Ducati Unveils New Motorcycles For 2019 Ducati has presented its 2019 range in Milan, including three new models, new versions and a first time ever enduro e-mtb. The three all-new motorcycles unveiled by Ducati are the new Ducati Panigale V4 R, Ducati Diavel 1260 and the Ducati Hypermotard 950. “Ducati has achieved a striking degree of maturity”, said Claudio Domenicali, while opening the Ducati World Premiere 2019. “It is a global flag bearer of some of the best aspects of Made in Italy excellence. Based on core values of Style, Sophistication and Performance, our company now offers a range as broad as it is state-of-the-art. This year sees the first major overhaul of the entire Scrambler range since its inception, plus a complete renewal of the Diavel and Hypermotard, two bikes that are firm favourites with Ducatisti. Today, safety and rider-friendliness have hit new heights, yet the brand’s sporting soul is as evident as it has ever been. The Panigale V4 R, in fact, is the most powerful factory motorcycle ever built by Ducati. We’re also delighted with our on-line presence, an area that has enjoyed excellent growth, thus confirming the extraordinary appeal of the entire Ducati product range.” The new Ducati Scrambler range was unveiled at the premiere, spanning the Icon to the Café Racer, Full Throttle and Desert Sled, as well as the new Multistrada 1260 Enduro. The new Ducati electric mountain bike, MIG-RR, will also be displayed at the EICMA show. Ducati presented the new Multistrada 950 S, an updated version of the Multistrada 950, which now gets electronic Ducati Skyhook Suspension, Ducati Quick Shift up and down, full-LED headlight, 5-inch full-colour TFT instrument console, hands-free system, cruise control and backlit switchgear controls. The Multistrada 950 also inherits the bigger side “wings”from the Multistrada 1260, and now comes with Bosch cornering ABS. Ducati also unveiled the new Hypermotard 950, which now gets a complete makeover with overhauled ergonomics, new chassis and electronics package. The new Hypermotard 950 is 4 kg lighter than the previous model and is powered by a renewed 937 cc, Testastretta 11-degree engine with 114 bhp, and a new electronics package which includes Bosch Cornering ABS, with Slide by Brake function, Ducati Traction Control EVO, Ducati Wheelie Control, and Ducati Quick Shift Up and Down EVO as standard on the Hypermotard 950 SP and available as an accessory on the base 950. Additionally, the Hypermotard 950 SP also features a flat seat, increased-travel Ohlins suspension and Marchesini forged wheels.

An Authentic Tribute Bike. Classic looks and modern performance come together with a parallel-twin to push this homegrown-looking bike, the new Kawasaki W800 Café. Unveiled at 2018 EICMA, the factory pulled out all the stops to give it a custom, homegrown appeal. The landscape is rapidly changing for motorcycle manufacturers the world over, and all the major brands are looking to rope in the next generation of riders/ revenue. It seems that this new buyer base has excellent taste in retro-style ma-

chines, so Kawi looks to take that to the bank with the all-new W800 Café. I’ve never made secret my appreciation for café racers, so it’s with great delight and anticipation that I dissect this charming mid-size ride. The year was 1966 when the W1 hit the scene to become the grand-daddy of the Ninja line, and that provides the inspiration for the design of this retro-tastic sled. It starts with the wire wheels to lend it a dated air and the blackout treatment that comes out of the gate in earnest for

a custom bent. The front end is almost uniformly achromatic except for the wire spokes and, of course, the brake disc. Darkened fork sliders and tubes run with black bellow gaiters and a similarly dark, M-shape handlebar. The bar’s shape strikes a historical chord because back in the day, homebuilt café racers frequently had factory bars that were mounted upside-down and backwards. That’s where the peculiar dents in the front of the fuel tank came from, since in that configuration... continued on PG. 03

they were free to make contact with the tank before the tripletree found the steering stops. Amid all this darkness is a silver bullet fairing in the café style, and that contrast lends the W800 quite a bit of additional homegrown appeal. Go ahead and pencil me in as a fan even if it does look a bit mismatched; kinda’ like corduroy patches on a plaid jacket. A flange-type, teardrop fuel tank fits the bill perfectly with rubber kneepads that cushion and grip when you tuck in. The saddle rocks a two-tone look with a brown pilot area and black pillion, and while the p-pad is generously proportioned, it creates a faux tail-fairing look reinforced by the color change so you can get that solo-saddle look without precluding a passenger. Plus, there’s a pair of J.C. handles that double as an-

chors for a bungee net to give you a little cargo capacity. A slightly bobbed rear fender mounts the rearward lights and a tagholder to do away with the mudguard, and one can’t

as well as others from history. At the end of the day, it’s just another standard UJM with a bullet fairing and stylized tail section, but so were many of the original café racers, which makes this a rather authen-

help but see a similarity between this rear end and those favored by British giant Triumph on some of its current models

tic tribute piece that genuinely pays homage to the W1. Even though café racers aren’t pow-

erful ‘circuit-type’ bikes, they are street racers and are expected to deliver decent cornering performance in an urban environment. It’s safe to say that double-downtube/ double-cradle frames generally look more or less the same, but Kawasaki designed the structure from the ground up for this all-new bike. The factory used advanced dynamic analysis software to determine the stress on each individual frame member, and that allowed it to vary the insidediameter of each piece according to the strain it’ll have to support. A 50 mm square cross-section backbone acts as the main structural member and imparts its great strength to the assembly. It’s important to remember that even though café racers aren’t powerful “circuit-type” bikes, they are street racers and are expected to deliver decent cornering performance in an urban environment. That’s OK, because while straight-line performance is good for fast bikes, cornering performance is good for fast riders, and guess which one requires more skill. Past, Present and Future Traditions: Customs or beliefs that are passed on from generation to generation. As a child, everyone I knew celebrated Christmas the same way. It was almost a laundry list of things we all had and or did leading up to the big day. It started with the first week of December, that was when our tree when up, not November 30th – December, because November is way too early. Then the outside decorations were hung. Same multi-coloured string year after year, always with a few bulbs broken or blownout from the previous year. We had that string for so long, most of the colour coating had flaked off the bulbs and any colour that still remained on the surviving bulbs was only enough to be able to tell what colour it used to be so dad knew what they once were when he got around to changing them. So, the string, once hung and lit really was a series of yellowish-white bulbs highlighted with 8 or 10 new colour saturated glass bulbs, that was our display. For the next few weeks leading up to the big day, we’d visit the malls, shop and enjoy all the great window displays decorated for the holidays. My family would always reserve one Saturday before Christmas to go downtown Toronto for the day. We’d take the subway down to the Eaton’s Centre area and as we exited the station, I remember a sound that surrounded me, cars honking in the distance, bells jingling from Santa standing on the corner and the sounds of the people chatting as they rushed by, each of them carrying at least one of those large department store bags that were for sale at their entrances. If, I was lucky, it would be snowing that day adding to the excitement. Simpsons Department Store was on the corner of Yonge Street and Dundas, it was huge,

large windows decorated with Christmas magic all along Dundas Street. Right next to Simpsons was The Hudson’s Bay Department Store and of course there was Eaton’s Department store to the north. All were multi-stories high and each floor was dedicated to a specific department. Always located on one of the top floors was the toy department. As you rode the up escalator a sound began to get louder and louder, whistles, bells, songs and drums – the toy department, with all it’s glitz would be revealed as you crested that 7th floor escalator, it was glorious! The ‘Toy Department’, the ultimate destination for any kid. Toys as far as you could see in every direction, shelves stacked with fun and at the centre of this wonderful universe, the big department stores would unwrap and setup elaborate displays to showcase the latest and greatest. That was it for me, it didn’t get any better than that, how on earth could you top that? The day would always wind down with a trip to a favourite restaurant and the ride back to Islington station via the subway and home once again – what a special day. The years have peeled away and with each new layer, it seemed like more and more of my childhood experiences were disappearing, every Christmas, less and less effort seemed to be put into the customer experience. And then it happened, no more Toy Department or those wonderful eye popping displays. As I grew older, I tried to keep some of those traditions alive for my family, trips to the big city, visiting the big department stores, until they all closed their doors and disappeared. The anchor – Eaton’s Centre until about a decade ago was the last remaining survivor of my childhood, my connection to Christmas Past and now it’s gone

too. I carried those traditions and my passion of motorcycles on to my son and he is now doing the same for his daughter. I am now a grandfather to a beautiful, smart and funnny (rather talented) little girl, she knows nothing of the experiences I or her father had as a child. She will never experience the sheer joy and excitement of walking into the department store and seeing that mountain of toys. A entire room dedicated just to her imagination, creativity and the wonder of all that was Christmas. I guess with time new traditions are replaced, not by choice but by the ever changing landscape of society. We now have new traditions she will grow up with and remember and hold close to her heart. Those traditions are not just limited to the season we know as Christmas, our new traditions carry over into all aspects of her life like the passion for motorcycles we all have. From early on she has been fascinated with them, and with those who ride. She has become an honorary member of a South Carolina HOG chapter on a recent trip south and every chance she gets with her dad, she can’t wait to throw a leg over the seat of his motorcycle and go around the block. I think her future looks good from where I sit. The future of motorcycling is up to all of us who ride. Teach, share and spread the joy not just of the season but of your passion for riding and hopefully someday she or he will ask you to go for a ride with them. On behalf of the staff here at The Motorcycle Times, we wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year. See you in February.

chatterbox Ural shows off slick electric motorcycle Yamaha Leaning Multiwith sidecar using Zero’s powertrain Wheel Technology the

2019 NIKEN GT

Electric motorcycles are really coming into their own. This year’s EICMA 2018, the world’s premier motorcycle show, was bursting with new and exciting models. But one thing that we didn’t see there were electric motorcycles with sidecars. ReVolt has been promising an electric sidecar motorcycle but has yet to deliver. Now Ural has stepped in to fill the gap with their own electric motorcycle and sidecar. The Russian motorcycle company Ural has a storied history producing sidecar motorcycles. However, they’ve never done an electric motorcycle, until now. In a partnership with Zero Motorcycles, Ural has developed their first electric motorcycle with sidecar. Before you get too excited, keep in mind that this is their first prototype. It likely won’t see production for at least a few years. But we can still admire the work that went into the new electric motorcycle. The electric sidecar motorcycle prototype was built on Ural’s existing onewheel drive cT platform. The bike uses Zero Motorcycles’ powertrain. That includes the batteries, motor, controller and other necessary electronics. In addition to the bare parts, Zero also provided engineering help in the development of Ural’s first electric sidecar motorcycle. Ural already excels at sidecar motorcycles and wanted to bring the same comfort and utility to electric motorcycles. In addition to the extra stability that a sidecar offers, Ural also takes advantage of the extra room to carry more batteries. Of course more batteries will be necessary to counter the increased rolling and air resistance of an electric sidecar motorcycle. “We always knew our sidecar is the perfect platform to build an electric sidecar motorcycle because it can offer what regular two-wheeled motorcycles don’t: passenger comfort, stability and safety, not to

mention more space for batteries. Electric Ural is very easy to control, thanks to a low center of gravity and optimal weight distribution. It’s very stable thanks to its three wheels. It doesn’t have clutch or gear shifter, twisting the throttle is basically all you need to operate the bike. And it accelerates very quickly – for a Ural. Overall it’s a fun and very versatile vehicle that you can use almost like a car.” The Zero Z-Force motor puts out 45 kW and 110 Nm (81 ft-lbs) of torque. Ural included two Zero battery packs in the electric sidecar motorcycle. Combining a ZF13.0 and ZF6.5 pack provides 19.5 kWh of battery. That’s more battery capacity than an electric Smart car. With that much battery, the electric sidecar motorcycle is rated for up to 165 km (103 mi). The top measured speed is 140 km/h (88 mph), though Ural’s “recommended cruising speed” is a bit more conservative at 105 km/h (65 mph). While this is still an initial prototype, it appears that Ural is serious about continued development to bring an electric sidecar motorcycle to production. “We estimate it would take approximately 24 months to ramp up serial production upon final design approval. The production bike design would incorporate the latest battery technology and charging options.” If you don’t want to wait two years for an electric sidecar motorcycle, then I hope you’ve got the same height and build as a six year old. If not, then you may be in luck if you live in Southern California. Ural’s new electric sidecar motorcycle got its first public debut at the Progressive Motorcycle Show in Long Beach, California on November 16-18, 2018. Ural is currently organizing demo-ride events, and you can sign up on their website. https://www.imz-ural. com/electric/

Canadian motorcycle enthusiasts will soon have a chance to experience Yamaha’s revolutionary Leaning MultiWheel technology with the introduction of the 2019 NIKEN GT. The NIKEN GT takes Yamaha’s new three-wheeled platform to the next level with the addition of standard amenities like heated grips, standard side cases, a touring seat and a tall windscreen. Equipped with an Ackerman steering system, twin 15-inch front wheels and an adjustable, dual-upside-down fork, the NIKEN concept was designed to deliver an amazing corner-carving experience and elevated rider confidence in all conditions. The increased contact patch of the NIKEN produces a higher level of front-end grip (compared to a conventional motorcycle) that is particularly noticeable during cornering and braking. Deep lean angles up to 45 degrees are achievable, a direct result of the stability and technology of the Leaning Multi-Wheel (LMW) system. Truly, the NIKEN’s unique and dynamic characteristics make it feel and handle like no other motorcycle. Visually, the NIKEN GT is unmistakable from anything on the road. The twin front wheels form the focal point from which the futuristic cowl and integrated fuel tank flow, exhibiting a unique, mass-forward look that emphasizes the NIKEN GT’s bold profile. The muscular, athletic stance of the NIKEN is given a level of sophistication on the GT version thanks to lustrous Phantom Blue paint and the twin sets of gold fork legs. Fitted with a range of special equipment, the new NIKEN GT brings added functionality to the three-wheel concept by offering enhanced long-distance touring capabilities and elevated comfort. A tall windscreen gives greater wind and weather protection, while comfort seats enhance the sport touring

experience for both the rider and passenger. Premium, 25-litre, semi-soft side cases are durable, light and easy to handle. Heated grips ensure riding comfort in colder weather conditions, and two 12-volt outlets are included to power or charge your devices. The GT model also comes with a centre stand for maintenance and parking, plus a rear carrier (which can accommodate a top case) with integrated passenger grips. Ample torque and acceleration are provided by a retuned version of Yamaha’s renowned three-cylinder, 847 cc CP3 engine. The NIKEN GT’s sporty side is further elevated by an electronics suite that includes three riding modes, three-level traction control and a standard quick shifter. The new NIKEN GT comes with an MSRP of $20,999. Delivery is expected in February of 2019. An early deposit program is available for those who want to be among the first to own this revolutionary three-wheeled sport tourer. For more information, visit http:// yamaha-motor.ca. The motorcycle front forks hold the front wheel and axle through a pair of clamps called triple trees. The forks have attachment points where the front suspension and brakes are connected. Technically, the forks help to hold the front of the motorcycle together. They are critical elements in determining how the motorbike behaves while traveling, and how fast it reacts when you apply the brakes. With constant use, the front forks can become squeaky and loose in some places. To repair the squeaky front forks of your motorcycle, here is what you need do to. If in doubt, please take it to a mechanic. Step 1 - Before you decide to take the forks apart and do repairs, take the time to first preform a proper inspection. In some cases, it is a lack of oil that causes the squeaking sound. Some squeak can be cured by applying a little oil or grease to the problem area. However, because the front forks are so integral to how your machine behaves on the road, any squeak in the front end should be seen to immediately. Parts can become worn out or loose, and you may need to have the forks taken apart to do the repairs. Step 2 - Before removing the forks, make sure the motorcycle is properly supported. You may use a piece of wood or a car jack to hold the motorcycle upright while you remove the front forks. Remove the brake calipers from the fork legs. Remove the forks one at a time, start by loosing the top pinch bolts that are holding the forks in place. After removing the top pinch bolts, hold the fork in your hand while you loosen the lower pinch bolts. Once the pinch bolt is loose, remove the plastic fork caps. If equipped with screw in caps use the appropriate tool for the job. Step 3 – Some bikes’ front forks have small drain plugs at the bottom of each fork leg. Remove the drain plugs and allow the oil to drain out. You may have to pump the forks several times to ensure that all of the oil has been drained. If there are no drain plugs, you may need to remove the fork first and then, after carefully removing the interior fork spring, turn the fork upside down to remove the oil. To remove the fork springs, open the fork caps at the top of forks, and pull them out. Next, clean the forks using clean rags, then carefully inspect them for any signs of wear, such as scrapes on the inside of the tubes. Ensure that the tubes are not bent by rolling them on a flat surface. Repair, or replace the tubes as required. If the springs are worn out, replace them. Step 4 – Remember, when reinstalling the forks, to replace the dust seals, and to put exactly the required amount and viscosity of oil into each fork leg. When re-attaching the forks, tighten the pinch bolts to the proper torque amount.

Media, Misconceptions, and the Future of Motorcycling By John Lewis Last January, as I waited in line for the motorcycle show to open, the first one of the season, I looked up and down the line and commented to the chap beside me, ‘This looks like the geriatric motorcycle show.’ It wasn’t that there weren’t any young people in the line, it’s just that most of the attendees seemed to be men in their forties, fifties, and sixties. Motorcycle industry pundits and manufacturers alike have apparently recognized this as an issue facing the long-term health of the motorcycle industry. Although a lot of older people are returning to riding after a hiatus, the sixteen to twenty-four-year-old demographic is not taking up the sport in nearly the numbers needed to ensure a viable growing industry. One way manufacturers are combating this is with new, affordable, entry-level motorcycles. I wonder, however, if this is really the solution. ******* About 14 months after I started motorcycling, my girlfriend’s brother was rear-ended while riding his BMW. This put him in the hospital for almost 6 months, four of which he was in a coma. As a result of this close-to-home event, a risk that I was originally willing to accept changed to one I was no longer willing to accept. I gave up motorcycling for a while because my risk tolerance had changed. We have all spoken to someone whose immediate response was, ‘I would never be caught dead on a motorcycle; they’re just too dangerous.’ Their risk tolerance doesn’t allow them to accept the inherent risks of motorcycling. Risk tolerance, decided on an individual basis, it makes sense, plays a role in each person’s decision as to whether they view themselves as ‘a motorcyclist’ (or potential motorcyclist) or not. Why then is there an aversion to motorcycling by a whole generation? A generation doesn’t decide, individuals do. Or do they? In 1986, Ulrich Beck, a German sociologist at the London School of Economics, coined the phrase ‘risk society’ to denote societies with heightened concerns about risk. Exacerbated by the tragic events of 9-11 and countless mass shootings, modern society’s aversion to risk seems only to have gotten stronger.

In his book, ‘Risk: Why We Fear the Things We Shouldn’t…’, Dan Gardner shares, “Childhood is starting to resemble a prison sentence, with children spending almost every moment behind locked doors and alarms, their every moment scheduled, supervised, and controlled.” When I was in grades one and two, all summer long I was sent out of the house after breakfast, often with a packed lunch, and told to be sure I was home by dinner. We’d explore the ravine, cook our hot dogs on little fires we’d make on the sandy shores of the creek, and somehow, every day, we would make it home for dinner. When I was in grades four and five we’d create these elaborate stunts for movies we planned on making one day and then we’d act out these stunts, jumping our bicycles over ramps and cliffs, or falling off the top of the pergola into the pool because we’d been shot by an imaginary bullet: Clint Eastwood all of us! Sure there were some scrapes and bruises but this is how we tested ourselves, tried and failed, learned about risk, and ultimately our own risk tolerance. Closely supervised, our parents would never

have let us do the crazy things we did. But, back then, over-supervision wasn’t an issue. Kids were allowed to be kids. Today, society is different. We don’t give our kids that chance. Today, we are selling motorcycling to a generation that has grown up in a more fearful risk-averse world—a world in which we worry about climate change, and breast cancer, and mass shootings, and terrorist attacks. We feel that we

are living in a riskier world. But we’re not. Today we live longer than we ever have and we’re generally healthier. But that’s not how it’s perceived. To this younger generation, a generation that has not grown up learning about taking risk and testing their limits, you want to sell your motorcycles. Are you sure a lower price is going to do it?

to Suffer Serious Injuries’. Well, my response to that is, ‘No $h!†! Sherlock, we’re not stupid’. What they buried in the body of the article is that you’re only three times more likely to be injured on a motorcycle than in a car, a statistic that doesn’t come close to fanning the flames of public fear as the one they chose. The thing is, if you’re already leery about the risks of motorcycling, you’ll probably stop read ing at the headline and not get the ******* real picture. The bottom line is that the mainWe all know the saying about being stream media choose statistics to cretreated like a mushroom, ‘Kept in the ate high impact headlines which, if not dark and fed $h!†!’ Our main-stream me- totally untrue are often misleading, fan dia is filled with misleading headlines the flames of public fear (risk aversion) specifically written to fan the flames and foster, or at least contribute to, an of public fear. When you deliver this message to an The Toronto Sun newspaper ran the already overprotected, risk-averse genheadline: ‘Motorcycles are More Dan- eration in a “risk society” (one overly gerous Than Ever: Ontario Study.’ concerned with risk), is it any wonder The (written-to-get-reader’s-attention- that younger people are staying away damn-the-truth) conclusion contained from motorcycling in droves? in this headline is drawn from aggregated statistics. Even if it didn’t warp ******* the truth, it doesn’t apply to the individual. The fact is, for you as an individSo far we’ve been discussing the reduction in demand for motorcycling by the younger generation from a macro perspective due to the changing view of risk in our society and how motorcycling, as a perceived high-risk activity, is maligned in the main-stream media. But, as individuals, we can and do decide for ourselves. If motorcycle riders are traditionally the rebels of society (if only in a small way, I don’t mean we’re all outlaw bikers), then why does the ‘macro’ societal thinking have any impact on the adoption of motorcycling by us as individuals. This might be explained by a number of thinking errors, or ‘thinking traps’ that commonly affect how we make decisions. If we start with the premise that there is a prevailing societal bias that motorcycling is unsafe, you will quickly see how these thinking traps can exacerbate this negative perception in our own thinking. Recently, when a friend of mine lost his wife, I suggested that he buy a moual rider, with the advent of anti-lock torcycle so we could ride across Canada braking systems (ABS), traction control, together. His immediate response was, better tires, better protective apparel, a ‘I’d never buy a motorcycle; I’d kill myhost of other new technologies and de- self on it.’ It turned out that when he velopments, and a lot of very good ad- was a teenager, his cousin was killed vanced rider training courses available, in a motorcycle accident. 2019 Kawasaki W800 Café with aluminum rims for their low weight. Steel spokes and nipples were added for their strength, and the factory shot them with a protective coating meant to make them easy to wipe clean after a ride. The right-way-up front forks contribute to the dated look but little else as they’re plain vanilla with nothing in the way of adjustability, and the dual, coil-over rear shocks are minimally adjustable with the requisite preload adjustment as the only tweak. A dual-piston anchor bites the large, 320 mm front disc with an identical caliper to grab the 270 mm rear disc, and I’m proud to see the factory didn’t take the retro angle too far with an antique drum brake out back. The factory doubles down on the modern equipment with an ABS feature that’s part of the standard equipment package. Another feature I’m glad to see is the aircooled parallel-twin engine. There’s just no way to hide a radiator or make it look cool on a bike like this, and the cooling fins on the jugs and exhaust clamps make the antique look complete. Well, almost. The bevel-gear drive shaft that connects the drive gear to the single over-head cam is external for all to see, and that quaint little feature just puts the old-school look over the top.

A 77 mm bore and 83 mm stroke gives the mill its 773 cc displacement, and the 360-degree firing order makes this a true twingle, which is to say both pistons move up and down in sync with a power pulse from one or the other on every rotation kind of like the old Triumph plants. Induction control falls to a pair of 34 mm throttle bodies with a set of sub-throttles that help ensure a smooth idle and seamless transitions as it balances the discrepancies between demand at the grip and what can actually be delivered at any given rpm range. In another move to deliver a modicum of safety, Kawi opts for a slip-and-assist clutch that delivers a light pull at the lever and some protection from excessive backtorque. A five-speed transmission and tough chain drive complete the drivetrain in old-school fashion. The previousgen W800 mill churned out 47 ponies and 44 pounds of grunt, and I expect the new version to land somewhere in that same ballpark. You can have any color you want as long as you want Metallic Magnesium Gray with Galaxy Silver fairing and side covers. Of course, the factory gives you ample opportunity to bump that sticker a bit higher with accessories such as a passenger JC rail, luggage rack, hook-nut set and heated handgrips just to mention a few. Regardless of color choice, I have to admit I like it in spite of myself even if it fills me with the urge to jump up and make myself a root beer and vanilla ice cream float.”

human tendency to rely too heavily on the first piece of information we learn about (the anchor) when making decisions. Without even knowing it, my friend is influenced by this anchoring event, the death of his cousin, to form his current views. The Ottawa Citizen newspaper included the headline: ‘10% of Accidents Caused by Motorcycles’, by which they mean motorcyclists. Please tell me: Where is the news here? Shouldn’t the headline be: ’90% of Accidents Caused by Car and Truck Drivers’ Surely a 90% statistic is more newsworthy than a mere 10% statistic. The newspaper is ‘framing’ motorcycling as dangerous, high risk, and motorcyclists as the ones at fault. If you grew up in a family in which your Dad and Mom both enjoyed motorcycling, your ‘frame’ would be quite different. How things are framed has a huge impact on how we view them. Unfortunately, the main-stream media and much of society seem to ‘frame’ motorcycling as dangerous. To make matters worse, if you are already predisposed with an antimotorcycling bias, a common thinking trap, referred to as ‘confirmation bias’, will have you giving greater weight to everything you read, hear, and see that supports your negative view and lesser weight to everything that contradicts it. So, every time you hear that someone has died in a motorcycle accident or read one of the distorted headlines noted above you will subconsciously say, “See, I knew it, motorcycling IS dangerous!” How we perceive the risk inherent in motorcycling is also influenced by what is called the ‘availability heuristic’. This says that information that is more readily available has a bigger in-

fluence on our thinking than information that is not. For example, frequent news reports of motorcyclists being killed in accidents distort our perception of the risks of motorcycling. In fact, even if you are a motorcyclist, your risk of dying of heart disease or cancer is far greater than of you dying in an accident of any sort, traffic or otherwise, according to national statistics. But, because the news doesn’t report every morning that eight more people died today of heart disease it flies under the radar. So, if you have any interest at all in motorcycling, it behooves you to think for yourself, see past the thinking traps that distort your thinking, and get the real facts about the risks and rewards of motorcycling.

******* You might think that in an ever-increasing risk-averse society, the future of motorcycling is doomed. The good news is, although the statistics may tell a bleak story, individually we are not a statistic and we can mitigate the risks of motorcycling considerably. The one caveat to this is another thinking trap referred to as the ‘better than average effect’. It states that, if asked, about eighty per cent of us think we are better than average at any particular task, e.g., riding a motorcycle. I think you can see the problem here. It’s impossible. Some of us have to be below average, some of us around average, and some of us above. So, when thinking about your need for mitigating the risks, keep in mind, YOU’RE PROBABLY NOT AS GOOD AS YOU THINK! There is a lot that we can do to mitigate the (overstated, in my opinion) risks of motorcycling. Based on the factors that have caused accidents and fatalities, here are some of the things that you can do to reduce your risk: •Get licensed. A certain number of fatalities were riders who were not licensed. •Take a licensing course. Statistically, this has proven to reduce your

•Don’t get complacent or overconfident. •Maintain your motorcycle, e.g., its tires, throttle, brake, and clutch cables, etc. •Ride a motorcycle suitable for your skill level and experience. •Choose a motorcycle with ABS, and if possible, traction control. •If you are returning to riding after a hiatus, take a full course, not just a three-hour refresher course. •Consider wearing an air vest. •Frequently practice key skills like emergency stopping and brake and evade exercises. •NEVER ride impaired by alcohol, drugs, fatigue, hypothermia, whatever. If you’re not all there, don’t get on your bike, or stop if you’re

already riding. •Always ride within your ability.

Newspapers look at aggregated statistics and create from them headlines that support our society’s antiOf course, motorcycling isn’t risk- risk, anti-motorcycling bias stemming free. But, for me, the joy of being out from its growing tendency towards on the road, exploring and touring, risk aversion. But societies don’t ride meeting new people and seeing new motorcycles, individuals do. And, as places, far outweighs the risk. Testing Times

Part 2.

By Mick Brighton After the joy of passing the M1 test my friend brought me down to earth by informing me that part 2 awaited and I should apply quickly as the courses, he thought, would end around September time and if I did not pass part 2 within 120 days of passing M1, I would have to undergo the whole process again. Now the idea of retaking the multi choice question paper and paying another fee did not appeal to me, so I applied to a testing school who were running a course near where I live and all was well except that all my gear, helmet boots, jacket gloves etc. were on the high seas and had not arrived in Canada. I had a few weeks to spare so there was no need to panic but according to my tracking number the ship was in Spain, not on the Atlantic and speeding to Montreal as expected. Yes it was in Spain and it was also going to Rotterdam before heading to

Canada. In total it would arrive about 3 weeks later than I had planned. As time went by and the news came that my belongings were now safely tucked up in customs, I was feeling things were starting to work out but I was totally baffled by a Canadian customs letter informing me that they had more boxes in the shipment that were on the inventory and they obviously could not release them until I could account for the difference. A long story and an even longer delay ensued, so, I had to rearrange my test date. The new testing area was in a place I had never been to and I had no idea how to get there for 9:00 on a Saturday morning. Luckily I did not have to pay a cancelation fee for the rescheduling of the course but the costs were starting to mount up. To start with I had to attend a 2 hour initiation session on a Thursday evening, signing forms and listening to a number of instructors talking about various aspects of the course and giving general advice. Obviously I was the oldest there but not by much and there was a good cross section of experience, or so I thought. On a bright sunny Saturday morning

I was genuinely stunned as we waited in line behind a row of bikes to learn that some people there had not ever sat on a motorbike in their lives and the instructors’ first task was to explain the controls, how they worked what they worked and when to use them. This was followed by finding a partner and one pushed the other for about 50 metres, then changed over and returned to the start line. This exercise was for the benefit of the novices to get them familiar with the position of the controls. As there was an odd number of participants I stood back and watched. At 66 years of age and after 50 years of riding I was not eager to push anybody up or down a carpark (parking lot), thank you. The instructors were good, kind and patient in that order, teaching young and old how to start stop and put the bike into first gear and ride it for a few metres followed by navigating a few obstacles. It was a long day and hot and I was frustrated as we were not allowed to ride on the open road. Understandably, this was a beginner’s course, and who in their right minds would let a complete novice out on the roads of Toronto even if they had an M1.

Day 2 was more exciting as I swapped bikes a few times and we moved into 2nd gear and practiced on a large parking lot which was marked out with a number of bends curves and stop/start points. There was more advice from the instructors, a number of changes of course layout followed and by the final afternoon session and test. I passed, we all did. Now we could be unleashed onto an unsuspecting world. After two days of riding around a parking lot we were not novices, we had received a certificate which had to be presented to a licencing office and in due time we would receive a new M2 licence in the post, or in my case a GM2. My friend has two bikes and he said I should start riding as soon as possible and I could ride with him. He said he would show me some nice countryside but not to expect too many exciting roads. I followed him from the Queen Street area to the Don Valley Parkway (DVP), quickly learning about concrete roads and slippery metal tracks as I followed a streetcar before heading North on the DVP to Richmond Hill. Eventually he led me to Belfountain via some very nice back roads then onto

Orangeville, Newmarket and South on the 400 to the DVP and home. I liked the DVP as it had curves, fast curves, was undulating and had a good surface and fine views. Not like Lake Shore Boulevard or the Gardener which have the largest potholes this side of the Rio Bravo and humps that should be described as launch pads. To most car or truck drivers going over or into these obstacles is no more than a bouncy ride but on a bike it is a serious business especially in the dark. It was a bit too late in the year to start buying a bike so I contented myself with finding out where the bike shops are in Toronto and surrounding areas, looking to see how much I could afford and checking out the insurance situation. Expensive or what? Again I was taken aback at the sums of money that I was being asked to pay. I compared them to 2016 prices for the bike I had in England a Moto Guzzi Stelvio 1200cc. At the time of asking, Toronto policy premiums ranged from $2,500 to $3,800. Well this was going to be a problem that I had not anticipated as in England a fully comprehensive policy with European and British breakdown assistance was £280.00 pounds ($480.00 in 2016). Because riding experience other that in the United States or elsewhere in Canada is not counted in Ontario, I was classed as a novice. I also had to constantly readjust the price tag on every machine I looked at, as in the UK the price you see is the price you pay not the price you see plus tax. I know this is normal practice in every shop/store/supermarket here but when I look at a price tag for thousands of dollars it would be nice if the seller could give me the total figure up front first. I decided to wait out the Winter and to explore the bike scene by going to shows and visiting as many bike related shops/garages as I could get to by public transport. I thought this would also help me to orientate myself and become familiar with place names and where they are. You see, I am from the City of York in North Yorkshire, England and not too far from York lie the towns of Whitby Scarborough, Pickering, Richmond, Malton and a host of other places which are in my part of the UK. It is very confusing when someone says they are going to Whitby or Scarborough as I immediately think of those places in England. For example when someone says, ‘I was in London the other day’, I say “Oh yes, how was your flight”. On my travels I have met some very helpful people and have made a number of good contacts, from Ready Honda on Hensall Circle in Mississauga to GP Bikes in Whitby and from the Moto Guzzi people at Corsa Meccanica on Steels Avenue to the helpful Flying Squirrel Motorcycle shop. Also not forgetting David of Alleycat Motorcycle Service and Moto Revere, a do it yourself maintenance shop on Dupont Street. Bring on Spring!

By Mark Whitehouse In the short time I’ve been riding in Canada, I have noticed huge differences between here and Europe. The best place to start with this, is to consider the roads, the driving conditions and some of the rules that apply to all of that. Driving in Slow Motion My first observation is that everyone in Canada drives in slow motion. What I mean by that, is the speed limits are considerably lower than in Europe and, unlike the Europeans, most Canadians abide strictly to these limits. I shouldn’t really be surprised by that, as Canadians you are a very polite bunch. You don’t like to make a fuss, or draw attention to yourselves, by breaking the rules too much. This consistent adherence to the speed limits has actually been extremely beneficial for me - in that, it has enabled me to adapt very quickly to driving/riding in Canada, and avoid speeding tickets that I would otherwise have gotten, I’m sure of that. In Europe the speed limits are generally regarded as nothing more than guidelines rather than laws. With that in mind, it’s quite normal that highway speeds there will easily exceed 160kph, and nobody really thinks anything of that. It’s only when people drive close to 200kph that Europeans start to get a bit irritable and consider that to be a touch excessive. All in all, drivers in Canada are fairly good and often demonstrate a great deal of consideration towards others. That’s not always the case though - especially on the QEW on the way to and from Niagara. Speed Cameras Another key difference for drivers in Canada is the virtual absence of static speed cameras on the roads. In contrast, if you were to drive from Heathrow airport to central London you will go past 20+ speed cameras in that short 24km route. And that figure doesn’t include the CCTV cameras, or the cameras that are used to monitor traffic. Perhaps you would expect that all the cameras in the UK would be a deterrent to speeders, but they are not. This is due to the fact that only about 10% of these cameras are active at any one time and everybody knows it. Even with this absence of speed cameras, the fact that poor driving in Canada is far less common than in Europe is probably nothing more than a representation of the Canadian people. You are genuinely nice people and you drive that way too. What a pleasant surprise and a welcome change that is for me. Roads The general condition of the roads in

Canada is far better than most of Europe - certainly compared with the UK. Sure there are exceptions to this but these only serve to prove the rule. This makes the roads an absolute dream for bikers - what with general absence of road furniture (manhole covers and utility inspection covers) and the lack of pot holes. you may see it differently but these roads are far superior to European roads. When it comes to the road system in Ontario, though, I have already realised that there are two distinct seasons - Winter and Construction. This is particularly noticeable in the more densely populated and the busiest areas - such as central Toronto and especially around Pearson Airport. There is a constant battle to maintain the road infrastructure - mainly due to the extremes of the climate. Nonetheless, it is admirable that disruption times are significantly less than in the UK - albeit nothing like as efficient as Germany or the Nordics. Police The traffic police in Canada are an entirely different animal to their counterparts in the UK. I have already managed to have a few encounters with the ‘boys in blue’ but these have all been quite genuinely pleasant surprises. For the uninitiated (me) it is remarkably difficult to spot a police car. Sure there are the obvious ‘black and whites’, but there are also black American muscle cars with a black ‘Police’ sticker on the side. This black-on-black appearance makes the vehicles appear very incognito. I’m sure this ‘stealth mode’ is quite a deliberate move on the part of the OPP. By the time you realize this is a police car it’s usually too late and you have already been pulled over. Let me tell you about my first encounter with the OPP - which was down to my utter stupidity. I was cruising along the QEW at about ninety very late one summer evening. The next thing I realize I was being followed by this black stealth bomber and then the inevitable blue lights sprung into life. I pulled over to the side of the road and this six-footer got out of the stealth bomber. As he walked over to me it was only then that I realized he was a policeman. I took off my helmet and walked to the back of the bike to see whether my tail light was broken - confident in the knowledge that I had done nothing wrong. I know I hadn’t been speeding, as I was only doing 90 after all and the speed limit was 110. We greeted one another with a smile and the first thing he said to me was “That’s a lovely bike sir.” “Thank you.” I said in a curious tone, as I wondered why I had been pulled over in the first place. Surely it couldn’t be because he wished to admire the Ducati. We then discussed the bike for a few moments and he mentioned that he hadn’t seen a Ducati before and admired the styling. “It’s obviously rather a fast bike.” he said. “Actually, yes it is.” I replied, still confused as to why he had pulled me

hundred and forty-five.” I looked confused and wondered whether he now was messing with me. Maybe he was down on his quota for speeding tickets that week and was looking for a soft target (me) to redress this deficit. “I am sorry to disagree with you officer but I was definitely not speeding. As I said I was doing ninety.” I replied again with a confident tone to my voice. There was a pause in the conversation for what seemed like an eternity before the policeman looked at me and said, “you’re English, right?” “Yes I am, but I live here now and I fail to see the relevance.” I replied. There was another pause and the policeman looked at me and asked, “Do you mean you

However, this Canadian police officer looked at me with a smile on his face and said, “As it is late, and the highway is not that busy, I am going to just give you a warning this time. Please remember that we drive in kilometres per hour in Canada.” “I am so sorry, I honestly didn’t realize officer.” I was embarrassed by my own stupidity, “and thank you.” We chatted for a while longer in which time I discovered that he was, indeed, a biker himself - although he much preferred off-road and trail riding. were doing 90mph?” “Yes, I replied.” I turned and looked around and there was a speed limit sign just up the road that displayed ‘110’. “So, as you can see officer, I was not speeding in any way or was I anywhere close to it.” The policeman also looked at the sign and then quietly said to me, “We drive in kilometres per hour in Canada, sir.” It was a moment or two before this sunk in, and then I just burst out laughing - more out of nervousness than anything else - as I knew that this was ‘a fair cop’ and I began to realize I could be in a spot of bother here. Now here is where the Canadian police differ enormously from those in the UK. In the UK I was now going to

over. Perhaps he was a biker himself and wanted to see a Ducati up close and personal. “Do you know how fast you were going sir?” he said calmly. I do hate this question from the police as they already know the answer. It’s actually a question that the asker could win a prize for ‘stating the bleeding obvious’. I thought for a moment and then confidently said, “I know precisely how fast I was going as a matter of fact.” I paused as I watched his reaction. “I was doing ninety.” The policeman looked at me whilst trying to assess whether I was messing with him. adventureawaits Dear Santa, Here are some things I need for next year’s moto-camping adventures… By Vykstrom ‘Vic’ Ryder You might be dreaming of a white Christmas, just like the ones you used to know. I’m not. I’m dreaming about next year’s moto-camping adventures and all the places I’d like to go. Although there are some of you who like to pack light and rough it. I’m more of a, “If I can make things a little nicer on the road I will” kinda guy. Whatever your style, if you’re like me, every year

you like to add to, or upgrade something in, your camping kit that will make your days on the road just a little bit safer, easier, or more luxurious. It might be replacing old gear with something lighter. It might be upgrading your technology like a better GPS. It might be adding a “comfort of home” that can make each day just a little bit brighter. It may be something you’ve always dreamed of having, or an item suggested by a seasoned touring pro you’d never even thought of. It may be a luxury item like a Cafflano Klassic Coffee Maker (available from MEC for CA$114.00) or a necessity like a headlamp, or tools, or spare parts. Whatever it is, here is a list that will get you thinking

Great Ideas, Gifts, and Stocking Stuffers for the Moto-Camper Gaffer tape (because when you have to MacGyver it, it can save the day) •Cable ties (another MacGyver staple) •Fuses and relays •A spare ‘X’ which is the component that fails most frequently on your bike •A pair of mini tongs or chopsticks •An adventure lightweight first aid kit (It doesn’t hurt to take an Adventure First Aid course either.) •Pepper spray for bears •Automatic motorcycle chain oiler, save yourself the trouble of chain maintenance •Air bed and 12v pump gives you a comfy bed—priceless—dirt cheap (and you can use the same pump for your tires if you repair a flat) •Multi-fuel cooker, so you can use the petrol from the tank. It means you only need one bottle and it saves space •Mini Maglite (Bonus tip: Wrap a ton of duct tape and electrical tape around it. It means that you won’t have to carry a roll of each around and it will make you MacGyver ready.) •Air compressor (you can use it for your bed too, remember?) •Tire plug kit

about what could make your next adventure just that little bit better. Here is where I have to come clean. I knew that most of us can think of the basic clothing and supplies we need for touring and camping. I, however, wanted to find out what seasoned motorcycle touring aficionados and moto-campers took with them—items that they had added to their kits because they were caught short, items that would have, and now do, make their touring and camping experience the best it can be. To do this I went on a number of motorcycle camping and touring groups on Facebook and asked. Here are some of the suggestions of about what you should do and/

or take with you. It is not meant to be all inclusive as I asked for ideas for items and ideas that people may not think of themselves, items or ideas that each moto-camper added because of hard-won experience. This list includes some ideas that, in themselves, can’t be added to your Christmas Wish List; it wasn’t put together for that purpose. That said, any item or idea may suggest something that can. Worst case, even if there’s an item that isn’t something you can or want to add to your Christmas Wish List, it may be something that you might consider adding to your kit. So, WIN-WIN either way!

•Flashlight or headlamp •Tools/bike specific tools/ bike toolkits (e.g., Cruz Tool Kits) •Install a power supply or 2 on your bike •Paper maps for areas you want to visit •Good rain gear doubles as an extra layer of warmth •Pack clothing in waterproof, ziplock bags. Roll air out to make them smaller •Baby wipes: good to clean your hands, face, and public toilets and lightly soiled dishes •Disposable plates fit nicely in metal camping plates: less clean up time •Stay hydrated (I bought a Camelbak water backpack last year and found that the mouthpiece could go up under my helmet so I could hydrate on the go.) •A cooling vest (I used one last year on a 42º day—saved me from heat stroke) •Lockbox is a safe place to store money, credit cards, passport, ID. I attach one at the bottom of s saddlebag with a “fake bottom” to conceal it •Crank up waterproof flashlights are great in emergencies •Set of booster cables or a personal booster pack •Tarp: doubles as a floor mat or emergency shelter from heavy rain or hail •Extra hoodie (choose a waterproof version to give extra weather protection) continued on PG. 20

adventureawaits CONTINUED FROM PG.18

Dear Santa, Here are some things I need for next year’s moto-camping adventures… •Waterproof clothes-packing pods (some have a clear window to allow you to see what’s inside) •One towel if all you’re doing is camping; it dries quickly bungied to the top of your gear •LED headlamp—a must for trying to unpack and set-up camp in the dark •Rechargeable LED light—it has white and red lighting, dimming and flashing functions as well. Collapses and packs small for travel •Collapsible cooler •Portable grill (some sites don’t have grills) e.g., a small 10” square wire cooling rack set on rocks because the wood will eventually ignite •Belt: makes a tourniquet •Fleece under-jacket: doubles as a jacket off the bike and rolls up for a soft pillow •Insulated stainless steel flask: great for cold drinks in hot weather •A decent chair is a must have, not a stool •All in one wash-up/shampoo/clothes washing liquid •Comfortable off-bike footwear •Small containers of seasoning and spices •I like my food so proper knife, fork, and spoon •Double skin mug •A container of favourite tea •Slacken handlebar switchgear slightly so a drop will rotate them rather than break the levers •Find all the little spaces inside the bike that you can place or tape spare bits like bulbs, fuses, etc.

The ideas and suggestions from fellow moto-campers were really appreciated. As they are suggestions from seasoned moto-campers and laypeople alike, the safety or efficacy of any idea found herein should be tested by you and only incorporated into your kit or routine after you have done your own due diligence, investigation and/or testing. And, don’t be a dummy like I was. No one person carries all of the things on this list. So, when thinking about the

things that would make your camping trip better, also keep in mind the amount of space you have. If you add something, you may have to remove something. Another tip I learned from hard-won experience, is not to pack until you are full. You may want to buy something while you are away. You may need to buy groceries, or pick up firewood, or any number of things. So, pack until you are eighty per cent full, NOT one hundred per cent full. If it goes like me,

Some general moto-camping tips: Research the areas you’re travelling: weather, temperatures, storm systems, etc. Always let someone know where you’re going: just in case. Think of multi-purpose items that pack easy. Take the bare minimum. Travel-sized packs are easier than full-sized. Less is more. Keep an eye on the weather. Make days with bad forecasts cheap hotel days. Pick one with laundry and free breakfast. Stock up on their fruits & snacks for the day. Do bike maintenance at least one month prior to leaving. Keep spare keys in an unlocked container on your bike if you’re travelling solo. If in pairs, carry each other’s keys. Determine your daily budget: we budgeted $100 a day for fuel (2 bikes), accommodations and groceries. Some days we went over, so we’d make it up choosing less expensive campsites. BEARS! If the park rangers say there are bears in the area, comply with the rules. No food, toothpaste or anything left out on your site OR IN YOUR TENT! Put waste in the bear-proof containers as directed and you’ll be fine. One day last year I left my campsite to remove some garbage to the bear-proof containers and I returned to see a bear sitting on the ground beside my tent.
