mark. And they were hot. The MC announced that, while screaming down the back straightaway, riders approach 260 km/hr. With the warm-up lap under their belts, it was surprising at how quickly the pack spread out. And not unlike most life events, there was a small group at the very front competing for every possible opening; a space followed by ‘most’ of the riders; a larger empty slot and a few riders battling it out for last place. I was sitting where I could focus on three, closely-spaced curves and that vantage point provided an amazing opportunity to catch riders shifting themselves and their bikes from straight up to deep leans into the track curves. It was intriguing to watch the different styles of shifting. Some riders went from sitting square on the bike to almost lifting themselves off the saddle before sitting back down in a leaning position. Those riders appeared to experience a slight wobble in their bikes as they re-settled onto their saddles. Other riders made a smoother transition from the middle of their bike seats to leaning deep into the curves – without the transitory wobble. Initially, I assumed the smoother the transition, the closer to the front of the pack the rider would find himself, but that was not the case. The wobbly and smooth transitioners were evenly distributed throughout the pack. Almost heart-stopping was the power demonstrated by the racers as they came out of the last of the three curves near the ‘front’ of the track and blasted down the short straightaway. The lift of each bike as it accelerated was so palpable, it was not difficult to imagine the bikes actually taking flight. There were a couple of crashes. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured and the bikes survived well enough to be rolled off the grass although some of the paint was seriously damaged. My only constructive feedback is about the venue rather than the event. The back straightaway is long and gives racers a chance to overtake riders ahead of them. It is also behind a berm and cannot be seen by the spectators. If I owned the Motorplex, I might consider removing the hill or installing flat screens to make that action visually accessible. Other than that, my first ‘live’ race was a great experience. I wouldn’t hesitate to go back. In fact, I was so excited about the idea of racing, I picked up a brochure outlining the opportunities to race bikes at Grand Bend. “Thursday Bike Nights”, here I come! Breaking Down ~ A lesson In Life By Jeff Cowey When your machine lets you down on a ride it’s no fun at all. Emotions escalate, and a certain determination to discover why is the first thing on mind. At the best of times a roadside repair can be made and you are on your way with a sense of relief. The time when total defeat is evident, a sinking feeling sets in. A helmet placed on the ground behind the bike will indicate you need assistance. Having broke down many times in my life, the first was the most memorable. In my late teens on a Friday of a long weekend and heading up to the beach to meet up with friend’s, the nut on the drive sprocket backed off on my H2. On a deserted back road coasting as far as possible seemed like a good idea at the time. Searching the shoulder of the road and walking endlessly to find the nut, all hope was lost. Having a couple tools the chain was removed and the push began to find a place to leave my bike and hitch hike home. Finally a farm in sight and a tractor in the field bailing hay, there was hope. Approaching the entrance to the field, suddenly the tractor and bailer pulled out in front and stopped. A tall and daunting Man in his mid sixty’s jumped from the tractor effortlessly and approached. With an outstretched hand he introduced himself as Eric. Grasping his huge hand and looking directly into his green eyes and introducing myself, a feeling of comfort came over me. “How long you been pushing that bike Son?” “Lost the drive nut just before the last concession.” “Good mile and a half, tie this rope to it and we will get you up to the shed.” Being towed behind a hay bailer was sketchy but better than pushing. Going up the lane Eric never took his eyes off me. How he navigated the tractor

up the lane looking backwards the whole time baffled me. Once in the yard and un-hooked Eric stated that dinner would be ready soon and spending the night would be a good idea. “Yes Sir…Thank you Sir.” Standing opposite Eric at the dinner table with chairs pushed in while his wife Geraldine placed dinner down and seated herself, Eric gave me a nod an we seated together. During dinner Eric had my whole life story out in the open as he asked the questions and they were politely answered. After dinner we went out to the barn doing chores and tending to the live stock until what seemed like midnight. Eric told me how they were not able to have children and having to rely on hired help his whole life to keep the family farm running that was passed down to him from his father. Telling my story of how my Mother would drop me off at the CO-OP Farm Labour Board the day after school was out since the age of 11 to spend the summer working as a labourer for farmers in need of help. Returning home a week before school started with 200$ pay for the season, the money went towards buying new clothes and shoes for the next school year. A little money was saved for bicycle parts. Eric woke me the next morning at the crack of dawn. “Come along Son I have an idea.” Armed with a thermos of black coffee we got on the tractor with bailer in tow and headed down the side of the road. Passing the cup of coffee back and forth, Eric told me stories of his time served in the Navy when he was a young man much like myself. Abruptly the tractor stopped! “Is that what you are looking for a stones throw ahead?” Not seeing anything I jumped off the tractor with less grace than Eric and began walking ahead. Finally a tiny shadow appeared on the very edge of the gravel and grass 50’ ahead. There was the nut for my sprocket almost the exact same place my bike came to a stop. Picking up the nut and holding it high, Eric’s green eyes lit up and a smile came across

his weathered face. Once back on the tractor Eric asked “Guess you will be on your way to meet up with your friends now?” “No Sir…I can see there is a lot of hay that needs to come in.” “We better get at it Son, breakfast is in 3 hours.” After spending the remainder of the weekend bringing in hay until the fields were empty and the mow was stacked, Eric helped me repair my bike. Sitting on my bike and strapping up my helmet Eric put his hand on my shoulder and said “You are a good kid Son…but you need a haircut.” “Yes Sir, thank you Sir… for everything.” Riding down the lane and stopping at the entrance to the field where I first met Eric, the view of the empty field brought back visions of pushing my bike along it’s length. Revelation suddenly struck me that Eric spotted me and stopped everything that was important to him to help out. Unhitching the hay wagon and with perfect timing pulling out of the field just ahead was his plan. A selfless act coming to the aid of a stranger in a time of need. Looking over my shoulder back at the house Eric was still standing tall in the yard watching, and once he caught my eye gave a Navy Salute. Out of respect I dismounted, stood tall and straight returning the gesture. Once back in town the first thing in order was a Navy Crew hair cut. While my shoulder length locks were hitting the floor and reflecting on what a great weekend it was my thoughts were filled with how Eric was so generous, caring, compassionate and unconditional toward a total stranger. A man to look up too! Recently while watering the garden a bike pulled up front and sat idling. Thinking it was a friend stopping by for a visit, I dropped the watering can and ventured out front. A elderly gentleman was there with one hand on the throttle and the other on the choke trying to keep his aging Ultra Classic running. “Sounds like its only running on one cylinder.” “Yes its been acting up for some time, now it’s really not good.” “ I’m 45 minutes

from home and going to have tea with a lady friend.” Opening the gate I waved him in to the garage. ‘Lets have a quick look.” Handing him a phone the let his Lady Friend know he would be a little late, I quickly went to work. Introducing himself as Walter as I was pealing the seat off in a flurry and starting on the fuel tank,Walter asked “Don’t you have better things to do Son?” “No Sir I was just watering the garden.” A coil wire trapped between the tank and frame had rubbed to the core causing a short. With spare coil wires in a parts box we tie wrapped them out of harms way. Quickly removing the plugs to glass bead the carbon foul off and getting things back in place, we pulled the dipstick out to reveal fuel loaded oil from the lame cylinder. Dropping the oil and luckily a full 4 ltr jug was on hand to fill it back up. In a half hour Walter fired up his bike and with both cylinders firing, I opened the gate for him. The bike went silent. “What do I owe you Son?” “Nothing…I have been paid already by someone much like yourself. Guess you will be on your way to meet your Lady Friend Sir?” “No I told her something came up and we will have to make it another time, but I can see your garden still needs to be watered.” Walter told me stories of all the bikes he has owned over the last 60 years while making trips to and from the rain barrels. We sat on the porch and I told my story of Eric explaining how I have spent my life trying to repay that debt. Walter noted “It’s not a debt to be re-paid Son, it’s a lesson. And judging how you went out of your way today you learned well. Never stop!” “Thank you Sir” As Walter rode away my thoughts went back to Eric. In one weekend, that tall majestic man with the emerald green eyes impacted my life in a way that shaped my soul for a lifetime. That… I’m thankful for. Ever since that fateful day, I see a breakdown as a change of plans, a opportunity for adventure and a chance to make a new friend growing from the experience.
