The OPEN ROAD

PROFILE

A shark-nosed touring beast packed with premium tech, luxury, and plenty of street appeal.

Our final tour looked significantly different from the plan…but that’s half the fun of hitting the open road.

Lilu, a Jack Russell Terrier has logged more miles than most riders.

‘Cactus’ Hurt In A Motorcycle Accident

The Legend - Ron Finch by RUTH FINCH Contributing Writer - TMT Ron Finch has been referred to as “The Legend” in the building of custom motorcycles. He started Finch’s Custom Styled Cycles in 1965 in a small building on University Drive

in Pontiac, Michigan. Three years later he married Ruth and together they built the business. In 1972 they moved into a new facility in Auburn Hills, which Ron helped design and build. He used his unlimited imagination to create a unique place where he could meet with, and serve his custom-

Country star Wynonna Judd’s rocker husband has had his left leg amputated after sustaining serious injuries in a weekend motorcycle accident. The accident happened as Judd, 48, and Michael Scott “Cactus” Moser “went for a ride together on separate bikes before her scheduled concert in Deadwood, South Dakota,” according to the statement. “Moser collided with an oncoming vehicle and was transported to a local hospital,” the statement said. “He is being treated for serious but non-life threatening injuries. Wynonna was not involved in the accident.” Judd has postponed several concerts in Canada to stay by the side of her husband, who is also her drummer. The couple married on her Tennessee farm on June 10.

ers. He incorporated his love of metal to add sculpture to the architecture and even create hand made showcases. His uncanny vision for the use of scrap material, led him to use large chunks of scrap glass in the corners of the building, which allowed diffused light to come through, and prompted see page 3

continued from cover some to call the building “Finch Castle”. It was from this location that Ron and his crew worked for almost thirty years building, painting, repairing, and selling parts and accessories. He designed and manufactured such parts as seats, frames, front ends, electrical boxes, mirrors, and taillights for distribution. Ron has a distinctive gift for metal fabrication and engineering. In his desire to accentuate the power and magnificence of the motor, he has been known to relocate the gas tank to the rear fender, the floorboards, or even the saddlebags! His unique construction often includes “one-of-a-kind” front ends, gas tanks, fenders, struts, exhaust systems, primary covers and numerous practical but unique mounting brackets. Ron’s talent doesn’t stop there, he continues his expression of art in his mastery of paint, which has become world renowned for it’s ingenuity and creativity. The custom motorcycles of Ron Finch have been featured in hundreds of magazines, several art museums and in shows throughout this country and in Germany, France, Sweden, and the Netherlands. In spring of 2001, the Home Depot made the Finch family an offer that they couldn’t refuse. They sold their property and moved into semi-retirement. Once again Ron’s imagination would not let him rest. He built a unique studio where he could continue to do his specialty work. Now without the pressure of retail sales, he can focus on custom painting and building customs at his own pace. He began a new venture that he calls METALife, where he can actually bring metal to life in creatures, plants, furniture and almost anything you might imagine! For the studio, he built a deck, a ramp, and a bridge out of “found” metal. Ron takes great pride in his family. He and

Ruth raised four children, three daughters and a son, Caryn, Marc, Gail, and Sara. He hopes to pass on his skill of “dumpster diving” to his three grandsons, Damyon, Matthew and Mason. It was a lesson that he learned as a boy from his father. Ron’s first love is motorcycles. His focus has always been from the perspective of “Art in Motion”. His ability to fuse together me-

the Arts for a tape measure and together they recorded the measurements from a BMW sidecar! The rest is history! When he returned to his studio in Pontiac, Michigan, Finch began constructing the side hack. He manipulated a 30 gal. garbage can to act as a form, and the welding began. He incorporated tools, gears, chains, and a variety of metal stampings to form the web-like open air chariot that would serve as the sidecar. After much research, he constructed a tubular chrome moly rigid frame with a 32” rake and a 4” stretch to house the 100 cu. in. Crazy Horse Motor. At the rear he created a treasure chest to hold a 5 gal. gas tank, a 7 qt. oil tank, the battery, radio and the remaining area to provide packing space. The telescopic front forks are from Ness and the raked trees are from Paughco. He added a Baker transmission, an Evil Engineering belt drive, an S&S carb, and a Jay Brake hydraulic clutch. The Ride Wright Wheels have rubber coated rims and Metzler Tires. Lights, cables, and fasteners were generously provided by PIIA, Barnett, and Gardner-Westcott. Finch completed the project with blends of House of Kolor Shimrin 2 paint over the Galaxy Gray powder coat base done by Q. C. Coating. Two of Ron’s artist friends contributed to the project. Tony Jackson made the unique Winged Woman hood ornament for the sidecar. Robert Shamey crafted the headlight top nut with a miniature likeness of Finch, that Ron calls “Mini Me”! The name “Outsider” definitely describes the “outside of the box” thinking that went into this outrageous Finch creation! A sidecar that gives the passenger the privilege of cruising along just inches above the ground in a handcrafted carriage of metal art!

BRAIN STORM opinions

BRENT WAKEFORD Editor, The Motorcycle Times

Superstitions Many people are superstitious or have idiosyncrasies or just plain do things out of habit or tradition. Riders are no different; in fact, I think we subscribe more into doing things a certain way or out of habit because of what we are, not who. Case in point, many will not purchase, paint or even ride a green Harley-Davidson, not because they don’t like the colour, but because they feel it is bad luck. The legend has it that the Harleys used in World War II were often sitting duck targets, and many military riders got their butts blasted off them. And since they were painted Army green, it eventually translated into modern folklore. Every rider I have known over the years to either buy or paint their bike green, even one buddy that adorned his in a four leaf clover motif; has either crashed or dropped it or had nothing but troubles with the green bike. Hence, I and many won’t go green. Then you get into Road Bells, also called Spirit Bells or as my first one was referred to as; a Gremlin Bell. The legend has changed over the years and most bells now come with some sort of a history or story attached with the origin, but as it was relayed to me, back in the day; the bell was invented by a hippie-biker in the 60’s. Legend has it, that back in the Age of Aquarius, free love and psychedelic pharmaceuticals, a hippy, riding his hog down the highway actually witnessed a small creature (later referred to as a Gremlin, long before the movie) jump from a pothole in the road onto his bike, and immediately his bike broke down. In his drug induced thinking, he devised an idea to hang a bell from the lowest part of the hog that would ring constantly as he rode and annoy the gremlins that jumped aboard, forcing them to fall off, thus eliminating future mechanical failures. Over the years, the story or legend has changed and even added in a clause, that although a bell has powers if purchased by the rider, it is double if received as a gift. There are not too many riders, myself included, who are without a road bell to this day. Although I haven’t seen a gremlin is some time, I still get breakdowns but I am sure I have much less troubles, just knowing I am protected. Superstition maybepeace of mind- definitely. Many riders that I know, have “safe ride” mantras before they depart for a ride,

whether it be around the block or across the country. It doesn’t matter what it is; a prayer, a certain saying, waving the good karma or angels around them procedure etc. If it works for you, go for it. Not all riders attend church yet many have had their bike blessed at a mass bike blessing ceremony just for that extra protection. Some wear biker angel pins, St. Christopher medals, dog tags or carry that special good luck item in their vest, jacket or jeans. We are a strange breed, a select few, some living outside the norm and that’s what make us unique. For example, when we lose a fellow rider to a crash, it is tradition; if you ride solo, to ride the next few rides and funeral with your rear pegs or floorboards down to symbolize in memorial, a rider down, not unlike the air force flying missing man formation. Many motorcycle clubs will take it a step further and ride without helmets during the funeral procession to honour the fallen brother/sister with this freedom salute. If the person was cremated, many will have some or all of their ashes taken on a final ride and thrown in the wind. I personally have a small capsule of my brother Dennis in a velvet bag, hanging inside the saddlebag, so he forever rides with me. Another superstition is the side you mount and dismount your bike from. Some will always get on and off on the left side because it is easier and closer to the ground with the stand down, where as some prefer the right side. Then you have the infamous front fork parking position. Many park with the forks turned in to the left, some out to the right and then there’s the straight ahead position. This one always bugged me when the bike was parked straight. Firstly, I feel the bike has more or less chance of being knocked over or blown over in a high wind, (and yes it can happen) and secondly, it just looks weird, to me. Next, the habit of parking adjacent to the curb on the road vs. angled in the lane. Some think these are just the things people do, but ask your buddies next time they do something out of the norm and you may find, it’s not always out of habit but a superstition, mantra, etc. So, let’s get out there and ride, but don’t forget to pull your ear lobe, twitch your nose, ring your bell and wave the good karma over your bike and keep it safe.

Riders may have to muffle their noisy bikes if a Burlington councillor’s motion for a proposed motorcycle noise bylaw passes there. Apparently Burlington residents have called counsel numerous times to complain motorcycles in their city are clearly louder than they should be. So, Ward 2 Councillor Marianne Meed Ward has taken on the cause to introduce the noise bylaw to her city. She’s hoping council will conduct more research and review bylaws like the ones recently introduced in towns such as Oakville and Caledon that define a decibel standard for bikes to follow. Oakville has not yet enforced the bylaw, meaning no

one has been charged. Many riders modify their motorcycles to create a louder emission of noise to make motorists around them aware of their presence. Many MVA’s that occur between motorcycles and vehicles are blamed on the motorist not seeing the rider. That’s one of the reasons riders change them from the quiet stock mufflers. That said; many riders abuse the increased sound from their pipes by “barking” them at intersections, between buildings and in some residential areas. They are still the minority. Stay tuned as TMT continues to follow this proposed change in Burlington.

Eenie, Meenie, Miney, Mo As a new rider one of the most important things you need to do is decide what type of riding you intend on doing. Is your plan to save fuel and commute to work daily or are you close to retirement and want to travel the country from coast to coast on two wheels? Maybe you want to do a little of both? You had better do your homework and choose wisely, otherwise choosing wrong, can cost you not only a lot of money but hours of discomfort on the wrong bike. There was a time when the selection was limited not only in engine displacement, but in the overall design of the motorcycle. It wasn’t till the late sixties that Harley-Davidson introduced the Electra Glide model with the front “batwing” fairing, and not until almost a decade later would Harley introduce the Tour Glide, and Honda, the Gold Wing. We now take it for granted when we walk into a showroom and find the perfect bike among the dozens of models available from each manufacturer. So what is your pleasure? Today, you can choose a bike that will do many things great or be so specialized in a certain aspect of riding that you will be forced to make a second purchase to accommodate a change in riding style.. Take time to understand the ergonomics of each bike. Remember to take time to notice if you have the ability to flatfoot the bike while at rest, or do you have to tippy toe it? Each of us looses between four and eight inches of height from our inseams due to the way we sit or straddle the bike at a stop. Will you be able to back the bike out of a parking spot by yourself, what about if it’s on an incline? Are your arms slightly bent for more precise control or are you stretched forward and feel as though you are hanging off the bars. If there is a fairing or windshield, are you looking just over it, through it or way above it? A fairing is intended to help direct wind and road debris away from the rider. If the shield is too low, you may need to consider a different helmet to deflect that wind and debris away from your eyes. The seats on each motorcycle are unique to themselves and each rider will fit differently. Your gluteus maximus, upper body mass and seating position have a lot to do with your comfort over long distances travelled. Fortunately, these days, a lot of the things you don’t like about any specific model can usually be altered to fit you properly, lowering kits, new improved saddles, different bars, windshields and fairings can all vastly improve your enjoyment while riding. So lets look at some common styles of bikes. The touring class of motorcycle will typically have an assortment of saddlebags and storage compartments intended to carry your belongings over great distances. It will usually have a full or partial fairing to reduce

fatigue from wind and direct debris and water away from the rider and passenger. In some of the higher-end versions, you will find creature comforts like stereos, cruise control, navigation and rider to rider communication systems. You will also notice that the engine displacement will be some of the largest engines offered by those manufacturers. Touring bikes were never intended as commuters, they are thirsty and will usually be on par with the fuel economy you get with your car or small SUV. But despite the fuel/range issue, these ‘Kings of the Road’ will ensure your comfort from coast to coast. Commuting to and from work or day-tripping/cruising will perhaps include the biggest cross-section of motorcycles. From small displacement to mid and larger v-twins and four cylinder engines, the cruiser is perhaps one of the most common choices of todays rider. You can expect relative comfort over shorter distances with some similar options found in the touring class. You will begin to blur what a touring bike is vs what a cruiser is, as that brands engine displacements increase. I like to think of these types of bikes as ‘crossovers’. With the right accessories, a rider can have his or her bike outfitted similar to the touring bike. Lastly, and I know I am lumping in many bikes into very small categories but, the sport market of motorcycles includes all of high performance race bikes and their naked kin. These bikes do three things exceptionally well; accelerate, brake and corner like no other motorcycle. Don’t expect to take these bikes across the country without experiencing serious discomfort along the way. These bikes are intended for the track, although made street legal with things like horns, signals etc, the ergonomics required to ride these bikes will find your knees cramped and legs and your back bent over forward in a kinda tuck position. Your forearms and wrists will take all your forward torso weight while riding and in order to see you need to lift your head up just to see the road. As fun as these bikes are, and they truly are a blast to ride, the fact remains, unless you intend to take these bikes to the track and run them like they should from time to time, practicality was never a design feature of the sport bike. Although this is a brief overview of the styles of motorcycle available, remember there is a bike that will fit you properly for the task you expect of it. Talk to a salesman and make them show you and allow you to - at the very least – sit on each and every bike you are interested in. If your salesperson seems a little miffed at having to move bikes around go to another dealer, there are many around who are professional and will take the time you require and be able to answer your questions and ensure a proper fit.

Water Buffalo -

Ride With Purpose The international charity ride of grand proportions and grander success. by JEN MURDOCK Contributing Writer - TMT Charity rides have become a very popular means of raising money and awareness for a variety of different causes. We all seem to have our favourite ride, whether its because of the group putting it on, the chosen route, or the cause itself. Bikers are known for helping others in times of need. One such ride is the Water Buffalos - Ride with Purpose. Eight years ago, 4 individuals in the water quality profession who also happened to be motorcycle enthusists discovered they were each riding to varies trade shows and events across North America. There were two from the pacific northwest that called their treks the “Ride with Purpose”, and 2 from Arizona calling themselves the “Water Buffalos”. They decided to combine their efforts and started the Water Buffalos - Ride with Purpose. Their chosen cause can all be traced back to about 20 years ago when a few individuals in leadership positions within the American Water Works Association (AWWA) realized there was a great need for clean safe drinking water and sanitation services in the developing world. They started an organization called Water For People. WFP now operates in 11 program countries, and relies on the support and volunteer efforts of the people in the water profession. Ride with Purpose is a yearly ride that takes the Water Buffalos from wherever they originate to the location of the annual conference of the AWWA. There are now more than 55 Water Buffalos, male and female, and thier backgrounds and ages vary greatly. Their bikes range from fully dressed Harley Davidsons and BMW’s, to sport or adventure bikes. One rider made the trip from Denver to Toronto on a 1959 BSA 650 twin- no luggage, no saddlebags, no windshield. The logistics to planning a ride of this nature, as you can imagine, can be very arduous. On average 24-25 riders leave their home towns from all over North America every year. The riders gradually meet up along the way and the groups keep getting larger. Many sights are seen, and many

roads are travelled by these buffalos. The night before the AWWA conference begins all of the groups meet at a location about an hour away for orientation, an induction ceremony for new members, and to exchange stories and pictures of the roads that brought them together. The morning of the conference finds the Water Buffalos riding into town as a herd and arrive at the AWWA to a very warm welcome. Originally the AWWA was less than thrilled with the idea of a bunch of “bikers” coming to their conference on motorcycles. Now after 7 years, when the Water Buffalos arrive in the host city, the “bikers” are invited to the AWWA board meeting to report on that year’s ride, participation and success. A Water Buffalo vest now guarantees admission to social events and programs held during the conference. In 2007 the first Canadian Water Buffalo, Don Hoekstra founded the Ontario Chapter and was the local host for his first Ride With Purpose when the AWWA conference was held in Toronto. Since then he has ridden to Atlanta in 2008, San Diego in 2009, Chicago in 2010, Washington DC in 2011, and this year was Dallas Texas. He raises money through both corporate and individual sponsorship, and has personally raised approximately $15,000 to date for Water for People. Each year the Water Buffalos raise between $50-80,000, and the total funds contributed to date by this amazing group of riders for Water for People is over $350,000! The stories that come out of these rides about the people they’ve met, the sights they’ve seen, and the roads they’ve travelled are priceless. But even more important are the lives they are changing in the communities they are helping through Water for People. Many of the Water Buffalos work with Water for People in some way through their professional abilities all year round. This ride is one way to bring two of their passions together for a greater purpose, a Ride with Purpose. You can find out more about the ride at www.ridewithpurpose.org You can see the amazing work being done with WFP at www.waterforpeople. org

Bike tour through Morocc an eye opening experience By Heather Walters

J

oanne and Rob Perttula of Simcoe have taken their Harley on several road trips, across Northern Ontario, throughout parts of Canada and across a good many of the states. When a friend casually mentioned an interesting tour was being organized through the North African country of Morocco, they decided to contact a UK motorcycle tour company called Motocadia and literally the wheels were set in motion for a ride they would never forget. Morocco is on the continent of Africa, officially the Kingdom of Morocco, Al Maghrib. A population of nearly 44 million, its coast reaches from the Atlantic Ocean, past the Straits of Gibraltar and into the Mediterranean. It has international borders with Algeria, Spain and Mauritania to the south. Their journey began in Malaga, Spain where they collected their tour bikes, met their follow tour riders, and prepared to ferry across to Ceuta, Morocco. Rob said that the first thing they had

to get used to was the bike itself – a BMW instead of their familiar Harley. Once they got a feel for that, they were off. This type of tour is not for the novice rider – rather, it is called “spirited riding,” for those with considerable experience as both the terrain and culture provided exciting challenges. Joanne talked about the first real cultural experience they came across, as soon as they disembarked from the ferry. Although the border crossing paperwork had already been arranged for by the tour, each of the many border guards took their turns “helping expedite the process” with an open hand and obvious bribe. Luckily, they had already been instructed to carry only small bills in their wallets, and “to never, ever, give up your passport!” It was also strange and slightly unsettling to both Canadians to witness so many armed troops with machine guns patrolling the area, but they passed through without incident and the adventure began. Each day of the two week tour, they travelled a good distance – between 250 and 300 miles. Rob stated that between the

Joy and Care of Tattoos Although tattoos are synonymous with bikers/riders, it isn’t a mandatory requirement as part of your motorcycling lifestyle. It should be something you desire, not feel you must have. Getting body art should be an expression of who you are, have meaning, depth, a look into your soul or in memory or appreciation of things in your life, to name a few reasons. That said, if you are so inclined, there are a few things to take into consideration before getting inked and feeling the vibration and the sting of the needle against your skin for the first time. First and foremost, pick the location of your tat wisely. Keep in mind if you are in a professional field, a large snake wrapping around your neck and up onto you face may deter you from being hired, advancing or getting sales. It’s just a fact. Location, location, location. Next, start by checking out numerous artists/studios. Many tattoo artists come highly recommended and are respected in the industry for good reason. They use high quality inks, equipment, safety practices and have a steady hand and keen eye. Their lines should be smooth, not jumpy or jagged or shaky. Colors should be bold and filled in completely with no blank areas. Circles should look like circles, not ovals. Be objective! You can view their work by their photo galleries on–line, at their shop with full colour album portfolios and obviously in person by seeing their work on people’s bodies. It should be noted, not all artists will let you sit in their shop and observe a client getting ink, due to health/hygiene and privacy concerns, so don’t expect to just walk in off the street and be able to watch an inking in progress. Schedule a gab session with your artist and ask questions. Make sure your artist uses an autoclave, which is essentially a pressure cooker primarily used in the medical field for sterilizing medical instruments. Make sure the tattoo machine and clip cord is covered with plastic. Make sure the artist is wearing gloves. Ask about what training has been taken and completed. Are certificates available? Is the artist vaccinated for Hepatitis B? Always ask to see examples of the artist’s finished work. Depending on where on your body the tattoo is going to be located; is the chair curtained off or in a private room if you are the shy type? Check out the shop for good lighting and cleanliness. Remember, this process is breaking open many layers of skin on your body and germs/bacteria will cause infection. If the artist does their craft in a dim lit shop, with a smoke hanging out of their mouth and bourbon on the table; run!

Now, you have your fresh new tattoo, and you want to take good care of it! It is very important that you follow these guidelines. A really beautiful tattoo can turn into a disaster if the proper aftercare is not taken. Leave That Bandage Alone! Your artist covered up your new tattoo for a very good reason - to keep air-born bacteria from invading your wound. Yes, as pretty as your new tattoo is, it is still a wound. Leave the bandage on for a minimum of two hours. Excitement of having a new tattoo will make you want to remove the bandage so you can show your friends, but your friends will just have to wait until later. Covering the new tat with plastic is no longer recommended. You’re better off not having any covering than to be suffocating your new tattoo with plastic wrap. After you remove the bandage, use lukewarm water and mild, liquid antibacterial or antimicrobial soap to gently wash away any ointment and/or blood to completely clean the area. Do not use a washcloth or anything abrasive. Your hand is your best tool in this case. Then pat (do not rub) the area firmly with a CLEAN towel to get it completely dry. Follow with a very light application of your choice of ointment. A&D vitamin enriched ointment is a good choice, but if you don’t have any, antibacterial ointment is acceptable. Do not use Neosporin. This is a wonderful product for cuts and scrapes, but not for tattoos. You can shower with a new tattoo. It’s OK to get your tattoo wet - just don’t soak it. Submerging your tattoo in a bath or hot tub, pool, fresh water or salt water can cause serious damage, so you’ll want to avoid those for 2-3 weeks. If you get soap or shampoo on your tattoo, just remove it quickly with water. After a few days, you will notice some peeling and possibly a little scabbing. Apply warm moist compresses to the scabs for about 5 minutes 2-3 times a day to soften them and they will eventually come off on their own, then you should apply ointment to ONLY a dry tattoo. You may also start to itch, just like a sunburn when it begins to heal. Don’t pick, and don’t scratch! If it is peeling, put lotion on it-if it is scabbing, just leave it alone. Your tattoo is almost healed, and now is not the time to ruin it! After your tattoo is healed, from now on, you will always want to protect it from the sun’s ultraviolet rays. These can fade and damage a brilliant tattoo very fast. Before spending a lot of time in the hot sun, protect your tattoo with a minimum 30SPF sunblock. This will keep your tattoo vibrant for many years, and it will continue to be a source of great pride.

The Road Less Travelled The Annual“Once-In-A-Lifetime”Road Trip

by BLAKE MERRITT Contributing Writer - TMT Every year a friend and I head off on our motorcycles for what we call our annual “oncein-a-lifetime” road trip. At least that’s how I always sold it to get the ok to go. As you can imagine this usually brings on the appropriate “ya, uh huh” response from my family. I’m apparently that transparent (so my patient wife tells me anyway). So off we go…one week, two guys, warm June weather, and an unspoken goal to hit as many Waffle Houses as we can find in the continental US. On these trips, two things are certain: 1) we go to great lengths to plan out where we want to go and what we want to see, and 2) we rarely stick to the plan. There are a number of reasons that we go off route; avoiding bad weather, trying to make up lost time, or something shiny catches our attention (we are men after all). Unfortunately this has also resulted in us missing out on some riding areas that could be considered the local Mecca of motorcyclists and road enthusiasts.

The “Plan”

This year we decided the theme to our trip should be the road less (and in fact for us, “not”) traveled. Our goal was to try and ride a number of routes that for various reasons we had missed on other trips and to do it using state/back roads as much as possible. Even with our trip mapped out and the GPS loaded, our final tour looked significantly different from the plan…but that’s half the fun of taking off on the open road. We did have one goal that was non-negotiable however…to ride the “Tail of the Dragon” in the southern Appalachian Mountains. That was a must. Given the time we had available, we hustled south to Nashville,TN. From there we took a more leisurely approach east to the Tail of the Dragon, continuing on through back

roads to the east coast, north across the Chesapeake Bay and then back home through the mountains of eastern Pennsylvania. The trip didn’t disappoint. We managed to get into the most scenic country going through a number of small towns with fantastic restaurants and quiet motorcycle-friendly hotels. During our tour we met riders that gave us some great recommendations on other sites/routes to take, and we altered our plans to take as much of it in as we could.

Twisting by the Pool in Nashville

Our trip began with an experience almost too good to be true. After a day and a half of interstate riding we pulled into Nashville. The temperatures for that area in mid June were topping out in the 35 - 39oC range and it was as sticky as they come. We pulled into a hotel, just a random choice, and found that sometimes you just luck into situations that you just couldn’t plan any better. The gathering around the hotel pool was the type of material that Budweiser commercials are made from. As people continued to check in through the early afternoon, more and more folks gathered around the pool. The scene was set: a large group of friends from Alabama all gathered in one corner, Harley riders from Mississippi on the other side, folks coming in from all over, getting together, sharing some drinks and having a good time by the pool. In the middle of all this was a band from Memphis staying at the hotel that showed up poolside with their acoustic guitars and bongo drum. They had had the crowd laughing, dancing, and singing in short order. Everyone mixed and mingled, and one thing was proven again to be a universal constant...get a couple of drinks in people, play some good music and everyone likes to sing along with the band. Not a bad way to spend your time in the hot summer sun.

Grabbing the Dragon by the Tail

After a bit of a late start the next day, we began our bikers “pilgrimage” toward the Tail of the Dragon. An hour east of Nashville, we left the I40, and for a greater part of the remaining trip, interstates in general. Heading east on state roads gave us a welcome change of pace from what we’d experienced the whole ride so far. Quiet roads, little traffic and lots to take in and see. If you’ve not ridden the Dragon, you’re missing out. Riders from all over, including outside of North America, make their way to this part of the Appalachians to ride this road. In an 11 mile stretch on US129 the route boasts 318 curves, some sweeping but many are tight switchback curves, while you make your way up the mountainside toward the Great Smoky National Park. The road has a few pull offs to stop and take in the view from the crest of a mountain, and there are a handful of gas stations, motels and restaurants on either end of the route. Deals Gap is at the eastern end of the route in North Carolina and Punkin Centre (just outside of Maryville, TN) at the western end. Both offer lodging, restaurants and gift shops worth checking out. Even beyond the eastern and western ends of the Dragon there are a number of small “mom and pop” motels and restaurants that really cater to the riding community. Although the road is dominated by riders on all different bikes, that doesn’t mean you’ll miss seeing other types of vehicles along the route. There are Mini owners groups that organize rallies along this road throughout the year, on another stretch we saw a convoy of well over 30 restored and gleaming 40’s era hotrods headed further west. The road has an allure to anyone with a sports or recreational driving passion. There is truly as much of interest to see on the road as in the surrounding area.

A word to the wise while riding the Dragon; keep your eyes to the road, and take it easy the first time. Deals Gap has the “tree of shame” for those that have wrecked their bikes on the route with hundreds of scrap parts attached to the trunk or hanging from the branches. The speed limit is posted as 30 mph for most of the route, but that doesn’t stop the sport bike riders from trying to get their best time on the road, knee to pavement, putting the engine and gears through an extensive workout. Just check your favourite internet search engine for “Tail of the Dragon Photos” and half of them are of people that have gone off the road. Respect the road and the speed limit (the State Troopers run a tight ship in the area too), and you’ll be fine. We rode through fully loaded with all our gear and still had an entirely memorable ride. Don’t forget to smile as you round each bend...there a few local photographers such as Killboy.com that will snap off a few quality pictures of you as you come around the corner then post it on the web for purchase at a later date.

Riding into the Clouds

Just beyond the Tail of the Dragon is another route worth exploring. The Cherohala Skyway is a state road that runs from Tellico Plains, TN to Robbinsville, NC. If you’re east riding along the Dragon, take the 129 to Robbinsville and turn west on Route 143 back into Tennessee. This road runs along the top of the Appalachian Mountains and has a number of wide sweeping curves, amazing overlooks with panoramas of the forest for miles in all directions, and the quiet peaceful nature that comes from a well maintained road in the middle of nowhere. Riders we met that gave us the tip said they preferred this route to the Dragon, and I’d have to say I agree. Local restaurants and souvenir shops offer maps of circle routes and day trips on the area roads that put the Dragon and the Cherohala together in

Is this Mayberry?

Leaving the incredible mountain riding behind was hard to do, but it was time to head to the east coast. We passed through a number of towns on the way east, but one in particular that stands out was Mount Airy, NC. Turns out Mount Airy was the childhood home to Andy Griffith and reportedly the inspiration for the community of Mayberry and the location of the Andy Griffith show (yes I’m dating myself). You can’t help but see the town has gone to great lengths to preserve the look and feel of this early Smalltown, USA era, even if there are a few modern roadside blemishes like large billboard signs for Aunt Bea’s diner or Floyd’s Barber shop. On our way through town we passed a couple old Ford Galaxie Mayberry Police Cars that for a fee will take you around the city for a tour.

one enjoyable day of riding. We had made our “base camp” for this part of the tour in Bryson City, NC about a 20 minute ride from the base of the Dragon. In town we found the Ridge Top Motel which is a clean (albeit dated), functional and inexpensive motel that’s run by a nice family with a real aim to please the riding crowd. They have your standard amenities such as clean rooms, laundry facilities, and an outdoor pool, but they also offer the facilities to wash your bike and add a few little extras that make the stay worthwhile. It rained through the night we stayed, but in the morning we came out to see towels the owner had placed on our seats to soak up the water before we rode out. Little details like that explain why the large percentage of people staying there were on two or three wheels.

Virginia Back Roads Riding

Our journey to the east coast was via some of the most scenic and well maintained roads I’ve had the privilege to ride. SR 58 in Virginia runs just north of the North Carolina border and has even more small towns, new pavement, greasy spoons, and open air with very little traffic. After a relaxing days ride, we made it into Norfolk, VA with impeccable timing of course…right into rush hour traffic. Hot and humid was an understatement. Hoping for some relief from a breeze off of the Atlantic, we quickly headed out north on the US13 toward the Chesapeake Bay Bridge/Tunnel (CBBT) combination to make our way to the Virginia Eastern Shores. The CBBT is actually a combination of three bridges and two tunnels, complete with a viewing area and visitor centre, gift shop and restaurant built out in the bay, right on the bridge before you enter the first tunnel. It’s a great spot to pull over and check out the commercial container ships and naval fleet moving in and out of the bay.

Winding Down in (and through) the Pennsylvania Mountains

The trip back from the Eastern Shores took us through the mountains of eastern Pennsylvania. I’ve ridden those roads so often now that it’s like coming home. The winding roads carry you through the mountain valleys and over the crests offering impressive views of the surrounding landscape. The cool breeze was more than welcome after a week’s worth of riding in the hot and humid temps. If you’re looking for a nice alternative to interstate travel to make your way north/south through PA, Highway 15 is the road to take. Much of it is four lanes, and reportedly is going to be a future Interstate, but for the time being, the ride is nice and traffic is typically light. In what seems now like a blink of the eye, we were home again. Not bad for a week’s worth of riding, and another successful week in the saddle. Interstates can be a good ride, and convenient to get where you’re going. I’m not going to say I don’t smile while I’m hustling along at 120 km/h leaned over in a wide curve. Trust me though; back roads riding…it’s not just for weekends anymore.

Lacombe wins, Szoke clinches at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park BOWMANVILLE, Ont. (August 25, 2012) – Kevin Lacombe took his first Mopar Canadian Superbike Championship win of the season at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park on Saturday, but with a second place finish Jordan Szoke clinched an eighth national Superbike crown. Lacombe, Szoke and Alex Welsh staged a thrilling battle for the win in the 20-lap race around the 3.9km (2.459-mile) circuit, with Lacombe taking the win on his Team Couturier Racing BMW S1000RR by just 0.118 secs. from the Waznie Racing / Parts Canada / BMW Motorrad Canada BMW S1000RR of Szoke with Welsh just half a second behind on his AW7R / Kenwood Electronics Canada Suzuki GSX-R1000. The result gives Szoke 252 points in the Mopar Canadian Superbike Championship standings to the 193 of Lacombe with Sunday’s season finale still to run. But with a maximum of 52 points available in Sunday’s race the Brantford, Ont. racer is assured of the Canadian title. “What an honour it is to win this trophy again,” said Szoke, as he was presented with the Canada Cup. “Sometimes I feel like I want it more than anybody. I’ve been so much more involved with everything this year, running my own team, that I think this one is extra special.”

Lacombe started from pole position and led most of the way in the 20-lap race. He only ceded the top spot to Szoke for two laps and Welsh for one. The St-Cesaire, Que. rider completed the race distance in 27 minutes, 36.716 seconds for an average speed of 169.492km/h (101.695 mph). “I had nothing to lose,” said Lacombe after scoring his first national Superbike race win since 2006. “I had a great bike from qualifying and I knew we’d be right there for the race. It’s been a tough year but to end the season like this is a good feeling.” The win moved Lacombe into a solid second in the Mopar Canadian Superbike Championship standings going into Sunday’s last round, 21 points ahead of Andrew Nelson, who finished fourth on Saturday. Szoke was on Lacombe’s tail from the start and the two initially pulled clear of the rest of the field before Welsh was able to make his way up to the lead duo. The new champion acknowledged he was racing with the points battle in the back of his mind. “I was being so careful,” Szoke acknowledged. “I thought I would let Kevin do some work early on and hope he pulled us away from the pack. But then when Alex got up there I didn’t want to get pushed too far back, so that forced me to ride hard the whole race.”

AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 Series Recap DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (August 28, 2012) - The Indy GP weekend was a chance for the AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 Series to shine on a big stage. With a massive crowd from all over the globe keenly watching, one of the most historic venues in the world hosting, a $50,000 weekend purse on the line, and the $60,000 XR Showdown finally underway, there was no way there wasn’t going to be fireworks at Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the doubleheader. Saturday’s opening leg ended in dramatic fashion. Skillful youngster P.J. Jacbosen, a former class race winner and AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike podium finisher now racing in Europe, made a one-off Vance & Hines XR1200 Series return at Indy riding for

the MOB Racing/K Tech/Orient Express/ Moroney’s outfit. He immediately made headlines by leaving the class’ established top-three usual suspects in his dust in qualifying, grabbing the pole with a second-anda-half to spare. Jacobsen appeared poised to school the field in the race as well, pulling clear to a four-second advantage after one of the winners of last year’s Indy races Tyler O’Hara (JCR/Srubblade/Bartel’s Harley-Davidson) fell off the chase -- literally -- crashing out of what had developed into a two-man scrap for the lead in the early going. The race was stopped and ultimately called complete due to oil that had been laid down on the course, causing the multi-rider accident in the first place.

Tanner Ward receiving his Factory Ride Award.

Steven Anderson of Hillsburgh, ON, and Tanner Ward of Bright, ON both received Factory Rides at the Walton TransCan Amateur Motorcross Nationals on Aug 14-19. Ward was initially awarded the prize on Saturday’s award ceremony after the Amateur races had concluded. However, a scoring error was found later and the points were re-calculated. The actual top Yamaha point getter was Steven Anderson. “Unfortunately, there was a miscalculation that was out of our control and we originally awarded the final Factory Ride to Tanner”, said Bryan Hudgin, Marketing Supervisor and Race Director for Yamaha Mo-

tor Canada. Hudgin continued “After meeting Tanner, seeing his excitement and the Ward family’s dedication to Yamaha, I really struggled with the idea of taking the award back. So, we gave out two factory rides this weekend.” Anderson tops in points with a total of 137 racing the MX1, MX2 and MX3 junior classes. The Walton TransCan race week concluded the 2012 Factory Ride Award contest. Four winners across the country have won YZ’s of their choice and collected $2500 in parts and accessories for the 2013 race season.

Bautista’s corner entry woes continue

Unlike the Honda’s of the official Respol Hondas of Casey Stoner and Dani Pedrosa or that of LCR Honda MotoGP’s Stefan Bradl, all kitted out with Ohlins suspension, Bautista’s machine is kitted out with Showa suspension. And it was this area which received all the team’s attention, and that of three Showa technicians for the whole 62 laps the Spainard put in. Bautista finshed the test in sixth, the same position as he had in the race the day before, and was still unhappy with the bike’s frontend feel, sighting a continual lack of trust when turning in. He did however state that the test was not in vain, as the team did find

some positives, which he believes will give them a little boost once they head back out on track for the Misano race on the 16 September. Álvaro Bautista – “During the day we worked a lot because we have had a problem all season, especially on corner entry, as the bike jumps a lot. We were focussing on resolving this problem and tried many many things from Showa, but we didn’t find what we want. On the other hand we found some small details that can help us in the future, but the big problem we have is still not resolved. The team and me put in some hard work today but we didn’t find what we expected.”

Ducati Team at Misano for two days of testing with Rossi Rossi, together with the Italian technicians from his team and the Ducati engineers, worked on the chassis updates that he had first tried in the test after the Mugello Grand Prix. The changes are intended to concentrate the weight of the Desmosedici. With Technical Director Filippo Prezi-

osi and Team Manager Vittoriano Guareschi managing the test from the garage, the Italian rode from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., completing 60 laps. Tomorrow’s second and final day of the test will be followed by a fifteen-day break before a return to action at the same circuit, for the San Marino Grand Prix.

7 DEADLY MISTAKES

We feel this warrants republishing as some riders’ obviously didn’t get a chance to read it. Making mistakes is part of every day life. Everyone makes them. But motorcycle riders can make some deadly one’s. As a beginner or re-entry rider, here are some mistakes to avoid. Avoiding these mistakes will enhance your riding experience and improve your survival odds. All of them are real and all of them can be deadly. Mistake #1: BUYING A MOTORCYCLE BEFORE -This can cost you more than money. Many beginner’s or re-entry riders buy what they want (dream bike), only to find out later that either they can’t ride or it’s not for them. Or they dropped it or something has happened and now they are scared of the bike and it sits in the garage. Wait to purchase a bike till after you have taken a Motorcycle Safety Course. Mistake #2: SKIP THE MOTORCYCLE COURSE -This can cost you more than you think. These courses are taught by professionals who have many years of riding experience under their butts and they are continually upgrading their skills. Their knowledge and skills are taught to you to help make you safer riders on the road. After the course you will have all the necessary skills to get you started as a motorcycle rider. Then it is your job to take the skills taught and practice them. And no they don’t mean in the middle of traffic. Practice the skills taught in a empty parking lot close to home, avoid peak times and high traffic areas. Mistake #3: THINKING YOU ARE A GOOD RIDER -If you were smart enough not to make mistake # 1&2, bet your thinking you passed the course and now away I go. Remember you were taught on a 125 or 250cc motorcycle in a controlled closed environment. You have only been riding a maximum of 90 days. Lets break that down into reality riding (average): 90 days = 2160 hours - 1000 hours (Dusk-Dawn + Sleeping) - 520 hours work (Mon-Fri) - 225 hours miscellaneous stuff (driving to and fro, cooking, kids soccer, the honey do list etc...) = 415 hours which is actually only 17.5 days. You get my point. Take your time and really practice the skills you were taught. Mistake #4: BUYING THE WRONG BIKE -- Peer pressure (friends, family, experienced rid-

ers, brand riders etc...) among other things tend to influence your decision. It’s a myth that you will grow into it, NO you won’t, you’re past puberty; You can handle it, do you really want someone else making that decision for you. Your first motorcycle should be a “starter” motorcycle, 250 to 500cc. It is light weight, easier to handle and less expensive. Keep in mind that you wouldn’t buy your riding jacket 3 sizes too big, so make sure the bike fits you as well. Use the smaller bike to practice your skills. As with everything there is a learning curve. For some it’s faster than others but ride it for at least one full season anyway. After that, you should have enough experience to make an informed purchase. Mistake #5: OUTRIDING YOUR SKILL LEVEL -New riders aren’t even sure what their skill level actually is, let alone when they are out riding it. If you don’t know your skill level, find out but not on the roads. Test the limits of your skills by setting up a small obstacle course in an empty parking lot (closed environment). There are also many other professional courses you can take to improve/enhance your riding skills. Don’t let your skill level make you a statistic. Mistake #6: TAKING A PASSENGER -- Although there is no restriction on your license that says you can’t carry a passenger if your motorcycle is equipped, it is not recommended. Carrying a passenger is a big responsibility, and at this point you have enough to deal with keeping yourself safe. Your knowledge, experience, and skill level up to this point should tell you not to but if you need some reinforcement go back and re-read this article. It can be a life and death mistake for both! Mistake #7: NOT LOOKING WHERE YOU WANT TO GO -- Many people do this in general in their everyday lives, they end up thwarting their own goal-acheivements because they focus too hard on the task at hand. Looking far enough ahead where you want to go allows you to see any/all obstacles, then your brain and body automatically plan how to get there. The proof is in the exercise. Look ahead at the apex of a curve and you will track right there. Look at that tree on the side of the road and hello tree.

Second Time Around “I’m not afraid… I was born for this.” – Joan of Arc “You ready?” he asked as I mounted up and got settled in. “I think so. Is it ok if I hold on to you?” There was a moment of silence, and I smiled as his shoulders shook ever so slightly and he valiantly tried to suppress a chuckle. “OK…don’t even answer that,” I said, laughing and placing my hands gingerly on his hips from behind. “Baaaad, riding partner. Bad.” And with that, we were on our way. There’s an old saying that you never forget your first: First kiss, first love, first anything. I’d like to suggest that there are some things are even better the second time around. Now, don’t get me wrong; I will always hold a special place in my heart and in the shadows of my mind for the friend who coaxed me out of my shell and onto the back of his Harley. Baby steps, right? Baby steps, indeed. The fact of the matter is that this girl’s well on her way to running, and it’s all due to the kindness of strangers and the generous spirit of some very special people who remember what it was like to be at the beginning of their very own beginning. There’s so much to learn! I’m not naïve enough to think that it’s all going to come easy and that I’m not going to make mistakes. And you know what? I’m ok with that because I’ve been fortunate enough to tumble into friendship with someone who has taken me under his wing and is patiently guiding me through every new experience. Almost everyone I’ve talked to about wanting my own bike has shared stories with me about people who were instrumental in helping them realize the same dream. Call them teachers. Call them instructors. Call them mentors. A muse by any other name would be someone just as sweet. They’re people who have inspired others to chase their destiny. Or ride it into the sunset, to be more precise. Nikki has been interested in bikes since she was in her late teens. “Not so much wanting to own my own bike,” she says, “but just wanting to be around them.” An avid attendee of Friday the 13th celebrations in Port Dover for years, it was Nikki’s friends who finally convinced her that she needed to go and write the test and start the process. “They kept nudging me along,” she says with a smile. “And I have to admit that they were right. Now we all go riding together. It’s great!” Jeff has been riding since he was sixteen. “I got my bike license two years before

I even bothered to get a license to drive a car,” he shares. “There was a stretch of time when the kids came along and I didn’t get much, if any, riding time in.” Now that he’s semi-retired, he’s jumping on his ‘06 Suzuki Boulevard C50 and exploring the back roads near Nanticoke every chance he gets. I have to admit that I have been surprised at the responses and the feedback I’ve received since first writing about my experiences as a fledgling Biker-Mommain-Training. “A lot of what you said describes me as well. Mostly everyone didn’t believe I’d do it,” writes 53 year-old Patricia of Burford, Ontario. “My husband bought his first bike in November of ‘05. I stopped in at the dealership New Years Eve to pick up the Harley jacket I’d purchased him for Christmas that year. They asked me if I was looking for a bike. It just so happened they had a red 2000 Sportster that had just come in. I purchased it without even knowing how to ride it. I took the motorcycle course at Conestoga that April (2006) and never looked back. I absolutely love it. Don’t hold back. Go for it! You won’t regret it.” “When I was young and riding my pedal bike, I always dreamed of owning a Triumph or a Harley,” shares Jack from the Brantford area. “Then when I was 16, I bought a 650 BSA. I loved it, but when my mom found out, she made me take it back. When I got married at 19 and I tried to buy one again, but my young wife said ‘no way’ was she going to be married to a biker, so that was the end of that. I lost my wife almost 6 yrs ago and I still have the dream, but now I’m too old. That’s why I say ‘Go for it!’ Oh, I should add that I don’t have any regrets choosing my sweety over a bike.” From business associates of mine who wear a shirt and tie to work every day to the single mom of a girl who plays on my daughter’s soccer team, there are countless people who have been more than happy to share their stories. What’s your story? Would you consider sharing it with me? I’ll add it to the collection of tales I’ve christened ‘KIMbits’, and I’ll share some of them with you in future issues. Send your story to me c/o KAT@themotorcycletimes.ca and put ‘KIMbits’ in the subject line. From this girl’s training wheels perspective, every new experience is a story just waiting to be told. My new riding partner and mentor has introduced me to the sheer exhilaration of flying over back country roads in the moonlight and has helped me to overcome my fear of riding on a 400 series highway. I’ve also come to realize, in no uncertain terms, that coffee breaks and ‘biology breaks’ are to be had regularly and often, even on short trips. Oh, the stories I could tell! But that’s for another issue… KAT out.

RIDER PROFILE

Bed Bug Dog Lilu by Will powers Contributing Writer - TMT When she’s not riding, she works. When not working, she barks…. Robert Bureau is not just an avid rider; he is also the riding companion of a very special dog. Lilu, his Jack Russell Terrier is a permanent fixture on the back of his Anniversary Harley and has travelled coast to coast logging more miles than most riders. She is a faithful riding partner, travelling road dog, and a working canine. We’ve heard of Bomb dogs, Drug dogs, Arson dogs and Sight dogs, but now, Man’s Best Friend is the latest

weapon and a state of the art tool in the detection of bed bugs. From behind bars, Lilu, a prominent Jack Russell Terrier was facing death row. Despite the fact that her days were numbered, Lilu was full of love and energy and would prove to be an amazing dog. Picked up from a kill shelter in Kentucky, her trainer insisted that she would be a good candidate to train for a daunting task of hunting bedbugs. She was a quick learner at scent discrimination and before long she was working in New York City doing what she was taught to do and albeit doing it well. She had become a certified Bed bug dog. Before long Lilu was ready to ven-

ture over the border and start her new career in the Honeymoon Capital and the Niagara Peninsula in Ontario. Lilu and her handlers are trained and certified in the detection of bedbugs. To keep her in focus and on target she goes through comprehensive daily training sessions. Further, Lilu has quarterly testing and recertification every year. Lilu spends her free time at home with Robert and his family as a beloved and cherished pet. She loves her walks, running, playing with her many toys, chasing after squirrels, and laying in the sun or just sniffing around. But, when Lilu is at work, she is eager, efficient and cheerful. To her working

is like a game of hide and seek. The bedbugs hide, and she seeks them, using her powerful sense of smell. No matter how well the bedbugs might hide, the bed, the chairs, up in the ceiling or behind the baseboards; there is no escape from her. Bedbugs are masters at hiding and Lilu is a master at finding them. When she finds them, she sits, pointing with her nose, and even her paws; at the exact spot where they hide. With every find she gets very happy, and of course gets a well deserved reward. Check out Lilu at her website; www.NIK9. com for more history, details and videos of a truly talented canine. TMT
