Zero Motorcycles, North America’s biggest electric motorcycle manufacturer, has announced a recall/buy-back program on all S, DPS and DS models from 2012.

Asphalt & Rubber reports the move comes in the wake of three separate fires involving Zero motorcycles from 2012, two in the US and one in Hong Kong. The fires appear to have been caused by a defective battery pack, and Zero is recalling all motorcycles from 2012 with that battery design.

This is one case where low sales numbers might turn out to be a good thing, as A&R reports despite recalling three models, Zero only has to buy back 218 machines—the whole production run of S, DPS and DS models didn’t add up to much that year. A&R says Zero says the batteries are not completely sealed from humidity, making corrosion a problem, and they’re also designed in such a way that the individual cells are able to move around inside the battery, eventually shorting out due to chafing.

Zero is offering to replace all the 2012 models with a brand-new Zero, if that’s what the customer wants.

We haven’t seen any information on a Canadian recall yet, but if any of those models were sold here in 2012, they’ll presumably fall under the buyback program.

At the basis of this many-sided strategic plan is the implementation, in the short term, of ARAS (Advanced Rider Assistance Systems) on Ducati motorcycles. Advanced assistance systems in-

crease rider safety levels via a number of sensors, including radars. These, in particular, are able to provide feedback on the surrounding environment - helping to prevent possible collisions with obstacles or other vehicles by alerting the rider.

The Joy of Two Wheels For longer than I care to remember, I have spent it on two wheels of one kind or another. During my youth, I would spend countless hours riding my coaster style cycle. The bike I most fondly remember was made by CCM, it was metallic lime green with ape hanger handlebars, a short chrome stubby fender, a fat rear tire with a chrome kicked-up fender, a black banana seat with a short chrome sissy bar and it had a name that to me conjured up images of the baddest muscle cars of the day, it was the Mustang. It had one gear ratio, which made your leg muscles burn when going up any hill and to stop, simply back peddling would cause some magical mechanical mechanism to engage a brake to the rear wheel. This braking system was reliable when you needed to stop, but stopping wasn’t its best quality, making skid marks all over our neighbourhood parking lots and sidewalks was. If you had enough speed you could lock up the rear tire and by turning the handlebars, shifting your weight just right you could put enough english on the rear end to make a great looking skid mark and end up facing the opposite direction and looking cool in front of all your friends, all at the same time.

Much to my dads’ displeasure, it would seem like him and I were always heading down to the local Canadian Tire for another

brand new rear tire. On the way home I’d get the standard lecture about how money doesn’t grow on trees and how I don’t appreciate the value of a dollar otherwise I wouldn’t wear out my rear tires so often.

Once we got home, my dad and I would have that rear tire switched out faster than a seasoned Nascar pit crew at the Daytona 500. After washing up, I’d be out the door with my Mustang. Running along side it, I would throw my leg over the banana seat and off on a new adventure, while my dads’ voice could be heard shouting “…and no more skidding”. Thinking back I was trying to remember what the ratio of rear tire to fronts was, but I really can’t recall ever needing to change the front rubber.

Fast forward to the day I bought my first motorcycle, I had married my sweetheart, and our son was in high school, it was time for me to get back to having some fun on two wheels again. Looking back, my first motorcycle for some unconscious reason had many of the same characteristics as my CCM Mustang. It was a 1997 Yamaha Virago with a 750 cc displacement V twin. We looked at a lot of bikes at local dealers, but when the sales guy showed me the barely used Virago, I knew it was the one. It had the same raked our front end similar to my Mustangs forks, ape hanger handlebars, a stubby chrome front fender, a fat rear tire

with a kicked up fender, the closest thing to a banana seat and a short stubby sissy bar. The only thing missing was the metallic lime green paint job. It took me no time to get my license to be able to ride and for the first summer, I spent what seemed like every waking hour learning the handling characteristics and practicing everything I was taught at the safety course.

I put a lot of kilometers on that bike over the years that I owned it. Since then, I have had a number of bikes that I have enjoyed riding but none so thrilling, fun as my first.

My current ride is a beautiful Harley-Davidson Fatboy with more chrome on it than I have time to polish, it is a real pleasure to ride, it has enough power to keep a permanent smile on my face throughout the summer. Best of all I can quickly transform it into a two-up ride when my wife chooses to come along for a ride with me like we used to enjoy. But that Mustang is always in the back of my head when I throw my leg over my bike and twist the throttle to head out on some new adventure.

I wonder, if I had the right amount of speed, turned the handlebars just so, shifted my weight, could I put just enough english on the rear end… LOL. Have another great season of riding and remember… no more skidding!

Alberta allows Sikhs to drive motorcycles without helmets

Canada’s Alberta province, which has the third largest population of Sikhs after British Columbia and Ontario, will allow turban-wearing Sikhs to drive motorcycles without a helmet from April 12.

British Columbia and Manitoba already allow Sikhs to drive motorcycles without helmets.

Alberta’s transportation minister Brian Mason said on Thursday that the exemp-

tion was granted at the request of the Sikh community as recognition of their civil rights and religious expression. The exemption applies to drivers and passengers over the age of 18 who are Sikhs.

“Our government is committed to these principles,” Mason said.

As per the 2011 census, there are 52,335 Sikhs in Alberta.

Baltej Singh Dhillon, who became the first Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) officer with a turban, welcomed Alberta’s decision.

In a statement, he said: “The decision by the government of Alberta to allow Sikhs to be able to ride their motorcycles without having to remove their turbans, which is an integral part of the Sikh identity, demonstrates a deep respect for the

traditions and customs of the Sikh community.”

“This exemption is a testament to the government of Alberta’s continued commitment to respecting diversity and religious rights of all Albertans.”

Gurpeet Pandher from the Sikh Motorcycle Club of Edmonton called the announcement a “milestone and memorable day” in Alberta’s history.

Alberta, B.C. and Manitoba all have exemptions The Sikh Motorcycle Club of Ontario said the province should follow Alberta and other provinces in allowing turbanwearing Sikhs to ride motorcycles without helmets.

The exemption to Alberta’s Traffic Safety Act will apply to adult motorcycle drivers and passengers is to go into effect on April 12th.

The decision makes Alberta the third province to make the exemption after British Columbia and Manitoba.

Private member’s bills to exempt Sikh motorcyclists were introduced in Ontario by former New Democrat MPP Jagmeet Singh in 2013 and 2016, but the rules in the province haven’t changed.

Harley-Davidson recalls 175,000 motorcycles due to brake failure Harley-Davidson has recalled 175,000 motorcycles in the U.S and 250,000 worldwide to fix an issue that can potentially cause brakes to fail suddenly. It will cost the company $29.4 million according to USA Today.

“This condition is associated with delayed or neglected brake fluid maintenance as specified in the owner’s manual,” Carolyn Duranowski, director of marketing at Oakland Harley-Davidson, told The Pioneer. “Harley-Davidson is offering the remedy fluid flush free of charge to all motorcycles within the recall population, regardless of their maintenance history.”

The motorcycles recalled range from the 2008 to 2011 Touring, CVO Touring and VRSC models which have anti-lock braking systems. They can be brought in to dealerships for recall service starting Feb. 12, according to Harley-Davidson.

Many Touring bike models, intended for long distance riding, are listed in the recall and are equipped with anti-lock braking systems.

Anti-lock braking system (ABS) uses standard brake components but adds in an ABS module and sensors, according to a Harley-Davidson anti-lock brake system

The ABS module and added sensors work like a computer. When a brake is applied, the pressure is evenly distributed to both front and rear calipers. The module works to apply braking power evenly and help keep the motorcycle upright in emergency braking situations.

Locking can happen in non-ABS motorcycles. If the rear wheel locks up, it can swing out from the rider. If the front wheel is locked, then balance and steering control may be lost, according to Harley-Davidson.

Suzuki experienced a similar recall in 2013. In their case, the brake fluid could lead to corrosion which could compromise the brakes. Suzuki offered to flush and add new brake fluid along with replacing master cylinders on the affected motorcycles with a redesigned part according to a Suzuki recall notice.

In June of 2017, Harley-Davidson issued another recall on over 57,000 Touring motorcycles due to oil leaks that could possibly cause crashes. The improperly installed clamps on the oil cooling system could cause an oil line to detach, and it could lead to oil on the rear tire. That may result in loss of vecontrol and increase the risk of a crash.

Riders To Mark 12th International Female Ride Day

Women motorcycle riders from across the world are expected to hit the roads on May 5, 2018, to mark the 12th edition of the International Female Ride Day (IFRD). The day will be marked and promoted to encourage female riders of all ages, and all brands of motorcycles to go on a motorcycle ride - either on or off-road, with a solo ride, a group ride, or with a few friends. The 12th edition of the IFRD will host celebrations by renowned women’s motorcycle clubs, foundations, associations and individuals all taking to their choice of motorcycles to support IFRD’s global action for women in motorsport.

This year, the IFRD is expected to be celebrated across the world with weekend events, day events, off-road days, track days and national promotions in support of the first Saturday in May. Riding in unison, women riders will represent their country, culture and region. The 12th IFRD is expected to be celebrated across Canada, USA, Iceland,

India, Australia, South Africa, Brazil, Caribbean, England, Germany, The Netherlands, Czech Republic, Hungary, Russia, Japan, China, and Israel, among other countries.

Husqvarna Announces 2019 Mini-Moto Lineup

The 2018 spring riding season is barely started, but Husqvarna has already announced its 2019 mini motocross lineup, with three bikes in this year’s range.

All three bikes are liquid-cooled two-strokes, with kickstarter and disc brakes front and rear, with steel or chrome-moly steel frame.

The TC50 is the most entry-level of these bikes, with a centrifugal clutch for easy shifting and WP suspension (!), featuring 205 mm of travel up front (35 mm WP AER forks, air-adjustable) and 185 mm of travel in the rear. The rear subframe is steel. Dry weight is 41.5 kg.

The TC65 has a larger motor with manual six-speed transmission and hydraulic clutch. The TC65 has 35 mm AER forks as well, but with 215 mm of travel (also air-adjustable), and 270 mm of travel in rear. Rear subframe is alu-

minum; dry weight is 53 kg.

The TC85 has WP’s AER 43 forks, with adjustable compression via forktop clickers and air pump. Add in a fully-adjustable XPlor PDS rear shock (also by WP), and you’ve got pretty legit suspension for a mini-MXer; as is becoming common in more advanced dirt bikes, the TC85’s forks have a split design, with damping oil in one leg and air in the other. Husky also included a self-cleaning gear selector and footpegs that are also supposed to prevent crud from building up.. This bike is available in 17-14 or 19-16 wheel sizes, depending what size your MX-riding offspring needs. The rear subframe is aluminum, dry weight is 67 or 68 kg, depending which wheel size you get (the 19-16 bike weighs more due to larger wheels).

We haven’t seen an official MSRP yet, but the bikes will be available at Husky dealers in June.

There are dozens of factors that influence any particular industry, and the motorcycle market is no different. While companies like Ducati have found success in offering smaller, more affordable bikes, there are unfortunately a number of elements that appear to be out of the control of OEMs. That’s according to Bernstein Research, a leading quantitative analysis company in the US and Euro markets. Recently Bernstein released analysis attempting to explain why millennials are 30 to 40 percent less interested in motorcycles as the previous generation.

Bernstein found that as baby boomers “age out” of riding, today’s young adults aren’t picking up the slack needed to keep the industry afloat. Not even as they enter what Bernstein calls “one of the two prime life stages for motorcycling: the pre-family stage.” Today’s “young millennials”, which Bernstein calls adults born between 1990 and 2000, are one-third less likely to ride motorcycles as Gen-Xers were at this phase in their lives. However, Bernstein points to a number of factors that go beyond “millennials don’t like bikes”.

Student debt is one major driving factor according to the analysis firm. Because more of today’s young adults have college degrees, they also have more student debt.

In 1990 only 50 percent of college students borrowed funds, with the average total borrowings amounting to $15,000. Compare this to 2012 where 70 percent of undergrads had taken out loans, which averaged over $25,000. When compared to baby boomers, the average millennial has nearly double the student debt (during the “pre-

family life stage”). Gen-Xers had around $2k per person, as where millennials have over $3.5K. “That may not sound like a large enough increase in debt to sway one from buying a motorcycle,” said David Beckel, who led the analysis for the study. “But for the individual 20 million millennials with student debt, the difference between $15,000 and $26,000 of student debt is $130/month, which is equivalent to a monthly loan payment on a ~$8,000 bike.”

Today’s young riders aren’t interested in big expensive bikes. The team also points to the more affordable used bike market when explaining why new bike sales are down. The team at Bernstein also theorized another interesting claim; stating that they don’t think millennials feel the same need to rebel as the generation that came before them. Millennials are getting married, buying houses, and having kids at markedly later stages in their lives than baby boomers did.

“If you aren’t getting married, chances

are you are not thinking about having children any time soon, and therefore the need to ‘rebel’ against the inevitable onslaught of permanent responsibility is lower,” explained Beckel.

Bernstein thinks a solution to the student debt problem could be to sell bikes through new business models that don’t rely on loans to purchase bikes.

“Instead of loans being the primary means of financing, try leases, or, experiment with some of the concepts embodied by the sharing economy,” Bernstein suggested, referring to motorcycle sharing services like Twisted Road and RidersShare.

Ultimately one major issue is that Bernstein feels millennials are just flat out less interested in motorcycle culture.

Dirt bikes—which often serve as gateways into riding—aren’t very popular among kids today, that enthusiasm is not being handed down, and even Hollywood doesn’t glamorize riding the way it once did. Hopefully something changes soon.

passiton Hands On Investing In Our Youth In this era of tech, “Google it” and “call someone who knows,” our youth are not learning basic hands on skills to be self sufficient in life. Changing a light bulb or a tire on the car are tasks the up and coming generation see as a foreign language. Simple household maintenance or repairs are left to the trades as our society becomes more lax. These skills are not being handed down as in previous generations.

Growing up with two brothers and no

We started with the tear down and assessment of what we actually had to work with. She dove right in building her own bike. Scraping and cleaning parts with an understanding of how components worked. My best memory was suiting her up in oversized coveralls with a face shield, safety glasses, ear plugs, gloves, and a few wraps of duct tape to sand blast the spokes and hubs on the rims.

Together we machined all new bushings on the lathe for the wheels and swing arm. Showing her how to do the set up and make the cut, I would stand

father to guide us, we became our own teachers. Tearing everything apart to see how it worked and building it back up like new. Everything was a challenge, we took the challenges head on and beat it. There were always bicycles in various stages of repair or pieces scattered around the back yard. Eventually our passion grew into motorcycles and cars.

We built some nice machines together… those were some of my best days ever growing up.

Being blessed with two girls of my own did not deter me from passing on my knowledge and skills. When my girls were very young we would head out to the garage and build Barbie furniture together. Using scraps of wood, a few finishing nails and some stapled on fabric, it made playing Barbie’s so much more fun. Yes, I played Barbie’s! To this day my girls are very comfortable to head to the garage get a drill or hammer and nails to hang a picture in their room or fix the door latch. They are always involved in any home renovation projects and their skill is inpressive. Their design input has been inspirational too.

When my youngest daughter Clara was 8, I brought home a basket case 1979 YZ 80 to spark her interest. Purchasing the bike for $50 with the engine in pieces wrapped in a garbage bag, seemed

close enough to the kill switch if things went south. Clara nailed it every time!

Making her first bike user friendly, I decided to use a 4hp 4 stroke engine donated from a new generator with a centrifugal clutch. No gears, just twist the throttle and go. Both brakes on the handle bars to keep things simple. New brake shoes were available from the dealer and all bearings were supplied by Motion Canada. Control cables were custom made and we designed a seat with a gentle saddle for comfort.

Getting technical Clara and I designed a primary gearing system to accommodate the offset from engine to rear wheel.

An idler shaft mounted behind the engine using pillow block bearings and a drive reduction system to obtain final drive ratio. At some point Clara lost me in the mathematics, her words were “we just need to go bigger on this sprocket!”

Final drive is 12 to 1…thanks Clara.

Putting a finished look on the YZ was exciting as all the form following function was out of the way. Custom steel fenders were fabricated from 4” S shaped pipe cut on a sectional plane following the shape of the tires giving it a low rider look. ics came natural to Clara, being precise with a tape measure to make it look uniform. We used yellow VHT caliber paint containing ceramic for durability in the spokes and hubs. The frame was powder coated.

Clara’s first ride on her new bike brought tears to my eyes. The sense of joy and accomplishment was overwhelming. In a flat oval gravel parking lot, Clara rode like a natural doing lap after lap. After a couple months of practice rides and building up some skill and confidence we hit the trails. Mud holes and hills with loose rock were a challenge Clara

My advice to Clara was “if you know you are going down let the bike go and

not only to keep your machine in tiptop shape, but for safety as well.

After 3 seasons of riding Clara developed confidence and skills that were impressive. It eased up on my sense of nervousness and apprehension when following her through the trails. Often talking to myself out loud for her to go easy or give it some throttle to get it through the mud.

You don’t want to see your child get hurt, dirt bikes are an easy way to do just that. Clara did clip a tree with her handle bar and the bike went down hard sending her tumbling over the bars. By the time I got stopped she was on her feet trying to pick her bike up, of course hitting the kill

switch first. Time for a physical check to see if all body parts still work! She was fine with only a minor bruised thigh from the handle bar. Her words were “that was fun” my words “maybe for you!” Falling down is a part of riding and learning how to fall minimizing injury can be done.

Getting back on and continuing to ride is something Clara has always done without hesitation.

She eventually outgrew her little YZ custom and there was a need to upgrade.

I looked at used bikes that for the most part were all beat into the ground. The last thing I wanted was a bike breaking down out on the trails or having to re-build every weekend. I decided to sell one of my

antique customs and use the money to buy Clara a brand new 2017 KLX 140L. It was tough to let a bike go after 30 years but the reward of seeing Clara on a new bike was far more rewarding. The look on her face when she saw the bike in the driveway was priceless.

Now it was time to learn how to use a clutch, shift gears and use a foot brake.

Clara made this transition look effortless and in one afternoon had the concept down. She was ready to hit the trails after a few practice sessions of stopping, starting and shifting up and down.

With a full season on the KLX under her belt, Clara has found her speed. At times I find myself pushing it to keep up

on the trails. She signed up for a week long camp this summer at Durham Moto Park. If she ever decides to get her licence and ride on the street someday, she will be well prepared with knowledge and experience. It may be time to start looking for an old CB 350 to start the next restoration project.

As a parent I believe not only is it my duty, but a privilege to install my children with my values, knowledge and aspirations. Taking the time to share my knowledge and skills with my daughter has payed off in countless ways. Investing in our youth and handing down life skills will benefit all. My favourite words to hear are “dad can we go dirt biking?”

Taken For Granted Not unlike many people, I tend to take some things for granted. I assume that, when I go to bed at night, I will still be alive in the morning. Although – if I woke up dead – it wouldn’t really be a problem.

At least not for me.

I take for granted there will be electricity when I turn on my coffee grinder in the morning; that water will gush from my household taps and that my furnace will provide heat when I need it. I don’t spend much time wondering how all this happens. I assume that my bike’s gas gauge will indicate when it needs more fuel.

I head out onto roads believing that – 99.9% of the time – other riders and drivers will remain in their designated lanes; lanes that I also trust will be there when I need them. I have also been known to take some people and their influence for granted. ‘He’ is one of those people.

He was one of eleven children. He lived in the same house for 84 of his 86 years – cared for by a maiden or widowed sister. He never married; he never had any children. He quit school when he was 13 years old and went to work as a labourer in a cloth mill. And then he quit. He took courses in shorthand and bookkeeping but did not maintain jobs in those fields.

He apprenticed as a ‘wire drawer’ but the wages were so low, he quit. He took on a series of unskilled jobs in engineering shops – and quit all of those jobs. A carpet manufacturer also employed him for a short period of time.

Wikipedia and British newspapers described him as “eccentric”. He removed the carpets, curtains and most of the furniture in his house and operated four televisions at once although none with volume. He said he did that so his visiting friends would not fight over which channel to watch. He liked to smoke a pipe.

Despite his quirks and propensity to flit from job to job, when he died in September 1976, he owned a Rolls-Royce Phantom, had been awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) and had amassed today’s equivalent of $1.4M Cdn. Bernard Ingham (Margaret Thatcher’s longserving chief press secretary) included him in his 2005 book of the 50 greatest people of Yorkshire. In 2006, the newspaper in his hometown ran a competition to decide the most famous person of the region. He was the clear winner. And although his name is not well-recognized, his influence is apparent in the United Kingdom, the US, Canada, Ireland, most of continental Europe, Hong Kong, New Zealand and Lebanon.

So . . . who was ‘he’ and what did he do to acquire such widespread impact?

His name was Percy Shaw and he born on the 15 of April 1890 in Halifax, Yorkshire, England. And although his resume, on the surface, suggests he was a young man without direction, his back story suggests something much different. He did work in many fields. But he was also very bright and absorbed a lot while he was working in those areas. While employed at a carpet factory, he developed

a method of adhering rubber to the underside of carpet; a precursor to today’s foam-backed carpets. Mistakenly, the company did not follow up on his idea.

Although he never married, he was very family-oriented. He quit school at 13 because one of his siblings was getting married and leaving home. Percy wanted to ensure his family had sufficient income-earners, so he left school and became a member of the workforce.

By 1916 he was able to buy his first vehicle – a bicycle. A rare event at that time.

He and two of his friends rode to London and back – a trip of about 240 miles - on his first holiday. Soon after, he bought the first of several motorbikes and a Model T. He was always tinkering, always fixing, always looking at things a bit differently in search of better ways to do things.

Developing a faster and less labour-intensive way to lay asphalt was one of the improvements Shaw developed. It was during this part of his life that his trajectory changed and a new course for was set.

Driving home late one night after travelling the area drumming up contracts for his asphalt business, Percy Shaw had an epiphany. The actual event is unclear – several stories abound and Shaw never confirmed any of them. Some print sources suggest it was his brother, Cecil, who actually ‘promoted’ the stories.

Nevertheless, Percy was driving home one night on a familiar but dangerous stretch of road made more unsafe because the tramlines had been hauled out to be repaired. Until that night, his car headlights glinting off the tramlines had provided an indication of where the road was located. This version of the story suggests that Shaw, peering into the dark night looking for the roadway, was distracted slightly by the flash of two cat’s eyes on the side of the road. It was the spark that would eventually lead to the increased safety along roads around the world when Percy Shaw invented what is known in transportation circles as “raised pavement markers” or more commonly “Cat’s Eyes”.

It is so easy to take those little road devices for granted – especially on a sunny day riding on familiar highways. But every riding day is not one of sunshine and blue skies. I have only to think back to a late day ride through the Blue Ridge Mountains; crashes of thunder booming around us, bolts of lightning temporarily blinding us and an oily spray spewing from what seemed like hundreds of transport trucks competing for ‘our’ space on those winding roads and I make a point of thanking James Shaw and Esther Hannah Morrell for having at least one of their eleven children.

Percy Shaw was not the first person to consider ‘reflective pavement markers” but – as is so often true – he was the first to patent them, market them aggressively and start a manufacturing company to build them. Thank you Percy Shaw! May drivers and riders never take your “Cat’s Eyes” for granted.

Wyoming

By Dawn Edmond Until today, I thought it was mountains and bodies of water that beguiled me.

Not surprisingly, I was under Colorado’s spell at first sight, seduced quickly by its snowy-peaks and lakes. I enjoyed riding the mountain twisties, scaring the hell out of myself careening around hairpin turns devoid of guardrails. (Actually, I didn’t need to scare the hell out of myself; the guy in the black pick-up truck coming around a blind curve on my side of the road did that for me.)

Riding in Colorado is akin to riding a roller coaster. Moments of gasping in fearful excitement followed quickly by howls of relief. This type of riding requires vigilance to avoid other drivers, wildlife, falling (not ‘fallen’) rock and the edge. But even adrenaline rushes become blase in time. After crossing the mountains four or five times, the novelty of it wore thin.

Riding in Wyoming was much different. It lacks the tight curves, but the big sweeps through its hills made me feel

like I was floating through the air. And the sky. That big sky. The kind of sky that eludes capture by camera. The kind of sky that, from the valley floor, allows you to see forever; and from the hilltops, lets you see forever and a day. I realized my svengali was not the mountains and the water – it’s the sky.

Wyoming is where the buffalo roam

and the deer & the antelope (pronghorn, actually) still play. It is where ranchers understand what ‘free range’ really is; grazing without fences for hundreds of acres.

Riding CR215 between Albin and Pine Bluffs, I had tears rolling down my cheeks from the quiet magnitude of Wyoming. The air, fresh and clear, with

a whisper of sweetness from the fields of yellow clover. Rolling hills. Wide open spaces nestled between distant mountains. Hillsides peppered with black Angus cattle. Outcroppings of rock as old as the earth herself.

Until today, I thought I had to die to get to heaven. All I had to do was find Wyoming.

Body Work

By David Heron The saga continues. The piston ring compressor arrived and it was Friday night. I was sitting having a drink with the LSW as we are in the habit of doing and I was thinking about how I would finally get the pistons in the Honda engine and get the engine all back together.

I had been stalled by the stupid little oil rings long enough but now had the proper tools to defeat my enemy squiggly rings. My phone dinged and a text came in from a bike friend who was looking to get out of the City and away from some life problems. He was inviting himself up to our place and, being the conniving type that I am, I realized that piston ring help could be attained at the cost of one of my rib barbeques and maybe some beer. Since I love to make and eat ribs, I am sad to say that I jumped at the chance. I was able to convince myself that a distraction for my Bud would help his spirits immensely and certainly the spinoff would be a buttoned up engine for my project. And, that is exactly what transpired. My new ring compressor sort of worked but we ended up with me watching and holding the cylinder barrels while our guest pressed the stupid little oil rings in with a tiny screwdriver. Success was attained with a minimum of curse words. Well, from me anyway. I can’t really say the same for my friend. He did say that the oil rings were so small on this engine that they were almost impossible to put in even with the help of the compressor.

We finished off the afternoon with a futile stab at an electrical problem with my Holy Grail Kawasaki. I at least, was able to console myself with the knowledge that everything he tried and every test

he did, I had already tried. I wonder if I have mentioned before that I really do hate electrics.

The next day my friend left early and I spent the day finishing the assembly of the engine. Remembering to put gaskets on. Feeding the overhead cam chain through the centre of the head, connecting it and figuring out which gasket and plate went where. I had the chain all together and went to the parts fiche to see which order the gaskets and plates went in. As I studied the order, I saw the warning to not forget to install the 2 O-rings on the forward head bolts. Of course then I had to take it all apart and install those two dumb O-rings and then feed the cam chain through again and put the gaskets in place in the proper order. Anyway, it was finally done and I was ready to proceed.

I knew that I was tired of waiting for months for a paint job from the guy who has done every other bike for me and I thought to myself that , “How hard is it to paint a tank and side covers?” A piece of cake, or so I had convinced myself.

The fenders had been chromed at some point but were rusted and pitted. Originally, these bikes came with grey painted fenders and side covers. So, I went to my trusty wire wheel and scraped most of the chrome away. The side covers had about six layers of paint but the wire wheel made quick work of them too. On one of my trips to Canadian Tire, I found what I thought would be my body work secret weapon. Filler Primer. I did a quick test of one part that I had cleaned up with the wire wheel and it seemed to work beautifully. It filled in the scratches so away I went bought more primer and paint. I brought a part to the store and found a very close match to the grey shade I was looking to do.

Now, I had to wait for the next weekend to commence painting. I made ar-

rangements with my friend at the local garage to borrow his premises to paint.

I lamented the fact that work always seems to get in the way of my projects.

I avoid admitting to myself that if it wasn’t for work I wouldn’t be able to pay for these projects. Such are the disadvantages of not being born rich. Anyway, I set up all the parts on boxes and laid down my drop sheets so as not to paint his dirty floor and had at it. A couple coats of primer and then a few coats of grey. And then, the agony of realizing that my paint job looked like crap.

There were scratches showing and dents showing and then the scolding from the LSW that my job sucked and I had better fix it right away. So I was off to Canadian Tire again for a bunch of different grade

I went back to the garage and used the filler primer again and the results were very satisfactory. All that damn sanding was really worthwhile. The grey looked really good and we both were happy with my job this time. Chalk that sanding thing as a lesson learned. Now, on to the next lesson. The gas tank was in good shape and I sanded and filled it too. It took the red paint that I had painted the frame with nicely and looked good. I figured that since it would be the most visible thing that I would try a clear coat on it. Well, it certainly did look great with

sandpaper and more paint. And, oh yes, a severe scolding for putting body filler on in the house. I have to admit that it smells worse than carb cleaner or paint.

Luckily, we have a sheltered back porch and the sun was warm so I spent the better part of 4 hours filling, sanding, filling again and sanding more. My fingertips

I am really getting tired and sore from kicking myself. But I look at it this way, next time I will know better.

again arranging to use the garage and plying the garage owner with a bottle of rye, I was loading the frame and grey parts back in the car for the short trip up to the garage. Of course, after more than a week, it was necessary to do a 2000 grit sanding of the whole thing in preparation for the clear coat. Everything went smoothly which doesn’t happen too often and everything looked far better with the deep shine of clear coat on it.

Now, I must comment on the modern rattle can paints from Dupli Color. These things are amazing especially when you have done your proper prep work. You lay down a coat and can recoat ten minutes later. You can do a whole paint job with primer and paint in an afternoon.

There is no waiting around for hours or even days waiting for the paint to dry. I did leave it overnight before clear coating. No sanding in between if you coat in ten minutes either. A real piece of cake.

So, here we are with the frame now painted and clear coated. The tank and side covers are done along with the forks and headlight. That leaves the engine. I made the decision to wait to paint that until it was assembled. With camshafts and inlets and various other holes, there was too much to plug up, tape or cover. As I said earlier, the engine is together. Now, what I didn’t factor in was the weight of an engine that has all the aforementioned camshafts, valves and the like. Enter the LSW. Together we lifted the completed engine onto a five foot piece of heavy plywood and loaded it into the hatchback. This was done with a minimum of hassle and a complete avoidance of a hernia for either of us. We were off to the garage again to paint it up. I had wire brushed it beforehand. When we arrived at the garage, another guy was there working on a metal owl he was preparing for a lady friend. Much to the relief of the LSW, he came out and helped carry the board into the shop. We placed the board with its engine cargo on the hoist and lifted the whole kit and caboodle up to a convenient working height. As I sprayed, I got to watch the other guy weld and also got to hear about the cheap bars he goes to in order to dance with the ladies that he makes the little owls for.

There is the Legion in Penetang on Sunday afternoon with no cover and the place in Barrie with only a $2.00 cover on Saturday night, and a couple others.

There is never a dull moment at the local garage. While I was killing time between coats of paint, I was also able to check out the progress that my friend, the local mechanic, was making on his cannon. Yes, you are reading that right.

A cannon. This is not just a little toy cannon. This is a full sized 1800’s replica cannon with a carriage and wheels. It will actually fire potatoes from a smaller barrel inside. Once he has fired it off a few times, it will take its place in his yard as a lawn ornament to accompany the various other folk-art pieces he has done such as the metal deer, and snowman and a bunch of other signs. Not only is he a good, and honest, mechanic, he is also an artiste.

Anyway, the painting went off without a hitch and we got the whole thing back to the house the next day with no problems and the house was spared the heavy smell of heat paint too. I was happy. The LSW was happy. And, I am ready for the next step. Things are looking up and more parts are arriving weekly. Things is good…

Italian Exotic with a Demon Streak: If you’ve got the Ducati bug, nothing else will do. We know how it goes. Original American Muscle: Harley’s been making a version of the Sportster since 1957. It’s a logical entry into the American/cruiser/custom scene, and its peanut tank and low-slung look are iconic. Starting in 1986, the Sportster got a new Evolution engine and received a host of updates in 2004, including a rubber mounted engine for reduced vibration. Plus, that rumbly motor’s as bulletproof as a Sherman tank.

Add a set of drag bars and tape-wrapped open pipes and the 883 will look and sound as badass as anything on the street.

Perennial Favorite: The reason Suzuki brought us a new version for 2017 is because the original is so damned good. The term “UJM” (Universal Japanese Motorcycle) is usually sort of derogatory, but we’d apply it to the SV because its appeal and acclaim is universal. From commuters who bungee their lunches to the pillion seat, to racers who upgrade the suspension for trackday bliss, the SV is a sure-fire hit. It’s the kind of bike that’s likely to end up in any enthusiast’s garage at one time or another.

Icon of British Style: If there’s one bike more representative of timeless cool than the Triumph Bonneville, we don’t know it. The ‘60s Bonnie was a favorite of icons like Steve McQueen and Paul Newman.

Need we say more. The new Bonneville, introduced in 2001, is big on ‘60s style, but does more than just play to our nostalgia. It’s a fun, reliable, straightforward motorcycle that gets to the heart of what we love about two wheels. In 2007, all models were boosted from 790cc to 865cc, and in 2009 received fuel injection.

By Nevaeh Tnes The other day, I overheard a woman say she was going out for sushi that evening. Although I’m not a fan of sashimi, I occasionally eat sushi. Contrary to what many people believe, sushi is not raw fish. Sushi is the rice/ vinegar mixture that usually wraps around the filling. The fillings can be cooked or raw vegetables, seafood, fish or fruit. When the filling is raw fish, it is called sashimi. So . . . sashimi is sushi

but sushi is not always sashimi. In any case, I do not eat or discuss sushi or sashimi without thinking about Chuck

and Dnepr motorcycles.

Despite what you may be thinking, Chuck was not the owner of the Dnepr that popped into my mind. The Chuck I am talking about had no interest in motorcycles. And he was only a passenger on a Dnepr once. To top it off, he wasn’t even aware he was riding in the sidecar. He took his one and only ride in the Dnepr when my husband drove him to Purdy Fisheries in Pt Edward, Ontario.

Chuck came to stay at our place because our friends, Sue and Terry, were moving back to British Columbia. They had managed to pack and ship most of what they believed they would need to set up housekeeping in their new place.

Moving was not as monumental a task for Sue as it would have been for many of us. Sue and Terry had relocated so

Neither of us had bags that would accommodate our marine buddy, so we spent about 20 minutes wrapping and strapping Chuck onto the back of my bike.

competent rider. However, lack of opportunity, need or inclination had prevented me from becoming comfortable taking passengers. I had – in a moment of madness – taken a friend of mine on the back of my ‘95 Suzuki Intruder 800 and resolved that would be the last time. I almost went deaf from her shrieking. Chuck, on the other hand, caused me no anxiety. How could he?

Frozen solid and deathly quiet. And what harm could I do to him?

After a short, uneventful trip from Sue and Terry’s to our place, Chuck was at home in our freezer. Well - that’s not exactly true. Chuck did not go directly from his perch on my bike into our freezer. It was REO Speedwagon’s fault, of course. How many times would we have a whole, perfectly still tuna in our house? And a piano close by? We couldn’t resist. Well - that’s not entirely true, either. This half of ‘we’ couldn’t resist.

His photo session completed, Chuck took a dive into our chest freezer. He stayed there for a couple of weeks while we figured out exactly what to do with him. Thawing and cooking him was an option – but he was a big fish. Keeping him in a safe temperature zone while he thawed would be challenging. Cooking him from frozen was not a viable choice either. Our oven and barbecue were both too small to contain him. We tossed around a few more ideas and then decided to contact Purdy Fisheries in Pt Edward to ask if they would thaw and carve him up into more manageable pieces.

Although none of the staff had ever worked on a whole tuna, one of the fish handlers was interested in taking on the project. We arranged a time and day to drop off Chuck.

Invitations went out for what would be Chuck’s last supper. Each invitation was decked out with a photo of Chuck in his REO Speedwagon repose. Not everyone was able to make the party, but everyone commented on Chuck’s invitation. Sue, a master of sauces, worked on developing a selection of dips while I filled in the rest of the meal.

Chuck’s trip from our freezer to the fishery was no less impressive than his former travels. My husband is an ATGATT (All The Gear All The Time) kind of guy and this trip was no exception.

Yes, Chuck was dead, frozen and about to be carved up, but he was afforded all the safety and comfort provided every other passenger. Chuck’s final portrait was taken as he was about to leave on the last leg of this journey; jammed securely into the sidecar of my husband’s 1981 Dnepr sidecar, helmet perched precariously on his stiff little neck and nose.

Chuck, or what was left of Chuck, was returned to us the following week; not in the style to which he had become accustomed, but he was returned. I felt a millisecond of remorse as I transferred Chuck’s edible remains to our fridge. That feeling might have lasted a tad longer if Chuck hadn’t been so delicious. But, in both forms - ‘Sashimi Chuck’ and ‘Sushi Chuck’- he was undeniably deeee-licious and well worth the ride.

By Scott Jackson The cold weather of January and February brings out a different kind of motorcyclist. Today it wasn’t just cold, it was damn cold. Minus 12, and that wasn’t including the wind chill factor. Not a day we street riders would be hitting the pavement that’s for sure. This was however, the perfect weather for the first day of ice racing season. Until whenever the ice thaws, a group of 50 to 60 converted dirt bikes and their families spend Saturdays, on the frozen lakes in Tweed, (an hour and a half east of TO) and Sundays in Bewdley, (an hour east of TO).

Rice Lake is a large but shallow lake, locally well known for its fishing. It’s positioned roughly half way between Port Hope and Peterborough, just off Highway 28. Bewdley is situated on the west shore and is a go to village for bikers during the summer for cold drinks and hot wings.

The club that is well known for involving the whole family. Much of their focus is to ensure a sport in which the entire family can participate, get a great workout and develop relationships with lots of social interaction, with like-minded people. They take pride in the fact that both children and adults often make friendships in that will last a lifetime.

The OCMC (Oshawa Competition Motorcycle Club) was officially founded in 1966 but had its’ beginnings long before that. Having originated as a group of what we might now call, “good old boys,” they competed amongst themselves, in all forms of scooter riding, from high speed flat track, to enduro. At season’s end they would claim an overall champion based on five different disciplines of biking.

Sunday came around and I with my

partner, Phoenix arrived at Bewdley fairly early, and observed a large group of people, bikes and vehicles, all massed on the ice. It took us a couple of driveby’s to find the boat launch that everyone was using to get onto the ice. Phoenix was fairly certain that her Nissan Micra was never going to survive the experience, but relented to my insistence that “it’ll be fine”.

Wandering through the assembly, the machines themselves seemed to be mostly 2 stroke dirt bikes that had studs screwed into the tires in order to grip the ice. The front and rear fenders were also modified to cover more of the spinning buzz saws that are the wheels. I can only imagine making a mistake, and sliding across the ice desperately trying to keep the studs far away, so as to not shred any delicate parts of my carcass.

The race schedule indicated that there were thirteen different races that featured various classes, including engine size, skill level, age and gender. After a drivers meeting that laid out the rules, and the days events, everyone headed

back to their bikes. Some had stowed their bike in the back of a truck and in trailers. A few trailers were outfitted with so many tools, they were more like a motorcycle repair shop on wheels.

The track itself was marked by orange cones which indicated a long twisted route. You could hardly make out the machines competing at the far end of the course. In my mind I imagined that the races would be kinda sluggish. Man, was I surprised. These machines were travelling every bit as fast as they would on dirt, maybe faster. The riders showed no fear. The riders/machines were leaning way over with the handlebars nearing the ice. Some of the more skilled riders were hitting the gas so hard coming out of the corners, that the front wheels were leaving the ice. Wow! Like in all competitions, shit happens, for whatever reason. More than once riders were on the starting line revving the engine, everything ready to fly. The flag drops, and instead of leaping off the line, a bike stalled out. Crap. Fortunately, a quick kick or two usually remedied the setback, and the rider would just have to workthat much harder to catch up with the pack, and their pride. Sometimes though, the machine just won’t restart. That’s one of the big differences from when we fair weather riders have a mechanical issue during the summer months. Warm flesh and frozen metal are not meant to interact. It can be downright painful trying to thread a small fine threaded nut onto a bolt in a tight spot, where even a thin pair of mechanic

gloves won’t fit. Yet patient and resilient fathers were tuning and adjusting bikes throughout the group.

Some kids were young enough that they needed a parent to keep them upright at the starting line, as their feet couldn’t reach the ice. One really small youngster and machine was even motoring around with training wheels! The munchkins were all having a blast. It didn’t seem to matter who won or loss, everyone was smiling after their race. Or were their faces frozen that way?

We didn’t stay to the end of the event.

Around noon, the hotdog stand, located on the ice was starting to smell awfully tasty. However, after being such a good sport about standing for a couple of hours on solid ice in a freezing wind, I graciously asked my girl if she would like to accompany me to Sunday brunch, somewhere local. Preferrably indoors with heat or a cozy fireplace to unthaw.

I’m a romantic like that. After a 15 minute drive, we were seated at the Best Western in Cobourg. I had been there many years before, but in my memory it was something much better than what was on offered now. Things change I guess.

While many of us wait for the winter weather to change, hardier riders than I continue to enjoy two wheels. It sure isn’t something that everyone may want to do, but ice racing is a great diversion on an otherwise boring winter day. The whining engines, the smell of petroleum products, and debris flying off spinning wheels, provided awesome entertainment, and caused visions of the coming warmer riding season. But right now?

Damn it’s bone chilling cold. Can’t wait til April, for some warm weather.
