INDUSTRY NEWS

Victory Ending Production

Polaris Industries Inc. announced it will immediately begin winding down its Victory Motorcycles brand and related operations. Polaris will assist dealers in liquidating existing inventories while continuing to supply parts for a period of 10 years, along with providing service and warranty coverage to Victory dealers and owners. This was an incredibly difficult decision. Over the past 18 years, we have invested not only resources, but our hearts and souls, into forging the Victory Motorcycles brand, and we are exceptionally proud of what our team has accomplished. The experience, knowledge, infrastructure and capability we’ve built gave us the confidence to acquire and develop the Indian Motorcycle brand. I would like to express my gratitude to everyone associated with Victory Motorcycles and celebrate your many contributions. AROUND THE WORLD

The latest additions to the Bonneville family have finally been unveiled. Earlier, this past week, Triumph stopped in Hamilton at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum, as part of their nationwide tour to introduce motorcycle enthusiasts to the all-new Street Scrambler and their premium custom

Bonneville Bobber. The Bobber--which really most were in attendance to see unveiled, was born into an unparalleled bloodline of Triumph customs that stretch all the way back to the 1940’s. It perfectly encapsulates the minimalist styling principles, muscular stance and purposeful engineering attitude of a genuine bobber. For decades riders from all walks of life have tinkered with

their motorcycles. And while some have preferred to add numerous goodies and accessories like windshields, saddlebags and chrome trinkets--some have gone the opposite direction with stripping them down, removing unnecessary accessories and running a bare bones, light weight urban ride called a bobber. The Midsize Come Back Well here we are once again, its the beginning of February, its cold and I’m miserable, not because its cold out or that its February, I have caught a nasty bug and my nose wont stop running, my eyelids are sore and my fingernails ache and all I have been thinking about for the past few months is getting back on two wheels. What’s worse, is a buddy of mine keeps trying to coax me to take out the bike anytime the temperature peaks above zero. As much as I want to go for a ride, I need to see double digits in the forecast before I can even think about pulling the bike out of the garage. I am a self-confessed fair weather rider. I am not ashamed to admit it. I got into motorcycling because I want to enjoy the ride, the sights, the sounds, the smells, you know what I am talking about. Having said that, there still is much to keep me occupied throughout the season that I like to refer to as “the bad months”. There are motorcycle shows that will help keep my mind off shovelling, motorcycle repairs I have been putting off doing and sorting through all the news coming down the pike about what’s new in motorcycling for 2017. From the seemingly endless press releas-

es from manufacturers around the world, a few things have caught my eye that seem to be trends for this upcoming year. Midsize displacement bikes are the focus in 2017. Manufacturers in general believe that the midsize market with their midsize price tags are the way to go. I have to agree with that belief, with economies on both sides of the border still shaky, big ticket bikes will be hard to move from the showroom floor as buyers look for affordability and economy. For 2017, Yamaha is introducing the SCR 950, a retro styled motorcycle based loosely on the Bolt, it looks like something right out of the 1970’s. Key styling cues include cool retro inspired paint, lace wheels, and an old school number plate. With over 900cc’s this head turner will not only make for a fun weekend toy, but should prove to be an excellent daily rider. Triumph is also hoping it’s midsize displacement line will be the way to go for 2017. The new Street Cup, based on the Bonneville is a recreation of a classic cafe racer yet it’s as modern as they come with throttle by wire and ABS. Kawasaki is also looking at the midsize displacements as the answer for 2017, but odd-

ly, they have also decided to introduce an ultra affordable, ultralight and ultracompact 125cc option. The Z125 PRO weighing in at just 225 lbs has a sporty appearance and a low seat height perfect for blasting around town. But it does have it’s limits, if you plan to take to the highway, this is not the bike for that. In contrast to the midsize options I have mentioned, Harley-Davidson is bringing back their Road Glide but with some added punch. This new Glide comes with not only a restyled fairing, but generates about 10% more torque from the new 107cu in Milwaukee Eight V-twin. In addition to the power upgrade, the new Road Glide incorporates a redesigned suspension for better ride options and handling. And if that weren’t enough, there is still a growing trend for the green option of the electric motorcycle. If that’s your thing, there are more options than ever before with major manufacturers pledging to bring out their own electric, but in the meantime, Zero has a wide variety of models to choose from to fit your list of needs and wants. Remember it’s not what you ride, it’s that you ride.

Honda recalls a total of 882 Goldwing motorcycles.

American Honda Motor Co. is recalling a total of 882 Goldwing motorcycles. Included are model year 2006-2009 and 2012 Honda GL1800 (Goldwing) motorcycles originally sold, or ever registered, in Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan), and the U.S. Virgin Islands, or “Zone A.” Additionally, if not included in “Zone A,” Honda is recalling certain 2006-2009 Honda GL1800 (Goldwing) motorcycles originally sold, or ever registered, in Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia, or “Zone B.” Additionally, if not included in Zone A or Zone B above, Honda is recalling certain 2006-2008 Honda GL1800 (Goldwing) motorcycles originally sold, or ever registered, in the states of Alaska, Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. These vehicles are equipped with airbag inflators assembled as part of the air bag modules used as original equipment or replacement equipment. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the front airbags, these inflators may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling. An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the operator resulting in serious injury or death. Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the air bag module, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin January 24, 2017. Owners may contact Honda Motorcycle Customer Support at 1-866784-1870. Honda’s number for this recall is KE5.

EBR Motorcycles to Wind Down Production EBR Motorcycles, LLC located in East Troy, Wisconsin will begin a wind down of production operations commencing next week. EBR will continue to honor warranties and provide technical and parts support to current dealers and riders who bought motorcycles manufactured by EBR. EBR will continue to review strategic alternatives with interested investors regarding production operations. The decision was a tough one for EBR as it has been solely focused on the growth and building EBR for success. The team at EBR has worked tirelessly making every effort to build the company. There is no fault on any of the team at EBR for this decision. They and their families have our deepest grati-

tude for their efforts and dedication to EBR. This difficult decision was based primarily on EBR facing significant headwinds with signing new dealers, which is key to sales and growth for a new company. In addition, EBR has had limited production in 2016 and 2017 that was under goal. The combination of slow sales and industry announcements of other major OEM brands closing or cutting production only magnified the challenges faced by EBR. The limited production of remaining 2017 and 2016 EBR motorcycles are currently available from EBR’s top dealers. For a list of top dealers, please go to www.EBR.com. A sale of production equipment and excess parts will start in March.

Trade Dispute Over Beef Has U.S. Government Proposing 100% Tariff On European Motorcycles

A trade dispute over American beef has the U.S. government proposing a 100% or higher tariff on selected European motorcycles. Image courtesy of American Motorcyclist Association (AMA). What’s the beef with motorcycles? U.S. trade official seeks 100 percent tariff on some European bikes As part of a trade battle over hormones in U.S. beef, a federal agency is trying to tack a 100 percent or higher tariff on motorcycles made in Europe. The Office of United States Trade Representative requested comments on Dec. 28 regarding its proposal to include tariffs on motorcycles with an engine size between 51cc and 500cc imported from the European Union. The American Motorcyclist Association opposes the proposed tariff, because trade disputes residing within the boundaries of the agricultural industry should not be solved with trade sanctions levied against non-agricultural products. “There is no logical link between motorcycles and beef,” said Wayne Allard, AMA vice president of government relations. “It is absurd to even consider such a move.” The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative is responsible for developing and coordinating U.S. international trade, commodity and direct investment policy and overseeing negotiations with other countries. The head of USTR is the U.S. Trade

Representative, a Cabinet member who serves as the president’s principal trade adviser, negotiator, and spokesperson on trade issues. If the agency enacts this motorcycle tariff, serious and potentially irreversible harm will be done to American small- and medium-sized business owners selling the vehicles and to American families who buy these motorcycles for commuting and outdoor recreation. “Should the availability of motorcycles be hindered by these unjustified trade sanctions, dealerships may close, leaving countless Americans without jobs,” Allard said. “The negative effects of the proposed sanctions will not only harm the motorcycle sales industry, but will spread through the aftermarket equipment sector, recreation equipment sales, the sports entertainment industry and further down the line.” Affected manufacturers include Aprilla, Beta. BMW, Ducati, Fantic, Gas Gas, Husqvarna, KTM, Montesa, Piaggio, Scorpa, Sherco, TM Vespa. The same agency tried the same tactic in 2008, but the effort was thwarted when the AMA, the Motorcycle Industry Council and bike manufacturers and retailers rallied motorcyclists against the plan. At that time, the U.S. Trade Representative instead raised the tariff on a variety of European food products.

Tesla founders backed Alta Motors unveils new electric motorcycle

While not as popular as Zero Motorcycle, Alta Motors is an up-and-coming electric motorcycle manufacturer and it unveiled a new version of its flagship Redshift last week that could broaden their market. Alta’s Redshift was only offered as an allelectric supermoto/motocross, but the latest version of the motorcycle is a new street tracker: Redshift ST. Alta Motors, formerly known as BRD Motorcycles, is small electric motorcycle startup based in Silicon Valley that managed to raise over $17 million in funding, including from Tesla co-founders Marc Tarpenning and Martin Eberhard in a $4.5 million Series A round 2 years ago. The company started production of the first two versions of the Redshift in August. There’s the Redshift SM, which is the streetlegal version, and there’s the Redshift MX, which is the supermoto version as well. There are different features that make a street tracker but in short, it’s a dirt track racer made street legal. It features a new lowered subframe and seat with, of course, flat track wheels. Unfortunately, they haven’t released many specifications of the new bike. It will likely have similar features as the other Redshifts. Alta’s other street-legal Redshift, the SM, is only equipped with a 5.8 kWh battery pack for about 50 miles of range. Hopefully, this new version will introduce a longer range option if it makes it to production. The company is bringing it to the One Moto Show in Portland, Oregon, and we should know more about the street tracker in the coming months.

And now we begin our other season, the non-motorcycle cold dream state we Canadians seem to be so proud of. I get it, really I do. I once lived to ski but we both know where it’s really at, right? Two wheels on a summer morning, not a frozen snot face as you shovel snow endlessly wondering if the spots in front of your eyes signal the end. I do concede snow machines and spiked up ice racers but dementia is cause for concern, so go get some help for that. It’s our time to think about past rides and plan future adventures. Time to remember things that will help us along our way and many of those memories are unpleasant, these are the important ones. Close calls, accidents and demonstrations of idiot people doing insane things or sometimes simply pure evil. Everything from the discomfort of not enough layers on a cool morning to the soul piercing fright of a system crash. I’m going to depart from two wheels into my other world where I roll on 18 on up to 30 wheels and can tip the scales at 63,500 kg. Previously I’ve told how we as operators of anything mobile must train our minds to see the dangers and constantly update our escape plans. Well one summer morning as I was learning the tricks to keep focused, to keep my tired eyes open and my worn out brain working the monster jumped in front of my truck and in an instant I became a murderer. Moonbeam Ontario is a small far northern town along the TransCanada and like many the route doubles as main street where the speed limit drops from 80 to 50 kph but rarely does anyone, including truckers ever slow down enough. Letting the engine brake drag my 46,000 kg transport through the posted limit I watched a small group of youngsters on the left sidewalk as they rough housed each other, laughing and squealing as they will. As I rolled closer their ears caught something and as a group they looked across the highway. So many threats already with only one possible escape plan, the brakes and looking right I instantly knew it was time to escape. Training took over and my feet covered the clutch and brake pedals as I realized one of the advancing kids had roller blades on. Caught up in his interest of friends beckoning him over, that little boy put his head down and began skating unsteadily for all he was worth. He was going across the street to see his buddies except I was going to kill him before he got there. Feet already prepared my reaction was fast, stabbing both to the floorboards as hard as I could. With my heart in my throat I tried to will that still moving Peterbilt 379 to a stop. Finally he saw me but I knew it was too late. Impossible to stop he fell trying to back pedal and as that inno-

cent 10 year old boy, feet and arms flailing uselessly in the air disappeared in front of that trucks extended hood, I screamed. Stopping in the same instant I jumped out as horrible thoughts filled me. The front and no kid ! Oh my god, he’s underneath. Beyond frantic I leapt to the passenger side wheel well where a high pitched keening greeted me. He’s alive ! I almost break as I see the steer tire resting against his mid section. A few more inches, a speed of 55 instead of 45, a driver that didn’t practise properly. Any one of the countless bad things we see everyday on the roads and that little boy would be dead, his insides spread on the asphalt. That would have been the end for me. Honestly, I don’t think I could of dealt. That was twenty five years ago and today I still see the absolute horror in that kids eyes as he found mine, the eyes of his killer just before he vanished beneath my truck. To be so young and understand that death was upon you, that is my psyche scar. I keep it close to the surface and raw, the understanding of death in the terror filled eyes of a boy. Helping me to remain vigilant this and so many other experiences mold me into who I am and how I approach something so drastic and possibly life altering as motorcycling. You and I have thought about some mighty serious things since I started my journey here at The Motorcycle Times. By sharing my own memories and lessons learned, which is all one really has, I’ve hoped to stir your mind and let you discover what is held inside. Maybe it was that left turning car in your path or a deer at night. Was it speed and inexperience ? Wet leaves on a grey afternoon grips a dark corner of more then one of your souls. Did you scar your mind ?, or worse. Maybe like so many of us a much deeper wound lurks inside. A husband and father gone without a goodbye or a daughter broken and afraid who whispers the last words she ever will from a cold ditch. It’s these ones that we need to keep fresh because they remind us how fragile and small we are, how easily we break. The power we wield over the lives that surround us is a grave responsibility and those lives demand our dedication to learning, in real time or from the past. We owe it to them. It’s minus 40 tonight and my two wheeled lover waits patiently as I sift through reams of memories letting vivid ones lead me deeper to the almost forgotten. Tonight think of your loved ones. Think of your life, of the lessons you may need to learn. Your two wheeled fantastical escape craft waits for you but remember, in an instant of inattention it can destroy.

Land Speed Record bob cameron

CONTRIBUTING WRITER

The tale of the 1907 Curtiss V8, the only motorcycle ever to hold the outright land speed record Despite all you read about early car speed records, trains actually held the land speed record until 1907. That all changed when Glen Curtiss built and rode a V8 motorcycle to a land speed record of 136 mph. Within a decade he would become the Henry Ford of the aerospace industry, but his motorcycle record of 1907 was not bested until 1930. It was the only motorcycle to ever hold the outright land speed record and, because the train records were powered initially by steam and then by electricity, used the first internal combustion engine to hold the record. In automotive terms it is the equivalent of the Antikythera mechanism and always seems to slip through the cracks when books are written about speed records, because they are usually only consider cars. This context is relevant to the story of Glen Curtiss, because across the history of the highly contested endeavor of going faster than anyone ever has before, Curtiss left an indelible mark – yet it was only ever a sideline business for him. Curtiss’ subsequent role in the history of aviation overshadows some

of his most remarkable achievements along his path to greatness. He was one of the great aviation pioneers and is generally regarded as the father of naval aviation through his work with sea planes. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross as a civilian and the Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company became the largest aircraft manufacturer in the world during World War I, producing 10,000 aircraft during the war, with Curtiss both Chairman and President. When it floated in 1916, it employed 21,000 people. In 1929, Curtiss-Wright was formed by the merger of companies founded by Glenn Curtiss and the Wright brothers. As an aviator Curtiss was so significant he made the cover of Time magazine, but he was primarily an ingenious engineer, and his initial main business was the manufacture of high-power, lightweight engines for a range of purposes, as can be seen from the advertisement below. He produced motorcycle and airplane engines, and manufactured motorcycles under his own brand, and realized that the low weight and minimal frontal area of the motorcycle offered an easy way to demonstrate his wares to the public and sell more of his engines. This is where his self-belief really begins to raise him above the rest of

the greats. He not only designed engine, motorcycles and aeroplanes, he was also the test pilot, and he was also in the saddle of the motorcycles which set land speed records in 1903 and 1907. In 1903 he was timed at Yonkers (New York) riding his own Curtiss Hercules 1000cc v-twin at 64 mph (103 km/h), earning him a place in history as the first motorcycle speed record holder. That’s Curtiss on the speed record bike above, complete with twin pointy gas tanks, and that’s a 1906 Curtiss 1000cc v-twin below, earlier models of which would have formed the basis of the record breaker. To put this achievement in perspective, it’s worth noting that the record breaking bike was built a decade prior to the Harley-Davidson v-twin going into series production. There’s some nice pics of the road bikes upon which the initial record breaker was based in the image library for this story, and if you head on over to the Vintagent, you’ll see a pic of Curtiss’ radial three-cylinder motorcycle – quite a treat. As his engines grew more powerful and reliable, Curtiss wished to prove their worth as a lightweight power unit via the media, so he installed one of his 4000cc V8 aircraft engines (essentially four of his v-twins on a common crank), into a motorcycle and

blew all competitors into the weeds with a run of 136.27 mph (219.31 km/h) on 24 January 1907 during the premier speed event in the world at that time, Speed Week in Ormond/ Daytona Beach, Florida. Those are the first two data points on the graph above, showing the progress of the motorcycle speed record from 1906 onwards. You can see Curtiss was decades ahead of his time. Indeed, so powerful and fast was the Curtiss V8 that it took another 23 years before it was beaten in 1930 by Joseph Wright’s OEC Temple JAP at 137.23 mph (220.99 km/h). Within weeks, BMW rested the crown with a run by Ernst Henne of 137.74 mph (221.67 km/h) and the combined forces of BMW saw Henne better the record every year until 1937. But that was a quarter century after a world war had catalyzed technological development in every facet of aerodynamics and engine development. The wind-tunnel streamlining evident on Henne’s BMW and BMW’s mastery of supercharging engines had changed the game. Take a moment to compare the motorcycles in the two images – from a leather flying helmet to an aerodynamic helmet, Curtiss’ run of 136 mph in January 1907 defied the laws of physics CONTINUED TO PG.13

The Tap 150 Arguably one of the most recognizable and long lived tiny bikes is the Vespa. Born in the ashes of WWII and birthed from a company that produced Italian bomber planes, Piaggio. If you’re familiar with mopeds, you’ll recognize the company name but everyone else will recognize the iconic step through scooter with a platform for the rider’s feet. Picture a dude in a slick suit, leather shoes, driving a vespa through a roundabout with some vino and pasta in his bag, I can’t imagine anyone is going to say this guy is from Wyoming. Vespa is an Italian icon and an impressive little machine with a rich history. The company that makes Vespa started in 1884. Piaggio originally manufactured railway carriages, then shifted it’s focus during both world wars to the production of aircrafts, before finally setting out to design and produce a cost effective form of transportation for post war Italy. The design was meant to be slick, clean and compact. The first production model was a 98cc two stroke engine that was directly attached to the rear wheel, eliminating the need for a drive chain and the grease and oil that came along with it. The engine was encased in the frame and hidden from outside dirt and dust, it also gave the Vespa a slick looking exterior, different from other motorcycles. This also freed up the center of the scooter for the rider’s feet and gave it an iconic look that hasn’t changed much to this day. The name of the scooter comes from the Italian word for wasp. With it’s large backside, connected by a narrow waist and handlebars that could pass as antenna, the owner reportedly named the scooter on the spot when he first saw it. The base model scooter sports a single suspension on both front and rear wheels and three speed transmission. Earlier models didn’t need a battery and simply relied on their magneto-flywheel combinations for electricity, but with some models sporting options like radios, electronic dashboards, horns and electric start, a battery has become pretty common on Vespas. For classification purposes Vespas are legally considered motorcycles in North America and as such require the same safety and licensing procedures as other bikes. Here in Ontario you could just get a limited speed motorcycle license, but with the same wait time and cost as getting a full M, I can’t see why one wouldn’t just get your M license.

But don’t let the small size and colourful marketing fool you, the Vespas knows how to play with the big boys. Vespa’s speed records have been set at around the 100MPH mark and they’ve been a part of drag racing circles for decades. The versatility of the Vespa is also impressive, finding use as a daily drive, rugged workhorse that can haul heavy loads and up to 5 people at a time, and as an anti-armour vehicle That’s right, the humble Vespa was re-designed in the 1950’s and put into a bid for a contract with the French military, who were ready to drop their american made Cushman scooters. Vespa won the bid and was commissioned by the French military for paratrooper use. The Vespa 150 TAP was fitted with an M20 75mm anti-tank cannon, reinforced frame and an engine boost to 148cc. The 150 TAP was designed to be dropped into conflict zones along with the p a r a t ro o p ers, instead of using heavier and bigger motorcycles. It had a top speed of 64KM/h, which was only a hair slower than NATO military bikes at the time and sported higher reliability due to the enclosed engine and direct drive engine. It was lighter, cheaper, more maneuverable and had better fuel economy than any of the military bikes used at the time. To shoot the M20 the scooter needed to be stationary and there would need to be a second scooter trailing along to carry additional ammunition, but it was ideal for close quarter warfare. The scooter was also silly cheap and went for about $500 US at the time. The production was limited to 500 models however and fortunately never saw live action, but examples of the model can be seen at the Vespa museum in Pontedera Italy. With the versatility and reliability of the Vespa, it’s no wonder that this scooter has lasted as long as it has. The current resurgence in smaller engined bikes has only helped stoke the scooter fire, increasing both sales and price of these little machines over the past few years. Where in the beginning a Vespa was selling for around 55,000 lira (a couple hundred US now), was two stroke, with no forced air cooling or other frivolous accessories, now you’ll be hard pressed to find a working Vespa for under $2000. The newer models will of course come with a wack of now standard frivolous accessories, have forced air cooling, glove boxes and be almost exclusively four stroke, but the feeling of riding one still remain unique and it’s own.

Land Speed Record as much as we understood it back then. Fast trains, circa 1900 More importantly, the automotive industry was still in its infancy, and trains had always been faster than cars and motorcycle until that point, with the world land speed record actually held by an experimental electric trolley car, though automotive circles tend to ignore the record. In 1902, a 23 km section of electric rail infrastructure was created from a military railway by the German Society for the Study of Electrical Rapid Transit, a consortium led by General Electric, Siemens & Halske, the industrial giant Krupp and several major German banks. Located between Marienfelde and Zossen, the test track played host to two competing electric drive systems

for the 50-person trolley cars that were constructed - one railcar was fitted with three-phase AC electrical equipment supplied by AEG and the other with similar equipment supplied by Siemens & Halske. Both vehicles exceeded 124 mph (200 km/h), with the Siemens & Halske railcar setting an initial record of 126 mph (203 km/h) and eventually reaching 128 mph (206 km/h). On 28 October 1903, the AEG railcar was timed at 130.7 mph (210.3 km/h), a new abso-

lute land speed record. Just a few days later, on 5 November, 1903 Arthur Duray pushed the automobile record to 84.73 mph (136.36 km/h) driving a Gobron-Brillie, so cars were clearly still a long way behind railed transport in terms of speed. Numerous records were set in the next few years with the automobile speed record climbing to 121.57 mph (195.65 km/h) on 29 January, 1906 when the famous Stanley Steam Company streamliner set a new

As I have been telling you for the last year, I work on, and enjoy working on old Kawasaki’s. Mainly the Triples that have stolen my heart and, as a result, I have come to know their quirks quite well. Granted, I know of a large number of other guys who know much more than I do but I have finally amassed a goodly amount of knowledge. In order to accomplish some of the stupid stuff I do to these bikes, it has become necessary to collect the proper tools to do the job right. I have spent countless hours with the wrong kind of tools and suffered; broken finger nails, skinned knuckles, and frustrating curse sessions trying to assemble, or more likely take apart, some limited access or difficult to hold part. As they say, the best tool for the job is the right tool. Tools are expensive. I have a habit of taking the weekend paper here in the Sticks where I live and going directly to the Canadian Tire flyer. Who says I don’t have a life? Working on obsolete bikes and reading the Canadian Tire sale flyer on Saturday morning is a complete and fulfilling life choice. I keep telling myself that anyway. There are always sales and specials each week and I will take advantage of them whether I immediately need that specific tool or not. I must admit at this point that I usually have a terrible memory. It could admittedly be that I choose not to listen to people like I should but I never, ever, forget that I could have used a tool that I see on sale and don’t have in my collection. The LSW calls it selective memory. I just call it looking after the important things. If I see it and know that it will come in handy in the future, I try to buy it. Now, many will say that CTC does not have the best tools. But, they of-

fer a lifetime warranty and ask few or no questions when you bring something back for replacement no matter how old it is. These kinds of things are important to me. Needless to say, I will also admit that I am a cheap SOB. The replacement warranty appeals to my thrifty side and so do the sale prices. I did say that I was cheap. Years ago when I rode the Honda 305 Super Hawk and lived at home, we had no tools. My Dad was a wood working hobbyist and had a few Imperial wrenches lying around that I had to use. Granted, I hardly knew enough at that time to be able to tighten a chain let alone do major mechanical work. My Dad had absolutely no mechanical knowledge either. I remember him telling me one time when I had an outboard motor with the cowl off to be careful around the flywheel because the points were there and I could throw off the timing. Not much chance of that but it did put a little fear of the lord in me. Anyway, I just wanted to cast some light on my mechanical heritage, or lack thereof. Back to the subject at hand. Imperial tools were all we had and the “damn Jap bikes” as my Dad called them sported metric fasteners. Back in those days there was little in the way of metric anything so only the bike shops had the proper tools. You could use a 9/16 wrench to fit a 14 mm bolt head and an 11/16 would fit a 17 mm head. Beyond that, it was vice grips and pliers and therefor, a whole bunch of stripped and rounded bolts. Case screws were what we thought were Philips head but actually the Japanese heads were not Philips but had a small flat at the end of the head. I know there is an actual name for these types of screw heads but I still don’t know it. Anyway, the slight difference

A Wrench in the Works

yielded a bunch of rounded and stripped screw heads. Nowadays I try to replace case bolts with allen head stainless screws. When you use a metric allen wrench, it is nearly impossible to strip these. I say nearly impossible but if you try really hard, you are able to do it. Again, I am wandering off topic. When I rode the Honda way back when, I saw that there were grease nipples in various places. I wanted my bike to operate well so I went to the local garage in North Bay. Our family had two cars and we lived a little outside of town so we were well known at that service station. Those were also the days when each gas station served gas and actually pumped it for you as well as each had a mechanic and did work on cars. So, in I go on my motorcycle and politely asked the station owner, Mr. Macdonald if I could borrow his grease gun. I remember that he was always very nice to us when we stopped for gas and again, he was very nice. He nicely informed me that tools were the way he made his living and that they were not for loaning out. It was actually a very informative lecture that he gave me about tools of the trade and all and then he gave me the grease gun and said to go ahead. I did mention before that I knew very little about mechanical things then and I proceeded to load up those grease nipples. I greased them up so much that I had grease deposits on my shoes for years to come. So I did learn two things that day. One was not to ask to borrow tools from a mechanic and the other was not to overdo the grease. I bet that I had the best moving swing arm and brake cable in the area though. Tools are a necessity and an addiction for me. I think that I had told you in a past column that I used to have a wooden boat.

It required tons of maintenance and, of course, special woodworking tools. The LSW, long suffering wife, would always help with the boat. I did give her a Porter Cable disc sander once. I can’t remember if it was a Birthday or anniversary gift. Needless to say, that went over very well. Something like the proverbial lead balloon. Anyway, I have still got lots of wood tools along with my bike tools. They sit in disarray in unused parts of the shop. I will say that the LSW is very proficient and handy with home style maintenance and renovation procedures. I am proud to say that she is very self sufficient. I guess that I also have to admit that it is a necessity for her because I am always hidden in my shop working on bikes. I guess too that I have to admit that I hate that stuff. She shows up at the door to the shop and asks if I have such and such a tool. She usually mentions that she would get it herself if she had a clue where the heck to look in the disaster of organization that houses my non bike tools. It does however bug her that I can usually go directly to a maze of scattered tools and other junk and immediately pull out the tool that she needs. Now here is where we differ. She uses the tool and drops it where she was working and it sits there until I need it or I at least see it and pick it up. I find rusty metal tools lying around all the time. This is perfectly acceptable for wood tools but not so much for mechanical tools that she borrows such as screwdrivers and wrenches. She also loves to invent new uses for tools that I am sure the original tool maker did not have in mind. For the boat I had to have a variety of chisels and had lots of them. I think that I am down to only one now. She, in her wisdom, has found that chisels are great for scraping paint off and opening

paint cans. So, now I find them all over the yard with gouged and broken blades and, because they have been in the yard for extended periods of time, the inevitable rusted blades. Now, again in a previous column, I showed my wall hung tool rack. Every tool has its place and every one is returned to its place after use. I check it after returning them to their places and when I see an empty spot I am forced go looking for my missing baby. I sometimes have left it lying on the shop floor where I was using it but, more often , it has been taken by a certain LSW, used, and left where it was dropped. I then am forced to go looking around the scene of her last project to find the prodigal tool. Yes, I am a little on the OCD side when it comes to tools. This wall of tools is the best way for me to keep track of everything as well as keep it neat. If I only did this with the rest of the shop it would be a far better world, for me anyway. As I said before, I like to have tools in order to be somewhat more self-sufficient. I hate to bug people for help when I could do the task myself. Other people have their own things to do and most don’t appreciate being set upon to help when they have something else more important to themselves to do. Like Mr. Macdonald back at the Texaco station years ago, I have tools to accomplish my own tasks. Unfortunately, the news of my large tool collection has become common knowledge in my neighbourhood. I have one particular neighbour who has no qualms about borrowing tools. They don’t have any contact with motorcycles nor do they read motorcycle publications so I am safe to tell about them. They have owned their cottage for at least 25 years and, for the last 25 years have borrowed a myriad of tools regularly. I mean really, they actually have a place in the snow belt and don’t own a snow shovel. They are not residents but you would think that after all those years, a snow shovel might be at least a consideration. Ladders, drills, skil saws, jig saws, lawn mowers, chain saws, you name it, they borrow it. Now this is all fine and dandy, but weeks and sometimes months later, I have to go and ask for them back. One time last summer we needed to use our, no actually LSW’s chain saw, to cut up a fallen tree but it was locked in the neighbour’s garage. Another time I was up in the boat in the driveway about 10 feet up and obviously was using my ladder. He came over and asked to borrow it. I said that he may have noticed that I was using it at the moment. It is always a bit funny when they arrive at any time of year and we take bets on how long it will take them to show up at the door to ask for the loan of something. Enough of me complaining about my trials and tribulations about being a tool nut. Suffice to say that I like to have them and am not overly enamoured with loaning them out. Maybe some of Mr. Macdonalds’ lecture all those years ago actually rubbed off. So that’s about it on tools. I didn’t want to bore you with what tool actually does what job but it’s more about the need for tools in order to make your life easier. As I said, I have lots of them. I have tools that are still in the box that they came in and have not seen service yet but when I do need them in the future. At this point they are all safely in their places on the wall mainly because the beautiful LSW has not had a home reno project for at least a week. I don’t have to go searching around the house or yard for my tools. They are all in their place and accounted for. Could this be another sickness that I am afflicted with? Oh no, call the Doctor

It’s that time of year: The sight of shiny chrome, smell of fresh tires and the feel of new leather. Yes riders, it’s motorcycle accessory shopping time again. For all us enthusiasts out there, this is the time of year when we have accepted the fact that winter is here to stay for a few more months, and that means warm garages, cold beverages, Skynard on the stereo and tools in hand. Living in Ontario, we only have two seasons: riding season and non-riding season. This is the part of our year when -- if we can’t ride -- many of us do tear downs, clean-ups and buy new stuff for our babies. For those that didn’t get what was on their Santa List, fear not; the vendors of many parts and accessories giants gather in venues with one thing in mind – to bring you the products they think you want. Over the next few months, many motorcycle shows are happening around the province, sporting everything from new and used rides to every accessory imaginable. The Supershow started off the New Year as usual, I managed to walk about, visit with old friends, meet some new ones, networked and SHOPPED. I walked away with some sweet bling too, I might add. Of course, none of the items I bought were on my shopping list, but they were on my ‘wish list’. The things I did go to the show

hoping to purchase were either not available or priced higher than retail (but I won’t beat that horse to death again). It is something worth repeating though: It’s important to do your research before going to shows or even heading to a retailer. You should know the sticker price of an item before you shop, as some vendors actually charge more at trade shows in order to recoup some of their space rental costs. Many parts I saw at the show were 10-20 percent more than in-store or online. The items I did find, however, were things that I wanted, and not necessarily ones that I actually needed. I was barely home with my shiny new stuff before I went to the garage and fired up the space heater. I couldn’t wait to start twisting the wrench. I managed to get some nice new Kuryakyn bling; the thing I like about this company is the install sheets that come with the parts. For those of you who have taken the time to read one, they are thorough and the company keeps it simple. They list all the contents of the package, the instructions are easy to read and understand, there are numbered play-by-play instructions, and they have great tech and customer service if you run into any trouble. I have witnessed firsthand -- when ego gets in the way of common sense -- that not all parts install the same way. Every manufacturer has its own

recommended approach and instructions on how to install their parts. So, my advice is to read the paperwork; it is there for a reason. There have been too many times that I ended up fixing the mistakes of others who couldn’t be bothered to read the install notes because they ‘knew it all’. I personally know shops that add a ‘dumb ass’ service fee for simple and non-complicated re-do’s that could have been avoided if the owner’s ego wasn’t involved. Sometimes it takes more time to fix your mistake than it takes for the shops to conduct the entire repair/install firsthand. If no install instructions are available with your part and you are unsure as to how to go about doing it, conduct a Web search. Some manufacturers and distributors have online tech sheets, install notes or links to videos. Motorcycle forums also have a wealth of knowledge in installation question and answer sections, and I surf them often to assist in diagnosing a problem. Chances are, this has already happened to another rider and there is a quick fix or play-by-play just waiting there for you. If you are putting a chrome cover over a stock part, remember to clean the parts around it, and clean the part off that you may be covering. Two-sided tape and / or silicone won’t adhere to grease. An alcohol swab or brake clean will strip greasy residue and help

assure the part doesn’t end up bouncing off down the highway as you ride. If it’s a bolt-on item, using Blue Loctite is recommended (if nylon nuts or lock washers don’t come in the package). Although Blue is not permanent, only a small dab on the threads is needed to keep your bolts in place. When buying and installing new tires, do-it-yourselfers should first make sure the tires are the recommended size and speed rating for your bike. Thoroughly clean the rim inside once the old rubber is off. Getting rid of flaky rust and dirt will ensure that you are getting a good tight seal on the bead. Make sure the directional arrow on the tire is facing the right way. Always balance a new tire and follow manufacturer recommended pressures. I personally don’t like to mismatch my tires with front and rear ones from different manufacturers, and wouldn’t recommend it to anyone either. When the wheel is off, it’s a good time to check for loose spokes, worn brake pad/shoes and bearings for heat damage or lack of grease. It is also a good idea to clean the rim before re-installing the tire as it’s easier to get to all sections of it. On a final note, when it comes to skin and head protection purchases, it’s important to remember that you get what you pay for.

Like most of us know, riding is generally a solitary activity associated with imagery of lone wolves and desperados driving off into sunsets. Although there are plenty of rider groups that meet up on summer nights in coffee shop parking lots and rip around in a cloud of smoke and thundering engine noise, during the ride you might as well be alone. And so, even in a group, us riders find ourselves alone once again. But for those of us wanting to share the experience a little more intimately, or who are just tired of being the loners on the road, there’s always the option of sharing your ride with a passenger. Although this sounds like the perfect way to share your riding experience with someone it is not an option that should be taken lightly. Riding with a passenger is a huge responsibility and you should be comfortable and prepared for the role before having someone hop on the back. So, with the beginning of riding season almost among us, what better time than now to go over some pointers when sharing your ride with someone else. Before you even think about having a passenger on your bike, you should first ask yourself whether you’re ready for that responsibility. Maybe you’re Evil Kenevil and can jump stacks of busses without a sweat, or maybe you’ve just graduated from an MTO approved safety riding course and you’re eager to show off your new skills, either way you have to be honest with your-

self about your skill level and seriously asses whether you’re up for the challenge of taking on a passenger. A quick legal reminder/disclaimer for riders in Ontario: You must have an M2 before you can carry a passenger. Although the M2 is a nice formality, you should really wait until you’ve gotten your full M before attempting to ride a passenger. Waiting until you have your M gives you both time to get used to your bike and experience with riding in difference conditions. As a passenger, if someone asks you to ride on their bike make sure you trust their riding ability, don’t just take their word for it. Maybe take some time to watch them ride, or if you have mutual friends ask around if the rider you’re going to ride with is a risky choice. Ultimately you need to have trust in the rider, if you don’t feel comfortable with them, DON’T ride. With the obvious riding experience caveat brought to our attention, I’ll go over some more practical tips on driving around with a passenger. First obvious thing after assessing your riding experience is making sure you’ve got safety equipment for the passenger. You can’t expect someone who doesn’t ride a motorcycle to have an extra helmet handy, so it’s your job at the driver to provide one for the passenger. I’m sure there are people who disagree on this, but if they’re on your bike, they’re your guests and you need to provide them with the proper basics of safety equipment. The passenger should be responsible for dressing appropriately, denim

or leather pants and a jacket, boots that are at least ankle length and a layers are a good way to give yourself some safety on the road. Make sure your bike is in good working order, oil leaks could burn your passenger and unique mechanical problems that you might be used to could throw your passenger off balance. In addition to this, make sure that you adjust your suspension for the added load. Check your bike’s suspension recommendations in the manual, it should also give you some guidance in setting it up for a rider. Spend some time making sure your suspension is setup right. With suspension also comes tire pressure, and because you’ll have added weight, make sure your tires are inflated properly for the difference. Low pressure tires can cause skids and loss of control, don’t let that happen with a passenger on board. As a driver you should consider, reflect on and double check all these things before a passenger even shows up with their gear and ready to ride. The passenger doesn’t need to sit around the garage all day while you fix an oil leak, or set your suspension up, and they definitely don’t want to show up with your lacking proper safety equipment or confidence in your ability. If all that is good and taken care of, now you and your passenger can stand in front of your bike and prepare yourselfs for a ride. But before you both jump on and drive off into some iconic sunsets, there are a few more things to go over.

The driver should show the passenger some things about the bike, what parts get hot, where they can put their hands, where the foot pedals are. If you’re a passenger don’t put your feet on the exhaust unless you love melting your boots, and always keep your feet on the pegs, even when stopped. Some drivers might have a preference on what the passenger does when the bike is stopped, but as a rule of thumb: keeping your feet on the bike and not the road is the safest way to make sure the bike or you don’t lose balance. The rider should also discuss how they want the passenger to hold on. Is there a backrest or grab rail? Can they wrap their arms around their waist? Make sure the passenger knows what to do. The passenger should not move too much and restrict their movements to those of the driver, lean when the driver leans, stand still at stops and generally don’t move around too much in the back. The passenger should also follow the LOFO rule, Last On First Off, so that the driver can keep the bike stable and not drop it. Also, if you’re the passenger make sure to warn the driver when you’re getting on and off so that they know to be ready for a change in weight. Before the ride you’ll want to discuss the ride length and some signals that might be important during the ride. You can make up whatever signals you want, but some basic ones for stop and emergency stop should be worked out with either shoulder or thigh taps/ grabs. The driver should also stress to

weight will affect the suspension, the braking, the acceleration, the turning, steering and basically all aspects of the ride. Make sure you understand how differently your bike will act with the added weight. Give yourself plenty of time to start and stop, make sure you’re changing gears smoothly and avoid jerky driving. Stress to the passenger the importance of not moving around a lot and the importance of following the body motions of the driver (lean when they lean, don’t move in opposite directions). The two of you might bump helmets on the ride and the driver should take this as a sign that their braking, accelerating, or gear shifting is too rough, try to smooth these

actions out and don’t blame the passenger for something that is almost entirely in your hands. While on your ride the driver should also make a habit of stopping every once in awhile to check up and see how the passenger is doing. Do they need to go to the bathroom? Is the ride enjoyable or too rough? Do they feel safe at the speed you’ve been going? Are they comfortable or do they want to head back? Those are all good basic questions for a passenger. In the end, the most important things in a double ride are safety and communication. Although these are the responsibility of both parties, the driver should be taking on the bulk of these responsibility to educate the passenger

and ensure that all safety precautions have been considered. A large number of motorcycle accidents are caused by impaired driving, reckless behaviour or fast driving, which luckily is in the hands of the driver to control and prevent. Unfortunately, cars not seeing a motorcycle are also a major cause of accidents, and that is something that is out of the driver’s control in some cases. In both cases the driver should understand the responsibility that they have when they take on a passenger, and the passenger should also accept the real risks associated with being on a motorcycle. In the end, the keys to a fun ride are good communication and proper safety precautions.

the passenger that they shouldn’t be texting while on the bike, they don’t want to fly off the bike because they weren’t holding on to anything. The key before and during the ride is proper communication. It’s hard to hear on a bike, so make sure you both have the same expectations before the ride starts. You don’t want to get stuck on an all day ride when you just expected a ride around the block and as a driver you don’t want your passenger to have an emergency water leak on your seat. sound and ride. Courtesy of the new generation Bonneville HT engine the Bobber delivers category-leading torque for a thrilling hot rod ride and a rich exhaust note. Powered by the critically acclaimed 1200cc high torque engine, as fitted in the Bonneville T120, there is a dedicated ‘Bobber’ tune for more torque and power lower down the rev range. The charismatic 270° firing interval ensures a smooth, linear power delivery from the slick six-speed gearbox. Evolved specifically for the Bobber to maximize the riding character there is a unique twin airbox set up with two filters, unique intake and exhaust system and new output shaft. Delivering the rich new Bobber soundtrack is a beautifully finished brushed stainless steel twin skin exhaust system with ‘slash cut’ sawn off peashooter silencers which is shorter and lighter than the Bonneville T120. Just like all the new generation Bonnevilles, the Bobber engine delivers modern classic capability with ride-by-wire, for enhanced safety and control from twin classically styled throttle bodies, as well as a sensitively incorporated liquid cooling system with a unique radiator and larger fan. This brings better performance and cleaner, more fuel efficient riding. The Bobber also has a high first major service interval of 10,000 miles (16,000km). Category defining capability, control and comfort was a key issue with Triumph. Their ambition was to deliver a genuine bobber - without compromise to the ride, comfort or rider control, to have it ride just like a Triumph should. With an all new bespoke frame to suit the unique Bobber geometry and minimal rear end, new forks with bespoke springing and damping, a low seat height, great stand over and firstin-class adjustable riding position the Bobber delivers a truly class defining riding dynamic. Taking the capability to the highest level the Bobber also features a host of rider focused technology, including: Ride-by-Wire - Delivering enhanced ride-

ability, feel, safety and control, from a single throttle body. Riding Modes - Linked to the ride-by-wire system there are two selectable riding modes; ROAD and RAIN. They are selectable via the new switch gear and command two dedicated throttle maps for maximum control and safety in different riding conditions ABS - The latest generation anti-lock braking system – introducing a new level of safety and control yet remaining unobtrusive and with minimal visual impact. Switchable Traction Control - Switchable traction control via the instrument menu helps to maximize rider safety and comfort. Torque Assist Clutch - Designed to reduce clutch lever effort for the rider, bringing a lighter touch and feel to the clutch and making it easier to ride, and for longer. LED Rear Light - Incorporated into the classic design, it creates a distinctive light pattern with enhanced power efficiency and excellent visibility. Engine Immobilizer - Thatcham approved immobilizer incorporated into the new key with high value Triumph badge. Stylish Twin Clocks - Feature packed clocks high quality twin clocks cleverly incorporating a digital menu system for fingertip control while riding. With: - Gear position indicator - Odometer - Two trip settings - Service indicator - Range to empty - Fuel level - Average and current fuel consumption - Clock - Traction control settings Finally to enhance the authentic look the Bobber has classic wire-spoke wheels, with stylish black rims and inner tubes fitted with Avon Cobra tires developed specifically for the Bobber. With a signature ‘wider rear wheel’ Bobber set up it has a 19’’x2.5’’ on the front, fitted with an Avon Cobra AV71 for reduced mass for high-speed maneuverability, and 16’’x3.5’’ wider wheel fitted on the rear, with a category-first AV72 radial tyre with cobra tread pattern for class-leading stability. But there is no need to stop there. This

bobber is truly a blank canvas for individual style. The Bonneville Bobber has been designed with customizing in mind with over 150 accessories available for more style, detailing and comfort, and for even more performance. For even an more distinctive character there are high ‘ape hanger’ bars, a statement rider seat and bar end peep mirrors. For riders who are looking for more long distance comfort there is a stylish comfort seat in a ribbed and quilted version, a heated grip kit and a cruise control kit. To deliver even more performance to the Bobber, Triumph is introducing a new partnership with FOX with a dual branded adjustable rear suspension unit plus a range of new Bobber exhausts from Vance and Hines with beautifully machined aluminum end caps which are adjustable to change the profile. Some of Triumph’s other models to choose from include the Street Cup, the Scrambler and the Street Twin... The Street Cup is a stunning new addition to the Street Family. Born from the stripped back style of the Street Twin, it delivers a stunning street racer attitude, bringing together the minimal bodywork details and contemporary finishes of the Street Twin, with a host of new urban sports features, such as an authentic bullet seat and removable café racer seat cowl. With dynamic urban sports focused ergonomics, dropped ‘Ace’ bars and dedicated rear suspension, the new Street Cup delivers an engaging riding position with smooth and agile handling. The 900cc high-torque Bonneville engine is perfectly tuned for a blast around town, or escaping it all on twisty B-roads. Wherever you ride you are always accompanied by a raw, rich soundtrack from its shorter, lighter twin upswept satin black and stainless steel silencers. The sensitive incorporation of rider focused technology, ride-by-wire, switchable traction control, ABS, torque-assist clutch and low seat height, provide an enhanced level of confidence, comfort and control. The all new Street Scrambler has been designed to deliver a more purposeful and beautiful Scrambler style, with unique features and detailing. Sharing the same contemporary custom principles as the Street Twin, the new Street Scrambler has

the iconic Bonneville silhouette combined with clean lines, minimal bodywork, contemporary finishes and sleek fuel tank. Completing its distinctive style is a host of purposeful scrambler features, including an interchangeable pillion seat and aluminium rear rack, removable pillion pegs and hangers, adventure style front pegs and bash plate. The dedicated new chassis has longer rear shocks, a 19 inch front wheel, wide handlebars and a low seat height. Fitted with Metzeler Tourance tyres, the new Street Scrambler is designed to deliver real capability and control on every type of road. Ready to personalise, you can choose from over 150 accessories to add even more off-road attitude and style. The Street Twin is our most contemporary, fun and accessible new Bonneville. Powered by an all new high torque 900cc engine, with its unique character, distinctive sound, stripped back styling and dynamic riding experience--the new Street Twin is the perfect Bonneville for today’s rider. The new Street Twin combines a low seat height and accessible riding position with an exciting and responsive new engine with a sharp, more refined and stripped back look for maximum fun and ride-ability every day. An all new chassis and suspension delivers dynamic handling and an engaging riding experience. With a truly modern standard of capability and sensitively incorporate rider focused technology, including ABS, Ride- By-Wire and Traction Control, the Street Twin is built to ride like a Triumph should. The Street Twin is designed, with the spirit of individualism and customisation in mind, to be the perfect starting point to build your own custom bike. With over 150 new stylish accessories available and a set of ‘inspiration’ kits, to use as your starting point or to have fitted by your dealer as a complete set, it’s never been easier to build your own custom Bonneville. Overall, we think that Triumph has really impressed us with their new line up--not only covering a wide range of models but targeting the demographics from young to older riders alike. The older 40’s nostalgic style paired perfectly with the new technology and with endless possibilities to accessorize if so desired.
