Rumour Has It

Edmonton’s motorcycle community wants a bike noise bylaw yanked from the books after a “precedent-setting” case Thursday saw a ticket ripped up. “My ticket set the precedent,” said Stuart Young, whose fine was quashed by a traffic court commissioner. “I think this goes a long way in showing the City of Edmonton they’ve made a wrong choice. Young was slapped with two $250 motorcycle noise bylaw tickets last July, shortly after the new rules took effect. One was dismissed in court Thursday, while the other will be tossed by the Crown prosecutor, Young said. City council approved a bylaw amendment last June that allows police officers to issue fines for bikes that are louder than 92 decibels while idling or louder than 96 decibels at an engine speed that’s greater than idling. 2O11Ducati Diavel... She’s a One Spicy Meatball! When rumours began circulating that Ducati was planning on introducing a cruiser model to their lineup, reaction was exactly what you would expect from the die hard Ducati riders; shock, horror and probably the odd case of vomiting uncontrollably. After spy shots of a fat tired machine were leaked and began circulating, rumblings of a “Mega Monster” added fuel to the fire. It seems fitting that a cry of “Ignurànt comm’ al diavel!” (Evil, like the devil!) when the new concept model was first shown to technicians became the new model’s moniker. But don’t panic Ducati fans; the Diavel has more than enough of the tried and true Ducati heritage and muscle to satisfy any true blue Ducati rider. To give the devil its due, Ducati looked to the Multistrada for a powerplant; like the saying goes, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it, the Testastretta 11° L twin motor punches out 1198.4 cc’s with 162 hp and 94 ft lb of torque. The similarities to the Multistrada end there however; different cam timing and new exhaust and intake ports combined with a new exhaust system with equal length cross section headers and dual cans give the Diavel a 12 hp and 6.5 ft-lb boost over its Multistrada brethren’s 150 hp and 87.5 ft-lbs. The Diavel, by all rights should have tons of low end grunt and great mid range but should still be able to stand up and shout with a crack of the throttle. Remember when the Yamaha VMax first came out? It was based on bridge racers and I’m seeing some similarities with new Ducati; this may be a cool bike for some shenanigans between stop lights.

Inside the Testastretta, a larger water pump and dual radiators on either side of the bike keeps things cool. Getting the bike the breath it needs are aluminium air intakes which also contribute to the Diavel’s look and shape. A 17 litre fuel tank and covers crafted from steel rather than plastic complete the brawny look of the big Duc. A massive 240 mm tire rides on a cast aluminium single sided swingarm. A Sachs fully adjustable rear shock is positioned under the swingarm allowing for a seat height of 770 mm with the option of a seat height of 20 mm higher or lower. Up front are fully adjustable 50 mm Marzocchi forks, each fork leg has an adjustment knob for setting up the damping. There is absolutely no way this bike could even be considered a Ducati without the trellis frame and the classic Italian styling Ducati is known for, and the Ducati design team doesn’t disappoint. “With the front wheel kept close to the Diavel’s body and using the short tail of a sport bike, we were able to blend this muscular design with a chassis that matched. The stance of the Diavel is that of readiness, dominance, and confidence bordering on superiority. With lateral radiators adding muscle to its broad “shoulders,” which then taper down across the engine and into the belly-fairing with oil cooler, the athlete took shape.” A molded headlight and cover with separate high and low beam has a strip of LED lights between the two and will light up the darkest road. Turn signals are also LED strips and “follow the precise line of the under-seat

panelling, providing great visibility of the rear-end while keeping the external lines of the bike clean.” The Diavel features some technology from earlier Ducati products and some new stuff as well. A hands free ignition system, an electronic key with a dedicated code can start the machine within an radius of about 2 metres. The electronic key also doubles as a standard key to open the fuel cap and seat. Integrated Ducati Traction Control and Ride Modes are straight from the track and allow for setting the bike for sport, touring or urban riding settings. As you might expect the settings determine how much power is available to you; sport gives you the full 162 hp while touring offers more managable power and urban makes the bike a pussycat. Instrumentation is a split leveldesign with an upper LCD display showing information such as speed, RPM, warning lights, temper-

ature and time of day. The lower level uses Thin Film Transistor (TFT) and shows the riding mode, gear and Ducat Traction Control setting. This TFT technology has high colour graphics and uses the surrounding light to decide on a black or white background. The Diavel is also available in a carbon fibre model which lightens the bike up but also raises the price a bit. A quick scan of some dealer websites shows the standard model priced around the $19 500 mark and the Diavel Carbon a little higher around the $21 500 area. The Diavel is really a hard bike to categorize, the fat rear tire has shades of big North American cruiser, the styling of the tank and bodywork say naked bike, the forks and tail piece are sportbike, the brawny stance says muscle bike. One thing is for sure, the Ducati Diavel is a head turner and has broken a few molds at Ducati.

The all-new 2011 Honda VFR1200FA 1,237 cc engine has a narrow 76-degree cylinder angle, Unicam™ valve train, asymmetrical front/rear cylinder spacing, and other advanced features. Throttle-by-wire, a smart new shaft-drive system, available Dual Clutch Transmission (VFR1200FA DCT model)... it all adds up to a futuristic new bike for those who love to ride hard, ride far, and ride often.

Dear Cruiser, small amount of savings really warrants me forgiving you and welcoming you to the solitude that is my driveway. I don’t think I can do the fancy leathers and chaps, definitely not any fringes. I must confess, I don’t get the whole vest thing covered in buttons and patches. I suppose it will grow on me, like a bad rash. But how does one stop that itch? The best way I can think of may be a track day. But you are not welcome at a track day, with your truck like handling, saddle bags and massive windscreen. Sleek is the word at the track. Oh but there are days when your plush seat calls to me, your long wheel base and its smooth ride, some comfortably placed footpegs. Yes there may be something to you and your low and long stance. Your comfort on a long ride is unquestioned. Your ability to carry large amounts of luggage keeps my dear wife and her many pairs of shoes happy when we travel somewhere on two wheels. The large windscreen many of you have is a welcome addition on a cool day and even in the rain I could tuck right in and stay relatively dry. Some of you even have a cool CD player and some speakers. I could play my tunes as loud as any meatball in a tricked out Civic. But no sewer pipe exhaust please. I must admit that throaty growl of the big V-Twin many of you have is not so unappealing that I may not want to crack the throttle occasionally. Maybe I could even buy a nice after market set of pipes for you and see what that does for your resonance. Hmmmmm. After all, they say everything is better in the wind, and it is the same wind I would be in if I was on one of your sporty brethren. Yes perhaps the time is coming for us to be friends, but not yet, not right now. Until then I’ll carry on. Sincerely Tim.

Hello, it has been awhile, hope you are well. I think the time may have come for us to try and make up. How long has it been? 27 years ago, I believe, was when I first threw a leg over you, dear cruiser. And that was only because I had to use you for the training course I took. Yes I have ridden other models of you for various things including product reviews. Yes I may not have always been the nicest person to you, but I was always fair to you and though I always said what was not right with you, I always spoke of your many good things too. I do appreciate your two wheeled heritage and your lazy boy riding position. Yes the day is coming when you and I will have to try and be friends. Someday you will come and stay at my house permanently. I’m not completely happy about this. The times I have ridden you, you did not have the light, snappy handling of the usual sporty type of bikes I prefer. You did not have the heart stopping rush with a heavy snap of the throttle and where the Hell is the easy wheelies? I can see you mocking me, laughing at my dislike of you, knowing full well that I will probably come crawling to you someday. I have such disdain for you, you and your gleaming chrome and fat rear tire. This morning my back cracked loudly and mentioned that the riding position on my sportier model may not be the best for us anymore. My back said the time is coming for us to consider one of you. My wrist was sore and stiff from the cold, and also piped up that a more laid back riding position may make him happier as well. My knees even perked up when a cruiser was mentioned. Have they lost their love of dragging themselves around a corner? Personally I think they are a pair of punks that are deserting me when the chips are down. So long suckers, who needs you anyway? My insurance agent has been yammering on about rates and how I may be able to get a better rate on a different type of bike, mainly a cruiser. I’m not sure the

Motorcycle Helmets Reduce Spine Injuries Motorcycle helmets, long known to dramatically reduce the number of brain injuries and deaths from crashes, appear to also be associated with a lower risk of cervical spine injury, new research from Johns Hopkins suggests. “We are debunking a popular myth that wearing a helmet while riding a motorcycle can be detrimental during a motorcycle crash,” says study leader Adil H. Haider, M.D., M.P.H., an assistant professor of surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. “Using this new evidence, legislators should revisit the need for mandatory helmet laws. There is no doubt that helmets save lives and reduce head injury.

And now we know they are also associated with a decreased risk of cervical spine injury.” For more than two decades, the researchers say, activists lobbying against universal helmet laws have cited a small study suggesting that, in the event of a crash, the weight of a helmet could cause significant torque on the neck that would be devastating to the spine. But results of the new study, published online in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons, shows that helmeted riders were 22 percent less likely to suffer cervical spine injury than those without helmets. The study reviewed and mined the National Trauma Databank,

looking through information on more than 40,000 motorcycle collisions between 2002 and 2006. Even with what researchers say are mountains of evidence that helmets reduce mortality and traumatic brain injury after a collision, many states, including Florida, Pennsylvania and Texas, have over the past 15 years repealed their mandatory helmet use laws after lobbying from motorcycle riders, Haider says. Anti-helmet lobbyists often cite a 25-year-old study which found more spine injuries in helmet wearers. That study, has been criticized by many, including the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, ...continued on Page 8

BMW Motorrad can look back on an extraordinarily successful motorcycle season in 2010. By December 2010, 98,047 motorcycles worldwide were delivered to customers (previous year: 87,306 units), a growth of 12.3%. In a highly challenging market environment, BMW Motorrad has recorded the strongest growth by far in the competition. BMW Motorrad has recorded considerable growth in virtually every country. Supported by its continued product offensive, the blue and white brand could raise its market share to a historical high. Hendrik von Kuenheim, Head of BMW Motorrad: “The 2010 motorcycle season was a delightful year for us. Our range of innovative models met with great customer interest all over the world. Not only could we sell 10,741 more motorcycles than in the previous year, but at the same time we were able to considerably strengthen our market position in a highly discouraging market environment. Our market share rose to an all time high, and by December BMW Motorrad was the volume leader on eleven markets.” In Germany, again the largest single market in 2011 for BMW Motorrad, 17,816 BMW motorcycles were registered (previous year: 15,833), a growth of 12.5%. BMW Motorrad could therefore maintain its leadership on both the total market and the 500 cc plus segment. The share of the total market was 21.5% by December (previous year: 17.7%), and 23.2% (previous year: 19.0%) on the 500 cc plus segment. In other words, almost every fourth new motorcycle over 500 cc registered in Germany originated from the BMW Motorrad plant in Berlin. Italy continues as the second strongest single market for BMW Motorrad. Here 14,386 BMW motorcycles (previous year: 13,089) were registered, a growth of about 10%. The BMW Motorrad share on the 500 cc plus segment rose to 18.4% (previous year: 14.3%). On the highly traditional motorcycle market in Italy, BMW Motorrad could considerably expand its market position and take over as volume leader. The next most important sales markets are the USA, France, Spain, and the UK, followed by Brazil. The latter emerging market is gradually becoming one of BMW Motorrad’s strongest sales markets. To do just to the importance of this market, BMW Motorrad will continue to expand its local motorcycle production facility in Manaus/Brazil, which was first established at the end of 2009. TMT

The Boulevard S40 adds a shot of advanced Suzuki technology to this timeless design to create a bike that combines exciting performance with rock-solid reliability. One of the S40’s major attractions is its lightweight responsiveness. Weighing just 381 pounds, it’s great for cruising down the boulevard or getting outside the city limits. Wherever you ride, one twist of the throttle rewards you with a blast of low-end and mid-range torque. And when you’re up to cruising speed, you’ll really appreciate the engine’s smooth performance. The Boulevard S40 for 2010 - designed for you to enjoy the simple pleasure and pure excitement of motorcycling.

because of flawed statistical reasoning. “Additionally, helmet technology has significantly improved since that time — now helmets are much lighter but even sturdier and more protective” Haider says. Forty years ago, Haider says, nearly all states required helmets for motorcyclists of any age in the United States. Today, helmets are mandatory for all riders in only 20 states, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia. Motorcycle use has risen sharply over the past 10 years in the United States. Since 1997, motorcycle injuries in the U.S. have increased by roughly 5,000 per year and motorcycle fatalities have nearly doubled, according to the new journal article. Haider’s study, like many others before, found a reduction in risk of traumatic brain injury in helmet wearers (65 percent) and decreased odds of death (37 percent). But the new paper, Haider says, is the strongest evidence yet that helmets significantly reduce cervical spine injury, which can result in paralysis. Noise Ticket Squashed University of Alberta student Stuart Young successfully fought a noise violation issued to him just nine days after the City of Edmonton made the amendment to its bylaws. The July 1, 2010 amendment allows police to issue $250 fines to anyone with a motorcycle louder than 92 decibels while idling and 96 decibels while the engine is revving. William Andrew, the commissioner who heard the case, felt police didn’t comply with standards set by the Society of Automotive Engineers when they collected evidence against Young and Yamaha motorcycle. Though Young feels this may be a precedent setting victory city lawyers strees that each case will have to be addressed individually. TMT

Contributing Writer, TMT

That’s the Way Love Goes February, the month devoted to love. Valentine’s Day the celebrated chance to express “amore” in your life or vie for the one you want. It’s the most popular day for couples to wed. So honestly, how could I avoid the desire to write about love - and motorcycling? Yes, I confess, and it’s no secret that I’m in love with motorcycling! Nothing else to date has succeeded to top this passion. You can’t break us up and in fact I’ve a license as a full endorsement of the relationship – a marriage license of sorts! We’ve shared thousands of kilometres between us and stayed together through the “rough patches” and catastrophes such as crashes on the track. We’ve moved to different continents and adjusted our methods through different variations of the bond. The day we first met is still a perfect memory. It was in Nova Scotia while stationed for a short term business position. I was shy and excited by a somewhat intimidated perception but it seemed so powerful and oh so intriguing! After the initial introductions and we got to know each other better, we partnered up, hit the road and never looked back, except to check blind spots! So I thought I’d see where others stand on the matter although I pretty much knew most would share the same passion that I do. I decided to use my social network on facebook which is 95% made up of motorcyclists to see what others really felt. I posted an update status question that asked: Would u say you have feelings of ‘love’ for your motorcycle? Would you say it has a life or personality of its own with an anthropomorphic tendency for your ride? The responses were overwhelming! One reply stated “It sure does. It’s a part of me. I talk to it like it’s real and feel bad during the winter and it sits all by itself in the garage!” Another expressed “I definitely feel like there’s a connection between me and my bike! I talk to her, pet her... and I “feel” her when I ride, especially at the track! She becomes part of me and me a part of her!” There was “YES!!! I love riding” and “I love love love my bike!!” and then just a simple response of “I do. I do. I do!”

All of us remember the moment when we officially purchased and then picked up our first motorcycle and when it really becomes ours! We also remember and for some too many occasions of regret at situations when we had to sell a bike or trade it in for an upgrade. I’ll also bet that every rider has at least one photo of their motorcycle in their smart phone! I still have the key to my first sport bike. I told the person who purchased the bike from me I had lost the spare key just so I could keep a small memento! It was the key from my 1987 Honda Hurricane CBR600. I had to sell it because I was moving to the Caribbean. The other motorcycle “divorce” that still causes me pain, was my recent move to Canada. Customs would not allow me to bring my 1995 Ducati 900SSE due to emission and engine issues. Motorcycling seems also to make love happen. So many friends I know met their partners during a motorcycle trip or event of some sort. The shared camaraderie removes a lot of social barriers that normally stand between everyday potential casual encounters. The renowned “biker’s wave” already symbolizes our kinship with each other. Could you imagine what reactions would occur if we waved at every one else in an auto? The best motorcycle love story I’ve heard was shared with me during my Daytona Bike week and while filming our TLC biker girls show. We were co-hosting the largest “biker wedding vow renewal ceremony”. Motorcycle couples had gathered in the hundreds aiming to set the new record for this special ceremony. Our view from the stage was thrilling and overwhelming from the energy emitting from these ‘in love’ motorcycle married couples. It was after this ceremony I met an elderly couple in their mid/late 60’s. They had been together their entire lives. The wife and passenger said to me, “If we had had to speak to each other all those years, we would never have stayed together!” I guess not having to converse is another benefit of motorcycling. Motorcycling is definitely my Valentine! The way I see it, anything that “starts my heart” in such a manner, must be love!

Dorothy Seabourne - I Can Do It, You Can Too “Where did the time go and how much do I have left? No one knows but I do know I can think and plan and aim for the mountains rather than the hills. It’s not my personality to accept less. When life makes an unexpected detour, I can only go with the flow the best way I know how and in the meantime, I’ll dream and keep looking to the future. Dreams do come true.”- Dorothy Seabourne by FIONA SMITH Freelance Writer Dorothy Seabourne has done it all. At the tender age of 70, she has raised a family, been married for over 35 years, enjoyed grandchildren, lost 2 children, had a career as an Upholsterer, been an avid Motorcyclist for almost 30 years and now, is a Writer. Her self-published book “I Did It, You Can Too” is a collection of short stories that take you, the reader (and rider) through her treks across North America & Europe. Dorothy has clocked over 800,000 km’s on 7 various bikes during her 30 years, both with groups and solo. But don’t let her age fool you. She might be 70 and white haired, but she’s as feisty as any 20 year old, and equally as passionate about her motorcycle, which currently is her 1100 Honda Silver Ghost. It began when her brother-in-law left a ’75 Goldwing motorcycle at her place. She was

43. With her husband’s encouragement, she took a 20 hour motorcycling course, in the rain, wrecked her boots and laughs as she admits, “I never looked back.” She says she got her license on a 1000, moved on to an 1100 Interstate, a 1200, and then, two 1500’s SE. The best, she says, being the present, an 1800. As a new rider, back then, she initially stuck to backroads with her husband patiently driving the car behind her. But it wasn’t long before she wanted more. She began looking for other lady riders. It was her involvement with the Motor Maids organization that opened up, literally, the whole world for her. 1990 saw Seabourne touring Europe with this spirited group of lady-riders. After they had gone all over Europe, Dorothy was left wanting even more. She has since toured solo, or with lady-friends that she’s met over the years, including a Nun from Israel. She’s been to most large cities and to many, many, a small

village. Where there’s a road, there’s a way. The book, she says, is a natural extension of this passion for riding. A gifted storyteller, Seabourne’s book weaves a clever blend of two-wheeling tales with personal, emotional and spiritual reflection. She acknowledges that “my desire for this book is to document the feelings, places, the sad times and the very good times thoroughly, so you, the reader, can imagine that you are operating the bike as it flies through the mountain passes or rides on the North American highways.” Seabourne understands the personal and very intimate experience of being on your bike and how it can heal or change a person. “During the best and worst of times, on my bike, I can enjoy freedom; I’m with God. Riding is more than image. It’s about being me, with God.” It is her hope that through her book, she can stir those sitting at home, or at their desks, wishing for these kinds of journeys, into getting on their bikes and

doing it…thus the title of the book, “I Can Do It, You Can Too”. She wants you to know that age is no obstacle, nor is gender. “I’m a 70 year old woman, if I can do this, anyone can…” This past year, she toured all over the USA, Rome & Europe, averaging about 10,000 miles; and has a 2012 trip to New Zealand scheduled with her sister. “When all is said and done, I can say I was where I wanted to be and wouldn’t change one second of those years, except perhaps turn back the hands of time and start all over again.” – Dorothy Seabourne Seabourne’s book is available by emailing Dorothy at: dorothyseabourne@yahoo.ca or by mailing $20 to: 777 Wyldewood Road, Sherkston, Ont. Business Profile

Clockwise: Principle owners Dave Barbosa and Mike Jeronimo, used bike showroom, 3 lift service bay, parts and accessories, clothing boutique, multi-level storage.

Canada Cruisers - Customers Come First. “We know what it’s like being on the other side of the desk and have geared our business towards your satisfaction & comfort level. We’ll look after your bike like it was our own.”

by MARC FRANTZ Contributing Writer I was in my friend’s garage with a few other fellas, enjoying a few pops and talking bikes, bikes and more bikes. My friend pulled off his motorcycle cover to get something out of his saddlebag, and the rest of us all chimed in at the same time “did you get a new bike?” This guy’s Road Glide was a number of years old, but it looked like it was brand new. The chrome actually hurt my eyes, and I had to squint to keep looking at it. Everything on the bike was gleaming and perfect, despite having over 200,000 KM’s on it. Did you get it re-painted? Is that a new engine? Are those new parts? “Shut-up b&%#hes!” He exclaimed to us. “I had the guys at Canada Cruisers do a detail job on my bike, that’s all!” It was at this moment that the three of us had a sort of “religious experience” in that we actually learned something, and that something was valuable to all of us motorcyclists in the GTA! Canada Cruisers is not a riding organi-

zation as some of you may think (me included), but a licensed bike shop providing repair & customization services for all bikes. They have a big & beautiful trailer for pick-up & delivery as well. They also provide year round storage services, detail services done by certified motorcycle detail specialists as well as having an accessories department filled with goodies from Parts Canada, Drag Specialties, Kuryakyn, Motovan, Mustang, Big Bore, Low & Mean, Driven, MBL Innovations and Custom World International. They just started carrying the new Air-Bag Jacket, and the Fat Bagger System with the deep bags and fat fender for that fat rear look for touring bikes and Softails. They even have their own in house air brush painter if you really want to stand out in a crowd. I spoke with David Barbosa, one of the owners of Canada Cruisers. For this riding season, David is excited by the addition of a Dyno Machine being installed at Canada Cruisers. “We’re going to start offering performance services to the ridership in the GTA, which is the logical next step to our

line-up of offerings at our shop. I asked David about what his vision is for Canada Cruisers; “We want Canada Cruisers to be a place where people can come in and be comfortable, free of the high pressure dealership atmosphere. We’re not a club affiliated shop, but a group of passionate motorcycle people that are customers too. We know what it’s like being on the other side of the desk and have geared our business towards your satisfaction & comfort level. We’ll look after your bike like it was our own.” Their website: http://www.canadacruisers.ca tells the story very well. It’s simple and easy to navigate, free from too much information and clutter. They even offer consignment services both at the shop and on-line if you’re interested in selling your bike. Compared to the other high-dollar conglomerates, Canada Cruisers is a small business with a nice clean store front & shop, filled with experienced & passionate people that want to really help us bikers in the GTA with our biking needs year round.

I’ve always had a soft spot for the ‘little guy’ trying to make a living in a marketplace filled with monster sized superstores. This is a truly specialized service, performance & accessories shop. Canada Cruisers offer real detailing services, and not a ‘wash & wax’ job that we’ve all become used to. Rather than spending five or so hours doing the detailing job myself on a Sunday, I think I’ll give these guys a try. Year round storage services is another exclusive at Canada Cruisers and a bonus for us! I’m so glad that I found out about Canada Cruisers. Why are all the best places a secret? Not anymore! As brothers & sisters of the two wheeled religion, let’s do our part and pay Canada Cruisers a visit. This just may turn out to be your favorite one stop shop for everything! Canada Cruisers is located in Milton, (8750 Regional Road, Unit #2 Milton, On). They can be reached at (905) 208-7433, or shoot them an email at: ride@canadacruisers.ca . Their website even has a Google map with directions to the store.

MARC FRANTZ Technical Writer, TMT

The Spring Pre-Check My best buddy Keith is a living countdown timer when it comes to spring. He always starts at the six week milestone saying: “Six more weeks till spring!” and tells everyone. He will faithfully and diligently continue to countdown each week until we’re finally free of ‘Old Man Winter’ officially. Everyone that knows Keith likes that he provides us bikers with this public service announcement, as it gets us thinking about being in the wind again! It also starts the dialogue in the brain about the current status of my bike. I start going through my mental checklist: “Hmm, my battery has been on the charger all winter, I got the oil changed just before I put baby away.” This checklist then turns into a nagging headache as I keep trying to remember if I did this or missed that, many moons ago. We bikers live a precarious life on two wheels, exciting as hell, but precarious nonetheless. We have enough problems with car drivers blind to us in the spring when we’re all back on the road, and the potholes and road impediments mother nature has created over the winter. I guess excitement and danger go hand in hand, and we all are aware of this every time we fire up our bikes. The thing that gets me every time is to hear that one of us has gone down. Whether I know the person or not, if you ride, you’re a brother or a sister to me, and I feel bad for the biker and his family, and the mess left to clean-up afterwards, with bills, paperwork and general grief. I always push for safety when talking to the ridership, whether it is proper apparel (helmets, gloves, boots, armour, etc) or the condition of your ride. A bike we can replace, but you are one of a kind, and irreplaceable! This little ditty is about the latter. With everything we have to contend with, the condition of your machine is the most important aspect of you being able to make it home in one piece. I know some people who always try to forego getting a clean bill of health on their bikes. I tell them to wait on getting that new Icon helmet, or those chaps with the Bon-Jovi’s (leather frills) and look after your life first! Tires, Suspension & Brakes! These are

the things that keep us safe, and should be inspected before we ‘get our motor runnin’. Cracks in the sidewalls of your tires, replace them before they fail on you whilst riding and you become Spiderman from that Broadway play who kept hitting the ground. If your machine is a few years old, or you find the front end dives down a bit too much when you apply the front brakes, take it to your bike shop and have it looked at. New fork oil makes the bike feel like its brand new, and it will really aid in braking should you be faced with an OMG panic situation. Brake pads should always be inspected before a ride. Perhaps a small stone got between your pad & disc, or the lever feels a bit spongy. Have this inspected or one day you’re going to grab a big handful of brake and it won’t be there for you. Don’t forget lubrication, and I don’t mean just lubing up the chain. Your bike is a machine that has many moving parts, a little lube can go a long way. Any pivot points should be checked and lubed, don’t forget things like your footpegs, clutch lever and brake lever and pedal. Any cables may need some lube, there is a tool available that makes the job easy and it is not expensive. When it comes to the chain check you manual for the proper tension and adjust it accordingly. All the electrics should be checked as well. Your lights are your first line of defense out there on the road. Make sure the headlight and front and rear turn signals work. Make sure the taillight works and don’t forget to give the front brake lever a squeeze and rear brake pedal press to make sure the brake light comes on. It is surprising how many times I have seen a bike with no brake light. My ritual every spring is to book an appointment with my service shop for an inspection. I tell them to go through the bike from one end, to the other, and report back to me with anything they find out of the ordinary. For a couple hundred dollars, I get the peace of mind that an experienced and licensed tech has given me the green light for another season of worry free riding. You should get into the habit of this yourself. Isn’t your life worth a couple hundred dollars?

Szoke “Goes Green” for 2011 Jordan Szoke signs a one year deal with Competition Systems and Canadian Kawasaki for 2011. Szoke will aim for his sixth consecutive Superbike Championship aboard the all new 2011 Kawasaki ZX10 Szoke’s record book history with “Team Green” dates back to his first Superbike Championship in 1998 as the youngest racer to win a National Championship in Canadian History aboard a ZX-7. Szoke returned to Kawasaki in ‘06 which lead to a record breaking string of National Superbike and Sportbike Championships in 2006-20072008-2009 aboard the infamous 636, ZX6 and ZX10. Worldly sources were calling as Szoke was also invited to Valencia Spain in 2008 to ride the Moto GP ZX-RR, and filled

in for an injured AMA Superbike racer at Laguna Seca for Monster Energy Kawasaki. Most recently Szoke earned the Superbike and Pro Sportbike National Championships in 2010 stretching his back to back consecutive championships to five. Owning and Managing his own team also earned him “Team of the Year”. When asked about being back under the Kawasaki banner Szoke says “It feels really good to be back on a Kawi again. I have worked with the same crew in our championship seasons previous, so I am excited to be back. Kawasaki also has a new ZX10 model out so I can’t wait to ride and develop that.”

Kuhn Will Race for Toolee Toolee Motorsports is pleased to announce Lee Kuhn Jr’s participation in the 2011 Harley-Davidson XR1200 Cup, part of the Canadian Superbike Championship series sponsored by Parts Canada. “We have always been a Harley Davidson family,” said Kuhn. “My grandma rides a custom Sportster. She is one of the founding members of the Hamilton H.O.G. Chapter, as is my dad who rode and raced Harleys. It is so cool to continue on the family tradition.” Kuhn’s 2011 Toolee Motorsports Harley Davidson XR1200X will be race prepared by his father, team owner Lee Kuhn Sr, using the spec Vance & Hines race kit along with suspension components from Race Tech. “The top XR’s in the 2010 AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 series were Race Tech equipped,” said Lee Sr. “I wouldn’t consider another suspension company.” Lee Kuhn Jr is a 13 time Mini GP champion in Canada and the Unites States. He started road racing at the National level in 2008, where he finished 2nd in the Parts Canada Superbike, Honda CBR Cup. Along with being a fulltime med student, he most recently raced a Toolee Motorsports Triumph Daytona 675 in the 2010 Parts Canada Superbike, AM 600 class, finishing 4th at the penultimate round at AMP in

Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia. DP Brakes official brake sponsor of 2011 Canadian National Motocross Championship Larry Mills, President DP Brakes and Clutches North America, is pleased to announce that DP Brakes will be the official brake sponsor of the 2011 CMRC Canadian National Motocross Championship. DP Brakes is a world leader in sintered braking technology and a favored product used by motorcycle racers and street riders alike. “I would like to thank DP Brakes for recognizing CMRC’s National series as a valuable tool to promote their line of brakes in the Canadian market,” said Mark Stallybrass, CMRC President. “We look forward to building on a long term, mutually beneficial relationship”. “DP Brakes continues to show steady growth in the Canadian market. With this type of high profile exposure and support to the racing audience, we hope to continue this trend for years to come,” Mills said. “We have had unbelievable support over the years from our exclusive distributor, Parts Canada, so by adding the CMRC MX series this will strengthen that relationship even more.” TMT

When asked about the new model for ‘11 Szoke replies, “I have spent a lot of my career developing motorcycles, and this one is no different. Kawasaki has a brand new model this year and it looks really (really) awesome. With the team that we have working with us, and my experience I don’t foresee any problems getting the new superbike up to speed.” Competition Systems and Szoke plan on starting pre-season testing in March. Szoke and Waznie Racing would like to thank their 2010 sponsors for stepping up and providing their last minute support during the previous Championship season, and look forward to working with many of them in the future. 2011 Monster Energy MX Nationals Series Schedule Announced. The Wastelands in Nanaimo, British Columbia returns to CMRC’s nine round, coast to coast national motocross series. The Vancouver Island MX Association, which includes clubs from Victoria, Nanaimo, Pt. Alberni, Pt. McNeill and Campbell River, will spearhead the organization and logistics surrounding the national to ensure the event and track will meet national caliber standards. “We are very pleased to return to the Island after a two year layoff, as The Wastelands were a part of the series for thirteen years. Having the VIMX behind the event makes me very confident the event will be executed in the most professional manner as it was in the late ‘90s”, stated CMRC President Mark Stallybrass. “We are currently trying to make arrangements to make the transportation from the Mainland to the Island much more affordable, which will make the event much ...continued on Page 20

On the heels of a ground breaking 2010 season that showed the Ontario racing community what was possible in offroad race promotion, WEC and CMRC are back with an exciting new calendar of racing for 2011! “Our venues this year will continue to favour those riders who want a variety of terrain, fast courses, MX style obstacles and the opportunity for spectators,” explains WEC’s Sean Wiesner. “Media and sponsor friendly racing is the future, and off-road racers have been hiding in the woods for too long. We will continue in our mission to bring off-road racing into the mainstream.” CMRC President Mark Stallybrass continues, “Following WEC’s successful inaugural year of staging Cross Country events in Ontario, the upcoming year looks to be taking positive steps forward with new venues, newly established partnerships between offroadmotorcycles.ca, MXP and CMRC ensuring greater publicity and exposure, plus incentive programs aimed at attracting motocross racers to Cross Country events. CMRC Compétition in Quebec will offer a complete series in 2011 as well, so Cross Country racing has a very bright future in Canada.” Last year scheduling conflicts, weather and land use issues prevented some of our lofty goals from being realized. This year we will bring racing at some facilities we all wanted to see on the schedule. Racing at Walton has been a dream for many over the years, and 2011 is the year it will happen in off-road! Parry Sound, the site of two back-to-back WEC World Championships and two stellar CEC events, will also be on the calendar. Motocross facilities like Gopher Dunes will be realized, as well as the proven Motopark, with completely revised and longer courses. Favourites from last year, including Wingham and Burnt River, will guarantee to please. Our grand finale at Wheatley, hosted by the great folks at the Erie Ramblers, will again showcase a course that incorporates features from all varieties of dirt racing. Big news this year is that our fantastic Pee Wee riders are now competing for Championship status. Last year WEC introduced the concept of Pee Wee CrossCountry racing. They were introduced as a support class, as nobody knew if there were enough young riders out there to justify a Championship class. The riders came and WEC learned these “future stars” deserve what their older racers have… a true championship! The complete 8 round schedule will be released shortly with 4 spring events and 4 fall events counting as seperate championships. Please keep an eye on our site www.worldendurocanada.com for details. LINDSAY THOMSON Contributing Writer, TMT

Freedom of Choice After over 30 years on motorcycles, you would think that I would be making my machine choice entirely based on my own likes and dislikes. You would think that I would have enough experience and knowledge that I could choose my ride because it is what I want, not what others think I should be on. You would think. With all these years behind me, and the miles (or kilometres for you touchy people) and having ridden all types of motorcycles over the years, in all different conditions, I would likely be fairly confident in my choices, wouldn’t I be? Wouldn’t you be? Then why does almost every ‘Harley’ rider think that I should follow his or her lead, and buy the same bike as them? Half the time the guys that sound off at me, haven’t even been riding long...Or, they don’t even own a bike! Or they haven’t even ridden a bike! It’s like burning books that you’ve never read! Now, I have ridden a number of ‘Harley’s, both stock and custom, and most of them are great bikes...If that’s what you want, but ‘Harley’ Davidson doesn’t make any bikes that meet my requirements. Should I change my requirements to match the bike? If I want to race or go to track days, what ‘Harley’ should I use? If I like riding off-road? If I regularly ride a few hours on the road but love to take off down dirt or gravel roads or trails, which ‘Harley’ model would do it with me? I’ll give you a hint...NONE OF THEM.” Hey, you... ‘Harley Purist’ who’s about to quit reading and start typing a letter to the editor, just wait one moment! This is NOT a ‘Harley’ Bashing column. One ‘Harley’ I really like is the XR 1200. This is a column about FREE CHOICE. I am sick to death of the closed-minded, “If it aint ‘Harley’, it ain’t shit” attitude. It’s a part of the “I’m a Lone Wolf...as long as all my friends do it too,” philosophy. Yup, you’re right. There are all kinds of elitists everywhere, but nowhere is it more visible than in the motorcycle community, where it is least necessary. Who cares if I like to ride a 30-year-old Japanese 2-stroke sportbike. What about the guy who gets off on riding around the neighbourhood on

his ‘Gold Wing’, waving at the kids, or the woman that just bought herself a one hundred and eighty horsepower ZX10, or the kid who just got his first scooter. Are they any less real riders than the guy who cruises Main Street on his Custom Sportster. Are They? I got chatting with a ‘Harley’ rider in Yellowknife. He was all decked out in his ‘Harley’ T-shirt, chaps, jacket and boots and he was amazed that my girlfriend and I had ridden all the way from Eastern Ontario on “those little Japanese bikes.” He told me he had around “thirty thousand dollars” invested in his bike, the saddle bags and trunk, the cruise control and touring fairing, so I asked him, ”Where have you travelled on your bike?” HE HADN’T BEEN OUT OF YELLOWKNIFE!!! I could have made fun of him. I could have commented on it being a waste of a good bike, but I don’t feel that way. He has the bike he wants, for what he wants to use it for. By the way, we were on 650 Japanese singles. And, yes, there is a Harley-Davidson Dealer in Yellowknife, as well as Honda and Yamaha dealerships. By the way, in Canada, a ‘Harley’ is as much an import as a Kawasaki or a Toyota. They assemble them in another country. Kawasaki and Toyota (and most other Japanese vehicle manufacturers) have assembly plants in the USA. Ever looked closely at a ‘Harley’? Did you notice many have Showa suspension? You do know that Honda owns Showa, don’t you. That’s just an anomaly is it? Then why can I buy carburetor parts for my Kawasaki or my vintage Yamaha at a ‘Harley’ only shop? Heck I have a ‘Harley’ shirt made in China. I ride a bike for only one reason: it makes me feel good. If I’m at the track, it feels good to ride my race bike. On the road, it feels good to ride one of my street bikes. On the dirt...you get the idea. I choose what bike I want by which company has a model that makes me feel good when I have the money to buy a new bike. I choose what I like, not what I think will impress other people. You may use other criteria. Ride whatever the Hell you like. I will too.

global rider JAQUIE McKIM Special Contributor, TMT

A Shared Mystique Recently I was in London, Ontario at a motorcycle trade show, The World of Motorcycles Expo, doing a presentation in a booth directly across from two customized choppers that were cordoned off and on display. I watched several men setting up the bikes focusing on last minute details, putting insignias or logos on the tank as well as polishing every last fine detail. There was an air of mystique around the strong and handsome men, their piercing eyes that could look right through a person, all the while not realizing who they were but knowing this was not just any ordinary display. As the day went on and the men returned in their leather jackets and vests with the words of a well known motorcycle fraternity on their backs; their very strong but silent presence was known by all who gathered around to stand in awe and take pictures of the two choppers. Many people, including myself, tried making conversation with the tallest and most fit man of the bunch with a mystique all his own. The bikes were guarded all weekend by various fellows and perhaps chaps in the process of becoming members of their motorcycle fraternity which when one thinks of a biker “oh, so you’re a biker?” - this is exactly the persona a nonbiker would have; persona non grata. And perhaps really isn’t this the “other side” of ourselves that we are trying to create just a little bit when we put on our leathers and take to the roads on our mighty steeds? I remember the first time that I rode my 2002 Honda VTX 1800 to the Tim Horton’s in Bracebridge, Ontario. I am certain you could hear me coming from three blocks away and my shiny motorcycle with tons of chrome everywhere captured the eye of a group of fellow bikers, dressed in their

leathers, they came over to my bike. The air of mystique was like something from Easy Rider as I walked my bike back into a spot that was aligned with their bikes, got off, and of course without saying a word, I walked into the Tim Horton’s to grab a coffee alone. In November 1976, my Mom and Dad were out for a ride on their bikes. Bathroom necessities caused them to turn into McDonald’s. They grabbed a coffee and went to sit and drink it. They passed by a table with a well-dressed family and two children to get to the empty table. The look the parents gave them was demeaning and despicable. They were not part of any group, just a couple who enjoyed biking. In fact, they were both teachers who just loved the freedom of riding. Isn’t it interesting that in the bikers’ sub-culture you really don’t know anything about the person on the bike. The only thing we really can say is that no matter what sub-culture of riding you do, we all love riding period. For whatever the reason a person rides, suddenly they take on a new look, a new style - a new persona. And from the outside looking in, it is like nobody knows who you are - to them you are just a biker. But the fact remains; you may be a lawyer, a teacher, an accountant, a sales person. No matter who you are or where you are from, everyone who rides not only “enjoys the ride” but taps into that side of themselves; unmasking a layer of themselves that is only known to them and is acknowledged by the wave of fellow bikers. A wave that signifies a brotherhood, a subculture, a mystique and a persona that is recognized and shared all over the world.

Experience, the Ultimate Teacher Well, we all know spring is just around the corner and with warmer temps we will all be itching to get out for our first rides of the season. One of the things I like most about the spring conditions in Ontario are the cooler temps which force us all to dress properly when we ride. Now, I don’t mean dress properly for just the low temperature, I am referring to the ride itself. Temperature often dictates how we as riders dress while out for either a day’s ride or a quick trip down Main Street. The problem with this phenomenon is that the warmer it gets, the less some riders will tend to wear. I was reminded the other night about the realities of little to no protection against abrasion while watching an episode on television. Some teenager was being towed down a suburban street behind a car on rollerbades wearing little more than a pair of shorts, sufice to say, the clip ended the moment he or she lost control and made contact with the pavement. Ouch! That’s gotta hurt. A little over four years ago my son had just got his M2 and proceeded to buy a motorcycle well beyond his skill level. Before you start, yes, I explained about the learning curve and how speed can kill and all that great advice we all give to our kids. And the thing of it is, it’s all true, there’s no conspiricy to stop our kids from having a bit of fun, it’s just some good advice. So, one sunny summer afternoon, I get a call at work telling me to rush home, my son has been in an accident. Fearing the worst, I make it home to find my son’s upperbody, hip and calves covered in fresh road rash. I immediatly rush him to the hospital, all the while, as tough as he is, the pain he is experiencing is clearly evident in his face. As usual with our health care system we are invited to wait our turn. By now, the bleeding has stopped and I get a first hand look

at his wounds, shallow in some places, bone exposed in others, but covered and embedded deeply with whatever was on the road when he made contact with it. After a grueling wait, a nurse begins to attend to his wounds, an injection for pain in the most severe areas and little more than a topical analgesic for the rest which when applied produced blood curdling screams with each application. Unfortunatly, this is the start of the treatment, as the analgesic begins to take some of the sting away, the wounds are cleaned as good as possible, leaving behind in some places souveniers to be carried around forever. The wounds were wrapped and he was released. The thing with road rash is it reminds you everyday for the rest of your life, what an idiot you were. But do we all have to learn the hard way? I hope not. For decades manufacturers have been improving on the clothes we wear when we ride, our government mandates certain safety items be worn like helmets to protect our mellons, and publications and media like this one continually express the dangers associated with not wearing the proper gear. Abrasion is one of those injuries we all can easily avoid by employing just a little common sense. Obviously something is better than nothing, but understanding and respecting the fact that your unprotected flesh abraids at a rate of one inch depth for every second of distance you slide at 50 kph should have you thinking twice about what you are wearing. I am not suggesting full racing leathers be the solution, just use your head before you ride and ride with appropriate protection. The great thing about all of this is that experience is a great teacher, once you have experienced road rash, you’ll agree that it’s better to sweat than bleed.

Learn from the experts and live to ride another day.

It’s not cool to be a dead biker. Use your head and always wear appropriate gear, protective eyewear and an approved helmet.
