Canadian Bruce Cook first paraplegic to backflip on a motorcycle Decked out in his bright white, green and blue outfit, his heart pumping and his body strapped to his motorcycle, Bruce Cook goes up the ramp, flips upside down and lands cleanly on the other side. And with that, the 28-year-old sets a new record – becoming the first paraplegic to successfully backflip a motorcycle. The Kelowna, B.C. native completed the feat earlier this month in front of a packed house at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto. “It was great to succeed after failing so badly,” said Cook, recalling how he felt after sticking the landing. Things went very, very badly the last time the freestyle motocross star tried to set a record. The athlete was attempting a record-setting double-front flip on his bike at Copps Coliseum (now named FirstOntario Centre) in Hamilton on Jan. 3, 2014. He went up off the ramp and it looked like he was going to make the record books, but then his bike slammed into the mats and he flew off, landing hard on his back. He reportedly said to the first person who ran over to him: “I can’t feel my legs.” Just a few days later he was in a Hamilton hospital bed and told local media at the time he hoped he would walk again. That was not to be. When he crashed his bike, he broke his T-11 vertebrae and damaged his spinal cord, according to a press release. He went through extensive medical treatments at several facilities, but is now mainly confined to a wheelchair and is paralyzed from the waist down. He has not let this limit what he can do. Days after crashing and falling off his bike he woke up in his hospital bed following surgery and thought: “I’m going to get back on my bike again, you know, like getting back in the saddle again?” Cook recalled. Nine months later he did just that.

Honda updates 2016 crossover lineup Honda redesigned the NC750X and CB500X towards creating a common visual theme for its entire Crossover family. Along with several prototype motorcycles that were unveiled ahead of the Tokyo Moto Show, Honda also announced updates to its Crossover X-models – namely the VFR1200X Crosstourer, NC750X and CB500X. The latter two have undergone a major redesign that will be fully revealed in Tokyo, while its Adventure Touring flagship receives some practical updates. Just one week before the 44th Tokyo
Motor Show opens its doors, Honda continues to drip feed more news on its 2016 model lineup. After the first wave of prototypes, spearheaded by the Neowing tilting three wheeler, and a second batch that included a brand new reincarnation of the Super Cub, now it’s time for some actual production model updates. The NC750X and the CB500X (produced as the 400X for the Japanese market) are two mid-sized Crossover models that have made the best seller lists in many countries, particularly in European mar-
kets. For 2016 both have been redesigned towards creating a common visual theme for the whole Crossover family. Honda chose to disclose only their main technical updates, escorted by a teaser photo of each motorcycle, in anticipation for a full presentation of their new styling in Tokyo. On the other hand, the largest Crossover model in Honda’s lineup, the VFR1200X Crosstourer, is not expected to change much, but will also benefit from some technical upgrades. CONTINUED ON P.03

Honda updates 2016 crossover lineup
Let’s take a closer look at what Honda has disclosed ahead of the full presentation that is expected to take place in Tokyo later this week. The NC model family was introduced in 2012 and made an immediate impact with its undersquare 750 cc twin-cylinder engine that offers extremely economical fuel consumption. Built on a modular base, this family includes the Integra (NC750D), the NC750X and the NC750S naked model. Apart from the fresh looks, the 750X gets a new windscreen that’s taller by 70 mm (2.7 in), LED lights all around and a new exhaust. Meanwhile, the front suspension has gone through a revalving process in search of more linear damping action, while the rear shock absorber has a new preload adjuster. Additionally, the practical trunk that is housed where we usually expect the fuel tank – that’d be in front of the rider – has also been redesigned, growing from 21 to 22 liters of space. Specifically for the DCT version, Honda has added a new set of shifting modes to the mix. When operated in the fully automatic S-mode, the rider can choose between S1, S2 and S3 modes. These differ in how high they allow the engine to rev before upshifting, therefore offering a new level of parameterization to Honda’s innovative DCT gearbox. This update was first announced for the DCT version of the new Africa Twin, and now appears to have filtered down to all the DCT-equipped models. The mid-sized twin CB proved to be a
huge success in Europe, targeting the holders of A2 driving licenses (up to 47 hp / 35 kW) – just as, in similar fashion, the 400X version is produced in Japan for the relevant license category. For 2016, Honda has redesigned it within the same context as the NC750X, forming a uniform Crossover family theme. The CB500X will get both front and back LED lights, a windscreen that’s taller by 100

mm (3.9 in), an adjustable front brake lever and preload adjusters on the fork legs. Honda also announced a re-designed gear selection mechanism that promises a more refined and accurate shifting feel. The largest of Honda’s Crossover models will not change significantly for 2016, but still receives some updates, with the DCT version of the Crosstourer to also get the three shifting modes that have been an-
nounced for the New Africa Twin and the NC750X. Honda has updated the bike’s aerodynamic protection with a brand new windscreen that is easily adjustable – apparently without the need for tools. There’s also the addition of a practical 12 V socket and a new Special Edition two-tone color scheme that’s called Candy Prominence Red and Graphite Black.

Goodbye summer, I miss you already. Here we are once again, the ending of another motorcycle riding season. As the leaves fall from their branches leaving nothing but bare carcasses I am reminded of how much I dislike Canadian winters. I think it’s largely due to the fact that I have nothing to replace my riding with. Some folks turn to skiing or snowmobiling (if you have enough snow all winter) and those things are great, but here in Ontario’s banana belt, the snow tends to be sporadic at best with very little accumulation (knocking on wood) to be able to enjoy most winter activities. I know I can find all the snow I desire just a few hours north of the city, but I really can’t justify that distance for a few hours of recreation, I don’t know how you feel about it, but that’s just me. As I write this column and reflect on a closing riding season, I am reminded about the issues I faced at the start of the season and my battle with symptoms of Carpal Tunnel. Back in March or April, I awoke one morning and couldn’t make a fist, fighting excruciating pain and loss of strength in both hands. Over the course of a couple of months of exercise/ treatments and changing my clutch to a ‘reduced effort’ clutch, I was able to experience another season on two wheels. I think that my riding and using the clutch and brake levers also helped to strengthen and restore much of the flexibility I lost during the off season. As we put this issue together, one story stands out as one of the most exciting to
come down the pike in a long time, at least for me anyway. The product has been around for several years now and we have kept our eye on it’s progress and we thought it was time we gave it a good going over. The folks at REKLUSE provided us with their newest product – the EXP Performance Centrifugal Clutch – engineered for most Harley-Davidson models. This clutch pack replaces the existing setups found on most Harley’s and allows riders to bring their bikes to a complete stop while in gear without requiring the clutch to be pulled in. The advantage to this is that once in gear, the bike can accelerate from a dead stop in either first or second gear and only require the clutch to be used to change up or down from there. For riders who have issues with holding in their clutch for great lengths of time at lights, in heavy stop and go traffic, slow speed riding in parking lots this will change their lives, truly. This is one of the best inventions I have seen and experienced in motorcycling because it truly is useful and beneficial, maybe the best way to describe the Rekluse Clutch is game changing! Give this story a read, it’s a 3 part evaluation over the next 3 issues. Since our riding season is so short, I don’t like to take time from the road to do any wrenching. I tend to wait till the temperatures drop and it’s time to put her away for the winter. So in this issue we have also included some tips for storing your bike over
the winter, if you are not using your local shop for storage. Last but not least, as we say goodbye to this riding season, I am reminded of a few projects that need to be finished before I can put my bike away and start my wrenching season. A few years back my wife and I decided we wanted a more comfortable space for wrenching during the winter, what I really mean is warm and organized. So we closed in our carport, built a work table, a parts area, put up shelves for our gear/misc items, peg boards for my tools (somehow I always need the tool I don’t have), and all in the space of 11’ ft wide x 17’ ft long. Well that’s the organized part done but we still need to do the elctrical, finish the insulation/covering and find an efficent way of heating it. In the mean time, in anticipation of the completion, my thoughts have been wandering to wrenching. I have been eyeing up some parts I would like to have on my bike; like a set of ‘Gangster’ Whitewalls, maybe a set of hard bags, a new engine guard and this new style backrest for the passenger, hmmmm, maybe Santa will let me put some of these things on my wish list – I can only hope. So over the next few months or as I call it ‘wrenching season’ let us know what projects or wrenching you are working on, be it on your bike or your man or woman retreat (since I don’t like cave, it sounds so dreary and dungeon like).

Next generation of iconic Triumph Bonneville motorcycles The Walking Dead - Norman Reedus Stars in Motorcycle TV Series RIDE
The Walking Dead’s Daryl Dixon played by Norman Reedus on screen will be riding his motorcycle to another television series aptly called “Ride with Norman Reedus” on AMC in 2016. You’ve seen him on the popular Walking Dead show riding that sweet Triumph chopper and Classified Moto and looks even better with a crossbow mount. What could be hotter than that? Maybe a documentary series with more motorcycles AND Norman Reedus hosting the show. Norman Reedus is an avid motorcycle rider himself. He will be starring in a nonfiction television series consisting of six episodes, airing for one hour each. The show will feature Reedus with another motorcycle companion as they travel to a different destination each week. Their aim is to explore motorcycle culture in each state that they visit. Reedus, an aficionado himself is thankful for AMC in giving him this opportunity to share his personal passion among fans and maybe a new market or audience. Ree-
dus says he had a lot of fun exploring the show. The docu series is not only going to be about motorcycles, but will also feature a different perspective of Reedus. The audience will get to see his personal side - his ability to make friends anywhere. The show will also feature and celebrate motorcycle collectors, makers, craftsmen and mechanics in the United States. Clearly, Reedus’ motorcycle angle is another exciting venture for AMC. Joel Stillerman, president of original programming and development for AMC, believes that no one is more passionate about motorcycles than Norman Reedus himself and for someone who is quite immersed in motorcycle culture, he is the best person to show the world what they (motorcycle aficionados) live and breathe about. The Walking Dead’s Twitter account even tweeted out that @wwwbigbaldhead (Reedus’ Twitter handle) is getting his own reality show. Ride is targeted to air next year. Follow #RideWithNormanAMC.

Honda recalls 145,000 motorcycles to fix dragging brakes
The recall covers the GL1800 model from 2001 through 2010 and 2012 through 2015. Honda is recalling over 145,000 motorcycles in the US to fix dragging rear brakes that can cause a fire or crash. Documents posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration say it’s the third recall for some of the motorcycles. The recall covers the GL1800 model from 2001 through 2010 and 2012 through 2015.
Also affected are the GL1800A from 2001 through 2005 and the GL1800B from 2013 through 2015. Honda says the brakes can drag after being released by the rider. In 2014, the company had reports of eight small fires. Dealers will replace two brake master cylinders. Some of the bikes were recalled in 2011 and 2014 for the same problem.
British Motorcycle manufacturer, Triumph, has released a new generation of what it calls the ‘most famous name and distinctive silhouette’ in motorcycling: the Triumph Bonneville. In its early years, the Trimph Bonneville inspired a sub-culture of teenage rockers and café racers, drawing attention and turning heads at coffee bars and burn-ups all over the world – becoming the ride of choice for stars and celebrities like Steve McQueen, Clint Eastwood and Bob Dylan. Triumph, in Hinckley, Leicestershire has now unveiled a new generation of Bonneville for a new generation of customisers and riders looking to own a motorcycle icon. The new Triumph Bonneville models are result of a four year project that has resulted in a family of five new motorcycles. With a dedicated chassis and suspension package for each new model, Triumph has said that the new models perform and handle how a truly modern classic should. The new Triumph Bonneville line up The Street Twin is the most contemporary, fun and accessible new Bonneville, powered by an all new high torque 900cc engine. The timeless style and iconic character of the original 1959 model is reborn in the classy and authentic Bonneville T120 and effortless cool Bonneville T120 Black. The
T120 and T120 Black are powered by the allnew Bonneville 1200cc high torque engine. The new 1200cc Thruxton and Thruxton R are modern classic café racers. New Bonneville Engine family The Triumph Bonneville engine family is the new heart of the iconic British twin. Built specifically for the modern classic riding style, each new engine delivers more torque and more immediate power. Triumph has released three new engines: The 900cc high torque engine of the new Street Twin which delivers a peak torque figure of 80Nm at a low 3200 rpm – which is a 18% more than the previous generation and is delivered low down and across the whole rev range. The 1200cc high torque engine of the Bonneville T120 and T120 Black, which produces a peak torque figure of 105Nm at a low 3100 rpm – more than 54% higher than the previous generation T100. The 1200cc high power ‘Thruxton spec’ engine,, which features a peak torque figure of 112Nm at 4950 rpm – 62% higher than the previous generation Thruxton. The unmistakable sound of a British twin According the motorcycle maker, each Triumph Bonneville model has a totally new exhaust system and a unique exhaust note that matches its character, tuned to a level that you can feel and hear.
Meet The Yamaha Motobot: Yamaha is delving into the world of autonomous vehicles in a way befitting the unique company that it is: by building a robot that is capable of learning to pilot a motorcycle better than a human can, but not just any human. The Yamaha Motobot aims to outperform an elite world champion—nine-time MotoGP winner Valentino Rossi, who rode to victory on a Yamaha YZR-M1 this year and who some consider practically superhuman. Yamaha, a Japanese company best known for its motorcycles and musical instruments, billed the Motobot as an “autonomous motorcycle-riding humanoid robot.” The blue, human-shaped machine has a head and stationary appendages that look like arms and legs. It is mounted atop Yamaha’s flagship YZF-R1 motorcycle, looking very much like a professional MotoGP racer crouching low toward the handlebars to accelerate down a racetrack. Yamaha has three decades of expertise in creating robots for industrial applications. Most robots in use today perform a single task with precision beyond what a human can do. Motobot, however, is far more compli-
cated. It must be capable of performing innumerable fine adjustments to control the complex motions of a motorcycle— something that in general humans can do far easier than robots.
Yamaha plans to apply what it learns in building Motobot to improve the products that it makes, which include motorcycles, snowmobiles, ATVs, industrial robots, and more. Yamaha specifies the development of “advanced rider safety systems” as one area that Motobot might be able to help with. While other automakers are focusing their attention on creating vehicles capable of autonomous driving—the IDS being just one example—Yamaha is look-

Motorcycle Leasing
Thanks to Chrome Capital – the nation’s leading lessor of used HarleyDavidson motorcycles – the trend of leasing motorcycles has escalated. Chrome Capital, based on Naples, Fla., will grow even further now due to closing on its first $40M of an $80 million senior credit facility with colenders Alostar Bank of Commerce and Comvest Capital. The proceeds from this close – completed on September 30 – will allow Chrome Capital to retire debt and further expand its motorcycle lease platform to nearly 700 dealers. Chrome Capital says as more consumers choose to lease vehicles, it is positioned to serve dealer demand for additional financing options. “The Alostar and Comvest team, coupled with Chrome’s highly efficient infrastructure, facilitates three core objectives of our business,” said Peter Wasmer, chief executive officer of Chrome Capital. “Help our dealer partners put more riders on more bikes; create natural debt free recurring customers; provide a superior customer service experience to both the dealerships and their customers.” Leasing continues to gain favor as a financing option for personal vehicles, including Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Thirty-one percent of all new vehicle sales were leases in Q2 2015, up from 30.1 percent the previous year, and up from 19 percent in 2007. Brian Cramer, Vice President of Dealer Development for Chrome, said, “The program continues to expand because leasing is additive to dealers’ profits, while matching their customers’ budgets and trade cycles.” Is this an option that we could see coming to Canada in the near future? ing instead at creating an autonomous robot capable of piloting a regular vehicle that has no modifications. The potential for robotic chauffeurs comes to mind. Right now it has six actuators for the steering, throttle, front brake, rear brake, clutch and gearshift pedal. Eventually, the goal is to employ high-precision GPS, various sensors and artificial intelligence—what Yamaha calls “machine learning”—to “enable Motobot to make its own decisions regarding the best lines to take around a racetrack and the limits of the motorcycle’s performance, so that it can improve its lap times with successive laps of the track,” the company says. By the end of this year, Yamaha aims to have Motobot capable of cornering, running a slalom course, and riding in a straight line up to 62 miles per hour. By 2017, it wants Motobot to be able to lap a racetrack at 124 miles per hour or higher and start to develop capabilities that exceed those of a human rider. By 2020, the company hopes to start incorporating technology and learnings from the Motobot project into consumer products. “By using Motobot technologies to optimize control of vehicle dynamics, we will develop higher performing and safer forms of mobility,” Yamaha says.

Realized Dreams I’ve just heard it might SNOW this coming weekend. What?? What’s with this weather? One day is t-shirt worthy and the next day is “Holy crap, where’s my parka”?? Don’t get me wrong, fall is one season that’s a favourite of mine for riding. Thanksgiving Day was a great example. With the crisp weather, changing of the leaves and the growl of the bikes, it was almost therapeutic. It’s such a shame that the white stuff has to cause the start of PMS season once again. Yes…I’m talking about Christmas. Hang on!! Christmas has some good in it. Like PRESENTS!! And the Toy Rides that lead up to the festive holiday. It’s for a great cause after all…kids. That’s what Christmas is all about. So, even though I cringe at just the spoken word of Santa ho-ho when the weather still provides optimal motorcycle trekking, we decided to take our bikes to the Campbellford Toy Ride. It’s a classic car and motorcycle ride put on by a local couple with great support by, you guessed it, Campbellford’s firefighters. We’ve been to so many charity rides this year that one could not be overlooked. Having just moved to the 705 a couple of years ago, we were unaware of this event last year. This being its 3rd year, it had a pretty good turnout. Many classic cars showed their beautiful features, from a ’42 Mercury to my personal favourite, a 1979 trans am. There was a really classy looking, old chevy pick up truck. You could tell it was loved. But who do I see?? Good ol’ Saint Nick himself! Riding a two-toned grey Boulevard. Who woulda thought that this was a travel option for Santa!! Apparently he was leading the ride, can you imagine? As we walked around to look at some of the classic cars and the many, many bikes that took over the Campbellford Canadian Tire parking lot, I noticed quite a few of the Red Knights taking part. Seeing as the firefighters were sponsoring the event, it was nice to see some firefighters riding along with their leathers. Start your engines!!! Holy fuzzknuckles, I gotta get on my bike! While mounting my little therapeutic piece of heaven, we were being instructed on the route, length of ride and the bbq being provided after at the firehall. With a map of the route (and a piece of paper with written directions for the directionally challenged such as myself) we were heading through Warkworth, Roseneath, Hastings, Norwood and through Trent River. The ride would be about two
hours in length, along scenic roads that I must say, we’ve actually never riden before (and we ride almost every weekend and some weeknights), so I was excited. To top off the ride, the firefighters would escort us, lights flashing and all, through town to the firehall for a bbq and prizes. And wouldn’t you know it, the ride was going real close to one of our publication distributors, Motorsports of Trenton. A great group of guys that have been helpful when we’ve needed parts for our Yamahas. Maybe next year they should get involved also. Why are we not stopping there?? So, 10 riders at a time, we made our way through the winding roads, along some waterways, and the sunny weather could not have been any better. Not gonna need my heated vest for this ride. Once we made our way back to Campbellford, the firetruck met us at Thompsons Farm Supply/Tire Shop and we waited for the remaining groups to arrive (remember, groups of ten) and we were heading back. And thank god we stopped cause as you will learn, some of us riders have the bladders of an infant so we were almost breaking in to Thompsons to commandeer their washroom. Some riders were running in… it was kinda funny. Big tough riders, running over each other for the facilities, now that’s a picture in your mind isn’t it?? I will say, it was pretty cool being lead through town with the stop lights being blocked by firetrucks for our arrival. And once we got to the hall, we were met with a wonderful set up of tables right along the water, and some firefighters taking our order for the bbq. With my love of food, it didn’t take me long to make it near the front of the line, getting my burger and hankering down to chat with other participants. Having met a really sweet couple, who were driving the mercury that I mentioned earlier, they talked about how they owned two of these gorgeous pieces of history. Two old, well-maintained mercury automobiles?? Both convertibles to boot!! Now that is why we enjoy these rides, the people! During our pig-out fest, there was a small little shout out of thanks by some of the organizers, prizes awarded (like Canadian tire gift cards and a really cool firefighter baseball cap) and no, I didn’t win nuthin’! All in all, a great day, perfect weather and really wonderful people to meet. Plus, we got to see the trailer full of toys that we were quite happy to contribute to. What could be better? (Maybe a reindeer, but I’ll suggest that for next year’s ride).
So What are you waiting for? 519-725-1262

Quebec
A ride for all the senses. scott (scooter) jackson CONTRIBUTING WRITER
It was the end of July when we packed up GG, my 2002, 1100 Moto Guzzi and decided to get out of Toronto and spend a couple weeks riding through Quebec. Having ridden her since new, I have made her my own through many modifications to her basic cruiser style. Bobbed rear fender, wires in the bars, led tail lights, K & N filters, modified and ceramic exhaust system and many other custom bits add up to make her mine. The ride east on the 401 is boring to say the least. We made the usual compulsory stops for a couple of nights in Montreal and Quebec City. We had the usual compulsory beers and then continued east along the St Lawrence. East of Quebec City, if you keep to the north side of the river on 138, you will eventually come to a stop at the Saguenay River. The free ferry ride will take you across to Tadoussac. Over the years GG has gotten us to Tadoussac several times and we always have a meal at a restaurant which offers a decent buffet. I can’t remember the name of the place, but they are located up the hill and have a great patio overlooking the converging Saguenay and St Lawrence rivers. It’s a good place for a cold beer and/or something to eat. The main buffet food is pretty good, but the dessert offering of three different home-made pies is what we are there for. So if you ever stop in, make sure you save room for the wild blueberry, maple sugar and vinegar pie. Mmmmmm. Or maybe even skip the main course and go straight for the pie.
Everyone has at least heard of, and maybe partaken of the first two, but vinegar pie isn’t so well known outside of Quebec. It definitely has a vinegar taste to it, but the lemony flavour is overpowering. Anyway, it’s the only place I know that offers all three kinds and with a meal included. Apparently when the two rivers merge together they create some kind of “stew” which whales and dolphins can’t resist. They travel in from the Atlantic Ocean and if you book a boat tour you can get pretty close to them. The tour guides take really good care of you; dressing you in waterproof floatation jackets, pants, gloves and boots. We were wishing we could keep some of the gear as it had been raining off and on since we got to Tadoussac. Large “Zodiac” boats speed you out into the St Lawrence and they seem to be in constant radio contact with each other, on the look-out for whales. We spent a couple of hours watching them come up for air and flapping their tails in the water. Also quite a few seals can be seen swimming about. All in – pretty cool. After spending a couple of rainy days camping, eating pie and whale watching in Tadoussac we were looking forward to getting on the Guzzi and heading toward what we hoped would be drier weather. Still lying in the tent we could see that the sun was out and decided to get on the road before any clouds could roll in. We got up and shook the drops off the tent, rolled it up, packed everything in the saddlebags and hit the pavement. As usual, GG never missed a beat and it was great to listen to her steady rumble again. We stayed on the north side of the Sa-
guenay River heading up 172. The pavement was dry in most places, enabling us to enjoy the twists and turns of the road at a sensible but exhilarating speed. In many places the road follows a small beautiful river and the natural beauty makes it difficult to keep your eyes on the road. We spied a couple of bald eagles also following the river, I assume, looking for fish. We sped along with the thick woods always on at least one side. In places, the tree branches reach right out to the road. I can only imagine what this place must look like later in the fall, when all of the foliage has changed from deep green to bright reds, yellows and orange. It’s not that far from home. It might be well worth the cost of a few tanks of supertest to have a look. When you get close to Lac St-Jean you can make a choice of heading left or right around the lake. If you go left, after passing through several smaller towns, you should visit Val-Jalbert. It’s a ghost town which was abandoned in the early 1900’s after the pulp mill closed. Many of the houses are still sort of standing and area locals in period costumes are available to show you through the old hotel, school and other public buildings. Very cool! Ouiatchouan Falls, over 70 metres high, cascades down right beside what’s left of the old mill. A great place for pics. Continuing around the lake we eventually came to the town of Normandin, blueberry capital of the world. Outside of the town there are huge fields of “wild” blueberries run by local co-ops. Even the town street signs are crowned with a large blueberry. It’s at Normandin that we got a
glimpse of what our eventual destination might look like. The Ashuapmushuan River torrents through the town, forcing you to stop, drink it in, and take some pictures. There are plenty of parks with places to sit throughout the town, offering exhilarating views of the white-water. After taking some time to look around and filling up with gas, we ventured a few kilometers outside of the town to arrive at the Chute a l’Ours. We had booked a cottage here before leaving T.O. The cottage we stayed in was built in at least the 60’s and was a little run down but the location - priceless. Less than 100 feet from some of the wildest white-water you have ever seen. Just the noise coming from the rapids ensured that you had to raise your voice when speaking – even in the cottage! The rest of the campground was a mixture of trailers, older cottages and new chalets. There was a pool, and a small depanneur where you could indulge in poutine and similar cuisine. Also there was a large hospitality room where you could BYOB and listen to music, dance and converse with other holidayers. We spent three days hiking the forest, taking in the rapids and picking and eating loads of blueberries. As they say, all good things must end. We had to start moving on. On a brilliant sunny morning we packed everything back onto GG, took a couple of pics of her loaded up beside the river, and piloted the “twistiest” route we could find heading southwest toward La Maurice National Park. You would not believe the bends and turns in that Park, but that’s another story for another time.

What’s in a T Shirt?
Aside from the svelte bodies of us motorcycle riders, it’s the memories that are found inside those T shirts; important memories of places, machinery and friends. That’s what we see in those T shirts. Pleasant reflections are jump started as we pull these T-shirts from the drawer. At the risk of getting way too sentimental, I recently pulled my all-time favourite T shirt out and wham, it all came back to me. It’s a black extra-large with the blood red Excelsior - Henderson “ X “ symbol on the back and a sweeping, angled Excelsior Henderson Motorcycles script in retro yellow across the front. There are two reasons why this particular T shirt is important me: A lovely 1931 Excelsior Henderson - Four belonging to the Ontario Provincial Police museum has been on display in Orillia for years. This bike stopped me in my tracks every time I walked by. Its heavy duty welds, hardware and metal work are stunning, like an over engineered iron trellis bridge, but oozing with grace and style. Regrettably, I have never heard this, or any other Henderson Four running. I imagined what the muffled combustion of those four inline pistons would have sounded like; symphonic but crude and topped off with a distinctive valve clatter maybe? The second reason that I like my Excelsior Henderson T shirt is because of a brief encounter with a man named Sid Coburn. Unlike me, Sid was very familiar with the sound of that in line four. He was a motorcycle mechanic and routinely repaired OPP motorcycles; he worked on Indian, Harley and Henderson patrol bikes. I met Sid in early 1999, when he was 88 years of age. He approached me while I was on uniformed patrol in Caledon. He pulled a letter from his coat pocket and asked if I knew anyone who’d like to have it. Being a history guy and a motorcycle guy, I was taken aback with Sid’s faded letter. It was a hand written, flattering employment reference Sid had received from an OPP Inspector in 1933. Naturally, Sid and I hit it off immediately; this guy was sharp, funny, and full of interesting details about how the OPP riders purchased their own motorcycles in his day. I wanted to get that letter into the hands of the OPP Museum but was determined to take Sid with me knowing that after all these decades a bike he likely worked on was patiently waiting for him inside OPP Headquarters - Orillia Ontario. Coincidentally, a motorcycling resurrection was underway in the mid 1990’s; Excelsior Henderson Motorcycles were being built at this exact time in Belle Plain Minnesota. I wrote a letter to corporate principal Daniel Hanlan, who immediately had his Heritage Guardian - Tim Leary involved. Tim was great, he wanted all the details and sent me some corporate swag for Sid and two Henderson T-shirts for the photo op. On Wed. the 19 February 1999 Sid, Rob and I headed north from The Town of Caledon; goal number one was to get Sid in the
saddle of that bike and it all worked out. We helped Sid gently swing a tired leg over the Henderson. As the cameras clicked away the floodgates of information opened, Sid instantly started recanting tales of his repairs “rear cylinder always ran hot and wore out first – no air flow back there”. The information flow continued as staff took notes and confirmed the information. Sid knew the names of patrol riders, senior OPP staff and criminals from the 1930’s. He recalled major collisions where he retrieved damaged OPP bikes and suspect vehicles, and how he once bump started a model T on a frigid morning by pulling it with a Henderson Four. Current OPP motorcycle mechanic Gregg Patriquin was on hand in the museum to welcome Sid and show him around a few well preserved OPP patrol Harley Davidsons. Gregg also presented Sid with a pair of leather gauntlet riding gloves; these remained laminated to his hands until he finally needed to retrieve his reading glasses while inspecting some old photos. The powerful mental “trigger “effect of sitting on an old motorcycle was startling. In the absence of a clinical explanation it simply seemed magical. I have since come to understand that memory can be divided into three categories: absorption of data – storage – recall. It also seems that a passion like music, sport, or motorcycling can enhance all three categories, so stay engaged in whatever it is that fascinates you. Sid died in 2006, his wife Mary in 2008. His daughter, Lisa latter told me that our trip to the OPP museum was a highlight of his senior years. Mission accomplished. Soon after this museum trip Rob Harris followed up with a nice Wheels article featuring Sid, but there is so much more left behind for those of us you knew Sid even if only briefly: there are detailed records for museum staff, more great photos, wisdom, a better knowledge of prewar motorcycle repair and a couple of powerful T shirts; one is with the Coburn’s and one is with me. Motorcyclists – historians looking for a real treat can stop into the OPP museum and see this motorcycle along with hundreds of other carefully displayed treasures. Thanks to museum staff, Friends of the OPP Museum and volunteer fund raisers the Henderson has since undergone an extensive restoration by “04“ Motors – Parry Sound Ontario. The motorcycle is stunning, and perfectly preserved for decades to come. While working on this story I contacted Tim Leary and Dan Hanlan who explained that although they both remembered the Sid Coburn story, a great deal of the Excelsior Henderson history was regrettably lost as the company doors were shuttered. It’s a good thing the OPP Museum staff and their friends captured the moment. For information on this Henderson and other preserved vehicles and related OPP displays click on opp.ca/museum. So hang onto those T shirts.
We may not want to admit it, but winter is just around the corner. And as the air cools off and the snow starts falling, most of us begrudgingly store our bikes and impatiently wait for spring to ride again. But storing your bike in the winter isn’t as simple as just throwing a cover over it and hopping in the car. In order to keep your motorcycle in top running condition, there is some work that needs to be done before storing it for several months (talk about adding insult to the injury of not being able to ride!) Depending on what kind of motorcycle you ride there may be different things that will need to be addressed, but here is some general wisdom on how get it ready to be stored for the winter. Your main enemy during winter storage is damaging moisture, so most of our winterizing efforts will be aimed at keeping that away from your bike. 1) Surface Prep - Washing your bike when nobody will see it can be a drag, but giving your bike a thorough cleaning before storage is important; letting bug guts or water spots sit on your paint can corrode the finish permanently. Wash your bike and dry it completely to get all the moisture off. Add a coat of wax, which will act as a barrier against moisture and rust. Finally, spray exposed metal surfaces with WD-40 to displace all moisture by putting a protective coating on it. 2) Change Oil/Filter - Change your oil and filter. Its better for your lubrication system to have fresh oil sitting in it for several months
together and run it through your fuel system before storage. 5) Safeguard Battery - Batteries have a tendency to self-discharge when sitting over time, especially when they remain hooked up to the bike. The easiest way to combat this is to hook up a battery tender which uses smart technology to monitor the charge and keep the battery topped off without overcharging. Normally you should pull the battery from the bike for storage, but with a smart tender you can also connect the tender with the battery left in the bike. Before doing this, make sure the electrodes are clean and corrosion free; if necessary, clean them off and give them a light coating of grease. 6) Protect Tires - If your tires are let sit in the same position all winter long, they could develop flat spots. Keeping the tires off of the ground will prevent this, so if you have motorcycle stands, put the bike up on them for storage. If you don’t have stands, try to get at least the rear tire off the ground, or you can rotate your tires by rolling your motorcycle slightly every few weeks. If you need to leave your tires down on concrete, put a piece of carpet or plywood under them to keep any moisture from seeping into them. 7) Check Coolant/Anti-freeze - If you’ll be storing your bike somewhere that gets below freezing, make sure you have adequate levels of anti-freeze in your coolant system. This is very important; if you run straight water in your coolant system and it freezes, you could come back to a cracked head in the spring! 8) Plug Out Pests - Mice and other rodents are notorious for hiding from the cold inside exhaust pipes and making homes out of air filters. If order to avoid any furry surprises when
it’s time to ride again, plug up your pipes with an exhaust plug, check your local motorcycle dealer for availability of this product. You can also simply stuff your air intake and the ends of your exhaust with some plastic bags, but use bright colored bags or tie something to them so you don’t forget take them out when you fire up the bike! 9) Keep it Covered - With your motorcycle fully prepped for winter, invest in a proper motorcycle cover. A quality motorcycle cover will not only keep dust off the bike, but will keep the moisture out so it doesn’t get trapped underneath it and create corrosion or rust. If you’re storing it outside, be sure to get a cover with tie downs to prevent it from blowing loose. If you’re storing it inside you’re in much better shape, but use a cover to prevent dust from building up on it. 10) Theft Protection - If you’re storing your bike outside, bear in mind that being parked unattended for months at a time makes it an easy target for theft. In addition to protecting your bike from weather, using a cover will conceal it from view, and securing it with a heavy lock and chain can give you some peace of mind. If you’ll be storing your bike anywhere it can be accessed by others you may want to consider investing in some additional security measures. With your bike fully prepared for a few months of hibernation, you’ll find that the winter is the perfect time to get done any maintenance or upgrade projects that you’ve had on your mind. You may not be able to ride in the snow, but nothing is stopping you from getting your hands a little greasy and actually starting one of those projects that you’ve been thinking about all season!

Winterize Your Motorcycle
than to have used, broken down oil in it, not to mention the last thing you’ll want to do when riding season begins is change the oil before you can go ride. Using a winter weight oil like 5W30 can help it start up easier come spring. If you’re going to be storing your bike for a long time (4-6 months or more) you will want to protect your engines internals against moisture by coating them lightly with oil. You may not be able to see it with your naked eye, but the cold winter air is perfect for moisture to gather in your engine and cause rust to form on your pistons and cylinder walls. In order to do this, remove the spark plugs and put a little squirt (about a tablespoon) of engine oil into the holes, then turn your engine over a few times to coat the cylinder walls by spinning the rear wheel with the bike in gear. Once everything is coated, replace the plugs. 3) Lube Moving Parts - Keeping moving parts lubed during the winter will help keep moisture from building up on them and causing any rusting or binding. Any part of your motorcycle that needs to be lubed at any point should be lubed again before storage. Some parts to check are: chain drive, cables, controls, fork surfaces, and any other pivot points. 4) Prep Fuel System - Gas tanks have a tendency to rust when not in use, and untreated pump gas breaks down and becomes gummy over time. On your last ride of the season, stop in at the gas station nearest to where you will be storing your bike and add the proper amount of fuel stabilizer, then top off the tank. A full tank will keep moisture from building up on the tank walls, and adding the stabilizer before the short ride home will help mix the gas and stabilizer

I died. It was only for a little while though. Maybe I should expand on this. I still play hockey even at my advanced age. Of course, thinking that it could never happen to me, I glossed over the fact that my older brother had had a heart attack at age 59, but I was in much better shape. I also didn’t bother facing the fact that everything that happens to him happens to me about 3 or 4 years later. Anyway, November 1 , 2011 I had a cardiac arrest on the ice and was dead. Luckily, I was playing with a bunch of fire fighters who revived me with CPR and finally the defibulator paddles. What does this have to do with motorcycles? Nothing, nothing at all. But, it does lead to an interesting story which is, of course, why I am writing here. Anyway, I had a bypass and clutching my heartshaped pillow to my chest, was back home. These little red heart-shaped pillows are made by volunteers at the hospital. When you get up from sitting or lying down, you have to clutch the pillow to your chest with both hands. I guess that this stops your stitches from popping open and your heart falling out in your lap. Now, let’s get to the real story. I have mentioned Kawasaki Triples before. Well, I had found and bought a 1971 Kawasaki 500 H1A the year before. It had resided in a barn for the previous 24 years or so. It was not seized but needed quite a bit of cleaning up which I had done. The engine had good compression so I just cleaned out the stuck rings and put the engine back together again and rode it. I always tell others not to do stuff like that, but to replace and refurbish. Do as I say, not as I do. At any rate, in October the bike had a major heart attack itself while I was riding at speed. At speed is the only way to ride a Kawasaki Triple by the way. When I took the head off the left cylinder, there was a brass hunk of rod bearing sitting on top of the piston. The cylinder wall was Ok but it was obvious that major surgery was required. I put the bike in the garage and got

Then, November 1st came and everything changed. Recovery was fairly quick and within a month I was back to bugging you know who, my long suffering wife. Oh
yes, I almost forgot to mention that while recovering, something crazy went on with my eyes. I was super- sensitive to light to the tune of having to wear sunglasses and a ball cap to sit in the dark beside our
Christmas tree and really couldn’t see too much either. Of course, being the patient guy that I am, I just sat there and accepted these setbacks stoically. NOT. I was whining like a little child and my long suffering wife had, in her opinion, suffered long enough.. She said that it was time to get down in the garage and get back to work on that Kawasaki. Well, either that or let her bind and gag me. The former seemed the best choice rather than suffer from rope burns…. Again. I was supervised closely as I took parts off to make ready to remove the engine from the frame. I was reprimanded a little for getting it out of the frame and onto blocks on the floor by myself. Strategic use of a crowbar made the job easy and my heart still resided in my chest though. Finally , I got to supervise as my son and wife lifted the engine onto the bench for disassembly. Since I love to be a bug, I did have to tell the LSW to lift carefully with her legs and not her back and to be very careful and not drop it. Anyway, the disassembly went without a hitch. I bagged and labelled everything as it came off to be safe. Don’t ask why I know to do this. I really didn’t need extremely sharp vision as I have done this with Kawasaki triple engines so many times that I literally could do it blindfolded. Heads, cylinder barrels, clutch, generator, shifter shaft, don’t forget the oil collector. I split the cases and was ready to remove the crankshaft. As the shop manual says, give a few taps with a rubber mallet and remove the crankshaft. Now, a few more. Then a few more. Now a little harder. Now a little harder than that. Finally, out it came. You know, these things are quite heavy for such a little thing. So, Christmas was coming, I couldn’t see well enough to drive so we, myself and LSW, got into my car with the crankshaft in a recycling bin, loaded in by my son and off we went to New Hamburg Cycle to have it rebuilt. I was not allowed in the front seat yet because of the air bag and my still tender chest so I, and my heart pillow sat in the back seat while she drove. Again, I was able to offer instructive advice as to
A broken piston and now look at her, a real beauty

how and where to drive and how to get to New Hamburg. It was nice to have the shoe on the other foot for just once anyway. The weather was rainy and foggy so the LSW really did need a great deal of advice on safe driving in traffic. No, really… We got out of the car in their lot, me clutching my pillow and her on her own steam. I opened the trunk and she picked up the recycling bin with the heavy crank in it and I reminded her to be very careful and not drop it. I must explain that LSW is a tiny thing, no more than 120 pounds. Being the big help that I am, I held the door open for her and she struggled with the ungainly and heavy bin. Imagine the comments when the guys behind the counter saw me holding the door and her bearing this bin. I had jettisoned the pillow so as not to bring undue suspicion. I do think that they were impressed with the woman and her crankshaft. Incidentally, it is a 3 hour drive from our house to New Hamburg. Back in the car we got and clutching my pillow to my chest, I offered more direction and driving advice for another 3 hours. Being the nice guy that I am, I did stop and buy her a nice lunch. I know, a real Prince. About 3 weeks later, I went alone to pick it up as I was driving myself by then. They did carry it out and put it in the trunk for me though. New seals, bearings and one new rod kit and a few dollars, well more than a few, later we were ready to put it all back together. My eyesight still wasn’t the best so I begged for help from LSW. I got the cases back together along with the sides including generator, clutch etc but ran into a snag with the pistons and cylinders. I couldn’t see well enough to compress the rings and slide the cylinders over the pistons. “ Do I have to get dirty doing this?” “That’s gross”. “ What’s that thing?” “ Do we really need to put these rings in there?” With me squeezing the rings from below and her sliding the barrels down , we made it happen. “ Get your hand out of the way, I can’t see. ” “You put too much oil inside, I’m getting too oily.” “Ok, slide it on.” “ I can’t, your hand is in the way.” It was done. The new engine with new pistons and a re-bore, rebuilt crankshaft, all new seals and gaskets. I polished some cases, painted the heads and cylinders and had a new engine inside and a new looking engine outside. Again, my son and LSW lifted it down to the blocks beside the frame and I again used the crowbar to coax it into its bed and ran the engine bolts through and tightened it up. Now, I just had to wait for the spring. I have since done a bunch of upgrades to this engine and bike. This was what I had in 1972, a 1971 Kawasaki 500 with the much sought after 1970 scalloped tank. Engine hop ups, new bigger carbs, and nice paint job have combined to make this my pride and joy. Now, the advice. If you are going to keep a bike, do the work. I made the mistake of trusting something that had been sitting for over 20 years. I was lucky that the blow up that made this story possible was not more serious. Check the crank. Do the rest of the engine. Check it carefully and replace as necessary. Don’t cut corners, it will come back to bite you in the you know what, the posterior and the wallet. Also, and most importantly, thanks to my wife Debbie who puts up with me and my obsession. I joke about her all in fun. Without her, it would be a much worse life. Plus, I would have no one to offer me direction. Whether I need it or not.

Rossi & Lorenzo’s epic title fight all comes down to this The 2015 MotoGP™ World Championship title fight between Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo is set for an epic conclusion at the Valencia GP. In the 67-year history of the World Championships there have only been 16 previous occasions where the premierclass title has been decided at the final round of the season. In 2015, after one of the most exciting, tense and dramatic seasons ever, Movistar Yamaha teammates and title rivals Rossi (312pts) and Lorenzo (305pts) head to the Gran Premio Motul de la Comunitat Valenciana separated by just seven points. The seven-point advantage Rossi holds is the smallest margin between the top two riders when arriving at the final round of the season since 1992. The Comunitat Valenciana - Ricardo Tormo circuit has played host to an end of season title showdown twice in the past, ever since it became the last round of the season in 2002. In 2006 when Rossi lost out to Nicky Hayden and in 2013 when Marc Marquez lifted the title in his rookie year after a season-long duel with Lorenzo. Surely though, as exciting as they were, not even those can quite match the drama and tension of what has been one of the greatest seasons in the history of the World Championship as it heads to its climax. Rossi has competed at every Valencia GP since its introduction in 1999 and finished on the podium in eight out of 16 attempts, but has only tasted victory twice at the circuit, with the Italian taking backto-back wins in 2003 and 2004. His second placed finish last year was his best result at the track since he achieved the same result in 2009. Lorenzo has stood on the top step of the podium at Valencia twice in the premier class in the last four races he has started at
the track, but has also recorded two DNFs. His only other MotoGP™ podium at the track came when he finished third in the 2009 Valencia GP, but he was forced to miss the 2011 race due to injury. If Lorenzo were to lift the title he would become only the third rider to overturn a points deficit at the final round of the season, along with Wayne Rainey (1992) and Nicky Hayden (2006). The permutations that would see Rossi lift his elusive tenth World Championship title, or Lorenzo make it a hat trick of MotoGP™ crowns, are below. If both riders were to finish on the same points, then Lorenzo would be champion due to the fact he has more wins than Rossi in 2015 (currently Lorenzo has six to Rossi’s four): • If Lorenzo wins the race then Rossi needs to finish second to become world champion. • If Lorenzo finishes second then Rossi needs to finish on the podium to become world champion. • If Lorenzo finishes third then Rossi needs to finish sixth or better to become world champion. • If Lorenzo finishes fourth then Rossi needs to finish ninth or better to become world champion. • If Lorenzo finishes fifth to ninth then Rossi needs to finish no more than six places further back to become world champion. • If Lorenzo finishes lower than ninth then Rossi will be world champion After 17 races, 418 laps and a total of 1988.8km covered, the 2015 MotoGP™ World Championship title fight between Rossi and Lorenzo all comes down to this. Valencia, and a lot of ifs.
Valentino Rossi appeals FIM Stewards’ decision A decision on Rossi’s request for a stay is expected to be issued no later than 6 November 2015. On the basis of Article 3.4.2, para 3 of the FIM Road Racing World Championship Grand Prix Regulations, Mr Valentino Rossi has filed an Appeal against the decision taken by the Race Direction of the Shell Malaysia Motorcycle Grand
Prix in Sepang, penultimate round of the FIM MotoGP Grand Prix World Championship, and confirmed by the FIM Stewards, to award 3 penalty points to Mr Rossi following an incident on Turn 14. In appealing to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), Mr Rossi seeks annulment or reduction of the penalty. He

Hayden: “This is going to be my last ride in MotoGP” Nicky Hayden prepares for the final race of his incredible MotoGP™ World Championship journey. Since joining the MotoGP™ World Championship in 2003, Nicky Hayden has become on of the most recognizable names and faces in the paddock. His career has run through a variety of highs, a World Championship in 2006, as well as several rough patches. Unfortunately the Kentucky Kid’s MotoGP™ adventure has come to a close and the Valencia GP will be his last race before he moves to WorldSBK in 2016. Ahead of the grand prix Hayden will be inducted into the MotoGP™ Hall of Fame
as a MotoGP™ Legend. Nicky Hayden: “Well it’s Valencia, the last race of the season! Valencia is a track I enjoy. It’s kind of small but I really like the atmosphere and the layout. It is a very tough track because you really have to hit your marks and put all of the corners together because each one kind of leads into the next. It’s also a place that holds great memories for me and we know this is going to be my last ride in MotoGP so I am looking forward to trying to have some fun there this weekend. I know it won’t be an easy weekend but I am desperate to leave with a smile and I am looking forward to it very much.”
Viñales: “I’m happy for having taken the Rookie of the Year’
Maverick Viñales looks to end a successful debut season in the premier class with a strong Gran Premio Motul de la Comunitat Valenciana. The last race of the 2015 MotoGP™ World Championship is almost underway and Maverick Viñales heads into his 18th MotoGP™ race having already collected Rookie of the Year. Other riders who have taken the Rookie of the Year title include Jorge Lorenzo, Valentino Rossi and Marc Marquez. It has been an incredibly positive season for the Spanish rider, able to beat his Team Suzuki Ecstar teammate Aleix Espargaro on several occasions and finish the majority of races in the points. Even with these
stellar results, Viñales still left several rounds disappointed that he had been unable to achieve more. Now the Suzuki rider looks for one final strong result in front of his home crowd before testing for the 2016 season begins on Tuesday. One of Viñales’ strongest traits is his ability to quickly learn and adapt to the bike, no doubt Suzuki will be eager to hear his feedback after testing. Maverick Viñales: “For sure I’m happy for having taken the Rookie of the Year title, even if it wasn’t my priority it is a good feeling. with the new class and the new machine; also being a Factory rider in a fully organised Factory team. This has been an amazing experience, I could learn a lot and I feel I still have much to gain, this keeping my ambition always high. The race in Valencia will be important as all the others, we are very close to the 100-points target and not so far from the top 10 in the Championship; it will be hard but it would be a good result after the positive season. I like the circuit, it could also be good for our machine’s layout and the fight will be very interesting. We have developed a way to approach the race that makes me feel comfortable, I like to work hard to prepare for the race and this is basically what we are going to do.”

This is Just the Beginning The Rekluse EXP Centrifugal Clutch
brent (storm) wakeford CONTRIBUTING WRITER
! PRODUCT REVIEW There are constantly new and innovative products coming to the motorcycle market every year. One such product came across my desk recently which raised both my eyebrows. The first thrill of twisting the throttle came for me before I reached ten when my uncle introduced me to a home built Briggs & Stratton 5hp mini bike. He said, “it’s easy, just twist the throttle and go, then pull the brake lever when you want to stop”. It has a centrifugal clutch, so anyone can ride it. I was hooked! The feel of raw power, the wind in my face, the scenery blasting by at the super sonic speed of ten miles per hour. It was cool. Turn a few pages or jump ahead quite a few chapters and I’ve been on two wheels ever since. Throughout the years I’ve logged hundreds of thousands of miles on many styles of bikes--from dirt, race, street and hard tail rigid choppers, right through to my recent comfy couch tourer. But, alas, as I age, I have come to want different things from my actual motorcycle. Sure, the need for performance and speed are still there-but now I want more comforts. So really, what else could be out there to improve the comfortability of my riding experiences? How about an AUTO CLUTCH! Yes, you read it right folks. No more sitting in bumper to bumper traffic or at long lights--holding that clutch lever in or having to pop the transmission into neutral. Al Youngwerth, Founder and Chairman
of Rekluse hit the ground running in 2002 when he introduced a centrifugal clutch for motorcycles. On a traditional motorcycle, you are required to pull in the clutch lever to disengage the transmission, thus allowing you to come to a stop without stalling. When you release the clutch lever and apply poweraway you go. With a centrifugal clutch, you apply power and you just go. Developed originally for the motocross race circuit, this enabled riders after dropping their bikes during the race to just upright it and continue, with no wasted time finding neutral, kick starting, dropping into gear and THEN resuming the race, just twist it and go again. Al’s motto has always been “good enough is not good enough”. So with that-the clutch rEvolution was born. Rekluse clutch set ups are not simply copies of stock components, it has been their inner passion to improve upon and make better. They are a motorcycle industry leader in clutch performance technology & innovation and now they’ve taken it to the streets. Rekluse manufactures performance clutches for motorcycle enthusiasts, both racers and recreational riders, who seek the benefits of performance and enhanced riding comfort. Unlike traditional clutch companies, Rekluse develops auto-clutch technology with a focus on performance. The folks at Rekluse were generous enough to ship a Harley EXP Centrifugal Clutch (cable actuated) unit to The Motorcycle Times so that we might test it out and give our feedback to the motorcycling community. One of the first things we noted with this product was a very detailed instal-
lation manual. As well--the official Rekluse website has an install video on line to use as reference. We found you can almost do this whole install strictly from playing and pausing their video, but it’s always recommended you read the manual first. Obviously you have the option of taking your motorcycle into your mechanic or dealership if you do not feel comfortable doing it yourself or you lack the tools. The Editor and myself elected to do it together to see really how difficult it might be. With the proper tools at hand, the supplied Rekluse instruction manual, my bike’s owner/service manual and the video on the IPad, we began. After draining the primary fluid, removing one floorboard, shifter, primary cover and loosening the clutch cable, it was really simple to follow the play-by-play instructions of removing the stock clutch plates and replacing it with the Rekluse components. One key note I should make here is that you need not alter, modify or change your original stock clutch set-up, which means, if it doesn’t function the way you like or how they say, simply take it out and return your original components back in. The trickiest part of the install came with the addition of the clutch basket clips that slide in. They need to stay in place while installing the clutch plates and sometimes they move a bit obstructing the plate. With the help of dental type picks, we were able to hold the clips in place, sliding each plate past them into the basket. following the instructions, we set the gap, installed a new gasket, (not included) torqued all required bolts, buttoned up the primary, refilled
with fresh fluid (also not included) and set out to check the free play. Rekluse offers a few easy methods to check free play which makes it virtually impossible to not get it right. We chose the hand method as I really wanted to feel the clutch lever move during this procedure. It worked like a charm. Next we warmed up the engine and set out to ride it up and down the road ten times, initially in 1st gear, then in 2nd gear as recommended--checking the free play between runs. It preformed flawlessly. Sitting on the bike with the transmission in either gear and without my hand on the clutch lever, the bike did not pull ahead or move. As soon as I twisted the throttle, the bike pulled away under power of that gear and then applying the brakes--the bike stopped without the clutch and without stalling. Only if my uncle could see me now. It really was amazing. I was able to get on it hard a few times to test how well it performed under load and there was no slip with this clutch whatsoever, she locked right up and sent me blasting down the road as it claimed. Simply put, I think anyone can do this install if they have the manuals and basic automotive tools. On an installation scale of 1 through 5 (5 being most difficult) I rate this install a 3. Check back next month as I’ll follow up with a report after logging some good mileage and putting this Rekluse Clutch through the paces. I can’t wait to get out into rush hour traffic and test it out....Wow, did I really say that?! Visit Rekluse.com more information and a link to a Canadian dealer near you.
