Blackline - Newest Release from Harley-Davidson Concord, ON (Jan. 21, 2011) – Lean as wire, hard as iron, and dark as a tar road at midnight, the new BlacklineTM motorcycle is a Harley-Davidson® Softail® model pared to the bone. A rebellious creation of the Dark CustomTM movement, the BlacklineTM model celebrates three fundamental elements of motorcycling: mechanical beauty, internal combustion, and the long black line of the road ahead. The BlacklineTM motorcycle balances allegiance with rebellion, discarding previous conventions of colour and chrome for a Dark CustomTM look that is honest, functional, and attainable. Visual elements of the original bobber movement are combined with the raw, hand-hewn style embraced by today’s young builders. The BlacklineTM motorcycle, available in Canada at a MSRP of $17,149, throws new fuel on a fire that burns across generations: an unquenchable desire to ride. Lean and Tight Stripped to the legal limit, the BlacklineTM motorcycle keeps decorative trim and lighting sparse. The rear fender is bobbed high and tight over a slim, 144-mm tire that emphasizes an authentic hard-tail profile. The compact headlight and speedometer are tucked low into the wide, FX front end, and there is just enough shine to make the black parts look blacker. Black-rimmed laced wheels complete a look that is tough, tempered, and undeniably typical of the HarleyDavidson® Brand. The styling spotlight shines on a Big Twin
engine dressed in black and silver, and on a fuel tank shaved smooth and low. Aboard the BlacklineTM bike, the rider hugs the frame on the lowest two-up seat ever offered by Harley-Davidson Motor Company, and reaches high for new Split DragTM handlebars that are bolted right to the top triple-clamp. The Softail® chassis uses rear suspension control provided by coil-over shock absorbers mounted horizontally along the frame rails below the powertrain, where they are kept out of sight. So while the swingarm section replicates the lines of a vintage hardmotorcycle detail frame, the Blackline livers suspension performance and handling that are thoroughly modern. The internally counter-balanced Twin Cam 96BTM engine is rigid-mounted within the frame, creating a solid connection between rider and power that moves the motorcycle to enhance the emotional riding experience.
Key features of the 2011 Blackline motorcycle include:
Six-speed Cruise DriveTM transmission. NEW Round air cleaner cover in brilliant chrome. NEW Black Denim powder-coated frame and swingarm.
NEW Powertrain styling. – The powertrain is finished with a gloss black powder coating on the rocker box covers, the crankcase, the outer primary cover, and the transmission side cover. The cylinders have a silver powder coating with machined highlights. The derby cover and timing covers are chromed. Rigid-mounted, counter-balanced Twin Cam 96BTM V-Twin engine with Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection (ESPFI), rated at 89 ft. lbs., peak torque at 3,250 rpm.

2011 Harley-Davidson Blackline.
NEW Profile laced aluminum wheels with black anodized rims. Front wheel is 21 x 2.15 inches; rear wheel is 16 x 3 inches. Dunlop® D402 tires are MH90-21 front and MU85B16 rear. NEW FX front end with black powder-coated triple clamps and black painted fork lowers. NEW Split DragTM internally wired handlebars mount directly to the top triple clamp.
NEW Analogue speedometer on a tripleclamp mount that also holds indicator lights. LCD screen on the speedometer includes low-fuel warning and “kilometres to empty” display function. The Canadian configuration features a new bobbed rear fender with centre mounted LED tail light and licence plate illuminator, along with a new composite licence plate holder mounted on the lower edge of the fender.

The new VT1300CSA Sabre blends distinctive style with muscular performance like no other cruiser out there. The advanced 1,312 cc V-twin engine features Honda’s Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI). Brain Storm opinions
TIM SHAMESS
Editor, The Motorcycle Times
Real Bikers? If there is one term from the motorcycling community that truly aggravates me it is “Real Biker.” The past few weeks I received a couple emails from people referring to themselves as “Real Bikers” and mocking other aspects of motorcycling. Even at the Motorcycle Supershow this year while speaking to some of the crowd (something I absolutely look forward too, I love meeting you folks out there), some people referred to themselves as “Real Bikers.” Some were even wearing t-shirts stating “Real Biker” and, even better, “Hardcore Biker.” I’m sorry but if you have to advertise that you are a “Real Biker” or “Hardcore” then by default you are not either. I want to know who has set the standards for being a “Real Biker.” What does it take to go from “Mock Biker,” to “Real Biker?” If someone wakes up in the midst of a mid-life crisis and goes out and buys a motorcycle, gets some superbad tats and frilly leathers does that then qualify them to be a “Real Biker?” What if someone goes out and takes a couple track days decked out in the finest racing leathers? Does that qualify them to go from “Faux Biker” to “Real Biker?” It’s time to stop worrying about being a “Real Biker” and concentrate on when the next ride is. I don’t care what you ride; I don’t care if your leathers have a brand name logo. I don’t care how far you ride or how long you have been riding. What I care about, and what makes you a real biker is your desire to improve yourself as a motorcyclist and the motorcycle community as a whole. Like the saying goes, “It doesn’t matter what you ride, just that you ride.” A “Real Biker” promotes all that is good about our sport and defends it to the best of their abilities. The real bikers are guys like Don Norris, author of Riding with Attitude; his
autobiography chronicling his life and his time as one of the founding members of the Satan’s Choice. Don presently rides a Honda Goldwing and is not afraid to put on the miles. In my opinion Don is a “Real Biker” and I have never heard him use the term “Real Biker.” The Real Bikers are the people who truly love the sport and welcome new riders into it. People like Jacquie McKim, our Global Rider columnist who decided she wanted a motorcycle adventure and threw caution to the wind and took that adventure. My good friend D’Arcy was told when his son James was born he would never walk and would be a Special Needs child. I guess someone should have mentioned this to James because not only does he walk, he runs, he jumps, drives a car, oh… and he also rides his own motorcycle. James, in my opinion is not a “Real Biker,” he is a TRUE BIKER and is the epitome of what riding is all about. A beautiful sound of summer is James’ CBR125 buzzing by my house; a bike he is proud of. As you are aware there are things coming down the pipe that we as motorcyclists, not “Real Bikers” must stand together for. Caledon has implemented a motorcycles only noise by law, as have some other Canadian cities. There are laws coming that will affect emissions on motorcycles that may have detrimental effect on performance. And before you start your emails flipping because I am anti green, I am not, but there must be an acceptable medium for both motorcyclists and the environment. I’ll leave you all with this thought. How is it that we can all get together at a charity event and stand together as motorcyclists helping a good cause, but when someone is not up to these “Real Biker” standards they must somehow be less of a person? I just don’t get it.
We Deliver the news that matters to riders,
“Motorcycling is about doing what you want with your choice of motorcycle, screw the peer pressure to follow a course determined by others (me included). It’s about freedom.” Spend five minutes with Max Burns, two-wheelin’ writer, connoisseur of butter tarts & pastries, social, political, ethical and environmental activist, and you’ll
because we ride too.

Motorcycle News Yamaha Announces 2012 Super Ténéré Pricing
Law Enforcement Goes Electric
The Scotts Valley Police Department became the first law enforcement agency in California to accept delivery of a Zero DS electric motorcycle to assist in local patrols and traffic enforcement. The acquisition serves as a benchmark for evaluating the performance capabilities of the Zero DS in law enforcement situations, such as responding through traffic and on local bike trails. Due to its remarkably quiet all-electric drivetrain, the Zero DS is the perfect motorcycle for patrolling in urban areas where noise may be a factor. “We are excited to be the first police department in California to receive an electric Zero motorcycle because it will allow our officers to patrol more places, more often,” said Lt. John Hohmann of the Scotts Valley Police Department. “Riding a police motorcycle requires a very special skill set because the officer needs to be alert and keep the public safe, while simultaneously scanning the
area for criminal activity. We anticipate that the upright seating position, dual sport configuration and silent operation of the Zero DS is the perfect combination for local patrols and we can’t wait to put it to the test.” “The city of Scotts Valley and its police department have been very supportive of Zero Motorcycles and we are very pleased that they chose us,” said Jay Friedland, Vice President of Sustainability for Zero Motorcycles. “We hope this opportunity serves as the touchstone for other law enforcement agencies to see the benefits electric motorcycles have when it comes to community patrols and traffic enforcement. The silent operation of the Zero DS allows each officer to hear what’s going on around them, which enhances awareness and safety. Zero DS motorcycles also are a great cost-effective solution for small departments and we are proud to be able to support those who keep our communities safe.” TMT

MCC Appoints New President The Motorcyclists Confederation of Canada (MCC) is pleased to announce that Daniel H. Tessier has been named the new President of the association, effective January 17, 2011. Daniel has about 25 years of progressive experience in association management, and possesses a solid background in strategic communications, advocacy, government relations and membership services. Daniel is recognized as a leader and consensus builder for his work in national grassroots advocacy and government relations. Able to communicate fluently in French and English, his success is rooted in a commitment to fostering and maintaining productive, collaborative relationships with all stakeholders, including government, suppliers and members. “In addition to being an avid off-road and road motorcyclist, Daniel’s proven record of achievements in advancing issues that matter to members will be invaluable as the MCC continues to grow and provides value-added services and products to motorcyclists throughout Canada,” said Liz Jansen, Board Chair. “Daniel will guide the Board’s efforts to increase membership, enhance the member benefits package, strengthen stakeholder outreach, improve our effectiveness as an advocacy organization, and raise the MCC’s profile.” Daniel most recently served as President and CEO of the Geomatics Industry Association of Canada, based in Ottawa. Happy New Year! Hope you enjoyed great moments of “ringing in the new” and bidding farewell to the old! Outside of being thankful and extending good wishes to friends and family my attention is passionately in another part of the world. It’s of 186 motorcycles, 83 quads and a total of 13 women who on January 1st rapidly rode over the starting line of the 2011 edition of “Le Dakar”! There’s nothing more thrilling to a motorcyclist than to celebrate the first day of the New Year watching “Le Dakar” the most famed motorcycle endurance competition in the world get underway! Determined and incredible adventurers set out to complete more than 9,500 kms including 5,000 kms of racing, spread over 13 stages of a dense programme! And it’s a motorcyclist we have to thank for the Dakar phenomenon. The French Thierry Sabine created the event when he got lost on his motorcycle in the Libyan Desert during the Abidjan-Nice Rally in 1977. Upon returning to France still in wonder of the landscape he’d experienced, he promised himself he would find a way to share his fascination with as many people as possible. He proceeded to design a route starting in Europe (Paris its starting point) continuing to Algiers and crossing Agadez - eventually finishing at Dakar. He came up with the motto for his inspiration: “A challenge for those who go. A dream for those who stay behind.” His plan quickly became a reality thanks to Thierry’s immense passion coupled with “the measure of madness”. The “Paris-Dakar”, a unique event ignited by the spirit of adventure and friendship between all, is open to all riders. Through all its years, and now in 2011 the 31st edition, it has never failed to challenge, surprise and excite! Its remarkable growth through the years has more than doubled. In its first run in 1979 just 80 autos, 12 camion (French for “truck-bus”) and 90 combined motorcycles/quads started out. Today there are 430 total entries! Cars represent 146; mo-

torcycles 186; 33 quads and 68 trucks. Impressive numbers especially considering the registration fees alone are near $85,000 and that doesn’t include airfare, fuel, and parts/extras needed. There’s also the Dakar’s deadly reputation which to date has claimed the lives of approximately fifty competitors. Dakar women contenders nowadays are the norm with many firsts for women now laid to rest. The Swedish Maria Sandell in 2002 marked history by being the first female to compete in the Dakar rally on a motorcycle! But there were women prior to Maria in the car and quad classes. This event is tough and it’s rough, and a place of no allowances for fussy lady-like behaviours. Take basic toilet needs for example, digging a hole in the sand is very much the norm. The lack of sleep, physical challenges and hellish conditions are just a part of Dakar’s weapons battling against your success! The German female Jutta Kleinschmidt first competed in 1988 on a BMW. In 1994 she switched to the car category and became the first woman in the event’s history to win a stage. In 1999 Jutta became the first woman to lead the overall ranks to enjoy a podium finish. She then became the first woman to win overall in 2001! In 2006 England’s Patsy Quick became the first British woman to finish the Dakar on two wheels! There were only two other women who completed the event that year, the Dutch Mirjam Pol and Swedish Annie Seel. She rode for a couple of years on the Dutch team and is again riding in 2011 but for a French team and on a Honda. In fact there was a discussion before I left The Netherlands about the opportunity for me to join the team! It doesn’t matter whether you have the fortune to challenge Dakar for yourself “It’s a dream for those who stay behind” as Thierry stated! And this one will be no different. The Dakar will fuel my passion and imaginings for riding – the best “mental setup” for the year’s road ahead!

Dan Woosley - Bikes in the Rising Sun Japan is probably not high on the list of places you think of when it comes to a builder making big North American style custom choppers. But then again, Dan Woosley is no ordinary builder, and his bikes are definitely causing a stir in the Land of the Rising Sun. Born and raised in Waco, Kentucky, Dan comes from a long line of gearheads, watching his dad repair everything from hot rods, to farm equipment, to bikes is where his skills were honed. “I learned the vast majority of what I know from watching him deal with whatever came up,” Dan explains, “and every now and then he’ll still show me that I don’t quite have it all figured out yet.” Like many others, Dan’s first motorcycle experiences were on a dirtbike at the early age of 10 or 11 years old, riding a 76 Yamaha YZ 175 his dad had purchased for both Dan and his brother to use. “It was bored .080 over, and ran like a scalded dog; we rode the tires off of it!” A keen interest in karate (by “keen interest” I mean 26 years of study) sowed the seeds of desire for Japan and 1997 saw Dan head there as an exchange student. Marrying a Japanese woman in 2000 soon translated to a 2003 move their, and Dan’s long overdue desire to build a bike from the ground up soon had wrenches spinning on his first build. “Prior to moving to Japan, I had really been more into the restoration of old musclecars, mainly Dodges and Plymouths, but decided to shift focus to bikes.” His love and restoration work of these
musclecars is where much of his inspiration to create bikes comes from. “Every spring and fall, from as far back as I can remember my family would go to the rod runs that were held in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, Tennessee; there were so many incredible hotrods and bikes. I remember all those wild paint jobs and huge engines, the rumble, and the burnouts; I guess that’s just what’s gotten inside my head.” Like the musclecars he draws inspiration from, his bikes often feature a minimalist approach, Dan explains, “I was always drawn to all the stripped down, bare bones machines where pretty much the only parts on them either made them go fast or stop.” Building custom bikes in Japan can present its own set of problems; while Dan says there is no shortage of parts available; the price can be very expensive compared to The United States. “A lot of times it’s much cheaper for me to buy parts in the US and pay to have them shipped over than it is to buy the stuff here.” Another challenge is finding the hardware to bolt everything together. “The biggest pain is the smallest stuff - hardware. Inch size bolts, fittings and stuff are pretty hard to come by here and ridiculously expensive when you can find it. Case in point, for socket head screws I have to drive about an hour one way because there’s only one store in the area that carries any variety of inch stuff at all - and it ain’t cheap! Even then, I had to get a buddy of mine in Canada to send me over some fine thread 5/16” ny-
lon lock nuts to attach the drive gear to the end of my Cycle Electric generator (thanks, John!). No one had them here, I mean no one.” Though the hardware may be tough to find, strangely enough the things you assume would be hard to get isn’t always the case. “Stuff that you think would be rare, like parts for knuckleheads, Panheads, etc., is surprisingly available at swap meets and the like. Though many motorcycle shops on this side of the planet have closed their doors thanks to the continuing poor economy, it has been a benefit for Dan, “Things haven’t been too tough over here, and the economic troubles have served to raise the Yen in relation to the US dollar, which means anything I buy in the States is cheaper for me than it used to be. It really has made a difference. Though Japan is the home turf of the “Big Four” motorcycle companies Dan was surprised at the number of Harley’s he’s seen in Japan and how receptive the Japanese culture has been to the chopper lifestyle. “I think you would honestly be shocked at how many Harleys there are over here, I know I have been. NOW I know why it’s so hard to find decent older iron in the US nowadays it’s all over here!” In December 2010 Dan showed his 1940 Knucklehead at the Yokohama Hot Rod and Custom Show and was pleased with the response and excitement it generated. “Just to see folks stop and take out their cameras specifically to take a shot of something I

built was the highest praise I could hope for; an honest reaction from an honest person with no motives other than what they like. That’s as good as it gets for me.” Though the future is unsure as to what the new trends will be with builders constantly trying to get more radical with every build, Dan is confident the chopper market will continue to thrive in Japan, “We’ve seen the whole “who can mount the fattest rear tire?” thing, and now it seems like everyone’s getting into “custom baggers” now. So what’s the next fad? No matter what fads come and go, I think there will always be a pretty big segment of people into horsepower and stripped down bikes that go fast.” Dan continues to hone and evolve his skills and his efforts are shown in the bikes he creates. “I love to do stuff I haven’t done before and learn in the process. That’s a huge part of the appeal for me of building something; to be able to push myself to do something I’ve never done before, and to improve on the things that I have done. There’s a saying that I love, “Cool don’t come in a catalog,” I generally find that to be true.” Dan’s bikes will soon be the ones making the waves in not only Japan, but world wide too. When a builder loves what they are doing, a part of their very soul goes into their creations, and Dan is no exception. “I’m really into doing things using old processes. There’s just something so right about creating with your own hands. I love the feeling and the heart that a piece takes on when it’s been molded by the human hand. TMT

Honda R&D VT13OO series Customs Competition
‘Slammer’
‘Switchblade’
Starting with 2010 Honda VT1300’s 3 young designers from Honda Reseach & Development Americas located in Southern Calinfornia were given the opportunity to build customs based on where their visions would take the Fury, Stateline & Sabre. The designers were given free reign within a limited budget and 2 requirements, full on runners, and stay true to the core of the production vehicle. Another reality was that the designers had only 3 months to realize their builds from start to finish. The Furious (Chopper), Switchblade (ProDrag) and Slammer (Bagger) debuted at the December 17th 2010 Long Beach, CA International Motorcycle show and will continue on the nationwide tour through 2011.
2010 Stateline “Slammer” (Bagger)
‘Furious’
Based on a 2010 Stateline, designer Erik Dunshee (Honda R&D Americas) reveals the life of low. Fueled by elegance and power the Slammer sports a fully adjustable air-ride suspension, NAV/Multimedia, 10” subwoofer and 500 watts of power. With a full front end conversion, including a lean 23“ custom wheel, the designer achieved all this without frame or engine mods.

2010 Fury “Furious” (Hardtail Chopper)
2010 Sabre “Switchblade” (Pro Drag) Taking the 2010 Sabre, designer Edward Birtulescu (Honda R&D Americas) conceived Switchblade. A racing inspired cruiser that took styling cues from Formula1 and MotoGP. With one look you know that Switchblade is fully committed to precision and performance. Full Carbon fiber dress, racing 3 way adjustable suspension and a single sided swing arm with a 535 chain conversion optimize the single focus of this design, speed. Switchblade has a mass centralized proportion to reinforce this super sport assault. Specs: Stock frame, VT1300cc engine & tank. 3way fully adjustable sport suspension.
Based on the 2010 Fury, Nick Renner (Honda R&D Americas) introduces “Furious”, a bold blend of new and old school flavor. Pounding the street with a 23 inch wheel up front and a 20 on the rear, Furious makes no apologies. 45 degree rake and converted hard tail create a clean, pure statement that is simply chopper. Metal flake, variegated leafing, and diamond stitched seat contrast with the five spoke crushers and Fury tank. Long and low, clean and mean... Furious is an instant Neo-Classic. Specs: Stock: VT1300cc engine & tank Front 23” wheel Rear 20” Exposed shaft drive Hard tail custom spec frame conversion (37degree head pipe with a 8 degree fork angle offset)

VIEW- Video Interactive Eyewear is a new London, Ontario based company, started in 2010 by Sharon Robertson and Bruce Richardson. They are a web based store, and will ship anywhere in North America. “We specialize in Video eyewear, currently in the form of video sunglasses,” Sharon continues, “We have other products coming online later this year, including scuba masks and ski goggles incorporating the Video camera unit.” If there is one thing we as a motorcyclists love, it is reliving trips and different rides we have taken, and VIEW sunglasses allow us to take that to a whole new level. Sharon graciously sent me a set for review. The kit comes complete with a stylish pair of sunglasses with the video camera built right in, a charger, USB cable, a 2G memory card, and a hard-shell storage case. Before you start thinking the glasses must be bulky and clunky if
the camera is built in, not at all, though the arms contain the electronics, they are no bigger than an average pair of sunglasses and are quite comfortable. A rubberized frame is also available which will
no doubt add to the comfort. The camera takes videos from the centre of the nose piece and is Hi Res: 720/480, 1.3 mg. Pixel Format, other sizes are available with Hi DEF, 720P, (the same format HDTV is shot in). All feature a progressive scan format, should you want to take some action shots. The glasses were easy to use (once I decided to read the instructions) with 2 small buttons
on the arm. The few questions I did have were promptly answered via email. “We pride ourselves on offering quick response to any tech questions or problems with our product.” The 2G card holds about 1/2 hour of video or about 300 digital pictures (yes, they take pictures too!). The quality of both
videos and pictures is excellent and should more space be required, you can have up to 16G with any micro SD card. Extra cards are in the works so that VIEW can offer a one stop shopping experience. The battery life on the glasses provides about 5 hours of recording time; enough to record a good ride or some time at an event. I have to say I was very surprised at the quality of the videos and the sound, some vid-
eos from the Toronto Motorcycle Supershow turned out very well, the picture quality was good. Downloading on to a computer was no problem at all, though my desktop computer is an older model, the video was a bit choppy. My new lap top however, with a faster processor provided a perfectly smooth video. Pricing starts at $59.99 plus taxes and shipping and rises to $69.99 depending on the resolution you prefer. The glasses come with smoke coloured lenses and feature interchangeable lenses, available in red, clear, yellow and black for different lighting conditions. A kit is also available with glasses and all 4 colours of lenses for $79.99. One complaint I have is I generally use a full face helmet and there was no way I could wear them with this style of helmet. With my half helmet they were perfect and very comfortable, I am sure they will be fine with a three quarter helmet as well. All in all VIEW Sunglasses are a great product and are perfect for the open road. For more information be sure to go to www. videowatch.ca and check out the video sample from the London Ride for Cancer.

Electric Motorcycles With gas prices at $1.14 for regular unleaded, and more for premium fuels and diesel, it’s safe to say that the days of fuel prices being below a dollar per liter are behind us. One can only imagine what we’re in for as time goes by. I expect the worst, and a day will come when it will be an absolute luxury to take the car anywhere other than to work. I’m like most, in that I must commute to work due to the distance from my home. Taking the bus, street car or train won’t cut it in my situation, so I have no choice but to drive to work or the ride the bike if the weather is agreeable. At current gas prices, I spend on average, $500 for fuel a month. I would imagine that most people are in this range of expenditure for fuel, and probably more if you’re a two or three car family! January is usually a time to review personal budgets and finances, in pursuit of tightening up the purse strings to stretch the dollar for as far as it will go. Value for the dollar is the new religion in 21st Century North America. When I got to the section on fuel costs in my budget, I started thinking “How the hell can I make an impact on this expense” as it’s like another mortgage payment every month. Somehow, I had to try and lower this expense. As most of you are aware, electric cars (true electrics, not hybrids) are making their way into the mainstream. You will be hearing more on the Chevy Volt, the Mini Electric and the Nissan Leaf as they make their way to dealership floors this year. Other companies like ZENN, Tesla, Ford, Toyota, Honda and a host of others are busy spending the millions in government funds with a mandate to develop, test and market sustainable electric offerings. There is quite a hot debate going on, as to the viability & reliability of these vehicles in the real world. As we live in a climate of extreme’s in weather, these vehicles have a hard time here with snow, salt and moisture. California is the place you want to be to own a true electric vehicle, for us Canucks, it would have to be British Columbia. But, at an average price of $35 to $40 thousand dollars, I think I will re-shelve
this ‘electric opportunity’ for a while and sit on the fence & watch the development continue until they make one that I can drive to Sudbury in a blizzard. Then, a light went off in my head……Motorcycles!!! “That’s right” I said to myself, there are manufacturers out there working on electric motorcycles! The more I thought about it, the more it made sense. Electric motorcycles wouldn’t have to worry about driving in snow & salt, and sub-zero temperatures. It would be mostly sunny days & the occasional rainy day. I could drive the bike to work in summer and the car in winter! I could make a huge impact on my gas bill (hoping my electric bill doesn’t spike too much) and make a personal contribution towards decreasing green house gasses! I love you too Mother Nature!! The upper echelon of this market has two companies, Moto Czysz (http://www. motoczysz.com/) and Mission Motors (http://www.ridemission.com/). Although Moto Czysz is working on a consumer iteration of their proprietary technology that’s due out soon, Mission Motors have a bike called the “Mission One”. It’s cool, but the price tag is around $80,000. Maybe Jay Leno will buy one. For the rest of us in “Steerage Class”, there’s Zero Motorcycles (http://www.zeromotorcycles.com/), and Brammo (http:// www.brammo.com/). For me, I was really interested in the new Brammo Empulse. For $13,995 U.S. you get a cool looking bike that looks like a motorcycle, with real world hardware and is capable of reaching 160kph and gets 220klm’s to the tank, theoretically speaking. When you have the time take a look for yourself. I’m sure that soon, every motorcycle manufacturer will bring out their own versions of ‘E-Bikes’ and we will have numerous choices. Harley, if you are reading this, here’s another gift from Mr. Marc Frantz, take a V-Rod and build us an “E-ROD” using Mission’s Advanced Electric Drive Systems. I just coined this model name ‘E-Rod’ and it sounds cool. Let’s see what happens next! If they do come up with the ‘E-Rod’, you read it here first folks in the Motorcycle Times, from me.

Ducati GP11’s New Look
Wednesday 12 Jan. 2011: Wrooom Press Ski Meeting, Madonna di Campiglio (Trento, Italy): The spectacular scenery of the Trento Dolomites served as the background for the first official photos of the Desmosedici GP11 in its new livery. “The 2011 season opens a sort of third phase for our MotoGP project,” Claudio Domenicali, General Director of Ducati Motor Holding began after saluting the audience. “The first was with Loris Capirossi, who in just six races took the Desmosedici to its first win. The second brought the world championship crown, thanks to Casey Stoner, in 2007. The big news for 2011, which opens a third phase, is the arrival of Valentino Rossi on the team. It’s an important phase for our company, which relies a lot on research and development, and which uses the MotoGP series not only as a venue for winning, but also as a laboratory for advanced research. Valentino is universally recognized as a master at taking a bike to its limits, but also at providing feedback that’s extremely useful for development. We think this skill will give us a big push for improving our engineering, and to always give our fans the best bikes possible. Filippo’s work with both of our rid-
ers will be even more evident, and we’re certain that the possibility of also having Valentino test our new models and give us his impressions will make this flow of technology even more effective.” “The thing that struck me the most about Vale,” said Preziosi, General Director of Ducati Corse in response to the first question, “ is his great ability to create a positive climate around himself. On the other hand, one thing that I’d heard about him but that I found to be even more true than I expected was his ability to analyze details in the bike’s behavior and to describe them in an incredibly precise way. It’s very valuable because the rider is gives us considerable information that we wouldn’t otherwise have. The quality of this information will make a big difference.” Moving on to the topic of the GP11, the Ducati engineer explained the principal changes for the new season. “The bike we see here at Madonna di Campiglio is the GP11 ‘step 0,’ as it represents the initial level from which we plan to evolve. The principal characteristics are the evolution of the motor and of the throttle body thought to obtain, fundamentally, a flatter and more useable power curve. As for the chassis, the aero-
dynamics are completely new, with the goal of improving top speed, reducing consumption, and also reducing front lift as much as possible. Other aspects we’re working on for the Malaysia tests in February are the new frame, which has already undergone various tests of rigidity and flex—for torsion and under braking—a swingarm with different rigidity characteristics, and a fork that combines the 2011 hydraulics with the 42mm tubes, instead of 48. As for the electronics, we’re working on wheelie control and traction control. These are all solutions that we’ll try out next week at Jerez with three days of testing and two development teams—one for Franco Battaini and one for Vittoriano Guareschi—and that Valentino and Nicky will then try in Malaysia. We know that Valentino isn’t at 100%, and Sepang is a very ‘physical’ track, so we’ll try to optimize his sessions and to use his time on the track in a ‘surgical’ way in order to have his feedback. Many tests will also be entrusted to Nicky Hayden, who will be able to ride normally. We’re working hard, but the atmosphere at Ducati is really nice, very electric and positive, and we can’t wait to get back on the track.”
2011 Monster Energy MX Nationals Series Schedule Announced. The Wastelands in Nanaimo, British Columbia returns to CMRC’s nine round, coast to coast national motocross series. The Vancouver Island MX Association, which includes clubs from Victoria, Nanaimo, Pt. Alberni and Campbell River, will spearhead the organization and logistics surrounding the national to ensure the event and track will meet national calibre standards. “We are very pleased to return to the Island after a two year layoff, as The Wastelands were a part of the series for thirteen years. Having the VIMX behind the event makes me very confident the event will be executed in the most professional manner as it was in the late ‘90s”, stated CMRC President Mark Stallybrass. “We are currently trying to make arrangements to make the transportation from the Mainland to the Island much more affordable, which will make the event much more attractive to participants, teams and enthusiasts”. A change has been made to the series schedule; there will be a weekend off between Sand Del Lee and the final round in Walton. The final round of the Monster Energy MX Nationals in Walton, Ontario has traditionally been held on the third Sunday of August, and to keep consistent with the dates of the remaining eastern Canadian rounds of the series, no choice was left but to make this adjustment with the schedule.

2011 CMRC Women’s National Championships The Women’s Nationals will continue to have an East/West format with three rounds in the west and three in the east. Separate Eastern and Western Canadian Women’s National Championship titles will be awarded. The cost savings with this format proved to work best for the participants as the number of entries increased dramatically in 2010. Each round of the series will be included with the Pro Nationals on each respective Sunday.

LINDSAY THOMSON Contributing Writer, TMT
Tolerant, empathetic, understanding? Tolerant, empathetic, understanding? That’s how we Canadians like to see ourselves, right? We believe that everyone has the right to self-fulfilment. We live in the enlightened twenty-first century and we have open minds for any new ideas, don’t we? We pride ourselves on being negotiators and peace keepers. Sure... Then why the hell are so many people so easily pissed off? I cannot believe how easy it is to aggravate some readers. We’ve had a run on this stuff lately and it got me thinking; what is it that makes people so easily offended? A while back, I wrote a column about some V-Twin rider with open pipes. I sarcastically titled it, “Loud Pipes Save Lives.” The gist of the story was that that very statement is routinely and clinically proven wrong. For some, opposing opinions are just not allowed. As soon as it hit the streets, we had a furiously, almost illiterate email from an accessory shop owner, threatening to pull advertising (He doesn’t advertise with us), tell all his friends to stop reading and calling me various and repetitive “affectionate” names. I have no problem with disagreement, but why make it so personal? If he went to a restaurant with a friend and ordered steak, does the friendship end if the friend wants fish? Ironically, within days of this email, another landed in my box. This one was from a gentleman in Saskatchewan. He was again, writing about the same article and, as I read, thought “wow, this guy agrees with what I wrote.” Until I realized that he was angry. Turns out he was under the impression that the only part worth reading, WAS the headline. He launched into me about how stupid that sentence was and that his Gold Wing never offended anyone. He was even so sure of himself, that he made a point of sending his e-mail and his home address. Funny thing; when I pointed out his mistake, and the fact that
he could not possibly have read any part of the column, he was not willing to apologize for the verbal abuse. As a matter of fact, he never even replied. Hmmm. It’s good to know, I suppose, that I’m not the only one. My favourite part of the magazine is the “Skid Marks” page. Cute and funny slice of life pictures and comments always give me a chuckle. A past issue had a photo of a number of young ladies on bicycles, all but one wearing thongs. The one lady had forgotten her thong. Now I might have wondered if the angle of the photo was from any point but behind. There was nothing in that shot that you don’t see on TV, beaches and at Daytona, but someone just couldn’t miss a chance to complain. This time it was editor, Tim who got the friendly greeting. Even did the usual threat to read another publication. Just to point out the obvious: Every one of us reads other publications. The very best came in about the same issue, it was aimed at something I wrote. A reader found my dislike of golf to be a problem. You know, I HAVE tried golf. I have even taken lessons to understand the game and, perhaps, appreciate the challenge of playing it well. Turns out, that even now being capable of playing golf, I still find the game boring. Unlike others, I have no issue with others enjoying it. I just choose to use my time in a much more enjoyable way. There is, of course, one curiosity that I do have about the last complaint: I am sure that John McBride is a nice person. I just don’t understand for the life of me, why I should care that HE plays golf. Think about this: if everything that you read, hear, or see agrees with one person’s view, we would still be wandering the deserts. We would have no personal choices. You don’t agree? Open your mind and be glad we live lives where differences in opinion don’t get you put in prison.

Brett “The Kid” McCormick returns to Canadian Superbike with BMW. McCormick signs with the BMW Motorrad Canada Superbike Team for 2011. Richmond Hill, ON (December 20, 2010) - BMW Motorrad Canada is delighted to announce that Brett McCormick will be suiting up along side Michael Ferreira for the 2011 Canadian superbike season as part of the BMW Motorrad Canada Superbike Team. Brett will be returning to race in the Parts Canada Superbike Championship after competing for the 2010 season in the United States with the Michael Jordan Motorsport Team. The 19-year old superbike sensation from Saskatoon brings with him a wealth of racing experience for such a young rider, including almost 5 years of racing superbikes at an elite level. “Adding a huge talent such as Brett to our superbike team is a great coup for BMW Motorrad Canada” says Norm Wells, Director. “Brett is well liked and respected in the racing world and his track record speaks for itself. He will be a tremendous asset to our team.” 2011 will be the second full season that BMW Motorrad Canada fields a two rider superbike team in the Parts Canada Superbike Championship. The team will once again be racing the potent S1000RR superbike that enjoyed a successful debut in Canada this past year. Michael Ferreira, a superbike rookie in 2010, will continue with the BMW team in 2011 after a very impressive season that saw him improve with every ride and cap off his season with two third place podiums at the final rounds. The last time McCormick raced in Canada was back in 2009 where he won 4 of 7 Superbike races along with setting lap records at every track in Canada that season. Remarkably, all of these records still stand today. 2011 will not be the first time that McCormick will ride an S1000RR Superbike. He was a surprise tester at the annual press tests just after the final round of the 2009 Superbike World Championship held in Portimao where McCormick was lucky enough to test the S1000RR of Troy Corser wearing borrowed riding gear of then BMW Motorrad factory rider Ruben Xaus. “I’m very pleased and obviously excited to join the BMW Motorrad family in 2011”, says McCormick. “BMW is a great company with a history of excellence and I’m looking forward to helping the team make major inroads in the 2011 superbike season. I’ve had the privilege of sampling the S1000RR in WSBK trim, so I know with the superb team we have in Canada we’ll be able to put on a great show and hopefully bring a Superbike Championship to BMW.”

TheWorld isYour Oyster Happy New Year!!! 2011 is here with January and February being the perfect time to start planning your next adventure. I can feel my body start to vibrate at the thought of “where to go this year?” And there are so many options to choose from. For all of you adventure riders, here are just some of the things that are out there - companies that I have traveled with are Edelweiss and Compass Expeditions who offer 7, 14, 21 and longer rides through the Alps in Europe, Rome to Sicily (both trips I highly recommend) as well as Patagonia trips that ride Argentina, Peru and Chile. Edelweiss is offering a “global ride” that touches six continents and twenty-seven countries. For those not having ten months available for riding, sections of this ride might fit your schedule and budget. Globeriders also offers tours of a similar nature that include Indochina, Vietnam, Phillipines, Japan, South Africa and North America. Some local motorcycle tour companies are: Trillium Motorcycle Tours which offers getaways, overnight and day trips. All of which, can be customized to your riding desire. Finally, if there is anyone that wants to go riding with the Pro himself, you may want to consider MotoAdventures for the 16 day South Africa Tour for the ride of a lifetime from Cape Town to Victoria Falls with Charley Boorman. Can you imagine sitting
by the fire having a beverage while listening to the itinerary of destinations that Charley has covered and the stories that he has to tell? It’s mindblowing to me, so perhaps this might be a trip that I consider; however after last year’s “Around The World” trip, my budget just might tell me differently. Perhaps I’ll design my own trip that might take me throughout Ontario’s many spectacular hideaways since Canada is one of the most beautiful countries in the world to explore. Just know these are only a few of the many companies available and whether you consider an organized trip or self planned ride, the “world is your oyster”. I googled the meaning and it’s defined: “If the world is your oyster, you have the ability and the freedom to do anything or go anywhere. You’re young and healthy and you’ve got no commitments, so the world is your oyster.” Now, let’s face it we all have commitments but for me, two weeks out of the year is my vacation time. And what better way than to spend it on two wheels travelling to destinations that one only dreams of. For two weeks I want to get lost in not just any adventure but “MY EPIC ADVENTURE”. Cheers to “The Power of Dreams!” and get the maps out to start charting your course that will make your heart sing.

Safety Scene by SCOTT MACDONALD Contributing Writer TMT
Should Have Identified Trouble During the many miles both novice and seasoned riders will tally up over their riding careers a large percentage will be subjected to the inexperience of new drivers and the forgetfulness of those in their golden years. Actually I shouldn’t just blame the young or the old, most drivers who get behind the wheel of their cars seem to toss every driving skill they have ever learned out the window in favor of texting, putting their makeup on or scolding their children in the backseat while trying to manoeuvre through traffic. It may be just a sign of these times with convenient gadgets like the iphone and ever popular Blackberries or maybe not. Could it be we all just take driving for granted just a little bit too much when we think no one is looking. Take away the cage and all of a sudden the traffic around seems to matter. Funny how that works eh? For all of us riding in urban areas it is more important than ever to make sure we pay attention to our surrounding and always expect the unexpected. The most important skill as a new or seasoned rider we can work on is our looking skills. Sure, you think your skills are just fine? Next time you take to the road, 4 wheeled or two, try this little exercise. As you get up to speed, begin to verbalize every thing you see, traffic signs, children, broken yellow line or single line in the middle of the road, any lights? what colour, see any people, are they walking dogs, any cars parked on the side of the road? See any trees, have you noticed what colour the leaves are? What about intersections? Is there anything on the road approaching the intersection or are they moving away, have you checked your
mirrors or turned your head to make a lane change, what is the posted speed, did you notice any school crossings? Did you check your speed, are you speeding? We are expected to process so much information you’ll quickly realize just how much you are or are not really seeing when you do this exercise, especially with a friend in the passenger seat. So take that information from this little exercise and expect the same or less from most other drivers you share the road with. When I first took the motorcycle safety course, one instructor stood out more than the rest, he was genuinely interested in saving my life or making sure I didn’t make bad decisions. He took riding seriously and expected his students to do the same. One unforgettable acronym he passed on to us was S.H.I.T - Should Have Identified Trouble. As humourous as this may be, it’s deep rooted origin is in the looking skills I mentioned earlier. Keeping your eyes up allows you to use your peripheral vision to see road markings ahead of you, it allows you to see a broad radius of vision of almost 180 degrees. When used in combination with shoulder checks your range of vision should be close to 360 degrees. By practicing your looking skills two things begin to happen to you as a rider, first you start to actually see more on the road, hazards and escape routes and you’ll will also realize that what you were not seeing could have killed you. It only takes a split second to get into trouble but good skills and training will allow you to avoid trouble spots in the first place.
Learn from the experts and live to ride another day.
